The first snow falls in Saariselkä in September or October
Winter in Lapland lasts over seven months, or around 200 days The first snow usually falls in Saariselkä around September or October. When the mean daily temperature remains below 0 degrees Celsius, winter has officially begun in Saariselkä. - Winter sort of creeps in. For example, lingonberries may just be getting ripe for picking when we see the first snowfalls in the Saariselkä area, says Kristiina Aikio of Metsähallitus, Parks & Wildlife Finland. During the winter season, she oversees the
activities of the Aurora nature hut in the Urho Kekkonen National Park.
Winter lasts over seven months Winter in Lapland lasts over seven months, or around 200 days. - Saariselkä is located over 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, which means that winter is our longest season, Kristiina Aikio says. Winter always means snow
in Lapland, and the white snow brings much needed light to the darkness of the winter months. The temperatures aren’t always freezing in Saariselkä, though. It’s quite possible to have warmer weather and wet snow as early as December. For the residents and holidaymakers in the North, snow is an element that allows many activities - such as skiing - that would be impossible during the warmer months. - In the spring, the crusted snow gets so hard you can even ride a bike on top of the thick layer of snow. Snow hardens into a crust when it melts slightly during the day but freezes over again during the night. We often get this kind of snow in April, Kristiina Aikio says. You can even sculpt snow into works of art or use it to build all kinds of constructions. - A snow sculpture is easy to make. You need a cardboard box, which you pack tightly with snow. You can wrap a string around the box to tighten it further. When you remove the cardboard from around the cube of snow, you can then use a sharp knife to sculpt the snow into the desired shape.
Snow protects animals from the cold Snow can also provide protection from harsh winter temperatures. Many animals spend the long winter hiding underneath the snow. Once the snow cover reaches depths of 30 to 40 centimetres, the temperature underneath the snowpack generally remains slightly below freezing at 1-2 °C, regardless of the temperature above the snow cover. If there is no snow, the temperature of the unprotected ground may drop to 25 degrees below freezing when the air around it is at -35 °C. - Winter makes no difference to the animals; they get on with their lives as normal. During the winter, their main occupation can be foraging for food. Some birds live in the Saariselkä area yearround. We have around 30 wintering species here, Kristiina Aikio explains.
The snow cover is thinnest on the fells The snow cover is hardest and thinnest on the fells, where it’s always windy. The beautiful crown snow-load is formed when wet snow accumulates on treetops.
- The amount of crown snow on one tree may weigh as much as an elephant. The tapered spruce, which is also known as candle spruce, is able to withstand the weight of the snow better than other trees. It can bend all the way to the ground without breaking, Kristiina Aikio says. The coldest time of the year in Saariselkä is usually the beginning of February. The polar night lasts around five
weeks in Saariselkä and two months in Nuorgam. - When the day begins to lengthen after the Winter Solstice, the amount of light increases by about five minutes every week. The first bird to return to the North is the pine grosbeak. Spring begins when the mean daily temperature rises and remains above 0°C. Tarja Karjalainen

Find your favourite from 15 slopes! Saariselkä - Europe’s northernmost ski resort Saariselkä, Europe’s northernmost ski resort, offers 15 slopes and six lifts. Whether you’re a first-time skier or an old hand, you’re bound to find the perfect slope in Saariselkä. When you get bitten by the skiing bug, you can find all the equipment you need in Saariselkä’s Ski Shop. - You’ll find everything you
need here, from equipment to ski passes and even a ski school. We offer a great selection of quality skiing gear for rent. There’s no point in lugging your skis or your snowboard all the way here, when it’s so easy to rent top class equipment on the spot, customer service representative Noora Portti says. Ski School Saariselkä is
here to help both beginners and experienced skiers. Kids and young people have their own ski school programme. - In addition to alpine skiing we have special classes in snowboarding, telemark and cross-country skiing. Lessons must always be booked in advance. Our ski instructors are qualified, inspiring and multilingual pro-
fessionals. Instruction is available in Finnish, Swedish and English. When booking, you can also enquire about instruction in other languages. - With first-timers, we make sure to talk about safety equipment and safe behaviour on the slopes. We recommend helmet use for all those venturing on the slopes.
We also recommend wearing a back protector in the freestyle park, Noora says. Children’s slopes and those reached by the platter lifts are the safest slopes for firsttime skiers. - Children younger than the regular age range may take part in private lessons, but it’s good to remember that small children often get tired before
the full 90 minutes are up. The duration of a private lesson is 90 minutes. The ski school also offers packages with equipment, ski passes and instruction all included. - Everybody is sure to find what they need here. We wish you welcome to the Ski Shop, Noora Portti says.

Try tobogganing – it’s also for grown-ups! Do you want to experience the thrill of speed or admire the majestic Lapland views from high up the hill – but don’t feel like skiing? In that case, tobogganing or snow tubing is for you! You can find the snow tubing tracks in the lift entrance area. Snow tubing is a great family activity. The 1800 m long toboggan run has three tracks to choose from. The red track has a couple of turns of moderate difficulty and it takes you back to the ski centre. The blue track runs down to the Centre of Saariselkä. It’s more gently sloping, but you can still achieve decent speeds on it. The green track, which also takes you back to the ski centre, is the easiest and most suitable for small children. You can take the chairlift near the Ski Shop to the top of the toboggan run. You will need a regular lift ticket for the lift. You can buy one or more lift trips. Once you get up, the top lift station has directions showing you which way to go. You can use any of the toboggans available for free in the Saariselkä area, or you can bring your own toboggan

sled. The Ski Shop also rents out slightly bigger toboggans, which are easier to control. We recommend wearing a helmet in the toboggan run. Ski goggles are a good idea if you want to avoid getting snow in your eyes. The chairlift takes you to the top of the Kaunispää fell.
Layer up for the elements Whether you’re planning a day on the slopes or giving cross-country a go, dressing right is the key. If you find yourself feeling a little too warm or too cold on the slopes or ski tracks, you’re probably not dressing right for the occasion! - Dressing in layers is especially important in the spring, because it can get pretty warm with the sun and the exercise. You can easily peel off layers as needed, Noora Portti of Ski Saariselkä explains. The principle of layering is simple: you need a good wicking base layer next to the skin, an insulating mid-layer and an outer layer, which protects you from wind, rain and moisture. Nina recommends choosing thin, long socks for skiing. Special ski socks are also available. - You don’t need a thick woollen sock, because ski boots are quite warm. Even if your boots are the right size for you, really thick woollen socks can make them feel too snug or chafe your feet, Noora says. Helmets are also available for rent in the Ski Shop, but ski goggles are not. If you

Ready to give skiing a go?
ON THE MAIN STREET
SAARISELKÄ
You may only go on the ski trails on skis With up to 250 kilometres of groomed tracks in the Saariselkä and Kiilopää area in winter, it’s easy for anyone to try cross-country skiing. There are 34 kilometres of lighted trails. If you’ve never tried cross-country skiing before, now is your chance! Skis can be rented, and the ski school is there to help you get started. Cross-country skiing has two basic techniques: the classic style and skate skiing. You will need different
kinds of skis depending on the technique. You can experience skiing on groomed tracks among gorgeous scenery, from fells to pine forests and riversides. The trails vary from easy to demanding. The trails are marked on a map with different colours based on the level of difficulty. The ski trails start from the centre of Saariselkä, from the starting point of the Urho Kekkonen National Park trails near Santa’s Hotel Tunturi. The starting point is
marked with a signpost in the colours of the northern lights.
Don’t walk on the tracks! You may not walk on the skiing trails, as they are for skiing only. It’s dangerous to stand or walk on the skiing trails, since you can be hit by a fast-moving skier. The Aurorapolku trail is a good way to get into nature with no skis required.
The Aurorapolku trail takes you into the lap of nature safely and easily Starting from near the centre of Saariselkä, the Aurorapolku trail takes you straight into the lap of nature in the Urho Kekkonen National Park. The trail is safe and easy for non-skiers. At 2.1 kilometres, the Aurorapolku trail is ideal for children, too. When the skies are clear, you can admire the starry northern sky or marvel at the sight of the northern lights, or aurora borealis. The Aurora cottage, or Northern Lights cottage, is located along the trail. It provides shelter and an ideal vantage point for nature viewing when it’s cold and snowing. The Aurorapolku trail begins from the starting gate
of the Urho Kekkonen National Park in Saariselkä. You can recognise the gate by the signpost with the colourful northern lights. The trail is circular, so it ends right where you started. You don’t have to worry about getting lost, as long as you follow the signposts along the route. You can take the trail in winter, too. It takes at least one hour to go around the trail. The trail is not lighted, so you should bring a torch for when it gets dark. The Aurora cottage is located about halfway down the trail, around 700 metres from the starting point. There are toilets and a campfire site
The signpost of the Aurorapolku trail looks like this. The trail is 2.1 kilometres long. It’s circular, so it ends right where you started. Follow the signposts and you can’t get lost!

The blue dusk of the polar night falls over Saariselkä at the beginning of December. The sun goes down on the eve E75 of Independence Day and it will not rise above the horizon again until the Epiphany. 4 Even though the sun does not rise, the polar night does not mean complete darkness. The nature is enveloped by a blue dusk, which is created by the light of the moon, stars and Northern Lights, reflected by the snow. It is not pitch-dark

At Saariselkä you can drink clean water straight from the tap. Drinking water comes from three pump stations. The upper water station is on the southern slope of Kaunispää and contains 200,000 litres of water reserves, which is enough for around 24 hours for the whole of Saariselkä. Pumped from an average depth of 20 metres underground, the ground water requires no treatment before drinking.

Europe’s northernmost spa is in Saariselkä
– enjoy a traditional Finnish sauna The spa located in Saariselkä is the northernmost spa in Europe. You can enjoy a traditional Finnish sauna – or why not give the herbal sauna a go! There’s nothing so relaxing as a hot sauna after a day
spent outdoors. Men and women have separate saunas and dressing rooms. The steam sauna is communal. The spa boasts jacuzzies, massaging jets and a wa-
ter slide. Parents are responsible for the safety of their own children in the pool area. Swimsuits may be rented from the spa.
For kids Angry Birds Activity Park The Angry Birds Activity Park is in the same building as the spa hotel. The activities in the park revolve around two themes; space and Lapland. The park’s main attraction is the long and exciting adventure track with different challenges, such as climbing, balancing over a gorge, ziplining etc. The park has ten different activity points, which provide sporting activities to people of all ages. Examples of activities suitable for both kids and parents are the ball game rink and the Angry Birds shooting game. Bigger kids have their own adventure area with tunnels and slides. Young people and grown-ups have their own game lounge. There are rest stops near the different activity points for parents to take a breather. The park has a cafe that offers snacks and drinks. You can also purchase a joint ticket which gives you entry to both the spa and the Angry Birds Activity Park.

Doctor on call 24/7 in Ivalo
Should you suddenly fall ill during your holiday in Lapland, treatment is available at the health centre in Ivalo. Sick tourists are treated daily in the Ivalo health centre according to Outi Liisanantti, Inari municipality’s medical director.
- Plenty of foreign tourists use the health centre’s on-call services. Foreign travellers are treated every week in the inpatient ward, too, Outi Liisanantti says. Treatment is paid for on the spot in cash or by payment card. Your traveller’s insurance may compensate you for the cost once you get back home. Citizens of the EU, Nordic countries, UK and Canada must prove their right to treatment by providing a certificate. This can be a valid European Health Insurance Card, photo ID or passport.
Fractures are among the most common injuries - We mostly treat fractures, which sometimes require surgery at the Lapland Central Hospital in Rovaniemi. Sometimes we apply a plaster cast in Ivalo to make the trip to Rovaniemi less painful.

Siida is the National Museum of the Finnish Sámi Siida, which is located in the village of Inari about 70 km from Saariselkä, is the National Museum of the Sámi of Finland. The Sámi are an indigenous people inhabiting parts of northern Finland, Norway and Sweden as well as the Kola Peninsula of Russia. The Sámi have their own language. Approximately 6,000 Sámi people live in Fin-
land. Many of the Sámi in Finland now live outside the Sámi region in the north. For instance, Finland’s capital Helsinki has a relatively large and active Sámi minority. The Sámi Museum Siida stores the spiritual and material culture of the Finnish Sámi in its collections and presents it to the public through its exhibitions and publications.
Siida’s main purpose is to support the identity and the cultural self-esteem of the Sámi. At Siida, you can explore several temporary exhibitions on cultural, artistic and natural themes every year. In addition to exhibitions, Siida organises events that focus on culture and nature, as well as seminars. The Nature Centre of Metsähallitus is also in Siida. There is also a restaurant in the building. The shop sells souvenirs, handicrafts and literature. The word “siida” is North Sámi, and it means a Lapp village or a reindeer village and the neighbourhood within it.

Tips for arctic motoring Are you planning on driving on your holiday in Lapland? Motoring in arctic road conditions is something you may not have had to do back home. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when driving in Lapland.

First of all: make sure your driver’s license entitles you to drive motor vehicles in Finland. If you have a driving license issued in another EU or EEA Member State, or an interim driving licence issued in the Nordic countries, you may drive motor vehicles in Finland. You may also drive in Finland if you hold a driving license issued in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan or a country that has signed the Geneva or Vienna Road Traffic Convention and you can present either an international driving license or an official Finnish or Swedish translation of your national license. Chinese driving licenses are not valid in Finland. However, if you’re from China and you’re over 15 years of age, you may drive a snowmobile in Finland. Winter tyres are compulsory in Finland from the first of December. Roads can be dangerously icy in the mornings, and there’s often snow as well. Winter tyres are equipped with studs, which provide necessary traction for braking and acceleration. Winter tyres are required in Finland from the beginning of December until the end of February. In Lapland, winter tyres are used well into May.
Use a heater to keep windows frost-free

You will need these tools to drive in Lapland. The ice scraper is for cleaning ice from the windows - inside and out. The brush is for brushing off snow from the roof, windows and air intake vents. These are normally slots at the bottom of the windscreen.
Sajos is located in Inari, 40 minutes from Ivalo airport
Before you start the car, make sure you know how to work the heater and how to switch your high beams off and on. Use the defroster to keep the windscreen clear while driving. If you’re unsure about how your car’s heating system works, ask the car hire company for advice. Staff at any service station may also be able to help. Make sure there’s enough fuel in the tank for the route you have planned, since service stations can be few and far apart in Lapland. Clean your windows, the roof and air intake vents of ice and snow. Use an ice
scraper to remove ice from the windows. Make sure you have one in the car! You will also need a brush for brushing off snow from the car. While ventilation is crucial to preventing fogging, you should also make sure that the interior surfaces of the windows are clean and that you don’t bring excessive moisture inside the car in the form of snow and moisture on clothes and shoes. Windscreen wipers and lights are important for visibility, so make sure that they are clean and working properly. Cars are equipped with separate block heaters, which can be used to pre-heat the engine, for example in the morning after an especially cold night.
Make sure the road is meant for cars! If you pull over to the side of the road, make sure that other drivers can see you, especially when it’s dark. Before you turn into a side road or any route where there are no other cars, make sure the road is indeed a road and not a snowmobile track! A wide cross-country skiing trail can also look a lot like a road in the dark. Don’t rely solely on your navigation device. Check that the route is really meant for cars, for example by walking up the road a few metres. If you do venture on a road that’s not meant for cars, you can get stuck in the snow! Keep in mind that braking distances are considerably longer in winter conditions. Watch out for reindeer, which can often be seen roaming the roads!

You can explore modern Sámi culture and enjoy nature in Utsjoki In Utsjoki, the northernmost municipality in the European Union, nature is always close to you. Utsjoki has been inhabited for over 10000 years. Utsjoki is the only municipality in Finland with a Sámi majority population. You can explore everyday modern Sámi culture and enjoy the peace of nature in Utsjoki.
A modern holiday village on the banks of the border river The river Teno, which flows through the village of Utsjoki, is a border river between Finland and Norway. It’s possible to cross the border from Finland to Norway by foot over the Sami Bridge. You can also walk across the frozen river in winter. If you would like to experience the life of a Sámi reindeer herder, head to the Holiday Village Valle on the Teno river in Utsjoki. Holiday Village Valle’s hotel Deatnu is the northernmost hotel in the European Union. The stylish and modern hotel rooms have been designed with Lapland-inspired colour schemes. The large windows provide a view of the beautiful scenery outside, and you can even see Norway across the river. Holiday Village Valle also offers cabins and apartments where you can enjoy a Finnish sauna and gather around the fireplace afterwards. Holiday Village Valle’s hotel Deatnu is the northernmost hotel in the European Union.
The owner looks after his reindeer in the mornings Petteri Valle, the owner of the Valle Holiday Village, begins each day by feeding the reindeer that live in his yard. At the end of the day he visits the animals for another feeding – and he knows all of the reindeer by name. Reindeer are normally allowed to roam free in the wild, but at the Valle reindeer farm the animals live in large enclosures. This way it’s easier for tourists to interact with them. Reindeer may be kept in enclosures also when the females are calving or when the animals have trouble finding sufficient food in winter. - My son owns the family’s reindeer now, but since I was born and raised a reindeer herder and have been taking care of them for so long, I couldn’t dream of not looking after them myself, Petteri Valle says. Holiday Village Valle organises various activities around the year so that you can experience the life of a reindeer herder and explore the local culture and history. A reindeer safari allows you to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of nature and - if you’re lucky - even admire the northern lights while sitting in a sleigh pulled by reindeer through the snowy forests. In summer, the trips are done by foot or in dog-drawn carts. Holiday Village Valle also organises dogsledding, skiing and snow-

You can also try fishing on a fell lake or take a simply take a nature walk to admire the northern lights. - All our tours are led by experienced guides who know the surroundings and conditions well. We provide our customers with warm gear, which is essential in the wilderness of Lapland, Petteri Valle says. The nature in the Utsjoki area is pure and clean. For example, the water in the area is mostly potable. You can also pick and eat wild berries and mushrooms.
The gákti is the national costume of the Sámi The owner of the Holiday Village often wears the gákti, which is the traditional Sámi costume. The colours, patterns and decorations of the costume are used to signify the family relations and geographical origins of the wearer to other Sámi people. - Today the gákti is mostly a ceremonial outfit, but to me it’s everyday wear. My son and I like to wear the gákti while working so our guests can see what the traditional Sámi folk costume looks like, Petteri Valle says. He still remembers how the gákti was an ordinary, everyday outfit in the Utsjoki area in the 70s. - Whenever I visit elderly Sámi people, for example for birthday celebrations, I wear the gákti. guests with a unique experience in the stunning scenery of Utsjoki in Lapland. You will also find that although we live on the edge of the EU, we have all the modern conveniences you could wish for, Petteri Valle says. Tarja Karjalainen
