DIRECTOR
IAIN WEBB
Welcome to Conflicted Beauty, a program that transcends the stage, where dance becomes a profound exploration of the human experience. The three ballets you will witness—Edwaard Liang's The Art of War, Sir Frederick Ashton's Dante Sonata, and Paul Taylor's Company B—each delve into the themes of war and conflict. As we gather in the midst of troubling global conflicts, these works of art take on an even more tragic poignant relevance. They serve as stark reminders of the enduring fear, brutality, and uncertainty that persist in our world, but also in their mere act of existing, showcase humanity's ability to persevere. One of the most rewarding aspects of this program for me has been to watch our dancers learn and grow from three extraordinary artists that I have the utmost respect for—Edward Liang, Margaret Barbieri, and Michael Trusnovec. All three have been so generous in the studio with their vast knowledge, experience, and most importantly their artistry. I would like to, in particular, take this moment to thank and recognize Edwaard; he is a truly remarkable person, and we are beyond thrilled to finally have his work in our repertoire. Through the artistry of dance, we invite you to join us in reflecting on these universal challenges, seeking understanding, empathy, and connection. Thank you for being here, for embracing the power of storytelling, and for engaging with us in this shared journey of artistic exploration.

The Art of War Company Premiere C
horeographed to Michael Torke’s powerful composition “Ash”, Edwaard Liang’s The Art of War was inspired by Sun Tzu’s renowned book of the same name and the controlled chaos of calligraphy. An intentional piece about determination and strength, Peter Tonguette described the ballet in his review for The Columbus Dispatch as a work “With assertive partnering and forceful music by Michael Torke, Liang’s The Art of War was meant to call to mind calligraphy, with dancers sprinting across the stage with lengths of black silk — akin to ink filling a page.” During the work, dancers perform alongside large flowing fabrics of red and black, accentuating Liang’s calligraphic inspiration. Talking about the ballet, the choreographer has stated that “In calligraphy, there are different brushstrokes, so we asked the dancers to make those strokes from the elbow, transposing visual art into physical art.”
Edwaard Liang
CHOREOGRAPHER
Edwaard Liang, a former dancer with New York City Ballet and Nederlands Dans Theater, has gained international acclaim as a choreographer. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, and raised in California, Liang started dancing at Marin Ballet at age five. After joining New York City Ballet in 1993, he became a Soloist in 1998. Liang's career highlights include winning the Mae L. Wien Award and performing in the Tony Award® winning Broadway cast of Fosse, later televised on PBS. In 2002, he joined Nederlands Dans Theater 1, where his passion for choreography blossomed. Since transitioning to choreography, Liang's works have been featured globally, earning him awards such as the 2006 National Choreographic Competition. In 2013, he became Artistic Director at BalletMet, crafting new works for companies worldwide. His accomplishments include winning an Emmy® Award in 2017 for his dance film Vaulted and creating a ballet for the 2018 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, with Roberto Bolle.
Andres Esterez REPETITEUR
Andres Estevez, originating from Havana, Cuba, trained under Alicia Alonso at Ballet Nacional de Cuba before joining Ballet Clasico de la Havana, where he rose to principal dancer. Estevez would later move to the United States, dancing a hugely varied repertoire with Miami City Ballet in 1996, Orlando Ballet in 1998, and finally BalletMet in 2009 where he would remain until 2017. Retiring from the stage, Estevez took on leadership roles with the Company, becoming Associate Director of BalletMet 2 and the following year Company Rehearsal Director. Additionally, Estevez's extensive career includes staging Edwaard Liang's ballets globally.
Dante Sonata V
ictor Hugo's assertion that "When the poet paints hell, he paints his life" inspired Franz Liszt to create Après une lecture du Dante, a powerful piano work used in Frederick Ashton's ballet, Dante Sonata. Emerging in 1940 amidst the turmoil of World War II, the ballet portrays the struggle between the Children of Light and the Children of Darkness, inspired by Dante's Inferno. Ashton employed modern dance elements and barefoot dancers, with Sophie Fedorovitch's designs and Constant Lambert's orchestration enhancing the dark ambiance. The ballet, symbolically interpreting Liszt's reactions to Dante's poem, deliberately avoided a specific narrative, offering a free, symbolic reading of the music's moods. Initially a wartime staple, Dante Sonata fell out of favor post-1950 but resurfaced fifty years later through reconstruction efforts led by original cast members and Director David Bintley for the Birmingham Royal Ballet. The ballet, a visual rendition of the haunting themes within Dante's epic, continues to captivate audiences with its evocative exploration of good versus evil.
Sir Frederick Ashton CHOREOGRAPHER
Born in Ecuador in 1904, Sir Frederick Ashton's remarkable dance journey began in 1917 after witnessing Anna Pavlova perform. He later honed his skills in London under Léonide Massine and Dame Marie Rambert while briefly dancing with Ida Rubinstein's company (1928-1929). In 1935, Dame Ninette de Valois invited Ashton to join the Vic-Wells Ballet, which would ultimate become The Royal Ballet. His choreographic talent flourished, contributing to various genres, from revues and musicals to opera and film. During World War II, he served in the RAF before creating groundbreaking works like "Symphonic Variations" in 1946, revitalizing English ballet with classicism and modernity. Over the next two decades, Ashton's legacy expanded with iconic ballets for exceptional dancers, including Cinderella (1948), Romeo and Juliet (1955), and The Dream (1964). Appointed Associate Director of The Royal Ballet in 1952 and later its Director from 1963 to 1970, he oversaw the company's remarkable ascent. Knighted in 1962, Ashton's enduring contributions reflect versatility, lyrical sensibility, and historical reconstruction. Celebrated as the founder of the English classical ballet style, his legacy lives on through timeless ballets that continue to captivate audiences worldwide. Passing in 1988, Ashton left an indelible mark on the world of ballet.
Margaret Barbieri REPETITEUR
Having spent 20 years as a Principal Dancer with The Royal Ballet, Margaret Barbieri’s wealth of knowledge and experience has enabled her to give back to the dance community through her years as a teacher and Repetiteur. During the last seven years Barbieri has staged productions for The Sarasota Ballet by some of the most important names in ballet, including Ashton, de Valois, Wright and Fokine. In addition to staging ballets for the Company, Barbieri is also Assistant Director. Her other staging credits include Iñaki Urlezaga Company (Argentina), K-Ballet (Japan), Oregon Ballet Theatre, Scottish Ballet, and Tbilisi Ballet Theatre.
Company B J
ust as America began to emerge from the Depression at the dawn of the 1940s, the country was drawn into the Second World War. In a seminal piece of Americana, Paul Taylor recalls that turbulent era through the hit songs of the Andrews Sisters. Although the songs depict a nation surging with high spirits, millions of men were bidding farewell to wives or girlfriends and many would never return from battle. The dance focuses on such poignant dualities. Young lovers lindy, jitterbug, and polka, in a near manic grasp for happiness while in the background shadowy figures – soldiers – fall dead. Among the sections of the dance, the one choreographed to “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (of Company B)” is carefree until the moment the bugler is shot; the one set to “I Can Dream, Can’t I?” tells of a young lady’s affections for a soldier an ocean away who, for his part, reaches out to a comrade in arms. The dance ends just as it began, with “Bei Mir Bist du Schon” – but the world has clearly changed. “(Company B) evokes the exuberant rhythms of the 40’s as well as the grim and persistent shadow of war. But even more vividly, it honors Taylor’s magnificent dancers. Some of the most glorious dancing to be seen anywhere…” - Laura Shapiro, Newsweek
Paul Taylor
CHOREOGRAPHER
Paul Taylor, a pivotal figure in American modern dance, shaped the art form from 1954 until his passing in 2018. As the artistic director of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, he crafted 147 groundbreaking dances that are considered among the finest in the genre. In 2015, Taylor secured modern dance's future by establishing Paul Taylor American Modern Dance, showcasing classic and contemporary works at Lincoln Center. Born on July 29, 1930, Taylor's journey from a swimming scholarship at Syracuse University to discovering dance at Juilliard marked the beginning of his illustrious career. A trailblazer, he danced with Martha Graham while choreographing for his own company. In 1959, he was a guest artist with New York City Ballet, where Balanchine created the Episodes solo for him. Taylor received numerous accolades, including the Kennedy Center Honors, an Emmy for Speaking in Tongues, and the National Medal of Arts. His legacy extends beyond American modern dance, earning him France's Légion d’Honneur in 2000. Taylor's passing in 2018 left an extraordinary legacy of creativity and vision not only to American modern dance, but to the performing arts the world over.
Michael Trusnovec REPETITEUR
Michael Trusnovec, acclaimed by The New York Times as "one of the world’s most luminous dancers," is a Long Island native and a distinguished graduate of the Long Island High School for the Performing Arts. With a BFA in Dance Performance from Southern Methodist University, he spent over two decades as a principal dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company, creating numerous roles and premiering works by acclaimed choreographers. Trusnovec received the 2018 Dance Magazine Award, the 2016 "Positano Premia La Danza" Dancer of the Year, and a 2006 Bessie Award. Currently, he serves as Dance Co-Director at the renowned Metropolitan Opera as well as a repetiteur for Mr. Taylor’s dances.
