D E A R S A R A S O T A B A L L E T F A M I L Y,
On behalf of everyone at The Sarasota Ballet, thank you! As we look back on the challenges of last Season, we also look back on the love, encouragement, inspiration, and support that we received from our Sarasota Ballet community. During the 2020-2021 Season, The Sarasota Ballet produced 7 critically acclaimed Digital Programs for an audience of 4,154 ballet enthusiasts from 30 countries on six continents around the world, including 47 states across the US. In April of 2021, The New York Times included Digital Program 6 as one of their “5 Things To Do This Weekend”. In the spring of 2021, The Sarasota Ballet produced 3 Outdoor Programs featuring the Company, Studio Company, and Conservatory students. Outdoor Program 2, Voices of Her, launched a three-year project showcasing female choreographers. This program featured new pieces created during the pandemic by 3 members of the Company and 3 members of the Studio Company. Education programs engaged over 500 students from across the United States, while offering over 5,000 online and in-person classes through the year. This included classes for children, adults, pre-professional students, and people living with Parkinson’s. Dance – the Next Generation, Joyful Movement Through Parkinson’s, Silver Swans®, and Community Performances all took on a new shape but continued to operate throughout the pandemic. As we look to the future, we can see it is bright! Over the past year, with your help, we established The Sarasota Ballet Endowment Fund and the Advisory Council. We also expanded the Frank and Katherine Martucci Legacy Society and received two inspiring legacy gifts of $1M. With your support we were able to raise important funding to help our entire organization through the COVID-19 pandemic. We shared our art form with children, families, and ballet patrons in Sarasota and around the world. Thank you for supporting the work that we did to take care of our dancers, staff, students, patrons, and audience members throughout this extraordinary moment in history. We look forward to sharing an exciting upcoming season with you. Thank you for keeping our Company alive and thriving over the past year.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2020-2021 DIGITAL PROGRAM 1 Our 30 Anniversary Digital Season launched with a collection of works choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton. The Program comprised of excerpts from Ashton’s Les Patineurs, a whimsical skating party set on a simulated lake; Monotones II, set to compositions by Erik Satie with an ethereal pas de trois; Méditation from Thaïs, a stunning piece crafted on Dame Antoinette Sibley and Sir Anthony Dowell; La Chatte métamorphosée en femme, created on Merle Park; The Sleeping Beauty Vision Solo, for Dame Beryl Grey; the balcony pas de deux from Romeo & Juliet; and finally, the Foxtrot, Valse, and Tango-Pasodoble from Ashton’s comedic Façade. th

DIGITAL PROGRAM 2 Digital Program 2 paid tribute to the father of American Ballet - George Balanchine. The Program’s opening saw excerpts from Donizetti Variations, including the ballet’s core pas de deux and the so-called ‘grape dance’. Balanchine’s fast-paced Tarantella came next, followed swiftly by the Second Movement of Balanchine’s Western Symphony. Continuing the program saw the first three themes from the The Four Temperaments, hopefully hinting at the ballet’s return to The Sarasota Ballet repertoire. Digital Program 2 finished with extracts from Who Cares?, Balanchine’s iconic work celebrating New York City and the music of George Gershwin.

DIGITAL PROGRAM 3 Our third Digital Program focused on the Company’s breadth of repertoire. The program opened with the pas de quatre from Sir Peter Wright’s radiant Summertide, followed by Dominic Walsh’s enthralling Clair de Lune solo, then Wright’s elegant The Mirror Walkers pas de deux. Acting as the centerpiece of the Program, Peter Darrell’s Othello brought Shakespeare’s iconic narrative to the stage in a condensed, one-act ballet. The program was brought to a close with the pas de deux from Christopher Wheeldon’s uplifting The American, Sir Matthew Bourne’s hilarious Merman Solo from The Infernal Galop, and finally Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s stunning and iconic Concerto pas de deux.

DIGITAL PROGRAM 4 Pivoting from the excerpt-centric structure of the first half of our Season, Digital Program 4 kicked off the Winter-Spring Digital Season with two complete works choreographed by modern icon Paul Taylor. Brandenburgs opened the program, emphasizing the momentum of the score and drawing focus to the purity of dance. The Sarasota Ballet remains the only professional ballet company, other than the Paul Taylor Dance Company itself, to perform Brandenburgs. In contrast, Taylor’s Company B juxtaposed the youthful exuberance of young lovers cavorting to the popular tunes of The Andrews Sisters within the grim reality of war.

DIGITAL PROGRAM 5 The next Digital Program, our fifth, expanded on Digital Program 2 with the performance of George Balanchine’s Donizetti Variations in its entirety, paired with Resident Choreographer Ricardo Graziano’s crimson-hued creation, Amorosa. Opening with Donizetti Variations, a corps of nine dancers—six women and three men—took the stage with agile footwork reminiscent of the classical patterns formulated by Danish ballet master August Bournonville. Graziano’s Amorosa, meanwhile, was created around the sentiments evoked by the color red, set to exceprts of Antonio Vivaldi’s Cello Concertos. The program also marked the ballet’s first performance since its World Premiere.

DIGITAL PROGRAM 6 Digital Program 6 brought three full Ashton works to audiences at home – Valses nobles et sentimentales, The Walk to the Paradise Garden, and Façade. Valses was long considered one of Ashton’s lost ballets; after a 1987 revival, the ballet went unseen for twenty-five years until its 2012 American premiere by The Sarasota Ballet. Next, The Walk to the Paradise Garden loosely adapted the doomed love of Romeo and Juliet into a magnificent pas de deux, ending with an inevitable encounter with Death. The Program closed with a full performance of Ashton’s Façade, one of his earliest choreographed ballets and a prototypical display of his musicality and wit.

DIGITAL PROGRAM 7 Digital Program 7 brought a festive finale to our 30th Anniversary Season with Sir Frederick Ashton’s Birthday Offering and Twyla Tharp’s Nine Sinatra Songs. Originally crafted for The Royal Ballet’s 25th Anniversary in 1956, and choreographed on the company’s seven leading ballerinas, Birthday Offering creates a rich, sumptuous aesthetic through a series of complex and virtuoso solos, duets, and ensemble dances. Meanwhile, Tharp’s Nine Sinatra Songs pays respect to the oeuvre of Ol’ Blue Eyes, his songs’ deep ties to a distinctly American approach to romance shining through Tharp’s iconic choreography. A perfect end to a remarkable 30th Anniversary Season.

VOICES OF
HER The Sarasota Ballet has long maintained a dedication to the preservation of ballet history. Frequently overlooked—but critically significant—component of 20th century ballet is the impact women have made on sculpting the world of dance as it exists today, both through leadership and choreographic output. During the 2019 - 2020 Season, The Sarasota Ballet began plans for a multiyear initiative, titled Voices of Her, to highlight female choreographers of the past, present, and future. Voices of Her launched during our 2020 - 2021 Season.
TERRACE PROGRAM 2 - VOICES OF HER
Exurgency
In the Spring of 2021, as a part of The Sarasota Ballet’s Terrace Program Series, Voices of Her brought six world premieres to the stage in front of live audiences. Comprised entirely of ballets choreographed by female dancers of The Sarasota Ballet and The Sarasota Ballet Studio Company, six talented artists shared their choreographic voices with sold-out audiences on the Terrace Stage at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts. The works premiered were Lilian Schwendener’s Scottish Fantasy, Macyn Vogt’s Exurgency, Terri Jean Thomson’s Palladio, Asia Bui’s Song on the Beach, Katelyn Cudiamat’s Luwalhati, and Emelia Perkins’ Washington Square. “Even as they are just beginning their careers, a group of six young dancers are getting a chance to explore a different aspect of their creativity in The Sarasota Ballet’s second outdoor program ‘Voices of Her’. “ Jay Handelman | Sarasota Herald Tribune Scottish Fantasy

OUTDOOR PERFORMANCE SERIES Kicking off The Sarasota Ballet’s first in-person performances of the 2020 - 2021 Season, students of The Margaret Barbieri Conservatory and members of The Sarasota Ballet Studio Company opened Terrace Program 1 to sold-out audiences on March 5th. The Program featured excerpts of classical works, new choreography, and Ricardo Graziano’s Feira de Castro. Students returned to the outdoor Terrace Stage for both Terrace Program 2 - Voices of Her and Terrace Program 3 - Images of Dance, performing for hundreds of audience members at night under the stunning Sarasota sky.
YOUTH AMERICA GRAND PRIX The Margaret Barbieri Conservatory continued its relationship with the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) as one of its elite partner-schools. In addition, students of the Conservatory earned high honors at the YAGP Tampa SemiFinals, with siblings Noah and Savannah Campbell scoring First and Second place in their respective divisions, and Hailey Stinchcomb scoring a Third place win. In the following Finals, Noah Campbell and Hailey Stinchcomb competed, with Campbell placing 2nd and Stinchcomb scoring in the top 12. As a result of his Finals performance, Noah Campbell was awarded a full scholarship to The Royal Ballet School in London, where he will be attending next year.
2020 SUMMER INTERNATIONAL INTENSIVE The Sarasota Ballet Summer Intensive is a fully immersive, multi-week ballet training program that provides dance students an extraordinary environment to train and rehearse alongside leading dance educators from The Sarasota Ballet’s artistic and education staff. In 2020, we modified our Summer Intensive format to maximize safety with respect to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Our Summer Intensive offered socially distanced in-person and virtual programs for 60 students, culminating in a performance on stage at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts— for some the only chance they had to perform during 2020.

important resources for The Sarasota Ballet, while their community of members form close bonds through a mutual love of ballet.
VIRTUAL EVENTS MEET ME AT THE BARRE November 1st The Friends of The Sarasota Ballet’s annual event, Meet Me at the Barre went virtual for the 2020-2021 Season. Although Friends gathered on Zoom instead of the usual Mertz Theatre setting, the virtual edition of Meet Me at the Barre still marked a celebratory beginning to The Sarasota Ballet’s 30th Anniversary Season. The event provided an inside look at the history of The Sarasota Ballet and featured special guests including Founder, Jean Weidner Goldstein and former Director, Robert de Warren. UPDATE WITH IAIN WEBB December 4th The Friends had an opportunity to attend an intimate chat with Director Iain Webb during this exclusive Virtual Event. Iain spoke in-depth about the Ballet’s 30th Anniversary Season, covering everything from rehearsals and digital performances to plans for the future. Friends had the opportunity for a brief Q&A with Iain at the end of the call. EXCLUSIVE LIVE STREAM January 29th The Friends received a virtual invitation to Studio 1 for an inside look at the rehearsal process for Resident Choreographer, Ricardo Graziano’s, original piece Amorosa. During this Livestream Zoom Event, the Friends observed Graziano’s rehearsal and coaching practices while watching the dancers rehearse in real time.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Members can become directly involved with ongoing events throughout the season. Whether it be lending computer expertise, becoming a guide for backstage tours, mentoring our Dance – The Next Generation students, or simply sharing a love and enthusiasm with the rest of the community, there are so many ways that Friends of The Sarasota Ballet are part of The Sarasota Ballet family. “The Friends are grateful that The Sarasota Ballet was able to continue to provide exquisite performances during the 20202021 Season. This year was different in many ways, but it was also inspiring to see the true meaning of friendship on display.” Pat Golemme | President, Friends of The Sarasota Ballet
