The Spirit of Christmas

Welcome to the 19th Annual

Saratoga Festival of Trees The The holiday season is often challenging for many individuals and families living in the tri-county region. Many are finding it difficult to get and keep jobs that pay enough to meet their basic needs. They are having trouble putting nutritious food on their tables, locating affordable and stable housing and securing adequate health care for themselves and their families. The parallel challenge for each of us is to respond to the needs of the poor and vulnerable among us with compassion and generosity, and to advocate for systemic change that guarantees the basic necessities for all of our neighbors. In the midst of these trying times, we are aware of our own vulnerability as well as a heightened sensitivity to our deep interconnectedness. It is with a spirit of increased consciousness of the blessings in our lives that we invite you to enjoy this creative holiday fantasy of delightfully decorated trees, wreaths, and centerpieces. Please stop at our raffle table, shop at the Holiday Store and join us for Breakfast with Santa on Saturday – a fun filled day of children’s activities in Santa’s Workshop. Returning again this year is the exquisite miniature Circus, Carnival and Train exhibit built over a 40 year period and presented by its owner, Don Erlenbusch. May the many magical moments of this year’s festival fill our spirits with the peace and joy of the Christmas season. Behind the scenes, scores of dedicated volunteers spent countless hours planning and preparing for this event to be enjoyed by the entire community. For them we are most grateful. Programs & Services

Catholic Charities of

Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties The Saratoga Festival of Trees is the largest fundraiser supporting the programs and services offered by Catholic Charities of Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties. Engaging the energies of the tri- county communities, Catholic Charities has become a vital part of life for many individuals and families in the region. During 2013, over 7,000 individuals were served by the agency. These services were provided by 54 staff. In addition, 331 volunteers gave 28,000 hours of their time.

Programs and Services offered by Catholic Charities: • Counseling – Individual, couple and family counseling and group support. This program provided 3,757 hours of mental health services to 1,717 individuals including 519 children 1,141 adults and 57 elderly. • Domestic Violence Project – Shelter, counseling, crime victim services, advocacy, education, 24 hour hotline services for victims of domestic violence and their children in Warren and Washington counties. In 2013, 586 adults and 242 children came through our programs. A total of 2,200 bed-nights were provided in the safe shelter. In addition, 2,700 individuals received education and prevention services. • Donovan House – Ballston Spa community-based residential group home program for adolescent boys that provided 14 boys a cumulative 2,081 days of care last year. • Mary’s Haven – A community home for the dying serving persons with irreversible illness, who are in the last three months of their lives and who no longer can remain safely in their homes. In 2013, we served 22 families and provided 432 bed-nights to the terminally ill. • Mentoring Program – Prevention / diversion program impacting youth’s academic, social, and emotional milieu. 123 youth and 57 of their family members took part in the program last year. 10 | Saratoga Christmas | 2014

• Services to the Elderly were provided to 244 senior citizens. • Emergency Services were provided to 1,178 individuals seeking assistance with concrete basic needs. • The agency received funding from the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP) which will provide outreach and education to low income households in Warren County about the benefits of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program. Programs and Services are available to anyone in Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties, always accompanied by information, referral and advocacy as needed. Individuals are never refused services because of their inability to pay. The Circus is Returning to The Festival! We’re thrilled to welcome Don Erlenbusch back to the 2014 Festival of Trees! His miniature Circus, Carnival and Train were a huge hit last year with the young and the young-at-heart. Pick Up:

Pick up time for small trees, wreaths and centerpieces: 3:30-4 p.m. on Sunday, December 7th. The Saratoga Festival of Trees cannot be responsible for displays not picked up on time.

Tree Delivery:

Large trees will be delivered free of charge within a 10-mile radius of Saratoga beginning Monday, December 8th. Please provide the sales table with the best time for delivery.

Bruce O’Connell:

Energy:

The strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity.

Energy is what keeps us moving. It’s transferred from one object to another when a reaction takes place. It’s what keeps cars rolling, rivers flowing, and even works in a seemingly intangible way – from person to person. When one person expends energy through an act of kindness, another person finds hope, strength to move forward.

Born in Albany, New York, Bruce graduated from Bethlehem High School. He went on to Lafayette College in Pennsylvania to earn a teaching degree and landed in the Education Department back in Albany. Working in Albany in the mid 1970s, he and his wife, Madge, also served as house parents in a group home for at-risk youth in Lansingberg.

Meet Bruce O’Connell – an energy source. If you came across Bruce in passing, you might think, “He seems like a nice guy.” His positive attitude seems normal for a friendly person. But, once he walks away, a curious thing happens. You’re still smiling…and the smile lasts all day long.

“We oversaw seven young men who were there for petty crimes such as stealing food to feed their siblings. At the time, the court had the luxury of providing alternatives to immediate jail time. Madge and I were their opportunity to learn, and self-correct their actions,” said Bruce.

Bruce has the ability to fill an entire room with goodness. His gentle demeanor is only a guise for the reverberating energy he carries. But, where does it all come from? And why does he dedicate so much of this energy to the mission of Catholic Charities?

It was this first interaction with the people we too often refer to as “others” that instilled a passion for service in Bruce. When he looked at those boys, he saw the same beliefs, values, dreams and goals that he had. One crucial mistake was the only difference between them.

Bruce said, “Only in hindsight did we realize how important this was for them. We received a call years later from one of the boys. He was now serving in the Navy, a place he never could have dreamed of if he hadn’t been given the chance to avoid jail.” By the 1980s, Bruce was working for the Rensselaer BOCES building professional development programs for teachers, before transitioning to the WashingtonSaratoga-Warren BOCES for the remainder of his career. After settling in the Glens Falls area, he met the agency director for Catholic Charities of Warren and Washington Counties and was asked to join the Board of Directors.

“That was a big step. I was completely amazed at how many of my neighbors, the agency was helping,” said Bruce. “I’m still so inspired by the work they do. From counseling, youth mentoring, services for domestic violence victims and their children, a group home for adolescent boys, end of life care for terminally ill persons, nutrition outreach and education to case management and public outreach – the agency staff are good souls.” Sister Charla Commins, Executive Director of Catholic Charities in the tri-county region, speaks glowingly of Bruce’s long time dedication and commitment to the mission of the agency, “Bruce leads by example – giving generously of his time, talent and resources, always stepping up where needed. Bruce is the current president of the Board of Directors for Catholic Charities of Saratoga, Warren, and Washington Counties. But, while he carries this title modestly (he’d much rather talk about how fantastic everyone else he works with is), the impact the agency has is extensive. The three counties reach from North Creek to Sacandaga, down through Cambridge to Saratoga, all the way to Burnt Hills and Clifton Park. saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

“We’re talking about a vast population of people. In a perfect world, we’d have one person on every street corner watching and asking, ‘Do you need help?’” Bruce went on to explain that the more we learn about the available services, the better we’ll be at recognizing that person in the grocery line, the family at the bus stop. “These people don’t want handouts. They just know they need to survive. We need to tell them they aren’t alone,” said Bruce.

The Festival of Trees is a multi-day holiday party; you can’t not smile at that,” said Bruce.

“You see the Saratoga area is a tough nut to crack. In this beautiful community, there’s little shown for us to believe that there might be problems under the surface,” said Bruce. “The biggest lesson we can all learn is that the factors that separate ‘those folks’ from you or I are very few.” Despite the challenges that face every charity of service, the small rewards keep the energy moving. When you’ve helped one person pay his or her heating bill or pack their children’s lunch, you’ve changed a life. And, there lies the source of Bruce’s reverberating positivity – acts of kindness that give others strength. One of the biggest acts of kindness is the Saratoga Festival of Trees, the largest fundraiser for the local Catholic Charities branch. “If you asked me how I feel after unloading 200 trees, wreaths and centerpieces, I’d probably only have the breath left to say one word – tired! But, to tell you a secret, that’s a half-truth. In reality, this is a completely rejuvenating experience. The joy it brings to all of our hearts, our minds, our souls…it’s the source of hope that keeps us old folks moving

Caroling by the Girl Scouts around the tree will start at 5:45, then at 6:00, the Honorable Mayor Joanne Yepsen lights the trees and we countdown for the arrival of…

Santa and Mrs. Claus!

They will be arriving with many elves and even Rumple Dumple to the beautiful, hand-made and detailed Santa Cottage that is set up in front of Putnam Market & Putnam Wine, just across from Caroline Street… to usher in the holiday season! While waiting to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus… enjoy free hot chocolate and cookies, donated by the Hungry Spot, Putnam Market and Gaffney’s. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there till 10 pm to give everybody time to stop by and visit! Getting There / Parking: Broadway will close once again from 5:00 to 10:00 from the Route 50 arterial to the Spring Street intersection for the festivities. CDTA, a festival Gold Sponsor, is running FREE shuttle buses every 20 minutes from the Empire State College parking lot at 111 West Avenue on Saratoga Springs’ west side. You can also get the shuttle at the Silver Sponsor, NYRA Oklahoma track (just off Exit 14 of I-87) and the Weible Avenue Skating Rink parking lots on the east side of Saratoga Springs. The shuttles run from 4:30 to 10:30 .

Frosty The Snowman Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul, With a corncob pipe and a button nose. And two eyes made out of coal. Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say, He was made of snow but the children know how he came to life one day.
