A QUICK HISTORY LESSON ➤

1850s

Gorgie - Gaelic origin ➤

gor gyn - “upper wedge”

gor cyn - “big field”

Dalry - Gaelic origin ➤

dail rig - “place of the fields”

dail ruigh - “King’s Field”

The Industrial Revolution and close proximity to the major rail lines caused this area to expand, rapidly constructing factories and tenements for workers.

In the 1960s through the 1980s factory closures led to job loss and economic hardship for the area.

SUSTAINABLE CITY “LOOK UP! The roof of our Education building is now covered in solar panels that generate about the same amount of electricity as an average house uses in a year. At Gorgie City Farm we are committed to reducing our energy consumption by using energy-efficient lighting, added insulation and draught-proofing wherever possible. You can play your part too, by switching off lights in the farm’s toilets after use, making sure taps aren’t left running and using the recycling points located around the farm for your rubbish.” - Gorgie City Farm photograph by Clau Muciño

creates new transit connections and walkable spaces - increases pedestrian pathways

renews public health by improving air quality and increasing access to nature

creates spaces that are protected from the street (safe for children’s play spaces)
