FEATURING LIVE MUSIC BY ARTIST SERIES CONCERTS
NOVEMBER 18 – 19, 2022 |
2 SARASOTA OPERA HOUSE
Highlighting the contributions of two great leaders of The Royal Ballet, Program 2 brings together three powerful ballets, including two Company Premieres. MacMillan’s Danses Concertantes serves as a tribute to the choreographer following the 30th anniversary of his passing. Next, Ashton’s potent Dante Sonata created during the early stages of the Second World War as a reflection on the futility of conflict. Closing with a complete thematic inversion, Ashton’s Rhapsody dazzles with exquisite detail and virtuoso technique.

AT NIGHT
DECEMBER 16 – 17, 2022 | SARASOTA OPERA HOUSE
This trio of ballets by Sir Frederick Ashton and Jerome Robbins paints a picture of worlds meeting and departing. In Ashton’s Les Patineurs, the bright and joyous scene of ice skaters passing each other on a frozen pond contrasts the complexities of relationships in Jerome Robbins’ In the Night. The dancers’ interactions act as points of adoration, intensity, and contention under a blanket of stars. Closing the Program is the return of Robbins’ Fancy Free, where the flirtatious antics of three boisterous sailors on leave posture the jovial feelings of freedom against the severe reality of a world at war.

CENTER
Continuing a tradition of hosting a major dance company for the Sarasota community to experience, The Sarasota Ballet’s Program 5 features the world-renowned Dance Theatre of Harlem. Called “one of ballet’s most exciting undertakings” by The New York Times, the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company, founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, presents a powerful vision for ballet in the 21st century. The 18-member, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics, neoclassical works by George Balanchine and Resident Choreographer Robert Garland, as well as innovative contemporary works that use the language of ballet as a celebration of Mitchell’s belief that ballet belongs to everyone.

Program 6 is Johan Kobborg’s production of August Bournonville’s iconic full-length romantic ballet, La Sylphide. A crown jewel of Danish ballet, La Sylphide recounts a narrative of a Scottish man, betrothed to a local woman, becoming entranced by the vision of a sylph, and the ensuing chaos as he is torn between two romances. Kobborg’s production preserves the source material’s dramatic potency while reinvigorating the choreography and designs and maintaining a thoroughly Danish flair. This production has become one of the preeminent versions of Bournonville’s ballet and has been performed by companies across the world including The Royal Ballet and the Bolshoi Ballet.

TRIBUTE TO BALANCHINE
APRIL 28 – 29, 2023 |
SARASOTA OPERA HOUSE
In honor of the iconic choreographer George Balanchine and marking the 40th anniversary of his passing, Program 7 features a triple bill of his ballets. The program opens with Divertimento No. 15, choreographed to Mozart’s eponymous music and described as, “resplendent in line, dazzling in speed, calm in phrasing, tingling in musical precision.” Next, Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments abstractly expresses the “four humours” theory in a striking five-movement display of pure dance. Program 7 closes with the joyous return of Balanchine’s Western Symphony, a charming tribute to “Spaghetti Westerns” and the cowboy escapades popularized through media in the 1950s.
