BLENDING THE WORLDS OF ART AND REAL ESTATE The fabric of the Christie’s art auction house and its real estate network is woven quite differently than its competitor, Sotheby’s. The very foundation of ownership in the two entities is corporately and stylistically disparate. Christie’s is solely owned by one individual — Francois Pinault — who resides in Paris, is a multi-billionaire and whose portfolio also includes Gucci, Balenciaga and Stella McCartney, among others. He is known as possessing one of the finest art collections in the world, not to mention is a collector of some of the finest properties in Europe.

The major differences between these “brands” is that of privately- versus corporately-driven businesses, “affiliated” versus “franchised” networks, and the fact that Christie’s International Real Estate is fully owned and operated by the world’s finest art auction house, with shared clientele and marketing venues.

Christie’s International Real Estate is fully supported by the auction house through joint marketing efforts with its chosen affiliates (not franchisees), allowing access to high-net-worth art collectors and property owners worldwide.

Furthermore, just as Christie’s curates great art sales, Christie’s International Real Estate assembles the world’s leading real estate experts, dedicated to providing the highest quality of personalized home buying and selling services. These trusted advisors are leaders in their local markets and meet our strict standards of excellence by demonstrating continual success in luxury property sales and upholding the value of the Christie’s brand.

The Sotheby’s trademark was acquired from the Sotheby’s Auction House and absorbed into a network of real estate, travel, hospitality and car rental companies by corporate conglomerate, Cendant. It was subsequently “spun off” by Cendant resulting in the formation of the publicly traded company, Realogy. Apollo Management then acquired Realogy in 2007 and its franchised network now includes Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, Century 21, Coldwell Banker, ERA and Sotheby’s.

Properties listed with Christie’s International Real Estate’s network gain unrivaled international exposure. Our marketing programs mix new media with proven techniques, constantly evolving to reach distinguished home buyers, affluent investors, and renowned business leaders. Our campaigns achieve results across diverse venues and approaches, including traditional print and digital collateral and advertising, social media and press coverage, high-profile events, and market-leading industry research.

Stronger through Community –

The Stronghouse

There’s a new kid in town – focused on locals and raised in the spirit of community. Up and coming brewmaster Sam Enders, who was once in the background, is now very much in the forefront of one of Telluride’s new businesses. In a time where things are so uncertain, Enders is certain of one thing: he’s going to brew good beer. Enders has a story like many who find themselves in Telluride. He grew up in Lyons and spent as much of his early 20s as he could snowboarding while working as a mechanic at car dealerships in Boulder, where he met his wife Sarah. When they moved to Telluride, he brought that experience to the ski resort as a diesel mechanic. Seven years after making the switch from mechanic to brewmaster apprentice at the Telluride Brewing Company (TBC), Enders apprenticed under Chris “Fish” Fish to learn the secrets of the trade. Although apprenticing as a brewmaster was a self-declared ‘janitor job’, Enders stuck with it and learned everything from cleaning and sanitary practices to craft brewing’s curious mix of chemistry and art. The chemistry part is in his blood; his dad was a chemist and sparked the interest for home brewing in Enders and his older brother Matt, with whom he always talked of having a brewery. Through Telluride Brewing Company, Enders quickly became accustomed to winning medals and training others. To give you an idea, when Enders first started, TBC brewed less than 1,000 barrels the first year. When he left, they were producing 10,000 barrels. Enders saw huge growth, and he learned enough to take it to the next level at The Stronghouse.

@TRECTelluride

7

“I’m very mechanically minded,” Enders said. “TBC grew super-fast and it wasn’t expected. We were always trying to figure out how to add more equipment, scale up recipes, and push how to keep consistency. Using what I learned at TBC allowed me to figure out the vision of the way I wanted things set up at The Stronghouse. There’s even computer technology now that allows me to control and monitor tanks and temperatures remotely. Something we always dreamed about at TBC! Now that I have the process down, the biggest challenge is crafting recipes. What I admired about Fish is he could craft a recipe so easily and nail a world-class beer on the first try. I don’t think most people realize what an artistic skill that is.” Enders is now tinkering with recipes and dialing in to the types of beers that locals want. His goal is to have something new every season. Enders is currently developing a well-rounded menu for The Stronghouse, utilizing as many local ingredients as possible. He is currently sourcing hops from Billy Goat Hop Farm in Montrose. “Five years ago there weren’t as many ingredient options from Colorado, now we’re seeing a ton,” Enders said. “All of our brewing tanks came from Montrose and All American Steel. I am very focused on sourcing locally and supporting the local economy.” “Colorado has a long, rich craft brewing history. Boulder Beer was one of the first craft breweries to open after prohibition ended,” Enders added. “And others followed. Good water is key, as it’s the largest ingredient, and Telluride has some of the best water.”

8

The Stronghouse gets its name from the building it is housed in, the 1892 Stronghouse Building, named after having survived an early 1900s fire, because it was indeed, well, the strongest house. The building has previously been home to La Paloma Mexican restaurant, Chez Pierre French restaurant, an art gallery, and The Daily Planet until 2003. “The Stronghouse is still in really good shape, and has a lot of soul,” Enders said. Building and business owners Victoria Chapus and her brother Raymond Cook have had a house in Telluride for 20-plus years and have owned the Stronghouse building for three. For Victoria, the brewery was also a passion project, as her brother Raymond has always been really into the craft brew culture. The undertaking really speaks to Enders’ inner child, and he sometimes looks at his new establishment as a ‘glorified home brew setup’. “The whole brewing industry is really friendly and loose. It’s my dream come true to have my own brew pub and make the kind of beers I want to make. It’s been a really fulfilling process blending the owners’ and my visions together. Craft brewing is about sharing and creating and trying to make exceptional quality beer,” said Enders. “We had a dream project to have a brewery, and although the owners were tied up in business elsewhere, they had the vision and spared no expense in keeping the heritage and history of the building while adding all the modern amenities inside,” Enders said.

www.telluriderealestatecorp.com

With a full bar, and GM Mike Hayes at the helm, Enders said the full kitchen will serve semi-Bavarian themed food, well rounded for everyone. “Some of the vegetarian options look better than the meat options!” Enders added. The Stronghouse also plans to cater to locals with blue plate specials and drink highlights and specials. Enders described a local watering hole where locals want to come drink and hang out and see people they know, grab a quick bite and even pint cans in a 4-pack to go. Their original plan was to serve food until midnight and offer delivery via a Belgium cart eBike in the Telluride city limits. “My ideal is to hit the niches not covered,” Enders said. “TJ and Josh Klein at Smugglers have been super supportive and the camaraderie of the brew community in Telluride has really stayed true to the soul of Telluride. I’ve always been attracted to the industry. My Dad was a chemist and chemists typically never share, but the brewing community is super friendly. You go most places and get grand tours, free samples and details on process and how others tweak. It’s very friendly as we are all always tinkering and thinking it’s us (craft brewers) vs. the Big Guys – Bud, Miller and Coors.” When asked what he will tinker with first, Enders said he’ll offer several fares. “The IPA is here to stay and people are also going back to lighter more drinkable beer, some with less alcohol, along with lighter pilsners. We obviously also want to make beer for craft brew drinkers, we’re a brew pub, that’s what we do.” Enders has not only been working on bringing a brew pub up from its infancy, but he and wife Sarah recently welcomed a baby girl, Skadi (pronounced “Scottie”). Taking her name from the Norse goddess of skiing, winter and archery, Skadi fits right in with her parents’ lifestyle. When comparing the nerves of brewing his first batch and raising his infant daughter, aside from no sleep, Enders said overall it helped him realize that he did, in fact, know what he was doing. On how he’s handling his new-found fame, Enders replied, “I used to hide behind Fish and Tommy. I grew up in a small town and like to know the people you see every day. A lot of people know me now that I don’t know,” Enders exclaimed. “It’s true that we all feed off each other and it’s nice to make good beer for people. My plan is to keep making great beers and maybe earn some awards. Five years ago I never would have imagined.” “It took years of work and exorbitant rent and working long hours. It takes some time to make it in Telluride, not just luck,” Enders said. “I feel very fortunate and worked really hard to do what I want to do work-wise. I was very focused when I wanted to be a mechanic and then my focus turned to this. It’s also my approach to raising my daughter, I always want her to follow what she wants to do. I have had so

@TRECTelluride

much fun experimenting and experiencing so much change – and change is the constant. We should embrace it and have fun with it.” “It really is about locals and small business owners that give it that fun, small town vibe. It’s so easy to get lost in tourism; it’s still really important to focus on the community feel – that’s why I’m still here.” Enders added, “I am truly blessed and fortunate to have these blessings and life. Living here for the past 12 years, I still love the Telluride lifestyle and I am always in awe of what we have the opportunity to do – skiing, hiking, etc. I don’t know what I did to be so lucky.” We all know the harder you work the luckier you get, and Telluride is lucky to experience the hops-based fruits of Enders’ hard work and passion for craft brewing. Cheers!

Hats off to Camp Bird a new Millinery studio in Telluride

Kim Lake has not only found a place to hang her hat in Telluride, but she’s also making them by hand at her new millinery studio, Camp Bird. One of the few milliners in the area, or nation for that matter, what began with an art degree has turned into a lifelong passion project. Beginning her art education at the University of Texas and completing it at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Lake grew up in El Paso, Texas, and spent her childhood backpacking and camping in the Telluride region. As a young girl she fell in love with the area. “I just love Telluride! I feel like I found my place in the world when I moved here and I’ve loved living here for the past nine years. I have a daughter who’s 11 and she’s living the dream childhood.” Lake’s journey to living the dream included stints in the design industry, including furniture buying and working at Two Skirts, an upscale Telluride Main Street retailer. “I understand aesthetic and people’s style. I don’t like to follow fashion ‘trends’, it’s more about your personal aesthetic – what makes you comfortable and what makes you feel good. I think having all these different artistic endeavors leads you down a certain path, and there was this moment where I just knew I had to find my voice and vision of what people would love and do my own thing.”

10

www.telluriderealestatecorp.com

And love her vision they certainly do. Lake has currently made several samples and is now taking custom orders. Each hat is crafted by hand, one by one. Lake doesn’t use any pre-made forms and each piece is sculptural – each crown hand-molded such that no two hats are the same. Millinery flourished during the 19th century and many of the processes and techniques cannot be replaced by today’s machines. Due to the close relationship between headwear and garments, many famous milliners were engaged as both milliner and fashion designer, such as Rose Bertin, Jeanne Lanvin and Coco Chanel. While it’s pretty rare to be a milliner, Lake says what’s more rare is finding the machinery to execute her art, through steam, pressure and sanding. “I have this really neat machine from the 1900s that had to be completely refurbished with a new motor and electrical parts. My plating machine is what I use to break the brim in, and it runs completely off steam. It’s one of a kind. I had a machinist make it for me,” she adds. Lake prefers steam heat to electric, as steam can reach temperatures up to 300 degrees and really makes the fibers come together to hold the hat’s shape. Lake says that tons of sanding gives her pieces their shape and velvety finish. She credits her husband, an architect with Tommy Hein, with machine repair and maintenance, citing that there is no owner’s manual. “When I started looking into how hats were made, I discovered I just wanted to know more,” Lake said. “All the hatters hold the tricks of the trade tightly to their chest. Many aren’t very willing to mentor and teach. I really had to piece it all together and figure it out.” Her studio is currently located in an old house from the 1800s, a contributing historical building in Telluride. Lake finds it fitting, as her techniques are hundreds of years old, and some of the machines, much older. She does credit Susan Carrolan – the Aspen Hat Lady – for allowing her to come in for a brief apprenticeship. Although their processes are very different, Lake gathered more knowledge on how to make her specific style of felt hat – heirloom quality meant to last a lifetime and be passed down. She also creates custom silk liners, and embosses quotes, dates or a person’s name in gold foil on the inside of the leather sweatband. Lake typically has about five hats in process at any given time, as the old machines take time to warm up and each step is unique. “Some hats come to life very quickly and others take a little longer to find their shape. There’s not a consistent flow for each hat.” Lake relates her craft to people, each of her unique creations taking shape via their own path, after being subjected to pressure and changing environments. “It’s amazing where your different paths in life lead you to what you’re currently doing. I’m finally doing something that is completely me and I’m working for myself. I’ve had these ideas for a long time and just hadn’t pursued my passion to the fullest until now. I love hats! I wear hats all the time: baseball hats, beanies, cowboy hats. It’s just part of my style.”

@TRECTelluride

“I believe in being part of the fabric of the community. My goal is to do something very authentic that is handmade, not disposable. Something that gives nod to the history of the area. Even the name Camp Bird is nod to a mine just outside Ouray. I use old-fashioned machinery to make something totally unique – just like Telluride.” Her passion for the outdoors adds to her energy and enthusiasm, “Every day I have to do something outside – mountain biking and road biking are hugely important, and I love to ski in winter. In Telluride there’s no drama to bike or ski, you can just change and get out there. The lifestyle is so amazing.” Asked where she sees Camp Bird in five years, Lake would like to have her own studio space downtown on Main Street where people can just walk in and the art of the craft is more

12

accessible. “I love the authenticity of seeing the trade done right in front of you. It’s cool for people to see the machines and what a lumpy piece of felt transforms into.” As far as her favorite hat to make? “My favorite type to make is called a Gus – probably not the most popular, a more traditional style cowboy hat with a 3-3/4" crown height in front and a 5-3/4" in back. I just think it looks so cool and you have to own it, it’s a boss hat.” With all the hats Lake currently wears, she’s thrilled to have found such a perfect fit. “I’m so happy. I wake up happy to come into the studio to make things.” Check out more of Lake’s 50X and 100X custom beaver hats on Instagram: @campbirdtelluride

TELLURIDE’S NEW LUNCH LADIES LAUNCH

Lunch Money [the quick lunch alternative] Whether it’s their insatiable upbeat attitudes and optimism, their combined business prowess, or simply the savvy they bring to the project, Sheila Phinny and Cynthia Sommers are onto something big – a faster healthy lunch in Telluride. “This has been something that we’ve thought about a lot and in our group of girlfriends especially,” Phinny said. “We’ve talked about the need for a healthier lunch alternative in town. My family is in California and when I go out there it’s just so easy to eat something healthy, and quickly!”

“Much of the food I want to eat I have to make at home,” Phinny said. “A lot of people that we have talked to wanted the same things we did and we thought, ‘If there is this void, why don’t we do it ourselves?’”

Sommers was immediately taken with the idea. “Sheila came over one day and presented her idea to me and after talking and brainstorming for about 30 minutes, I said, ‘I’m in!’”

Sommers added, “When I would have those moments of feeling scared or worried I would think, ‘What if I wasn’t Sheila’s partner or she was doing it all by herself or with

@TRECTelluride

someone else?’ and I just knew I was in the right place because I wanted to be a part of this project, to partner with her and fill a need in our community. We feel like we are opening the perfect business model at the right time.” Sommers continued, “Lunch Money is focused on takeaway only. Nothing made to order, except serving one hot soup per day, to really keep things moving. Get in and get out and still have time for a moment to yourself on your lunch break, extra time to run a few errands or head out to play in the mountains.” Phinny said, “The inspiration for the menu is healthy convenience. We want to discover our customer favorites and then also offer riffs on those items to keep things exciting. Our goal is to play with seasonal ingredients as much as possible and really let that drive our creativity.” Sommers added, “Menu items like tuna salad collard green wraps, kimchi udon bowls and vegan Caesar kale will be really fresh and different.” Sommers included that the takeaway lunch spot will offer proteins to add to salads or bowls as well as soups, smart sweets, desserts and more. “We are extremely excited to bring in cold-pressed juices and elixir shots from Pressed Juicery out of LA.” Phinny continued, “We are going to be as organic as we can with fresh, healthy, colorful options. We want to offer things people can get excited about and didn’t have access to before Lunch Money.”

The Lunch Ladies have also partnered with Brady Pitt from Pescado who will be rolling sushi and creating poke bowls for them. Sommers said, “We are teaming up with really fun people. It’s been amazing to see the support from people we’ve reached out to in the restaurant business.” “It has been really lovely how supportive and kind everyone has been,” Phinny added. “There really is room for everyone and we are believers in the theory of abundance here in Telluride.” Having volunteered together for the Telluride AIDS benefit for many years, the entrepreneurs knew that they played well off each other professionally. They also inherited good bones for their location. Their space formerly housed popular lunch spot “The Brown Bag,” and most recently has been home to the “Gargoyle’s” novelty store. “We are so excited about designing the space and working through the remodel,” Phinny said. “We understand so much more about what goes into the process. I never thought I’d be saying things like, ‘the type II hood runs off a single phase 60-amp panel!’” Phinny said, laughing. Sommers added, “It’s been a learning curve, but we are taking it in stride. Of course there will be bumps but we are so motivated and excited it’s all kind of falling into place and flowing right now so we know we’re on the right path. Plus, very random yet positive serendipitous things keep happening for us. We’ll be talking about something we need and someone who can fill that need will walk by.” For more information on Lunch Money’s opening date and latest and greatest menus, visit lunchmoneytelluride.com.

DESIGN TRENDS for 2021 and beyond

INDUSTRIAL STYLE There is a continuing trend of embracing industrial aesthetics in residential design by the introduction of metals, wood and exposed brick walls. Simple lines and the absence of surface elements are also characteristic of the industrial style. Both finishings and furniture in silver, gold, tin and copper can take this style a step beyond.

INDOOR/OUTDOOR LIVING Bring the outdoors in, and the indoors out. Create rooms that effortlessly open to the outdoors to enjoy terraces and balconies all year round with glass door systems that will allow the space to open completely when the good weather arrives. WAYFAIR

A benefit of these glass “walls is the introduction of lots of natural light. Another trend to bring the outdoors in is small indoor gardens and living walls.

WHITE, BLACK AND SHADES OF GRAY White walls or floor coverings give luminosity to rooms and visually enlarge them. It also reflects light, helping in the case of dark rooms or interiors. White is especially effective when accented with black, gray and neutrals for stair railings, fixtures and other architectural details. SMART HOMES The convenience of home features, like lighting and heating/cooling controls, that can be automated with a smart phone app, voice-activated speaker or in-home video panel has become very popular and affordable. In addition to the convenience, there can be benefits like lower utility expenses. The smart home technology is rapidly changing as companies keep up with the demand for more features and efficiency.

HOME OFFICE With almost everyone experiencing working remotely and learning at home, multifunctional spaces are becoming more relevant. It helps to be flexible and use space that is best suited for your own needs – you may PHOTO BY JULIA M CAMERON ON PEXELS

need a home office space more than a formal dining room. Guest rooms, a bedroom area and even closets can double as offices.

SUSTAINABILITY Understanding how the relationship with the environment should develop, architectural design of homes using energy-saving technology, locally-sourced materials, and available resources has emerged. Adding energy creation, such as solar panels on the site, along with other energy-efficient features not only saves money but can contribute to improving the health and quality of life for those living in these homes.

KITCHENS AND BATHS The kitchen remains to be the center of the home. With cooking becoming such a popular family activity, there is a need for a lot of space to accommodate everyone. Kitchens are stepping away from the wall with a floating configuration with cabinetry blocks and islands, which is light and airy and allows for better flow. Our bathrooms have become places of relaxation as we unwind in a bathtub or jacuzzi and create a spa-like atmosphere.

LESS IS MORE Spending more time in our houses gives us the opportunity to remove things from view by storing elements that are not essential or selling or giving away what we don’t need, and then organizing what remains according to priorities. This will result in

BOLD COLOR While the muted tones and black and white are trending, it does not mean that we should give up color. A pop of color can really enhance the look of neutrals on other surfaces, and can be easily introduced with the use of textiles – pillows, couches and rugs. There’s an explosion of shapes and colors to choose from to create spaces

full of life.

Wood paneling, done in smaller doses, can introduce ample warmth and a rustic modern feel. The trend is toward lighter wood shades to complement the neutral colors and keep things light and airy. The wood can be

CURVY SHAPES Rounded shapes, either in furniture pieces or architectural elements, are introducing an organic softness to interior and exterior spaces. With a need more than ever to invite the tranquil energy of nature into our homes, it makes sense to add waves, circles and curves into some linear spaces.

The Town of Telluride

is like a small urban environment living in the body of a charming alpine village. Nestled below striking vertical peaks, the magnificent valley is comprised of a quaint 16-block-long by six-block-wide grid where streets are typically a blizzard of activity. Children walk to and from school, dogs accompany owners to the bank and post office, friends bump into each other on virtually every corner, and anything can be tackled on foot or by bicycle. In Telluride, a cup of coffee and the morning paper are never more than a five-minute jaunt away; and neither is the ski resort, as two lifts and the Gondola — the innovative people-mover connecting Telluride and Mountain Village — rise up right from town. Additionally, whether one needs an ATM, wifi, a quick snack, or a birthday card, just about everything is available on, or adjacent to, Main Street, Telluride’s lively epicenter. Telluride was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1964 and takes its architectural standards very seriously — old structures are meticulously preserved, while new construction is monitored by strict and careful guidelines. As a result, Telluride’s residential homes all share a Victorian trend that’s traditional for some, contemporary for others, and its commercial district is a colorful display of restored and recreated western storefronts. And through this thoughtfully laid out floor plan, Telluride captures the bustling energy of any city neighborhood, yet pads it in a safe and neatly packaged, friendly little town. In fact, some might even go as far as to say that the cozy Telluride valley resembles a large family as homes are lined closely together, neighbors chat across balconies, and the mountains above serve as a communal backyard enjoyed by everyone. @TRECTelluride

Mountain Village

is a spectacular neighborhood filled with big backyards and winding, tree-lined streets. Homes have privacy, yet are close enough together for neighbors to share the day’s events in the driveway or pass each other on a morning jog. In winter, skiers and snowboarders pull right off the slopes and up to their doorsteps, while on summer days kids toss footballs in the road without having to worry about traffic. As one of Colorado’s youngest communities, incorporated as a town and home-rule municipality in 1995, Mountain Village rests on the northern end of sunny Turkey Creek Mesa, encompassing more than 2,100 acres of forested mountainside. Prior to earning its very own spot on the map, the town underwent a significant research, development and design phase, having been conceptualized as a ski resort village for more than a dozen years. From there, a cobblestone pedestrian plaza at the base of the ski resort became the bustling Village Core, lined with boutiques, restaurants, hotels, spas, fire pits, bouldering area and skating rink. In addition, the Village Core is home to the state-of-the-art Telluride Conference Center, Telluride Ski & Golf Company’s headquarters, the Ski & Snowboard School, three chair lifts, and the Gondola — the transportation system linking Telluride and Mountain Village together in a stunning 13-minute ride. Surrounding the core of town is the 18-hole Telluride Championship Golf Course, as well as beautiful alpine residences that abut both the golf course and ski area. Mountain Village is renowned for its panoramic vistas and elegant sophistication with new developments and amenities popping up constantly, the most recent of which includes a new grocery store, post office and several new hotels. @TRECTelluride

The Telluride Region

has diverse areas that appeal to different types of people. The numerous mesas are about as close as one can get to living away from it all, without being away from it all. The vast expanses of sun-kissed stretches of land sit at the base of the area’s most dramatic peaks, meaning days are longer and views seem no more than an arm’s length away. Wildlife roams freely and property lines reach out to mingle among wilderness areas and national forests, suiting equestrians as well as those who love their space. Yet once in the car, all the mesas are less than 40 minutes from Telluride and Mountain Village, with certain 35-acre tracts uniquely positioned only 10 minutes away from the action. Then there are the numerous outlying towns, which boast community living that’s a little quieter than Telluride and Mountain Village. Heading south, residents actually go up in altitude to the old mining/mountain communities of Ophir, San Bernardo, Trout Lake and Rico, where neighbors live close to each other and to the mountains outside their doors. Heading north and west, residents go down to the slightly warmer and more agricultural towns of Placerville, Ridgway and Norwood, where homesteads come in all sizes and communities have social calendars all their own. And like the mesas, all the outlying communities are no more than 20 to 40 minutes from Telluride and Mountain Village.
