WELCOME TO THE 2023 - 2024 SEASON Welcome to The Sarasota Ballet's 2023 - 2024 Season! Thank you for joining us for a Season full of enriching lives, captivating emotions and strengthening the community through the art of dance.
DIRECTOR
IAIN WEBB
It is my privilege to extend my warmest greetings to you as we enter another extraordinary new Season. All of us, from myself, Margaret, and Joe through to our remarkable dancers and staff are thrilled to unveil a lineup that will transport you to new realms of artistic excellence. This Season promises to be a journey of discovery, innovation, and homage to the timeless artform of ballet. At the heart of our opening program – Progression In Rep, you will witness the World Premiere of an invigorating blend of athleticism and artistry by choreographer Gemma Bond. Alongside her work with The Sarasota Ballet, this Season will see Gemma working with balletic giants like American Ballet Theatre and The Royal Ballet – so it is particularly exciting that you will be the first audiences this Season to experience her creative vision. Opening the program is Sir Frederick Ashton's Varii Capricci, a ballet that enraptured audiences in New York last year and will form the centerpiece of our Gala Performance during our International Tour to London in June of 2024 where we will perform at The Royal Opera House for a week-long celebration of Ashton. Program 1 – Progression In Rep culminates with Johan Kobborg's homage to choreographer August Bournonville, Salute. The ballet showcases Kobborg’s wit and humor alongside his remarkable knowledge and grounding in the Bournonville traditions and technique. This piece is a testament to Kobborg's choreographic prowess, and we are delighted for it to return to the Sarasota stage. As we prepare to embark on this remarkable journey together, I extend my deepest gratitude for your continued support. It is your presence and unwavering enthusiasm that fuel our artistic endeavors. We eagerly await the joy of sharing these moments of dance, emotion, and sheer artistry with you through the Season. With immense excitement and gratitude,

Varii Capricci I
n 1983, as part of the Britain Salutes New York Festival at the Metropolitan Opera House, Sir Frederick Ashton created a new ballet. This work, meant to uplift his dear friend, composer Sir William Walton, featured lavish scenery by David Hockney, inspired by the tropical garden on Walton's Ischia island home. The original costumes, designed by Ossie Clark, exuded the era's stylish extravagance. The ballet, titled Varii Capricci, humorously subverted expectations of refined English classicism. It portrayed a strutting, sashaying gigolo, Lo Straniero, who romances La Capricciosa, the elegant hostess, at a poolside party. The heart of the ballet lay in the sensuous pas de deux, and notably, the performance featured Anthony Dowell as the gigolo and Antoinette Sibley as Capricciosa, embodying sexual frivolity. This work was both a self-parody and a respectful parody of The Royal Ballet's traditions, intriguing New York audiences. Varii Capricci had limited performances, but in 2019, The Sarasota Ballet, in collaboration with Grant Coyle and other talents, revived the ballet. They retained the essence of Hockney's scenery, updated the corps costumes, and commissioned a recording of Walton's revised fifth movement, breathing new life into this gem of dance history.
Sir Frederick Ashton CHOREOGRAPHER
Born in Ecuador in 1904, Sir Frederick Ashton's remarkable dance journey began in 1917 after witnessing Anna Pavlova perform. He later honed his skills in London under Léonide Massine and Dame Marie Rambert while briefly dancing with Ida Rubinstein's company (1928-1929). In 1935, Dame Ninette de Valois invited Ashton to join the Vic-Wells Ballet, which would ultimate become The Royal Ballet. His choreographic talent flourished, contributing to various genres, from revues and musicals to opera and film. During World War II, he served in the RAF before creating groundbreaking works like "Symphonic Variations" in 1946, revitalizing English ballet with classicism and modernity. Over the next two decades, Ashton's legacy expanded with iconic ballets for exceptional dancers, including Cinderella (1948), Romeo and Juliet (1955), and The Dream (1964). Appointed Associate Director of The Royal Ballet in 1952 and later its Director from 1963 to 1970, he oversaw the company's remarkable ascent. Knighted in 1962, Ashton's enduring contributions reflect versatility, lyrical sensibility, and historical reconstruction. Celebrated as the founder of the English classical ballet style, his legacy lives on through timeless ballets that continue to captivate audiences worldwide. Passing in 1988, Ashton left an indelible mark on the world of ballet.
Margret Barbieri REPETITEUR
Having spent 20 years as a Principal Dancer with The Royal Ballet, Margaret Barbieri’s wealth of knowledge and experience has enabled her to give back to the dance community through her years as a teacher and Repetiteur. During the last seven years Barbieri has staged productions for The Sarasota Ballet by some of the most important names in ballet, including Ashton, de Valois, Wright and Fokine. In addition to staging ballets for the Company, Barbieri is also Assistant Director. Her other staging credits include Iñaki Urlezaga Company (Argentina), K-Ballet (Japan), Oregon Ballet Theatre, Scottish Ballet, and Tbilisi Ballet Theatre.
Panoramic Score World Premiere I
n Gemma Bond's second choreographic creation for The Sarasota Ballet, she presents a unique exploration of dance's architectural aspects, moving beyond human emotion to focus on the body's structure. Bond used Alberto Ginastera's music as her canvas, drawing inspiration from the Argentinian landscape, evoking rolling hills and itinerant gauchos through movement. Costumes by Lauren Starobin subtly reinforce these concepts, making the physical embodiment of unspoken histories beneath the surface a central theme. Bond's World Premiere showcases The Sarasota Ballet's athleticism while emphasizing that ballet is, at its core, an art form driven by proportion, rhythm, and shape. These elements, akin to those in satisfying architecture and visual art, form the foundation of her work. Bond lets the structure act as a conduit for beauty, inviting the audience to appreciate the inherent craftsmanship in her choreography. Dance critic and writer Marina Harss aptly describes Bond's work as "expansive, lyrical, handsomely coordinated, with a focus on the beauty of the body's line," bringing to life a dance piece that transcends the boundaries of human emotion.
Gemma Bond
CHOREOGRAPHER
Gemma Bond got her first taste of choreography at 13 when she competed in The Royal Ballet School’s Sir Kenneth MacMillan Choreographic Competition. From 2010 to the present, she has created works for American Ballet Theater and Studio Company, Atlanta Ballet, Ballet Nacional de Cuba, The Washington Ballet, New York Theater Ballet, Intermezzo Ballet Company, the Hartt School, Ballet Sun Valley, Kaatsbaan Summer Festival, and City Center’s Fall for Dance. Her choreography has been performed at the prestigious Erik Bruhn Competition, The Royal Opera House, The Joyce, Jacob’s Pillow, New York City Center, and the Metropolitan Opera House. In 2014 she was awarded the fellowship grant from the New York Choreographic Institute (an affiliate of New York City Ballet) and she has also received grants from the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. Ms. Bond is a 2017 - 2018 New York City Center Choreography Fellow, the recipient of a 2017 Princess Grace award, 2018 winner of the Clive Barnes Foundation Award for her choreography, and a 2020 Bessie for outstanding breakout choreographer.
Salute T
he brutality of war doesn’t usually give us pause for pleasure, but Johan Kobborg’s Salute takes something of the gallantry and honor we associate with warfare in bygone times to create a good-humored ballet that is a lighthearted vehicle to display the dancers expressive abilities and comic timing. Set to the irresistible sway of Hans Christian Lumbye’s waltzes and polkas, links to the nineteenth century continue in how Kobborg uses his Danish heritage as a departure point for Salute, taking elements of Bournonville style and restating them anew for contemporary audiences. A loose story illustrates the relationship between soldiers and the women they leave behind before going off to war; danced vignettes imbued with the blithe innocence of youth feature a comically blustering general, and a recruit who isn’t exactly what they seem. Through the well-mannered comedy, Salute presents people coming together in the face of uncertain times ahead. Created in 2010 for North Carolina School of the Arts, Salute has entered the repertoire of the Royal Danish Ballet and Royal New Zealand Ballet.
Johan Kobborg CHOREOGRAPHER
Johan Kobborg, born in 1972 into an artistic family, is celebrated for his distinguished career as a dancer and choreographer. He began his ballet journey at the Royal Danish Ballet School and joined the corps de ballet of the Royal Danish Ballet at seventeen. In 1994, his role as James in Bournonville's La Sylphide led to his promotion to Principal. In 1999, Kobborg joined The Royal Ballet as Principal Dancer, performing an extensive repertoire, including works by Ashton and MacMillan. He also made guest appearances with leading dance companies worldwide. Notably, his partnership with Alina Cojocaru garnered international acclaim, both on and offstage. Kobborg embarked on choreography during his time with The Royal Ballet, creating acclaimed productions like La Sylphide in 2005 and Les Lutins in 2009. Following his departure in 2013, he became Artistic Director of the Romanian National Ballet in Bucharest for several years. He expanded his artistic horizons by working as the lead choreographer for the 2018 film The White Crow and premiered his production of Romeo & Juliet in 2019 at the Arena di Verona, Italy. Today, Johan Kobborg remains a prolific choreographer, sharing his expertise with ballet companies worldwide, leaving an indelible mark on the dance world.
