IAIN WEBB
Director
It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to The Sarasota Ballet’s opening program – New World. Not only do these performances mark our return to the theater after almost two years, but also the start of my 15th Season as Director. New World expresses so much of how we as a Company feel about our return to the theater. You have the hope for a new future that comes from the pioneer era so perfectly brought to life by the legendary Martha Graham, and you have the excitement that comes from a World Premiere through Ricardo Graziano’s Sonatina. We are truly thrilled to have you here with us for these two ballets. On a personal note, I want to say how honored and humbled I am to continue to lead this incredible Company of ours. These past many Seasons seem to have flown by, and I want to take a moment to recognize all the incredible things we have accomplished together, from The Sarasota Ballet’s growth into an internationally recognized Company, through to our critically acclaimed national tours, and the hundreds of incredible ballets that have graced Sarasota stages. I want to thank you all for the support you have given myself and this Company, and of course my sincerest thanks to every dancer, patron, board member, and staff member that has worked alongside me during the past 14 years. There are so many incredible people that have impacted my time thus far, but I do want to pay special thanks to Jean Weidner Goldstein, our Founder; Joseph Volpe, our Executive Director; and Margaret Barbieri, our Assistant Director. Jean has been an incredible support since my first day here in Sarasota, Joe has been truly revolutionary since he joined over 5 years ago, and of course Margaret whose artistry and passion inspire everyone around her. Here is to a remarkable Season together, and to many more to come!

Martha Graham's
Appalachian Spring Ballet Synopsis
As one of the innovators of dance in America, Martha Graham is an American modern dance icon. Her exceptional accomplishments include being the first dancer to perform at the White House, as well as the first dancer to receive the highest civilian honor—The Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction. For Appalachian Spring, two true American artists collaborated to create this beloved work—Martha Graham as choreographer and Aaron Copland as composer. As Meridee Duddleston wrote, the piece tells an “American story of courage, community and innovation, portrayed through the aspirations of a newly married couple settling in Pennsylvania.”
Peggy Lyman Hayes Repetiteur
Peggy Lyman Hayes has been affiliated with the Martha Graham Center as a Principal Dancer, Company Rehearsal Director, Director of Graham II, School Senior Faculty, and Regisseur for the Martha Graham Resources since 1973. Additional directing posts include Artistic Director of Peggy Lyman Dances, Hartford Ballet, and Dance CT. She was a founder in 1994, of the University of Hartford’s Hartt School Dance Division, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Hartford in 2016, and was honored in 2018 at the 25th anniversary of the CT Women’s Hall of Fame.

Ricardo Graziano's
Sonatina
Ballet Synopsis When Ricardo Graziano was commissioned by Director Iain Webb with choreographing a ballet to open the 2021 - 2022 Season—Webb’s 15th Anniversary Season—Graziano had intended for his ninth complete work to expand upon a project he had partially created during pandemic lockdown the previous Season. Webb, however, felt that the Company needed to have something classical and entirely new for this first program of the Season. This way, the work could include a larger cast so that the Company could return in full force to the stage and welcome Sarasota audiences home to the theater once again. “After so many years creating ballets for the Company, most of them contemporary works,” explained Graziano, “it felt suitable to create something distinctly Ashtonian in tone and style. The more of Sir Frederick Ashton’s repertoire I danced, the more frequently I would incorporate some of his signature elements into my own contemporary ballets, like his emphasis on the use of the upper body. With Sonatina, though, this influence is more noticeable – I wanted to create a plotless ballet that both demonstrates the heart of The Sarasota Ballet and would just be fun for our Company to dance, and our audiences to watch.”
