OPIOID CRISIS HITS HOME You Too Can Save A Life

by Kevin Matyi Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA — According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “from 1999 to 2017, more than 700,000 people have died from a drug overdose,” and more than twothirds of the overdoses in 2017 involved an opioid.

To combat the opioid epidemic at a local level, RAIS, Recovery Advocacy in Saratoga, held a Narcan training session

last week on Thursday, Aug. 29 at the Presbyterian - New England Congregational Church on Circular Street led by the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s office.

Captain Dan Morley of the Sheriff ’s office said that in Saratoga, the opioid epidemic has been “very, very bad,” and that Saratoga has seen an influx of overdoses, but that the number has flattened out more recently.

Despite that, he said “we’re not out of the woods yet.”

Third Annual Saratoga Grandparents Day with

Multi-Generational Community Event

Nominations currently being sought for Saratoga’s Greatest Grandparents Club.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Wesley Foundation, the philanthropic arm of The Wesley Community, will host its third annual Saratoga Grandparents Day celebration on Sunday, September 8 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Saratoga Springs City Center.

The annual event honors grandparents and greatgrandparents by providing an opportunity for families of all ages to spend time together on National Grandparents Day. The fun-filled morning will include activities for all ages, including carnival-style games, face painting, crafts, balloon art, a magician, and photo opportunities, amongst other activities.

The first 100 grandparents to enter the event will receive a special giveaway bag. Admission is free. Donations will also be accepted to support the mission of The Wesley Community.

“We are thrilled to host a unique Grandparents Day celebration in Saratoga Springs for a third consecutive year,” said The Wesley Foundation President Don Braim. “We look forward to seeing families of all ages spend time together honoring their grandparents on this important national holiday that celebrates the members of our family who do so much for us.”

The Wesley Foundation also welcomes families to recognize the role of their grandparents and great-grandparents by nominating them to be part of Saratoga’s Greatest Grandparents Club.

Nominations can be submitted at SaratogaGrandparentsDay.com.

Up to 10 nominated grandparents will be randomly selected and recognized during a special ceremony at the event.

Proceeds from the Saratoga Grandparents Day celebration will support the continued renovation of the Springs building at Wesley Health Care Center. The residence caters to older adults who may have significant, chronic medical needs requiring daily assistance.

Phase one of the renovations was completed in 2016, and phase two of the renovations is currently in the planning stage.

Major sponsors for the event are Angerame Architects, The Fort Miller Group, Marshall & Sterling Insurance, and Ray Martin/ Crescent Hill Partners. The event is chaired by Wesley Foundation Board Member Timothy Busch.

Hicka is accused of intentionally driving his vehicle into another person’s place of business causing damage in excess of $1,500.

Fruci, who will outline changes at election sites.

The LWV is a political organization that encourages informed and active citizen

LOUGHBERRY FIGHTS BACK SARATOGA SPRINGS — For 40 years, the residents of Loughberry have maintained plantlings on Loughberry Road. In recent years, invasive vines, which strangle and kill the plantlings, began appearing. Recently, over 20 residents with rakes, pruners, saws and other tools spent a Saturday clearing the vines over a quarter-acre site and fence line. Additionally, the city department of Public Works hauled two dump trucks of the vines away.

CITY DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE ENDORSES MORRISON, MORAN AND THREE INCUMBENTS FOR NOVEMBER ELECTION

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs Democratic Committee last week announced its endorsements for the 2019 general election.

The committee endorsed incumbent John Franck for Commissioner of Accounts, Patty Morrison for Commissioner of Finance, incumbent Meg Kelly for Mayor, Dillon Moran for Commissioner of Public Works and incumbent Tara Gaston for County Supervisor. The announcement was made by newly named Saratoga Springs Democratic Committee

chairwoman Sarah J. Burger.

Earlier this summer, several members of the committee staged a walk-out after incumbent Michele Madigan – the committee’s previously endorsed candidate for Commissioner of Finance – lost the June Democratic Primary to Morrison.

Morrison - on the Democratic line, and Madigan – who will appear on the Independence Party and Working Families Party lines, will face one another in the citywide general election on Nov. 5 when all five City Council positions – including mayor – as well as two Saratoga Springs Supervisor seats, will be up for vote.

The city Democratic Committee also approved a resolution, supported by all endorsed candidates, declaring that survivors of sexual harassment, sexual assault and domestic violence be heard and respected, condemning sexual harassment, sexual abuse and domestic violence and demanding that perpetrators be held accountable.

Kendall Hicks, who is running for Commissioner of Public Safety as a Democrat, has not receive city Democratic Committee endorsement.

On the Republican side, Commissioner of Public Works Anthony “Skip” Scirocco and Supervisor Matthew Veitch – both incumbents, and candidates Robin Dalton – for the position of Commissioner of Public Safety, and Stephen Mittler - for Saratoga County Supervisor, have been endorsed by the Saratoga Springs Republican Committee.

Tim Holmes, who is running for mayor on the Republican line, has not receive city Republican Committee endorsement.

NYS to Reimburse Saratoga More than $126K for Early Voting Implementation Costs SARATOGA — The State Fiscal Year, or SFY 2019-20 Budget allocated a total of $24.7 million for assistance with implementing a series of election law reforms, including early voting and authorization for counties to use e-poll book technology in the upcoming 2019 elections.

This funding was split between two pots of money: $14.7 million for capital equipment purchases, including e-poll books and specialized printers, and $10 million that was appropriated to reimburse local boards of elections for costs related to the implementation of early voting.

NYS Division of Budget announced that they are approving the State Board of Elections’ plan to distribute $10 million to county governments to support early

voting implementation. Saratoga County – which counts a total enrollment of 162,883 people – has been specifically targeted for just over $126,000 of that $10 million distribution.

Statewide, the total enrollment is just under 12. 7 million people – nearly 5.2 million of those in New York City, and just over 7.5 million in the rest of the state, outside New York City.

“The election reforms passed by state lawmakers this year, including early voting, will provide greater access for New Yorkers as they head to the polls,” Stephen J. Acquario, executive director of the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC), said in a statement. Counties gear up to open early voting sites in just under 60 days, he added.

Council Tackles Big Issues

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The City Council will address a series of issues this month that could change the visual landscape of Broadway, enhance the diversity of future political candidates, and alter the directional flow of traffic near the downtown core.

On Sept. 2, the council introduced a 44-page lease proposal between the city of Saratoga Springs and the Saratoga Springs City Center Authority. If approved – which could happen by mid-month - the agreement would set into motion the development of a 600-space parking garage project near High Rock Park.

The terms of the lease runs to Dec. 31, 2032 – aligning with the length of the existing lease with the City Center itself, explained City Attorney Vincent DeLeonardis.

Plans call for the City Center Authority to build and subsequently maintain a multilevel, 600-space parking garage atop city owned land, just east of the existing City Center building.

“Air rights” for the construction of a so-called pedestrian connector would be included, and bridge the city center with the parking structure, atop Maple Avenue.

The city would receive in return 60 designated parking spaces in the new structure to be used during daytime working hours, as well as 50% of the structure’s excess cash flow. What approximate dollar figure that would equal is “not known at this time,” said DeLeonardis, but is

“to be determined by a calculation of the revenues generated minus the debt service and maintenance and operation costs associated with the facility.”

The City Center Authority would also develop an extension of the Green Belt Trail along High Rock Avenue. The city owns approximately 2-1/2-acres of land, currently used for surface parking, that runs from High Rock Park to Lake Avenue, and Maple Avenue to High Rock Avenue, one block east of Broadway. The lease is specific to one portion of that segment – the area of land to the east of the City Center - and only to the development of the parking structure and pedestrian bridge.

A Public Hearing is expected to take place prior to the next City Council meeting, on Tuesday night, Sept. 17. The Council will likely vote on the lease agreement later the same evening. If approved, the development of the parking garage may begin as soon as this fall.

Parking Congestion at Lake Ave School The council hosted a 45-minute public discussion Sept. 3 to address student safety and residential concerns as it relates to public parking, student parking and school bus transport in the immediate area of the Lake Avenue Elementary School. The school faces Lake Avenue and is bordered by Regent Street and Marion Place. Proposed changes may include altering traffic patterns on some of the neighboring streets. Traffic congestion and the safety of students being dropped off and picked up at the school remains the primary concern. Two public

hearings have been held on the matter, and a third is slated to take place Tuesday night, Sept. 17.

Increasing City Council Salaries, Expanding Deputy Residency Requirements to attract Qualified and Diverse Candidates and Appointees The council staged a Public Hearing regarding a Local Law to amend the City Charter as it relates to terms of office, eligibility and salaries of officers. The law seeks to increase the compensation of the elected City Council members from $14,500 per year to $30,000 annually, beginning on Jan. 1, 2020.

Member salaries have not increased since at least 2001, city Mayor Meg Kelly said. “Consider what $14,500 means per year. My average work week is about 50 hours.

That’s $5.58 an hour. Consider that some of us (on the council) work 30 hours – that’s $9.28 an hour.”

Mayor Kelly advised that the Saratoga Springs salary is comparable with that of Mechanicville, which pays its mayor $12,000. “While Mechanicville shares our Commission Form of Government, it only has a population of 5,200 people with limited tax base, tourism, economy,

or destination power,” she said, adding that among 14 comparably sized cities, the average salary paid to the mayor is about $44,500.

“We are entering into a new budget season and the time is right for fair and reasonable discussions about these salaries,” Kelly said. “It is more important than ever to attract talented and diverse candidates. To date, our candidate pool has been largely retirees, the affluent, or people who have the luxury of being supported by a partner’s income… this is a nominal increase aimed at a considerable impact on the quality of our governance.”

The council did not vote on the matter related to their own potential salary increases, but did unanimously approve a resolution that proposes an amendment to state law to expand geographical residency requirements for deputies.

Each of the five council members appoints a deputy.

According to Public Officers Law, all deputies must reside in the city of Saratoga Springs. The council resolution seeks to expand those geographical boundaries to become county-wide.

The current requirement significantly restricts the number of qualified persons available for the administrative positions, the council says. The expanded boundaries would create an opportunity for

council members to seek qualified individuals for positions from anywhere in Saratoga County, and would result in a significant benefit to the public. The proposal seeking an amendment to the existing law will be presented the offices of Sen. Daphne Jordan and Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner for submittal to the State Legislature.

City Approves Six-Year Plan Proposal - Eastside Fire/EMS Facility Tagged a Priority The city’s six-year proposed capital plan, totaling just under $17 million, was unanimously approved Sept. 3 by the council in a 4-0 vote.

Public Safety Commissioner Peter Martin was not present at the meeting.

The plan ranks 36 city projects according to importance with the highest proposed ticketed item being an Eastside Fire/EMS Facility.

The city currently has two stations – one just off Broadway and one on the west side. The potential of an east side facility has been discussed for several years. At present, no land where the station would specifically be sited has been determined. The fire/ems station ranks third highest in order of importance.

The six-year Capital plan is updated annually and varies in accordance with changing priorities and budgetary fluctuations. The city’s Comprehensive Budget is presented annually in late fall.

The training, led by Patrol Sergeant Will Kitts, covered topics such as the Good Samaritan law, how to administer Narcan and what it is actually doing to help.

Kitts said that New York was the first state to adopt a Good Samaritan law back in 2011, which protects people who call the police for a drug overdose.

Specifically, the law protects anyone with less than eight ounces of drugs, who is sharing drugs with someone, minors possessing marijuana or alcohol or possesses drug paraphernalia.

The Good Samaritan Law does not protect people with open arrest warrants, who are violating parole or who have more than eight ounces of drugs.

At the start of Thursday’s training, Captain Morley gave out overdose rescue kits. Each kit looks like a blue bag with various items, such as two doses of Narcan, a rescue breathing face shield and an opioid overdose reporting form among other things.

Only those who gave their name and an email address were officially trained, as the sheriff ’s office keeps track of every overdose rescue kit it provides via a unique identification number.

During the training, Kitts said that Narcan works by blocking the same receptors that opioids bind to, stopping the person receiving Narcan from overdosing.

However, he also mentioned the various issues that result from helping to save the person’s life.

that were formerly overwhelmed by an opioid during the overdose, the person can immediately go into withdrawal and all of the symptoms associated with it.

Additionally, Narcan only lasts 20 to 90 minutes, so if the opioids

are still circulating in the person’s body when the Narcan wears off, they might go into a second bout of overdosing. As a result, Kitts said that someone should still call 911, so that emergency medical care can arrive before the Narcan wears off.

Kitts clarified that Narcan is not dangerous. If a person is not in the middle of an opioid overdose, Narcan does not affect them in any way. It will not help someone who is drunk or high on some other kind of drug, but it will not hurt them, either.

The process of administering Narcan has been simplified over time, to the point that it is now almost foolproof. All it requires is the person trained in administering Narcan peel off the

back of the package to get to the Narcan nasal spray, put the obvious administering end into the other person’s nose then press the plunger to administer the Narcan.

As Kitts said at the end of the training, “if you’ve ever used Flonase, you can use Narcan.”

Captain Morley added that there was an officer on every shift who was trained in administering Narcan and that they would be more than willing to meet anyone anywhere, no questions asked, to give them Narcan training.

OPIOID CRISIS HITS HOME “An Overdose Stops More Than One Heart.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Last Thursday, Aug. 29, Recovery Advocacy in Saratoga (RAIS), held a candlelight vigil in remembrance of everyone who has died of drug overdoses in America.

Maureen Provost, Chairperson of RAIS, said that the vigil was in response to the number of community deaths from drug overdoses, and because International Overdose Day was in a few days, on Saturday, Aug. 31.

The vigil started with various speakers giving their accounts of how overdoses had affected them and their family, starting with Provost, who said that she lost her son in 2004 to a heroin overdose,

and that “an overdose stops more than one heart.”

During her speech, Provost also gave data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, such as how in 2018 overdose deaths were down 2.8%, and attributed the fall to increased access to Narcan, treatment programs and family support navigators.

“We want to spread the message that overdose is preventable and recovery is possible,” Provost said. “As long as an individual is alive, there is hope for recovery.”

Later speeches also mentioned that RAIS meets every third Thursday of the month at Healing Springs Recovery Community and Outreach Center, and that the Grief Recovery sessions were every second Tuesday at the same location.

Brendon Norton of Healing Springs said that the first question when someone comes through the doors at the Center is “how can we help you with recovery today?”

Other speakers included Congressman Paul Tonko, who said “one death is too many, but to look at a number like 17,000, we have a crisis,” and Town Supervisor Tara Gaston, who had gone to the Narcan training held earlier that evening at the PresbyterianNew England Congregational Church to officially be able to administer Narcan to someone who is overdosing, potentially saving their life.

personal, others provided by RAIS, the audience began a chain of assisting each other. Those with lit candles looked around and shared their flame with anyone who needed it.

As the chain continued, RAIS began passing around a microphone so that people could

voice whom they had lost to addiction and overdose. Answers ranged from all of the victims to a sister or father to a close friend, many including the name, year and the drug that killed them.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Laura Farrar-Pileckas opened Violet’s of Saratoga in 2007 as a women’s clothing store, a few doors down from the current location. In 2010, she started Stella’s of Saratoga, a shoe store, in the current location. One year later, in 2011, the two stores combined into the current Violet’s of Saratoga.

“We started off as a women’s clothing store, about a quarter of the size that we are now,” FarrarPileckas said. “We were just trying to bring new, updated fashions to Saratoga at a nice price point, and then we grew as a shop.”

The growth allowed Violet’s to increase inventory and brands. Currently, the store has

approximately 15 core brands, with new material circulating in over time. During peak times, like spring and fall, there is new inventory daily, according to Farrar-Pileckas.

“We quiet down in the wintertime, right after the holidays we’re pretty quiet,” she said. “We do some really good customer appreciation sales and we have a great audience for that. People will come in in the dead of winter and we’ll give them discounts.”

She continued, “so we’ll clean out in the wintertime, and then we’ll be right back up again, fresh and new, in March with the beginning of our spring inventory. Then we’re obviously busy in the summer, so we’re really stocked up for summertime because we have that consistent clientele coming through the door daily, and

then we get another surge of inventory for fall, so this time of year, August, is when our fall merchandise is coming in.”

Farrar-Pileckas also said that this track season has been their best so far. “I’d say there was a little lull the first week,” she said. “Since then, we’ve been going strong.

We’ll see a little bit of quietness this week, and then we’re strong for Labor Day weekend.”

She added that one of the nice things about her clientele is that once track season is over and the dust clears, people will still be back to shop for fall goods.

She said that last year, on opening day for the Travers, power went out in the store due to a blown transformer, which was not an easy or quick fix, taking about five hours to complete. Meanwhile, they had to go about their business with no artificial lights, air conditioning or computers.

“Lots of stuff like that happens all the time, and we never shut our doors,” she said. “We’re open all the time, seven days a week, closed for major holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter.”

When thinking of what it would take for them to close their doors, Farrar-Pileckas said that it would take snow or ice, but then corrected herself to say only ice, because “locals come downtown snowshoeing and they’ll come right in this door. ” “Right now, I’m really enjoying how the system is going,” She said. “We’re constantly communicating with customers and they seem to be enjoying our buying selections and our brands that we offer.”

For the future, Farrar-Pileckas said that she has no specific plans at the moment outside of keeping the status quo, but would love to open a new location.

“I would want to market the same type of store, so I would want to take Violet’s and put it somewhere else,” she said. “So maybe I would change it a little bit to the demographics there, but I wouldn’t want another location on Broadway because I don’t want to compete with myself.”

She said that in the past, they have tried to expand online, but they found they were best at a more face-to-face, brick and mortar type of store. She said “we’ve tried online, but what we really enjoy is the contact with the customer. We don’t really want to be sending stuff all over the place. We really want the customer to be able to come in and enjoy the experience, try the merchandise on and really get that one-on-one experience.”

Farm to School

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Thursday, September 5, marked the first day of the 2019-20 school year. But before school bells chimed, and students filled the halls, the lunchroom staff of Saratoga Springs School District (SSSD) completed their own educational training. The SSSD partnered with Community Cooperative Extension (CCE ) and Pitney Meadow Community Farm (PMCF) with the Farm to School Grant to bring ne healthy recipes to SSSD students.

“The goal is to bring fresh local produce on the trays of students,” said Margaret Sullivan, Lunchroom Director of SSSD. “Today Kevin is going to show us different ways we can incorporate fresh local produce into the student menu. For example, one of the items, he’s going to talk about is roasting fresh tomatoes and incorporating that into the student’s typical tomato soup that’s on their grilled cheese,

which they love! But this way it gives a fresh component, changes of flavor.”

The Seasonal and Healthy Culinary training session was led by chef Kevin London, who has led similar trainings in Warren and Washington County school districts, and his co - chef Kim Klopstock, owner and Chef of Lilly and the Rose. They began the session with the staff having a taste of roasted produce and

homemade hummus to give them an insight as to what they will be learning to make at the training.

“I’m really excited to get my foot in the door with the schools and hopefully be impactful,” said London.

This Farm to School initiative is aimed to benefit the students as well as the community through education, improving general health and well - being and by building a healthy community.

“There’s also other components as part of this grant, so there’s an educational piece where students will take field trips over to Pitney Meadow Community Farm,” said Sullivan.

“They’ll volunteer, students will learn farming. So, it’s a multi layered grant. But our piece of it

is to provide education through harvest of the month and provide the beautiful fresh produce that Pitney is growing for us.”

As the student’s menu changes periodically, so will the many ways students consume fresh and locally sourced produce right here at school.

Maple Avenue’s New Interim Principal SARATOGA SPRINGS — Maple Avenue Middle School welcomes back Bruce Ballan, who will serve as the interim principal of Maple Avenue Middle School.

The district is in the process of hiring a new principal to fill the vacancy left by Jeff Palmer, who was selected as the Director of

CTE for Capital Region BOCES. Mr. Ballan has previously filled leaves of absence at Maple Avenue Middle School and Saratoga Springs High School.

Mr. Ballan worked for 13 years as principal of the Shenendehowa Central School District’s Koda Middle School. Prior to serving

as Koda’s principal, Mr. Ballan was an assistant principal at Shenendehowa’s Gowana Junior High School and in the Ichabod Crane Central School District.

The District expects to have a recommendation for appointment at the Board of Education Meeting on September 10.

District Safety Plan Open Skidmore College Welcomes Class of 2023 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Thirty-two students are learning through participation for Public Comment Skidmore College is welcoming spending their first semester in in cultural and educational SARATOGA SPRINGS — In accordance with state regulations, school districts are required to develop districtwide safety plans. District Wide Safety Plans provide broad concepts, policies and procedures, including the number and types of safety drills to be completed each year.

Plan was previously approved by the Board of Education in May 2019 but is now open for public comment for the next 30 days. After the 30-day comment period, the plan will go to the Board of Education for approval. In addition, a public hearing will be held prior to the Board of Education meeting on September 26.

Galway Public Library Temporarily Closed GALWAY — The Galway Public Library will be closed from August 29 to September 23 to move from the current building to the new location at 2112 East Street in Galway.

A Ceremonial Moving of Books will take place on September 8 at 1 p.m. Participants will form a line, and each will carry

Tire Rack Street Survival: Teen Driver Safety Coming to Saratoga Springs SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Rack Street Survival – Mohawk Hudson Region SCCA is hosting its 16th year teen driver’s safety course in Saratoga Springs.

Tire Rack Street Survival is a nonprofit organization and the largest active nonprofit national driver education program that teaches teens the skills needed to stay safe behind the wheel.

Car crashes are the leading killer of American teens from ages 15-20, with more than 5,000 teens involved in a fatal crash each year and an additional 196,000 injured. Simple driving errors, avoidable but common among inexperienced teens, cause the majority of fatal accidents.

Students will receive a valuable classroom session and then will learn, hands-on, how to manage everyday driving hazards, obstacles and challenges

in a controlled environment on an advanced driving course.

Students learn emergency braking and skid control, how to control proper braking, and how to avoid accidents entirely.

Students are taught in their own cars, not specially prepared program vehicles, so the skills they learn can be directly translated to their daily driving experiences. Tire Rack Street Survival challenges teenagers to understand how to control a vehicle, rather than just operate one.

The Tire Rack Street Survival course will be held at the Saratoga Automobile Museum on Sunday, October 20 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Forms, schedules and more information can be found online at www.streetsurvival.org.

Officious means meddling in other people’s affairs.

They opposed any officious interference with personal matters.

Early September is a time of abundance at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market: Summer squashes, tomatoes, and eggplants are plentiful. Fruits such as peaches, plums, cantaloupes, and watermelons are just coming in.

The harder shelled delicata, acorn, and spaghetti squashes are making their first appearances, giving market goers much to choose from.

With the choices come questions of sweetness and ripeness: Which tomato is sweetest? Will that watermelon be red and juicy when cut, or green and bitter?

There are no easy answers, as one only knows the true taste of such items when they’ve been cut open. And many traditional methods of testing summer produce for ripeness like knocking on melons or squeezing tomatoes are unreliable and potentially damaging.

However, there are a few tricks to determining ripeness.

“Color, feel, and smell,” says Paul Moyer, of Old World Farm, which brings nearly 50 varieties of tomatoes to market. Moyer picks up a tomato and holds it,

“like you would hold a baby or a fragile item that might easily break.” He recommends looking for uniformity in color, touching it very gently for firmness, and smelling it at the base. Similar principles apply to eggplants.

Soft skinned zucchini and summer squash should be firm but not hard and unblemished.

They will spoil quickly so are best used soon after purchase. Harder skinned winter squashes, however, will continue to ripen after harvest and often gain sweetness with time.

Farmers harvest some fruits before they reach full ripeness such as peaches or plums to avoid spoilage. They might be rock hard at market but will soften within a few days if kept in a bowl on a counter away from the sun.

That practice differs, however, for melons, which will remain ripe if picked ripe but will be hard and bitter if harvested too soon, says Ryan Holub, of Scotch Ridge Trees & Berries.

Scotch Ridge sells berries in the summer and fall, and seedlings for backyard gardens in spring.

Among its offerings this year were watermelon plants, which are producing melons now.

“If it twists off the stem easily, it’s ready,” Holub says, adding that a melon picked too soon has little chance of ripening once off the vine.

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 Tablespoons butter*

*Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 1 quart cherry tomatoes* halved, or 3 to 4 slicing tomatoes, diced, or use both

• 4 ears corn (2 cups) fresh kernels* • ¼ cup olive oil* • Salt and freshly ground pepper • ½ loaf crusty bread*

• 1 cucumber* cut into half-moons • 2 cups fresh herbs* (basil, parsley, mint, chives, mint, thyme, rosemary) stemmed, leaves left whole

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Heat the oven to 400 degrees. Toss the corn with 2 Tablespoons of olive oil, a sprinkle of salt and grind of pepper. Spread the corn on a baking sheet and bake until cooked through about 12 to 15 minutes.

2. Cut or tear the bread into pieces and toss with 2 Tablespoons of olive oil, salt and pepper. On another baking pan, spread the bread and bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes.

3. Toss the hot bread with the butter so it melts and coats the bread.

4. Toss the bread with the corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs and salt and pepper. Add a splash of vinegar if needed.

Cucumber Sandwiches Cucumbers are tasty snacks, but if you want something other than cucumber slices dipped in ranch, cucumber sandwiches can be a fun and easy option.

WHAT YOU NEED: • Sandwich-stuffing ingredients: ham, turkey, cheese, tomatoes, toast rounds or cream cheese.

• Large cucumbers, sliced — you can peel them if you’ve got picky eaters who don’t like vegetable skin or use the Veggie Wedgie to help.

Hello my Foodie Friends !

For many of our foodies, this past week involved getting children ready to head back to class with a flurry of activity that also included what to pack for lunch or what type of after school snacks should you offer. Do your children end up eating the same old peanut butter and jelly sandwiches day after day or bring home food you’ve packed uneaten? I do recall this being a challenge for my mother (of five young children) every school year. When we would come in from playing looking for a snack,

or sit to do our homework after school, vegetables such as zucchini or carrot sticks would be sitting on the kitchen table. We would always find a container of sliced vegetables in our lunch boxes, too.

Recently, I was reminiscing with my sister about our childhood friends and us playing Hide N Go Seek in the corn fields next to our neighborhood, the outdoor fun we had, and shared our ongoing challenge of eating those vegetables as adults that we so often were eating as children.

For children (and us adults) who turn up their noses at veggies, make them more appealing by using a Veggie Wedgie by Microplane, to create long, slender carrot peels, or wrap thin slices of

turkey or cheese around celery sticks. Place on a baking sheet, skin side down.

5. Bake 15-20 minutes.

DREYER’S PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC WITH ARTAUD GETS SPECIAL SCREENING AT SPA STATE PARK SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Choral Festival will present Dreyer’s “Passion Of Joan Of Arc” 1928 silent film at the Spa Little Theater at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Silent film organist Peter Krasinki will be a special guest on the program with a live chorus and orchestra members from the Albany Symphony playing the original music by Victor Alix and Leo Pouget.

The Passion of Joan of Arc is a 1928 silent French film based on the actual record of the trial of Joan of Arc. The film was directed

by Carl Theodor Dreyer and stars Renee Jeanne Falconetti as Joan. It is widely regarded as a landmark of cinema. Dreyer's direction and Falconetti's performance is one of the finest in cinema history.

The film summarizes the time that Joan of Arc was a captive of England depicting her trial and execution. Antonin Artaud, best known for conceptualizing a Theatre of Cruelty, plays the monk Massieu. Scenes from the film have appeared in Jean-Luc Godard's “Vivre sa Vie,” and in “Henry and June,” which depicts

the relationship of writers Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin. The original version was lost for decades after a fire destroyed the master negative and only variations of Dreyer's second version were available. In 1981, an employee of the Dikemark Hospital mental institution in Oslo found several film canisters in a janitor's closet that were labeled as being The Passion of Joan of Arc. The canisters were sent to the Norwegian Film Institute where they were first stored for three years until finally being examined. It was then discovered that they were Dreyer's original cut prior to government or church censorship.

Only the reduced full score, string and vocal parts have survived, found in the U.S. Library of Congress. For this performance, the wind parts have been recreated and added.

In 1994, composer Richard Einhorn wrote an oratorio based on the film entitled “Voices of Light", but this original 1928 score has rarely been performed.

Organist Peter Krasinksi is broadly recognized as a

motivating consultant for the pipe organ community whose imaginative and energetic performances elevate and inform audiences. Along with regular concert appearances he specializes in the art of silent film accompaniment worldwide.

He currently serves as Organist at First Church of Christ in providence RI and is a faculty member at St. Paul’s Choir School, Cambridge MA. Opera Saratoga Announces 2020 Summer Festival Programming SARATOGA SPRINGS — Opera Saratoga has announced the three operas that will be featured at the center of the company’s 2020 Summer Festival, to be presented at The Spa Little Theatre in Spa State Park, from June 20 through July 5, 2020.

The 2020 Summer Festival will feature new productions of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, and Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, as well as the New York premiere of a new opera

by Lembit Beecher and Hannah Moscovitch, Sky on Swings, which received its critically acclaimed world premiere in 2018.

“The 2020 Summer Festival continues Opera Saratoga’s commitment to present masterworks from the operatic canon, works that introduce family audiences to the excitement of lyric theater, and important contemporary works,” said Artistic and General Director Lawrence Edelson, in a statement.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s beloved operetta, The Pirates of Penzance, returns to Opera Saratoga in a new, action-packed,

dance-filled production for the entire family. Performance Dates: June 19, 21, 29 and July 4.

Composer Lembit Beecher and Librettist Hannah Moscovitch’s Sky on Swings, which received its critically acclaimed premiere at Opera Philadelphia in 2018, is a riveting musical and theatrical exploration of what it feels like to live with Alzheimer's Disease, as seen through the eyes of two women at different stages in the progression of dementia: Martha, who is far gone in the disease; and Danny, who knows what is happening to her and is in frantic denial. Performance Dates: June 20, 27, and July 2.

Japanese Director Izumi Ashizawa, whose work explores global diplomacy through physical story-telling, unconventional puppetry and object animation, will make her debut with Opera Saratoga next summer, creating a new production of Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.

Ashizawa brings her unique approach to theater, based on Japanese physical performance techniques, to the heartbreaking

story of hope, devotion, and betrayal amidst the cherry blossoms of Nagasaki. Performance Dates: June 26, 28 and July 1, 3.

The festival will also feature multiple concerts and public master classes highlighting the exceptional members of Opera Saratoga’s Young Artist Program, under the direction of Laurie Rogers, who celebrates her tenth anniversary as the program’s director in 2020. These additional events will culminate in a complete performance of Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, conducted by Maestra Rogers, on the final day of the Festival, July 5, 2020.

Saratoga Arts Is Seeking Artists SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Arts is seeking artists to participate in Art in the Park, a full day of fine art in Saratoga Springs’ historic downtown Congress Park, curated and presented by Saratoga Arts.

This exhibition features regional artists displaying and selling their original two and three-dimensional creations and personally-designed and crafted functional fine art. Artists who work in drawing, painting, ceramics,

jewelry, sculpture, photography, print-making, and work in other media are invited to apply.

BALLSTON SPA — A Ballston Spa Native, after working for eight years in the district, Coach Jason Ohnsman has volunteered to be the new head coach of the Ballston Spa Scottie’s varsity football team.

“I’m from Ballston Spa. I graduated here so I hold it pretty close to the chest. I have a lot of pride in my community and this program,” said Coach Ohnsman.

wants to instill that same care for not just the school, but for the town of Ballston Spa among his players. In addition to community consideration, Coach Ohnsman makes it clear that they embody respect for the school, community and each other both on and off the field.

“I have a certain expectation and standard. I was looking for guys that wanted to fulfill that basically,” said Coach Ohnsman.

“I told them I have high expectations and high standards.

I want you guys to meet that. I want you to compete for that.

that doing so is going to help your teammate and help you.”

While football is a priority, Coach Ohnsman wants his players to know that their priorities should be family, school, then football, and he makes a dedicated effort to aid his players in keeping their priorities in check by checking his athlete’s grades on a weekly basis and kick starting their season with a team and family barbeque.

“It’s a privilege to play football.

Football, it’s not a given, it’s not a right. You get those opportunities to put your shoulder pads on and a jersey on. As an alum, I cherish those opportunities. Those are

very important for me for these guys to have those too,” said Coach Ohnsman. “But I’m not going to put anything in jeopardy over that either. You gotta handle what you gotta handle in the classroom.”

For the duration of the season Coach Ohnsman would like the team to plan at least one community service event in season, as well as focus on only the next game ahead.

Coach Ohnsman took to heart a coaching style from his friend Greg O’Conner – former head coach at Schuylerville – that the “most important game is the next one.”

Wagering from all-sources totaled $705,343,949 a staggering increase of more than $46 million, or 7 percent, over last year when racing was conducted for the full 40 days during a six-day week.

This year’s handle eclipsed the previous record set in 2017 by nearly $29 million or 4.2 percent.

The milestone record was achieved despite the cancellation of a full racing card on the second Saturday of the season due to extreme heat, in addition to the cancellation of the final seven races on July 25 due to severe storms.

The record was also set during a season in which the Saratoga calendar was reconfigured to include a five-day race week, a departure from the traditional six days, and the earliest opening in modern history. The change was made to accommodate construction of a new arena for the New York Islanders at Belmont Park.

Average daily handle for the 2019 Saratoga meet was $18,085,742, an increase of 9.8 percent over the 2018 average daily handle of $16,477,086.

We would not be in this enviable position without the dedication of the owners, the talent of the horsemen, and the unmatched enthusiasm of our fans. “This summer also marked the loss of one of Saratoga’s most ardent benefactors, Mrs. Marylou Whitney. Saratoga and NYRA

will forever be grateful for her contributions to racing.”

Klaravich Stables was the meet’s leading owner with 19 wins. Chad Brown defended his H. Allen Jerkens training title with 41 wins. Jockey Jose Ortiz claimed the Angel Cordero, Jr. riding title with 60 wins.

The 2019 season witnessed several other highwater marks, including record all-sources handle of $31,835,863 on Whitney Day and $52,129,344 on Travers Day. This year’s banner Travers Day coincided with the 150th edition of the Grade 1, $1.25 million Runhappy Travers, which aired for the first time on the FOX broadcast network and was watched by more than 1.3 million viewers nationwide.

Saratoga’s record handle can also be attributed, in part, to the unabated growth and popularity of Saratoga Live, NYRA’s highlyacclaimed and award-winning television program. Distributed to a nationwide audience across FS2, Saratoga Live featured more than 190 hours of live programming this season compared to 80 hours when the broadcast was first introduced in 2016. FS2, part of the Fox family of networks, carried full-card coverage during most of the meet’s

39 racing days. NYRA’s investment in content and distribution has been rewarded with an increase in year-over-year viewership of more than 140 percent.

This year’s Whitney Day celebrated the life and legacy of Mrs. Marylou Whitney, the beloved owner, breeder and philanthropist who passed away earlier in the meet.

by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who announced plans to build the Marylou Whitney Backstretch Pavilion, a permanent structure on the Oklahoma training grounds to house the Saratoga Backstretch Appreciation program. Launched more than a decade ago by Mrs. Whitney and her husband, John Hendrickson, the program provides meals, entertainment and support for thousands of backstretch workers.

On the eve of Whitney Day, NYRA officially dedicated the Clubhouse entrance in Mrs. Whitney’s honor. Fans each summer will now pass through the “Marylou Whitney Entrance” upon their arrival at Saratoga Race Course.

A total of $5,379,911 was wagered on closing day of the Empire 6 for a total pool size of $6,173,478 which included the jackpot carryover.

Monday’s five figure payout of $23,794 rivaled several other large Empire 6 payouts over the course of the meet including: $37,064 on August 21; $25,145 on August 14 and $12,547 on August 18.

The 2019 season saw the successful debut of the newest hospitality venue at Saratoga Race

Course: the 1863 Club. Constructed over the course of only 10 months, the 36,000-square-foot, threestory, climate-controlled building welcomed thousands of fans who experienced its modern amenities and sweeping views and sightlines of the track during its inaugural season.

Total paid attendance for the 2019 Saratoga meet was 1,056,053 over 39 days, marking the fifth consecutive season that paid attendance has exceeded one million fans.

JUNIOR DIVISION PLAY-OFFS QUARTER FINALS Goodemote Physical Therapy 31 – Olsen Associates 22 With the score 24 to 20 with 6 minutes to go in the contest Goodemote Physical Therapy played great defense allowing Olsen Associates just 2 points the rest of the game and won the game 31 to 22. The therapists got 11 points from John Gerardi, 8 points from Liam Brennan and 4 points from Owen Brown.

Saratoga PBA 35 – The Barrelhouse 34 The Barrelhouse almost pulled off the biggest upset of the season but fell just one basket short and lost to Saratoga PBA by a score of 35 to 34. Both teams put up strong defenses and as the score shows it was an exciting battle to the end. The PBA team was led by Noah Diulio’s 13 points while teammates Ethan Calderon and Tasiah LaDore scored 8 point apiece. The Barrelhouse’s Ian scored a game high 16 points with Brycen Panis getting 4 points and Gavin Harple contributing 2 points, 9 rebounds and strong defensive play.

WILTON — On Monday, September 9 at 11 a.m. Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Park will be holding one of the bi-monthly Wellness Walks.

This is a great opportunity to enjoy the trails during the last few weeks of summer. The Wellness Walk is geared towards gentle exercise and the enjoyment of nature and will be accessible for participants at basic fitness levels.

The walk will depart from the Old Gick Trailhead located off of Route 50, north of King Road.

Registration is appreciated as the program could be cancelled if there is bad weather.

The Wellness Walks are a

bi-monthly activity with the next walk scheduled on September 23 at the Neilmann Trailhead off of Ruggles Road.

A Look at the 10th Annual Run for the Horses 5K SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saturday, August 31, 300 runners, walkers and their canine companions joined rescued and retired racehorses at the Orenda Pavilion in Saratoga Spa State Park. This unique, family friendly event featured a Kids Fun Run, a canine division and former racehorses. The objective was to raise awareness about racehorse aftercare and raise funds to benefit racehorse rescue and retirement organizations, and to have a good time running through beautiful Saratoga Springs.
