EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Joseph Volpe

It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the theater and to this enchanting program, Moments of Meaning, which is filled with beauty, power, and the timeless artistry of ballet. Program 3 promises to be a breathtaking showcase of two extraordinary ballets. We open with the renowned classical masterpiece Theme and Variations by the iconic George Balanchine, a choreographic gem that captures the essence of elegance and precision. Balanchine's ability to weave intricate patterns of movement is truly extraordinary, and I am confident that you will be captivated from the very first note to the final curtain call. Following Theme and Variations, we are privileged to present In the Upper Room by the visionary choreographer Twyla Tharp and renowned composer Philip Glass. Glass's music, a perfect marriage of rhythm and emotion, elevates Tharp's choreography to new heights, creating an experience that transcends the boundaries of dance and music. What makes this ballet particularly special for me is that I am honored to share a personal connection with Philip. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with him, and his contributions to the world of music continue to leave an indelible mark on the arts. Before we delve into this evening's artistic feast, I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for gracing us with your presence. Your unwavering support is the lifeblood of The Sarasota Ballet, and it is through your attendance, enthusiasm, and generosity that we continue to thrive and bring exceptional performances to our community. As we approach the end of the year, a season of giving and reflection, I encourage you to consider supporting The Sarasota Ballet. Your contributions make it possible for us to nurture and showcase the incredible talent that graces our stage, ensuring that the magic of ballet remains an integral part of our cultural tapestry. Once again thank you for joining us tonight, enjoy the performance and here's to many more moments of meaning in the years to come.

Theme and Variations I

n Theme and Variations, George Balanchine masterfully revisits the grand Russian Imperial Ballet tradition, infusing the ballet with opulence and classical elegance. Set to the final movement of Tchaikovsky's 1884 Suite No. 3 for Orchestra, the ballet unfolds with twelve variations on an initial theme, evoking the splendor of Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty. Balanchine's vision aimed to capture the pinnacle of classical dancing during the flourishing era of Russian ballet, guided by Tchaikovsky's timeless music. The choreography progresses through solos, duets, quartets, and ensemble dances, building towards the majestic grand pas de deux. The stage comes alive as twelve male dancers join their partners, creating intricate patterns that mirror the music's majestic sweep, culminating in a grand polonaise involving the entire cast of 26 dancers. The ballet transports the audience to the grandeur of an imperial court. Theme and Variations became part of New York City Ballet's repertory in 1960, later incorporated into Tchaikovsky Suite No. 3. However, The Sarasota Ballet now presents the original 1947 ballet independently, utilizing Peter Farmer's designs from The Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet. Balanchine's timeless creation continues to captivate audiences with its regal beauty and enduring homage to the golden age of Russian ballet.

George Balanchine CHOREOGRAPHER

Born Georgi Balanchivadze in St. Petersburg in 1904, George Balanchine emerged as a ballet colossus, leaving an indelible mark on American dance. His 60-year career saw him bring the grand Russian classical style into the modernist era, establishing the renowned New York City Ballet and contributing significantly to America's classical ballet tradition. After graduating from the Petrograd Imperial School of Ballet in 1921, Balanchine's early choreographies with the Mariinsky Ballet challenged tradition. Joining the Ballets Russes in 1924, he swiftly became Chief Choreographer, creating iconic works like "Apollo" and "Prodigal Son." Following Diaghilev's death in 1929, Balanchine worked in Europe before Lincoln Kirstein persuaded him to come to America. Together, they founded the American School of Ballet (1934), leading to the formation of The American Ballet, Ballet Society, and eventually the New York City Ballet (1948). Balanchine's ballets, marked by his musical expertise, showcased collaborations with Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and other musical luminaries. His neoclassical aesthetic bridged American modernism with Russian ballet tradition, leaving an enduring legacy as one of the world's greatest choreographers. Today, his rich repertoire continues to captivate audiences globally, affirming Balanchine's unparalleled influence on the world of dance.

Phillip Neal REPETITEUR

After 23 years with New York City Ballet, 17 as Principal Dancer, Philip Neal became a repetiteur for The George Balanchine Trust and The Jerome Robbins Rights Trust, staging their works globally. Neal has embarked on his own choreographic ventures, having crafted five original commissions for Richmond Ballet. From 2010-2013, Neal directed development, fundraising and special events for Miami City Ballet. In 2015, Neal was appointed the Artistic Director of Next Generation Ballet (NGB) & Dance Dean of the Patel Conservatory at the Straz Center in Tampa FL, one the largest performing arts centers in the United States. The pre-professional training division touts graduates in prestigious academies and companies such as The Royal Ballet School, School of American Ballet, Boston Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, and The Royal Danish Ballet.

In the Upper Room I

n The Upper Room, a groundbreaking collaboration between choreographer and composer captivated audiences and garnered critical acclaim for its intricate structure and expressive force. Dale Harris (Wall Street Journal, 1986) lauded the ballet for its ability to seize emotions through a complex and harmonious structure, highlighting its abstract nature that defies conventional description. In her autobiography, Twyla Tharp reveals the inspiration behind the ballet, with the stage framed by two women resembling "ferocious and brave porcelain dragon dogs." Dubbed "china dogs" during creation, these characters set the stage for a dynamic ensemble, including three couples in running shoes ("stompers") and two women en pointe ("the bomb squad"), gradually evolving into the "ballet cadre." Tharp envisioned her dancers as embodying fierce, relentless movements and breath-catching, swift unison moves, aiming to "burn the retina" with their intensity. The ballet's immense impact has led to its inclusion in the repertoires of over 20 international companies from 1992 to 2010. Its demand attests to the enduring quality and universal resonance of In The Upper Room, marking it as a timeless masterpiece in the world of dance.

Twyla Tharp

CHOREOGRAPHER

Twyla Tharp, born on July 1, 1941, in Portland, Indiana, is an iconic choreographer renowned for over 135 dances created for prestigious companies such as American Ballet Theatre, Paris Opera Ballet, and New York City Ballet. Her diverse contributions include choreography for five Hollywood films and direction/choreography for four Broadway shows. Recipient of a Tony, two Emmys, and the 2004 National Medal of the Arts, Tharp's accolades reflect her profound impact. She began her artistic journey in California, later graduating from Barnard College in 1963. Following training with Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham, she joined the Paul Taylor Dance Company before founding Twyla Tharp Dance in 1965. Key works in her repertoire include Deuce Coupe (Joffrey Ballet, 1973), credited as the first "crossover" ballet, and In The Upper Room (1986). Tharp's autobiography "Push Comes To Shove" (1992), along with her books The Creative Habit and The Collaborative Habit, offer insights into her creative process. As a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Tharp's influence extends beyond dance. With a son and a grandson, she continues to create, write, and lecture, leaving an enduring legacy in the world of performing arts.

Shelley Washington REPETITEUR

Shelley Washington, a dancer and choreographer, studied under Twyla Tharp at Wolftrap Academy and American University. She joined the Twyla Tharp Dance Company in 1975, having previously danced with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Graduating from Interlochen Arts Academy, she furthered her training at Juilliard. Notably, she performed in the film "Hair" (1977) and on Broadway in "Singing in the Rain" (1985), earning a Bessie Award in 1987. From 1988 to 1992, she was a Soloist and Rehearsal Director at American Ballet Theater. Ms. Washington, a Repetiteur, continues to collaborate with Twyla Tharp, directing ballets globally for prestigious dance companies. Additionally, she worked as a Movement Director and Choreographer for Trevor Nunn's Royal National Theater in 1999.
