TROPICAL ADVENTURES The Island is the perfect launch pad for reef based activities. Reef trips, diving charters, sea kayaking, sailing and fishing charters are all available. See the Island from the water – there are various boats that offer day trips and snorkelling as well as sunset sails. The Island also is well equipped for other water activities, including jet–skiing, with the majority happening at Horseshoe Bay. Swimming is a must on Magnetic Island with 23 beaches and calm tropical waters sheltered within the protected bays. Be mindful of stingers in the summer months from November to May. Swimming enclosures are located at Horseshoe and Picnic Bays. While Florence, Radical and Arthur Bays are somewhat off the beaten track, these secluded areas allow keen snorkellers an opportunity to walk off the beach and discover the fringing reefs. Visitors can also explore the snorkel trails at Nelly and Geoffrey Bays – keep a look out for the WWII aeroplane propeller in Geoffrey Bay and the giant clams along the way.
Looking for something a little different? Why not try your hand at coconut bowling – held every Thursday at Bungalow Bay Koala Village. Or if you would rather spectate, head to the toad races held every Wednesday night at Hotel Arcadia. Make sure you lay your bets, as all funds raised go towards Magnetic Island community groups. From scenic flights over the Island to challenging your mates to a game of golf, Magnetic Island is the ideal holiday spot to do as much (or as little) as you like.
ISLAND FISHING If you’re a keen fisherman or would just like to test your skills, there are plenty of great spots to cast a line, including the historic Picnic Bay jetty. Exotic tropical fish and marine life flourish in the surrounding coral reefs and tranquil waters, meaning tight lines are a common occurrence. Chartered fishing trips are available for those wanting to fish the hot spots. Remember to be up to date on the Marine Park Zoning Areas by visiting www.gbrmpa.gov.au
THE FAMOUS FORTS WALK Magnetic Island is home to Northern Australia’s largest colony of koalas. The Forts Walk is the best place on the Island to see koalas in the wild. Early in the morning or late in the afternoon will give you the best chance to see these furry creatures. The Walk is also home to the best preserved WWII fortification on the eastern seaboard. A reminder as to how close Australia came to being invaded in WWII is evidenced by the Forts gun emplacements which are still intact. Survey the sweeping 360 degree views of the coast and Coral Sea just as our protectors would have all those years ago. Another popular Island walk is the Four Bay Walk. Starting at Horseshoe Bay, this walk will take half a day and have you discover the secluded Balding, Radical, Florence and Arthur Bays.

DAY 3
Explore the Island’s most popular spots with a hire car or scooter, by bus or on foot! Visit the popular Nelly, Picnic, Alma and Horseshoe Bays. Buy some wallaby feed from the Arcadia Newsagency and feed the friendly rock wallabies at the old car ferry terminal at Geoffrey Bay.
Get friendly with the locals! Head up the popular Forts Walk for your chance to spot a koala – early morning or late afternoon is best. Purchase a swim card from a local retailer and get wet on the Snorkel Trails at Geoffrey and Nelly Bays. You will have the chance to discover giant clams, live coral and even a WWII plane propeller.
Uncover hidden beaches, bays and even shipwrecks when you jump aboard a charter. Exploring Magnetic Island by water is a great way to see the Island’s beauty. Head to Hotel Arcadia at 8:00pm every Wednesday night for Magnetic Island’s famous toad races.

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Accessible from Townsville, Magnetic Island, Hinchinbrook or Burdekin, the central section of the Great Barrier Reef offers some of the best diving sites on the east coast, from shallow lagoons, pinnacles rising from 30m to 5m from the surface, walls, swim throughs and wrecks. Located a little further off the coast, the central section has less impact from human activity. Day trips often visit Lodestone Reef, home to a variety of habitats from shallow areas with white sandy sea floor and large coral bommies (outcrops) to steep slopes with deep crevasses hosting a great diversity of fish life, including small damsels and butterfly fish to larger animals like the giant trevally and occasional reef shark. The multi day trips do most of the travelling at night to maximise visitors time on the reef, visiting a variety of locations like Wheeler Reef, with its white sandy cay and many pelagic species, Davies Reef with pinnacles rising from 30 metres and shallower bommies riddled with swim throughs and caves, Barra Bommie at Little Broadhurst Reef, where you can spot an octopus, and Australia’s best dive the Yongala Wreck, with the biggest diversity of large marine life around the world – Queensland gropers weighing over 300kgs, giant trevally, turtles, sea snakes, bull sharks and eagle rays just to mention a few.
18
SS YONGALA WRECK Experienced divers should visit the SS Yongala, a 28m deep shipwreck, that sank off the coast of Ayr (just south of Townsville in the Burdekin) during a tropical cyclone in 1911. Rated one of the world’s top 10 dive wrecks, the SS Yongala is home to a captivating array of hard and soft coral and spectacular marine life including sea turtles, sea anemone and thousands of inquisitive reef fish. Dive trips to the SS Yongala Wreck depart from Townsville, Magnetic Island and Alva Beach in the Burdekin. This historic wreck will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
HINCHINBROOK ISLAND Separated from the mainland only by the narrow Hinchinbrook Channel, the rugged peaks of Hinchinbrook Island National Park rise abruptly from the sea, signalling the island’s wild nature. Hinchinbrook is home to the world renowned wilderness walk, the Thorsborne Trail. Covering 32km, the Trail follows some of Australia’s most scenic island coastline. Discover sweeping bays, sandy beaches, extensive mangroves, fragile heaths, dense forests and lofty summits – perfect for the traveller with a thirst for adventure. With only 40 permits given at any one time, this exclusive island will have you feeling like you’re in a paradise of your own.
ORPHEUS ISLAND Charter a boat, take your own or jump in a helicopter to unwind on Orpheus Island National Park in the Palm group of Islands. Book into the luxury resort or set up a self–sufficient camp in one of the Island’s secluded camping areas. Snorkel off the beach in blue–green reef waters to discover a marine wonderland or look and listen for birds in the forest and on the shore. This is a true tropical island experience!
PALM ISLAND Located 65km north–west of Townsville, Palm Island is the traditional country of the Manbarra people and more recently, home of the Bwgcolman tribal people. Palm Island’s assets are its unique Indigenous heritage and rich cultural history. The Island lies in the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the pristine waters of the area make it a great fishing spot.
SAILING AND FISHING ON THE GREAT BARRIER REEF Townsville North Queensland’s tropical weather provides the perfect environment for sailing and boating. Experienced sailors can charter a vessel to sail through the many secluded areas. If you prefer group interaction, there are plenty of day trips departing Townsville and Magnetic Island. The Great Barrier Reef is a fisherman’s paradise with some of the most succulent catches being spanish mackerel, coral trout, red emperor and sweet lip. More than one–third of the Great Barrier Reef is declared a no–take zone, so if you are looking to catch and cook, check the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s Zoning Regulations before you leave the shore.

For a relaxing day out, Townsville’s northern beaches – just 60km north of the city – are the ideal getaway. Bushland, Saunders, Toolakea, Toomulla and Balgal Beaches are perfect for fishing, swimming, picnicking and bird watching.
CRYSTAL CREEK For a pleasant change of climate and scenery, travel north along the Bruce Highway and turn left to Crystal Creek and Paluma. These swimming holes are a favourite of Townsville locals and offer the perfect place to cool off on a warm day. Big Crystal Creek, at the base of the Paluma Range, features a large swimming hole, natural rock slides and a picnicking area, perfect for families and larger groups. Little Crystal Creek, located 11km up the winding road to Paluma Village, is well known for its historic stone arch bridge built in the 1930s. Cascading waterfalls feed into one of the best freshwater swimming holes in the north.
PALUMA Embrace the natural beauty of the Paluma Range National Park – the southern gateway to the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Escape the coastal lowland heat and relax in the cool mountain air of the Paluma Range. Experience the thrill of being one of the ‘lucky ones’ that spots the rare golden bowerbird, and take a step back in history at Paluma, the village in the rainforest. Enjoy a rainforest walk and smile for the cameras at McClellands Lookout as you enjoy stunning views along the coast. Travelling on from Paluma, the diversity of flora and fauna changes dramatically as you enter the dry open woodlands. The small township of Hidden Valley is home to Hidden Valley Cabins, an eco retreat offering daily platypus tours and home cooked meals.

Charters Towers and Ravenswood Take a step back in time and explore the unique history and heritage of the gold rush towns of Charters Towers and Ravenswood.
Your Charters Towers and Ravenswood Itinerary DAY 1
Explore historic Charters Towers in your own time. Pick up the self–drive audio tour CD and map from the Visitor Information Centre and find yourself in the past. Uncover heritage listed buildings like the Stock Exchange Arcade, the World Theatre and the Post Office Tower.
DAY 2 Meet ‘JR’, the 2013 Guinness World Record holder for the bull with the longest horns and star of Texas Longhorn Wagon Tours and Safaris.
CHARTERS TOWERS Driving through the streets of Charters Towers is like viewing a living montage of Australian history and heritage. Gold was first discovered in Charters Towers in 1871 by Aboriginal horse boy, Jupiter Mosman. Thousands flocked from across the globe in a mad rush to the town, once the second largest in Queensland. The town was believed to have everything a civilised person could want and soon became known as The World.
26
DAY 3 Stay the night in a haunted hotel room in Ravenswood – if you dare. Explore the mullock heaps and abandoned mining equipment and visit the lookout at the open–cut gold mine currently in full operation.

Take a wagon ride around the ranch, meet the animals and enjoy billy tea and damper with owners Michael and Lynda.
The magnificent heritage buildings are testament to the prosperity of the era. The heritage listed Stock Exchange Arcade, the World Theatre, City Hall and the Post Office Tower will have you reaching for your camera. Don’t forget to visit the iconic drive–in cinema for flicks under the stars, the Towers Hill lookout, the Venus Gold Battery – the largest surviving battery relic in Australia – or learn to pan for gold at The Miner’s Cottage. Today, Charters Towers is known as a rural hub for
graziers and the mining industry and hosts the Southern Hemisphere’s largest cricket carnival, the Gold Field Ashes, each January.
RAVENSWOOD A short 40km detour off the Flinders Highway, en–route to Charters Towers, you will find historic Ravenswood. Formerly settled for gold mining, this unique heritage listed town looks like a movie set with its beautiful old buildings, mullock heaps and chimney stacks. The Court
House Museum, the restored School House, Thorp’s Building and Butler’s Cottage are just some of the treasures visitors can discover. Take a self–guided walk to visit them all or climb to the top of the local lookout to view the amazing open–cut mine – a great place to take a ‘selfie’. Travel just 5km out of town to White Blow Conservation Park to admire the unusual geological formation of a unique white quartz outcrop dating back 300 million years.

Burdekin Just one hour’s drive south of Townsville is the Burdekin Shire – the sugar capital of Australia, fishing mecca, bird watching paradise and traditional homeland of the Gudjuda Aboriginal people. The district is made up of the neighbouring towns of Ayr and Home Hill and includes over a dozen other smaller centres. It is as famous for its rich, flat farmlands as it is for its amazing waterways and scenic beauty. The Burdekin maintains a healthy reputation for its friendly residents, great specialty stores and laid back lifestyle.

DAY 2
Stop in for a coffee and enjoy a taste of Italy in one of the many delis. Stroll down Queen Street in Ayr and see the fashions available from the independent boutiques. Head to Alva Beach with a picnic rug and enjoy the sea breeze as you relax under the trees.
As you head south out of Ayr, stop at Plantation Park to look at the Gudjuda Cultural Centre and Gubulla Munda , the 63m Carpet Snake sculpture (the totem of the Juru people). Take a walk across the Burdekin Bridge and learn about the history of the region at the Lions Diorama at the southern end. ICONS
As producer of the biggest and sweetest sugar cane in the country, the Burdekin is also one of the only cane growing regions left in Australia where cane is burnt before harvesting. These magnificent cane fires light up the skies every evening between June and December and have become a tourist attraction in their own right.
Fantastic fishing is on offer in the estuaries and waterways of the fertile Burdekin Delta. Fishing tours are available to catch barramundi, mud crabs, prawns, mangrove jack and more!
The Burdekin River Bridge, which links Ayr and Home Hill, is the district’s best known landmark. Known as the Silver Link, the 1,103m crossing is the only bridge in Australia built without a solid footing and is longer than the Sydney Harbour Bridge. An Engineering Heritage National Landmark award was unveiled on the southern side of the Bridge in 2010.
WETLANDS The Burdekin’s magnificent wetlands are home to an amazing array of bird life, some of which are unique to the area. Bird watchers shouldn’t miss Plantation Park or Horseshoe Lagoon.
The SS Yongala shipwreck lies just off the coast of Ayr and is ranked one of the top 10 dive sites in the world. This is a must do for experienced divers. Yongala Dive, based at Alva Beach, is the fastest way to get to the site and discover the magnificent marine life that calls the wreck home.

Heritage Walking Trails TOWNSVILLE
Townsville’s Heritage Walking Trails are a must do for visitors wanting to know the full story of the city and its past. The walks are filled with interpretive information and hundreds of photo opportunities to help you discover the Townsville of old. Guide yourself around the city by collecting a brochure at the Townsville Bulletin Square Visitor Information Centre, The Knowledge Centre – City Library or the front counter at the Townsville City Council.
TRAIL 1 – CIVIC PRIDE Retrace the growth of Townsville’s CBD, particularly the westward movement, with the expansion of insurance, commercial and banking institutions. Marvel at the grand qualities of the buildings and how they contributed to Townsville’s emergence as the north’s administrative centre.
TRAIL 2 – EARLY TOWNSVILLE Trace the 1880s transformation of the original ‘heart of the city’ and port related Flinders Street East. The evolution of single storey timber structures to one and two storey masonry buildings reflects the development of the city’s character in the fabric and function of these buildings.
TRAIL 3 – SOUTH TOWNSVILLE AND PORT South Townsville was a hub for industry with many residents in the suburb employed at the Port and in associated industries. Reminisce about the early social make–up of the suburb through the architecture and get a snapshot of the daily social interaction between wharfies, seamen, meatworkers and railway workers at one of the many historic pubs.
CHARTERS TOWERS
There are few historic city hearts as beautifully preserved as Charters Towers’ “One Square Mile”. Collect your self–guided walk brochure at the Visitor Information Centre and enjoy a leisurely stroll around the streets of the central business district taking in the elegance and grandeur of the magnificent civic buildings, historic hotels and quaint cottages from the gold rush era; take a guided one–hour easy walking tour for more insight into the history of the buildings and the town itself and discover why they called Charters Towers “The World”.

From the fertile TYTO Wetlands in Hinchinbrook to the open woodland of the Townsville Town Common, this tropical region is alive with the flutter, chirp and colour of some of the world’s most impressive birdlife. In fact, this region is so filled with feathered creatures that you will even meet city dwellers like the red–tailed black cockatoos along Townsville’s Strand. Rainbow lorikeets are frequently seen in suburban streets and the always busy Australian brush turkeys in the city’s various parks and gardens.
