— The city Zoning Board of Appeals last week unanimously approved a SEQRA Negative Declaration as well as area variances to allow a mixed-use development proposal involving Sperry’s Restaurant and new residential units on Caroline Street to move forward.

Sperry’s Restaurant operated in the Spa City for 91 years before closing in early 2023. It was purchased by Louis Lazzinnaro in January of 2024 with the idea of re-opening the restaurant and combining it with a new mixed-use project.

Dave Carr of the LA Group represented the applicant in front of the ZBA last week and said both the Sperry’s name and the restaurant’s façade will be maintained.

GLENS FALLS — Glens Falls Vegan Festival, is set for Saturday, August 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in City Park in Downtown Glens Falls, New York.

And delicious food is something everyone can enjoy. Some folks don’t realize that when we say vegan food, we’re talking about lemonade, italian ice, bread, the exact same way everyone always enjoys it. We want to break the stigma

people have of vegan food being something super weird or just twigs and leaves.”

Among those in attendance are the former Birch Bark Eatery, now rebranded as Bitchin Donuts, as well as Subculture from Albany, Soulistic Vegan from Schenectady, Sunny Sips, Innovo Kitchen Food Truck, Woodstock Herbal Products, Simply Garlic, Funked Up Art Co., C.A.R.E. and others.

Entertainment includes a pit bull “kissing booth” by Out of the Pits, live music by Mark Rabin, parenting and cooking tips from Kristin and Em, and more.

The event will include a post-festival dinner menu made up of restaurant specials throughout the city, so attendees can explore the many vegan options available at Glens Falls restaurants for their evening meal.

Billed as a “joyful, inclusive celebration of plant-based food and the vegan lifestyle,” the event is hosted by Glens Falls Vegan and Advokate, LLC, and sponsored by the City of Glens Falls and Capital Region Vegan Network.

The proposed building will stand about 61 feet tall and include 40 to 45 apartments above Sperry’s. Those apartments are still in the design phase, and it is anticipated a presentation will be forthcoming in the future seeking Design Review Board

approval. There will be 8 parking spaces in the back with a handicap spot.

A five-story building was approved last year to be developed on a vacant space adjacent to Sperry’s. The plan is to tie the building housing Sperry’s and the soon-to-be developed building adjacent to it together.

SARATOGA SPRINGS: Detailing City Revenues, Expenses

SARATOGA SPRINGS

—With one eye on the city’s current annual spending plan of approximately $61.3 million and another on the upcoming sessions to determine financial allocations for 2025, Saratoga Springs Finance Commissioner Minita Sanghvi has initiated a discussion detailing the yearly revenue and expense practice.

“Since we’re just getting into the start of the budget season, I thought I would explain how some of the finances work for our city,” Commissioner Sanghvi said.

“One of the main sources of revenue for our city is property tax – a fixed source of income; sales tax - which is variable and goes up and down with the economy; mortgage tax - which is highly variable, and occupancy tax – which is dependent on the number of rooms we have in the city,” she said. Additional income revenues come from ambulance transport fees, various city fees, and federal and state aid.

The total annual revenuesanticipated at $61.3 million this year - have increased in recent years, rising from $41.3 million received in 2020 to $56.1 million received in 2023.

SALES TAX

“A large part of this increase is sales tax, (increasing) from about $11 million in 2020 to close to $19.5 million today,” Sanghvi said. The 7% sales tax rate is divided in this way: 4% goes to the state, 1.5% goes to Saratoga County, and 1.5% to the city of Saratoga Springs.

Sales tax revenue in 2004 is anticipated at $19.5 million, up $1.1 million from 2023.

REAL PROPERTY TAX AND MORTGAGE TAX

Real property tax is collected quarterly. “We have about 247 parcels (amounting to about $3.1 million) that are delinquent,” the commissioner said. “We’ve been working

tirelessly to get those monies back, but overall we have more than 95% rate of the paying of property taxes. We are doing much better than some other places.”

According to an article published in 2022 by the National Association of Realtors, the average tax delinquency rate in New York State was 9% (or 91% paid), with a handful of states – Mississippi, Delaware, New Jersey and Massachusetts among them, climbing higher than 10% (less than 90% paid).

Saratoga Springs typically collects just over $17 million annually in real property taxes.

Mortgage Tax revenue in the city peaked at about $2.1 million in 2021 and 2022, slid down to $1.7 million in 2023 and is anticipated to be $1.5 million this year.

HOTEL OCCUPANCY TAX

“Hotel occupancy has gone up significantly since 2021 from $587,00 to $850,000,” Sanghvi said. “This is 6% occupancy tax of which the City Center gets 2%, Discover Saratoga gets 2%, the county gets 1% and we (the city of Saratoga Springs) get 1%.”

OTHER FEES

In 2022, the city collected just under $1.8 million in ambulance transport fees. After a second ambulance was added in late 2022, nearly $2.2 million was collected the following year with an estimated $2.3 million budgeted in 2024. Other city fees vary depending on demand and include items such as licenses, permits and departmental fees, and typically bring in about $2.8 million annually.

Federal and State Aid varies each year. State Aid has returned roughly $4.5 - $5.5 million each year over the past handful of years; Federal Aid has varied from $4 million each in 2021 and 2022, to $500,000 in 2023 and an anticipated $1.2 million in 2024. This aid includes VLT, CHIPS, and revenue sharing via the state, and Federal FEMA and ARPA funds – the latter of which accounts for the bump in aid in 2021 and 2022.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?

“So, we’re making all this money, where does all the money go?” Sanghvi said. “Our expenses have gone up from $44 million (in 2020) to $61 million (currently) - a significant rise in expenses. Most of it is personnel,” she said, pointing to an increase in personnel costs from under $25 million in 2020 to over $33 million in 2024. “A large chunk of it is in Public Safety, but other departments have also seen increases.”

Hospitalization rates and benefits, as well as Police and Fire Department retirement

costs have also increased. “It’s not just that we have more people, the rates have also gone up, and this is nationwide.”

The cost of liability insurance has increased from $900,000 in 2020 to $2 million this year, an increase, the commissioner said, largely due to costs related to the attorney general’s investigation, ongoing litigation, and the aftermath renovation of the 2018 City Hall fire. Utility costs are also on the rise nationwide. “There’s an increase in the price of energy but we are working on ways to lower utilities and are constantly looking at Green

opportunities and grants to try and lower costs.”

The recent past has seen a growth in both revenues and expenses, as well as the addition of new services Sanghvi said. Among those added services: the city’s new east side fire station (an $8.6 million Capital Expense); Veteran’s Memorial Park (which cost more than $850,000), and addressing the city’s homelessness issue, which counts a combined cost of about $500,000 in funding related to the RISE Adelphi street shelter, Shelters of Saratoga, and the homeless court.

Saratoga Springs: City Police Partnering with FBI to Face Fentanyl Threat

SARATOGA SPRINGS

— To address the threat of increased fentanyl trafficking, the Saratoga Springs Police Department is partnering with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Safe Streets Task Force and will be “operational in Saratoga Springs in the near future,” according to a statement released by city Public Safety Commissioner Tim Coll this week.

The Task Force is a collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and will provide additional resources and tools for the SSPD to eliminate this threat. The Task Force’s goal is to investigate and prosecute major interstate theft, drug conspiracy and firearm offenses in Saratoga Springs.

Schuylerville $4.5 Million to Advance the Community’s Vision for Revitalization

SCHUYLERVILLE — In January, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the village of Schuylerville was awarded $4.5 million to revitalize its downtown.

“This is the day it all begins,” Hochul said announcing the grant award during a presser held in Lake George. “We have the 250th anniversary of the battle(s) of Saratoga coming up soon. Let’s celebrate 2027. Our goal is to greet the world with a really transformed village in time for that, so that’s the timetable we’re looking at.”

The $4.5 million awarded Schuylerville in the NY Forward grant measures about three times the village’s annual general fund budget, and is purposed to develop

a Strategic Investment Plan and implement key catalytic projects that advance the community’s vision for revitalization.

Saratoga County Chamber President Todd Shimkus met with homeowners interested in applying for a portion of the grant at Kickstart Café in downtown Schuylerville this week, in advance of the Aug. 2 application submission deadline.

Schuylerville, which calls itself “America’s Most Historic Village” is home to about 1,400 residents. In 2022, its Village Board of Trustees appointed a 7-member committee for the NY Forward Task Force to lead the public participation and grant-writing process, and subsequently submitted a letter of intent to apply for the $4.5 million NY Forward Grant.

Timewise, most, if not all the projects approved, are anticipated to first “break

ground” in 2025, Schuylerville Mayor Dan Carpenter said during the monthly village board meeting shortly after the grant award was announced.

Jam Band Charity Comes to Saratoga; Local Beneficiary Needed

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Last year, the jam band Goose had their biggest headlining performance to date at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC). This year, when the band returns to SPAC for a two-night run in September, a fan-created charity is coming along to raise funds for a local nonprofit.

The Western Sun Foundation will host its first in-person fundraiser at the Saratoga Spa Golf Course on Saturday, September 7. The “Goose on the Green” event nearly sold out in only a week, with 72 people already slated to attend. As of Tuesday afternoon, the event had two tee times remaining for Goose fans looking to hit the links prior to the band’s second show.

The golf outing includes the long strange putt contest (a nod

to the Grateful Dead lyrics, “what a long, strange trip it’s been”) and some soon-to-be-announced, Goose-related prizes.

The local nonprofit beneficiary of the fundraiser has yet to be determined. Western Sun Foundation President Sarah Blazincic said that Saratogaarea and Capital Region charities should contact her to be considered. The beneficiary will be officially selected by the foundation on August 15.

Western Sun was launched by a group of Goose fans in 2022. The Goose community, akin to the Phish and Grateful Dead fan bases that came before it, often attends multiple shows every year, obsessing over the setlists, solos, and sound mixes of each tour. Goose’s popularity has been steadily increasing over the past few years, especially after performances with Phish’s Trey Anastasio and the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir seemingly cemented them as the next great jam band act.

“We decided to take this big energy that was Goose and the music we get from it, transform that into action, and raise money for the communities that we’re traveling through,” said Blazincic.

Phish’s Mockingbird Foundation and the Grateful Dead’s Rex Foundation both served as examples for Goose fans looking to give back. “Just like lots of other communities have done before us, we wanted to capitalize on the Goose energy that is so quickly rising and do some good with it,” Blazincic said.

One example of Western Sun’s good deeds came during Goose shows at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre in October 2023.

“We partnered with an organization called Feel the Beat,” Blazincic said. “They are an organization that provides music education and music therapy for children with disabilities and people who are hard of hearing. So they actually have vibrating dance floors that they’re putting in venues around Colorado. They make sure that there are music interpreters and all different types of programming to bring music education and therapy to people who typically don’t have access to it.”

Western Sun raised $6,000 and launched a 30-day awareness and visibility campaign for Feel the Beat. The fan foundation has also financially supported nonprofits such as Girls Rock Detroit, a music education program that teaches girls how to play instruments and create a band. Girls Rock Detroit participants were invited to attend a Goose soundcheck and watch the group live.

Blazincic said that Goose band members have been “very supportive” of the foundation’s initiatives over the past couple years.

“We work with them side by side to make sure that we are doing things that they want to see,” Blazincic said. “This golf outing was one of them.”

“Goose on the Green” will take place on Saturday, September 7 at the Saratoga Spa State Park Golf Club at 60 Roosevelt Drive in Saratoga

Springs. For more information on registration and sponsorships, visit app.eventcaddy.com/ events/goose-on-the-green.

The Western Sun Foundation is looking for beneficiaries in the Saratoga area that meet the following criteria:

• Classified as a “Public Charity” with tax-exempt status under Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code (individual or private foundations are not eligible)

• Operating budget less than $1,000,000

• Focuses on one of the following areas: music education; music therapy; safety, health, and personal wellbeing of women and children; or climate action and environmental sustainability Local organizations that meet these criteria can contact Sarah Blazincic at westernsunfoundation@gmail. com.

Schuylerville Diner Changes

Name and Owners

SCHUYLERVILLE —

Since 2016, the diner located at 106 Broad Street in Schuylerville has been known to locals as Sweeney’s Restaurant. But starting July 31, the establishment changed ownership and revealed its new name: Mama Bear’s Diner.

Former owners Ed and Amanda Bergin wrote in a Facebook post that “for the last 8 years, we have had the pleasure to serve this community

doing what we love. We have decided that it is time for us to step down and give someone else the same opportunity.”

The new owner might be familiar to Sweeney’s regulars.

Ashley Comeaux, a waitress at Sweeney’s, took over the business from her former employers.

“I’ll be in the back baking yummy treats today but dad, a.k.a. the coffee guy, is ready to serve you some delicious food,” Comeaux said in a Facebook post. “Can’t wait to see you all!”

Mama Bear’s Diner is open from 7am to 2pm, Wednesday through Sunday.

Sweeney’s Restaurant in Schuylerville has been renamed Mama Bear’s Diner after a change in ownership. Logo via the restaurants’ Facebook pages.

Local High Schools Named Schools of Distinction and Excellence Elementary School Mural Memorializes Teacher Who Battled Cancer

SCHUYLERVILLE — Schuylerville Elementary School students have painted a mural in their school’s hallway in memory of Dave Mehan, a teacher who passed away in 2023 after battling cancer.

The mural, named “Mehan Trail,” is filled with images of nature, reading, kindness, and peace; images that are reflective of Mehan’s legacy. During his tenure of almost 26 years, Mehan was known as a devoted educator who had a unique ability to connect with students and staff in a meaningful way.

Shortly after Mehan’s passing, Schuylerville faculty and staff members wrote

reflections of their experiences with the beloved teacher. One faculty member wrote:

“When I was going through my own cancer battle in 2016, he helped to organize my fundraiser. When he himself became sick, I could not believe the strength and determination he had. He has fought so hard this past year, traveling to whatever doctor he needed to, never giving up hope that he would beat it. I saw him for the last time a week ago and although exhausted and in pain, he was still cracking jokes and being the sarcastic Dave we all know and love.”

LATHAM — The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) announced its 2023-2024 Schools of Distinction and Excellence on Friday. Ballston Spa Senior High School and Saratoga Central Catholic High School were named Schools of Distinction, while Saratoga Springs High School and Schuylerville High School were designated as Schools of Excellence. Winning schools will receive

their commemorative awards at their local athletic director workshop this fall.

To earn School of Distinction status, 100% of the school’s varsity teams must qualify for and receive the ScholarAthlete team award during their respective sports seasons. School of Excellence status is awarded to schools with 75% of varsity teams that qualify for and receive the

Scholar-Athlete team award.

According to NYSPHSAA, the purpose of the School of Distinction and School of Excellence Awards are to unite athletic departments in challenging their teams to achieve a statewide academic honor. This year, 114 schools earned the School of Distinction Award and 226 schools earned the School of Excellence Award.

home & Garden

Gardening Wise watering

with Peter Bowden:

This has been a very hot summer and there’s a tendency to overwater potted plants and hanging baskets during hot weather. We overcompensate when it is hot and end up watering too much and drowning our container plants. Always feel the soil before you water...if the soil is already moist, wait until later and check again.

As simple as watering seems, there is a right and wrong way to go about it. When you water, you should never spray the plants leaves with water. Why all this fuss about keeping water off the leaves?

1. Spraying chills the leaves, shocking the plant. On a hot day we might think that our tomato plants would enjoy a cooling spray from the hose. Actually, tomatoes love their leaves to be hot...they are from Central America after all. On a 90° summer day, the leaves of the tomato are evaporating moisture. The tomato (or any of our garden plants) replaces that moisture by drawing it up through its roots. Along with that moisture comes the nutrients the plant needs to grow, flower and produce fruit. When the leaves get hit with that 50°F water from the hose, it shocks the plant and it takes a couple of days to recover from that. Every time you chill your tomato by spraying it with water, you’re cheating yourself out of a couple of days of growing. Our season is short enough without shooting our efforts in the foot by spray watering.

2. Spraying our plants with water creates a perfect environment for fungal diseases to incubate and thrive. Folks are always worried about late blight, powdery mildew and a host of other diseases. But they’ll continue to water their vegetable garden with a lawn sprinkler. Plants with dry leaves are always going to be healthier.

3. Spraying our plants with water washes the pollen out of the flowers. Once that happens, the plant will abort that now-useless flower. In the case of flowering ornamental plants, this means that a flower that could have lasted several days will now turn to mush by the next morning.

In the vegetable garden, spraying the pollen out of the flowers means that no fruit will form until a new flower opens and gets pollinated. All the effort we put into our vegetable gardens is undermined when we water with a lawn sprinkler.

4. Spray watering wastes water. Plants absorb water through their roots and that is where the water should be directed. Water sprayed on your garden damages the plants and most of it never gets taken up by the roots but instead evaporates into

the air, doing little good for your plants and a great deal of damage to your garden. So, how do we water the gardens without wetting the plants? There are a couple of easy ways.

Use a watering wand. A watering wand allows you to direct the water to the soil at the base of each plant so the roots can be soaked without wetting the foliage. The wand gets the water where it’s most needed without wasting any. Sometimes you want to give a deep drink to a larger plant like a shrub or tree...especially recently planted ones. To do this, just turn down the volume on the wand and let it dribble slowly at the base of the plant. This works well if you’re out putzing in the yard so you can move it around once in a while. A good soaking always beats a quick spray.

If you haven’t the time or patience for wand watering, you can use oozing soaker hoses so all you have to do is hook up your hose and walk away. If you are using several soaker hoses in different beds, you may want to invest in snap connectors and an inexpensive water timer/shut off so you can let it run while you leave for work.

Watering is actually quite easy. What seems to be hard for folks is breaking the spraywatering habit. Remember, the lawn sprinkler is great for the lawn but has no business in the flowerbed or vegetable garden. That is the exclusive territory of watering wands and soaker hoses.

Thanks for the read!

Zucchini Season

HIGH ROCK PARK

9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

3 - 6 p.m.

It’sthat zucchini time of year!

Zucchini plants are bursting and people are wondering just what to do with their zucchini, or maybe you see them at the market, and you’re just not certain how to save these fresh summer bites for cold winter months.

Have you considered freezing zucchini? Here are a few tips and ideas so that you can have this summer squash on hand to pull out and use all winter long when it’s not zucchini season.

These freezing steps do not require blanching, which is great! We all love when we can actually skip a step (wink).

Zucchini Noodles (zoodles): Cut off each end of the zucchini, rinse, dry and make your zucchini noddles with a vegetable spiralizer. Spread out the zucchini noodles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze them. Once they are frozen, place them in a freezer storage bag or container and keep frozen until ready to use.

Sliced Zucchini: Cut off each end of the zucchini, rinse, dry and slice. Freeze and store the same way as the zucchini noodles (see above).

Shredded Zucchini: Cut off each end of the zucchini, rinse, dry and shred. Place the shredded zucchini into a clean towel or cheese cloth and squeeze out as much of the excess water as possible. Place the shredded zucchini in a freezer bag and freeze. Personally, I like to label and measure shredded zucchini before freezing based on what I will be using the it to make. A good example would be making chocolate zucchini muffins.

Par Roasting: This is my favorite way to freeze zucchini! I prep my vegetable mix (zucchini, peppers, onions, eggplant, etc.) Toss them in a

very light coating of olive oil, season and place them on a parchment covered baking sheet and roast them in an oven of 375 degrees for 20 minutes. I let them cool completely, place them in a labeled storage container and when I’m ready to use them, I simply place them back onto a baking sheet, put then back into a 375 degree oven for an additional 20 to 25 minutes.

Zucchini are inherently watery so often you should add your frozen zucchini directly to any recipe without thawing first to cook; soup, sauté, sauce, etc.

Here’s a fun, or not so fun, zucchini fact: We often think of a zucchini as a vegetable, but botanically it’s classified as a fruit. Whatever it is, vegetable or fruit, you can enjoy them year round fresh out of the garden, from the farmers’ market and hopefully your freezer.

The Saratoga Farmer’s Market is open on Wednesdays from 3- 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at High Rock Park in downtown Saratoga Springs. The Monday market at Clifton Park is open from 2-5 p.m. at the Shenendehowa Methodist Church on Route 146. The Thursday Market at Milton begins Thursday, July 11th, through August 29th at the Burgess Kimball Memorial Park from 3-6 p.m. Find us online at www.saratogafarmersmarket.org, where you can sign up for our weekly newsletter, and follow us on Facebook and Instagram @ SaratogaFarmersMarket.

Zucchini Lasagna Roll Ups

YIELDS: 6 servings | PREP & COOK TIME: 90 min

INGREDIENTS:

*Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 3 large zucchini, trimmed (about 4 pounds), sliced lengthwise into 24 ⅛-inchthick strips

• Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 1 tablespoon olive oil

• ¾ pound Italian sausage, casing removed

• 1 cup part skim ricotta cheese

• ⅓ cup freshly grated Parmesan

• 1 large egg

• ¼ cup chopped fresh basil leaves

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 ½ cups marinara sauce, divided

• 2 cups shredded mozzarella, divided

INSTRUCTIONS:

Line a baking sheet with paper towels. Lay zucchini slices flat in a single layer onto the prepared baking sheet. Season with salt, to taste; let stand 15 minutes.

Heat olive oil in a large cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add Italian sausage and cook until browned, about 3-5 minutes, making sure to crumble the sausage as it cooks; drain excess fat. In a medium bowl, combine sausage, ricotta, Parmesan, egg, basil and garlic; season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Spread 1 cup marinara sauce sauce onto the bottom of a large cast iron skillet over; set aside.

Spread 1 tablespoon ricotta mixture evenly along each zucchini slice; sprinkle with 1 tablespoon mozzarella cheese. Roll up and place in the prepared skillet; repeat with remaining zucchini slices and filling. Top with remaining 1/2 cup marinara sauce and sprinkle with remaining 1 cup mozzarella.

Place into oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until lasagna rolls are heated through and the cheese is beginning to brown. Serve immediately.

This time of year is filled with events of having family or friends visiting, or traveling and often times includes finding gifts for those who have done something special or bringing a taste of our hometown to others. Whether you’re shopping for a neighbor or a friend, or family member who has visited, a locally made gift has value beyond the price tag. Local gifts can remind the recipient of some of their favorite memories of their travels or represent the beauty or culture of their hometown. One item that is useful and beautiful to give is a hardwood cutting board.

At Compliments to the Chef, we love wood cutting boards! Good hard woods such as oak, maple, walnut, ash, and cherry are tough cutting surfaces that have been used for centuries to cut food or butcher meat on. Early man just cut down any old tree to butcher and cut meat on but quickly realized that soft woods got people sick. A good cutting board properly maintained can last a life time and they are safer than plastic which if it isn’t sanitized or left wet can actually harbor bacteria. Some of the reasons for this are:

1. Plastic is not waterabsorbent, so it stays wet longer, which means longer bacterial survival.

2. Wood is waterabsorbent, so it dries faster, which means shorter bacterial survival.

3. Wood contains natural antibiotic agents that retard bacterial growth.

We carry beautiful handcrafted wood cutting boards made by Saratoga Springs Artisan Adam Cielinski. Choosing an Adam Cielinski wood cutting board can make

Gift of Happiness

“EVERY

GIFT FROM A FRIEND IS A WISH FOR YOUR HAPPINESS”

Hello my Foodie Friends!

a great “Saratoga” gift to bring to family or friends or it can be one for your own home. Bring one as a housewarming or thank you gift or choose from one that may reflect a special love or hobby of a person you are buying for. They are simply beautiful and functional.

Adam’s boards are part of Saratoga Springs Art History. They are each different and no two are exactly the same. We have boards shaped like horse heads, owls, guitars, violins, hearts, cats, dogs, handled serving boards, and smaller boards. He also makes large cutting blocks that are great for larger items. The good news is they are reasonably priced too. Wood cutting boards have been in my family for generations and we hand them down. Stop in and pick up a piece of Saratoga History and have something that you can hand down in your family. A little advice on their care:

1. Dry the board immediately after (hand) washing, and

2. Once a month, rub the board with oil, to keep it

water-repellent and warp-free. Apply a coat of warm food-safe mineral oil, let soak in, and then wipe off the excess. Scratches can be sanded out then re-oiled. Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. In the process, people usually recognize that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside themselves. As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals — to other people, nature, or a higher power. Stop by Compliment’s to the Chef, your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery store located at 33 Railroad Place in Saratoga Springs. Give that gift that gives the gift of happiness to someone special in your life. Remember my Foodie Friends, “Life Happens in the Kitchen”.

Patricia Susan Gargiulo

Patricia Susan Gargiulo, 79, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2024.

Known to loved ones as Patty, was born In Gloversville, a first generation Italian American to the late Pasquale and Assunta (Digiacomo) D’Errico. Patty was the beloved wife of 59 years to Richard D “Rick” Gargiulo Sr. They had 2 children, Richard A. “Rick” (Anna) Gargiulo Jr. and Kristen Reffitt. Patty was also a proud grandmother to three beautiful grandchildren: Kayla Walsh, Brian Reffitt Jr., and Grace Gargiulo. She loved her grandchildren with all of her heart. Family was everything to Patty and she relished the time they spent together. Patty came from a large family of one brother and five sisters. Patty was the youngest of her siblings and is survived by her dear sisters Katherine Cozzolino of San Antonio, Fl and Rose Kelly of Amsterdam, NY. She will join her loving sisters Helen Leibl (Joe), Carmella “Carmy”

Mulhall (John), Louise Mosconi (Bob) and her beloved brother Jack D’Errico in heaven. Her legacy lives on through dozens of nieces, nephews, and countless friends who will miss her dearly.

Patty’s life was a testament to the love she had for her family and friends as well as her passion for cooking. She was known for her Sunday sauce and meatballs, a family tradition to this day. She adored gathering and celebrating with family and friends, she was always the first to plan family holiday events. No one ever left Patty’s presence hungry; her kitchen was always open, and she looked forward to the joy of feeding her family and friends. Her familiar call to “Eat, eat” will forever echo in our hearts.

Patty faced many health challenges over the last year and a half and was cared for by amazing caregivers at home and at the Wesley Community. A special thank you to all of them who gave such love and attention to Patty.

Reader’s Review: Dierks Bentley at Saratoga

Whether you are a long time Saratogian or visiting for your first time this summer, I’m sure you’ve heard of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

SPAC is Saratoga’s resident amphitheater nestled among the

towering pines of the Saratoga Spa State Park. I have seen many artists preform on a variety of different stages from open grass fields, festival settings, and arena tours and still SPAC will always feel special to me. The perfect balance of big stage quality with a close community feel…and Dierks Bentley seems to agree.

After kicking off the Gravel and Gold concert on July 18, Dierks made sure to tell his fans why performing in Saratoga is special to him. He talked about having performed at many different venues throughout his career but said playing at SPAC feels like you’re playing in someone’s backyard.

That exact feeling is why I think so many people love SPAC. You simply feel closer to the artist. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone connect with their crowd as much as Dierks Bentley did.

He was high energy all night: running across stage, talking with fans – even inviting a couple to go up on stage with him, and encouraging the crowd

to raise another beer. It felt like a big party all night long.

Standing there getting to watch him perform was an amazing experience. There was chanting and cheering and singing along, from “I Hold On” to “Somewhere on a Beach”which Dierks said, somewhere on Saratoga Lake!! - there were

people who sang along like every word was written for them.

When everyone thought the show was over and the band played what we all thought was the last song of the night, Dierks Bentley came back out on stage wearing a pilot’s costume to perform “Drunk on a Plane,” and followed it up with

another costume change, this time with the band wearing wigs and dressed up as his parody band Hot Country Knights. They played a few more songs to eventually end the night. Simply put… I had a great time! It was one amazing night.

Immunity means exempt from disease or obligation. The new vaccine provides immunity against chicken pox. The church was granted immunity from any local taxation. Impunity means exempt from harm, penalty, or punishment. The favorite child teased his brother with impunity.

Off To A Good Start

With

the support of trainers and his father, Saratoga Springs native Dylan Davis looks to exceed his personal best at Saratoga Race Course this year.

Like most jockeys, Dylan Davis has to work hard, get the right support to be competitive, and remain confident in his riding, especially at Saratoga Race Course.

Right now, that seems to be working for him.

Within the first 14 days of the Saratoga Race Course meet, Davis has a good start as a sixthleading jockey with 11 winners and 13 others finishing either second or third.

That’s a sharp contrast to when Davis had just two winners in 2020 within that same time fame. However, those numbers improved with five wins in

2021, six wins in 2022, and nine winners last year – all within the same time span.

“It has been great,” Davis said. “I try to go in with a lot of confidence. The outcome, getting the winners early, has exceeded my expectations.”

Davis is also close to exceeding his expectations of total winners for the Saratoga meet after finishing with 17 in 2002, 18 in 2021, 15 in 2023, and 19 last year, which has been his personal best.

“I set a personal goal. I was trying to get to 19 [winners],” the 2011 Saratoga Springs High School graduate said. “I try to beat my personal best. I haven’t

been focusing on what the other riders are doing. I am focusing on me. We aren’t halfway through the meet. Everything is going well. I’ve got guys behind me and support me.”

It didn’t take Davis that long to get his first winner of the meet. For his second mount on Opening Day, he guided firsttime starter Punch the Clock to a front-running victory for trainer Raymond Handal. That followed with riding longshot The Queens M G to victory in the Schuylerville Stakes.

“It is incredible,” he said. “Saratoga-native and any win is special here, but to win the feature of the day is great.”

Just over a week later, Davis had a four-win day that included another Handal-trainee Union Dolly and two for trainer Mark Casse with Full Screen in an allowance and Pounce in the Grade 3 Lake George Stakes.

Even during the dark days of the Saratoga’s first week, Davis picked up another win by going to Finger Lakes where he helped

Pandagate, trained by Clement, outfinish Doc Sullivan in the New York Derby.

“I try to stay available,” Davis said. “Going to Finger Lakes for guys who are [trying to get] a good shot are the guys who ride me since I am based in New York. They give me opportunities.”

Over his 13-year career, which included his first winner at Suffolk Downs in September 2012, Davis has slowly moved up the standings as one of the top 10 jockeys on the New York circuit while riding his fair share of stakes winners. He eventually took the New York riding title in 2022 with 186 winners.

Though, a lot of that success could not happen without support of numerous trainers, which includes Clement.

In Fall 2020, Clement had Davis ride Mutamakina in the Long Island Handicap in which they won. For the following year, Davis guided Mutamakina to victory in the E. P. Taylor Stakes and the Dance Smartly Stakes at

Week of August 2 - August 8, 2024

Woodbine.

Last year, Clement gave Davis another opportunity with Carson’s Run, who won his career debut that followed with a close second-place finish in the With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga. A month later, Davis and Carson’s Run won the bet365 Summer Stakes at Woodbine that earned both a trip to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Davis and Carson’s Run reunite again for the Saratoga Derby Invitational as part of Saturday’s Whitney undercard.

WINNER’S CIRCLE

Because of Carson’s Run, Mutamakina and several other horses, Clement had confidence in putting Davis on Pandagate for the UAE Derby at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai as they finished third to Japan’s talented 3-year-old Forever Young.

“Clement has had a big impact on my career as of late,” Davis said. “If he wants me to go somewhere, I am available. He knows that. It’s not like I am going to say ‘no’ to him.”

Another person who has helped him is his father and

retired jockey Robbie Davis. As a teenager, Dylan Davis wanted to be an aspiring motocross racer, not a jockey. With his father’s encouragement, Davis got on horse and enjoyed riding it around the paddock.

“With my father on my side, coach, mentor, everything, I knew he was someone who was going to give me true advice,” he said. “I knew he has been 100 percent on my side. That has been great to have as a top rider in New York. He has helped me to be professional – both on and

off the track – and always think that the camera is on you all of the time. Then, you will never do anything wrong.”

Just like with the other riders, Davis knows it’s difficult to compete at Saratoga – both on and off the track. Along with the challenge of getting horses to ride, there is also the difficult task of making the right decisions on the track.

“It’s tough,” he said. “The other day, there were 34 riders in the room. Many of them had just 1 or 2 mounts. I was riding

seven. It’s a matter of staying focused out there. I’ve been riding for almost 12 years. It’s trial and error through the years.”

“When I have been riding up here, every decision that I have been making has been working out,” he added. “Obviously, you need the horse to get the job done. Whether it is waiting, moving early, staying inside longer, or moving out early and getting the jump, all of those decisions has been all on cue.”

A Champion Returns to Form and A New Track Record

The Saratoga meet once again experienced good weather last weekend allowing another fine weekend of racing. There were two highlights of the week – the Jim Dandy Stakes as a prep race for the Travers Stakes and the Bowling Green run on the grass.

Saturday the Jim Dandy saw a matchup of two-yearold champion Fierceness and

Preakness winner Seize the Grey but the betting favorite was a third entrant - Sierra Leone, who just missed winning the Kentucky Derby and was a formidable third in the Belmont Stakes. The bettors felt that an equipment change would correct the erratic running style which had hampered his late run in both those races. While Sierra Leone did in fact keep a straighter course it was not enough as Fierceness had other plans. Under a heady ride by Hall of Fame veteran rider John Velazquez the former two year old champion held Sierra Leone at bay to easily win the race. Seize the Grey, perhaps showing the effects of a tough recent campaign, was never a factor.

While the Jim Dandy had the horses with name recognition, perhaps the most impressive performance of the week was that of Silver Knott on Sunday in the Bowling Green Stakes. The Godolphin owned, Charlie Appleby

trained, runner continued his winning ways by wiring the field at the elongated distance of a mile and three-eighths on the inner grass course. Silver Knott set a new course record in the process and is still improving. Expect him to be a factor in the year end championship grass races. Notably horses trained by Charlie Appleby continue their successful invasion

from across the Atlantic Ocean besting US-based grass runners time and again – they simply cannot be ignored.

This year’s Saratoga racing has continued to be competitive with a nice balance of longshots and favorites and racing fans were treated to competitive races all week.

For many fans the beginning of August signifies the true start of top-class

spa racing and this week’s Whitney Stakes card is indeed stellar. The highlighted Whitney Stakes will be contested on Saturday August 3rd with a full, if not overly accomplished, field of 12 horses. It figures to be an excellent betting affair and the undercard is loaded with other quality and competitive races. Meanwhile it was announced this week by

Photos courtesy of NYRA

WINNER’S CIRCLE

Trainer Ken McPeek that it is indeed their intention to run the filly Thorpedo Anna against the colts in the Travers Stakes. The aforementioned, Fierceness and Sierra Leone, are both pointing to the same race as is Dornoch and any combination of those horses would produce a very competitive field.

LAID BACK SUNDAYS

A fan pattern has emerged over the past few seasons with Saturday crowds consisting of young partying fans and sophisticated bettors. In contrast the Sunday cards produce a more laid-back fan base. Both the grandstand and clubhouse are filled on Saturdays with stylishly dressed or attention-seeking

young people in a partying mood or veteran horse players enjoying the quality of racing. The Sunday crowd tends to produce more of a country fair atmosphere.

This week one anonymous, yet sage, observer, who goes by the monicker Spa Infield Goose @SaratogaGoose on Twitter, commented about Sunday “it’s a weird over 60-(year-old) scene at the track today”. I take no umbrage at the knock on my generation as weirdness does seem to be growing in my demographic especially since the fowl-named commenter is, as usual, correct. The Sunday crowd in general appears far less knowledgeable about racing than their Saturday or midweek counterparts. For many this is a less intimidating

atmosphere and hopefully will grow the sport, but it is shame that veteran racegoers seem to have abandoned the day and the later races on the Sunday card are contested in front of largely empty stands.

This Sunday constituency may be explained by a lack of racing on Mondays. Fans coming to town for the weekend might be enticed to stay for quality Sunday racing if there were racing on Mondays or at minimum the races were carded to end earlier. While I am told there are structural impediments to running Mondays with a dark day on Wednesday, I continue to be approached by people who express their desire to see that change made. It should be fully explored in future years.

Saratoga Rowers Compete in Paris Olympics

PARIS, FRANCE — Two members of the Saratoga Rowing Association competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics this week and last week: Kristi Wagner and Lauren O’Connor. As of press time, Wagner was scheduled to row in the women’s double sculls B Final on Thursday. O’Connor was slated to compete in the women’s quadruple sculls B Final on Wednesday.

Wagner had finished third in a prior event on Saturday, which allowed her to advance to the semifinals held on Tuesday. In the semifinals, Wagner and her doubles partner Sophia Vitas placed fifth with a time of 07:04.12.

O’Connor’s quadruple sculls team also placed fifth

in their repechage event on Monday morning, sending them to the B Final.

Both Wagner and O’Connor have been knocked out of the running for medals, but their overall placement in the games will depend upon their performances on Thursday and Wednesday, respectively.

The Paris 2024 games marked Wagner’s second Olympic appearance. She previously finished fifth at the 2020 games in Tokyo. For O’Connor, the Paris games were her first time in Olympic competition.

Wagner and Vitas previously won a bronze medal at the 2023 World Rowing Championships. Wagner is the host of a podcast, “The Other 3 Years,” in which she discusses her journey to qualify for the Olympics. Her profile on the Team USA website notes that she enjoys hiking in the Adirondacks. She is currently

the Regatta Director for the Saratoga Rowing Association, where she plans the “Head of the Fish” race held in October on Fish Creek.

O’Connor finished 11th in quadruple sculls at the 2023

World Rowing Championships. She is originally from Belleville, Wisconsin. She has been a coach and athlete at the Saratoga Rowing Association for the past three years.

Saratoga Springs Hiring Assistant Coaches

— The Saratoga Springs City School District is looking to hire a handful of assistant coaches for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year.

Vacant assistant positions include girl’s soccer at Maple Ave Middle School, girl’s crosscountry at Maple Ave, modified

9 boy’s soccer, and junior varsity girl’s volleyball.

The positions are all for the Fall 2024 season and come with a stipend per the Saratoga Springs Teachers Association contract. For more information, visit saratogaschools.recruitfront. com/JobOpportunities.

Local Ballplayer Signed by ValleyCats

TROY — The Tri-City ValleyCats, a professional baseball team competing in the Frontier League, announced Tuesday that they had signed Queensbury native Brett Rodriguez to their roster. Rodriguez made his debut for the team on Tuesday night against the New England Knockouts, playing right field.

Rodriguez was signed to a minor league contract by the Seattle Mariners in 2020. He spent time with the High-A Everett AquaSox, the Single-A Modesto Nuts, and the Indios de Mayagüez team in Puerto Rico. In 2021, he reached the AAA level, playing in two games for the Tacoma Rainiers.

Last year, he had 153 plate appearances for Modesto, finishing with a .693 OPS and 15 stolen bases. In July 2023,

he was released by the Nuts. Earlier this year, he played 39 games with the Milwaukee Milkmen, an independent team based in Wisconsin.

ValleyCats will hit the road for three games against the New York Boulders. Prior to the New England series, Tri-City was 35-31 on the season, placing them fourth in the Frontier League’s East Division.

Glens Falls Dragons Wrap Up Season

GLENS FALLS — The Glens Falls Dragons, an amateur baseball team that competes in the Perfect Game Collegiate League, wrapped up its season last Sunday with a 7-1 loss at home to the Saugerties Stallions.

Overall, the team had a rough season, finishing with a 8-30-1 record. Despite this, the Dragons had some standout individual performances. Dominican outfielder Odilio Cespedes had a .290 batting average in 100 at-bats. He also led the team with 11 RBI. Utility player Cody Meier earned a .282 average across 110 at-bats, and had the second-most RBI with 8.

On the mound, pitcher Riley Orr (a Queensbury native) led the way with 29 strikeouts in 17

After a three-game home series against New England, the innings pitched. Not far behind was southpaw Alfonso Lombardi, who had 27 strikeouts across 26.2 innings. JJ Trudeau, a freshman from Cohoes, had a 3.48 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.
