The 2022 – 2023 Season

WELCOME TO THE NEW SEASON Welcome to The Sarasota Ballet’s 2022 – 2023 Season. We are delighted to present the extraordinary programs we have prepared for you this Season. From prestigious Company Premieres to beloved revivals, and exhilarating World Premieres, we continue to raise the bar and attain new and exciting achievements to bring you the finest artistic experience at The Sarasota Ballet. Program 1 launches the Season with a trio of World Premieres. New works by Company Dancers Ricardo Graziano (Resident Choreographer) and Richard House will pair with a premiere from choreographer Gemma Bond. This invigorating program marks the first time the Company will work with Bond. Two great choreographic masters, Sir Kenneth MacMillan and Sir Frederick Ashton form the basis of Program 2, with the Company Premieres of MacMillan’s Danses Concertantes and Ashton’s Dante Sonata joined by the return of Ashton’s vibrant Rhapsody. Program 3 will close 2022 with three ballets, all of which take place under the cover of night. The joyful and playful natures of Ashton’s Les Patinuers and Jerome Robbins’ Fancy Free are beautifully juxtaposed to the poignant and emotional choreography of the Company Premiere of Jerome Robbins’ In The Night. Program 4 introduces audiences to two World Premieres and the return of Ashton’s beloved Façade. The renowned Jessica Lang premieres a new work—which receives its World Premiere as a part of The Sarasota Ballet’s August 2022 residency at the Joyce Theater—alongside Company Dancer Arcadian Broad’s first ballet for the Company. With Program 5 we continue our tradition of presenting as we welcome back to Sarasota the world-renowned Dance Theatre of Harlem. Program 6 is the Company Premiere of one of the world’s oldest surviving ballets, La Sylphide. Johan Kobborg’s production of August Bournonville’s seminal full length romantic ballet is considered one of the preeminent versions and has been performed across the world by companies including The Royal Ballet and the Bolshoi Ballet. The Season comes to a close with Program 7’s celebration of George Balanchine’s enduring legacy and commemorates the 40th Anniversary of his passing. Featuring a triple bill of his works, the program aims to give audiences a snapshot of his remarkable choreographic range and depth. We hope you will join us this coming Season for another year of breathtaking ballets and world-class artistry.

EXPRESSIONS November 18 – 19, 2022 | Sarasota Opera House Highlighting the contributions of two great leaders of The Royal Ballet, Sir Frederick Ashton and Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Program 2 brings together three powerful ballets, including two Company Premieres, to the Sarasota Opera House Stage on November 18 and 19. First, the Company Premiere of MacMillan’s Danses Concertantes serves as a tribute to the choreographer following the 30th anniversary of his passing. Next, Ashton’s potent Dante Sonata, also a Company Premiere, represents an uncommonly bleak scene, created during the early stages of the Second World War as a reflection on the futility of conflict. Closing with a complete thematic inversion, Ashton’s Rhapsody dazzles with exquisite detail and virtuoso technique. THE SEASON AT NIGHT December 16 – 17, 2022 | Sarasota Opera House This trio of ballets by Sir Frederick Ashton and Jerome Robbins paint a picture of worlds meeting and departing against a juxtaposition of circumstances. In Ashton’s Les Patineurs, the bright and joyous scene of ice skaters passing each other on a frozen pond against the darkened foliage mirrors the complexities of relationships in the Company Premiere of Jerome Robbins’ In the Night. The dancers’ interactions act as points of adoration, intensity, and contention under a blanket of stars. Closing the program is the return of Robbins’ Fancy Free, where the flirtatious antics of three boisterous sailors on leave posture the jovial feelings of freedom against the severe reality of a world at war. Next, acclaimed choreographer Jessica Lang presents her latest ballet, a World Premiere created on The Sarasota Ballet for the Company’s August tour of the Joyce Theater. The program closes with a beloved Ashton favorite—Façade, a series of dance vignettes summarized as a perfect marriage of high art and sheer enjoyment, with a generous dash of genteel camp. THE SEASON DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM February 24 – 27, 2023 | FSU Center for the Performing Arts Continuing a tradition of hosting a major dance company for the Sarasota community to experience, The Sarasota Ballet’s Program 5 features the presentation of the world-renowned Dance Theatre of Harlem at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts from February 24 – 27. Called “one of ballet’s most exciting undertakings” by The New York Times, the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company, founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, presents a powerful vision for ballet in the 21st century. The 18-member, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics, neoclassical works by George Balanchine and Resident Choreographer Robert Garland, as well as innovative contemporary works that use the language of ballet as a celebration of Mitchell’s belief that ballet belongs to everyone.

LA SYLPHIDE March 24 – 25, 2023 | Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall The 2022 – 2023 Season’s Program 6 sees The Sarasota Ballet take to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall stage on March 24 and 25 for Johan Kobborg’s production of August Bournonville’s iconic full-length romantic ballet with La Sylphide. A crown jewel of Danish ballet, Bournonville’s La Sylphide premiered on November 28, 1836 at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark; the ballet recounts a narrative of a Scottish man, betrothed to a local woman, becoming entranced by the vision of a sylph, and the ensuing chaos as he is torn between two romances. Kobborg’s production preserves the source material’s dramatic potency while reinvigorating the choreography and designs and maintaining a thoroughly Danish flair. This production has become one of the preeminent versions of Bournonville’s ballet and has been performed by companies across the world including The Royal Ballet and the Bolshoi Ballet. THE SEASON TRIBUTE TO BALANCHINE April 28 – 29, 2023 | Sarasota Opera House In honor of the iconic choreographer George Balanchine and marking the 40th anniversary of his passing, The Sarasota Ballet’s Program 7 features a trio of Balanchine ballets to be performed at the Sarasota Opera House April 28 and 29. The program opens with Divertimento No. 15, choreographed to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s eponymous music and described by dance critic and historian Alastair Macaulay as, “resplendent in line, dazzling in speed, calm in phrasing, tingling in musical precision.” Next, Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments abstractly expresses the “four humours” theory from early medicine in a striking five-movement display of pure dance, with orchestration by Paul Hindemith. Program 7 closes with the joyous return of Balanchine’s Western Symphony, a charming tribute to “spaghetti Westerns” and the cowboy escapades popularized through media in the 1950s. This Program demonstrates Balanchine’s remarkable musicality and thematic diversity, key elements which contributed to his significance as a choreographic icon in American ballet.
