MARGARET BARBIERI
Assistant Director Welcome to Serendipitous Movement, the final program of The Sarasota Ballet’s 2021 – 2022 Season. This Season has been particularly special for all of us here at The Sarasota Ballet for two major reasons. Firstly, we were able to welcome our patrons home as we returned to the theater; and secondly, it has marked an important anniversary— our 15th Season under the leadership of Director Iain Webb. From the moment Iain started back in 2007, he has worked tirelessly, programming rich and engaging seasons of ballet while preserving the historic and cultural value of the art form; as a result, he has bolstered the artistic excellence and reputation of The Sarasota Ballet to unprecedented, internationally recognized heights. It has been a pleasure to work with our dancers, artistic staff, and repetiteurs on this closing program. Getting to know Noah Vinson, who staged Mark Morris’s The Letter V, has been a pleasure; and, of course, it’s always wonderful to work with Sandra Jennings and Patricia Tierney, who staged Serenade and Elite Syncopations, respectively. Serendipitous Movement brings to the Sarasota stage a wealth of world-class artistry with remarkably different choreographic styles and influences, but all equally beautiful and breathtaking. This program also marks the retirement of our much loved Principal Dancer Victoria Hulland. She has been such an important part of the Company ever since Iain and I first hired her back in 2007, and coaching her through so many roles, especially the principal role in Sir Peter Wright’s Giselle, has been a true privilege. On behalf of Iain, Joe, and the entire Company, I wish her great happiness in the next chapter of her life. And on that note of new beginnings, I hope you have thoroughly enjoyed our 2021 – 2022 Season, and I look forward to seeing you for another year of the beauty of ballet in our 2022 – 2023 Season.

Program 7 | Serendipitous Movement Sandra Jennings Repetiteur
Sandra Jennings was born in Boston, and began her training with June Paxman and later studied at Boston Ballet. Her training continued with a Ford Foundation Scholarship to the School of American Ballet (SAB). At SAB Jennings was trained by such greats as Alexandra Danilova, Felia Doubrovska, and Stanley Williams. In 1974 she was invited by Balanchine to join the New York City Ballet and during her decade with the company she danced an impressive repertoire, including ballets by Balanchine, Robbins, Taras, d’Amboise, Ashton, Martins, and Bournonville. In 1985 she became a Repetiteur for The George Balanchine Trust and has staged over 30 ballets for companies worldwide. From 1993-2002 she was also Ballet Mistress for Pennsylvania Ballet and from 2002-2006 for the San Francisco Ballet.
Patricia Tierney Repetiteur
Born in Leicester, England, Patricia Tierney trained as a dancer at Bush Davies School and Rambert Academy and subsequently studied Benesh Movement Notation (BMN) at the Benesh Institute, London. She worked with the Hamburg Ballet as Choreologist from 1987, returning to England in 1992 to join English National Ballet as Choreologist before being invited to join Birmingham Royal Ballet in 1993 where she is currently Benesh Choreologist and Video Archivist. Using BMN she has recorded, assisted, and taught in rehearsals of many new ballets and revivals of works across the Birmingham Royal Ballet's repertoire, also staging ballets by Ashton, Bintley, MacMillan, and Welch, worldwide.
Noah Vinson Repetiteur
Noah Vinson is originally from Springfield, Illinois, and received his B.A. in dance from Columbia College Chicago. He was named a Dance Magazine “Dancer on the Rise” in 2009 and assisted Mark Morris in the creation of The Letter V for Houston Ballet. He began dancing with MMDG in 2002 and became a company member in 2004.
Program 7 | Serendipitous Movement SERENADE Serenade, now one of the world’s most beloved ballets, was the first work George Balanchine choreographed after arriving in the United States in 1934. Using the first three movements of Tchaikovsky’s gracious Serenade for Strings, it was made on a group of young professional and advanced student dancers. Serenade is not a completely “abstract” ballet, for there are suggestions of love returned and love lost, but the emphasis remains on the movement itself rather than any narrative. That movement is often surprisingly simple, as Balanchine first worked out much of it on students at the newly-founded School of American Ballet. When seventeen women turned up for one class, an awkward number for a choreographer, he arranged the unusual spacing that opens the ballet, still a breathtaking moment. When only six turned up, or someone was late or fell, he wove these into the ballet. The later movements developed in similar fashion, building to the surprising finale. As the great modern dancer Martha Graham noted, “It is simplicity itself – but the simplicity of a great artist.”
THE LETTER V Choreographed to Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 88 in G Major with lighting designs by Nicole Pearce and costume designs by Maile Okamura, The Letter V is an extraordinary example of Morris’s dynamic approach to dance and distinctive musicality. The ballet name originates from the fact that some of Haydn’s symphonies were once known by letters of the alphabet, with V being assigned to this piece, hence the ballet’s title. Talking before The Letter V’s world premiere in 2015, Morris revealed the artistic process behind the ballet. “I plan almost nothing in advance except I study the music, because I don’t know what I’m going to see. So when I come into the room, although I’ve seen these dancers and worked a little bit with them before, to actually start working from zero to make up a dance in a short period of time is a lot of very interesting and intuitive work. So I recognize them right away and I make up a dance on those exact people, and that’s what you’ll see when you see my dance The Letter V.”
ELITE SYNCOPATIONS Elite Syncopations is a lighthearted revue with performers in absurd costumes dancing to rags by Scott Joplin and others. With the twelve-piece orchestra onstage in what may or may not be a dance hall, the dancers, dressed in Ian Spurling’s painted tights and funny hats, take their turns in dances drawn from the ragtime era—roughly 1895-1918—that mixed European and African-American styles, the Cakewalk, Black Bottom, and the later Charleston. Adding to the fun, there are also suggestions of MacMillan’s own ballets tucked away in the details, while the dancers are given chances to show off their technical skills in unexpected ways. Although MacMillan initially intended “something short and light and funny which I can toss off and walk away from,” Elite Syncopations immediately became, and has remained, a favorite with audiences, with more substance than initially meets the eye.

Program 7 | Serendipitous Movement JOSEPH CAULKINS Guest Conductor Maestro Joseph Caulkins is at home with music from classics to pops, and baroque to ballet. His work alongside pops legend Erich Kunzel, conducting icon Robert Shaw, and master technician Helmuth Rilling have shaped him into a sensitive and dynamic conductor. In 2019, Maestro Caulkins received the Arts Leadership Award for Artistic Achievement from the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County for his many seasons as Artistic Director of Key Chorale. With Key Chorale, he has consistently delivered innovative concert experiences through adventurous programming, unique collaborations, and performances of new and rarely heard works. As a guest conductor, Maestro Caulkins has led The Venice Symphony, Space Coast Pops, The Sarasota Ballet, and the Southwest Florida Symphony where he was also Associate Conductor/Director of Choruses. Prior to his arrival in Florida, he was Artistic Director of the Bach Chamber Choir (Rockford, IL) and directed the St. Procopius Chamber Orchestra and Choirs at Benedictine University (Lisle, IL). Mr. Caulkins has produced numerous CDs, led European concert tours, conducted world and regional premieres, and commissioned new works from Dale Warland, Eric Whitacre, and Ola Gjeilo, among others.
ORMSBY WILKINS Guest Conductor A native of Sydney, Australia, Ormsby Wilkins joined American Ballet Theatre as its Music Director in November 2005. After taking his music studies at the Conservatories of Sydney and Melbourne, Wilkins joined The Australian Ballet and became resident conductor in 1982. Moving to Europe in 1983, he was appointed conductor with England’s Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet (now called the Birmingham Royal Ballet). Wilkins continued his association with The Australian Ballet, having been invited to guest on many occasions for its extensive engagements, which have included those in the United States, Russia, and London, England. Other international engagements have included La Scala, Milan, the Rome Opera Ballet, the Ballet of Teatro San Carlo of Naples, and the Royal Swedish Ballet. In 2001 he spent three months in Italy conducting once again at La Scala and making his debuts in both Genoa and at the Teatro Comunale in Florence. Most recently, Wilkins has also made guest appearances with The Sarasota Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and Miami City Ballet. Wilkins has conducted many orchestras around the world, both in association with ballet and in concert. They include the Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras of London, the Royal Opera House Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Edmonton Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Melbourne Symphony, Tokyo Philharmonic, and National Arts Centre Orchestra, Ottawa.
