2015 RACE GUIDE
HEY MOVERS, SHAKERS AND RECORD BREAKERS! Welcome to the 2015 McDonalds Townsville Running Festival. If you are local then I sincerely hope you enjoy the show, get involved, spread tropical hospitality and bring the atmosphere to our locally owned event. If you are visiting the region and have chosen to lace up and do battle with one of our measured courses, you’ll be considered local. In the long run. Don’t be surprised if you outdo your expectations...we celebrate a favorable climate for this time of year and this type of running. The red carpet (is it a carpet or a runner?) has been rolled out for all of you in the form of our coastline and the iconic blue line, I’ll have my people do their best to keep the hordes of screaming fans and flashing paparazzi to the sidelines of the course while you go toe-to-toe with greatness. So I put it to all of you: achieve your goals, support people having a crack at theirs, high five a stranger and tell the world it all went down at the McDonalds Townsville Running Festival.

TOWNSVILLE HAS A LONG AND PROUD HISTORY OF HOSTING A VIBRANT RUNNING FESTIVAL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TROPICAL WINTER. From a humble starting field of 10 runners on 23 September 1973, the Tony Ireland Townsville Marathon is now the second oldest M arathon in Australia. This event is owned and run by Townsville Road Runners Inc – an event by runners for runners. Initiated in 1999, the McDonald’s® Townsville Running Festival was Australia’s first event that brought together courses of various lengths, and runners of diverse ability in the one program to create an official ‘festival’. With just 315 competitors lining the streets in that first year, word of Townsville’s friendly local runners and stunning course has spread and we now have almost 3,000 runners join us on the first Sunday of August each year. With the starting pistol firing before the sun rises, runners in the Tony Ireland Townsville Marathon are privy to some of the most spectacularly lit views of Townsville’s historic city centre and the seemingly endless stretch of sand and glistening Coral Sea that run side by side with the course. As the sun comes up and the morning’s first rays of light start to bounce off the rocky face of iconic Castle Hill the pitter-patter of marathoners’ feet is joined by a stampede of runners in shorter events including the Sports Clinic NQ Half Marathon, The Athlete’s Foot 10K Classic, The Get Branded Adult 5K Fun Run and Walk, The Queensland Country Health Fund 5K Corporate Challenge, The McDonald’s Junior 5K Fun Run and Walk, and the Townsville Airport 2.5K Hero Run.
The McDonald’s® Townsville Running Festival provides a direct economic boost to the community, while promoting awareness and education on fitness, nutrition and healthy lifestyles – all of which contribute to fostering a strong and vibrant community. Raising money for charity and community groups in the region has always been an immense goal of the Festival. There is a large focus on Ronald McDonald House Charities and its work for families who need it most. Illness, uncertainty and fear can have a devastating effect on families. The Festival is also closely aligned with Mates4Mates and Soldier On, two terrific organisations working hard to help our returning service men and women who have experienced physical or psychological illness or injury in the line of duty. Look out for some of our local soldiers on the course as they complete the Soldier On Memorial Marathon wearing 10kg of combat armour. In further spirit of giving back, The Townsville Airport 2.5K Hero Run allows competitors, individuals or a team, to choose their own community group or local cause. Runners can get active and make an impact by increasing awareness of important issues they’re personally passionate about.

RUNNERS GOING THE DISTANCE This year’s runners have stepped up their game with approximately 30% of early registrants in the McDonald’s Townsville Running Festival challenging themselves to attempt a longer distance in 2015. Registrations for The Athlete’s Foot 10K Classic experienced the biggest boost, prompting organisers to hold a 10-week 10K Bootcamp for runners looking to graduate from the 5K events or improve their time over the course. Townsville’s Matthew French is among those new to 10km events, having run the Townsville Bulletin 5K Adult Fun Run at last year’s Townsville Running Festival.

“I recently completed my first competitive 10K in Melbourne with the goal to finish in under an hour and did that in 52 minutes, so I hope to beat the 50 minute mark in Townsville on August 2.” Townsville trainer Sam Stedman from Outer Limits Adventure Fitness conducted the 10-week course, helping to prepare participants through cardio, strength and conditioning, and lifestyle coaching, and said it was encouraging to see so many people looking to increase their running abilities. “I think there’s been a big change in the fitness trend. Fitness used to be heavily about being in the gym, but now, through events like the Running Festival, multisports events, and adventure fitness, people are starting to see that they can get outside and train, not because they have to, but because they genuinely enjoy it.”

RACE NUMBERS It is compulsory to wear your race number in your race. A timing device is attached to your number. This device can be checked on a timing mat located at registration on Saturday. Attach your race number with pins provided – do not fold, bend or wrinkle your race number. For identification purposes wear your race number facing forward. We urge you to complete the medical details on the rear of your race number. Race numbers are colour coded per race. You are entitled to keep your race number and timing tag as a souvenir. Many runners are now competing in events in honour or in memory of someone. All race numbers this year have a space to write a name if you wish. Remember no race number means no race time. BAG DROP A Bag Drop tent will be located near the race assembly area, on the grass in Jezzine Barracks. A tear-off bag identification tag is attached to your race number. RACE BRIEFING Race briefings will be conducted on registration day. Join our Race Director at 12pm or 2pm on Saturday, 1 August in front of The Athlete’s Foot marquee to get the low down on your race. Late registrants (those who register on Saturday, 1 August) are not guaranteed a singlet.
HERO RUN GOOD FOR MORE THAN YOUR FITNESS In just its second year, the Townsville Airport 2.5K Hero Run is fast becoming one of the most popular events at the McDonald’s® Townsville Running Festival – and that may be due to more than just the fun costumes! The 2.5K Hero Run offers entrants the opportunity to nominate and fundraise for a charity, school, or community group of their choice, and the response to this opportunity has been enormous, with many local organisations seeing the benefits. Brad Hastewell, Relationship and Development Manager of Ronald McDonald House North Queensland, says the Hero Run has given the House a completely new way to become involved in the Festival. “In the past, we’ve been involved with the Chosen Ones, who are six people nominated to fundraise and run for Ronald McDonald House in the Townsville Running Festival. But the Hero Run allows so much more community involvement – as well as raising money, it’s a way to get the community together, with a strong focus on families and children, all in line with our charity,” Mr Hastewell said. “There is constant ongoing maintenance at the house which funds raised could easily be put towards, but the hope is that it will all be put towards the new family room at the hospital, which is something we can give back to Townsville – it’s basically a mini Ronald McDonald House in the hospital, and has been in the works for years.” As well as a number of charities, local community groups and schools are also part of the fundraising. St Anthony’s Kindergarten will be one of the schools to benefit, with Kindergarten Educator Kylie Pattersen saying that as well as the opportunity to fundraise, the Hero Run had also provided the students with chances to dress up and have fun with their families and friends. “The funds raised by the children will be put to good use: to purchase new dress ups for dramatic play and our end-of-year concert, resources for our brand new Kindergarten animals such as food and bedding, as well as new apps for the shared iPads,” Ms Pattersen said. SOLDIERS’ MARATHON EFFORT TO RAISE PTSD AWARENESS Two Townsville soldiers and one civilian will face off in a test of strength and stamina as they run the Tony Ireland Townsville Marathon to raise funds and awareness for Soldier On at this year’s McDonald’s Townsville Running Festival. Private Alex Rutledge of 1 RAR and Corporal Richard Johnston of 2 RAR and Mr Leigh Fordham will line up before dawn with approximately 100 other marathon runners to complete Townsville’s scenic 42.2km course. The difference? The three men will be running in 10kg of body armour in hopes to raise $30,000 to help ease the transition between active duty and returning to Australia. The armoured run began at the Townsville Marathon in 2014 when local soldier Corporal Brian Heilbronn set himself the challenge in memory of Captain Paul McKay, an Afghanistan veteran whose body was found in the mountains of New York State after being diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from his time serving Australia. Unfortunately Cpl Heilbronn was unable to complete the Townsville Marathon due to a motorcycle accident a few weeks before the event and mate Cpl Cam Hardie took on the challenge in his place. According to Cpl Heilbronn, the armoured run is taking shape as tradition within Townsville’s RAR ranks, with Soldier On introducing a perpetual trophy this year to fuel some friendly competition. “Solider On has been incredibly supportive of our initiative and has been kind enough to sponsor a perpetual trophy that will hopefully be around for many years to come as Townsville’s serving men and women continue this challenge in a bid to open up discussion about PTSD and how it affects our soldiers, their families and the wider community,” Cpl Heilbronn said. Cpl Johnston said he had seen a number of friends diagnosed with PTSD as they adjusted to life at home after overseas duty. “I don’t think anyone who joins the Army does so with a victim mentality so it can be hard to put your hand up and say ‘I’m not feeling quite right and maybe I need some help’. Soldier On does a lot to relieve the stigma associated with PTSD, so I’m proud to train for the Townsville Marathon and make the cause more personal than just throwing money at it,” said Cpl Johnston. “I’ve done a few marathons before and know I can do the distance, but the added weight will make for a bit of a challenge.” Pte Rutledge and Mr Fordham have not run a marathon before but are determined to complete the challenge as a way of giving back. “I’ll start with some easier runs, about 20km to begin with, and just slowly move up in 5km increments until I can do the full distance,” said Pte Rutledge. “All of my mates are backing me for this challenge and if we can get just a few more people talking openly and honestly about PTSD then I’ll feel as though I’ve done my part to give back.”

TOWNSVILLE TURNS ON AN ARTY RUN Running is already an art within itself – but North Queensland will put on twice the show as the annual McDonald’s® Townsville Running Festival coincides with the biennial Strand Ephemera this August. The McDonald’s® Townsville Running Festival has long been loved for its tropical winter climate and stunning course. With the Marathon starting just before dawn, the track is a veritable masterpiece – a sky tinted with everchanging hues, the rising sun causing sprinkles of glitter to dance atop the Coral Sea, and a patchwork of palms and figs casting alternating light and shade over the fast and flat canvas. With seven events – ranging from a 2.5km Hero Run to a certified marathon – there’s a course to cater to all running palates. And this year, that includes those looking to soak up some culture with their cardio. For the first time in the McDonald’s Townsville Running Festival’s 17-year history, the event will coincide with the 13-year-old Strand Ephemera, a seaside sculptural Festival that transforms Townsville’s already breathtaking 2.2km Strand beach into a temporary outdoor art gallery dotted with quality artwork that attracts up to 100,000 visitors over 10 days. Shane Fitzgerald, Manager Gallery Services, said that the event showcases the diversity of Australian artwork, and puts it on display in the most breathtaking setting. “People can expect a wide array of works – from large sculptural pieces on the water, on the sand and the
grassy foreshore, to delicate pieces waiting to be discovered, digital projections, sand sculptures and 3D chalk drawings,” Mr Nash said. “Strand Ephemera started in 2001 in response to a public art funding program from the Queensland Government, andsought to provide a platform to develop artists’ skills in a public space so that the artists may become more competitive when it came to finding commercial outlets for their work. It has grown to become of national significance due to the calibre of works involved, the high level of community engagement, and the pristine location and perfect weather each Ephemera.” McDonald’s Townsville Running Festival Committee President, Tony Gordon, said the marriage of the Running Festival and the Strand Ephemera would only boost the distinction of both events. “I’ve heard of a lot of art enthusiasts travelling to Townsville for the Ephemera, who have realised the Running Festival is on the same weekend and jumped at the opportunity to get involved in even more while they’re in our region,” Mr Gordon said. “The great thing about both events is that they cater to everyone – there’s interactive art installations and thought-provoking sculptures in the Ephemera, and the Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, and 2.5K events on offer in Running Festival. “Together, the events are a fun and easy way to combine physical activity with a healthy dose of artistic appreciation.”

RUNNING TOWNSVILLE FOR 40 YEARS A message from the Townsville Road Runners Come along to Townsville Road Runners. We’re a friendly, social group that loves to run along paths, roads, trails and cross country. Our runs are sometimes long, sometimes short, sometimes up hills, sometimes flat – we like variety, and you don’t need to be an elite runner to join in the fun. We offer opportunities for runners of all abilities, including beginners’ classes for runners just starting out, junior races for the younger ones and regular fun runs. Our Saturday runs are open to all – whether you’d like to run against the clock, run against yourself or have a leisurely jog and a post-run cuppa with friends. Becoming a Townsville Road Runners member is as easy as showing up to one of our Saturday club runs and speaking to one of the volunteers on the registration desk. We hope to see you soon.
