Editor’s Comment Regular contributors to SARI, Wayne Nauschutz & Fanie Kleynhans, both from the Western Cape, have taken care of the front and back exterior covers of Volume 13 respectively. Wayne was on hand to bag a real cracker of a photo of the newly re-branded Rovos Rail “Shongololo Express”, which was on a 15-day (3620km) Good Hope / Golf Tour of the country recently, while Fanie provided a beautiful photo from 2006 of a short mixed freight, headed by a Class 33 (400) locomotive in her original SAR red & whisker livery, from his considerable photo catalogue. I’ve increased the number of images showcased as double-page spreads from our contributors in this issue in an effort to really maximise their visual appearance & presentation. This will continue in all future issues and the number of double-page spreads will increase further. We start off proceedings with a wonderful photo from Les Pivnic of Class 16DA No. 879 working a specially arranged goods train between Springs and Bethal in March 1990. Eugene Armer’s contributions include three awesome images from his photo archives of Class 34 locomotives that look really stunning in their South African Railways livery working various trains during the 1970s & 1980s. I have to say that I was really chuffed when Eugene sent these three photos through for inclusion and I’m hoping that he will continue to dig deep in his collection for more of these retro classics in the future. Two of Greg Hart’s exceptional station layout drawings, Ficksburg Station & Caledon Station, are featured in this issue. These immaculate drawings really are a fantastic reminder of how integral these stations were to the towns and communities on the South African Railways network that they served – magical and beautiful places indeed! Noel Forster has contributed another twelve images from his 1977 railfanning tour of South Africa, which include a few wonderful photos of narrow gauge workings on the line from Ixopo through to Donnybrook. Once again my sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone who has contributed and helped to produce this issue of SARI, which I believe features a particularly strong collection of photographs from around South Africa and which span some five decades! Enjoy the read everyone! Charles Baker 5

Page 6 & 7: On the 10th of March 1990, a special working with a goods train was arranged by Jean Dulez, and I managed to get several photos of the run myself. In this shot, Class 16DA No. 879 “THEODORA” that was booked to work the train, is seen rounding a curve near Leandra on the line between Springs and Bethal. Photo – Les Pivnic.

Soul of A Railway © By Les Pivnic and Charlie Lewis Les and Charlie are working together on this project to convey to future generations the essence of a once magnificent transport network in South Africa - the South African Railways or SAR. The SAR was divided into nine systems as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Cape Western, based in Cape Town Cape Northern, based in Kimberley Cape Midland, based in Port Elizabeth Cape Eastern, based in East London Orange Free State, based in Bloemfontein Natal, based in Durban Western Transvaal, based in Johannesburg Eastern Transvaal, based in Pretoria South West Africa, based in Windhoek

Charlie is doing systems 1 to 4 while Les is doing systems 5 to 8.

Eugene Armer Photo Gallery Above: Transnet Freight Rail Class 18E locomotives, 18 810 & 18 724, are passing through Metrorail's Rhodesfield Station in Kempton Park, with a Rovos Rail train from Cape Town to Pretoria. The Gautrain Rhodesfield Station on the upper level provides a direct interchange between the two systems (27th April, 2015). Page 10 (Top): On a lovely summer afternoon a quartet of Class 36 diesels (36-102, 36-110, 36090, 36-122) is approaching the Meyer Street bridge in Meyerton, heading towards Leeuhof in Vereeniging with a string of anhydrous ammonia tankers (18th February 2015). Page 10 (Bottom): An aerial view of Millsite depot at Krugersdorp. A set of five Class 34s is idling away with the blue smoke trails clearly visible. Several Class 36s can be seen as well. The line to Mafikeng is on the extreme left and next to it the electrified line in and out of Waterval Yard. For my 60th birthday I treated myself to a helicopter training flip from Krugersdorp airfield and made sure we did a couple of turns over the depot!

Page 12 & 13: The setting sun catches a set of five brand new GE Class 34 diesels smoking it up on a southbound manganese ore train between Witput and Orange River on the Kimberley - De Aar line (March 1975). My notes of this day don't tell me whether this was a 50 or 100 wagon train, but I guess with 5 new diesels it was probably the latter!

Page 14 & 15: Class 34-900 GE U26C diesel 34-906 leads two sisters on an air-braked container train through Kraankuil, northbound to Kimberley. When this shot was taken in May 1981, these locomotives were less than three years old, the class having entered service between 1979 and 1981. Of course, the real reason for the photographer being there was to capture the 25NCs on the 'Steel Kyalami', but 35 years later I'm glad I took this shot! Page 16 & 17: Thirty years ago the "Zimbabwe Mail" still operated weekly between Johannesburg and Bulawayo, consisting of National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) passenger coaches. A SAR air-conditioned dining and kitchen car was allocated to the train from Johannesburg as far as Mafikeng, and the NRZ diner would be added during the night at Artesia siding in Botswana. In March 1986, the train is seen passing Battery behind a pair of Millsite depot GE Class 34 (400) diesels, with 34-456 leading, heading towards Tarlton and Magaliesburg. The SAR twin diner is visible in the curve behind the first six coaches. 11

Class 1E, E25, built in 1923 by Swiss Locomotive & Machine Works. The Class 1E locomotives were the first electric locomotives placed in service by SAR. Behind E25 is Class ES Shunter, E518, a centre cab electric shunting locomotive built in 1952 and known to their crews as “Studebakers”. During 2014 they formed part of a Go Dove auction lot (for scrap). Bart Zaayman commented as follows “when I was still at Transnet I was a member of the group trying to complete the canned railway museum in Car Street. We picked up on these two locos that were on tender for scrap and succeeded in stopping the sale. The idea was to use this 1E, the one at Millsite and the one in Cape Town to build a running one. I since retired and have no idea what is the progress with the old Victoria structure” (14th August 2016).
