Live Like You’re On Vacation is a multifaceted recruitment initiative geared toward tourists who already love visiting Saratoga, the Adirondacks, and Lake George, as well as professionals considering relocation. By featuring the three regions, it showcases the variety of opportunities available to residents in this four-season destination.

“When you live in the Saratoga, Adirondack, and Lake George region, you are truly living like you’re on vacation,” said Todd Shimkus, president, Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. “From historic horse racing to millions of acres of protected forests to the Queen of American lakes, we have all of this – and much more – right in our backyard.”

The campaign is aimed at attracting new talent to the region by providing a glimpse at what living here looks like along with highlighting some of the main attractions that make the region so unique. Local Chambers work collaboratively with employers looking to hire staff from outside of the region.

FARMERS' MARKET SARATOGA

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is an awardwinning, year-round market with an array of locally grown and sourced products.

For 47 years, the Saratoga Farmers’ Market has served as a food hub and community gathering place, offering activities, events, and children’s programs that support the businesses at the market while enhancing the community of Saratoga Springs.

From May to October, the farmers’ market is held at High Rock Park in downtown Saratoga Springs on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Wednesdays, from 3 to 6 p.m. Outdoor markets host up to 80 vendors every Saturday and are held rain or shine under three beautiful pavilions that offer protection from the sun and weather. Market-goers enjoy walking and biking along Saratoga’s paved Greenbelt Trail to the farmers' market, and the City Center’s parking garage offers ample parking options during the busy summer months.

The outdoor markets at High Rock Park offer an unparalleled assortment of fruits, vegetables, herbs, artisan cheese, jams, honey and maple products, artisan goods (clothing, pottery, jewelry), baked goods, meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products (milk and yogurt), flowers, soap and body products, and a variety of ready-to-eat foods. In the spring, local farms have a wide variety of starter plants for gardeners looking to plant established flowers and vegetables.

The farmers’ market moves indoors from November to April to the Wilton Mall food court. The market is open every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There’s nothing better than fresh

local produce in the winter–here in Saratoga Springs, so that you can taste that freshness all year! The winter market is notable for its variety. You’ll find naturally grown winter veggies (including hydroponically grown salad greens and tomatoes), meat, poultry, eggs, cheese, yogurt, milk, honey, jam, pickles, soap and body products, handmade jewelry and clothing, and more! Vendors offer ready-made foods, so you can enjoy a variety of meal options and even grab-and-go snacks while you shop!

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is committed to supporting local businesses, meaning all products sold at the market are produced locally within 50 miles of Saratoga Springs. When you shop at the farmers’ market, you buy unique and quality products that support local communities and the economy.

Local businesses help Saratoga Springs thrive and inspire others to develop their unique businesses. The personality and character reflected in our shopping districts are because of these small businesses. The same is true for the Saratoga Farmers’ Market. There’s more to the Saratoga Farmers’ Market experience than grocery shopping. This lively market is also perfect for meeting friends, connecting with your community, and enjoying entertainment and family-friendly events. Something fun always happens at the market, from chef demonstrations to live music. Stop by and check it out!

For more information, find us online at saratogafarmersmarket.org, where you can sign up for our weekly newsletter, and follow us on Facebook and Instagram @SaratogaFarmersMarket.

CHARLTON

Tucked in the southwest corner of Saratoga County and easily accessible from I-87 and I-90, you’ll be charmed by Charlton’s rural character, historic hamlets, and scenic landscapes. Boasting agriculture as its main industry, a drive or bike tour through Charlton’s rolling hills reveals dairy and horse farms, orchards and farm stands just around the bend. Glimpses of the past abound: in the Historical Society’s museum and one-room schoolhouse, the old general store, and lively Tavern—its former building serving as a stagecoach stop in 1787. Known for its hardy settlers and once-prolific grist mills along the Alplaus Creek, Charlton’s friendly community welcomes visitors to explore its proud heritage.

ROUND LAKE

The charming Village of Round Lake is profoundly tied to its rich cultural past, and still boasts the “campground” feel with its small, close lots. Residences and other structures are arranged in concentric circles radiating from the Round Lake Auditorium, with narrow streets and pedestrian walkways. This creates a hub and spoke pattern – and the secret to “village life” – you know your neighbors!

Shows and events highlighting art, crafts and antiques are regularly held on Village grounds and organ and musical concerts are still given in the Round Lake Auditorium.

The Round Lake Library, though small, continues operation and maintains many books pertaining to Victoriana and Victorian architecture, being particularly useful to those seeking restoration information. Visit the Village website: roundlakevillage.org.

STILLWATER

CODE: 12170

Centrally located between Saratoga Springs and Clifton Park this beautiful and historic community is known as “The Site of the Turning Point of the American Revolution.” The Battle of Freeman’s Farm and the Battle of Bemis Heights were fought here in 1777, paving the way for freedom, and setting the stage for settlement of this community along the banks of the mighty and noble, (but calm) Hudson River. Established in 1788, Stillwater, is one of oldest towns along the Champlain-Hudson corridor. Stillwater offers the “best of everything.” We are a growing community with an excellent school system, friendly neighborhoods, numerous historical sites, trails, parks and of course, Brown’s Beach!

VILLAGE OF VICTORY

In 1684, Colonel Peter Schuyler, Great Uncle of General Schuyler, and six partners, obtained title to the Schuyler Patent, an area of over 168,000 acres that extended roughly 6 miles each side of the Hudson River. The Battle of Saratoga, the Turning Point of the Revolutionary War, was fought on the lands presently occupied by the Village of Victory and the Village of Schuylerville. In the years following the war, flour mills, linen mills, paper mills and sawmills were constructed as well as schools, churches, and businesses.

The Saratoga Battle Monument occupies a prominent place in the northwest portion of the village.

The Victory Mill, which began operating in 1846, made 1.8 million yards of cotton cloth per year. In 1850, it employed 160 men and 209 women. Several companies owned and operated the facility over the years and unfortunately ended up closing its doors in 2000. Future development plans of the site are being developed by the village.

Summer Camp

Greenfield Summer Camp Packs in Outdoor Adventure Accessible to all

When school is out, the kids need entertaining, socialization and time outside. The pressure is on for parents to provide it as affordably as we can. The Town of Greenfield’s summer day camp is a perfect solution, with its morning-only format and a full array of traditional camp activities that kids will love. The camp is held at Maple Ave. Middle School at 515 Maple Ave.

Sign up for all five weeks or those that work for your schedule. Daily drop off is at 8:30 a.m. and pick up is at 12:30 every day but Thursday. New this year, Thursdays are extended days for field trips, with pick up at 2:30 p.m.

Activities include obstacle courses, hiking, gardening, Taekwondo, arts, crafts, as well as organized games and sports clinics to play and learn soccer, flag football, kickball and more. Weekly visitors bring excitement like live wild animal encounters, giant water slides, food trucks along with basketball, yoga and dance instructors. Field trips include train rides, Sky Zone, the Saratoga County Fair, Liberty Ridge and more. There are weekly camp values and awards for things like honesty, inclusion, sharing and helpfulness. Every day ends with a free lunch program and many weeks end with a sweet ice cream treat.

“We pride ourselves on giving these often electronicsfocused kids an action-packed morning touching grass with their peers,” said Town of Greenfield Recreation Director Jennifer Zeisler. “We bring adventure to every age group all while bringing back a focus on important values like kindness, honesty and friendship. I think we have perfected the idea of a community camp with many of the bells and whistles of a faraway camp for a fraction of the cost to parents.”

Students in Kindergarten through ninth grade are welcome and will be supervised with a 2:10 counselor/camper ratio. The camp features 30 trained camp counselors, most of whom once attended this camp themselves. Parents can choose early drop off for an additional cost. Signups open March 3 to Town of Greenfield residents, and March 12 to the public. Scholarships are available.

Cleverdale Gem Home &GARDEN

Welcome to Cleverdale…

Growing up with summers spent on the Lake George waterways leaves an impression of bygone days that beckon you back… summer after summer. Cleverdale, located at the southern base of Lake George, is a small peninsula with quiet waters and endless views! With a family history of summers relished since childhood, Steve Haraden purchased a 1920’s property in 2012 and enjoyed the waters edge with his wife Dee and their combined family of 4 boys. With retirement in sight, they knew it was time to start over and build their dream summer home!

It was a knock down, start over kind of plan.

Some of the challenges facing the original structure were aging electrical, cramped spaces, and mostly, the view was more of the boat house than the lake itself. It was time to start over. The house was torn down and a new set of plans was crafted by Dean Howland and built by his son, Jake, of Howland Construction. With the project starting from scratch, the Haradens knew they wanted help with the interior and exterior selections…they wanted to get everything right…that’s when I was invited to become part of their dream lake home endeavor.

CHANGE THE VIEW

Dean Howland’s approach to the design of the house was magnificent. “The original house sat only 22 feet off the water. If we moved it back, we were able to go a bit higher. This elevated their first-floor view above the boat house, capturing endless views of the lake and the mountains in the distance.” Take a look for yourself…breathtaking!

SATISFYING A NEED WHILE PUTTING A STAMP ON IT.

There are so many details that need to be ironed out when building a home. In this lakeside retreat, I was able to have a little fun adding special details that truly put their stamp on this family home. The impressive main sitting room called for an authentic wood burning fireplace with custom built-ins on either side. Hewed of walnut, the mantle was fashioned to gracefully ease into the face of the side shelves, creating a sense of unity from one end of the room to the next. To ensure a true handcrafted finish, my mill shop, Meunier Woodworks out of Granville NY, added surface joinery at each plane intersection to capture the genuine meaning of craftsmanship for this family home.

In the kitchen, the idea of a subway backsplash was “thrown into the lake” and replaced with a tile shaped like an “H” to add a signature stamp for generations to come. One big request of Dee’s was to have the largest island I could fashion with one piece of stone to anchor the kitchen entertaining! With our cabinets made of a single face frame, it took a bit to bring the island together, including 27”- 30” deep drawers to maximize storage for any gathering! Plate and water glass drawers were utilized in lieu of wall cabinets with a built-in drawer microwave and additional storage for large items under the seated overhang.

In the master suite, the private bathroom was detailed to reflect the needs of the masters of the house. With a long slender space to work with, a hand crafted walnut floating vanity was designed that stretched the length of the room, concluding with a tower for additional storage. The openness below expanded the sense of space. Hand crafted circular mirrors where carefully placed so both Dee and Steve could properly utilize the vanity without compromising symmetry. To add a nautical touch, the streamlined faucets were artfully mounted over glass carved bowls that brought the essence of water to a whole new level. For the shower, a steam option was desired but the space was not large enough to add a full bench. Just our luck, the chimney enclosure for the fireplace below just so happen to reside on the outside wall, adjacent to the shower stall area. This provided just enough room to create a large niche where a lift-up teak bench for two could reside when not in need. With the use of authentic boat seat hinges, luxury was not sacrificed over size.

Down the guest hallway, custom painted oars draw your eye with playful colors, enticing guests to sit atop the crafted oak bench embellished with brass hardware on the drawers and complimented above by nautical wall sconces. Across the hallway, two dramatic, custom crafted mahogany barn doors await the call of laundry duty within.

The guest bedrooms each had their own individual feel. The larger rear room came together with the inspiration of highlighting the long wall with wallpaper. A custom headboard was upholstered in InsideOut faux leather for its durability yet authentic in touch to pair nicely with a leather recliner adjacent to the bed. Another long built-in bench offers a restful view of the lake while an antique Taylor trunk sits just below an original printed map of Lake George by New York Central Lines depicting the railways to the Adirondack Mountains.

In the lower level, which leads to the lake, it was all so important to the Haradens to have a space that would function for gatherings with friends and family. Having a bar complete with all the kitchen amenities was not only a want, but needed, as the hike upstairs to the main kitchen would become wearisome when entertaining. Undercabinet appliances, well hidden from sight, keep the space airy yet function as efficiently as the main kitchen. A speak-easy styled mirror was crafted behind the open shelves to bring depth and drama into this corner bar area.

When I first reviewed the plans for this level, I noted a row of 4 large windows that needed to be broken up to better designate each area. I discussed the idea with the Haradens to use the same stone we selected for the exterior foundation and bring it inside to suggest that possibly they retained the original basement and built up. From there, the sitting area would be defined by angular planks on the wall, divided into sections to create an architectural feature. This singular large space in the lower level now found intimacy without disrupting the open feel they longed for. It also lent itself to incorporating a built-in “loveseat” with shelving, side tables and a little surprise…you see, that loveseat backs up to the staircase leading to the first floor. With the desire for additional sleeping quarters in the lower level, I designed a queen trundle bed that pulls out from beneath the staircase! (See original story for more photos!). “One of our friends dubbed it the Grotto!,” Steve remarked as he was recalling a recent gathering.

THE JEWELS OF A HOME

As I said before, there are so many decisions that go into making a house a home, right down to the final details such as pillows, drapery and cabinet hardware. When I asked the Haradens for their reflection on the finished selections, Dee stated, “It’s a Lake Life Theme, great palette and the look we wanted to achieve. Soothing, welcoming, open with a cozy feel overall. It all flows nicely and every room blends well. It’s a home that is very special to both of us.”
