The action of rowing utilizes the full body to power through.

One’s lower extremities are the

driving force that gives a rower their momentum. French, who was born without legs, never let that stop him from pursuing competitive sports.

"It hasn't really affected me.

My parents have kind of been really supportive of everything throughout the years so that helped a lot,” said French.

Who: Katelyn Ginley Where: Union and East Ave. Q. What are you doing out here today?

Q. What do you like about this job?

A. I manage the King's Tavern parking lot, so I hire a bunch of high school kids, some older than me, some younger to work as parking attendants... it's usually pretty fun. The track has been pretty slow so far, but today it's picking up so it's nice.

A. I really love this job. I get to be my own boss and be in charge and it teaches you a lot of responsibility.

Q. How did you get this job?

A. I have done this for the last three summers. We rent the lot from Stewarts.

Q. You mentioned that you play your guitar on your downtime, and sometimes people tip you.

What songs have you been playing?

A. This is the first time I've been singing this season...I play a lot of Johnny Cash and Tom Petty, and classics that I think people would want to hear.

Heidi West, owner of Lifestyles and Caroline and Main, both stores on Broadway, has opened a new store called Union Hall on the third corner of the same area of Broadway.

Union Hall is a men’s clothing store that West opened because “one of the things that I kept hearing was that they wanted their own space. They don’t want to shop in a store where there’s also women’s clothing, so I decided that when this space became open to create, based on all the feedback, exactly what the men wanted, which was a place to call their own.”

On day one of Union Hall’s soft launch this past Friday, July 19, several customers were already meandering in and out of the store almost constantly, some stopping to talk to the store’s employees.

“I’m floored by the amount of support,” West said. “You kind of know that it’s out there, but then when you open a new business people really flood to support you, and I’m just really touched by that.

A lot of my regulars and a lot of the husbands of my regular clients, they’re all really showing up and supporting us, so that’s great.”

As for why she chose the new just over 1,000 square-foot location over others, she said “as you probably know, locations in Saratoga are hard to come by.

That, combined with timing, combined with proximately to

my other two locations. So I have three out of the four corners now and the logistics of that just makes it a lot easier, because in the back of Lifestyles I have a huge bank of offices, that’s where production and everything happens.”

In addition to the various clothing choices, West said that the new location has “a tasting bar, we have a flat screen TV here, some books.”

She added that for the tasting bar, “I don’t sell alcohol, it’s just samples. We have two kegs that we tap, we change those out monthly.”

West also said that she always strives to be eco-friendly in her materials, such as how the clothing hangers in the store are made of sugarcane, and the water bottles in the refrigerator beneath the tasting bar use a paper-based bottle and a plant-based cap.

“This is an area for guys to be comfortable, to come hang out, to settle in, to make shopping fun again,” she said. “Because what I also hear is ‘I don’t like to shop,’ the guys say that a lot, so I’m like ‘what would make that less painful?’ having great staff, having great service.”

West said that for the grand opening on Aug. 2, “We’re going to be creating a lounge space out in front of the store, and we’re going to have an antique truck with a wooden flatbed that we’re going to have baskets for the giveaways, we’re going to have branded T-shirts, and our famous six pack, which is going to have a T-shirt and a cap and

possibly a beer or two, that’s going to be a gift with purchase.”

Additionally, “we’re also carrying these ‘sili-pints,’ which are silicon pint glasses. So we’re going to have a bunch of giveaways, we’re going to of course have our beer on tap for tastings,” among other celebrations.

For the future, West gave several ways that she intends to expand and improve Union Hall.

First, getting the right mix of goods for the store’s clients.

“Our biggest goal is to get the

store filled with exactly what our clients want and need,” West said.

She added “it takes time to get that mix. You have to listen, then veer in a direction, listen, see what they want, veer in that direction, so I’ve learned over time that it just takes time to get that mix right where you want it, so I’m excited to put that together for the clients.”

Second, pop-up shops in places like the track, which she has previously done with the first store, Lifestyles. “I am going to start to push out into events through

Union Hall as well, so that’ll be fun to kind of investigate.”

Finally, giving back to the community via various charities. “I always link up with charities and we have charity events. So I’m looking to work with the Whispering Angels, we’re going to talk to Saratoga Warhorse,” she said.

But for the short term, West seemed content with Union Hall’s first day. She said “right now I’m just glad the door is open and people are coming in. I just might need a little vacation next week!”

Erik A. Pagan, 45, of Saratoga Springs, pleaded July 12 to criminal purchase or disposal of a weapon, and attempted assault. All charges are felonies. Sentencing Sept. 27.

POLICE Shane Wilbur, 25, of Wilton, was charged July 13 with criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth-degree, a misdemeanor, and possession of a forged instrument in the second-degree, a felony.

On July 13-14, the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office marine patrol unit along with marine patrols from the New York State Park Police and the New York State Department of

Environmental Conservation Police participated in a boater safety initiative on Saratoga Lake. The purpose of the initiative was to promote safe boating, target impaired boaters and target aggressive and reckless operation of vessels.

As a result of the initiative, a total of 23 navigation citations were issued for a variety of safety, speed and equipment violations. One person was also cited for misdemeanor reckless operation of a vessel.

Gabrielle Sullivan, 22, of Ballston Lake, was charged July 14 with disorderly conduct and assault with intent to cause injury to officer, related to an incident that occurred on Caroline Street.

Robert Faith, 34, of Greenfield Center, was charged July 15 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and speeding.

Jeffrey Bishop, 27, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 15 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, operating an unregistered vehicle, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of marijuana.

LILLIAN RUSSELL & DIAMOND JIM BRADY

The romance and glamour of Saratoga Springs in the summer season during the 1800’s is told in many stories. One of the most renowned stories of a man and woman in this time period is that of the relationship between millionaire Diamond Jim Brady and theater starlet, Lillian Russell. Many would call this a love story, but was it?

In a time period without motion pictures and television the heart throbs of the country were developed on the theater stage. Lillian Russell rose to prominence quickly as a beautiful young actress with the foremost singing voice of the day.

Lillian was born Louise Leonard in Clinton Iowa in 1860 and lived her early years in Chicago. At age 18 she moved to NYC with her mother after her parents divorced. She studied music and dance and at age 19 she was hired by producer Tony Pastor to perform in the comic opera H.M.S. Pinafore. She was an overnight success and soon began a tour of Europe and the United States, performing other operas with his troupe.

James Brady was born in NYC on August 12, 1856 and began his work experience in hotels but soon went to work for the N.Y. Central Railroad. At the age of 21 Brady had risen to the position of Chief Assistant to the General Manager of the N.Y. Central. At age 23, Brady took his knowledge of railroads to work for the rail equipment company, Manning, Maxwell and Moore as a salesman.

He had tremendous success in sales and became a millionaire with the nick name “Diamond Jim” because of his many pieces of jewelry composed of diamonds and other jewels. Jim earned millions as a salesman and made sure people saw his wealth. At the time of his death he had over 20,000 diamonds and 6,000 other

precious jewels. His favorite ring contained a 25.5 carat diamond.

Jim was a regular theater goer and quickly became fascinated with the young Lillian Russell. Every opening night Lillian received from him a large bouquet of flowers usually with a piece of jewelry placed in the arrangement with a note from her biggest admirer. This friendly relationship went on for over 20 years both in and out of the theater. Lillian and Jim were seen often together at social events or in restaurants. As you might imagine the rumor mills went to work and the common gossip of the day was that the two must be in a torrid romantic relationship since they were seen together so much. The truth was that Jim was never married while Lillian had married four times and always remained friends with Brady. That continued friendship fueled the daily gossip on the front porches of the grand hotels that there must be a romantic connection.

Lillian and Jim both came to the city numerous summers and enjoyed the social life of the day.

Lillian was seen daily walking Broadway or riding in her beautiful Victoria carriage drawn by a pair of matched black hoses with white doeskin harnesses. Once Richard Canfield opened his famed restaurant in the Casino, Lillian dined there nightly enjoying her favorites of sweet corn and crepes suzette always prepared table side by the famous chef Jean Columbin.

Lillian introduced Diamond Jim to the new craze of bicycle riding. Diamond Jim never did anything half way and ordered twelve bicycles to be delivered to him for use. One of the bicycles was modified to have silver plated spokes and a gold-plated frame with diamonds and emeralds mounted on the handle bar and frame area. This gift from Jim to Lillian cost $1,900 at that time.

regular at the racetrack she was always surrounded by admirers.

As she aged, her position as the most beautiful performer in the country was being challenged by younger performers. Louise Montague was one of those young challengers. One summer Louise appeared at the racetrack and sat relatively close to Lillian each day. Both attracted attention and as they bet on the horses in each race, a friendly rivalry developed to see who would pick the most winners during the season.

The onlookers kept track of the number of wins for each woman and daily discussions of which woman would ultimately win followed. Louise was once asked about Lillian’s skill at predicting winners and Louise was heard to say that “she thought that Lillian closed her eyes and stuck the program with a hat pin to pick the winner”. This statement caused the rivalry to heat up. When the last day of racing began both women were tied with number of wins. At the end of the last race, Lillian was pronounced the ultimate winner. Lillian threw a large party that night and invited Louise to attend along with many other socialites. When Louise

arrived, she brought her host a gift in the traditional pale blue color of the Tiffany Company. When Lillian opened it, she found a beautiful three prong silver plated fish fork. When Lillian thanked Louise, Louise told her “Now you can use the fork to pick win, place and show everyday next year”.

At the end of the 1890’s Lillian was between marriages and in a relationship with Jesse Lewisohn and Jim was in a long-term relationship with a woman named Edna McCauley. After years of the four being together Jesse fell in love with Edna and they married, leaving Jim and Lillian to console each other. At that point Jim proposed marriage to Lillian in her NYC home and she refused saying” We make better friends than husband and wife”. They remained friends until Jim’s death at age 60.

Lillian lived on and passed away at the age of 61 in 1922.

The story of Lillian Russell and Diamond Jim Brady has many more chapters, but I feel they only paint a picture of long-time friendship and not the torrid romance that most people of the time wanted. Their true love affair at the spa was not with each other but with the city of Saratoga Springs.

PROSPERITY PARTNERSHIP REVEALS SARATOGA’S PROSPERITY Photos by Kevin Matyi.

SARATOGA — This past Tuesday, July 23, the Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership held its latest quarterly economic index luncheon at Saratoga National on Union Avenue.

The luncheons’ purpose is to disseminate information about a specific industry in Saratoga County. This time, the information was focused on the Warehouse and Logistics industries.

According to a press release given at the event, the various logistics companies in Saratoga

employ nearly 2,000 people, up 21% since 2001, and generate $166 million per year.

The event started with Marty Vanags, president of the Partnership, thanking various sponsors, like the Adirondack Trust Company and Schenectady County Community College, before awarding this year’s title of Economist of the Year to Michael Kelly.

According to Kelly’s profile, provided at the luncheon, he is the Business Development Manager for Logistics One, which provides “3rd party warehousing, logistics and transportation solutions to manufacturers, retailers and distributors.”

The profile says that “Mike’s strength is his ability to see both the big picture and the finite details involved in the complex systems that comprise distribution networks. His passion is to find and partner with companies to become an extension of their operations by creating and offering solutions to maximize the efficiency of their businesses.”

Vanags said that Kelly won the title due to his accurate predictions about several economic trends, including the Saratoga County unemployment rate and the Dow Jones Industrial average.

After the award, the presentation moved into a brief lunch, then to the various statistics about Saratoga County’s warehouse and logistics businesses.

During his presentation, Vanags showed that there were 595 logistics and warehouse companies in the capital region, and that 97 of them were located in Saratoga county.

Afterward, he broke down the various answers to the Pulse survey that the Partnership had sent out to the warehouse and logistics companies in Saratoga.

Of the respondents, most had 50 employees or fewer, with three having over 300 employees and over 50% of the companies stating that they employ between one and 10 part-time employees and around a third hiring some number of seasonal workers.

Almost two-thirds of the companies said that they own their own transportation, while the respondents were split evenly on whether they current use thirdparty companies for logistics, although all respondents said that logistics was important to them to some level, with over half saying that it was critically important.

As for problems currently facing the industry, slightly over half said that two major issues are the “inability to attract and retain a qualified hourly workforce” and “insufficient space for inventory and/or operations.”

After Vanags finished, Tim Feemster, CEO and Managing Principal of Foremost Quality Logistics, led the next presentation.

According to his biography, Feemster has over 40 years of experience and “has been responsible for economic development strategy consulting, building construction management, transportation and warehouse operations; real estate site selection; network optimization; strategic planning; marketing; inventory planning and deployment; lean systems and quality management; and private fleet management.”

He started his presentation by telling those in attendance that while Vanags had focused on Saratoga, he was going to take a more national and international viewpoint.

After Feemster’s presentation, Vanags transitioned to the final part of the luncheon, a panel with Kelly, Feemster and Joshua Spiegel, Chief Financial Officer for Trans-Border Global Freight Systems, Inc. According to the provided biography, Spiegel “has industry experience spanning nearly 30 years and has dealt with nearly every aspect of the logistics industry.”

The panelists discussed two questions from Vanags, one on how logistics will change in the next 10 years and the other on what the single biggest challenge in logistics is, and one question from the audience about how they promote a diverse workplace, especially with

regard to women and millennials.

The panelists seemed to be in agreement on the Vanags’s second question, with both Kelly and Spiegel talking about how difficult it was to find and hold on to qualified workers.

“I can’t remember the last time someone walked into our office, ready to work,” Spiegel said.

For Vanags’ first question, Kelly said that there were drastic changes in the supply chain and that smaller companies would likely need to outsource their transportation in order to keep up.

Spiegel said that due to the customer demand for next day delivery, companies would likely need to go back to keeping inventory on hand, or they would be too slow to be competitive.

After the panel, the luncheon ended somewhat abruptly, due to the event already being past the 1 p.m. deadline that was listed in the agenda.

We Remember You, Marylou Marylou Whitney,

whose philanthropic initiatives and contributions to racing earned her the nicknames "Queen of Saratoga" and "Grand Dame of Saratoga" among other honors, died Friday, July 19, at her Cady Hill home in Saratoga Springs. She was 93.

Born Marie Louise Schroeder on Dec. 24, 1925, Mrs. Whitney grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. The daughter of Harry Schroeder, an accountant who had attended law school with Harry Truman, and mother Marie Jean, Mrs. Whitney had an active childhood in which she was a member of Troop 44 of the Girl Scouts of America.

After graduating Southwest High School, she attended the University of Iowa for a time before working as an actress, appearing in movies and television shows. Her work in radio also brought her acclaim, highlighted by the show "Private Smiles" on KCKN, catering to servicemembers during World War II. For seven decades, Whitney was among the most successful owners in thoroughbred racing. She married Cornelius Vanderbilt "Sonny" Whitney, one of the founders of the National Museum of Racing and Pan American Airlines, respectively, in 1958. Their stable embarked on a winning tradition, with Tompion capturing the Travers in 1960 and Chompion winning the Mid-Summer Derby in 1968.

The family's contributions to racing went beyond trips to the winner's circle. In the 1970s, the Whitneys helped convince the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) to keep Saratoga Race Course open as a viable part of its racing calendar at a time when wagering and attendance sagged. Their efforts and long-term vision continue to benefit racing, with the Saratoga meet attracting more than one million fans annually.

Beyond racing, the Whitneys made a huge impact in the Saratoga community, founding the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), which opened in 1966 and continues to host world-class musical and dance performances to this day, helping turn Saratoga into a true summer destination for tourists.

Following C.V. Whitney's death in 1992 at age 93, Mrs. Whitney opened her own stable, which garnered industrywide acclaim with her Eton blue and brown silks quickly becoming synonymous with racing excellence.

In 1994, Mrs. Whitney met John Hendrickson, who was working as an aide to Alaska's then-governor Wally Hickel. They married in Alaska in 1997, and the couple continued their philanthropic endeavors, serving as founding members of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and as founders of the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

Mrs. Whitney continued to make her mark beyond the scope of the racetrack itself, facilitating with her husband, John, the Saratoga Backstretch Appreciation program to help stable workers who are away from home during NYRA's Saratoga summer meet.

In 2003, Bird Town, trained by Nick Zito, made Whitney the first woman in 80 years to own and breed a Kentucky Oaks winner when she captured the "Lillies for the Fillies." Mrs. Whitney and Zito continued to make history in 2004 when Birdstone won the Belmont Stakes, ending Smarty Jones's Triple Crown bid, and then winning the Travers just before a massive rainstorm pelted Saratoga. In all, Marylou Whitney Stables earned nine graded stakes victories and campaigned more than 190 winners from 2000-2019.

As an indelible part of Saratoga's history, the Whitney legacy can be seen all over the City of Saratoga Springs, including along famed Union Avenue outside of Congress Park where in 2015 Mrs. Whitney and Mr. Hendrickson gifted a statue of Native Dancer that has become a landmark at the start of the street where the famed racetrack sits. That same year, NYRA enshrined Mrs. Whitney in the Saratoga Walk of Fame, where the most legendary trainers, jockeys and owners in the Spa's rich history are honored.

She is survived by her husband John Hendrickson and her five children, Louise "M'Lou," Frank "Hobbs," Henry "Hank," Heather and Cornelia.

Jockey Autograph Session at Saratoga Race Course Saturday SARATOGA SPRINGS — The New York Racing Association will unite with racetracks across the country as part of the Permanently Disabled Jockeys' Fund (PDJF) Awareness Day Across America at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, July 27.

The day's events will include a special meet and greet and autograph session. Riders from

the Saratoga jockey colony will sign autographs on the Jockey Silks Room Porch from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. with a suggested donation to PDJF. Fans who donate $5 to PDJF will receive a commemorative "Riders Up!" poster, while supplies last, and will be entered to win a framed limited edition "150 Years of Racing at Saratoga" print.

The Community Outreach Booth will host PDJF in honor of the day-long celebration at Saratoga Race Course. Fans are encouraged to visit the booth, which is located on the Jockey Silks Room Porch, to learn more about the not-forprofit organization's mission to provide financial assistance to former jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries.

The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund mission is to promote awareness of the needs of permanently disabled jockeys through public advocacy; to provide financial support to permanently disabled jockeys to help defray everyday expenses associated with living with a catastrophic injury; to provide financial support and assistance in obtaining medical coverage for permanently disabled

jockeys; and to promote medical research dedicated to reducing catastrophic injuries within the horse racing industry.

The 2019 summer meet at Saratoga Race Course will continue through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2. Racing at Saratoga Race Course is held five days a week, Wednesdays through Sundays.

Closing week will run Wednesday, Aug. 28 through Labor Day.

“Celebrating Family” Immigrant Stories Series Continues SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Immigration Coalition hosts “Celebrating Family,” 6:45 p.m. – 8:15 p.m.

Tuesday July 30, from, at Caffe Lena, 47 Phila St. Immigrant members of the local communities will share stories, songs, photographs and artwork reflecting memories of family life, both here and in their countries of origin.

“Celebrating Family” is this summer’s installment of the Immigrant Stories: In Their Own Words series and will high-light immigrants’ experiences from the

context of family. Prompts posed to participants include questions concerning favorite relatives, communities of origin, family traditions, and significant events, good or bad, that impacted their lives.

In acknowledgment of the Saratoga Race Course backstretch immigrant community, and the often unseen yet significant role they play in Saratoga Springs, individuals who are connected or have had some connection with the backstretch and track have been invited to participate.

“Celebrating Family” is free of charge and open to the public.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saturday, August 3, The Children’s Museum at Saratoga will host their annual Big Truck Day at Maple Avenue Middle School for the 10th year.

“It’s a large community event designed for young children and their families from throughout the region,” said Sarah Smith Syden, the Executive Director of The Children’s Museum at Saratoga.

Beginning at 9 a.m. children and their parents get to

experience over 30 different large vehicles up close and personal.

Vehicle staff and drivers will guide participates through tours and answer questions about the vehicles’ operations and uses.

"It's a great community event.

It's a fundraiser to support the museum and all the great work that we do here,” said Smith Syden.

Tickets to the event are $5 for children and $2 for adults. There will also be food vendors and many activities for entertainment throughout the day.

“It’s certainly designed to really bring out the kid in everybody.

While it is designed for kids, parents definitely have fun as well,” said Smith Syden. “It’s an opportunity to use your imagination - imagine what it would be like to be one of those drivers to get an up-close tour.”

Participants will get the opportunity to honk the horns of these massive automobiles, including fire trucks, dump trucks and a helicopter, (with the exception of the 9 to 10 a.m. hour block, which will be hornless).

Tickets can be purchased online and at the event. The rain date is the following Saturday, August 10.

SUNY Empire Students Volunteer in the Rebuilding and Recovery of Puerto Rico in the Aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria

SARATOGA SPRINGS — This summer, SUNY Empire State College graduate and undergraduate students have volunteered to participate with “NY Stands with Puerto Rico Recovery and Rebuilding Initiative,” a collaboration of labor, nonprofit, philanthropic and

academic partners, established by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.

Two students are working with a group from Monroe Community College, and six have returned to Orocovis, Puerto Rico this past June, where the first cohort of SUNY Empire students volunteered in 2018.

Students were up at 5:15 a.m. every morning beginning their workday. By 7 a.m. they would grab their supplies and head to the worksite.

This year’s volunteers will make a presentation about their experiences at the upcoming annual Fall Student Conference.

WHIZ! BANG! POP! Adventures in Science a Resounding Success

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Children’s STEM fair, co-sponsored by the Saratoga Springs Public Library, Sustainable Saratoga, and the Children’s Museum at Saratoga, attracted more than 300 people this past Wednesday. Children of all ages explored a diverse assemblage of scientific disciplines.

Twenty different organizations participated in the event, offering interactive STEM activities to stimulate kids’ interest in science. Activities exposed kids to the natural sciences, engineering, and physics in a creative, hands-on way. Kids studied animal tracks, learned about how worms turn food waste into nutrient-rich worm castings, and explored the physics of water flow through a watershed. Several

activities involved engineering solutions to solve problems in physics. A popular station was the ice cream table, where kids used super-cold saltwater to make, and then eat, their own ice cream.

Several volunteers noted how interesting it was to observe children independently solving problems in such a variety of ways, and many of the participating organizations encouraged us to hold another event next year. Margie Shepard, co-chair of Sustainable Saratoga’s Zero Waste Committee and one of the organizers of the event, reflected on the day: “It was rewarding to watch so many kids, from toddlers on up, engage with science in an interactive, fun way. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we inspired a future inventor or scientist?”

Stewart’s Expanding Distribution

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Stewart’s Shops Co. is proceeding with its plan for a new 61,250 square foot expansion on its bottling and distribution center in Saratoga Springs.

According to the Stewart’s website, “In 1945 the Dake brothers purchased a small dairy and ice cream business in Ballston Spa, this was the first Stewart’s ice cream shop.”

Later on it adds “Stewart’s Shops began as a family business and is still run by second and third generations of the Dake family.”

Erica Komoroske, Public Relations Specialist for Stewart’s, said that the current distribution center is 275,000 square feet, so

the new addition would be a 22% increase to the existing building, and that the addition would be used for more kitchen area and food storage.

“We manufacture 75% of the things that we distribute in our shops,” she said. “So our plant warehouses all of those items.”

The website added that they pick up milk from local dairies, bring it to the Stewart’s dairy, pasteurize and package it within 24 to 48 hours after leaving the farm.

It also said that “we pick up 54,000 eggs daily from Thomas’ Poultry Farm in Schuylerville which is just 15 miles east of our plant.”

Komoroske said that the expansion has been in planning for multiple years at this point.

“They’ve gone through a two year rigorous process, so it’s been in the works for years,” she said.

“It’s been brought up in Planning Board meetings two and a half years ago, so it’s been at least a three year process.”

One speed bump during the process was an Article 78 case where several individuals filed a suit against Stewart’s due to believing that the expansion would disturb the wetlands and divert storm water into their basements, lowering property value.

Judge Ann C. Crowell of the State Supreme Court dismissed the case and the Saratoga County clerk filed the ruling last week.

“We were pleased when the decision to dismiss the case was decided, because the town did go through a very rigorous two-year approval process,” Komoroske said.

She added that Claudia Braymer, the attorney who represented the individuals filing against Stewart’s, still believed that an appeal was always possible, but that it was also always expensive and time consuming, so “it doesn’t look like an appeal is imminent at this point, but it’s always a possibility,” according to Komoroske.

expansion, she said “this planned expansion is just more proof that Stewart’s is doing really well and we have the community’s support. People are supporting Stewart’s, people are coming to Stewart’s and using us for their ice cream and their eggs and their milk and their business is allowing us to expand.”

“We don’t have a definitive timeline,” Komoroske concluded.

“We anticipate construction to start in 2020.”

In addition to the new distribution facility expansion, Komoroske said that this year alone, Stewart’s had spent approximately $50 million on rebuilding 13 old shops and building four new ones. According to the Stewart’s website, the company has a total of 335 shops across New York and southern Vermont, employing over 4,500 people.

Packing the Perfect

by Barb Biagioli for Saratoga TODAY Summer is finally here in Saratoga! Those sunny Saturday mornings can now be pleasantly spent perusing the abundance of vendors at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market.

The summer season yields such a beautiful harvest of fresh fruits and vegetables – ones that are perfect for your next picnic in the park. On your next trip to the market, look out for those summer staples that you can use for packing a plant-based picnic, like radishes, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, zucchini, yellow squash, pickles and sauerkraut, carrots, and all of your

greens – spinach, kale, arugula, and lettuces galore. You can use these plant foods in a variety of picnicperfect snacks, like: • Homemade hummus with sliced carrots, cucumber, radishes, and zucchini • Homemade green pesto with sliced carrots, cucumber, radishes, and zucchini • Homemade pickled radishes with fresh herbs • Pesto and veggie wraps or hummus and veggie wraps • Zucchini noodle pasta with cherry tomatoes and pesto

• Garden picnic pasta salad (see recipe box) It’s time to dust off that picnic basket, soak up the sunshine and get outside before the sun sets on summer. My favorite summer memories are filled with days spent lounging by the pool, making forts in the woods, traipsing through the cornfield, homemade lunches on my parent’s back porch and picnics at the lake.

Picnics, that likely included some variation of a summer pasta salad.

Picnic Pasta Salad includes a healthy helping of dark leafy greens, summer vegetables, and a tangy sundried tomato dressing.

Garden Picnic Pasta Salad INGREDIENTS:

• 1 cup cherry tomatoes*, halved

FOR THE DRESSING:

*Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 1 zucchini*, cubed

• ½ cup sundried tomatoes

• 1 yellow squash*, cubed

• ¼ cup olive oil*

• 1 cup spinach*, chopped

• ¼ cup balsamic vinegar

• ½ cup basil*, chopped

• 2 garlic cloves*

• ½ cup walnuts, chopped

• 1 tsp sea salt

FOR THE PASTA SALAD: • 1 box green lentil pasta, cooked

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Cook the pasta according to the directions and allow to cool.

2. In a large mixing bowl, place the cooled pasta, chopped vegetables, herbs, and nuts. Stir to combine and set aside.

3. Combine the sundried tomatoes, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic and sea salt in a blender or food processor. Pulse or blend until creamy and smooth.

Taste and adjust the seasonings as necessary.

4. Add the dressing to the large mixing bowl of pasta and vegetables. Toss well to combine.

5. Serve immediately or chill for an hour and enjoy!

• 1 carton (15 ounces) part-skim ricotta cheese

• 1 pound uncooked shrimp (31-40 per pound), peeled and deveined

• 2 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro

• 2 cans (4 ounces each) chopped green chilies

• 4 garlic cloves, minced, divided

• 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

• 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon canola oil • 1 medium onion, chopped

• 12 corn tortillas (6"), warmed • Salsa and lime wedges

INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a large bowl, combine ricotta, cilantro, half the minced garlic, salt and pepper; set aside.

2. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add onion; cook and stir until softened, 4-5 minutes. Add shrimp, green chiles and pepper flakes; cook 1 minute longer. Add spinach and remaining garlic; cook and stir until shrimp turn pink and spinach is wilted, 4-5 minutes.

3. Serve shrimp mixture in tortillas with ricotta mixture, salsa and lime wedges.

Celebrate Mead Day Perhaps the oldest known fermented beverage, mead can be made easily at home. Saratoga Zymurgist and the American Homebrewers Association are celebrating Mead Day on Saturday, August 3 from 1 – 3 p.m. Starting at 1 p.m., there will be three different demonstrations for making mead.

The first mead will be an easy one-gallon traditional mead for beginners. The second will be a five-gallon batch showing advance techniques by making a melomel mead. Acting and Performance Drama Camp Town of Malta Parks and Recreation Department announces there are still a few openings for ages 9-15 in a camp running from July 29 through August 9 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. weekday indoors at the Malta Community Center, One Bayberry Drive, Malta. Actors and actresses collaborate as a team to write an original script or use existing storylines that they make their own. Saratoga Pinball and Arcade Show Do you enjoy pinball or have fond memories of playing them in arcades? Visit the Saratoga Pinball and Arcade Show! It will be held at the Saratoga Regional YMCA in Saratoga Springs, on Friday, August 9 from 2 – 10 p.m. and Saturday, August 10 from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. The show will feature approximately 50 pinball machines and arcade games from the past and present, all set on free play. 155th Baker Family Reunion The 155th annual gathering of the descendants of James Baker will be held Saturday, August 10 at the Malta Community Park located on Plains Rd. County Route 108 in Malta, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year, Baker Family Historian Maria Carr is looking for more stories about the women of the Baker Family. Strong, active Baker women can certainly be traced back to the family’s Quaker roots, and beyond.

Throughout the year, Maria publishes a monthly historical piece on Bakers throughout the centuries. Called the “Baker ‘Did You Know?’ Fact,” it can be found on The Baker Family Reunion Facebook page. Walking Tour of the Vischer Ferry Historic District Vischer Ferry General Store, 357 Riverview Rd., Rexford | 10 a.m.

The Saratoga Country History Roundtable will sponsor a walking tour of the Vischer Ferry Historic District led by Clifton Park Historian John Scherer. It is a typical Erie Canal hamlet with a high concentration of Greek revival homes constructed by canal boat builders who worked at the two Erie Canal dry docks located in the hamlet.

Learn about the Erie Canal and the growth it brought to a sleepy hamlet settled by the Dutch in the mid-18th century. Explore architecture styles from Clifton Park’s oldest home built by Nicholas Vischer in 1740 to a large Queen Anne Victorian home constructed in 1902. BALLSTON SPA — With more than 850 exhibitors entering over 6,500 exhibits in competitive categories from antiques to vegetables as well as live entertainment, eight special show attractions and spectacular Midway rides, The Saratoga County Fair offers something for all ages and interests.

Presented by The Saratoga County Agricultural Society, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization, The Saratoga County Fair offers opportunities to learn about agricultural practices, home-based crafts, gardening, natural resources, animal care and more throughout its six day schedule.

The 4-H program showcases a wide range of projects from local youth who are learning about food and nutrition, conservation, robotics, horticulture and animal science. For equine enthusiasts there are horse shows,

demonstrations, and competitions ongoing throughout Fair week, including the impressive Draft Horse Six-Horse Hitch Classic Series.

Artist Who Documented City’s Scenes & Its Characters Looks to Share

SARATOGA SPRINGS — His color-filled storytelling murals cling to the walls of Gaffney’s and Siro’s and the Old Bryan Inn, 9 Maple Ave., the Tin & Lint and inside of Saratoga Springs City Hall.

Hud Armstrong’s creations include those happy faces and local scenes brought to life - a different one each year - emblazoned across the annual Chowderfest T-shirts for the past generation. Then there is a near 20-feet-long mural that runs across the lobby of the Mabee Building on Church Street, depicting more than 200 local people – many of whom you’d recognize - done up in the Victorian Era stylings of the 19th century.

“The purpose is to give a feeling of the era and some of the characters that lived here,” says Armstrong.

His newest project – which he displays in a series of carefully detailed scrapbooks – is coordinating about 300 pages illustrations and accompanying texts he created from 1991 to

2004 for Poor Richard’s Journal into book form, and has begun the process of exploring ways to make such a publication possible.

“The area where these take place is often Saratoga, but what’s happening is universal,” Armstrong explains, leafing through the pages of the catalogued works.

Armstrong started drawing at the age of four while listening to the radio because he wanted to see what things looked like. Some of his earliest childhood memories growing up in South Glens Falls involve visits to Saratoga Springs and marveling at the vintage structures.

“I remember when I was a kid, we would drive down Route 9 and into Saratoga. You’d take a left on North Broadway where the arterial is, come right into town and you’d see the mansions and the fire department and the theater.”

In the 1960s, he celebrated his 21st birthday by completing basic training, then going to see the company commander who would decide his next move.

“He looked over my file and saw I had a background in art. I don't

know what it was about my dossier, but something in there made him think, 'Hey, this guy will be really good in amphibians!' So off I went for amphibian training and ended up being sent to Qui Nhon,” he remembered about his time on the Vietnam coast, south of Da Nang.

His works often straddle a timeline between future and past, offering a respectful nod to those who have come before, imagining what may lie up ahead, and in a few quick strokes of ink explaining the significance of what it all means to us today.

One of the more playful sequences is a series of cartoons depicting vintage baseball fields - the Polo Grounds, Ebbets Field, the classic Yankee Stadium.

“What you’re looking at is centerfield,” he explains, gesturing to the latter. “On one side you’ve got Joe Torre and his group: Rivera and Jeter. On the other side you’ve got Casey Stengel and Mickey Mantle, Maris and Yogi, even Ruth and Gehrig. When you look further out into the field, from the centerfield flagpole is Yankee Stadium - the

way that it was recently, and on the other side Yankee Stadium from the 1920s to the ‘70s.”

Armstrong likes to keep simple the process of creating his cartoons.

“You pretty much form an idea.

From that idea you might have a

punchline, you might not, but you work up to it, you play it back-andforth,” he says. “When you get to the end sometimes the punchline will work. If it doesn’t? The best thing to do is flip the whole thing around, and then it becomes funny.”

Woodstock 1969 Legends Melanie, John Sebastian at Caffe Lena This Weekend SARATOGA SPRINGS — Melanie – whose song “Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)” was written about her experience at the 1969 Woodstock festival, and John Sebastian – who first gained popularity with The Lovin' Spoonful hits "Do You Believe in Magic,” "Summer in the City," and "Daydream," before appearing at Woodstock as a solo performer - are each staging shows at Caffe Lena this weekend. Soak Up The Sun at SPAC

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Before staging her show at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Sheryl Crow spent the afternoon soaking up the Spa City sun, the singer explained to the large crowd gathered at SPAC to watch Crow and Heart perform at SPAC Sunday night. Their journey included a jaunt to one of the Spa State Park pools, a meal at BurgerFi, a visit to the “very cute” downtown, and a stop-over at Saratoga Guitar.

Backed by a six-piece band and draped in an emeraldspangled leather jacket, a black t-shirt that spelled “Love,” electric blue spandex pants and white “dad” sneakers, Crow performed an 11-song, 60-minute set that dialed up a slew of her radiofriendly hits - “Soak Up the Sun,” “Everyday Is a Winding Road,” “Strong Enough,” and “All I Wanna Do,” among them.

She performed a new tune, titled “Prove You Wrong,” from

her upcoming record, which she called “ostensibly my final album,” and by set-end swapping her ever-present acoustic guitar for a red, white and blue Buck Owens Signature Fender Telecaster electric guitar for the song “Can’t Cry Anymore,” before switching to its sunburst Tele cousin to revisit her mid-90’s hit “If It Makes You Happy.”

Heart performed a 15-song set over the course of about 90 minutes that dipped into the band’s songbook from the ‘70s, including the radio-friendly hits “Magic Man,” “Barracuda,” and “Crazy on You.” Nearly one-third of the set was comprised of covers, including a Nancy Wilsonled rendition of the Simon and Garfunkel classic “The Boxer,” Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” and Toronto’s “What About Love” – the latter which Heart rode to the Top 10 in 1985. Heart was joined by “our new friend Sheryl Crow” in a performance of the song “These Dreams.”

Saratoga Wine & Food Festival Returns Oct. 4-5 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Performing Arts Center announced this week its Saratoga Wine and Food Festival will return for the harvest season on Oct. 4-5 with a focus on sustainable culinary practices and cultural experiences.

Presented annually at the end of its classical season, the Saratoga Wine and Food Festival is an epicurean showcase featuring two days of gourmet events highlighting fine international wines, innovative chef-prepared menus, cooking demonstrations and wine seminars, tastings, art and performance.

Celebrating the bounty and talent of the region from the Hudson Valley to the Adirondacks, the destination event will feature a new farm-to-table dinner centering around the theme of “Forest Magic.” The 2019 festival

will feature live music curated by Caffè Lena, sculptures by The Hyde Collection, photography by TerriLynn Pellegri, food tastings and culinary talent curated by John Sconzo of Rascal & Thorn and Kim Klopstock of Lily and the Rose, chef demonstrations on sustainability, VIP experiences, and design by Colin Cowie Lifestyle.

Curated in partnership with Skidmore College, a weeklong Cultivate Series – from Sunday, Sept. 29 to Thursday, Oct. 3 - will lead up to the festival offering a diverse collection of free events throughout Saratoga Springs.

Brignola was a legend in the jazz world. He played the big horn like no one else—with a fat, round tone that sang from his heart. The true leading light of the Capital Region jazz scene, Brignola died in 2002, but his music lives on, in the ears of fans and in the work of his collaborators as well as those he inspired.

Brignola brings together a number of Brignola cohorts and disciples, each a world-class talent in their own right. To open the evening, the SUNY Schenectady School of Music Faculty Jazz Combo will present a program of original compositions and jazz standards.

LIVE AT ROUND LAKE: JAANE DOE, SONNY & PERLEY ROUND LAKE — As a young singer/songwriter in her teens, Jaane Doe, then Beth Gowan, approached Lena Spencer, and scored early gigs at Caffe Lena, garnering a large teenage audience that was lined up down Phila Street to get in to see her. A 1976 graduate of Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park, she played in various rock and acoustic folk groups during her younger years in the area. Before she turned 20, she migrated out to Southern California and spent years developing her craft. She has many a story to tell with a rich background of experiences among notable figures in music.

Harmful Old Guards in Horse Racing

It’s hard, I know, looking out onto that Saratoga Race Course dirt and think anything but sunny things about it.

Fact is, the data is in, and dirt tracks must go.

Few sports have a tradition with deeper roots than horse racing. So if you change the racing surface — as several highprofile tracks once did — you fundamentally change the breed.

Or do you? All else being equal, if all surfaces are the same, then what does it matter that American Pharoah ran on dirt and his offspring will run on, say, Tapeta? Do you look back at Barry Sanders’ career and think more or less because he spent eight games a year playing on AstroTurf? And let’s not trivialize the damage that surface did to any number of football and baseball players.

Fact is, there’s an old guard in horse racing. (Isn’t there always an old guard?) And they like it a certain way. We race on dirt because we have stallions that make dirt runners who win dirt classics. Well, dirt is killing horses at a rate that far exceeds the synthetic surfaces.

Santa Anita’s deadly year is the tinder lighting up this debate.

“We’ve had all of this catastrophic publicity, this onslaught against our industry, and yet nobody is willing to recognize one of the most obvious things that we can do by conversion to safer surfaces,” said Bill Casner in a Louisville Courier-Journal story. “The data is there. It’s not

speculation ... (But) we’ve always been an industry of ostriches. We bury our heads. We think these problems will go away.”

Burying its head in the sand is an apt metaphor for the racing industry in general. The ones that make the kind of islandbuying money are the ones who breed these horses. That’s always been the case. And the fear, one speculates, is that a brilliant dirt stallion won’t translate into a producer of synthetic winners.

For years, synthetic tracks tended to favor closers, a more “grass-style” of running.

According to the C-J story, equine fatalities on synthetic tracks added up to 1.2 deaths per 1,000 starts. Grass was 1.47 and good, ol’ fashioned, American dirt was 1.97, nearly double the amount of synthetic surfaces.

Now, on its surface that doesn’t seem like much, but when you extrapolate that over 10 years, synthetic surfaces resulted in 2,031 fewer race-related deaths.

That’s an equal number — if not way more — devastated owners and caretakers.

When the leading tracks — Keeneland and Santa Anita, namely — switched from dirt to synthetic, I’ll admit, playing and handicapping those tracks didn’t feel like real horse racing. But you know what? After enough repetitions, and watchiing enough replays, and giving the horses and the jockeys and the trainers enough practice, it’ll normalize.

We as fans or horseplayers will get over it.

Yeah, the Blue Grass Stakes and the Santa Anita Derby and the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita when Raven’s Pass beat Curlin all felt cheapened and annoyingly un-handicap-able, but that’s because we’re messing around with all these different surfaces.

Move to a universal “new dirt” and things will play out just like they have for decades over old dirt.

“We know Keeneland is run by a small group of powerful people that have stallions,” Casner told the C-J. “That was the reason Keeneland switched. They blamed it on the trainers. I talked to I

“We’re fixing to lose our industry. And unless decisions are made that are in the best interest of the horse, we will lose it.” don’t know how many trainers and I asked them if they’d been called in and interviewed. There wasn’t one. You couldn’t find one trainer — Charlie LoPresti, Nick Zito, Mark Casse — none of them were questioned on it.

It was a spin they put on it so they could reconvert to dirt so that dirt stallions could have the advantage... In short, decisions in our industry never seem to be made in the best interest of the horse. They’re always made for individual agendas. And it’s catching up with us now. We’re fixing to lose our industry. And unless decisions are made that are in the best interest of the horse, we will lose it.”

Sad to think that the horse was always just a tool. Same goes for all professional athletes, but at least the labor relations in the major sports put a halt to the abject exploitation we saw before free agency and arbitration. But where’s the horse’s union? Sure, there are animal activist groups, but this issue is too layered to burn it all down, as the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals would want.

So what’s the solution? If the breeders worry about what synthetic surfaces will do to their studs, then maybe the industry

needs to kick in a subsidy until the breed course-corrects itself. Let the grandfathered dirt stallions age out.

If we normalize every race surface with the same material, then what’s the hang up? The Derby will still be the best two minutes in sports. The average fan won’t know the difference.

The seasoned one, sure, yes, she will pine for the days of dirt, but she’ll get over it.

This sport, in many ways is brilliant and fun. But in other ways it’s barbaric, brutal and backwards.

Do we really need whips? Or can we teach our jockeys to be better riders in as they come up?

Get busy livin’, ‘cuz the horses are dyin’.

Weezie at the FLAGPOLE: HOLY HEAT!

for Saratoga TODAY In a shortened week dominated by torrential downpours, heat and scorching humidity, it was ironically fitting that the track went dark the day after its beloved patron saint, the Queen of Saratoga, Marylou Whitney passed away.

Since time immemorial the Spa has been graced with Marylou's philanthropy and joie de vivre. From the backstretch to the ballroom, and from the farm to the finish line, she dignified every mission with her timeless style and class, and her love of horse racing, and the people behind the scenes that are its heart and soul.

Marylou will very sadly miss her long overdue induction into the Racing Hall of Fame next week, but her eternal legacy and spirit will certainly be very much present and alive at the ceremony.

Marylou won the Eclipse Award of Merit in the Pillars of the Turf category in 2011, and is the only woman to have ever owned and bred a Kentucky Oaks winner.

In 2003 her homebred Bird Town went off at 18--1 under new rider, Edgar Prado, but went on to win the Oaks in the record breaking time of 1:48.64 for the 1-1/8 mile race. This record still stands today.

One month later, Bird Town captured her second Grade 1 with a victory in the one mile Acorn at Belmont, cementing her Eclipse Award later that year as Top 3 Year Old Filly.

In 2004 another of Marylou's homebreds, Birdstone, gave her perhaps her greatest thrill in horseracing when he upset the Triple Crown bid of Smarty Jones in the Belmont. Marylou was typically

gracious, however, as she actually apologized for thwarting history, saying that she'd told Edgar before the race to come in 2nd.

Birdstone came back to capture the unforgettable edition of the Travers that August, when a treacherous, blackened sky loomed over the darkened oval, and equally soaked and delighted the crowd, including a jubilant Marylou, and her loyal friend and soon-to-be Hall of Fame trainer, Nick Zito.

Wednesday's card was highlighted by the inaugural running of the Rick Violette Stakes for 2 year old New York-breds going 6 furlongs. How apropos it was that Heaven let loose and reminded us of Rick's rain soaked, triumphant Whitney in his twilight last year, when his wonderful New York-bred, Diversify, brought him such joy, only two months before his passing.

Although there was no prophetic rainbow following his race this year, there were plenty of wet hugs and tears of joy, as longtime friends and colleagues gathered in the Winner's Circle to pay tribute to a man who fought passionately for them and for New York racing.

As a rookie trainer Rudy Rodriguez occupied Barn 7 at Aqueduct next to Rick's Barn 6.

The lessons Rudy learned watching the veteran trainer ply his trade have been very valuable during his successful career, and Rudy will never forget the impact Rick made not only on him, but on every life he touched on the backstretch.

For this reason, it was an emotional honor for Rudy to win the very first Rick Violette Stakes.

His longshot, Sky of Hook, under a superb ride by Luis Saez, broke well and sat in third behind the favorites. When it looked like he had no hope at the eighth pole with Listentoyourheart ahead by two lengths, the chesnut colt roared over the sloppy going and nailed the frontrunner at the wire by a nose.

Sky of Hook paid $20.60 for the win, and for Luis it seemed most fitting that he should capture the first Rick Violette Stakes, as he was aboard Rick's last winner, Byself, when he won an AOC at Belmont last October.

announcement was made that was surely sweet music to Angel Rick's ears. Executive Director Gordon Boyd and Bethesda Episcopal Church, in conjunction with B.E.S.T. (Backstrech Employees Service Team) and its Executive Director, Paul Ruchames, announced the groundbreaking of Mercy House, a 6000 square foot facility that will serve veterans, domestic abuse victims, and backstretch workers.

The top floor of the four story Mercy House will be dedicated to and named after Rick Violette.

It will house backstretch workers recovering from injuries, substance abuse, or general hardship, and I cannot possibly imagine a finer way to honor Rick's tireless work and dedication to these very people.

Bravo to NYTHA (New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association) and President Joe Applebaum for their $25K donation to initiate this project in memory of their longtime President and fearless advocate, Rick Violette.

In Thursday's feature, The Stillwater, a $100K, 6 furlong stakes for 2 year old New Yorkbred fillies, Jeremiah Englehart and Al Gold's My Italian Rabbi survived a thrilling stretch battle with the 2-5 favorite, Fierce Lady, to win by a nose.

Red hot Luis Saez once again rode a longshot to victory, as My Italian Rabbi paid $19.80 for the win.

With each passing season, I realize more every day how much I cherish certain things in life, with family and old friends at the top of my list. One of these "things" represents both family and old friends, and is the arrival from Cincinnati of my good friend Steve Sylvester and the wonderful guys in his family for their annual Saratoga trip.

Although this year's pilgrimage started off on a rocky note when Syl's flight was cancelled out of Cincy early Thursday morning, and continued with the weather issues and cancellation of Saturday's card, nothing will ever rain on Steve Sylvester and his crew's parade.

As the proud son of Vito Sylvester, who was a member of General Patton's 3rd Army that rescued American forces at the Siege of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, Syl will never sweat the small stuff. His positive nature, kind spirit and generous soul will always reign, as his never say die attitude is contagious.

While the boys were arriving at the Holiday Inn before the first night tradition of dinner at Pennell's, the heat that would put a stamp on their long weekend was close at their heels.

Friday's card was nothing to write home about, as even the Grade 3 Lake George for 3 year old fillies going a mile on the turf was diminished to a 3 horse,

When it's slim pickings at the Track, and you can't cut the air with a knife, it's time for an early arrival at Siro's, where coveted bar stools in the corner and cool air are greeted like a trip to the Winner's Circle!

Syl, a member of Ara Parseghian's undefeated 1973 National Championship team at Notre Dame that upset top-ranked Alabama 24-23 in the Sugar Bowl, was a longtime NFL veteran with the Oakland Raiders, where he collected three Super Bowl rings in 1976, 1980 and 1983.

Syl loves the corner seat that once was occupied by our beloved Pop Warner Football Coach, Spike O'Hara, and although local artist and icon Hud Armstrong has retired from bartending, and a beautiful young girl named Briea is now in his spot, somehow one could sense the passing of history, and believe that Spike and Syl are kindred spirits with their love of people, football and horseracing.

The night continued at Mama Mia's, another favorite spot for the guys, which for me is oddly reminiscent of Cincinnati's old Sorrento's, a place that is near and dear to my heart. It is here where I was introduced to Syl some 40 years ago by our dearly departed friend, Willie DeLuca, Sorrento's owner, and a veteran of the Saratoga trip. continues to next page...

While putting my then husband through Medical School, I worked days at the University of Cincinnati and nights at Sorrento's. Sweet Mama did all the cooking, and Willie was the "host with the most," ever the entertainer out front, while Papa Enrico ruled in stern silence out back.

Tragically, Papa died following a fire in their kitchen, and Willie passed away far too soon only a year or so later in 2006. I know that the Saratoga trip in 2005 was forever etched in Willie's memory as a beautiful highlight. Syl, with his huge heart, continues to look out for Willie's son Enrico who now lives in Toledo.

The brainchild behind this annual trip is Syl's cousin, John Sharbell, who wanted to honor his late Dad, who also passed away far too soon at 50, by establishing this tradition, now in its 17th year.

John's Dad "Junior" was married to one of Syl's Dad Vito's sisters, and along with Joe Raphael, who was also married to one of Vito's sisters, became best friends in business and life, through their shared love of horseracing, gambling and River Downs. This tightknit trio, with their unique

blend of Italian and Lebanese blood, created a powerful family bond that is strong to this day.

"Junior" ran a very significant bookmaking operation in Cincinnati, and Vito and Joe, who also served in the military, were his loyal "runners" after returning from WWII. John, with his Hollywood good looks and easy smile, was his Dad's best student, and carries the family torch proudly today.

The lucky recipients of John's idea and expertise include his brother Joe Sharbell, who is an avid Xavier fan like me, Tommy Raphael, the original Joe's son, who is a semi-retired union electrician, and his son Timmy, who went to Ohio State and lives in Columbus.

The family tree continues with Mike, a longtime Cincinnati area school teacher, who married one of Tommy's sisters, and his son Vinny, who also graduated from Ohio State, with a degree in Civil Engineering.

Brothers Kevin and Johnny are also grandsons of Joe Raphael, as their Mom is one of Tommy's sisters, too. Johnny works at my old GE Credit Union, while Kevin works at the University of Cincinnati, and is about to become a proud papa for the first time, with a baby girl on the way.

The elder statesman of the younger generation who is also a regular on this eagerly anticipated trip is the oldest Raphael cousin, JD. He is the son of Tommy's older brother Joe, who sadly passed away recently. JD is an HVAC salesman.

Rounding out the lineup is Adam Stowe, who interestingly, but probably coincidentally, has the same last name as my mother's ancestor, Harriett Beecher Stowe. Harriett actually lived in Cincinnati in the 1830's when her Dad Lyman Beecher was President of the Lane Theological Seminary.

She met and then married her husband, Calvin Stowe, during her Dad's time in Cincinnati.

Adam's Grandfather was the longtime beloved Clubhouse Manager for the Cincinnati Reds, Bernie Stowe, whose son Mark married another Raphael sister, Adam's mother. Adam and cousin Kevin were Reds' batboys as kids, just as Grandpa Bernie was at the beginning of his legendary 67 year career with the organization.

Bernie passed away in 2016.

Adam went to my beloved Xavier, like his Uncle Joe Sharbell, and works downtown for 5/3 Bank. He also moonlights as the owner of The Exchange, a bar close to 5/3 headquarters.

I would be remiss not to mention one of the other trip regulars, "Happy" Fein, who like me is not an actual member of the family, but as a good friend of Syl's is welcomed with open arms. Happy, who was the official scorekeeper for the Boston Celtics during their heyday from 1969-1979, drives up from his Ridgewood, New Jersey home every year.

As I said my goodbyes to Syl and the Cincy crew after a day at The Rivers Casino Sportsbook, necessitated by the cancellation of racing at the Spa, I was filled with

gratitude for them, and also for my beloved hometown, as I realized that it is the allure of Saratoga that brings them back every year, and serves as our conduit.

I am honored to be included as just one of the guys during their epic adventure each year, and can never thank Syl enough for his generosity, or his crew for allowing this gal to interrupt their all male family affair, and for linking me to my 35 year history in Cincinnati.

Once Landeros earned his first Kentucky Derby mount with Bodexpress, Migliore reached out...

Chris Landeros was just 19 years old when he competed against jockey legend Richard Migliore in California in 2007. Even though he lost his apprenticeship jockey status after winning 152 races in the prior year, Landeros was still fairly new to the circuit.

During that 2007 season, Landeros watched Migliore’s winning ride of Student Council in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar and Desert Code in the Affirmed Handicap at Hollywood Park. It was also this period when Migliore mentored Landeros while including him in family events such as going to the beach after the races.

Little did anyone, especially Landeros, know their paths would meet again more than a decade later.

Migliore has become Landeros’s mentor again. This time, he is his agent for the Saratoga season.

Even before becoming his agent, Migliore has been impressed with his riding style and demeanor.

“I was aware of him because I liked the way he handled and conducted himself,” Migliore said.

“He gets it. He sees the bigger picture.”

“I liked the way he rides,” he added. “There are guys who win who aren’t good riders, and then there are guys who are good riders who aren’t getting a lot of opportunities, but the way they position their horses and ride in a race, they are a good rider. That’s what I thought about him when he was 18. He’s really matured and developed since then. He’s

much stronger and really finishes with a horse.”

Landeros has been making an impression this year at various tracks in Florida and Kentucky that include a top 10 finish in the jockey standings at Gulfstream Park for winter meet.

He has also won graded stakes races aboard Bourbon Resolution (Ben Ali at Keeneland), Champagne Anyone (Gulfstream Park Oaks), Si Que Es Buena (La Prevoyante Stakes at Gulfstream) and Gentle Ruler (Robert G. Dick Memorial Stakes at Delaware Park).

“I called him up to congratulate him on the Derby mount,” Migliore said. “I told him, ‘I really think you are ready to step up and try Saratoga.’ He said, ‘Really, you think so?’ If you want to do this, I can represent you.’ He said ‘Let’s do this.’”

Landeros already had experience riding at Saratoga last year. Over three racing days, he rode just five horses, but he did come back with a winner: Big Dollar Bill in the marathon Birdstone Stakes for his father-inlaw trainer Ian Wilkes.

“I was fortunate to come here last year,” Landeros said. “I really wanted to come last summer. We didn’t feel it was the right time.

I felt that I needed another year under my belt. I could ship in to Saratoga for a stakes. I came here for four weekends and worked some horses. One of the biggest supporters that I have is my father-in-law.”

With just a couple of weeks before the start of the meet and the support of Milgiore, Landeros

was still contemplating on whether to stay in Kentucky for the remainder of the summer or come to Saratoga in the search for opportunities. However, Landeros realized the long-term significance if he didn’t come here for the 40-day meet.

“The only thing that was going to hold me back is home,” Landeros said. “This is the stage where I am getting close by going to Gulfstream, coming here and being at Keeneland and Churchill.

I have to stay with these guys. I cannot let them get too far away.

It was time.”

It didn’t take too long for Landeros to win his first race of the Saratoga season. Riding for the first time of the season on July 11, he guided Originator with a near last-to-first move in an allowance race.

What made this victory more unique was the connection Migliore and his son Joseph have with Originator, who is owned by West Point Thorougbreds.

to win the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame Stakes in 2005 and the Bernard Baruch Handicap in 2006. Joseph Migliore is a sales associate for West Point Thoroughbreds.

“It was the first winner for us as a team. It’s pretty cool,” Landeros said about the connection around the victory. “I got scratched out of the first two days and that was disappointing.

I knew I had a couple of chances.”

Landeros is expected to have more chances this meet, especially horses like Champagne Anyone and Bourbon Resolution who are currently training in Saratoga. Beyond those horses, Landeros wants to maximize his summer experience.

“I’m happy to be here. I am blessed to be here. I am enjoying every moment,” he said. “I am working hard in the morning.

I see it as kind of a working vacation, but I do have goals. I want to do well enough where I can call this my summer. Right now, I am taking it one day at a time, one race at a time.”

When he was 13 years old, French began rowing with his older siblings and it soon became his favorite sport.

"I'd say rowing for sure has taught me a lot about persistence and everyday kind of persistence.

Every day - just coming towards life and your goals,” said French.

French Is a part of the Advanced Rowing Initiative of the Northeast (ARION) of Saratoga Rowing. This elite status of rowing comes with a lot of early 5 a.m. practices.

Prior to rowing he was a wrestler. His grandfather, the late wrestling coach Joe Bena is French’s biggest inspiration as he demonstrated perseverance until the end of his life.

“He kind of brought that same aspect from his coaching years to his own life, which is super inspirational cause every day he'd push himself to take a few more steps or kind of do that, even though his heart was kind of giving out. That was really inspirational to me,” said French.

In 2017, French first competed at the Rowing World Championship and was recognized as the youngest racer to every compete in the event. This

JUNIOR DIVISION: Olsen Associates 39 - Goodemote Physical Therapy 28 After falling behind in the first half ,Olsen Associates got it together in the final five minutes to pull off a 39 to 28 victory over Goodemote Physical Therapy. Olsen was led by Sam Chaucer with 15 points while teammates Josue Martinez and Cole Whitman each contributed 10 points. Jackson Howell had 8 points, Owen Brown and Liam Brennan 6 points apiece in the loss.

Saratoga PBA 44 – The Barrelhouse 29 Tasiah LaDore scored 16 first half and 20 points total for the game which helped Saratoga PBA defeat The Barrelhouse by a score of 44 to 29.

Wyatt Wood also dropped in 12 points in the win. The Barrelhouse got 10 points from Nick Humowitz and another 8 points from Ian O’Rourke Saratoga Retired Firefighters 55 – Cudney’s Launderers 30 Saratoga Retired Firefighters used a blanketing half-court trap defense to pull away from Cudney’s Launderers for 55 to 30 win. The victors got 12 points apiece from Kelly Mateo and Evan Rosettie along with 11 points from Owen Mongon. Cudney’s Jake Schaefer scored 11 points and teammate Owen Glynn added 9 points in the defeat.

SENIOR DIVISION: Village Photo 53 – Pashley Contracting 36 Using a balanced scoring attack led by Elijah Woods' game high 19 points and Rodell Evans 14 points, Village Photo took an early lead and never looked back in their win over Pashley Contracting by the score of 53 to 36. Owen Redick ‘s 15 points and Channing Adriance 13 points led Pashley’s Contracting.

Moreau Associates 39 – Spa Café 20 Getting a game high 13 points from Nick Scalo who was all over the court and another 12 points from Andrew Masten, Moreau Associates went on to defeat Spa Café 39 to 20. Spa Café got 9 and 8 points from Matt Salway and Carter Wichelms respectively.

Saratoga Honda 49 – Synergy Promotions 30 Saratoga Honda used 25 points from Brian McCarthy while teammates Paul Steves 15 points, Stephen Bebee 4 points, 3 points from James Bye and 2 points from Max Tastensen to get a victory over Synergy Promotions by the score of 49 to 30. Synergy Promotions got 17 points from Trey Stanislowsi and another 7 points from Braylon DuMortier.

REXFORD — On Monday, July 22 Saratoga Bridges held their 16th Annual J. Michael Fitzgibbons Memorial Golf Classic at the Edison Club. The full day event included lunch, beverages, contest and prizes followed by the Awards Ceremony and Dinner. Over $40,000 was raised at the event. A portion of the proceeds benefits the J. Michael Fitzgibbons Memorial

Scholarship Fund.

Annually, one of their staff members is awarded an educational scholarship in Michael’s memory as this fund was established to honor their long-time Board Member who passed away unexpectedly in 2005.

All exercises are done in a standing position to eliminate the possibility of vertigo or mobility issues. The class will end with a short movement combination using music from familiar ballet repertory. The cost is $45 for five weeks. Walk-ins are welcome for $10 per class. Spa City Baseball Camp 2019

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The annual July Spa City Baseball Camp has ended its four-day session training 50 kids. Coaches Phonsey Lambert and Dale Long combined have over 30 years of experience running camps and clinics. At this camp, children ages seven through 14 came from around the county to learn and develop their baseball skills taught by the Saratoga Central Catholic varsity baseball team.
