The rapture of snowmobile driving Veli-Tapio Harju from Sipoo has been driving on snow mobiles in Lapland for several years. In Southern Finland, snow is sometimes very scarce, so most people go to Lapland for snow mobile driving. Veli-Tapio Harju has led several snow mobile safaris for his clients alongside his actual job. Harju always rents the snow mobiles from local entrepreneurs. ”it’s the easiest way. Sometimes a local guide has come along, they’re always experts in their areas.” In Harju’s opinion, a suitable snowmobile safari lasts a couple of days and has 5−8 participants. ”It is typical of each safari that someone falls off the tracks and gets stuck into the snow. If eight snowmobiles drive in a safari and every other one slips from the track every once in a while, you can guess that it takes a long time to travel and it’s slow.”

The ski bus tours around the Saariselkä district The Saariselkä ski bus will once again transport tourists between Ivalo and Kiilopää this winter. The regular daily departures will continue until the spring season. The bus departs from Ivalo in the morning and returns there in the evening. In the day, the bus tours various locations in Saariselkä, Kiilopää, Kakslauttanen and Laanila. There are many stops along the route, especially in Saariselkä. A day ticket costs €5. Children under the age of 6 travel free of charge. The tickets are paid for in cash on the bus. Tourists are advised to carry enough cash with them. the wilderness and on the ice, a driver’s license is not needed as long as the driver is at least 15 years old. ”Sometimes the weather can change quickly while driving on a snowmobile or the snow mobile could get broken. It’s good to be prepared for anything. It’s also good to remember that your mobile phone’s range doesn’t reach everywhere in the wilderness”, reminds Harju. IBM

Snow changes form constantly On its way down to the ground from the cloud, the snowflake might make it – or

melt on the way. A snowflake that has just fallen looks like a six-pointed star. Your moments for admiration are limited, because the mere warmth of your breath is enough to melt the snowflake back into moisture. If you could observe the snowflake for a little longer, you would notice that, even after a couple of hours, the points would not be as dis-

tinguishable and fine. The form of a snowflake is in a constant state of change. In just a couple of days, the snowflake you saw would be much simpler in form with more resemblance to a round mass. The points and edges of the particles that formed the snowflake keep retreating back inward.

Japanese flower arranging in the fells

Tuomo and Katri Jantunen came to Kiilopää during the fall foliage. This time they packed their car full of vases and glass cups when they left their home in Southern Finland. The Jantunens organized an ikebana workshop for visitors of Kiilopää on a couple of nights. In addition, they had an exhibition in the downstairs of Suomen Latu Kiilopää. Katri Jantunen has studied ikebana for eight years in the community college of Kalliola. Ikebana is Japanese, and it means ‘living flowers’ in English. Ikebana is a Japanese art of flower arrangement, and its leading principle is to combine nature and human condition through arranging flowers and other components in the arrangements. ”The arrangement is done so that it will be viewed from a particular direction, and it is placed next to a wall. The symbolic viewer of an ikebana is the sun. The twigs

In Saariselkä, ski tracks and slopes are already open when the polar night begins and skiing and downhill skiing is entirely possible in the well-lit conditions of the tracks and slopes. When the sun rises again on the Epiphany, it stays

Saariselkä’s water is clean

At Saariselkä you can drink clean water straight from the tap. Drinking water comes from three pump stations. The upper water station is on the southern slope of Kaunispää and contains 200,000 litres of water reserves, which is enough for around 24 hours for the whole of Saariselkä. Pumped from an average depth of 20 metres underground, the ground water requires no treat-

ment before drinking. At Saariselkä, water consumption amounts to an average 100 litres per resident per day. Saariselkä’s waste water is led via a pipe to Ivalo, which lies 40 kilometres away. There it is treated, and when leaving the purification plant it is completely clean. Saariselkä’s water maintenance is handled by Inarin Lapin Vesi Oy.

The park’s specialty is a long and exciting adventure course which includes different kinds of active tasks. There’s climbing, balancing over a gulley, a cable car, and much more. Restaurant Huippu’s hit is the crowberry cake

A cake made from unripened cheese and crowberries (also called kaarnikka in Lapland) is attracting so many clients to the Huippu restaurant in Kaunispää that you could call the cake a hit. The exact recipe is a secret but the chef de cuisine Jorma Lehtinen reveals that the cake’s filling has been curdled from cold-pressed crowberry juice. The cake built on top of cookies made in Finland is crowned by a crowberry glaze. The restaurant offers other berry pastries as well: cloudberry-quark pie and blueberry-raspberry pie. And of course Huippu’s worldfamous donuts. You can also enjoy glutenfree cloudberry muffin and bread at Huippu. In February, you can taste shrove buns with generous fillings. All Huippu’s pastries are made on site from the start and they are offered fresh every day. Huippu’s ”kurniekka” is a fish pie developed from the traditional Skolt Sami dish, and it does not contain pork fat. Kurniekka is baked into oat dough and filled with whitefish, salmon and cold-smoked salmon and

it is served heated with a butter patty. Huippu’s pastry cabinet includes stuffed sandwiches and mildly salted salmon sandwiches made from fresh salmon. The pizza slices are also made in Huippu’s own kitchen. Popular lunch dishes on winter days are salmon soup, sautéed reindeer, Inari’s arctic char and Huippu’s escalope, which is a beef fillet in cream sauce filled with smoked reindeer and Finnish squeaky cheese. Other soups and the generous salad buffet are also available at lunchtime. In the evening, Huippu is available on order, often hosting weddings and other family festivities. There are also different events during Kaamosjazz and Tunturiblues. The order restaurant has three open flame menus, five dinner menus and a buffet, but the menu can also be specially designed. Adjacent to Huippu, there is also Tuliaistupa, which is a gift shop for gifts and souvenirs, warm wool and fur products and gold from the Lemmenjoki River. The terrace opening in early spring has over a hundred seats for clients.

Saariselkä at Summertime – a Paradise for the Outdoor Person TAX FREE

Summer activities in Saariselkä focus strongly on the wilderness and nature of the region. Broad mountain areas and extensive woodlands provide the perfect setting for any kind of hiking. You can walk, run and ride a bicycle on these trails that seem neverending. Free flowing rivers and clear lakes are ideal for fishing and canoeing. Saariselkä is located between two wilderness zones: the Urho Kekkonen National Park and the Hammastunturi Wilderness Area. There is quite an extensive network of trails in the area, which makes Saariselkä a hiker’s paradise. A dense

network of desolate huts and reservable wilderness huts makes it easier to plan your routes, and there are plenty of marked trails for daytime hikers. If you don’t want to, or don’t know how to, go to the wilderness on your own, it is possible to go with a local guide. How about a guided Nordic walking, trail running or mountain biking tour? In Saariselkä it is possible to participate in other guided activities, such as canoeing, fishing, panning for gold or exploring the wilderness on horseback. Summer at Saariselkä traditionally includes suitable events for the outdoor person. In recent years,

Saariselkä MTB – mountain biking event, has become well-established amongst other summer events. The event is run so that each day’s waypoint takes the participants to different routes in Saariselkä Wilderness. In addition to racing drivers, there are separate competitions for athletes and juniors. Although Saariselkä has been traditionally thought of as a winter destination, the area has a lot to offer also at summertime. The surrounding nature provides a wide range of activities and everyone can explore the nature in a way that best suits them. You can walk, run, bike and paddle – you can go on a longer hike or a day trip – alone or with a guide.

Saariselkä has the best skiing conditions in Lapland Saariselkä achieved first place in a trial conducted last spring by two Finnish periodical magazines, where the ski track offerings of northern ski resorts was compared.

The ski resort trial was implemented last spring without the resorts’ knowledge. Attention was paid to the ski tracks’ structure and condition, ski track signage, safety, and services and up-front information intended for skiers. According to the trial results, Saariselkä’s strengths included well maintained and suitable ski tracks. In addition, the ski track widths were sufficient so that classic cross-country skiers and skaters can pass each other without trouble. In addition, road-crossings and bypass tunnels are safe in Saariselkä. The signage used in the ski track network also received praise in the trial due

to being clear and in good condition. Saariselkä was the only ski resort to receive the grade 9 for all points regarding ski

track structure and condition, ski track safety, and skier services. The testers were unable to find any negative qualities of Saariselkä.

Reindeer and game, always perfect quality Inarin Luonnonporo Oy is living busy times. Reindeer come and go. New reindeer round-ups all the time. But the smile on Mika Hindström’s face has not faded. ”During the seasons in this profession, you have to work long days,” says Mika Hindström from Inarin Luonnonporo Oy. Mika Hindström came to the north from south with his wife Nina Hindström. Mika has worked 26 years in the restaurant business. He has been a chef in most restaurants in Helsinki, e.g. Sasliki, Mamma Rosa and Kaivohuone. ”I wanted to do something else with my life than spend it in the rush hour traffic of Länsi-Väylä road. I had two options: go to Lapland or to the sea, to the archipelago. ” At first, Inarin Luonnonporo Oy was run by reindeer men. In 2009, Mika and Nina became partners in a meat processing firm. In spring 2010, the Culinari product brand was born.

”Inari is the largest municipality in Finland and its slogan is ”strong by nature”. Our products are also naturally strong and we avoid unnecessary additives. The majority of our products have been produced completely without E code additives. ”Last year was difficult. Culinari products ran out in the middle of the year. As an entrepreneur, I’m a little worried about the price development of reindeer meat. ” ”The raised price of reindeer meat seems incredible when considering the constant layoffs and downsizings in Finland. And then there is Russia as our neighbour, and due to their actions, the price of other meat types is getting lower. All this combined is a scary equation. • Tracks in the snow tell tales The winter is not, however, dead time in nature. Animal tracks, feeding places and droppings visible in the snow reveal the activities of the animals, with the acquisition of food often being the highlight of a winter day. The most familiar tracks in the snow are probably those left by a hare. Another set of very familiar tracks, called “crawler track marks” by the locals, is left by the willow grouse, a winter inhabitant of the area. The tracks of a willow grouse can often be seen crisscrossing from one birch tree to the next, as it searches for buds to feed on. The willow grouse is a habitat-specific bird species, and around the time the first snow falls, the bird’s plumage turns white. The tracks of a willow grouse are sometimes followed by the tracks of a fox, as the small predator has preyed on the dainty grouse. On some occasions, the preying pays off, and this can be detected by signs of a fight in the snow, with loose feathers around the spot. If you have sharp eyes, you may be able to find miniscule imprints left by small mammals. Moles and lemmings live under the snow cover, but they do make occasional visits to the surface of the snowdrift. These small rodents are preyed on by weasels and stoats. The weasel is the smallest beast of prey in the world.

• Reindeer “kiekerös”

The most often spotted species in the area is the reindeer. You can deduce the size of the animal in question based on the tracks it has left behind. These tracks are important for reindeer herders, even though they know, based on previous experience, the areas in which the main part of the reindeer herd will be at any given time of the year. In winter, lichens growing beneath the snow are the reindeer’s primary source of nutrition. Big holes dug in the snow, called kiekerös, are created by the reindeer digging for lichen.

• A bear’s life in winter

The bear, scrambling into its nest by October, shows no sign of life during the winter, but the bear sow does give birth in her nest in February or March. At birth, the cubs

weigh less than a kilogram. The sow suckles the cubs through the winter. Bear milk is extremely rich in nutrition and the cubs grow at a fast pace. Only when spring is well advanced do the sow and cubs leave the nest. There are several bear nests in the Urho Kekkonen National Park.

• Investigate in the winter season The ski tracks and snow shoe routes offer a great opportunity for enjoying the many details of winter nature. A Luxurious Restaurant in the Middle of Inari Jaana Kostiander and Lasse Hägglund have been running Hotel Inari together already for nine years. Hotel Inari’s restaurant Aurora gives us a splendid view of Lake Inari. There is also a pub area, which can be considered as a more relaxed part of the restaurant. Jaana Kostiander’s touch can be seen throughout the Hotel Inari’s interior decor. The decor is Scandinavian, balanced and elegant at the same time. Kostiander has also decorated each one of the hotel’s rooms by herself. - Like this I can’t blame anyone else but myself for the mistakes, says Kostiander modestly while presenting the elegant rooms. Hotel Inari also has rooms that are specially designed for spotting the northern lights. The rooms with balconies open onto a magical sky on the lake side. These rooms have a good view of the sky. Listen to the silence of early winter Ornithologists have noted that the most important sense for a bird enthusiast is hearing. But familiarizing oneself with the world of bird sounds opens a window into a much bigger world of experiences than you can imagine. Lapland is usually portrayed as a wonderland of visual experiences. The harmonious landscape, the curving horizon, the fainting blue of the sky, and water in its different forms are uplifting experiences for the mind. When you close your eyes, however, the landscape reveals a new, fascinating side to it. Somewhere a ski hits dry snow in the freezing weather, a tit sings, someone uses a hammer at a cabin by a lakeshore, the wind rustles the branches of a pine, your own heart beats, and farther from the lake you can hear the hollow sounds and rattling of the

ice cover as it extends deeper into the water.

Nature’s silence is full of sounds Nature’s silence rarely means a complete absence of sounds. Silence consists of delicate sounds caused by the wind, water, fire, animals and insects and the sounds people make when they move. A light breeze rustles the last rowan leaves, a campfire crackles and buzzes, the Siberian Jay meows, and your hiking partner’s boots creak softly against the surface of the snowy field when she carries more firewood for the campfire. Even a short stay in nature lowers blood pressure. Stress is relieved, heart beats get slower and white cell production increases. Anyone who likes to move in nature is aware of these healthy effects, at least on a subconscious level. Memories are also related to the soundscape. The scream of the Artic Loon brings to

my mind the warm pebbles on lakeshores, the armada of toy ships made from bark, the patter of the rain against the ceiling of the attic, the great joy and pain of first love, the rumble of the wings of a wood grouse, grandfather’s story sessions, and the rumbling of ice on a frozen night, those nights when the starry sky was deeper and brighter than ever with its colourful Northern Lights.

Familiar sounds bring comfort and make a wounded soul feel whole again.

Positive and negative sounds The world of sounds can give strong positive experiences. But the sounds can also be unpleasant – an electric saw singing for a long time in the middle of the wilderness, a jet plane flying low over a river canyon, or someone blasting

the radio in the yard of a wilderness cabin. In these cases, we could talk about negative rather than positive sounds. Negative sounds are often felt to not belong to the place where they are heard, and they are unexpected. They could be alarming sounds, which without exception are caused by humans, loud and disharmonious, breaking the beauty of the moment. Someone might also experience nature’s sounds as negative sounds. The loud screaming of a laughing gull colony may sound unbearable to some people but calming to others. The same goes for the rumbling of rugged rapids; it can feel downright scary, and sleeping next to rapids may seem impossible. The majority of nature’s sounds are positive, however – yearned for and fascinating.

Healthy effects

Even in elderly care, the importance of nature’s soundscape has been taken into account. Nature’s own

soundscape helps to maintain memory and brings positive images to people suffering from memory illnesses. Lapland also has centres for silence. Achieving inner silence can evoke deeply spiritual, ethical and religious experiences. The ritual of silence is also easy to do without special retreats. Even a short moment sitting by the campfire brings us closer to our origins, summoning up ancient feelings from within – feelings that our ancestors experienced thousands of years ago. Silence travel is often independent. It can be a slow canoe trip on a calm lake or traditional backpacking deep in the wilderness. The most important thing is to keep your sense of hearing alert and your mind open to the associations brought by sounds. It makes a trip to nature a trip to something larger than you. Vesa Luhta
