Margaret Barbieri ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

I am thrilled to welcome you to Program 6 – Portraits of Expression that promises to entertain and move you with a diverse combination of dance styles. We begin with Emeralds, the opening ballet from George Balanchine’s unparalleled full length abstract ballet, Jewels. Classic and timeless, Emeralds exudes French elegance and style with music by Gabriel Fauré and lavish emerald-green costumes by Karinska.

The second ballet is Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Las Hermanas, which holds a special meaning for me, as I was fortunate to work with the legendary choreographer when I played the role of the Youngest Sister for The Royal Ballet’s premiere in 1971. This intense story involves five sisters ruled by their tyrannical mother and the resulting tensions that arise at the arrival of the Eldest Sister’s male suitor. MacMillan's choreography inherently expresses the characters of the predominant sisters, the introverted Eldest Sister, the waspishly mean Jealous Sister, and in contrast, the wantonly sensual Youngest Sister. It has been so rewarding to work with our talented dancers, and it has been incredibly exciting to see how both casts have developed and made these challenging roles their own.

Program 6 concludes with Balanchine’s Who Cares? with its light-hearted, Broadway atmosphere backlit by the dazzling New York cityscape. This ballet is an extreme departure from the previous piece and provides the ideal way to end the program with a joyous celebration of dance accompanied by music from brilliant Composer, George Gershwin, skillfully arranged for this ballet by the talented Hershy Kay. I would like to take this moment to thank and recognize Balanchine Répétiteur Sandra Jennings for her brilliant work in staging these Balanchine ballets to ensure the integrity and legacy of his choreographic genius lives on.

I would like to give special thanks to Cameron Grant, the Solo Pianist for Who Cares?, to Mark Kroll, the Harpsichordist for and to Jared Oaks, the Conductor for the whole performance. I hope you will enjoy this varied triple bill, blending traditional elegance, dramatic intensity, and cheerful delight.

Emeralds , the first ballet of Balanchine's iconic Jewels , contrasts sharply with the subsequent acts in its portrayal of French elegance and refinement. While Rubies embodies American neo-classicism and Diamonds celebrates the grandeur of Imperial Russian Ballet, Emeralds is a tribute to the grace and sophistication of France.

Set to Gabriel Fauré's music, which harkens back to the French Romantic ballet, of the early 19th century, Emeralds features a cast of four female and three male principals, supported by a corps de ballet. The original production starred the illustrious Violette Verdy, with dancers adorned in Karinska's opulent emerald-green costumes, reflecting Balanchine's vision of dancers as living jewels.

From the curtain’s rise, revealing graciously posed dancers in Karinska’s lavish, costumes— calf-length tutus in soft tulle for the women, handsomely-decorated tunics for the men— the music and dance flow together with ravishingly elegance.

Clive Barnes claimed of its 1967 premiere that, in Jewels , even Balanchine had never “created a work in which the inspiration was so sustained, the invention so imaginative or the concept so magnificent.”

George Balanchine CHOREOGRAPHER

Born Georgi Balanchivadze in St. Petersburg in 1904, George Balanchine emerged as a ballet colossus, leaving an indelible mark on American dance. His 60-year career saw him bring the grand Russian classical style into the modernist era, establishing the renowned New York City Ballet and contributing significantly to America's classical ballet tradition.

After graduating from the Petrograd Imperial School of Ballet in 1921, Balanchine's early choreographies with the Mariinsky Ballet challenged tradition. Joining the Ballets Russes in 1924, he swiftly became Chief Choreographer, creating iconic works like Apollo and Prodigal Son.

Following Diaghilev's death in 1929, Balanchine worked in Europe before Lincoln Kirstein persuaded him to come to America. Together, they founded the American School of Ballet (1934), leading to the formation of The American Ballet, Ballet Society, and eventually the New York City Ballet (1948).

Balanchine's ballets, marked by his musical expertise, showcased collaborations with Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and other musical luminaries. His neoclassical aesthetic bridged American modernism with Russian ballet tradition, leaving an enduring legacy as one of the world's greatest choreographers. Today, his rich repertoire continues to captivate audiences globally, affirming Balanchine's unparalleled influence on the world of dance.

Emeralds

Sandra Jennings RÉPÉTITEUR

Sandra Jennings was born in Boston, began her training with June Paxman, and later studied at Boston Ballet. Her training continued with a Ford Foundation Scholarship to the School of American Ballet (SAB). At SAB, Jennings was trained by such greats as Alexandra Danilova, Felia Doubrovska, and Stanley Williams. In 1974 she was invited by Balanchine to join the New York City Ballet and during her decade with the company, she danced an impressive repertoire, including ballets by Balanchine, Robbins, Taras, d’Amboise, Ashton, Martins, and Bournonville. In 1985 she became a Repetiteur for The George Balanchine Trust and has staged over 30 ballets for companies worldwide. From 1993-2002 she was also Ballet Mistress for Pennsylvania Ballet and from 2002-2006 for the San Francisco Ballet.

Las Hermanas

Kenneth MacMillan's ballet Las Hermanas transports viewers to a stifling Spanish summer, where five sisters endure the oppressive rule of their tyrannical mother. Based on Federico Garcia-Lorca's play The House of Bernarda Alba, the ballet delves into the complexities of familial relationships and repressed desires. Each sister embodies a distinct personality, from the eldest's spinsterish demeanor to the youngest's passionate nature, all stifled by their domineering matriarch.

Choreographed in 1963 for the Stuttgart Ballet under the direction of John Cranko, Las Hermanas marked the beginning of MacMillan's fruitful collaboration with the company. Relieved of the pressures at The Royal Ballet, MacMillan found enhanced creativity in Stuttgart, where he crafted six ballets over fifteen years. Collaborating with Nicholas Georgiadis for the set, MacMillan opted for Frank Martin's Concerto for Harpsichord and Small Orchestra, setting a moody backdrop for the intense drama.

The ballet's exploration of loneliness and oppression resonates with themes recurrent in MacMillan's work, from his early works to his final piece, The Judas Tree. Despite the original play's female-centric cast, MacMillan skillfully incorporates the male suitor, essential to the silent narrative of ballet.

Sir Kenneth Macmillan

CHOREOGRAPHER

Kenneth MacMillan, born in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1929, began his ballet journey as a scholarship winner at the Sadler’s Wells Ballet School. He Joined the Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet in 1946 under Dame Ninette de Valois. Although initially a dancer, MacMillan discovered his passion for choreography, with his first ballet Somnambulism debuting in 1953 to acclaim.

MacMillan solidified his reputation with works like Laiderette and Danses Concertantes in the 1950s. Throughout the 1960s, he challenged norms with pieces like The Invitation and created iconic full-length ballets including Romeo and Juliet , The Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake . He held directorial positions at Deutsche Oper Berlin and The Royal Ballet.

In the 1970s, MacMillan continued his prolific output with groundbreaking works like Manon and Elite Syncopations . Mayerling , premiered in 1978, garnered international acclaim. He explored historical themes in later works such as La Fin du Jour and Gloria . His fifth full-length ballet, Isadora , debuted in 1981.

Knighted in 1983, MacMillan served as Artistic Associate of American Ballet Theatre until 1989. He passed away in 1992 while choreographing a revival of the musical Carousel , leaving behind a legacy of innovation and mastery in choreographic storytelling.

Margaret Barbieri

RÉPÉTITEUR

Having spent 20 years as a Principal Dancer with The Royal Ballet, Margaret Barbieri’s wealth of knowledge and experience has enabled her to give back to the dance community through her years as a teacher and Répétiteur. During the last seven years Barbieri has staged productions for The Sarasota Ballet by some of the most important names in ballet, including Ashton, de Valois, Wright, and Fokine. In addition to staging ballets for the Company, Barbieri is also Assistant Director. Her other staging credits include Iñaki Urlezaga Company (Argentina), K-Ballet (Japan), Oregon Ballet Theatre, Scottish Ballet, and Tbilisi Ballet Theatre.

Who Cares?

George Balanchine, one of ballet's greatest Choreographers, also left an indelible mark on Hollywood and Broadway, elevating dance in the eyes of the American public. Premiering in 1970, Who Cares? epitomizes Balanchine's ability to infuse the vibrant energy of American show business with classical elegance. Its roots trace back to the 1930s when Balanchine, although unable to collaborate directly due to George Gershwin's untimely passing, was inspired by a collection of Gershwin's songs. Over three decades later, Balanchine crafted a symphonic suite showcasing these melodies for New York City Ballet, accompanied by Hershy Kay's buoyant orchestrations.

The ballet opens with a spirited ensemble, leading into solos and pas de deux that exude romantic fervor. Originally danced by New York City Ballet icons such as Karin von Aroldingen and Jacques d'Amboise, Who Cares? holds significance in Balanchine's trajectory, notably as his first ballet following Suzanne Farrell's departure from the company in 1975.

Reflecting the pulsating essence of urban life, the ballet resonates with the spirit of New York City, which deeply influenced Balanchine. Jo Mielziner's set, featuring a radiant cityscape sparkling against the night sky, encapsulates this theme. Drawing inspiration from his admiration for Fred Astaire, Balanchine imbued Who Cares? with a confident and joyous style reminiscent of the legendary performer. The ballet stands alongside Balanchine's other Americana-themed works such as Stars and Stripes, Western Symphony, and Slaughter on Tenth Avenue.
