"Homecoming 2012: It's Where You Belong" begins for ORU alumni this weekend

Homecoming. Every spring you hear this word echo in the halls of Oral Roberts University. However, this year is different. With the groundbreaking of the new Armand Hammer Alumni-Student Center last month, students and alumni have a lot to celebrate.
Facts about ORU Chapel Service
Debbie George, director of Communications for ORU alumni relations, invites all alumni to come for this year's Homecoming on February 10-11. "This year our theme is, 'Homecoming 2012: It's where you belong.' We want all alumni to know that they are still part of the ORU family. Homecoming is a great time to come back to campus and see all the positive changes that have taken place," George said. "With the new Alumni-Student Center under construction this spring, it's an especially exciting time to be on campus." There are many events that are planned, but it is the connection to ORU that makes alumni come back. "When alumni have good feelings about ORU, they are more likely to want to stay connected to what's happening with current students. They are more likely to see the value of giving back by investing their time or making gifts," George said. "Alumni can serve as mentors to current students and are sometimes in a position to hire other graduates, or provide internships for students." Jentre Olsen, president of the Student Association at ORU, agrees that Homecoming is the perfect way for alumni and students to connect. "Homecoming is a week to be proud of ORU, of all that we have to offer such as athletics, fellowship and to worship God," said Olsen. "It's a week to celebrate who we are." Chancellor Roberts Facts about ORU Chapel Service
Many years ago, Stephen Mansfield was just an ordinary student getting a college degree at Oral Roberts University. He graduated in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in history and philosophy. Little did he know that his time at the school would shape his writing abilities to help him become a New York Times best-selling author. Now he's coming back to ORU to speak at the Homecoming chapel at 11 a.m. CT on Friday. "I didn't always want to be an author. After I left ORU, I went to be pastor. Eventually I started pursing my master's degree and started to read a lot," Mansfield said. "I fell in love with language and started writing articles. That led me to write my first book on Winston Churchill." Having written books such as "The Faith of George W. Bush," "The Faith of Barack Obama" and "Where Has Oprah Taken Us," Mansfield tends to get a lot of backlash from the Christian and political community. "At ORU, I learned a lot about faith and how faith shapes leadership. Having a biblical worldview is important. I like to write about people that are shaping our generation from a faith perspective," Mansfield said. "A lot of conservatives don't want to believe it, but Obama is faith-based in some way. The belief of our country's leaders reveals our times, and they shape our times." Besides having grown academically at ORU, Mansfield was spiritually impacted. "I got saved at ORU. Listening to Oral Roberts evangelize and attending classes meant a lot to me. ORU taught me the importance of a Biblical worldview," Mansfield said. "Worldviews are what shape laws and society. I had a desire to change the world and be a leader." Having a chance to come back to ORU and speak in chapel is an event that Mansfield is excited about. "I'm looking forward to coming to speak at chapel. ORU is dear to me and I respect Dr. Rutland. It will be fun hanging out on campus with my wife and going to the basketball game on Saturday," Mansfield said. "I can't stress enough how it transformed my life. What I do every day is connected to something I learned at ORU." Mansfield's inspirations for his writings draw from multiple sources. "I've been shaped by the writings of Winston Churchill and Francis Schaeffer. But my calling has been inspired by the Great Commission. God wants us to disciple to different groups and cultures." Mansfield said. "Like Oral Roberts said, 'We are to go into every man's world.' My writings have opened doors to places that I couldn't have gone through otherwise." Mansfield believes that ORU alumni and current students are here for a reason. "A lot of ORU grads are discouraged by what's going on in our country. It's an amazing time to get in the culture and change lives," Mansfield said. "People are hungry and open. We need to be bold and realize that God brought us into the kingdom for such a time as this." The chapel service will air at noon ET/11 a.m. CT on DirecTv Channel 363 or online at http://oruedu.com/0.

ORU committee promotes environmental sustainability By Sara Rozalina Krstevski ('12)
Whole Person Scholarship Chancellor Roberts Facts about ORU Chapel Service
The Oral Roberts University green campus committee was created in Fall 2008 as a subcommittee of the Institutional Improvement and Student Learning Committee to increase efforts and interest in environmental sustainability on campus. Run by faculty, staff and students, there has been a significant growth of interest in the past two years. Cal Easterling, director of Institutional Research and Assessment at Oral Roberts University, says this is an important project that the campus should be aware of. "It's an ongoing initiative to achieve sustainability, help protect the environment and minimize ORU's carbon footprint," Easterling said. "This sustainability means that we can continue on a less expensive basis by saving money. Energy costs go down among other things. Those resources can be rechanneled into areas that will benefit students, such as more faculty and more programs." Also heavily involved in the green campus committee is Stephen Herr, ORU professor of physical and environmental science. "There are different ways that we are getting the students involved. Students have the option of creating their own gardens in the greenhouse on campus and different ways of recycling used items," Herr said. "I think the recycling of plastic bottles have been the most successful. We also have filtered water fountains, and the one near the Deli has had about 70,000 bottles of water filled in the past two years." In order to increase awareness and encourage students to participate further, it must become a more convenient process. "We meet every month and try to answer any concerns that we have for any of the programs that aren't working properly," Herr said. "We are working on increasing energy savings and creating more convenient access for the students."

ORU social work students attend event at state Capitol By Sara Rozalina Krstevski ('12)
Whole Person Scholarship Chancellor Roberts Facts about ORU Chapel Service
Oral Roberts University's Social Work students had the opportunity to attend the National Association of Social Workers Legislative Day at the state Capitol recently. Lanny Endicott, ORU associate professor of Social Work, sponsored the students from his Social Welfare Policy class. About 21 students had the privilege to attend and meet other social work students from around the state. "This is an annual event sponsored by National Association of Social Workers designed to expose students to the Capitol and the work that goes on there," Endicott said. "The goal is ultimately to tie social workers more into the political process and its effects on clients that social workers serve." The students had a chance to tour the Capitol, sit in on state Senate and state House deliberations, talk to Legislators, and even visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. "This adds to the students' breadth and depth of understanding the political process," Endicott said. "Students must be involved to be effective social workers and advocates for human rights, social justice, and providing vital resources for Oklahoma's disadvantaged. This process provides a field trip to see in action the things we talk about in class. A key goal in social work education is teaching students to be advocates promote humane causes, programs, and help for those who don't have a voice." Endicott believes that this will benefit ORU by increasing involvement in the community. "I believe this process is an important goal for college education in general and ORU's focus on educating the whole person in specific," Endicott. "We want graduates of the ORU Social Work program to not only be competent working with clients they serve, but advocates for change of the various systems that affects these very clients."

ORU student named Mentor of the Year by Tulsa mayor By Sara Rozalina Krstevski ('12)
Whole Person Scholarship Chancellor Roberts Facts about ORU Chapel Service
Coming from war-torn Liberia, Frankie Miamen, a senior at Oral Roberts University, was recently named Mentor of the Year by Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett. Besides working on graduating this May with a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Miamen's volunteer efforts with an ORU Outreach program Man to Man have been recognized. "We tutor middle school football players at McClain in North Tulsa. We do this to give back to the community," Miamen said. "Having grown up in the inner city, I want to be there to empower, encourage and help them realize their full potential as students." Miamen was born in Liberia during a time of civil war. Having had the experience to live in refugee camps, he knows that it is only by the grace of God that his family was able to move to the U.S. "At McClain, lot of students don't have a father figure, and they have no one to motivate them do to their work," Miamen said. "They need to realize that doing the work will let them play the sports, because if they're not eligible school-wise they can't get a sport scholarship." Coming back from Christmas break, Miamen finds out that he has been nominated for Mentor of the Year. "I come back and find out that Dexter Sullivan, the founder of Man to Man, referred me to the Mayor, and it came as a complete surprise," Miamen said. "I'm 22 years old and sitting with all the nominees at the Mayor's Mentoring Breakfast, I noticed that I was by far the youngest person there. This just shows that no matter what age, you are you can still impact lives." Miamen credits ORU to helping him do what he does with the kids at McClain. "The life lessons you learn as being a student here are important," Miamen said. "I can take those lessons and apply it to the students at McClain, and I can show them that they can go to college as well." Miamen's inspiration also draws from his family and future aspirations. "Growing up education was stressed by my parents, and we are all striving to potentially go back home and help the people back in Liberia," Miamen said. "Right after school, I want to go into sports management either with the NBA or NFL. In the end, it's about giving back."

ORU students help poorest region in Europe By Sara Rozalina Krstevski ('12)
Whole Person Scholarship Chancellor Roberts Facts about ORU Chapel Service
When Oral Roberts University President Dr. Mark Rutland says "It's time for the offering," he is greeted with a large cheer and applause from over 3,000 students willing to give. Not your traditional response for an offering from college students, but its part of what makes ORU different. The first missions project of 2012 was to help Shining Light Ministries raise money for the distribution of flour for making bread in Serbia. Shining Light Ministries is a charity organization based in North America that provides humanitarian aid and the gospel to the Western Balkans region. This particular project took place in a town called Leskovac in Southern Serbia to a community that has a 90 percent unemployment rate. Slobodan Krstevski, president of Shining Light Ministries, is thankful for ORU's partnership. "I've already had a positive impression of Oral Roberts University as a godly institution," Krstevski said. "The fact that ORU is thinking outside of the institution and caring for others in need shows that they are really living the Gospel." The project had a total cost of $4,800 and helped 400 refugee families. "Very often, these people have nothing in their cupboards. This flour is going to keep them alive during the winter. This is how important flour is over there. It is also a tool to spread the Gospel," Krstevski said. "The students are not waiting to finish their studies to do what God is telling them to do. They are doing it now. Very few schools do that." Thomson Mathew, dean of the ORU College of Theology and Ministry, stresses the impact that these chapel missions offerings are having on the students. "We want to make them aware of the needs of the world and develop in them a lifestyle of compassion and giving," said Mathew. "This idea of chapel offerings has touched the entire campus and has moved us to be more compassionate and aware of the pain of the world." Slobodan Krstevski believes that this project will help ORU students grow spiritually and in maturity. "This shows that ORU students are not only on the right track for studies, but that ORU is preparing the young people to think outside themselves and that is an invaluable experience," Krstevski said. "They don't just think about making a difference; they show it through their actions." The goal for ORU chapel offerings during the 2011-2012 school year is to raise $130,000 for missions. For more information about Shining Light Ministries, go to www.SLM-Balkans.org. Editor's Note: The writer of this story, Sara Rozalina Krstevski, an ORU senior majoring in Media with a concentration in Convergence Journalism, was the best resource for this story because she is the daughter of Slobodan Krstevski, president of Shining Light Ministries.

Students sacrifice spring break to make impact in Haiti By Sara Rozalina Krstevski ('12)
Whole Person Scholarship Chancellor Roberts Facts about ORU Chapel Service
At ORU, spring break is a time when young people have the chance to practice what they learn. The ORU College of Education and the Anna Vaughn College of Nursing are planning a joint missions trip from March 19-24 to Port-auPrince, Haiti, to help children reach their full potential. Teaming up with Fishers of Men Ministries International, ORU nursing and education majors will gain first-hand experience volunteering at the orphanage run by the ministry. Debi Lammert, an ORU nursing faculty member, and Jean Mosely, an ORU education faculty member, are joining the students this spring. "We are going there to help the children. First, we have to assess what they need, create development plans and then teach the caregivers how to help these children," Lammert said. "Lots of the children are traumatized from the earthquake, not being cared for and not having parents." Kim Boyd, dean of ORU College of Education, believes that the students will make a long-term impact on the orphanage there. "The students will have the opportunity to train the staff and give them strategies and skills to help the children with developmental skills," Boyd said. "To go on this multi-disciplined missions trip is what Chancellor Oral Roberts envisioned. The students will have to take their skills and put them into practice with a disposition of service." The students will be ministering to about 140 children who are in need of assessment and medical care to help them grow and thrive. "We will screen the children for intellectual and social development delays who have trouble with learning and have emotional difficulties," Lammert said. "The need is to identify the problems of the children and to help them improve." Boyd believes this will greatly benefit ORU and its students. "It's what the heart of ORU is all about," Boyd said. "This gives the students the realization of their calling while at the same time it helps them develop their skills." ORU College of Education students participate in community outreach at Tulsa schools
Whole Person Scholarship
By Sara Rozalina Krstevski '12
Facts about ORU
Last week, Oral Roberts University's College of Education had approximately 70 teacher candidates, faculty, and staff members descending upon two Tulsa Public Schools for community outreach projects. At Chouteau Elementary School, students helped make the school more child-friendly.
Chapel Service
ORU education professor Evie Lindberg believes that making an impact in the community is what ORU students are here to do.
Chancellor Roberts
"Our motto in the College of Education is 'Transformed Educators, Transforming Society, a Miracle Ahead, a Transformed Generation,'" Lindberg said. "Our students were able to give back to the community by transforming this school in about six hours and showing the student body that 56 college education majors and 10 faculty members gladly gave their time and energy to make their school a special place for them to be proud of and to attend." Ricky Weisser, sophomore education major, agrees. "It helps to see the children's faces when they see that you're helping brighten their school up," he said. "It was a blast. I look forward to doing it again." Most importantly, the goal to make an impact on the children in the schools was accomplished. "The children were very excited and made statements like, 'Oh, Look, there is a Panda Bear by our classroom.' 'That looks so cool!' 'Oh, come and see this one.' To observe students light up and hear the joy in their voices, it doesn't get any better," Lindberg said. "The Chouteau principal and faculty welcomed us and were so happy to see so much accomplished in such a short time. They were thrilled that it didn't cost them a dime, and it was a joy for us to give them this gift." Lindberg informs us that there are numerous ways that this benefits ORU students and faculty. "First, we demonstrate servant leadership at work. Second, it shows the community how we not only care about academics, but we care about developing our students' disposition as future educators and impart to them a heart for good work ethics," Lindberg said. "Lastly, it benefits ORU by showing high school seniors who want to make education their major, that ORU College of Education is involved in a positive way with our students and local community projects."

ORU Engineering team prepares for missions trip to Ghana By Sara Rozalina Krstevski ('12)
Whole Person Scholarship Chancellor Roberts Facts about ORU Chapel Service
The Oral Roberts University chapter of Engineers with a Mission is partnering with ORU Missions and Outreach for a 2012 summer trip to Ghana. Dan Holman, a mechanical engineering student and the team leader, is excited to practice his gifts while doing missions in Ghana. "I think it's a perfect combination. We are able to be good stewards of the gift that God gave us because a lot of times people just speak and preach to people and then leave the locals," Holman said. "The locals commit their lives to Christ, but there is no discipling afterwards. Instead of a one-time thing, we want to impact them long-term. The people ask why we do this for them. This opens the door for us to tell them that we are here to serve God, and their hearts are open to evangelism." The engineering team will be developing and implementing renewable energy with a health clinic in Tamale to provide a sustainable, efficient, low-maintenance and cost-effective power supply to a much-needed local health clinic. "The plan is to build a health clinic for a woman's vocational school. We help provide services to the locals there and help train the women," Holman said. "We are going to be using solar panels as a renewable energy source. The whole goal is to integrate the physical and spiritual needs of the people." Robert Leland, ORU engineering and physics professor, believes that this will benefit all parties involved. "The students benefit in a lot of different ways. From an engineering standpoint, they have to provide an engineering solution in a developed country in different circumstances then they are used to," Leland said. "The students are also learning to use their skills to bless people. It's also a very good cross-cultural experience for them especially as Christians." Holman is thrilled that the students will be dealing with local professional engineers on how to implement the engineering process and learning to take their field beyond the classroom. "This really builds up the accreditation of the engineering program here at ORU," he said. "We are able to say that we went to different parts of the world to work with local professional engineers. By having influence worldwide, we are raising up true leaders." To read more about the missions team, check out their blog at http://oruteamghana.wordpress.com/
