10th ANNIVERSARY ISSUE

Driving Forward ately, I’m of the mind that the Saratoga Automobile Museum is stronger than ever, and that our mission is firing on all cylinders—to preserve, interpret and exhibit automobiles and their requisite artifacts, as well as celebrate the automobile and educate the general public, students and enthusiasts about the role of the automobile in New York State and in the wider world. Beyond all of that good stuff, our goal is to create a lasting community around this mission. In March 2020, that community—and our Museum— were put to the test, during the COVID-19 outbreak. First, the New York International Auto Show was postponed until August. Then, we watched as many of our fellow museums and the local businesses we work so closely with in the community temporarily closed. We followed suit, per New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s recommendation, and at press time, plan to remain closed until the threat of COVID-19 has been eliminated. Though our doors are closed, in the spirit of looking forward, I’d like to introduce some of our exciting upcoming exhibitions and programming. Our current exhibitions include I Love Cars, which features stories by car owners about their favorite rides (through Sunday, May 31); and Wheels: Woman and Independence 1900-1920, which features the experiences of six women car enthusiasts; as well as our many permanent collection items. We’re also extremely excited about our upcoming 15-racecar exhibition, courtesy of Dyson Racing’s Rob Dyson, which begins this June. Rob has generously leant us a number of his favorite racecars, including some that he raced himself. Of course, we’ll be ramping up our lawn shows this summer—and don’t forget to consign for or buy tickets to our annual Saratoga Motorcar Auction (formerly the Saratoga Auto Auction), which takes place this September 18-19 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. With the Saratoga Automobile Museum better than ever, I’m positive that we’ll get through this difficult time that much more stronger. Sincerely,

CARLY CONNORS

Get Your Motor Runnin’

Ten songs to blast on your next crosscountry (or crosstown) adventure. BY WILL LEVITH

ne of life’s simplest pleasures? Clicking your seatbelt in, putting your car in gear and just driving, without a care or destination. The best sidecar to a roadway-to-nowhere adventure? An amazing soundtrack. And while there are truckloads of songs to choose from, HORSEPOWER’s whittled the list down to our ten favorites.

➊ Wilson Pickett, “Mustang Sally” » Although “Mustang Sally” was originally written and recorded in 1965, it was Wilson Pickett who made it famous in ’66. If your car happens to have a video screen in the backseat, we suggest watching the 1991 film The Commitments, which also features a wonderful, spot-on cover of the song. ➋ Tom Cochrane/Rascal Flatts, “Life Is A Highway” » If you’re of a certain age, you’ll remember when Canadian rocker Tom Cochrane’s original cracked the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Your kids will probably be more familiar with the Rascal Flatts version from the soundtrack to the movie Cars, which was also a Top 10 hit.

10th ANNIVERSARY ISSUE

➌ Bruce Springsteen, “Born To Run” » New Jersey rock legend Bruce Springsteen—a.k.a. The Boss—might as well be made out of auto parts. He’s written some of the greatest car songs ever, and “Born To Run” is arguably his best. We’ll strap our hands ’cross this one’s engines any day.

CELEB CORNER

STARS AND THEIR CARS

➍ The Beach Boys, “Little Deuce Coupe” » Songwriters Brian Wilson and Roger Christian must’ve been thumbing through an auction catalog when they wrote “Little Deuce Coupe,” the world’s grandest ode to the 1932 Ford Coupe. At just under 2 minutes long, the tune’ll go by as fast as the car itself drives, were you to be drag racing in one yourself.. ➎ Tom Petty, “Runnin’ Down A Dream” » Technically a solo album, the late Tom Petty’s Full Moon Fever might as well be its own road trip playlist. But the true car-fanatic nugget in the set is “Runnin’ Down A Dream,” a tune that makes you want to step on the gas pedal and never let it up.

Whether wistful or cracking Car Talk-worthy jokes, these A-list celebs really love their rides.

❻ The Grateful Dead, “Truckin’” » What a long strange trip it’s been, for sure. While the Dead were likely talking about a lysergic highway, not a physical one in this ditty, “Truckin’” still ranks among the top tracks to blare while you’re coasting—not speeding—down the golden road. ➐ Sammy Hagar, “I Can’t Drive 55” » Speaking of speeding, Sammy Hagar’s 1984 single “I Can’t Drive 55” was supposedly written soon after the rocker got a ticket on The Northway (i.e. Interstate 87) back in the day. Take Exit 13N off of I-87 and get a ticket to the Saratoga Automobile Museum. ➑ Don McLean, “American Pie” » As you know, The Saratoga Automobile Museum’s located in beautiful Saratoga Springs, NY—the site of historic folk venue Caffè Lena, where a young Don McLean cut his teeth in the ’60s. For years, there was a rumor that McLean actually wrote “American Pie” in a Saratoga bar, but, alas, the folkie’s since dispelled it. Either way, at 8 minutes and 37 seconds long, the tune is perfect for long stretches of highway.

“I’m so fluent in cars, I can tell what a car’s going to do based on the model and color of the car. I know the driver. I know who would buy that car, I know who’s at the wheel, and I know how he’s going to act, I can predict his next move.” –JERRY SEINFELD

➒ Steppenwolf, “Born To Be Wild” » Steppenwolf ’s “Born To Be Wild,” which was featured prominently in the (motorcycle) road trip movie to end all road trip movies, Easy Rider, soared all the way to No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Whether you’re on a steel steed or in a drop-top, this one’ll get your heart rate up. ➓ The Beatles, “Drive My Car” » Beep-beep, beepbeep, yass queen. Ask your buddy that likes The Rolling Stones better than The Beatles to identify their best car song. (They don't have one.) The Lennon-McCartney machine dropped this stunner on the 1965 UK version of (HP) Rubber Soul—and it’s a must for your playlist.

“Cars are like children: It’s hard to say that any one is more special than the other. There are little things about each car that you come to love, whether it’s the look, the steering wheel, the way it drives or even the way it drives differently when you put the top up. They all have identities; they have spirits and characteristics that are truly endearing in some way.” –RALPH LAUREN

“A guy knows he’s in love when he loses interest in his car for a couple of days.” –TIM ALLEN

“Do we have to know who’s gay and who’s straight? Can’t we just love everybody and judge them by the car they drive?” –ELLEN DEGENERES

Hot Wheels vs. The Real Deal

SIZE DOESN’T MATTER

This 1967 Chevy Camaro is worth far less than its tiny, über-rare (most likely unique) toy relative, the Redline Enamel White Hong Kong Version.

The tale of a toy Camaro whose resale value leaves the real thing in the dust. BY NATALIE MOORE

hen toy collector and Pawn Stars regular Joel Magee bought an inconspicuous white Hot Wheels car at a collector event (the ambiguity is deliberate—he doesn’t even remember where he bought it), he didn’t think anything of it. Upon closer inspection, though, Magee discovered that the car was actually a Redline Enamel White Hong Kong Version of the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro—the only one of its kind known to exist. Magee learned that the toy car was a prototype made in Hong Kong, identifiable by its white enamel paint that was used to hide its flaws. The speculation is that this prototype somehow made it from Hong Kong to Mattel’s US headquarters and was accidentally packaged along with the US models. That story alone is compelling cocktail chatter, but here’s the doozy: Magee estimates that the toy car is worth $100,000. That’s four times more than a 2020 Chevy Camaro costs and 169,491 times more expensive than the toy car would have cost in the ’60s. Talk about resale value. Here’s how the 1967 Chevy Camaro Hot Wheels Redline Enamel White Hong Kong (HP) Version compares to a real 1967 Chevy Camaro Coupe.

GRAND DEBUT

ith his legendary background as a championship racecar driver and as the owner of Dyson Racing of Poughkeepsie, NY, Rob Dyson is a man on the move. Having already competed successfully with his team in famed North American racing series such as the IMSA GT Championship and American Le Mans Series, Dyson, at age 73, is still today one of the busiest guys you’ll come across, and a very hard man to pin down. When HORSEPOWER finally caught up with him in midMarch, as the COVID-19 crisis gripped the nation and the world, we discovered why he’d been so elusive—and it had nothing to do with the car racing. For several days, Dyson had been busy helping to establish COVID-19 testing sites throughout his home base of Dutchess County. When local politicians, community leaders and health care professionals urgently needed to put a plan in motion to deal with the pandemic—and quickly—they knew just who to call. Unsurprisingly, Dyson got the job done, arranging for four makeshift, portable clinics and securing the locations for them to be housed. “Look, it’s about serving your community,” he says. “The thing about this country is, everybody’s got to help everybody else. You know the old saying ‘If you have your health, you have everything’? Well, that is the truth.” HORS EPOWER (

With that admirable drive and outlook on life, it’s no wonder Dyson Rob Dyson at the has reached the level of success 2000 Rolex 24 at and popularity that he’s enjoyed Daytona, which he throughout his career. Dyson has went on to win. been a fixture of the racing world since 1974, when he raced his Datsun 510 sedan at Watkins Glen before moving up to the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) nationals in 1977, winning a national championship in 1981 in a Nissan 200SX. He and his team would go on to compete in numerous races—among them, the Watkins Glen International, 24 Hours of Daytona, Pirelli World Challenge, World Sportscar Championship and 12 Hours of Sebring. Over the years, Dyson and his team have competed from behind the wheel of every make and model of car, from Ford to Ferrari, and have enjoyed relationships with a number of automakers, including Mazda and Lola. But it is their longstanding partnership with Porsche for which they’re best known, a relationship that dates back to 1985, when Dyson and co-driver Drake Olson began a four-year winning streak at the Porsche Cup of North America. And Dyson Racing is a family affair—Dyson’s son, Chris Dyson, raced for the team from 2001-2013 and is now vice president of the company. Closer to home, Dyson has an established relationship with the Saratoga Automobile Museum, to which he has loaned 15 cars from his collection for a major exhibition that kicks off this June. The cars that will be on display include those Dyson himself has raced, plus models he has owned for years and some he’s only recently acquired. Not that these are the first cars Dyson has had on display in Saratoga. In 2017, a Lola B09/86 prototype, which Dyson Racing campaigned to a pair of championships in the American Le Mans Series, got a new home in the Saratoga Automobile Museum’s Racing in New York State exhibit, a major feature of the museum that displays a number of racecars and artifacts from the history of motorsport in the state. Back when Dyson loaned the Lola to the museum, Ron Hedger, a member of the museum’s board of trustees and the person who oversees the Racing in New York State exhibit and related programming, called it “a remarkable example of high-tech racing,” adding 22

“If you’re a car guy, the Saratoga Automobile Museum is the place to be.”

ROB REPORT that the Dyson family has deep roots Rob Dyson in the in Upstate New York, having made Porsche 962-101 their home in the Hudson Valley for at Amelia Island more than four decades. in 2018. Anticipating this summer’s exhibition, Carly Connors, the museum’s executive director, noted that the Dyson family are longtime supporters, calling the Lola that’s on permanent display “a testament to Dyson Racing’s dedication to the museum and the education of our youth about the importance the automobile has played in New York history. We are honored to host the Dyson collection for this exhibition and can’t wait to showcase it to the public.” Dyson’s generosity to the Saratoga Automobile Museum, which opened in 2002, hinges on his admiration and support of the museum and its mission of preservation and education. In addition to loaning his cars to the museum, he is an active participant in its exhibits and other functions, having visited and given a number of talks there throughout the years. “It is a fantastic, historic building,” he says of the lovingly restored Saratoga Bottling Plant (for full story, see page 60) that now houses the museum. “To be able to house cars of all types and all sizes there is really terrific. If you’re a car guy, it is the place to be. Ron Hedger and the staff over there make it great, and people respect it—it’s getting better and better every year.” When he was asked to participate in the June exhibition, Dyson didn’t hesitate for a minute. “Clearly, I’m a car guy,” he says. “I love my racing and I love my old racecars, so when they asked me if I wanted to show some of them I said, why not? They’re really neat and have brought me so much joy. There are so many stories behind them, and I wanted to share them with people who visit the museum—and I hope they’ll think they’re neat, too.” This June, the auto museum will be open Tuesday-Sunday, 10am-5pm, and will eventually be open seven days a week during the summer months. Adds Dyson of his upcoming 15-sportscar exhibition: “I am honored and pleased to have my cars at the Saratoga Automobile Museum. People are really going to enjoy it, and I hope (HP) that it adds to the reputation of what is a great museum.”

I

t’s no longer enough for true car lovers to have just a man cave (or she shed)—those one-room jobbers that are offset from your home’s garage and stuffed to the gills with amenities such as a flat-screen TV, leather Lay-Z-Boy, mini-fridge, cigar humidor and wine fridge. Nowadays, traditional one-room hideaways have been taken to the next level—especially for automobile enthusiasts. They’re called “car condos,” and have been sprouting up everywhere from Florida, Georgia and Minnesota to Arizona, Oklahoma and California. First things first: What exactly elevates even the largest of car garages to an actual car condo? Think luxury, temperature-controlled pied-à-terre, with Fort Knoxworthy security, where you do not merely store your high-end automobile collection—you showcase it. The top ones are humanfriendly, too, so you can host private, invite-only events there—or just that cool uncle you always wanted to impress. One company that sells these beauties, Naples, FL-based Ultimate Garages, has taken the car condo concept and run with it, offering its clientele more than just a home-awayfrom-home for their car collections: It’s offering a “lifestyle” and “community,” too, says Ultimate Garages’ Founder James Buonavolonta. Besides storage and private suites, Ultimate Garages offers its clients a concierge program, club membership and special members-only events. On a macro level, Buonavolonta says that the impetus behind launching the business was to satisfy the need, among South Floridian car enthusiasts, for collection protection. “We have pretty intense weather at times, especially during hurricane season,” he says.

“Car condos are luxury, temperaturecontrolled pied-á-terres with Fort Knox-worthy security... for your car collection.” “So there’s a need for people to protect their cars.” But another big driver was less about practicality and more about bringing the disparate collector masses together. Ultimate Garages serves the purpose of “bringing together car enthusiasts across the board, from the antique collector to the exotic car collector, and to complement existing car clubs, not compete with them,” he says. What sets Ultimate Garages apart from the competition is that it offers owners “livable spaces,” or a lounge, kitchen and office all in the same unit where their cars are kept. He notes that enthusiasts should be careful when seeking out car condos, as the term gets thrown around quite a bit. In short, many spaces can provide enthusiasts with only storage, not the livable amenities his business can. (Currently, Ultimate Garages houses 15 owners and includes a social membership of approximately 100 car enthusiasts.) LOVE COMPARTMENT

MONDO CONDO

Ultimate Garages in Naples, FL, offers its enthusiasts “livable spaces” as part of its luxe car condos.

Car condos are just as much a necessity out West as they are here in the East. “We have many car enthusiasts who call the Monterey Peninsula home, as well as many frequent visitors who attend the many world-renowned, car-related events here year-round,” says Gordon McCall, a partner and member of the development team for the Monterey Motorsports Park, a 90,000-square-foot complex that boasts four buildings and 86 garage-condo units, based in Monterey, CA. “Being able to own your own space, with an office as well, is proving to be quite desirable, including the favorable tax advantage that comes with ownership,” he says. “This is, of course, given the cost and complexities of obtaining permits in this county for expanding at home, providing one has the space to do so, which is rare.” How much will one of these bad boys set you back? At the Monterey Motorsports Park, McCall tells HORSEPOWER that the smallest unit sells in the mid-to-high $200,000 range, while the largest one weighs in at $700,000-plus. “Owners are free to customize their space,” says McCall, “to whatever suits their needs.” So, your significant other has got you down because of all that car clutter? We see a car condo as the most elegant of solutions. (HP) HORS EPOWER (

founded on his family’s property in Burnt Hills. Bailey launched the company in 1964, with sports car champion Donahue partnering with him in 1972; the two had become friends during their time racing for Porsche of America. In fact, the “mark” in Racemark International is actually a nod to Donahue, who passed away in 1975 after an accident during a practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix. After the loss of his friend and business partner, Bailey continued running the company. What started as a small mail-order business for Porsche accessories and custom floor mats has grown into an international auto accessories giant, supplying high-quality floor mats, roll bars and uniforms to brand-name clients that include Honda, Toyota, BMW, Tesla and of course, Porsche. The familyowned company, which is headquartered in Calhoun, GA and has several factories in Europe, currently supplies Goodyear Racing with all of its uniforms. Another big-name client who used Racemark International’s uniforms? None other than late Hollywood royalty and fellow racing fanatic Newman. “Paul had an incredible passion for racing,” says Bailey, who got to know the Oscar-winning actor on the racing circuit, as well as at Newman’s Double H Ranch, which offers year-round programming for children and families dealing with life-threatening diseases. (Bailey served on the camp’s board of directors for many years.) “He used to come to the camp every summer for a visit,” says Bailey of Newman’s dedication to Double H. “Of course, we always talked about racing while he was here. Terrific guy, and he was a tremendous racing driver, too.” Since retiring from the professional racing world, Bailey hasn’t slowed down, with accomplishments including a 15-year stint playing polo and helping found the Saratoga Polo Association. But he says that one of his proudest accomplishments is being a founding member of the Saratoga Automobile Museum. “We had a rare opportunity to do it,” says Bailey of the chance to renovate what was then a vacant water bottling plant into the museum. “At the time, Governor [George] Pataki was pushing to reuse old state facilities that were sitting there. So, the other founding members and I put together a program to do a historic renovation of the building and turn it into an automobile museum.” The rest, as they say, is history. With its 20th anniversary approaching in 2022, it’s fair to say that the Saratoga Automobile Museum has been a roaring success. With former pro racers like Bob Bailey on the board, it’s no wonder it took off the way it did. (HP)

aratoga Automobile Museum’s founding board member and Vice Chairman Bob Bailey doesn’t just love racing, he’s lived it. In addition to helping open the auto museum to the public in 2002 and founding his own racing accessories empire, Racemark International, Bailey’s track record also includes 15 years as a professional race car driver. The bulk of that time was spent with the Porsche of America Racing Team, where he finished first in the Grand Touring (GT) class at a Daytona 24-hour race. Along the way, he crossed paths with some serious celebrity racers such as 1972 Indianapolis 500 winner Mark Donahue, who became his business partner; and screen legend and racing enthusiast Paul Newman, who co-founded the Double H Ranch in nearby Lake Luzerne, NY. And Bailey’s lifelong love of racing began right here in the Capital Region. “Those things—love of cars, love of racing—started way back in my childhood,” says Bailey, who grew up on an abandoned apple orchard in Burnt Hills. “My father would go to all the races as a spectator. He took the family to Sebring Raceway in Florida in 1955 when I was, maybe, 12 years old, and I got to meet Stirling Moss, the famous British racing driver.” Meeting Moss, Bailey says, is what really gave him the racing bug. Bailey was so taken by the idea of becoming a race car driver that the Upstate New York native spent his teenage years racing junkyard cars in a sandpit behind the family’s old apple orchard. In ’61, after graduating from high school, he bought a brand-new Porsche Roadster and headed to Canada to kickstart his career. “In those days, you had to be 21 to race professionally in the US,” says Bailey. “In Canada, you only had to be 18.” Bailey competed for three years in Canada before returning to the US, where over the next dozen-plus years he notched some impressive wins, including a Daytona 24-hour race in 1971 where—co-driving with two Canadian racers, Jacques Duval and George Nicholas—Bailey finished first in the GT class and seventh overall. Just a week after that big race, Bailey, along with Duval and Nicholas, were honored during a celebration in Montréal where the three racers received keys to the city. “That,” says Bailey, “was an incredible moment.” Even while a busy, successful race car driver, Bailey still found time to create and grow Racemark International, his own business of racing accessories that, appropriately enough, was

EMBIRICOS’ BENTLEY

A one-off special-bodied model intended to investigate the possibility of a “low-drag” Bentley, this car was built for Greek shipping magnate André Embiricos and clothed in a lightweight, aerodynamic, aluminum body designed by Paulin in France and constructed by the coachbuilding company Pourtout.

Pages Of Time Assouline’s lavish new book, The Impossible Collection of Bentley, brings to life a century of history.

GRAND CONVERTIBLE CONCEPT Previewed in 2012, shown in concept form in 2014 and confirmed for production in 2017, this ultimate, open Grand Tourer will be made available to just 19 lucky customers (to signify Bentley’s birth in 1919), each paying $3.5 million to own a true work of automotive art. Each car will be bespoke, but it’s unlikely many (if any) will pass on the tonneau cover made from the largest piece of veneer ever seen on a Bentley, finished with strips of chromed steel.

8-LITRE This is the last Bentley designed in its entirety by Bentley Founder W.O. Bentley.

n October 1919, in a small workshop on a London side street, an EXP 1 engine roared to life for the first time. This was the beginning, though no one present at the time could know it—not Walter Owen Bentley, not his small team of engineers and not even the nurse who stormed over from the neighboring care home to scold the men for causing such a racket—of what would go on to become the definitive British luxury car brand known the world over as Bentley. From 1919’s EXP 1 and the Le Mans 3-Litre, the first Bentley to win the famed Le Mans race, to 2003’s Continental GT and the EXP 100 GT, a concept car celebrating the brand’s 100th anniversary, Bentley’s storied and sometimes troublesome century-long history is chronicled in The Impossible Collection Of Bentley: The 100 At 100 (Assouline). One hundred of the brand’s most significant cars are rediscovered within the coffee table book’s pages, and the story that accompanies them is one of resilience, one that proves W.O. Bentley’s singular vision—“to build a fast car, a good car, the best in its class”—is one that transcends individual people, company ownership and, in fact, time itself. Back in that legendary London workshop, when the nurse came over to complain about the noise, her reason for concern was that she had a man dying in her care. The response given by the group of men, the forefathers of the Bentley brand, certainly still rings true for anyone proud to get behind the wheel of a car with wings on its nose: “As (HP) sounds to die to go, few could be sweeter than this.”

SIX-CYLINDER

MULSANNE GRAND LIMOUSINE Before World War II, all luxury cars had bespoke, coach-built bodies; today, almost none do. The Mulsanne Grand Limousine is an exception to that rule, featuring a one thousand-millimeter wheelbase extension and four seats in the passenger compartment facing each other in pairs, in the style of a private jet. (left)White driving gloves and signature Assouline tote included: This $1450 collector’s item (the book from which all of these photos were taken) is housed in a hand-stitched, leather-bound limited edition case. BENTAYGA Eyebrows headed north when Bentley announced it was to make its first SUV, but really there was no reason to doubt the concept, let alone the car it led to. For in its speed, the luxury it provides and its enormous versatility lie the very hallmarks of W.O.’s vision for the cars that bore his name. Would he have approved of the Bentayga? More than that, he would have loved it.

OVERDRIVE

f you’re lucky enough to call Saratoga Springs home—or are just in town visiting the Saratoga Automobile Museum—you’ll know that there are a number of equally idyllic destinations within driving distance of the Spa City. One popular day trip is to Lake Placid in just under two hours. It’s not only a quaint village packed with can’t-miss shops, spas and restaurants, but it’s also the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games—the latter of which wrote itself into the history books via the “Miracle On Ice” hockey game and speedskater Eric Heiden’s record run of five gold medals. You can make it to Lake Placid, which lies just northwest of Saratoga, in one fell swoop. But if you’re reading this magazine, you’re most likely of the ilk that believes life on the road is too precious for an “in it to win it” trip north. So we’ve curated the very best long, detour-filled drive that you and your luxury car club-worthy ride deserve.

10th ANNIVERSARY ISSUE

THE

ULTIMATE LAKE

From Saratoga, head due north on the Northway, I-87. Then, hop off at Exit 21 and drive northward. Just before you enter Lake George Village, take a left on the Prospect Mountain Highway, for our first oh-so-worth-it diversion. Prospect Mountain Highway Simply put, Prospect Mountain Highway is two miles of unforgettable vistas. The drive takes you up to the summit of 2030-foot Prospect Mountain, from which you can see Vermont’s Green Mountains; New Hampshire’s White Mountains; and, of course, New York’s Adirondack Mountains, surrounding “The Queen Of American Lakes,” Lake George. The drive upward features plenty of spots to pull over for photo/ selfie opportunities, as well as picnic locations near the summit.

PLACID ROAD TRIP

OK, back on the road. For time’s sake, we’ll head back to the Northway, but bookmark the portion of Route 9N that follows the western shore of Lake George for another time. (It takes you through the Tongue Mountain range by way of a beautiful, freshly paved mountain road.) Take Exit 30 and head northwest on Route 73. High Peaks Scenic Byway Also known as Route 73, the High Peaks Scenic Byway is the quintessential Upstate New York drive. From the food truck just off of the Northway (we recommend the chicken gyro) to beautiful Keene and beyond, the road takes you through a stunning portion of the six million-acre Adirondack Park, the largest piece of publicly protected land in the country. Route 73 continues from Keene right into Lake Placid, but your fun isn’t over just yet. Veer right in Keene onto 9N toward Jay, where you’ll take a left on 86 to Wilmington. There, 86 turns into Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway.

Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway Completed in 1935, the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway is an eight-mile route that takes you to just below the summit of New York’s fifth tallest peak, Whiteface Mountain. To get to the summit, you have to take a 27-story, glass-enclosed elevator inside the mountain. When the elevator’s doors open, you’ll be rewarded with jaw-dropping 360-degree views of the surrounding area, including Lake Placid, the Olympic Village and hundreds of miles of Adirondack wilderness in every direction. If you go back down into Wilmington and take a right on 86, it’s a short drive toward the Village of Lake Placid. (Check in at the base of Whiteface Ski Resort on the way—in season, of course.) The best part? Your drive may be (HP) over, but your stay in beautiful Lake Placid has just begun.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

The Mission Continues

S

ince 2002, the Saratoga Automobile Museum has worked tirelessly to preserve the automotive history and culture of New York State. Since its chartering, the Museum has proudly displayed historically significant automobiles in its exhibit spaces and through open events on the Museum lawn. We have welcomed the local community to admire, learn and become inspired by the automobiles that reside in our region and beyond. We augmented our mission to include our Safe Roads Programs, which included an emphasis on educating local communities about the dangers of distracted driving and learning the importance of utilizing defensive driving skills. Over the course of nearly 20 years, the Museum has done this extremely well with the continued support from our local community and reached more than 100,000 people. We need to continue this vital educational programming. The Museum is also gearing up for our fourth annual Saratoga Motorcar Auction, taking place on September 18 and September 19 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center here in picturesque and historic Saratoga Springs, NY. The auction is the Museum’s largest fundraiser and helps support our aforementioned educational programs. Our team has been working around the clock and has already secured some incredible consignments for the auction. We have also kicked off our annual Over nearly the past two decades, the Saratoga sweepstakes to win a brand-new Mercedes-Benz Automobile’s programs have reached more SLC300 roadster. Every ticket purchase than 100,000 people. helps support the Museum and its mission. You can learn more about our sweepstakes on the Museum’s website. We thank Keeler Motorcar Company for its sponsorship of this year’s sweepstakes and its continued support. Your generosity and spirit have been a shining light that has helped guide our efforts to further our Museum for nearly 20 years. We need that continued effort and generosity now, more than ever to go confidently into the next 20 years. Our beloved Museum is an important thread in the fabric of our local community; please consider making a donation, becoming a Museum member or purchasing tickets to our sweepstakes to ensure that we can be stronger than ever. Celebrating The Life Of

Anthony DePaula The Saratoga Auto Museum will be paying tribute to late board member DePaula later this summer.

Anthony “Tony” DePaula was not only a largerthan-life persona in the Capital Region automotive sales world, as owner and president of DePaula Auto Group, he was also a great friend to the Saratoga Automobile Museum, where he served as a board member. He died suddenly last October— and to honor his life, the Museum will be hosting a celebration of his life later this summer.

• Saratoga Hathorn Water: This naturally carbonated saline water was primarily used as a laxative and was usually taken before breakfast. • Saratoga Coesa Water: Coesa is a naturally sparkling saline-alkaline water recommended by physicians for certain conditions of the gall bladder and gastro-intestinal tract. • State Seal Water: The search for a drinking water that didn’t have a mineral-y taste led to the discovery of State Seal Water in the State Reservation at Saratoga Springs. In 1915, chemist Herbert (Doc) Ant sampled 15 different springs of still water to find a nutritional, good-tasting drinking water to quench the public’s thirst. After careful research, Ant discovered a water that had an appealing taste and was ideal for low-salt diets. Dr. Ant’s water was bottled and commercially sold as Saratoga State Seal Water. In 2002, the popular State Seal Spring was rerouted across the street from its earlier location within the bottling plant. This provided easier access, parking and protection during all types of weather for the countless people who collected its water.

An all-terrain concept vehicle from Audi, the AI: TRAIL quattro, is the future of off-road travel (drones included).

T

BY NATALIE MOORE

he Audi AI:TRAIL quattro pulls out all the stops...without ever really stopping. This fully electric, zero-emissions, off-road concept vehicle is built for highly automated long-distance driving in the great outdoors: Its range is 300 miles on roads or easy off-road terrain, and 150 miles on rough ground. Debuting at the 2019 International Motor Show in Germany, the Audi AI:TRAIL is equipped with five drones—yes, you read that right—that serve as lighting and cameras to help drivers find the perfect camping spot out in the wilderness. The concept vehicle is also stocked with hanging rear passenger seats that can be removed and taken with you; floor-to-ceiling windows, similar to that of a helicopter cabin, which provide panoramic views of nature; and interior features fashioned from sustainably produced, natural materials such as wood, felt and wool. Now, all we need is Audi to bring the (HP) AI:TRAIL to market. Mother Nature is waiting.
