Futuristic is a trend that explores the impact that technology will have on our lives as the different ways that man and machine will continue to fusion. Innovations in textiles, the creation of new materials and creative color palettes will impact design. With the increasing use of social networks and their influence on our lives we can’t ignore the fact that many of these projects are being financed and exploited by various social networking or search engine companies. In an increasingly interconnected world, social networks have played a key role in changing tastes and disseminating trends. Social presence is becoming a construct of our personal identities. FUTURISTIC When you think about the future, how do you envision it?

The consumer of today is living in a past-present future where surreal technology, like Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence, exist within a world where the past is still important and prevalent. Futuristic is further supported by the rise of 3D-printed clothing, footwear, and accessories that are being influenced by tech-driven design and a new generation of technical materials that are ultra light, highly breathable, protective, and thermo regulated. As gender roles become more flexible, terms like “gender-neutral” or genderless masculinity get more predominant with a generation of forward-looking persons emerging. These are audacious people who call themselves “without gender”, challenging preconceived ideas of gender, race, ethnicity and sexuality. Metallic textures undoubtedly make a statement but futuristic fashion is also defined by other aspects like embossed textures, bespoke fabrics and liquid or metallic finishes. Futuristic is also slowly influencing our lifestyle as much as services are upscaling, introducing premium and luxury options. Jobs are being displaced by technology, most of the times with the use of robots or drones. As robotics expand into a wider range of consumer-facing industries, the objective will be to develop technologies with humanizing details to replicate the textures, expressions and warmth of a human. The now world-famous robot Sophia is a perfect example of this. Anti-aging mechanisms and the perfection of the human body is also a near goal with Google’s associated company, Verily, being on a quest to find the cure to live forever. The world is changing at an extraordinary rate and the question is to know how humans are going to evolve with it.

Droughts and floods will continue to cause havoc with food crops affecting millions of people in the years to come. With such pressuring social problems it’s increasing a common social conscience with people feeling connected with one another and raising the need to go back to the roots and live a more sustainable life. The appreciation of flawed art, buildings, products, experiences and people will have and impact in our lives. Our tastes in beauty standards are evolving from a perfect to an imperfect aesthetic. The desire for flawless skin will be replaced by the desire to look cutely unique. Makeup will be used to mimic the appearance of natural beauty, such as highlighting blemishes and freckles. Human Nature is also about handmade crafts, the farm-to-fabric movement, biotextiles and the maker’s movement. It blurs the boundaries of the natural and the synthetic. It examines the moments where our organic world collides with the digital realm.

There’s a modern eco feel in Human Nature fabrics with the use of plastic made from wool and leather-like fabric made from pineapple leaves. Fabrics reflect layers of life, and come from algae, mushrooms or are animal inspired like peacock feathers. Warm sandy tones and cool stone colors are drawn straight from nature. There are plush materials, furry fabrics, slouchy shapes, marble and corkwood.

We live in a visually stimulated era. Never before has screen-based media dominated so much of our lives. In the home, this digital overload is inspiring a trend for “raw” materials. Raw in this context describes materials that are irregular and rough, handworked and weathered, rather than highly finished. It is an aesthetic designed to engage the senses beyond the visual: textured stone demands to be touched, raw wood has a soft lingering scent and patinated brass has a warmth that comes from age. By combining them with building products you can achieve more warm interiors that still maintain this raw aesthetics, but without appearing nude or uncomfortable.

INTUITION In a world where social media and instant gratification are becoming a norm, people are getting more and more stressed and anxiety is the most prominent disease of the century. Our need to disconnect, feel human emotions, and engage in activities that increase our sense of self-confidence and improve self-growth will only increase in the future. Mind management and meditation exercises are becoming common therapies to help counter a constant flow of information. From unstable politics to terrorism and climate change threats, people are seeking ways to train their minds and emotions, whether with meditation apps or breath work guides. Beauty-care routines are being blended with rituals and items of religious or spiritual importance, such as holy water toner, soap infused with-ritual flower or incense charcoal scrub. In this way, holistic and meditative experiences become part of the daily routine. At the same time people are rejecting organized religion and incorporating alternative beliefs. The pursuit of a clean lifestyle — free from additives, toxic ingredients, excess sugar or anything deemed “bad” — will spur the creation of more premium products and foods, such as clean meat, pollution-free makeup and organic labeled food. Products, spaces and experiences will be tailored with focus on the physical or mental wellbeing and health. Key influences are sensory textiles, experiential spaces, a focus on mindful living and inclusion design that makes us connect to one another.
