OBITUARIES

Richard Paul Varley

Saratoga Springs, NY — Richard Paul Varley Passed away on February 12, 2025, at the age of 84 at Equinox Terrace, Manchester, VT. Born in Thomson, NY on March 17, 1940, he was the youngest of 4 children born to the late Dorothy Lang Brooks Varley and George Varley.

Richard, with the consent of his parents, joined the Army at age 17 with his brother, Thomas Varley. They both auditioned as buglers for the Army Band and were accepted and stationed at West Point where they both served for 3 years. His parents then bought him a used piano to repair, and his passion for the instrument inspired him to attend a Piano Technician school in Pennsylvania. On completion of the program,

he moved to Saratoga Springs to start his new business and became known as “Dick Varley the Piano Tuner”.

He honed his craft and grew into one of the most respected piano technicians in the area.

Richard became the concert tuner for SPAC when it opened in 1966 and worked there for over 50 years. He became the concert tuner at the Egg in Albany, and he tuned for the entire music department at Skidmore College. He also had many private customers in and around the Saratoga County area, many of whom became his close friends.

Armed with a witty joke or pun, Richard would banter with the stagehands at SPAC, the professors at Skidmore, the members of the Racing City Chorus where he sang barbershop on Tuesday nights, or with his ballroom dance friends on weekends away with his wife, Donna Bird. He was also an avid piano player and songwriter. Richard was extremely social and made friends everywhere he went. His positive outlook and personable nature were always welcome at any social gathering.

SCHUYLERVILLE —

What do you do with a broken toaster? Or with a lamp that won’t work? Or with a favorite shirt that is ripped? Toss it? No way!

Schuylerville Public Library is organizing a Repair Café 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, March 1.

At Schuylerville Public Library, located at 52 Ferry St., various volunteer repair experts will be available to help make all possible repairs free of charge. Most tools and materials will also be on hand. People visiting the Repair Café are invited to bring along their broken items from home. Limit of two items per person. Small appliances, lamps, hair dryers, radios, clothes, toys... anything that is broken and small enough

The Repair Café concept arose in the Netherlands, in 2009, and was formulated by Martine Postma, at the time an Amsterdam-based journalist/ publicist. In 2010, she started the Repair Café Foundation (see Repaircafe.org). This foundation provides support to local groups around the world wishing to start their own Repair Café. The foundation also supports the Repair Café in the Schuylerville Public Library.

“By repairing instead of tossing, we lessen the strain on our environment,” said Library Director Caitlin Johnson.

Design and Plans Underway at Shepard Park Bandstand and Amphitheater

LAKE GEORGE — In June 2024, an electrical fire destroyed the Shepard Park bandstand.

Within three weeks of the fire, a committee of municipal leaders, presenters, technical engineers, artists, and community members was formed. Meeting weekly or bi-weekly since that time, the committee was tasked with helping inform the design of a new amphitheater and asked to provide diverse perspectives, speak to their experience using the space, and provide a range of

voices in conversations centered around design, functionality, and accessibility.

The Village of Lake George and AJA Architecture recently unveiled the new design plan.

The design for the Shepard Park bandstand and amphitheater features an acoustic-centered design, improved sight-lines to both the stage and the lake, and safer, more accessible seating.

Artists will benefit from high-quality sound and lighting, green room

facilities, and much-needed storage, while key safety upgrades—including lighting improvements in the park, ADA compliant walkways, and wi-fi improvements will enhance the overall experience for all who are visiting the park.

Construction is anticipated to be awarded and begin this summer, with completion in May-June 2026. For more information, go to: lakegeorgearts.org/ shepard-park.

Lifelong Saratoga Springs Resident Gets His Day in The City

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

It was February 1986. Ronald Reagen sat at the resolute desk in the Oval Office, the Space Shuttle Challenger had three weeks earlier met tragedy after it lifted off from Cape Canaveral, and the song “We Are The World” was poised to take home all kinds of awards at the 28th Grammy Awards.

Twenty-six year-old Tony Izzo saw a story in the local newspaper that read: Saratoga Needs Lawyers. He promptly headed to Broadway, met with the mayor and the city attorney, and 10 days later began his first day of work at City Hall.

“Thirty-nine years ago today I walked through that front door, thinking to myself that I had absolutely no idea what to expect,” Izzo recalled during the Feb. 18 meeting of

the City Council, where he was honored for his years of service.

“Here it is, 39 years later, and when I walk through that front door, I still don’t know what to expect that day,” he said, after city Mayor John Safford read a proclamation to name the day in Anthony J. Izzo’s honor.

“Tony is one of the most familiar and most recognized public servants who gives unselfishly of his time and legal talents,” said the mayor, leading the honors at City Hall. “He is one of the least pretentious persons among us, and conducts himself with honestly, thoughtfulness and compassion.”

“You know I write so many of these proclamations for other people and I sit out there in the front row and watch the expressions on their faces,” said Izzo, who has served nearly one dozen mayors during his years of service as legal counsel for the city. “Now, I guess I know what it feels like.”

Saratoga Springs City Council RaceDems Say “We Hope To Appeal”

...continued from front page

Republicans objected to just over 100 of the ballots, and on Feb. 14 Saratoga County State Supreme Court Judge James Walsh released his 12-page decision. Judge Walsh, a Republican, ruled invalid several dozen votes of the ballots that Democrats said showed voter intent for write-in candidate Kuczynski, and which Republicans objected to.

Specific to the ballots ruled invalid: 63 showed the written word Dem, or Democratic, or Democrat, on

an area outside the ballot area designated for the write-in vote; 14 had candidate Kuczynski’s name correctly written in the write-in box, but showed his name also written additionally in other areas of the ballot, and a handful of others depicted discrepancies in either name or in writings on the physical ballot.

Following the judge’s ruling, Republican candidate Marshall was shown to emerge with a margin of victory essentially equal to the number of ballots ruled as invalid. Approximately two dozen undervotes - ballots cast but with no voting machine

discernible candidate preference – were not believed to have been involved in the judge’s ruling, and their status remains not known.

“In a democracy, adherence to rules is fundamental, especially during elections,” the Saratoga Springs Republican Party responded in a statement.

“We have full confidence that Commissioner Marshall will hit the ground running and serve the entire city with dedication and integrity,

making all citizens proud, regardless of how they voted.”

Democrats, however, said they had yet to come to consensus about whether to appeal the judge’s ruling and that a court transcript was requested and review by appellate counsel underway.

“It’s extremely disappointing to see this partisan effort to disenfranchise 90 voters and invalidate their ballots despite absolutely clear voter intent,” interim commissioner

Kuczynski said Feb. 18. “We hope to appeal the judge’s ruling and look forward to the court of appeals protecting every vote of every Saratogian.”

As of Feb. 19, the county Board of Elections had yet to conduct a final canvassing of the ballots; the completion of the adjudication of ballots and an understanding of whether or not an appeal will be conducted is necessary before the election may be officially certified.

New Saratoga Vet Emphasizes Fear-Free Practices and Independent Ownership

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

It might be hard to believe, but your local vet could be owned by the same company that makes Skittles.

For the past few decades, the candy company Mars has been adding veterinary businesses to its portfolio.

Today, according to Fortune Magazine, Mars is the biggest vet provider in America. The money-making venture has certainly boosted Mars’ bottom line, but it may also result in local vets lacking in personalized care.

That’s not the case, however, with the independently-owned Cornerstone Veterinary Hospital, which is softlaunching its second location in Saratoga Springs next week.

“Larger corporations view it as a money-making opportunity,” said Cornerstone’s Dr. Alan Knott. “That’s not why we got into veterinary medicine. We got into veterinary medicine to really help patients and help clients. That’s our primary goal.”

Cornerstone was founded by Drs. Alan and Lisa Knott in Clifton Park nearly a decade ago. Its flagship location has become so popular that a second outpost became necessary.

“We’re about at capacity now,” Dr. Alan said of his Clifton Park office, “so we knew we wanted to be able to expand and be able to offer veterinary services to other areas, and doing things in Saratoga was kind of that ideal location.”

In addition to many existing clients traveling to Clifton Park from the Saratoga area, it didn’t hurt that Dr. Dayna Jodzio, who will be spearheading the new location,

is herself a Spa City resident.

Aside from being a familyowned practice, Cornerstone also emphasizes its Fear-Free Certification, which focuses on the emotional well-being of animals. Dr. Lisa said studies have shown that fear-free practices can help animals heal faster by minimizing stress.

To achieve Fear-Free Certification, all staff members must complete a ninehour continuing education course. Then, the clinic must

demonstrate that they have a list of various fear-free protocols in place.

“[Fear-Free] has only been around for less than ten years and we’ve been vets for about twenty,” Dr. Lisa said, “so we’ve seen the before, how it used to be done, and the after, and we can see a huge difference in how the animals act when they come in, how happy the owners are when they leave, and also the employees and team members; it makes a

difference for them in being more satisfied in their jobs.”

Fear-Free practices include the use of calming pheromones, soothing music, treats, toys, and positive reinforcement to make each animal’s visit as hassle-free as possible.

The Cornerstone Veterinary Hospital of Saratoga Springs is currently accepting new patients prior to its official ribbon-cutting scheduled for Feb. 24.

Sustainable Development Breaks Ground in Saratoga Springs

SARATOGA SPRINGS

— The Phinney Design Group announced last week the groundbreaking of a sustainable residential development in Saratoga Springs that aims to set “a new benchmark for ecofriendly living.”

The new Riley Farms development is designed to integrate green technology, such as solar energy, geothermal heating and cooling, and advanced clean air systems, to create energy-efficient homes on a 30-acre nature preserve. Each home in the development will be designed with passive solar principles, highperformance insulation, and responsibly-sourced materials.

“This project is not just about building homes; it’s about staying true to our principles and creating a future where sustainable living is the standard, not the exception,” said Mike Phinney, founding principal architect at Phinney Design Group, in a news release.

“I didn’t want just another cookie cutter development,” said Riley Farms Owner and Developer Kenneth Scott. “We wanted to create a community of unique homes, as works of art.”

With construction already underway, the first homes are expected to be move-in ready by late 2025 or early 2026.

For more information about the project, visit https:// rileyfarm.homes/.

The winter blues is legit; all you have to do is google it and read the case studies!

While there are many ways to combat the ‘winter blues’, the market can be a fabulous local tool to help accomplish some of the recommended doldrum fighters that are perfect to put into action Mid-February in the northeast;

* Healthy eating: the market is filled with fresh, local produced foods and goods. It’s a great place to shop and learn about locally sourced products. Each week the market shares a recipe and you can discover new and previous recipes at saratogafarmersmarket.org

* Unplug and Connect: Turn off the phone, the television, the computer and walk the market at your leisure while visiting with the vendors. They are a wealth of knowledge and can share many tips, tricks, and answer your questions about their production processes, etc.

If you love the market and want to connect further, while helping the community, the market is always in search of volunteers. If you’d like to volunteer please email manager@ saratogafarmersmarket.org.

This Saturday is the last day for kids to play I-SPY at the market and earn produce coins. Playing I-SPY makes the market even more fun for kids, helps them to identify fresh, local goods and helps them to ‘learn to earn’ which then can be applied to their shopping experience. You can use the game in this article or visit saratogafarmersmarket.org to print a copy. After you’ve played, simply hand in the I-spy at

the market staff table to receive produce coins. The table is located near the entrance of the mall in the food court at Wilton Mall, in front of the green marble wall.

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is currently open Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., November through April at Wilton Mall Food Court; accessible from the mall entrance across from BJs. The CDTA’s 450 (from Schenectady) and 452 (from Skidmore College via downtown Saratoga) run to the Mall hourly Saturday mornings.

mom, they always bring up the famous “two weeks of Pizza” as she kept making different variations of his pizza to finally nail it. Please understand that not one of her renditions were not loved by the young Reardon’s. If I hear anyone say the words: “How’s that?”, I think of her. We were very early versions of that on-line guy “one bite, everybody knows the rules.” My wife Paula has taken up my mom’s mantra and makes awesome Pizza. One of the results of Paula’s pizza is the love that she puts into making it, that is felt and returned by all. We have tinkered with it over the years and I think Paula’s pizza is now perfect. That’s the thing about pizza; it’s a personal taste type of food. The way I like it might be different than the way someone else likes it and that’s ok.

If you have ever made your own pizza at home, then you’ll know where the best pizza in town is. We all have our own version of what the best pizza is and the best person to make it is you. To begin making your great pizza you should pick out a great stone.

A pizza stone is one of the keys to making a perfect pizza. The science behind pizza stones is relatively simple: the stone conducts and holds heat, which keeps the oven temperature steady even when a cold ingredient (such as an uncooked pizza) is introduced. This not only helps the pizza cook more evenly, but also allows the bottom to get crisp. The trick to a crispy pizza is to heat the stone in the oven prior to putting your prepared pizza on it.

Learning how to clean a pizza stone correctly can help it

“HOW’S THAT?”

Hello my Foodie Friends!

When someone asks you what’s your favorite food, what is your answer? My answer has always been PIZZA! Growing up in New Haven County, Connecticut we had an expectation of quality for our Apizza (“ah’beetz”) Pies. It was usually on Friday night that my dad would come home from work in New Haven with a Pepe’s Apizza. There were five drooling children that would be out of minds with anticipation. This reception got my Mom’s Sicilian competitive juices flowing! She was determined to match the great Frank Pepe. To this day when my family reminisces about my

last a long time and produce mouth-watering pizzas. The one small problem: How do you remove all that baked-on cheese and grease once you’re done devouring your culinary masterpiece? Follow these steps to clean a pizza stone so it lasts for many years to come. It’s best to clean a pizza stone every time it’s used—a quick wipe works. This makes it easier to remove stuck-on food and cheese. And it helps avoid having to deep clean your stone as often. Let your stone cool down before removing it from the oven.

The Emile Henry Pizza Stones are also another option. The Emile Henry Pizza Stone makes brick-oven style pizzas in ovens and on grills. It heats up in just 15 minutes, cleans easily, it’s light weight and of course it’s made in France.

The Pizza Stone is made of all natural materials and is manufactured using Emile Henry’s proprietary Flame® technology. The Pizza Stone can withstand high oven temperatures.

popular way of making pizza. The pizza steel is like a pizza stone but is made of steel that offer a temperature conduit that helps make a crisp crust. Like the pizza stone, you will want to heat up the steel prior to putting your pizza creation on it to cook. Whichever method you choose, have fun making pizza. Get creative with your pizza and make lasting memories.

I gave you the Margherita recipe because this is a good place to start making a great pizza and you can easily add or subtract your ingredients! I also like the name. Stop in to Compliments to the Chef, Your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery Store, located at 33 Railroad Place and pick one up the tools you need for your pizza creations before they are all gone.

If you do make your own pizza, please stop by with a slice for me and announce “How’s that?”

The co-directors of the production are Dianne O’Neill and J. Scala. The cast of Hamlet includes faces both familiar and brand new to Home Made Theater audiences.

In addition to six public performances, there will be two private matinees for school groups. More than 225 high school students from Ballston Spa, Schuylerville, and other schools will attend a performance followed by a Q &

A with the directors, some of the production staff, and the cast.

Performances of Hamlet begin on Friday, Feb. 28 and end on Sunday, March 9. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7 p.m. and Sunday performances are at 2 p.m. The play will be performed in the Saratoga Music Hall, in the Saratoga Springs City Hall building at 474 Broadway.

SARATOGA SPRINGS—

At 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, the Arthur Zankel Music Center at Skidmore College will present the world premiere of “Trill 101,” a groundbreaking multidisciplinary performance by Brooklyn-based composer, vocalist, and multiinstrumentalist Melanie Charles and her Make Jazz Trill Again (MJTA) collective.

The free public concert is the culmination of a year-long artistic collaboration between Charles, her band, and Skidmore students across music, dance, and the humanities.

The March 1 premiere

will feature Charles and her collaborators — Zacchaeus Paul (keys), Rogerst Charles (saxophone), Barry Stephenson (bass), Bendji Allonce (percussion), and Diego Ramirez (drums) — alongside Skidmore student singers, musicians, and dancers. Their collective performance will blend original compositions with a richly layered medley of Afro-diasporic rhythms and Black spirituals, including “Deep River.”

Adding to the experience, video interludes produced by the Troy-based creative agency Collectiveffort will provide a

behind-the-scenes look at the creative process, showcasing the student-driven workshops, jam sessions, and mentorship moments that shaped the project.

Charles is a Brooklynbased composer, singer, flutist, and multi-instrumentalist known for her innovative fusion of jazz, soul, and Haitian roots music. Her work reimagines jazz for contemporary audiences while uplifting marginalized voices. Charles first introduced MJTA to Skidmore in February 2024. Big-Budget Belmont: Fans Incur Steep

SARATOGA SPRINGS

— The increase of Belmont Stakes Day general admission tickets from $50 to $75 wasn’t the only price hike racing fans experienced last week when tickets went on sale to the general public.

Many Belmont Stakes Day (Saturday, June 7) reserved seats were only available as resale tickets, with some costing thousands of dollars. Two resale Clubhouse seats, for example, were listed at $3,562 apiece when the general sale began on Feb. 13. A number of resale grandstand seats in various sections were priced in excess of $1,000. A ten-person Easy Goer table was priced for resale at more than $500 per person.

Racing fans took to social media to express their frustration, telling the New York Racing Association (NYRA), “it’s shocking to see what you are attempting to charge this year” and “the whole ticketing process is unreal…everything is sold within one minute and already being resold at a higher price?”

Last year, NYRA reported that 120,028 people attended the four-day racing festival in Saratoga, with a sold-out crowd of 50,000 attending Belmont Stakes Day.

Sophomore Saint Smashes School Scoring Record

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Saratoga Central Catholic varsity girls basketball player Sophia Ryan netted an eye-popping 46 points against Hoosick Falls last Friday, setting an all-time school scoring record. The previous record of 38 points was set by Ryan last year, when she was only a freshman.

Ryan added 8 rebounds and 6 steals to her point total in the record-breaking game. Fellow sophomore Addison Whitbeck had a double-double (17 points and 11 rebounds) in the 78-46 win over Hoosick.

Ryan has been a high-scoring asset to the Saints throughout the year, notching 26 points on Feb. 10, 25 on Jan. 30, 26 on Jan. 28, 21 on Jan. 15, and 30 on Jan. 13.

Saratoga Ski Teams Capture Section 2 Titles

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

For some, the slopes of Gore Mountain in the Adirondacks are a fearsome sight to behold. But for Saratoga Springs High School skiers, the

towering peak was the site of championship victories.

The Blue Streaks boys Alpine ski team won the Section 2 title last week, with three of their competitors finishing in the top 10 of both the slalom and the giant slalom.

Not to be outdone, the girls Nordic ski team also captured

a sectional championship, led by a second-place finish by Anna Yarsevich and top-five finishes from Emma Murray and Sophia Murray.

Both boys and girls who qualified will be back at Gore Mountain next Monday for the state championships.

Saints Fall Short in Wasaren League Championship

MECHANICVILLE —

After a stellar season, the Saratoga Central Catholic boys basketball team came up short against Hoosick Falls in the Wasaren League Championship last Saturday, 55 to 46.

The tough loss came in the wake of the Saints beating Hoosick the prior week, 36 to 34. In that regular season

contest, Spa Catholic battled back from a double-digit deficit. Tyler Hicks led the Saints with 18 points, while David Redgrave added 11.

The league championship loss was only the second on the year for the Saints, who fell to a 18-2 record overall. The boys will next participate in the Class C sectional tournament, where they’ll be the No. 3 seed and face Lake George on Feb. 25.

The title victory was Hoosick’s first since 2019.

Brookhaven Winter Park Hosting Ladies

Nordic Ski Lesson and Lunch Event

PORTER CORNERS — A

Nordic skiing “lesson and lunch” program for women will be held at the Brookhaven Winter Park on March 2 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Instructors will provide a one-hour lesson to women grouped by experience level. Then a lunch at the View Restaurant will follow. The $40 resident/$48 non-resident fee includes equipment rental, lunch, and a beverage. After lunch, ladies are welcome to ski for the afternoon at their leisure. Those not interested in Nordic

skiing may choose to snowshoe instead. The event is modeled after Greenfield’s golf “lesson & lunch” for women, held multiple times last summer.

Brookhaven Winter Park is the Town of Greenfield’s free Nordic ski and snowshoe park. This year the park added a winter rental and gift shop. Guests may rent both Nordic skis or snowshoes on a first-come, firstserve basis. The park features seven cross-country trails and two snowshoe loops.

To register for the event, visit greenfieldny.org.

Against William Smith, the Thoroughbreds were led by seniors Cassie Davidson and Sarah Chambers, who both scored 15 points. The pair also combined for 16 rebounds, 8 steals, and 3 assists. The victory extended Skidmore’s winning

streak against William Smith to 9 straight.

At RIT, the Thoroughbreds had five players in double figures, led by Chambers with 13 points, 8 boards, 4 assists, and 2 blocks.

2025 is the fourth year in a row that Skidmore has qualified for the playoffs. The team will finish its regular season on Feb. 22 at home against St. Lawrence and Clarkson. The game is the annual Big Green Scream event, as well as Senior Day.

The Liberty League Tournament will begin on Feb. 25.

Racers Wrap Up Regular Season on Sunday

SARATOGA SPRINGS

— The Saratoga Racers of the American Basketball Association (ABA) will wrap up their regular season this Sunday at home against the New Hampshire Kingz at 3 p.m. All of the Racers’ home games are played at Saratoga Central Catholic on Broadway.

Saratoga’s penultimate

game will be the prior day, Feb. 22, on the road against the Connecticut Surge. Their game against the Binghamton Bulldogs on Feb. 16 was cancelled due to the snowstorm.

The 12-6 Racers are currently #21 in the ABA’s national rankings and are the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference White Division. They’re expected to begin competing in single-elimination playoff games in early March.
