Handmade Shrubs and Bitters - Raise your glass!
W
hen it comes to hosting an outdoor gathering, simplicity is the name of the game during the summer. Make your mark with a signature cocktail or mocktail using The Hudson Standard small-batch shrubs and bitters. Shrubs originate from a Colonial American tradition of blending fruit, spice, vinegar and sweetener to make a tart and delicious syrup. The Hudson Standard shrubs are made using organic apple cider vinegar from the Finger Lakes region. Use them as cocktail mixers, add them to seltzer for a refreshing natural soda, or spike your lemonade for a flavor punch.

Alphabet Art Cards by CLP Design Studio - Art Designed for Kids
I
t is no coincidence that almost every pre-school and kindergarten classroom is decorated with alphabet cards. Alphabet cards encourage a strong set of pre-reading skills; when children are exposed to a variety of ways to learn letters and the sounds they make it helps build essential early literacy skills. Being able to carry this concept over into a room in your house will reinforce what children are learning in school. When photographer Eric Seplowitz and his wife began searching for inspirational room decor for their children, they felt anything but inspired by what they found. Wanting something gender neutral and something that could grow along with a child, Eric decided to use his photography skills to create something he could not find in stores. Along with CLP Design Studio partner and graphic designer Brenda Shih, they created Alphabet Art Photo Cards. Printed on sustainably forested paper with childsafe inks and no laminates, each letter is accompanied by a beautiful photograph and word, written in a font easily interpreted by young readers. These cards are both educational and visually appealing making them a beautiful addition to any child's bedroom or playroom.
Shop: Alphabet Art Photo Cards $28 per box are available at

Sunshine and Smiles: Send Someone a Smile Today!
A
t first glance, a Sunshine and Smiles gift box, while filled with thoughtful, sweet and playful treats, may not seem like something you would need someone else to put together for you. However with a few kids in tow, making three or four different stops at stores, taking the time to put together the contents and arranging for delivery becomes a daunting task very quickly. So much so that even with the best of intentions we often end up not doing anything at all. That's where Heather Courtney and her boxes of Sunshine and Smiles comes in. After sending a box of goodies to cheer up a friend who was going through a difficult time, Heather realized what a small gesture it took to help put a smile on someone's face. Heather loves making people smile and laugh and puts her heart into creating cheerful boxes that will give someone a little extra sunshine when needed. While Heather loves putting together her own boxes of sunshine and smiles she is also happy to work with her customers to create a custom made box.

RAD Soap - Hand Crafted Body Care Made Locally
I
t’s hard not to be drawn in to RAD Soap’s artfully packaged products with names like “Kryptonite Body Bar” “Man Up Body Butter” and “Shuga Bubs Moon Candy”. Behind the clever names and fun packaging are some truly amazing and effective products. Here’s a story we all can relate to, one that is fueled by a mother’s love and desire to give her child the best. In early 2009, after searching high and low for a natural product to relieve her son’s eczema, Sue Kerber created her own products using natural ingredients. That entrepreneurial spirit led to the birth of the RAD Soap Co.
I had tried some RAD Soap products in the past, but had never experienced the Shuga Bubs body scrub. Unlike most sugar scrubs which feel dry, the Shuga Bub scrub lathers like a bar of soap to gently moisturize while exfoliating. The Moonbeam products smell amazing and the scent of sweet black currant stays on your skin nearly all day. The thick and nourishing body butter is a family-favorite. RAD’s Natural Insect Repellent is crafted with a proprietary blend of essential oils and is effective against ticks, mosquitos, gnats, lice, ants, and flies. With a fresh scent, and safe ingredients, this repellent is perfect for kids and adults.

Downtown Saratoga Springs
Congress Park is a gorgeous and historic park in the middle of downtown Saratoga. I love having a park like this in the middle of downtown because it’s fun to grab food or ice cream and head to the park for some people-watching on a nice day. With duck ponds, grassy meadows, historic landmarks and a wooden carousel (which opens for the season in mid May), Congress Park is a great meeting place, picnic spot, or people-watching destination. In July and August, Congress Park is home to live music concerts, arts and crafts festivals, and other special events. Plan it! Pack a picnic blanket from home and pick up lunch at one of you favorite downtown Saratoga lunch spots. Enjoy an afternoon picnicking in the park!

Malta Ecological Park
476 Malta Avenue, Ballston Spa Playgrounds are great, but sometimes it’s nice to get out and just enjoy nature. A great spot for this is the Town of Malta Ecological Park. It’s located on Malta Ave about two miles off of Route 9 heading toward downtown Ballston Spa. The Malta Ecological Park has a couple miles of wooded trails with a few bridges and a little pond. There’s a big field you can walk to, which would be great for a picnic lunch. Along the trails are nice descriptive nature signs to add an educational element. Stroller mama’s, it’s best to use a jogger or all-terrain here because the trails aren’t paved. Plan ahead, no bathrooms here! Summer 2016 | SaratogaMama | 17

Hudson Crossing Park
236 Plains Road, Malta
126 US-4, Schuylerville
Hudson Crossing Park is located just outside Schuylerville on NY Historic Scenic Byway, Route 4. This park is a nice change of pace from a traditional playground. The area for kids is called the ‘Play Garden’. Many of the ‘play’ items are built into nature and include stumps to jump, a rock maze/labyrinth to navigate, tunnels to crawl through, sand and dirt ‘drums’ for playing, a couple slides built into the landscape and a boat to explore. The play garden area has a nice pavilion for lunch and a generously-sized porta potty. The park itself also has some hiking trails and the Champlain Canal Lock is kind of an attraction in itself. It’s a bit of a drive to get there, about 20 minutes outside of Saratoga, but it is worth a visit.

Summer Skin

Summer is finally here and the beautiful weather we have waited for all winter has arrived! With the long, sunny days and sheer variety of outdoor activities we are so fortunate to enjoy, it is all too easy to forget to take care of your skin. Here are some tips to help you enjoy the summer while still optimizing your skin care routine. Sunscreen
remains by far the most important element of your skin care regimen to help reduce the signs of aging and prevent skin cancer. It is never too early to start taking care of and protecting your skin! Your sunscreen should be rated at a minimum SPF 30 and while foundations with SPF may be adequate for daily activities, if more intense sun exposure is expected, a pure sunscreen should be applied prior to your foundation or tinted moisturizer.
Layering Products I am often asked if it is important to apply various skin products in any particular order. It is! Skin should first be gently cleansed. All products work best when applied to clean, bare skin. Anti-aging products and serums should be applied first; examples include anti-oxidants such as Vitamin A and C, growth factors and peptides. A layer of moisturizer may follow if needed. Sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 would be next. Foundation or tinted moisturizer to provide a dewy, glowing finish is the final step. Not all steps must always be followed, but the order is important to optimize effectiveness, and I always advise sunscreen! Exfoliation provides another great way to get that healthy and glowing look for your skin. I like the Clarisonic face brush twice a week or as often as tolerated after cleansing and then follow the steps as described above.
Your evening routine should function to repair damage that may have occurred during the day. During sleep, the skin is able to regenerate collagen and elastin more effectively. A 2-3 times per week or nightly application of a Vitamin A cream (examples include Retinol, Retin A, Renova) applied to a clean face is the best way to maximize the skin’s regenerative potential. A moisturizer of your choice may follow. It is safe to use Vitamin A creams during the summer months as long as sunscreen is applied during the day.
Finally, don’t neglect your décolletage (the delicate neck and chest area), lips, backs of hands, and scalp. These often forgotten regions are very prone to the effects of sun damage and will definitely give away your age if not protected in a manner similar to your face. Sunscreen sprays and wipes work nicely for the scalp and here in Saratoga, a hat is always appropriate! SaratogaMama.com

Choosing the right birthday party location can be quite a challenge. If you’re looking for something special and unique, The Learning Center at Healthy Living Market is the place! Chef-Instructor and Learning Center Coordinator Kiya McIntyre expertly hosted our seven very excited kids and helped create a memorable party experience. After learning about proper cutting techniques, each child cut some veggies for their own pizzas. They were then given some fresh dough to knead and form into a pizza shape. They each got to spread sauce, sprinkle cheese, and top their pizza with the veggies of their choice. Kiya enthusiastically convinced all of the kids to try at least two veggies and they all obliged!

While the pizzas were baking, each child got to decorate their very own chef’s hat with crayons, markers, and stickers. Once the pizzas were finished in the oven it was time to eat and enjoy. There was plenty leftover for the mom’s to sample and we all happily indulged. The Learning Center included all the right elements for a simple and easy birthday party. The food was (well!) taken care of, the kids enjoyed the activity of making their own food and chef’s hats, the mess was contained to The Learning Center (sorry Healthy Living!!), and the bakery provided absolutely delicious cake and cupcakes.

5 Tips
t o Su rv ive t h e Bea ch wit h K i d s
BY
KRISTEN CORBISIERO
G
oing to the beach is one of my family’s favorite summertime activities. Having made the trek through various stages of life (toddler, toddler while pregnant, two toddlers and pregnant, and now two toddlers and an infant), I have devised some solutions to help make a day at the beach with kids easier. What’s my secret? Pack light, be organized and prepared. Read on to discover five tips how you can survive (and thrive!) a day at the beach with your kids. Use the handy checklist to help pack, too!
40 | SaratogaMama | Summer 2016
1.
BRING A WAGON OR BEACH CART
I don’t know about you, but struggling with bags and chairs and kids from a hot parking lot down to the beach is not my idea of fun. Having a wagon or a big beach cart to hold all my stuff and leave a hand free to help my kiddos is a lifesaver. If need be, with the wagon, I can squeeze a toddler in at the end of the day who is having a meltdown and refusing to walk back to the family van. We’ve all been there.
saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com
2.
A PLACE TO SIT AND HAVE SOME SHADE
A packable beach blanket, a compact beach chair, and beach umbrella are things I can’t live without. We all love playing in the sun, but having a break in the shade and a place to eat lunch is helpful. I’ve tried lots of different types of beach umbrellas, and the one I like the most is the Sport-Brella (available online or at some local retailers). It is low to the ground so you have lots of shade, vented on the sides, easy to set up, takes a beating, and stays put even in beach gusts. I’ve had my fair share of beach umbrellas fold up, get yanked out of the sand, and leave me running in hysterics after it so it doesn’t impale someone on the beach.
3.
MESH EQUIPMENT BAG STUFFED WITH TOYS AND PFD'S
4.
WASH AND GO
My kids love beach toys and want to bring a lot to the beach. I have found a large sports mesh equipment bag is an invaluable tool to pack all those sandy beach toys and Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs). I can toss everything in, give it a good shake to get (some of) the sand out, and not have to unpack it when I get home because it can air dry as-is. Done.
Busy kids at the beach means sand everywhere. It’s really hard for kids to relax on a long ride home if they’re uncomfortable = no naps. I’ve tried showers at the beach, but it is very challenging for me to wrangle everyone together in one place long enough to rinse, soap up, rinse again, dry, and change into clean clothes and diaper - and in the process stay clean. My solution? I pack a dish bucket, eco- and kid-friendly-soap (Dr. Bronner’s baby soap is great), and one large jug of warm water per child into the van. (I fill the jugs with hot water the night before and put them in the car in advance; they are still lukewarm after a day at the beach.) When first arriving at the beach, I look for a safe and somewhat roomy spot to back my van into. This usually means parking either at the corners of the lot, or right in front at the sidewalk. Once we get to the car at the end of the day, I open the hatch and start the AC. I then take out my bag filled with clean clothes/diapers/towels for everyone in the back of the van, and one at a time, strip down the kiddos, have them stand in the wash bucket, and give everyone a shower with the jugs of warm water and change into fresh clothes for the ride home, using the back of the minivan as a changing station. Once each child is clean and dressed, they can walk right to their seat and get comfy and relaxed for the ride home. Once I arrive home, I grab the dirty laundry bag, start a load of laundry, and unpack the car. If I’m lucky, everyone is asleep, and I can rest, too.

5.
PREPARE AND PACK IN ADVANCE
As with most things, I have found that preparing in advance is a sanity-saver. I load the wagon/beach cart pre-packed with the beach blanket, umbrella and mesh bag into the van the night before. I make lunches and stack everything together in one corner of the fridge, leaving my cooler parked in the kitchen to be packed in the morning. Before we leave for the beach in the morning, everyone is coated with sunscreen and wears their bathing suit and water shoes in the car. For little ones who are wearing diapers, I change them into a swim diaper after we get settled on the beach. I pack a separate bag filled with: a change of clothes, diapers, and a wet bag/ laundry bag and leave it in the van.
Savvy Ma ma’s Beach Checklist Beach-friendly wagon or beach cart
Bag filled with change of clothes, diapers, towels
Beach blanket
Wet bag/laundry bag
Compact beach chair
Hats, sunscreen, sunglasses
Beach umbrella Sports mesh equipment bag filled with beach toys, PFDs Cooler filled with lunch, drinking water, garbage bag
Beach towels and water shoes Dish bucket and eco- and kid-friendly soap (I like Dr. Bronner’s baby soap) Jug of water for washing each child
Whether you’re a first-time mama or seasoned pro, being organized and prepared will help you and your family have an enjoyable day at the beach.

THE RIGHT BALANCE FOR SUMMER: how easy should your kids have it? BY
Dr. Cale is a Clifton Park-based parenting expert, author, speaker and licensed psychologist who offers practical, no-nonsense parenting advice for all ages. His website, terrificparenting.com, features hundreds of articles and dozens of parenting products that will help you achieve your goal of happier children and a peaceful home.
W
e’re all anticipating the good times ahead that summer brings. It’s filled with vacations, camping, swimming, sports and plenty of down time. Even though there’s a lot of fun to be had, many parents want to continue to nurture responsible habits and teach their children the fundamentals to be prepared for life.
However, too often, we wait until late adolescence to start teaching this. We then realize that our teen has no intention of taking on responsibility, especially during the summer. They believe, and have often been taught, that summers are for fun only and that they shouldn’t do any real ‘work.’
The ‘making it easy’ approach to summer Many children face the summer with multiple vacations, hanging at the pool and an endless array of sleepovers and daytrips to entertain them. They won’t crack a book, pick up a rake or make a bed. Mom or dad are not only planning what seems like an endless array of entertainment, but they are also responding to ongoing requests for sleepovers, pool parties and sudden get-togethers. For others, sports practice and playing emerges as the primary activity, and family fun seems to hinge around these events.
44 | SaratogaMama | Summer 2016
Dr. Randy Cale
All things considered, the focus is on making sure children get to do (mostly) what they want. The ‘making it easy’ approach is filled with ease and fun, and little responsibility. Parents seem to serve more as taxi drivers, day trip planners and ‘boredom fixers.’ So, what’s the problem, you may ask? Isn’t this what everyone else is doing?
Seeking balance: Easy vs. hard? Somehow, in the middle of this overloaded world of opinions and social media, our sense of being reasonable has failed us and we have lost our compass. We seem to want our kids to have only ease and fun, not realizing that this will come with consequences. Perhaps more problematic, we too easily seem to follow the lead of our children’s wants and desires. It’s almost as if the more we give our children what they want, the more we seem to think this is good for them. We see this trend growing, as six-year olds carry iPhones and a Starbucks cup.
saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com
When too much demand or responsibility is required, life is drudgery, for adults as well as children. We have no sense of ease and no opportunity to re-energize. We also see that muscle that we fail to use begins to atrophy. This is true for ‘brain muscle’ as well. When we learn a skill, and then ignore it for months, our skills decline. Academically, children consistently lose between two and three months of their academic skills. Why? Because we put no demand on those skills during the summer.
No surprises here: Preparation comes from preparation! I know that sounds redundant, but let me explain. If we want our kids to be well prepared for the school year this fall, we prepare them. If we want our children to be well prepared to take responsibility in life, we give them responsibility. Honestly, there is no secret psychological formula. Our children will benefit from working the ‘muscle’ of responsibility and effort this summer. The balance is simple: require some work and effort each day. Not a lot, just enough to keep the academic muscle strong. And don’t hesitate to require daily chores around the house before the friends come over or the fun begins. Even if you start small, the benefits are large.
Children do not know what they need. They only know what they want. Until a solid, responsible maturity is reached, children will tend to want what is easy, what is enjoyable, and what relieves any pressure or sense of anxiety. They will incessantly argue and fight for that easy path. (Some adults take this path as well, of course.)
You will be thankful as the years progress because your child will learn lessons from life that your words will fail to teach. Offer them these lessons, while still enjoying an awesome summer. Remember to follow me on Facebook and Twitter for great tips this summer.
Notice, if you walk this path with your kids, your children seem to get almost everything they want, while putting forth little effort. In today’s world, this translates to a very abundant life for your children, without any investment on their part. Such choices come with two consequences, which many of you already experience. First, there is usually very little sincere gratitude for all your efforts. What happened yesterday is irrelevant. It’s now, “What will YOU do for me today, Mom?” This is often quite poignant during the summer months, as week after week of effort on your part is met with minimal gratitude from your children. Secondly, there is an inevitable building of a sense of entitlement. Kids often feel they have a ‘right to an abundant life’ without any effort or investment. We have trained them for this, and may do so again this summer. The bottom line is this: If we make things too easy for our kids, life will be harder later.
The solution: Balance responsibility with fun When we review the research on life success and satisfaction, the common sense formula is that hard work and effort must be balanced with some time to rejuvenate and enjoy. It is also a clear requisite for continued optimal functioning and good mental health.

THE CHANGING FACE OF
SARATOGA'S RACETRACK Theresa St. John HISTORICAL PHOTOS FROM The Saratoga Room at the Saratoga Springs Public Library STORY & PHOTOS BY
The gates will open for the racing season on July 22nd this year and the meet will conclude on September 5th, 40 days later! That's 36 more days than at it's inception, when the season's meet was a mere four days long! Today, people come from all over the world, standing in line to enter the grounds, anxious to hear that famous cry "AND THEY'RE OFFFFF!" at the Spa City's historic racetrack. It really wasn't too different in 1863, when Saratoga Springs opened what would become one of the world's most beloved sports facilities, with worldwide competitors and a vast audience.
EXCEPT... IT WAS SO DIFFERENT! 46 | SaratogaMama | Summer 2016

Back then,
your ticket for the day cost 50 cents. It was $1.00 if you wanted to sit in the grandstand, or $1.00 to watch the races from your carriage. $10 bucks would get you a five-day pass into the best seats of the house.
If you happened to be a woman, you'd attend the festivities, under the care of a gentleman. And the race card each day began with, get this, two races!

5,000 people attended that much anticipated opening day. It was August 3, 1863. At a buck each, it was deemed an instant hit within the racing community.

John Morrissey,
an undefeated Irish-American heavy-weight boxing champion, was the founding father of Saratoga Racetrack. He'd taught himself how to read and write, becoming the owner and operator of several gambling institutions in New York City, then Saratoga. Morrissey pushed himself even further, to become an elected official in both the United States Congress and New York State Senate. He was only 32 when his vision of thoroughbred racing began, with an enterprising four-day meet in Saratoga during the hot month of August,1863. It was an experiment of sorts. John knew that horse racing was a popular sport and was determined to see if it could become another successful endeavor for him. That day's success was huge and Saratoga fast became one of the world's most famous and beloved courses, even 153 years later.
Today,
the track is a family affair. The gates open early and thousands of people stream in, with picnic baskets and coolers of drinks. Children spend hours in the well-kept playground and enjoy meeting new friends, while their parents read the racing forms and pick their bets. Vendors are set up under big tents, selling things like fancy, embellished hats and original paintings, while the smell of food grilling permeates the air, assaulting the senses, all with live music in the background. Saratoga's race track is a book of rich history. With the Spa City voted both "Great American Place, Great American Main Street and Most Walkable City," you can be certain the dream of John Morrissey and the meet's unparalleled draw from July to September, have a great deal to do with acquiring the title.

Vertical Pallet Flower Display
T
he warmer weather has finally arrived. Even though it was a mild winter, it’s incredibly delightful to once again soak up the sunshine and enjoy the longer days outdoors!
Buds have started to sprout and the first signs of flowers are starting to poke through, but sometimes instant color is what’s needed most to give a boost to the soul as spring rolls into summer. Whether on a porch, deck, or tall fence, add colorful flowers (or fresh herbs) by creating a vertical pallet flower display. Not only does going ‘vertical’ add height, you’ll be surrounded with color, drama, and beauty.

Supplies
• Pallet (which I snagged – with their permission of course – for free in the back of my local Lowe’s) • (4) Eye hooks for 100 lbs+ • 3" of metal chain • Plastic pots (I used lime green and turquoise from Lowe’s) • Drill with 1/4" drill bit
h ere’s how I made a vertical pallet flower display for my front porch…
• 3" S hooks (found in the outdoor section of Lowe’s) • Vise Grip
1. Start with a pallet about 40” W x 48” H. At the top edge of the pallet (slats oriented horizontally), screw in two eye hooks, each about 2-3" from the ends.
TIP

2. Unlink the end link of the chain and
link it through the eye hook at the top of the pallet, then secure the chain.
3. On the vertical surface (in my case,
the side wall of the front porch), install the eye hooks into a beam or structural surface so it’s secure. The eye hooks installed on the vertical surface need to be the same distance apart as the hooks on the pallet.
4. Once the eye hooks are mounted
on the vertical surface, take the loose end of chain, thread it through the eye hooks on the vertical surface, and secure the chair on the other side of the pallet (unlink the end link of the chain, link it through the eye hook on the top of the pallet, then secure the chain).
5. Using varying sized plastic pots
in fun colors – I chose turquoise and green - drill a 1/4" hole about 1" down from the top rim. Using a 3"+/- S hook, slip it through the hole. 58 | SaratogaMama | Summer 2016

This award-winning picture book author of The Guardians has created a wonderful novel for strong independent readers in the lower grades, or for a family read-aloud. Ollie is Billy's beloved, favorite stuffed friend, and Ollie knows that means he has to protect Billy. But can Ollie protect himself? Reminiscent of The Velveteen Rabbit, full of love and friendship, and with a little bit of scary, but without actual fright.

ADRIFT by Paul Griffin Who doesn't want a gripping page-turner for summer break? From critically-acclaimed writer Paul Griffin comes a fast-paced young adult novel about five very different teens lost at sea with no one to count on but each other. Matt and John are best friends working in Montauk for the summer. When Driana, JoJo and Stef invite the boys to their Hamptons mansion, Matt and John find themselves in a sticky situation where temptation rivals sensibility. The new-found friends impulsively head out into the Atlantic after midnight in a stolen boat. None of them come back whole, and not all of them come back.
by Peter Brown
The Wild Robot is an utterly original Robinson Crusoe story told in short chapters with an abundance of fantastic illustration by this Caldecott medalist in his middle grade debut. When shipwrecked robot Roz opens her eyes for the first time, she discovers that she is alone on a remote, unsettled island. She has no idea how she got there or what her purpose is--but she knows she needs to survive. This book should have wide appeal for both both girls and boys, and opportunities for lively discussion abound, especially if you choose this as your family's camping trip read-aloud.
Adults ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE
by Anthony Doerr
Last year's Pulitzer Prizewinner for fiction is new to paperback this summer, just in time for you to tuck it into your travel bag. The lives of a French girl who is blind and an idealistic soldier in the German army draw inexorably together as World War II rages across Europe. The spirit of hope in these two young people prevails over a vast panorama of devastation and death. Exciting, moving, and beautifully written. Repeat: beautifully written. This one will keep you up late reading.

ARIES Child
TAURUS Child
GEMINI Child
Your fire sign child is a combination of smiles, temper, toughness, demands, and sweetness. Pheww, I’m tired just thinking about keeping up with the little Ram this summer. Remember, she was the first to walk in her nursery school so you had to know you’d be in trouble. He’s a born leader who is quick and eager to take charge of any situation. Demanding, for sure, but so loving with big expressions of affection. Since your Aries child is generous to a fault, you might want to tackle teaching him about the value of a dollar. Piggy banks, savings accounts, stocks, bonds, or a trip to the US Mint - it’s not too early to show her that giving is good but so is saving for tomorrow.
Stubbornness is as strong a personality trait of “the bull’s” as kindness, sweetness, quiet, and calm are. You’ve been on the receiving end of his temper and you still can’t wrap your mind around that someone who’s so gentle and kind can get so angry and then return to a steady calm so quickly. It takes a lot to get him upset but when it does, look-out!! Your May-born child doesn’t like surprises so keep routine a part of her everyday life. Taurus is ruled by Venus; the planet of love and everything beautiful. Music is in their soul and their response to it from a young age tells the story. Watch how intently he listens to you sing or how she falls asleep to the car radio.
You knew your Gemini child was clever and curious but many of them are downright geniuses. Their minds can figure out solutions almost as quick as a computer. Their bodies move around just as fast and they are not fond of sleeping for long hours. Verbal and reading skills are strong and they are natural storytellers. They get bored easily and need variety to keep interested in any task. Wouldn’t you know that they are often known for embellishing their side of the story? Steer them in the direction of using their natural sense of humor and sharp wit to communicate and leave the “tall tales” in their books.

The changeable ocean crab enjoys land and sea and your little crab loves the summer water best of all. And like the crab your July-born Cancer child is hard (sturdy) on the outside and soft on the inside. Reserved and cautious by nature your child will retreat at the first sign of a threat to his security – leave the risk taking up to the fire signs. Family is everything to them and they find it hard to detach from those they love and move into the realm of strangers and new beginnings. Learning about history, family ancestry in particular, holds a strong interest for them. Photography seals their lineage with proof of those who went before and the stories behind those family members. Your intuitive, moody child needs gentle pushing in the right direction. Help to build their confidence by introducing them to games or pursuits that come naturally to them. Logic over harsh punishment is a must for them.
Is a Sun-child! Their ruling “planet” is the biggest star in our universe. That’s a metaphor for Leo the lion- warm, bright and enjoys every minute of being the center of his/her universe. These charming, sunshine children are always up for fun and love to show off their “stuff” on stage. The audience applause keeps them coming back for more. They are born leaders- proud, brave and demanding. It is their natural inclination to “rule the land and its people.” It’s your job to help them realize that no one will be stopping by to genuflect and kiss their ring any time soon. Starting them off young to know that there is no “I” in team is a good move.
You notice at a young age that the Virgo child wants to be helpful. Being of service comes natural to her and she’ll endear herself to all the teachers in school. There is a bossy, critical way about how they communicate with siblings and peers especially. Teaching him early on that a gentle attitude is well received and will help decrease the friction of any criticism he doles out. Listening to the opinions of others doesn’t mean that he loses control; it simply is a means to a peaceful end. Virgos are excellent communicators when they learn the art of finesse. They can talk anyone into anything and convince you how happy you are in the process. They are quick to find loopholes in the rules and use that to their advantage. Post a written list of house rules so you all can refer to them.

Everyone looks forward to the fun that summer brings and using astrology can increase your chances of it being a successful experience for the whole family. A wise mother once said, “taking care of the little details clears the way for positivity to grow.” Whether your child is 6 months, 6 years, or 16 years old, knowledge of each Sun Sign will have you on your way to a winning summer!

November 22 - December 21:
These social butterflies love a party with music, costumes, beautiful decorations and fun. Libra is the sign of the balance scales and they spend a lifetime weighing their options. They find it more difficult to choose between a burger with cheddar or American cheese than they do deciding between attending a birthday or Halloween party. Don’t rush these fair-minded, logical kids; they need time. That’s what makes them perfect playground peacekeepers ... they grow into born diplomats. These generous souls like to make people smile and they often take responsibility for the harmony in the household. Guide her towards not giving all the time so that she’s left with nothing.
A major characteristic with Scorpio is their need for alone time and privacy. Don’t think you can keep any secrets from your highly intuitive Scorpio! There is only one secret keeper in the family, in her opinion, and it’s her! I know you think to yourself that your emotionally sturdy child is rock solid and can take on the world - that’s true on most days. Because Scorpio is brimming over with intensity, mostly on the inside, the level of energy can be overwhelming to them at times. Start in the early years by trying to coax them out of their gray moods by reassuring them that they have a trusting confidant in you. It stands to reason that their favorite game is hide and seek and that he can put on his detective hat and find your lost earring in a snap.
Your young “Archer” is a world traveler by nature. Whether his world is behind the windows and doors of your home or inside the pages of his new book – it’s wherever his legs and mind will carry him! Adventure and freedom are 2 words they live by and keeping up with them is a task. Enthusiastic and friendly describe her perfectly. So when she pulls away and goes off on her own it’s just her way of letting everyone know that she’s feeling smothered. Freedom loving, remember! Your job, over time, is to help her separate fantasy from reality. Both boys and girls have a Peter Pan outlook on life – full of hope, magic and possibilities. Truth be told, they just never want to grow up.

PISCES Child
February 20 - March 20:
Of course you knew your child was an old soul from the time he could raise his head for 10 seconds. Knowing what he wants and how to get it by using common sense comes naturally. Boys and girls alike stand out as practical and wise beyond their years; they might not be understood by their peers because they come across like adults at times. Helping them to approach others with grace and lightheartedness may take some time but is worth the effort. They want to be likeable and accepted, they just need some coaching. They are decisive little leaders and it’s rare that you would see impulsive behavior. In private they show up with hand-picked flowers and kisses galore. How lucky can you be!
Boldly intelligent and absolutely fearless – what a combination! Your Aquarian is always going to be an inventor of things that are new and different. Whether it’s using a science kit, a sewing machine or an easy bake oven, your child will show others how to create the unique and innovative product. They do need your help with evening out the extremes of their emotional reactions to the unexpected. They are born humanitarians and much of their intensity shows up when they believe that others are being maligned or taken advantage of. Lucky for everyone around, their emotional displays don’t last long and calm comes over the earth once again.
The intuitive sensitivity of Pisces is legendary. They are the emotional sponges of the zodiac – always picking up on the moods of others. Your little fish needs help navigating the waters of negativity and sadness. If they are around this mood for too long they have to get away and find a refuge. Hiking, camping, fishing, swimming – getting lost with nature renews their psyche. Your Pisces has a great big imagination and can tell a story (fib) like no other. It’s just their creative way of how they see the world. Ask her to share her ideas on how to make the world a better place to live!
