DEAR SARASOTA BALLET FAMILY, It is with immense gratitude and pride that we reflect on the remarkable achievements and growth that The Sarasota Ballet has experienced over the last year. The 2022 - 2023 Season truly took our Company to new heights and we simply could not have done it without your continued love and support. The 2022 - 2023 Season began early with an incredible one-week residency at the Joyce Theater in New York City in August 2022. This comeback to the Joyce delighted audiences and gave our dancers the unique opportunity to perform on one of New York’s prestigious stages. The program featured two beloved Ashton ballets and the world premiere of Shades of Spring by renowned choreographer Jessica Lang. Seven unique programs spanning from ballet classics to world premieres made up our 2022 - 2023 Season. Our Company performed in three different venues, welcoming over 18,000 audience members throughout the Season. Demonstrating our commitment to innovation and pushing boundaries, we premiered five new pieces during the 2022 - 2023 Season. These included works by Ricardo Graziano, Richard House, and rising choreographer, Gemma Bond. March 2023 saw the Company debut of Bournonville’s full-length ballet, La Sylphide. This production, a true piece of ballet history, dazzled audiences with its stunning sets, costumes, and special effects. Other highlights of the Season included three Company premieres by Ashton, MacMillan, and Robbins; the presentation of Dance Theatre of Harlem; and the final program of the Season dedicated to the brilliant works of George Balanchine. In addition to our Company programs, our Education and Community programs also boasted great accomplishments over the last year. The Sarasota Ballet School debuted its very first production of The Nutcracker in December 2022. Performances were held in Venice and Sarasota and featured over 100 participants, ages 4-72. The Margaret Barbieri Conservatory was pleased to announce 10 graduates from the program who will go on to dance in Companies across the nation including The Sarasota Ballet Studio Company, Philadelphia Ballet II, Richmond Ballet, Nevada Ballet Theatre II, and Boston Ballet’s postgraduate program. And finally, our Community Engagement Platform, Dance For All, engaged over 2,000 participants in the art of dance. As we look towards the future, we know it is bright. Thank you for playing a principal role in supporting our performance, education, and community programs over the past year. We look forward to seeing you soon for the start of our 2023 - 2024 Season.

JOYCE THEATER NEW YORK CITY | AUGUST 16 - 21, 2022 Invited back in 2022 for the third time to the Joyce Theater, The Sarasota Ballet offered seven performances from August 16 - 21 much to the delight of New York audiences. This tour was made possible thanks to special support from the Jean Allenby Goldstein Touring Fund, Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation, and the Philip & Janice Levin Foundation, William Farber, Trustee. Kicking off the program was Ashton’s Birthday Offering, which exquisitely showcased the female dancers with two complete casts executing the choreography and introduced new Principal Dancers, Macarena Gimenez and Maximiliano Iglesias, in their debut performance with The Sarasota Ballet. Next was the World Premiere of Jessica Lang’s Shades of Spring, which was choreographed in the five-weeks leading up to the performance over the summer and featured costumes by Jillian Lewis and visual and digital designs by Roxanne Revon in collaboration with Jessica Lang. Closing the program. Varii Capricci returned to New York for its first performance since it premiered by The Royal Ballet at the Metropolitan Opera in 1983 with its classical elegance and characteristic Asthon style.

PROGRAM 1 - PREMIERES Program One opened the Season with a triple bill of world premieres. The Pilgrimage by Resident Choreographer Ricardo Graziano, tells a loose story of three nomadic couples facing the difficulties and pleasantries they encounter traveling a bleak landscape in search of their destination. Living Ghosts by Junior Principal Dancer Richard House, marked his first ballet choreographed on the Company with striking movement set against a modern score by Ludovico Einaudi. To close was Gemma Bond’s boundless and invigorating Excursions, featuring designs by Lauren Starobin, the ballet draws from classical variations molded with real world gestures and athleticism.
PROGRAM 2 - EXPRESSIONS Program Two opened with the Company Premiere of Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s first Danses Concertantes, a rare example of MacMillan’s lighter and more abstract works showcasing Igor Stravinsky’s witty score. Contrasting with the more whimsical opening, Ashton’s Dante Sonata finally premiered, three years after being postponed due to the pandemic. A tale of conflict and war inspired by Franz Liszt’s score and Dante’s epic poem of the afterlife, audiences throughout the weekend were enthralled by the ballet and how the echoes of World War II seeped into the fears of today’s society. Closing saw the return of Ashton’s Rhapsody, a dazzling and electrifying work which showcased the virtuosity of its leading couple, Macarena Gimenez and Yuki Nonaka.

PROGRAM 3 - AT NIGHT

Jerome Robbins’ In The Night celebrated its Company Premiere in December’s Program Three. Pianist Cameron Grant once again treated audiences to his exquisite solo musical mastery – enhancing the work’s already breathtaking beauty. Under the baton of American Ballet Theater’s Music Director Ormsby Wilkins, the live music set the perfect atmosphere for the next two ballets. A cornerstone of The Sarasota Ballet’s iconic repertoire, Ashton’s Les Patineurs brought down the house with its elegant, witty, and intricate choreography. As always, Jerome Robbins, Fancy Free had the audience leaving the theater laughing.

Program Four brought the long-awaited Sarasota Premiere of Jessica Lang’s Shades of Spring, providing a chance for local audiences to experience what New York audiences had raved about from the August tour at the Joyce. Next in the lineup was Arcadian Broad’s Frequency Hurtz, which featured a commissioned score by Jeremy Studinski and expertly combined music and sound samples to explore the impact of sound frequency on people and human emotions. Another beloved Ashton and Sarasota favorite, Façade closed the January program with wit, humor, and typical English cheeky attitude, confirming its reputation as an enduringly popular success and a definitively modern work of art.

PROGRAM 5 - DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM As the Guest Company for the 2022 – 2023 Season, Dance Theatre of Harlem continued to elevate the standards of dance in Sarasota with their exciting blend of musicality and flexibility .This was the final Season for Virginia Johnson as Artistic Director for Dance Theatre of Harlem, so it was a fitting and beautiful way to pay tribute to her tenure with this iconic dance institution. The Sarasota Ballet also presented a community engagement performance to expand the art form’s reach and open dance to a broader audience. We were honored to fill the theatre with 500 community members during that Monday matinee. Alexandra Hutchinson and Derek Brockington Photo by Rachel Neville
PROGRAM 6 - LA SYLPHIDE Program Six marked the Company premiere of the iconic August Bournonville full-length romantic ballet, La Sylphide. This production, choreographed by world-renowned Danish Choreographer, Johan Kobborg, is a true masterpiece and represents the physical embodiment of numerous ballet legacies all coming to life on stage. Portraying the lead female role of the Sylph, Macarena Gimenez and Danielle Brown both gave heartfelt and touching performances, each in their own unique styles. Luke Schaufuss and Maximiliano Iglesisas also artfully portrayed the lead male role of James, combining strength and depth of emotion into the role.

PROGRAM 7 - TRIBUTE TO BALANCHINE In honor of the iconic choreographer George Balanchine and marking the 40th anniversary of his passing, Program Seven featured a diverse trio of his ballets, accompanied by the Sarasota Orchestra. Opening with Divertimento No. 15, this classical work had audiences enthralled with its complexity, beauty and preciseness of choreography. Next, Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments abstractly expressed the “four humors” in a striking five-movement display of pure dance, artfully portrayed by the talented dancers. The program closed with the joyous return of Balanchine’s Western Symphony, a charming tribute to “spaghetti Westerns” and the cowboy escapades popularized through media in the 1950s, closing the Season with upbeat elation and toe tapping fun.
VOICES OF HER Voices of Her is a three-year project that celebrates the influence of women in dance throughout history. This important project aims to educate our audiences and shed light on the many female dancers, choreographers, and leaders who have helped shape the dance world. Featured to the right is Danielle Brown, who played an integral role in helping build the reputation of The Sarasota Ballet during her 16-year career with the Company. The 2022 – 2023 Season featured World Premiere works by two brilliant female Choreographers. Jessica Lang’s Shades of Spring opened at the Joyce Theatre in New York during the Summer of 2022 to rave reviews and was also featured in Program Four of the past Season for Sarasota audiences to enjoy. Gemma Bond’s Excursions was her first commissioned piece for The Sarasota Ballet.

Thank You Danielle Brown
Danielle Brown, Principal Dancer with the Company for more than a decade and a half, retired from The Sarasota Ballet at the end of the 2022 - 2023 Season. Her impact on The Sarasota Ballet is indelible and her beauty and elegance gracing the stage will be truly missed. Brown began her Company career with the 2007 – 2008 Season, hired as a corps de ballet dancer. In 2010 she was promoted to the rank of Principal. She would continue to flourish and dance roles spanning the Company’s vast repertoire, including ballets by Ashton, Balanchine, de Valois, MacMillan, Tharp, Wheeldon, and Wright, as well as roles created on her by Sir David Bintley, Will Tuckett and Resident Choreographer Ricardo Graziano. When asked about retiring, Danielle said, “I left home 20 years ago to pursue a professional career in ballet. I got my first job a year later and another job two years after that. But when I got my third job with The Sarasota Ballet, I was getting so much more than a job, I was getting a real career. I spent 16 years of my career with The Sarasota Ballet, and in that time, I saw not only my own dreams come true, but I had the honor of being a part of making Iain and Margaret’s dreams for the Company come true. Building with them what you see today was so much more fulfilling than just my own accomplishments. I am forever grateful for my time with The Sarasota Ballet and the lifelong memories I have with all my fellow dancers and friends from over the years. The chosen family I now have, the moments on stage that made me feel alive, the messages from audience members about how I touched them in some way, the younger dancers that I managed to help or inspire, the strength and personal growth I gained that I never knew I had, all have filled my cup so full that I could not ask for more. Saying goodbye to this chapter of my life is not easy, I would dance forever if I could, but I am saying goodbye with no regrets, knowing I left it all on the dance floor, and I gave it everything I had.”

THE MARGARET BARBIERI CONSERVATORY IMAGES OF DANCE 2023 The annual celebration of dance and music took place on May 2nd. This year, we collaborated with three local music organizations – Key Chorale, Sarasota Youth Opera and Sarasota Music Conservatory who provided beautiful live music. Featuring The Sarasota Ballet Studio Company and The Margaret Barbieri Conservatory, this year’s repertoire included the Grand Pas from Paquita, a pas de deux by Company guest choreographer Gemma Bond, and new works by Company dancer Luis Gonzalez and fulltime faculty members Risa Kaplowitz and Addul Manzano.
COMPETITION SUCCESS Our Conservatory students are given the option to prepare for competitions including Youth America Grand Prix. We see competitions as a performance opportunity and the chance for students to grow and develop as young artists by focusing on specific variations. This year, 14 students attended the YAGP semifinals in Tampa, with 4 being selected to attend the finals. Macie Miersch and Jason Shuman were top 12 in pas de deux and Macie Miersch and Taylor-Tatiana Andre were top 12 in small ensemble. As we are fortunate to be a YAGP partner school, Christopher Hird and Dierdre Miles Burger also judged the semi-finals, and this helps us find talented students to invite to the Conservatory. In addition, Jason Shuman was selected from over 350 applicants as one of only 115 world-wide competitors to compete at the Jackson International Ballet Competition in Mississippi.
SUMMER INTENSIVE The Sarasota Ballet Summer Intensive has grown each year and in 2022 we welcomed 170 students from 32 different US states. We auditioned nearly 2,000 students through our own virtual and in-person auditions. In addition, we are very proud to be part of a collective of 14 other professional schools in the National Summer Intensive Auditions. The culmination of the Intensive are the InMotion performances at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts. The 2022 program included excerpts from Coppelia, Le Corsaire and Swan Lake.

THE SARASOTA BALLET SCHOOL The Sarasota Ballet School had another successful year, offering students from age three to adults a safe environment to learn and discover the joy of dance. We are proud to be the only school in Sarasota to offer the American Ballet Theatre® National Training Curriculum, and this year we also held two curriculum nights to explain the curriculum to parents. CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS Our end of year performance celebrated all our Education programs, with students from The Sarasota Ballet School, The Margaret Barbieri Conservatory, and Dance – The Next Generation joining together. Students enjoyed portraying flamingos, tortoises and butterflies as they demonstrated for their families what they had learned during the year. Two of our school students also wrote and presented the narration that carried the audience through the story.
16
ADULT PROGRAM In addition to our programs for children, we are pleased to offer a robust adult program. Our students are exceptionally devoted to our classes with many of them dancing up to four days a week! This year we were able to relaunch our Weekend Workshops, with adult dancers coming from around the country to do a mini-intensive which included tickets to see The Sarasota Ballet Company perform.
The highlight of the year was our new production of The Nutcracker. With beautiful sets and costumes by designer Peter Farmer, the performances showcased 134 performers ages 4-72 from The Sarasota Ballet School, The Margaret Barbieri Conservatory, Dance – The Next Generation and The Sarasota Ballet Studio Company. Initially we had planned for just one performance at the Sarasota Opera House, but we were thrilled when the Venice Symphony Orchestra approached us to add two performances at the Venice Performing Arts Center. It was an incredible experience for our students to have live music, which added an additional layer to the production. Directed by Risa Kaplowitz, this new production of The Nutcracker was a huge success, with the Sarasota performance selling out. The students were joined by Company dancers Thomas Leprehon and Juliano Weber who assumed the roles of Drosselmeyer and the Sugar Plum Fairy’s Cavalier. As patrons walked into the theatre, they were transported into the world of The Nutcracker at our special boutique. Conceived and created by parents Robert and Adam Rodenberger, the boutique sold ornaments, gifts, and many different and diverse wooden Nutcrackers. The Nutcracker was an incredible achievement for everyone. We look forward to it becoming an annual tradition in both Sarasota and Venice.
