The rapture of snowmobile driving
WINTER 2016-2017
A SAARISELKÄ PHOTO: INGA-BRIITTA MAGGA
The ski bus tours around the Saariselkä district The Saariselkä ski bus will once again transport tourists between Ivalo and Kiilopää this winter. The regular daily departures will continue until the spring season. The bus departs from Ivalo in the morning and returns there in the evening. In the day, the bus tours various locations in Saariselkä, Kiilopää, Kakslauttanen and Laanila. There are many stops along the route, especially in Saariselkä. A day ticket costs €5. Children under the age of 7 travel free of charge. The tickets are paid for in cash on the bus. Tourists are advised to carry enough cash with them. The timetables are available at the bus stops, on‑line and on hotel notice boards.
On a snow mobile safari, it is good to leave stress behind and focus on watching and enjoying the scenery. Veli-Tapio Harju from Sipoo has been driving on snow mobiles in Lapland for several years. In Southern Finland, snow is sometimes very scarce, so most people go to Lapland for snow mobile driving. Veli-Tapio Harju has led several snow mobile safaris for his clients alongside his actual job. Harju always rents the snow mobiles from local entrepreneurs. ”It’s the easiest way. Sometimes a local guide has come along, they’re always experts in their areas.” In Harju’s opinion, a suitable snowmobile safari lasts a couple of days and has 5−8 participants. ”It is typical of each safari that someone falls off the tracks and gets stuck into the snow. If eight snowmobiles drive in a safari and every other one slips from the track every once in a while, you can guess that it takes a long time to travel and it’s slow.”
A successful snowmobile safari V-T Harju’s tip number one for a snow mobile safari is that you need to have enough warm clothes. Driving equipment can be found at local snow mobile renters as well. Spare hoods are always good to have with you because your head always sweats under the helmet. The helmet should be chosen from a rental place. It is obligatory for both the driver and the passenger. A spare set of gloves is also good to have. ”And it’s also good to keep a good distance to the person driving ahead of you.” Rear-end collision is the most common accident for snow mobile drivers. The fastest allowed speed for snow mobiles on tracks and in the wilderness is 60 km/h on ground and 80 km/h on
ice-covered lakes. If a sled is attached to the snow mobile for passengers, the fastest allowed speed is 40 km/h. ”It’s good to remember that you should not hurry on a snow mobile ride. Remember to watch the scenery. And enjoy!” When driving on roads meant for snow mobiles and other vehicles indicated in the law, the driver needs to have at least a T-class driver’s license. Outside the roads in the wilderness and on the ice, a driver’s license is not needed as long as the driver is at least 15 years old. ”Sometimes the weather can change quickly while driving on a snowmobile or the snow mobile could get broken. It’s good to be prepared for anything. It’s also good to remember that your mobile phone’s range doesn’t reach everywhere in the wilderness”, reminds Harju. IBM

air temperature needs to drop below 0 degrees Celsius. When the temperature drops sufficiently, ice crystals begin to form around the dust particles in the air as moisture – i.e. water – freezes around them. The ice crystals merge into sixangled sheets, stars, needles and their combinations. They become snowflakes. The form of the snowflake created is determined by the humidity in the air and the temperature. There are no two identical snowflakes.
Snow changes form constantly On its way down to the ground from the cloud, the snowflake might make it
– or melt on the way. A snowflake that has just fallen looks like a six-pointed star. Your moments for admiration are limited, because the mere warmth of your breath is enough to melt the snowflake back into moisture. If you could observe the snowflake for a little longer, you would notice that, even after a couple of hours, the points would not be as distinguishable and fine. The form of a snowflake is in a constant state of change. In just a couple of days, the snowflake you saw would be much simpler in form with more resemblance to a round mass. The points and edges of the particles that formed the snowflake keep retreating back inward.

A SAARISELKÄ Angry Birds Activity Park is buzzing with people. Cold and rainy weather changes the holiday plans of many families. In connection with the holiday spa hotel Saariselkä is located at Angry Birds Activity Park, providing plenty of active fun for children and parents for the whole day. The starting point of the park is physical activity – the devices do not make
people move, but rather people make the devices move. Hanna Ruusuvuori has come to Lapland from Northern Karelia with her family. They have taken a hiking tour and stayed in cabins in Saariselkä for a week. The family has taken day trips to the fells and nearby terrain. The cool weather brought Hanna Ruusuvuori and her chil-
dren to Angry Birds Park. ”It’s nice that there aren’t many people here today. We don’t have to wait in queus to take rides in the devices. And it’s also great that parents have something to do and they can do things with children. Just now I had to throw a spear and shoot with cannon,” explains family mother Hanna Ruusuvuori about her day. The park’s theme is space
Angry Birds Get the Kids Moving and the ambience of Lapland, which is very suitable for the fell environment. The park’s specialty is a long and exciting adventure course which includes different kinds of active tasks. There’s climbing, balancing over a gulley, a cable car, and much more. The park has ten points for active tasks, providing physical activity to children and peo-
ple of all ages. According to Holiday Club Saariselkä hotel’s hotel manager Annamaija Putkonen, visitor numbers vary by seasons a lot. For example, school holiday weeks are very active, as well as December. “It’s really nice to have the opportunity to provide activities especially to children, as we are a family ho-
tel. Definitely a large number of holiday visitors here want to spend time in outdoors activities, but the park is a good addition providing and excellent opportunity to spend an active day indoors,” says Putkonen from Holiday Club Saariselkä. Inga-Briitta Magga

A Moment of Well-Being The Aurora Spa beauty salon is located in the Holiday Club Saariselkä hotel and within the Hotel Ivalo in Ivalo. At the Aurora Spa beauty salon you can enjoy relaxing treatments and allover pampering. − Our treatments can give
strength, refreshment, and a relaxed feeling for both the body and mind. Sami music, which transports the listener to the wonders of the arctic nature, adds the finishing touch to your feel-good experience, Aurora Spa beautician Sanna Niemelä tells us. Among other treatments, the Aurora Spa offers special Lapland treatments with an element of Lapland mystique. − One of our treatments is the Midnight Sun Facial Treatment, which uses gifts of the wild nature of the
North, such as lingonberries and cloudberries that have absorbed the power of the nightless summer of Lapland. Treatments for expectant mothers are another specialty of this northern beauty salon. There is even a special treatment for children, where small hands or feet are gently massaged and the nails polished. Men, women and children are all welcome at the Aurora Spa. Inga-Briitta Magga

”We had dinner at Laanilan Kievari. Perhaps the best meal I’ve ever had; the food was heavenly, the service and expertise incredibly enjoyable. The descriptions of the dishes were wonderful and the wine recommendations were spot on throughout the meal. As a bonus, the ambience was wonderful, complete with a crackling fireplace.” These words are used to describe Laanilan Kievari on the TripAdvisor website. TripAdvisor is an international website, founded in the year 2000, where members can post pictures or write reviews of travel destinations, hotels and restaurants all over the world. The TripAdvisor website has approximately 300 million users. Operating in a social media environment, TripAdvisor helps people to plan their trips and to select travel destinations by hosting reviews provided by users with descriptions of the level of service and quality of businesses in different holiday destinations. Laanilan Kievari’s restaurant manager Samuli Ruotsalainen is proud to show off the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence award, which Laanilan Kievari has received in the mail twice already. The certificate is awarded annually to businesses that achieve a high level of positive feedback. Laanilan Kievari was named the best place to eat in Saariselkä already in 2014, and also the best place to eat out of 166 restaurants in the whole of Lapland. The restaurant maintained its position as number one also in 2015 and again 2016. − It’s great to receive concrete proof of our good food and customer service. It lets you know that you’ve done a successful job, Laanilan Kievari’s restaurant manager Samuli Ruotsalainen explains. Laanilan Kievari is a family business based in Laanila, as its name suggests. Laanila is located a few kilometres south of Saariselkä on the E4. Kievari’s menu emphasises northern tastes and utilises local produce as much as possible. In addition to restaurant services, the building offers two saunas with a capacity of up to 30 people. There is also a 10-person outdoor hot tub on the shore right next to the sauna. New activity for the winter:
COME AND TRY THE QUADBIKE CHALLENGE!!!
Petronella and Pirkon Pirtti Serve the Best Delicacies in Lapland Restaurant Petronella has been one of the most popular restaurants in Lapland already since 1989. People have been enjoying the delicacies of Lapland in these atmospheric surroundings nearly for 15 years now. This winter the menu consists of mainly organic and local food. Nordic forests and waters are a wonderful source of ingredients, which we use to create our appetizing dishes. Reindeer is the most famous food from here, and reindeer meat is used to create tasty dishes both for starters and main courses. There is an amazing pulled reindeer burger and pizzas with high-quality ingredients on the new menu. Grouse has always been a favourite on menus. Petronella offers both delicacies, reindeer and grouse, served
on the same plate; for example roasted grouse breast and reindeer pepper steak. The restaurant provides an enchanting frame for an atmospheric dinner – how does an evening around the fire place, in good company and with delicious treats on your plate sound? During the holiday season we offer a traditional Christmas buffet on December 24. A table reservation is recommended. Daily opening hours for the Christmas holidays are from 3 pm until 11 pm. Restaurant Petronella is open every day from 6 pm to 11 pm until the end of April. Restaurant Pirkon Pirtti’s fame is based on something as simple as good food and great atmosphere. Last summer the restaurant was redecorated and now it reflects the spirit of Lapland with a fresh
new breath. The fire places of both dining rooms host a cheerful flame in the evenings. It is a pleasure to arrive in the warm and welcoming atmosphere at Pirkon Pirtti. It feels like coming home. The restaurant menu consists of all the familiar delicacies of Lapland, but new flavours have also been included. Peppered salmon or reindeer fillet carpaccio will impress even the most experienced of gourmands. As a main course we definitely recommend you try a selection of Nordic fish; salmon, white fish and Arctic char on the same platter; all of the best fish in Lapland at once. Or you can have reindeer either as a reindeer fry or as a fillet. Pizza is also served at Pirkon Pirtti, and the ingredients of Lapland are offered
as pizza toppings too. The youngest food lovers in the family will have their own menu. Pirkon Pirtti is open every day from 3 pm to 11 pm until the end of April. In these two restaurants you can experience the spirit of Lapland and take home a wonderful memory from the north.
Saariselkä’s water is clean Teerenpesä Gourmet Platter At Saariselkä you can drink clean water straight from the tap. Drinking water comes from three pump stations. The upper water station is on the southern slope of Kaunispää and contains 200,000 litres of water
reserves, which is enough for around 24 hours for the whole of Saariselkä. Pumped from an average depth of 20 metres underground, the ground water requires no treatment before drinking.
Offers Fish and Reindeer Restaurant Teerenpesä recommends the Lapland gourmet platter as a starter, which offers you all the traditional ingredients from Lapland such as salmon, reindeer, fish roe and mushrooms. The food is served in the dining room, which the host family has turned into a local living room for the people of Saariselkä with their long opening hours. Teerenpesä is open almost all year round and every day between noon and 4 am during the autumn and winter seasons. The restaurant menu includes different types of reindeer dishes, f r o m
simple reindeer fillet to well stewed reindeer dishes. To follow the starter and the main course, you can order mouth-watering delicacies from the dessert menu, which are made with berries and different kinds of chocolates for example. - It’s a pleasure to cook with good quality ingredients, chef Juha Rutanen smiles. Teerenpesä invests particularly in local food. Fish comes from the Lake Inari, reindeer meat from Tolonen village near Ivalo. Berries and mushrooms are picked by local people. − Sautéed reindeer and Lake Inari whitefish are the most popular
of our traditional dishes, hostess Armi Rutanen says. The pub menu offers dishes from small snacks to hamburgers and chicken wings. At the pub you can follow sports channels on big screen or play darts and billiards. At Teerenpesä you can also sing karaoke and choose songs from an extensive, international song list. Professional DJs will know how to get you in the mood for dancing and the disco boasts very modern lighting technology. Ladies nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays are already legendary at Teerenpesä. Some of the party-goers have become regulars. - On a great night we’ve had nearly four hundred people dancing, Armi Rutanen says.

Restaurant Huippu’s hit is the crowberry cake A cake made from unripened cheese and crowberries (also called kaarnikka in Lapland) is attracting so many clients to the Huippu restaurant in Kaunispää that you could call the cake a hit. The exact recipe is a secret but the chef de cuisine Jorma Lehtinen reveals that the cake’s filling has been curdled from cold-pressed crowberry juice. The cake built on top of cookies made in Finland is crowned by a crowberry glaze. The restaurant offers other berry pastries as well: cloudberry-quark pie and blueberry-raspberry pie. And of course Huippu’s worldfamous donuts. You can also enjoy gluten-
free cloudberry muffins and bread at Huippu. In February, you can taste shrove buns with generous fillings. All Huippu’s pastries are made on site from the start and they are offered fresh every day. Huippu’s ”kurniekka” is a fish pie developed from the traditional Skolt Sami dish, and it does not contain pork fat. Kurniekka is baked into oat dough and filled with whitefish, salmon and cold-smoked salmon and it is served heated with a butter patty. Huippu’s pastry cabinet includes stuffed sandwiches and mildly salted salmon sandwiches made from fresh salmon. The pizza slices are

Arctic nights and lights in Nuorgam Nuorgam Holiday Village, the northernmost holiday village in Finland, offers high quality accommodation all year round. Even though the café-restaurant is closed during the slower seasons, group meals can be arranged if ordered in advance. Thanks to
its arctic location, Nuorgam is one of the best places to see the northern lights. There is no light pollution, such as street lights, to disrupt the aurora display in Nuorgam. Trips to see the northern lights have become increasingly popular in Nuorgam.
The Nuorgam Holiday Village offers a variety of different activities and services around the northern lights. For instance, it’s possible to rent snow shoes. Transportation services to nearby fells
by car or snowmobile are also available. − Our customers can book a northern lights wake-up call, which means that we will wake them up as soon as the northern lights appear,
Marjatta Holmberg of the Nuorgam Holiday Village tells us. − We can also give lessons in how to photograph the northern lights and how to use a camera. Camera stands are also available. The northern lights season begins in the end of August
and lasts until April. Late autumn is the perfect time for taking a trip to view the northern lights. You can enjoy the glorious colours of the autumn foliage in the fells at the same time. Inga-Briitta Magga

Local Reindeer and Game Inarin Luonnonporo Oy is living busy times. Reindeer come and go. New reindeer round-ups all the time. But the smile on Mika Hindström’s face has not faded. ”During the seasons in this profession, you have to work long days,” says Mika Hindström from Inarin Luonnonporo Oy. Mika Hindström came to the north from south with
his wife Nina Hindström. Mika has worked 26 years in the restaurant business. He has been a chef in most restaurants in Helsinki, e.g. Sasliki, Mamma Rosa and Kaivohuone. ”I wanted to do something else with my life than spend it in the rush hour traffic of Länsi-Väylä road. I had two options: go to Lapland or to the sea, to the archipelago. ”
At first, Inarin Luonnonporo Oy was run by reindeer men. In 2009, Mika and Nina became partners in a meat processing firm. In spring 2010, the Culinari product brand was born. ”Inari is the largest municipality in Finland and its slogan is ”strong by nature”. Our products are also naturally strong and we avoid unnecessary additives. The majority
of our products have been produced completely without E code additives. ”Last year was difficult. Culinari products ran out in the middle of the year. As an entrepreneur, I’m a little worried about the price development of reindeer meat. ” ”The raised price of reindeer meat seems incredible when considering the constant layoffs and downsizings
Winter forests are full of activity The northern winter takes up more than half of the year. The land is covered in snow for seven months or so, the average daily temperature stays below zero; the soil is frozen and sunlight scarce.
The period void of light, known as the polar night, takes place mid-winter, and lasts for roughly five weeks in December and January in the latitudes of Saariselkä. The coldest temperatures are usu-

ally experienced in January and February. March is the time for the highest amount of snowfall. Winter truly is the most dominating season in Lapland. The winter is not, however, dead time in nature. Animal tracks, feeding places and droppings visible in the snow reveal the activities of the animals, with the acquisition of food often being the highlight of a winter day. The most familiar tracks in the snow are probably those left by a hare. Another set of very familiar tracks, called “crawler track marks” by the locals, is left by the willow grouse, a winter inhabitant of the area. The tracks of
a willow grouse can often be seen crisscrossing from one birch tree to the next, as it searches for buds to feed on. The willow grouse is a habitat-specific bird species, and around the time the first snow falls, the bird’s plumage turns white. The tracks of a willow grouse are sometimes followed by the tracks of a fox, as the small predator has preyed on the dainty grouse. On some occasions, the preying pays off, and this can be detected by signs of a fight in the snow, with loose feathers around the spot. If you have sharp eyes, you may be able to find miniscule imprints left by small mam-
in Finland. And then there is Russia as our neighbour, and due to their actions, the price of other meat types is getting lower. All this combined is a scary equation. I still believe that there is demand for reindeer meat because of its delicious taste.” Valuable and rare bear meat Culinari’s selections also include bear meat. The inside roast of a bear is the most valuable steak meat. Sautéed bear is also a consumers’ favourite. ”Bear’s meat has a strong
taste of game. I would compare it to the meat of a wood grouse. Bear’s meat is valuable and rare because there are only 130 bears available to hunt each year, and there’s a lot of competition for them.” In addition to reindeer and bear, Culinari also offers moose meat and willow grouse. ”And nearly all ingredients come to us from the area of the municipality of Inari. That’s our goal.”
mals. Moles and lemmings live under the snow cover, but they do make occasional visits to the surface of the snowdrift. These small rodents are preyed on by weasels and stoats. The weasel is the smallest beast of prey in the world.
any given time of the year. In winter, lichens growing beneath the snow are the reindeer’s primary source of nutrition. Big holes dug in the snow, called kiekerös, are created by the reindeer digging for lichen.
Reindeer “kiekerös”
The bear, scrambling into its nest by October, shows no sign of life during the winter, but the bear sow does give birth in her nest in February or March. At birth, the cubs weigh less than a kilogram. The sow suckles the cubs through the winter. Bear milk is extremely rich in nutrition and the cubs grow at a fast pace. Only when spring is well advanced do the sow and cubs leave the nest. Krstiina Aikio
The most often spotted species in the area is the reindeer. You can deduce the size of the animal in question based on the tracks it has left behind. These tracks are important for reindeer herders, even though they know, based on previous experience, the areas in which the main part of the reindeer herd will be at
