THE (ALMOST) IMPOSSIBLE DREAM Johnnie Stevens -- lifelong Telluride resident, TREC broker, former Telluride Ski Resort CEO, and Colorado Ski Hall of Famer -- tells of the vision of early ski area proponents, and the efforts by early owners to make the dream of the resort a reality
The first semi-formal attempts to establish Telluride as a ski resort, or at least to replace some of the early rope tows with a chair lift or two, began in the early 1960s. Led by locals Bill “Billy” Mahoney and Bucky Schuler, an invite was made to one Pete Seibert, who would ultimately go on to co-found the Vail ski resort, to visit Telluride and to give an assessment of the possibility of its becoming a ski resort. Pete was paid the sum of $20 for his visit. His assessment was positive, though he clearly explained that while there was obvious potential, there would be many obstacles in the way of a launch, not to mention the likelihood of never getting the project off the ground. There was also some confirmation of what was already suspected -- that the existing mountain terrain and its location directly adjacent to the Town of Telluride were particularly ideal. Billy and fellow town councilman Donnie O’Rourke did some subsequent due diligence with the Denver-based Sterns-Rogers engineering group, and were given a preliminary bid for a chairlift which would ascend from the Town up to Camel’s Garden. It was estimated the lift would cost approximately $75,000, plus the necessary trail clearing. The proposal was submitted to the town council and after some discussion it was declined as too risky and not worth the expense to be incurred by the community. 2
Also around that time, throughout the Colorado Rockies there were several areas which had already committed to the new ski and resort economy, which revitalized old communities and started new ones. The identified attributes of Telluride were the town itself, the terrain, the elevation, the amount of snowfall, and the general beauty of the area. However, Telluride was also subject to significant challenges, and one of the most problematic was that it was so isolated and not close to any large population centers, which is what gave many of the newly created resorts advantages, translating to accelerated successes. The isolation of Telluride was commonly acknowledged by the general public and ski area experts alike as a real problem. At one time in the early stages of our development I was told by a seasoned ski area expert, “You will never make it as a destination resort for, if you have noticed, your location is un-strategically located somewhere between Utah and Waco, Texas, which is problematic. You will never make it.” There is a common theme when success is realized in spite of what appears to be less than ideal scenarios or situational conditions. It is also recognized that success does not come easily, but what really does? For decades historians have studied and opined on history, events and circumstances as relates to their chosen situations, but it most likely can be concluded that whatever the situation, results are largely determined by three things: The Right Place, The Right www.telluriderealestatecorp.com
Time, and perhaps most importantly, The Right People. Telluride had these in spades. Along with these fledgling local efforts to bring more skiing to Telluride there was also some limited knowledge beyond the community about the potential of a ski area. As early as the 1940s, the United States Forest Service had designated the area around Trout Lake as a Winter Sports Area, with skiing being a component of the activities. World War II nixed that plan, and it was never heard of again. Then, in 1968, a part-time resident of Aspen, Colorado, Joe Zoline, was informed of the concept of a potential ski area near Telluride. Having seen first-hand the success that Aspen had experienced, Joe visited Telluride to confirm what he had heard about this out-of-the-way place. On his first visit he had breakfast at the only restaurant in town--the Roma Bar and Grill--and met the owner, Kate Mulvey. It was Kate who arranged for Joe to meet with the local Rotary Club and discuss his thoughts about building a ski resort in Telluride. He did not get positive responses from some quarters (due to a previous ski area consultant who skipped town with the $10,000 they’d raised to pay him!), but was not totally discouraged either. When he asked Kate about who might be able aid him in further due diligence pertaining to a ski area, she recommended that he talk to the aforementioned miner and avid skier, Billy Mahoney.
parcels on Turkey Creek Mesa. Securing these specific parcels was critical for the eventual ski area permit application to the United States Forest Service, for without them the permit would have been rejected, and the resort as we now know it might never have been. The Adams Ranch Parcel: Gene Adams was the son of Alva R. Adams who had originally purchased the property for the Telluride Dairy, which delivered milk to the surrounding towns and mines. The Dairy also raised cattle and sheep. Alva’s parents originally had the freight station at the top of Last Dollar Road and ran a freight team of oxen and horses for hauling supplies throughout the area. Alva actually hauled the last load of ore from the Tomboy Mine. He ultimately moved to Delta, after which he sold his ranch to Gene in the mid-1940s. During and after the war, Gene
In the early 1960s that parcel was purchased by Dr. Dick O’Conner, the local doctor, for the sum of $500, and was then ultimately purchased by Mr. Zoline.
As Billy continued to work for the mine, he devoted weekends and vacations to help Joe identify critical pieces of land which would need to be secured to build the ski resort. Billy’s son Bill “Junior” Mahoney describes the day Billy fully committed to Joe’s vision of the ski area: “I remember the day my dad came home and said, ‘I’m thinking of quitting the mine and going to work for Joe Zoline to build a ski area.’ And I can tell you, the silence at our dinner table was incredible. Of course we were all thinking, well, how is that going to work? We know this mine is going to be here forever. You know, which obviously didn’t happen. And that was quite the day in our lives when our dad said he was going to work for the ski area.” There had been the belief by many of the locals (miners) that a ski area would be good for the community, for no one knew how long the mine would operate, so they were supportive of a plan to at least augment the mining economy. Critical pieces of land were identified adjacent to and within the Town of Telluride, along with the Adams Ranch and Gorrono @TRECTelluride
continued to purchase more land, expanded his cattle and sheep operations and moved into his uncle’s house (Jake Lawson). Gene and his wife Jean Adams consolidated many lands and, to aid with all the work, was ably supported by his daughters Terry and Denise, 3
and his nephew Butch Bowers. I was most fortunate to have been a classmate of Butch’s and spent many hours working on the ranch and staying in the bunk house located on the property.
The Gorrono Parcel included several hundred acres owned by a family who raised sheep and was located directly above and adjacent to the current Mountain Village. It would prove critical for lift and trail construction. The Dakota Placer was a parcel of approximately 18 acres directly adjacent to the Town of Telluride and parallel to the San Miguel River, which provided access to and from the ski mountain. In the early 1960s that parcel was purchased by Dr. Dick O’Conner, the local doctor, for the sum of $500, and was then ultimately purchased by Mr. Zoline. The Backman Property located west of the current Town of Telluride included what is known as Backman Village and the Pearl Property. Albert Backman worked in the mill, and unbelievably, passed away the day after closing the sale of his property. The Telluride Transfer was owned by the Schuler family and was purchased by Zoline for the purpose of owning property directly within the Town. Along with it was one of the earliest PUC #60 transportation licenses issued in the state of Colorado which would ultimately be needed for transporting guests. At such time as most of the critical lands were being secured, a study permit was granted by the United States Forest Service to construct some test ski runs and do very limited snow-cat tours in the winters of 1969-70 and 1970-71. The study period showed potential, so a Special Use Permit was granted in 1972 and actual construction for the new Telluride Ski Resort started immediately. Along with trail construction, a day lodge and five chairlifts were installed in the summer of 1972, and the operation opened for business in December of that same year. As Billy Mahoney puts it, “That was probably the biggest thrill of my life, when we didn’t have to walk up the hill!”
Now, keep in mind that, despite our optimism, we were the single worst ski resort in North America.
4
Over the years Gene and Jean were able to keep the full assemblage of land together which was a credit to them, for it ultimately served as a relatively clean palette for the planning process for the ski resort and the bulk of what is now the Mountain Village. It should be noted that when the Adamses were approached to possibly sell, Zoline was notified that they had already optioned the land to developers who intended to subdivide the land into many “ranchette” parcels with no anticipation of any skiing. Joe was able to buy the option from the developers, and so did not do an outright purchase of the Adams parcel but rather purchased it over time, parcel by parcel.
Now, keep in mind that, despite our optimism, we were the single worst ski resort in North America. No transportation system, no bed base, no population base close by. But by God, we had a dream. When we launched our first lifts, there were less than 30 rooms in the whole Telluride area. Who in the heck would launch a resort with 30 pillows? Because of the need for capital, the ski company turned its hand to real estate sales. They secured conventional financing and at the same time got entitlements on some of the newly acquired raw land www.telluriderealestatecorp.com
to begin construction on the Telluride Lodge in the Town of Telluride. A very limited sales force began to generate some cash through the sales of new (and some old) inventory, but it was generally limited. It was difficult to sell the dream when most of it was just words and a few maps, and there was a limited market of individuals interested in investing in the Telluride endeavor, but sales did occur and the resort was able to stay afloat. To secure more necessary financing Joe was fortunate to work an arrangement with a banking entity out of Switzerland named Simonius-Visher. Through its commitments it became the majority owner of the company, by a small margin, and in large part funded much of the actual construction on the mountain in the early years. Joe’s vision for the ski area was critical but Simonius-Visher was a foreign lifesaver which made much of it happen. The new economy immediately became a blend of a mining community and a population of new, young folks who decided to give Telluride a try. There was excitement in the air and, along with a cadre of individuals working on the ski mountain, there was an influx of people wanting to be part of this new endeavor, whether it was starting new businesses or construction, or adding to the general labor force. There were of course cultural clashes of varying degrees but the new energy had a passion that was relentless. The area was getting limited press but much of it negative, in part because we were being compared to more mature resorts, and in part because there certainly was credence to some of the criticisms. There was one day in particular in the first year that we sold only seven ski tickets and there were many days that we did not exceed one hundred ticket sales. Even as we struggled in those early years, we still hung in there and by 1975 the ski resort was able to construct the Coonskin Lift, which gave direct ski lift access from the town to the ski mountain. Adding the new Coonskin Lift provided a marketing opportunity and resulted in a nice bump in skier days. By the end of ski season 1975-76, there was great anticipation that the winter of 1976-77 would be significantly positive for the overall economic conditions, because another year meant that word of the additional amenity of the Coonskin Lift could spread further. However, this was not to be, for that year Colorado experienced a very low snow winter. @TRECTelluride
5
Telluride was only able to be open approximately 30 days for the entire season. That was a major financial setback for the entire community and subjected the ski company to additional financial constraints, which raised some questions of how the dream was to stay alive. However, in other parts of the state ski areas were growing and prospering, and there occurred a series of events which would have an effect on the future of the Telluride Ski Resort. There was a ballot initiative by the State of Colorado to host the 1972 Olympics. If the ballot issue before the entire state passed, most of the venues were to be held in the Vail area, where the operators of Vail Resorts had intended to develop Beaver Creek as a result of a positive ballot result. At that time, a large ranch below Beaver Creek was purchased by two gentlemen, Ron Allred and Jim Wells, for the purpose of land development concurrent with ski resort development. Unfortunately, the ballot issue was defeated which was a blow to many in the state. Despite this rejection, a decision was
subsequently made by the two to move forward, secure financing and pursue the land development in spite of the Olympic rejection. Necessary entitlements were secured and, though there were some financing setbacks, sales were successful and the entire Avon project proceeded. Along with development in and around Vail, Ron solicited the advice of Pete Seibert as to any recommendations he may have pertaining to acquiring a ski resort in Colorado with one of the prerequisites of being a “beautiful place.” Pete 6
immediately recommended looking at Telluride. Both Ron and Jim were raised in Grand Junction but neither had ever been to Telluride. He followed up on Pete’s advice and made an exploratory trip in the summer of 1977. Being very impressed with what he saw, he contacted Joe Zoline, who was indeed amenable to the possibility of selling the ski area. After lengthy negotiations involving Zoline and Simonius-Visher, a deal was ultimately finalized and Allred/Wells took control of the Telluride Ski Resort in the fall of 1978. Junior Mahoney says of this time in the resort’s history, “Johnnie was right – we were the worst ski resort in North America, because we didn’t know what we were doing and we were out here in the middle of nowhere. But one thing everybody had here was heart, they wanted this so bad. So we all worked hard and so did Joe, until he sold, and then we worked even harder.” Planning for the expansion of the ski mountain progressed, so land development became critical not only to significantly improve the ski mountain, but to help fund the entire plan. It also should be noted that the entire resort economy of the region was still in its infancy and anemic, to say the least. Much of the work force and tax base was directly attributable to the mining economy, which had lasted for well over one hundred years. Ron observed of the town that year, “The year we came here was the year the mine shut down. This was a town was dying. The only economy was the mine, and then one day that tap turned off. It was pretty dramatic.” Indeed, in 1978, the Idarado Mining Company had made the decision to terminate operations with no anticipation of ever reopening. Now it would have to be the new ski economy carrying Telluride into the future. The efforts to acquire the necessary approvals to expand the ski mountain and its real estate entitlements involved unending meetings and debates with many agencies at the local, state and federal levels. The multi-year approval process was an exercise in planning, patience and compromise but ultimately ended in a positive result. Not only that, there were those who insisted they were only interested in ski area expansion and discounted the reality that to finance any expansion would by nature require land development. Fortunately Telluride had grown so slowly that most of the large land holdings in and around Telluride had undergone very limited to no development by the mid-1970s. Recognizing there was an opportunity to plan for what appeared to be inevitable growth, a diverse group of www.telluriderealestatecorp.com
community leaders and representatives of the major land owners, led by Ron Allred and the ski company, embarked on an extensive regional planning exercise which would ultimately limit density and assign development pods within respective land holdings. That planning process is recognized as one of the most important aspects of limiting sprawl and density for the Telluride region, unlike what has happened to many resorts within the country.
These, along with many other examples, showed the vision of the new owners and the ski company -- that Telluride needed to be much more than just a ski area.
This transition of ownership was by no means all smooth sailing. No sooner had control of the ski area changed hands, it was discovered that the new owners were required to settle previous lawsuits pertaining to the Telluride Lodge and to do an extensive update of the mountain Master Plan before any necessary improvements could occur. Additionally, the overall financial condition of the town and region was less than ideal in large part because of the previous nosnow year, and it was immediately brought to their attention that the local bank was in non-compliance with federal regulators. They needed a loan to meet certain requirements in order to continue banking operations. The ski company made a loan to the bank of $500,000 and they were able to proceed as a compliant bank, thanks to the ski company. There was also a community situation in which the upstart Telluride Film Festival had decided to relocate to Santa Fe, for it could not succeed in Telluride without some financial assistance. Along with other community financial benefactors, the ski company entered into a long-term commitment to aid in keeping the festival in Telluride. These, along with many other examples,
showed the vision of the new owners and the ski company -- that Telluride needed to be much more than just a ski area. It needed to be a vibrant yearround resort in order to realize its full potential. The decade between 1968 and 1978 constituted the formative years of a dual economy, which transitioned into a fledgling ski resort. There were many who gave their all to succeed through those initial years, and many came and many went largely for financial reasons. It was just too difficult to make a living and raise a family while at the same time dealing with the inconsistencies of gainful employment at an emerging resort. Allred’s vision to help build a year-round worldclass resort still seemed like a pipe dream to many folks, but was still embraced as a worthy goal, one that everyone was constantly working toward. There was nothing quite like those early years! It truly was a combination of “The Right Place, The Right Time, and The Right People. The name and brand of Telluride has slowly gained national and international recognition and acclaim over the past four and one-half decades, and now is recognized as a true world-class ski resort, as envisioned all those years ago. Those initial ten years were so tenuous and uncertain, yet fulfilling at the same time, and proved that, even though THE RIGHT PEOPLE might change, THE RIGHT TIME might change, THE RIGHT PLACE has provided a venue for many now, and in the future, to live in and enjoy. Thanks, Telluride. What a ride!

CAMERON AND WINSTON KELLY have been making
annual trips to Colorado since childhood. Whether it was with family, friends or each other, they couldn’t get enough of the mountains. Cameron had always wanted to come to Telluride but its secluded location put the destination on the back burner. On their second wedding anniversary they made it a priority to visit, and it was love at first sight. Once they were here, the mountain town’s charm made their decision to move to Telluride an easy one. The awe-inspiring views were something they just couldn’t leave behind. Add the friendliness of the community, the unbelievable cuisine and of course, the gondola, and there was just no going back. The ease of life with so many opportunities right outside the front door is truly unique, and gives them an excitement for what each day will hold. The ability to telecommute gives the Kellys the freedom to operate their businesses remotely while enjoying the Telluride lifestyle. The superb convenience of the Telluride airport allows for ease of travel should they need to attend to business matters elsewhere. The friendly staff, charter services and flight options for their visiting guests make the Telluride airport a key amenity. Winston is a pilot so TEX gives him a whole realm of new possibilities. Living in their new home during their first amazing winter has already made Telluride feel like home. Moving from Texas was an adjustment for Cameron and Winston, and their dogs. They really bonded over the moments they had to figure out how to plow snow or learn to adjust cooking for high altitude. The Kellys love to have friends and family come visit and show them this beautiful place they now call home. Without fail their guests always leave saying, “Now we know why you don’t come back!” Plus, they know Telluride will be a wonderful place to share with children - someday.

TREC’S COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY
O
ne to One Mentoring was founded in 1994 by John Mansfield and Allan Gerstle, who were serving in Juvenile Diversion and Social Services at the time. They saw the opportunity for a youth mentoring organization to address the needs of at-risk youth in San Miguel County. Since its inception twenty-one years ago, the program has served hundreds of youth throughout the county. Presently, the opportunities addressed through the organization’s programs continue to focus on at-risk youth but have expanded to include a diverse array of needs, such as youth experiencing gender issues, grief, chronic health issues and a need for companionship.

As an affiliate of CIRE, a partnership between TREC and Telluride Arts District only seemed natural. TREC is excited to tap into its art connection stemming from Christie’s and proud to be a sponsor of Telluride Arts District. “TREC is a valued partner of Telluride Arts, and advances our mission by promoting the Arts District, exhibiting the work of local artists, and supporting the overarching mission of our organization with direct sponsorship and enthusiastic support from both staff and agents” said Kate Jones, Telluride Arts Executive Director (pictured right).

Telluride Arts District is continuing its vision with the restoration of the Telluride Transfer Warehouse (above and below), built in 1906, to become a center for the arts at the heart of Telluride. LTL was selected as the design team for the renovation of the Historic Landmark with plans including an open atrium at the east entry with a large tree and a retractable roof section open to the views and
mountain air. This sensitivity to the recent history of the building, combined with a warm, welcoming, intuitive design that uses a sustainably harvested wood material, won the favor of the community in selecting LTL. To view the work of talented local artists, visit our office lobbies, where pieces are on rotating display. ...

THE ART OF COLLECTION
Christie’s is built on a fundamental truth: that the experience of owning beautiful and special objects is an important part of people’s personal and cultural life. Christie’s is a name and place that speaks of extraordinary art, unparalleled service and expertise, as well as international glamour. Founded in 1766 by James Christie, Christie’s has since conducted the greatest and most celebrated auctions through the centuries providing a popular showcase for the unique and the beautiful. Christie’s offers around 350 auctions annually in over 80 categories, including all areas of fine and decorative arts, jewellery, photographs, collectibles, wine, and more. Prices range from $200 to over $100 million. Christie’s also has a long and successful history conducting private sales for its clients in all categories, with emphasis on Post-War & Contemporary, Impressionist & Modern, Old Masters and Jewellery. Christie’s has a global presence in 46 countries, with 10 salerooms around the world including in London, New York, Paris, Geneva, Milan, Amsterdam, Dubai, Zürich, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. More recently, Christie’s has led the market with expanded initiatives in growth markets such as Russia, China, India and the United Arab Emirates, with successful sales and exhibitions in Beijing, Mumbai and Dubai.

ABOVE THE COMPETITION The fabric of the Christie’s art auction house and its real estate network is woven quite differently than its competitor, Sotheby’s. The very foundation of ownership in the two entities is corporately and stylistically disparate. Christie’s is solely owned by one individual -- Francois Pinault -- who resides in Paris, is a multi-billionaire and whose portfolio also includes Gucci, Balenciaga and Stella McCartney, among others. He is known as possessing one of the finest art collections in the world, not to mention is a collector of some of the finest properties in Europe. Christie’s International Real Estate is fully supported by the auction house through joint marketing efforts with its chosen affiliates (not franchisees), allowing access to high net worth art collectors and property owners worldwide. The Sotheby’s trademark was acquired from the Sotheby’s Auction House and absorbed into a network of real estate, travel, hospitality and car rental companies by corporate conglomerate, Cendant. It was subsequently “spun off” by Cendant resulting in the formation of the publicly traded company, Realogy. Apollo Management then acquired Realogy in 2007 and its franchised network now includes Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, Century 21, Coldwell Banker, ERA, and Sotheby’s. The major differences between these “brands” is that of privately versus corporately driven businesses, “affiliated” versus “franchised” networks, and the fact that CIRE is fully owned and operated by the world’s finest art auction house, with shared clientele and marketing venues.

Sunset Ridge at Gray Head // $29,000,000 Sunset Ridge’s sense of arrival can only be described as awe-inspiring - cliff-side, on a private peninsula with a breathtaking mountainous panorama. The residence’s bold, yet simplistic, linear architecture naturally draws a first-time visitor to a glass entryway door offering a first hint of the refinement of finishes and viewscape beyond. The owner and the renowned Aspen architect Bill Poss have artfully designed a residence that not only frames the view, but seemingly integrates the mountains as an intrinsic element to the structure. Overlooking a pond reflecting the mountain peaks beyond and fed by a cascading stream running beneath the master suite bridge over waterfalls to the pond below, finishes and appointments were painstakingly and globally sourced by the design team. Town of Telluride
The Town of Telluride is like a small urban environment living in the body of a charming alpine
village. Nestled below striking vertical peaks, the magnificent valley is comprised of a quaint 16-block-long by six-block-wide grid where streets are typically a blizzard of activity. Children walk to and from school, dogs accompany owners to the bank and post office, friends bump into each other on virtually every corner, and anything can be tackled on foot or by bicycle. In Telluride, a cup of coffee and the morning paper are never more than a five-minute jaunt away; and neither is the ski resort, as two lifts and the Gondola — the innovative people-mover connecting Telluride and Mountain Village — rise up right from town. Additionally, whether one needs an ATM, wifi, a quick snack, or a birthday Altitude: 8,750 feet card, just about everything is available on, or Population: 2,300 adjacent to, main street, town’s lively epicenter. Annual Snowfall: 200-plus inches Average Winter Temperature: 39 high / 22 low Average Summer Temperature: 68 high / 44 low
Telluride was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1964 and takes its architectural standards very seriously — old structures are meticulously preserved, while new construction is monitored by strict and careful guidelines. As a result, Telluride’s residential homes all share a Victorian trend that’s traditional for some, contemporary for others, and its commercial district is a colorful display of restored and recreated western storefronts. And through this thoughtfully laid out floor plan, Telluride captures the bustling energy of any city neighborhood, yet pads it in a safe and neatly packaged, friendly little town. In fact, some might even go as far as to say that the cozy Telluride valley resembles a large family as homes are lined closely together, neighbors chat across balconies and the mountains above serve as a communal backyard enjoyed by everyone.

Mountain Village
Mountain Village is a spectacular neighborhood filled with big backyards and winding, treelined streets. Homes have privacy, yet are close enough together for neighbors to share the day’s events in the driveway or pass each other on a morning jog. In winter, skiers and snowboarders pull right off the slopes and up to their doorsteps, while on summer days kids toss footballs in the road without having to worry about traffic. As one of Colorado’s youngest communities, incorporated as a town and home-rule municipality in 1995, Mountain Village rests on the northern end of sunny Turkey Creek Mesa, encompassing more than 2,100 acres of forested mountainside. Prior to earning its very own spot on the map, the town underwent a significant research, development and design phase, having been conceptualized as a ski resort village for more than a dozen years. From there, a cobblestone pedestrian plaza at the base of the ski resort became the bustling Village Core, lined with boutiques, restaurants, hotels, spas, fire pits, bouldering area Altitude: 9,545 feet and skating rink. In addition, the Village Core is Population: 1,150 home to the state-of-the-art Telluride Conference Annual Snowfall: 300-plus inches Center, Telluride Ski & Golf Company’s headquarters, Average Winter Temperature: 39 high / 22 low Average Summer Temperature: 68 high / 44 low the Ski & Snowboard School, three chair lifts, and the Gondola — the transportation system linking Telluride and Mountain Village together in a stunning 13-minute ride. Surrounding the core of town is the 18-hole Telluride Championship Golf Course, as well as beautiful alpine residences that abut both the golf course and ski area. Mountain Village is renowned for its panoramic vistas and elegant sophistication with new developments and amenities popping up constantly, the most recent of which includes a new grocery store, post office and several new hotels.

Greater Telluride Region
The Telluride region has diverse areas that appeal to different types of people. The numerous mesas are about as close as one can get to living away from it all, without being away from it all. The vast expanses of sun-kissed stretches of land sit at the base of the area’s most dramatic peaks, meaning days are longer and views seem no more than an arm’s length away. Wildlife roams freely and property lines reach out to mingle among wilderness areas and national forests, suiting equestrians as well as those who love their space. Yet once in the car, all the mesas are less than 40 minutes from Telluride and Mountain Village, with certain 35-acre tracts uniquely positioned only 10 minutes away from the action. Then there are the numerous outlying towns, which boast community living that’s a little quieter than Telluride and Mountain Village. Heading south, residents actually go up in altitude to the old mining/mountain communities of Ophir, San Bernardo, Trout Lake and Rico, where neighbors live close to each other and to the mountains outside their doors. Heading north and west, residents go down to the slightly warmer and more agricultural towns of Placerville, Ridgway and Norwood, where homesteads come in all sizes and communities have social calendars all their own. And like the mesas, all the outlying communities are no more than 20 to 40 minutes from Telluride and Mountain Village.

Our partners are deeply embedded in the community, having been directly involved in the planned development of the Telluride area as a world-class ski resort. Our owners and the majority of our Telluride real estate agents are longtime Telluride locals who are passionate about their careers and about living in this spectacular mountain town. In a sense, they are ambassadors for this community, bringing Telluride to the rest of the world. In addition, the partners, brokers and assistants that make up the TREC team are some of the region’s most dynamic individuals -- a group of people who share energy, enthusiasm, a sense of purpose, and an ability to get things going and get things done.
Real estate is about personal relationships, and TREC strives to provide an unrivaled experience for buyers and sellers from beginning to end and beyond. Indeed, most TREC clients are clients for life. Our contacts with successful, high-networth clients run deep. And our longevity in the real estate business has placed us on a strong foundation for continued success. We are optimistic about both the future of real estate in Telluride and the broader health of our special resort community. We stand ready to ably guide both buyers and sellers toward their real estate goals in Telluride, Mountain Village and the surrounding area.
TREC brokers Ben Jackson and Garrett Simon were two of more than 100 agents from 30 luxury brokerages representing eight countries gathered in Jackson Hole, WY last year, for a ski networking event for Christie’s International Real Estate Affiliates, hosted by Jackson Hole Real Estate Associates. The private summit included a formal program of presentations and seminars by expert keynote speakers Jimmy Chin - National Geographic photographer, awardwinning filmmaker and 15-year veteran of the North Face team, and Katie Lance - CEO of a social media strategy and content development firm.
Jon Dwight, TREC Managing Director, joined an elite group of luxury real estate specialists at the annual Christie’s International Real Estate Global Owners Conference in Beverly Hills, CA. The invitation-only event hosted by the leading luxury real estate network took place at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and attracted luxury real estate professionals from more than 31 countries. The conference featured presentations by architectural innovator Charles Renfro, along with a host of global luxury market leaders and executives from the Christie’s auction house.
Leading TREC sales associate Garrett Simon was awarded the elite distinction of “Christie’s International Real Estate Luxury Specialist” following his participation in the second edition of the world’s leading luxury real estate network’s Top Agents Conference. Named TREC’s Broker of the Year, Simon was among the most successful real estate professionals within the Christie’s network who took part in the symposium, hosted at the Trump International Hotel in Chicago, IL.
