Welcome to the 20th Annual

Saratoga Festival of Trees

t’s hard to believe that this is the 20th Festival of Trees. The first event was held in 1995, the risky and ambitious brain child of Peter Crowley and Tom Smith, then Board members of the agency, earlier known as Catholic Family and Community Services of Saratoga County. The Board enthusiastically took on this new venture with the dual goal of raising much needed discretionary dollars for underfunded programs and services, while inaugurating a festive holiday event to be enjoyed by the whole community. The first year we hoped for a $10,000 profit and made $21,000. The rest is history. Our profit continued to grow as did the Festival’s features. The constant, ever unchanging reason for our success, however, has been the unwavering generosity and commitment of festival volunteers as well as the business community, many of whom have shared time, talent and treasure from the very beginning. To them a very special “thank you.” Many less fortunate among of us have reaped the benefits of this wonderful holiday event.

And so it is with a spirit of increased consciousness of the blessings in our lives that we invite you to enjoy this creative holiday fantasy of delightfully decorated trees, wreaths, and centerpieces. Please stop at our raffle table, shop at the Holiday Store and join us for Breakfast with Santa on Saturday – a fun filled day of children’s activities in Santa’s Workshop. Returning again this year is the exquisite miniature Circus, Carnival and Train exhibit built over a 40 year period and presented by its owner, Don Erlenbusch. May the many magical moments of this year’s festival fill our spirits with the peace and joy of the Christmas season. Behind the scenes, scores of dedicated volunteers spent countless hours planning and preparing for this magical event to be enjoyed by the entire community. For them we are most grateful. Thank you also to our many sponsors who have generously supported our efforts and to the creative donors of the myriad of items of holiday décor. Catholic charities

Catholic Charities of

Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties The Saratoga Festival of Trees is the largest fundraiser supporting the programs and services offered by Catholic Charities of Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties. Engaging the energies of the tri- county communities, Catholic Charities has become a vital part of life for many individuals and families in the region. During 2014, over 6,000 individuals were served by the agency. These services were provided by 49 staff. In addition, 300 volunteers gave 27,500 hours of their time.

Programs and Services offered by Catholic Charities: • Counseling – Individual, couple and family counseling and group support. This program provided 3,757 hours of mental health services to 1,793 individuals including 535 children 1,202 adults and 56 elderly. • Domestic Violence Project – Shelter, counseling, crime victim services, advocacy, education, 24 hour hotline services for victims of domestic violence and their children in Warren and Washington counties. In 2014, 583 adults and 263 children came were served in our programs. A total of 2,511 bed-nights were provided in the safe shelter. In addition, 2,000 individuals received education and prevention services. • Donovan House – Ballston Spa community-based residential group home program for adolescent boys that provided 13 boys a cumulative 1,895 days of care last year. • Mary’s Haven – A community home for the dying serving persons with irreversible illness, who are in the last three months of their lives and who no longer can remain safely in their homes. In 2014, we served 22 families and provided 410 bed-nights to the terminally ill.

• NOEP (Nutrition Outreach and Education Program) provided outreach and education to low income households in Warren County about the benefits of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program. 155 households were assisted in applying for and receiving SNAP program benefits. • Services to the Elderly were provided to 280 older adults. • Emergency Services were provided to 1186 individuals in the tri-county region. The programs and services of Catholic Charities are available to anyone in Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties and always accompanied by information, referral and advocacy as needed. Individuals are never refused services because of their inability to pay. Pick Up:

Pick up time for small trees, wreaths, and centerpieces is 3:30–4:30 p.m. on Sunday December 6. The Saratoga Festival of Trees cannot be responsible for items not picked up on time.

Tree Delivery:

Trees will be delivered free of charge within a 10-mile radius of Saratoga Springs beginning Sunday, December 6. Upon purchase, please inform the sales table of the best time for delivery.

recalls Tom Roohan as he remembers the countless business leaders and volunteers that came together to build Mary’s Haven, a home managed by Catholic Charities for people in the last months of their lives. “When it comes to philanthropy, people often stop because they think, ‘I don’t have any money.’ Mary’s Haven wasn’t built with money,” shares Tom. “It was built with time, effort, and a little sweat equity. I called on plumbers, electricians, architects, builders, landscapers, and more…together we built something special through service.” Tom Roohan’s community service closely reflects the history of Saratoga Springs. Organizations he has touched range from NYRA, The YMCA, and AAA, to Saratoga Central Catholic, the Saratoga County Chamber of

Commerce, the Saratoga Special Assessment District, the Saratoga Hospital Foundation, and more. But the roles he has played – director, trustee, advisor, president – aren’t what he talks about. “It’s not a flashy title that helps move a community forward,” said Tom, “it’s hard, hands-on work. Writing a check is generous and thoughtful. But, that’s not how we grow together. Everyone has to step out and be visible for Saratoga to flourish.” Tom is the owner of Roohan Realty, one of the most successful real estate companies in Saratoga. From the adaptive reuse of historic properties, to mixed-use development and residential real estate sales of all shapes and sizes, the team at Roohan Realty has contributed significantly to the growth of this community. But, despite the hundreds of properties that come through the office every year, those that make Tom proud are a little different.

“When I drive by Mary’s Haven, I remember everyone that came together to make it possible. I’m humbled when someone comes to me to say their loved one was comfortable in the last days of their lives thanks to Catholic Charities, Hospice, and the space at Mary’s Haven,” said Tom. “All of our Rebuilding Together Saratoga projects are great memories as well. Good people coming together to lend a hand – that’s how we build a strong Saratoga.” Joe Dalton, another long-term community leader, said of Tom, “Many individuals join an organization to provide oversight. Tom joins to quietly lead and set an example for others. Whether it’s swinging a hammer, raising money, or lending his expertise, you can count on Tom to be there. It is an honor to be considered his friend.” Tom’s friends are part of the family he brings to work every day. Just walk into Roohan Realty and you’ll find siblings, children, and cousins – even Tom’s mother, Peppie, stops by to lend a hand. In fact, Tom’s daughter, Mary Hallquist, recently moved back to Saratoga. Her son, Jack, and daughter, Maggie, are quickly learning the impact their grandfather has had.

“This place is special. Being here means walking my son and daughter along the same streets where my family and I used to get up at 6:00 a.m. to put out flags on Flag Day. It means being part of a place that you love. And, it means being closer to my father, a man who deserves all the recognition in the world but would never ask for it,” said Mary. “I’m so proud to be his daughter and for my children to grow up surrounded by people who are making a difference.” Weekends planting flowers at the 9/11 memorial, evenings eating spaghetti dinners or chicken barbeque to benefit boy scouts and St. Clements – Tom, wife Kristie, children, grandchildren, and the Roohan Realty team are always the first in line to support those that need it. But, without a doubt, the power of their volunteerism is felt most at the Saratoga Festival of Trees. Sister Charla Commins, Executive Director of Catholic Charities said, “Tom Roohan, longtime friend of Catholic Charities, has been a major supporter of the Festival of Trees from the very beginning. His financial contributions, his encouragement of staff involvement, 30 | Saratoga Christmas | 2015

and his willingness to help wherever needed has been invaluable. The Roohan Realty crew is integral to the Festival’s success and thus our ability to better serve those in need in the tri-county communities. I am enormously grateful for Tom’s involvement and commitment to this multi-faceted endeavor.” The Annual Saratoga Festival of Trees is the largest fundraiser for Catholic Charities of Saratoga, Warren, and Washington Counties. Each year, thousands of people come through the Saratoga Springs City Center to tour and purchase beautifully decorated trees, wreaths, and centerpieces. Proceeds from the event help to ensure Catholic Charities can continue to offer its much-needed programs like those at Mary’s Haven, Counseling Services, the Domestic Violence Project, Donovan House, the Saratoga Mentoring Program, Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP), Emergency Services and more. Keeping the show running smoothly is done, in part, by the integral actions of many of those at Roohan Realty. Chairing committees, fundraising, finding sponsors, saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

setting up the trees, managing the events, even scooping hundreds of Stewart’s ice cream sundaes for Family Day – they engage wholeheartedly in the spirit that makes the show possible. Earline Johnson, a long-time Roohan Realty agent, is a member of Catholic Charities’ Board of Directors and has been on the Festival’s Steering Committee since day one. “The entire team here does incredible work. But, truly, it comes back to Tom. His willingness to roll up his sleeves and jump right in sets the tone. Quite literally… he hops right into the Santa suit!” This year will be the 20th anniversary of the Festival of Trees. In 20 years, the event has entertained thousands and the proceeds have been a blessing for thousands more. While much has changed since 1995, one thing remains the same – the support of Tom Roohan. “It’s the Saratoga way,” Tom said. “This is a community that gives and gives because it cares. We stand up for ourselves and invest in our people. We’re tied together by a location but we all know there’s something bigger, something special here.”

will be held on Thursday, December 3rd at 6:00 pm, to kick off the Victorian Streetwalk! Caroling by the Girl Scouts around the tree will start at 5:45, then at 6:00, the Honorable Mayor Joanne Yepsen lights the trees and we countdown for the arrival of…

Santa and Mrs. Claus!

They will be arriving with many elves and even Rumple Dumple to the beautiful, hand-made and detailed Santa Cottage that is set up in front of Putnam Market & Putnam Wine, just across from Caroline Street… to usher in the holiday season! While waiting to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus… enjoy free hot chocolate and cookies, donated by the Hungry Spot, Putnam Market and Gaffney’s. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there till 10 pm to give everybody time to stop by and visit!

Everyone is invited to join the fun with caroling and Victorian costumes and enjoy an old fashioned "Christmas as it used to be" street party and celebration of the holiday season. There are over 35 sites with free entertainment, including fiddlers, hammered dulcimer, a cappella singing, choral singing, saxophone, crystal glasses, a brass group, balloons, ballet dancers, live reindeer, Santa and Mrs. Claus, Festival of Trees at the City Center, special Downtown Business Association Coupon Books, everyone’s favorite Snowman, Norwegian Princess and Ice Queen, face painting, Newfoundland dogs, and the list goes on and on. Have a group photo taken at Impressions with A Victorian Print Giveaway. Nacre Dance Company and Octavo Singers will delight audiences of all ages as they combine talents at the Universal Preservation Hall at 7:30pm and 8:15pm.

Getting There / Parking:

Broadway will close once again from 5:00 to 10:00 from the Route 50 arterial to the Spring Street intersection for the festivities. CDTA, a festival Gold Sponsor, is running FREE shuttle buses every 20 minutes from the Empire State College parking lot at 111 West Avenue on Saratoga Springs’ west side. You can also get the shuttle at the Silver Sponsor, NYRA Oklahoma track (just off Exit 14 of I-87) and the Weible Avenue Skating Rink parking lots on the east side of Saratoga Springs. The shuttles run from 4:30 to 10:30 .

Most businesses will be open until 10 p.m. and will hold open houses and serve delicious, free refreshments to their guests, friends and customers.

I still remember the first time I worked with Susan and the lasting impression she made. I was a young board member trying to prove myself and produced the publication that answered the question… “Why should I join the DBA?” I immediately sought the advice of the most passionate person in the room and left thinking to myself “I want to be her when I grow up!” Twenty years later I am still just as impressed with Susan and I love working alongside her to make downtown Saratoga Springs a destination worthy of national attention. She just said to me on the phone yesterday “you were just a baby when I met you!” …oh, how this job ages a person! To honor this Saratoga icon, I asked Arthur to gather some thoughts from her closest comrades and pull together a montage of experiences and stories that accurately reflect the people that helped to shape downtown. We met Susan too many years ago to mention! It was most likely at the Victorian Streetwalk and this event will forever be linked in our minds to her. She has been a big part of making downtown Saratoga Springs the desirable place it is today. If there is an event planned in the downtown area, you can be sure that Susan had a hand in its organization! I have many fond memories of sitting around a work table - gluing, cutting, wiring, and fluffing - how many thousands of tree ornaments for the downtown Holiday Trees over the years. Of course the laughs and wine certainly helped the hours pass! The memories of moving the Santa Cottage and sprucing it up holds many a fond memory as well! I was privileged to serve on the DBA Board of Directors with Susan for many years. We started working together when I was President of our fledgling Downtown Business Association, but it was our collaborative effort to establish Victorian Streetwalk that bonded us for life. We were excited, nervous and determined to prove the naysayers wrong. What, you think it’s strange to throw an outdoor party in the winter in upstate New York? Somedays, we were like teenagers who left the phone off the hook so we could just yell, “are you there?” when a brainstorm came to mind. Mind you this was BEFORE email! Lovingly called the “Dynamic Duo”, we found it easier to do it ourselves than by committee. To this day, I only work on fundraisers and events that way. The town leaders were supportive, even if secretly they thought we were nuts. Charlie Wait did not hide when he saw me walk into the bank, but certainly had to wonder, “Uh oh, what do they want now?” Bill Dake donated Stewart’s cider I believe and I suspect that they have been involved in every street fair since. Mark Baker offered his support and help with logistics (not our long suit) and the Godfather of the special Assessment District, Norman Fox gave us his seal of approval. Tommy McTygue helped us with snow removal when necessary, police patrol and other issues as they arose. We paid the acts with gift certificates we begged from fellow merchants. We established a long and wonderful relationship with the family that ran the horse drawn carriages. Susan and I continued to work on the Streetwalk year after year, refining the concept and adding elements until I relocated to Florida in 2000. In all those years, Susan and I never had a cross word between us. But there was a lot of laughter and copious amounts of champagne to celebrate.

I first met Susan through the Saratoga 150 Celebration committee. In honor of the Saratoga Race Course¹s 150th ann iversary season. SPAC hosted the hon orary kick-off event, a commemorative picn ic on the lawn. Susan worked in tand em with Ed and Maureen Lewi to bring the event to life. At one point, Susan had to be the referee between Maureen Lew i and Joe Dalton, who both wanted to run this huge community event in “their way.” Of course, Maureen won out in the end ‹and Joe learned that sometimes it takes a woman. In fact, this marine would admit that most times it takes a wom an!) Ultimately, the evening included an old-fashioned picnic supper, youth danc e groups, storytellers, a variety of family activities and contests, and conclude d with a spectacular fireworks display. The Saratoga 150 Celebration was vibrant and exciting as our community came toge ther to remember the Track¹s rich histo ry. Susan was incredible to work with. She was very energetic, inspiring, dynami c, professional, and passionate ‹not only about Saratoga and all that it encompa sses, but genuinely passionate about the peop le that she met and worked with.) There are moments in life when you appreciate someone so much that you just want to stop and tell them. Feeling grat itude and not expressing it is like wrap ping a present and not giving it. I cannot remember when I first met Susan, but we worked most closely on Victorian Streetwalk because I built the Santa cottage when Bob and I took over the role as Santa and Mrs. Claus. What strikes me about Susan most, is her work ethic. Susan never just “did her job.” The end result of any job or assignment given to her was never good enough or adequate for Susan. As a matter of fact...”good enough” was never “good enough” for Susan! What an asset she has been to our organization, who among us would not want an employee whose work ethic was that it had to be as good as it could possibly be....or else you were not done yet!! That was Susan’s work ethic. We would meet in my shop along with several DBA members to make the ornaments for the Christmas tree. We were delighted that several other DBA members found some volunteer time to help. It was fun… we’d drink wine, listen to rock and roll music and make Christmas tree ornaments... Just us girls! Throughout the course of the evening we made about 200 ornaments and it was work as much as fun. What you probably don’t realize is that 200 Christmas tree ornaments didn’t go very far since we had 2 Christmas trees now instead of just one and they were growing very rapidly – they were tall! Susan didn’t hesitate to come back over the next night and again and again until her and I had made enough ornaments to fully decorate both trees (probably around 400.) There was her work ethic again. If the job needed to be done, she was there to help do it. I am still looking for the CUTEST Susan Farnsworth photo ever… (Editor: SHE FOUND IT! - see page 46.) In the beginning of the VSW we did not have a lot of elves, but we always had a toy soldier. As luck would have it, Susan fit perfectly into the beautiful red toy soldier suit I had made for myself when I was much younger (and smaller!). It wasn’t very warm either, but she “soldiered on” anyway because it needed to be done. One more funny moment… Susan and I were discussing a new event the DBA was going to have. We now know it as the fall festival. She wanted to include an event that would really include little children. She said something like… “Well we can’t just roll them down the hill” ...and I said “Why not! Let the kids just roll them down the hill, so what if one breaks, it’ll be fun.” We laughed at the thought of just letting kids roll pumpkins down Caroline Street… and they’re still rolling them today!

I met Susan at the 2nd Victorian Streetwalk in 1987, my husband and I had just arrived in Saratoga Springs, living downtown in the Skidmore Apts., waiting for our house to be built. We discovered the magical Streetwalk and a lovely lady (Susan) with a clip board and camera… calmly making sure everything was OK. Over the years I would see Susan at different community and art events and realized she was the “go to” lady for names of musicians and performers. She had everyone’s contact info and never forgot a face or name. Happily I worked with Susan at the DBA Fall Festival and SaratogaArtsFest for many years. Never late for any meeting, Susan was always calm and focused while taking detailed notes in her little black book. She was the total professional to work with and also a “fun bowling buddy.” I would describe my friend Susan Farnsworth as a “class act.” She will be missed in Saratoga Springs, but will bring her charm and knowledge to another lucky community. One more thought… “Susan, I want your little black book!”

and all of the Lifestyles team. I first “saw” Susan in the mid 80’s when an image of her was part of a photo contest in the Sunday paper. I didn’t know her at the time, but my favorite photo was one of a very pregnant Susan laughing hysterically at her young stepson who was pushing out his big-brother belly next to hers. I loved the image! About four years later, I was asked to design a map for Saratoga’s Downtown Business Association. I met with Susan and that photo was hanging on her wall! It was taken when she was pregnant for her son, David. I was amazed that I remembered it so vividly! It was as though we were destined to raise our children together in Saratoga and become the best of friends. Soon I relocated from Schenectady to Saratoga, opened Creative Sparks Pottery and joined the board of the DBA. I worked on any event Susan asked me to. Her enthusiasm was infectious and her organizational skills made every project a joy! The board decided to organize a “Fall Festival” to bring people downtown between the racing and Christmas seasons and I volunteered to be the coordinator. We had no budget so events had to be cheap and easy to execute downtown. After a late night planning session, we experimented with rolling pumpkins down Caroline Street hill just to see what would happen. It was hilarious and has become one of the signature events of the Annual Fall Festival. This is just one event that Susan has helped grow from a simple idea to a hugely successful event. While there are no bronze statues or granite staircases in her honor, Susan Farnsworth is as much part of the history of Saratoga as the Trasks and Putnams. Her dedication to the success of the businesses here has helped us all flourish and is one of the main reasons that Downtown Saratoga is a Great American Main Street. Her devotion to the causes we support and the festivals we offer has set a standard of quality that brings crowds back year after year. Our memories are full of song, sparkle and smiles because of Susan’s hard work and discerning criteria for what we offer. Susan’s retirement is bittersweet, but she promises to keep in touch and visit often. We’re not saying good bye, we’re just wishing her a long and healthy retirement with the best of times ahead.

Susan and I met in 1998 at a DBA meeting at Longfellows. I thought she was so nice and she made me feel a part of something. I joined the board as a member and moved up to secretary, VP and President throughout the years. She made all those transitions so easy. We have worked together on the Travers Children’s Festival, Fall Fest, Tree Lighting, Hi Neighbor, Skidmore Family Weekend and many more small events during the four years that I was the DBA president. Susan and I have become very close over the years. She is the person I lean on and I am a sounding board for her. We talk almost every day and can find humor in so many stories. I am so happy for her to be moving on with Michi but sad that I won¹t have her near me all the time. We already have apps on our phones downloaded so we can talk all the time when she is in Israel. A friendship like this doesn¹t end just because there are a few thousand miles between us. I have to share this funny story: I am really afraid of clowns and we had to hire a white-faced clown for the Children¹s Parade every year. At the end of the event, when it was time to pay the vendors…. There was this scary clown staring at me (wanting to kill me in my opinion) waiting for his check. The look of panic formed as I hesitantly walked over there. Susan stopped me, took the check and said “Here sweetie I will pay him, you go make popcorn.” She saved the day!! Ok not so dramatic, but to me she was my clown-death savior.

I think the first time I met Susan she was with Martha Margolis - what a pair they made! They both could win you over with their confidence and sweet talk. Since those days, decades ago, Martha has moved to Florida, and luckily Susan has stayed with us and the community she loves. Whenever I think of Susan, the image of the cute toy soldier at the Victorian Streetwalk comes to mind. She has been in the lead of that effort, which is now a tradition in our city. When the NYRA asked the Chamber to organize events to celebrate the opening and closing of the track’s expanded season, I turned to Chamber staff and Susan, to organize the details of over a dozen music venues, over four nights on the opening and closing weekends. Susan has been the heart and muscle of the downtown business association for decades - her outside services to her community range from the arts to public relations. She has volunteered for the July Arts Festival, and served with me on locating the 9/11 memorial sculpture, and the Saratoga City Center board of directors. When Susan begins on a new trail it will be a great loss to Saratoga and in my opinion it will be impossible to replace the class, enthusiasm, and caring she has given to our community. For over 29 years Susan Farnsworth has dedicated her career to the success and vitality of Downtown Saratoga Springs. Susan has been the cornerstone and the face of The Downtown Business Association. Susan has championed many efforts in the support of our downtown and our members and we thank her for all her commitment and dedication. Susan’s steadfast commitment to Downtown Saratoga Springs’ success has been seen in many areas of great accomplishment, from Victorian Streetwalk, Christmas Tree Lighting, Fall Festival, Arts Festival, Hats off and Final Stretch to name a few.
