ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT 2021-22

FROM THE HEAD

What a tremendous blessing it is to lead this school. Time and time again I am reminded of the generosity of our parents, faculty, alumni, grandparents, trustees, volunteers, students and school friends. Whether cheering on our cross country team, applauding a musical event, volunteering for our cafeteria, library or Spirit Shop or contributing a donation to our fundraisers: your participation matters so much. Collectively we all lift each other up in the spirit of creating a foundational, inspiring education that will leave our world in a better place than we found it.

The 2021-2022 school year was one of change, hope, hard work and optimism. You will see so much good reflected in these pages. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the gifts you bestow upon us. St. Andrew’s is a better place because of you.

2021-22 BOARD OF TRUSTEES

St. Andrew’s Board of Trustees is entrusted with the great responsibility of operating the non-profit entity of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, an independent Episcopal school. Members of the Board serve staggered three-year terms and two-thirds of our members must be Episcopalian. The bylaws state that students here are to be instructed in the Christian religion according to the teachings of the Episcopal Church and that St. Andrew’s operate an accredited program.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is to provide an enriched academic program within a Christian environment emphasizing the fulfillment of each student’s potential.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

St. Andrew’s seeks students of character and intelligence from diverse ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The school strives to help young people achieve their potential not only in intellectual understanding but also in esthetic sensitivity, physical well-being, athletic prowess and moral decisiveness so that they may lead productive, responsible lives, not only for themselves, but also for their community.

DIVERSITY STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

“Grant, O God, that Your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart, that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace.”

St. Andrew’s sees diversity as an integral element of community and education, and a vital facet of our mission, core values, and Episcopal identity. We believe that community diversity manifests in many ways, including ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, family composition, and physical ability. In our commitment to attracting, fostering, and celebrating all aspects of diversity, St. Andrew’s aims to create an intentional environment of equity and inclusion.

We recognize that this work is constantly evolving as we address the changing needs of a diverse community and as we educate our students to engage with a diverse world. We believe that our strength and resilience as a community stem from our commitment to respect the dignity of every human being as a child of God.

CORE VALUES

Community Based on trust, traditions, communication, appreciation, and support Spiritual Foundation To develop moral behavior High Expectations Reflected in both the knowledge base and behavior of the faculty, staff, students, parents, and board members

Caring, Celebration and Humor Fostered by kindness and collegiality

STATEMENT OF NON-DISCRIMINATION

St. Andrew’s Episcopal School admits qualified students regardless of race, color, nationality, ethnicity, religion, physical disability, socioeconomic status, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, nationality, ethnicity, religion, physical disability, socioeconomic status, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation in the administration of any policies or programs generally accorded or made available to students at the school.

WHAT SAS MEANS TO ME

I have attended St. Andrew’s since second grade and think of the SAS community as an extension of my family. St. Andrew’s has introduced me to a diverse range of people, including my closest friends, and has allowed me to meet teachers and coaches who have had a significant and positive impact on me.

As an incoming second grade student, I remember feeling excited to be going to a new school. Not only were my surrounding classmates extremely welcoming and encouraging of a new face, but they inspired me to become a part of the SAS school spirit. As I have gone through my years with these classmates, I strive to bring that same energy for new students as well. St. Andrew’s loves to connect people of unique upbringings and culture together.

I have spent a lot of time getting to know my teachers and faculty at the different campuses, however, those relationships have never faded. I always adore getting to see past teachers at school events, and even getting to catch up after being apart. Even my current teachers will make the effort to come and support students at school events, forming some of my favorite moments at St. Andrew’s.

The St. Andrew’s environment fosters a community that welcomes everyone, regardless of background. This community understands that it is stronger when people can act as individuals and be accepting of others for who they are. In fact, the accepting atmosphere at SAS allows me to enjoy those who share differing opinions; we may think about things differently, but we encourage each other to discuss why we think that way. People are

not teaching me a lesson, but telling me how their own experiences and background inform their opinions. My experience at SAS has shown me that this is a great way to bridge differences.

My friends that attend other schools rely on cliques and fitting into narrow social groups to survive. I ask them why they remain in a corner just because they may be different? That only perpetuates division and misunderstanding. The accepting

SAS community has taught me to create the group atmosphere that I covet - a positive and fun dynamic with people who are generous and kind to one another. We accept our differences by supporting one another and as a result, we are stronger together because of them.

REMEMBERING LAUREN

“Let’s make our memorials the act of bringing her light, her kindness, her love into the world at every moment, at every place we can. Let's never miss an opportunity to love one another, to stand up to injustice, to show compassion. And while we're at it, let's take up Lauren’s cause of supporting young women, believing their life experiences, and working for equity for all. Every person here carries a piece of Lauren with them. Let’s honor Lauren by keeping her spirit in this world and keeping her kindness, compassion, and love as prevalent as we can.”

Rhodes community, participating in the Rhodes Singers and the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. She graduated summa cum laude and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

with the Silver Bowl Award at the NJCL Convention in recognition of her long-time dedication to the organization.

St. Andrew’s alum, teacher, advisor, and coach Lauren Alyssa Dill ‘04, age 35, of Austin, Texas passed away on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 surrounded by her family and loved ones. Lauren is survived by her husband, Joey Miller; her parents, Lawrence and Peggy Dill; and her four younger siblings Caroline, Chris, Taylor, and Ashley Dill; and numerous other relatives, godparents, and friends. A beloved wife, teacher, sister, and daughter, she will be missed by many.

Lauren was born April 6, 1986 in Tifton, Georgia. She attended St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Austin from elementary through high school and returned there as a Latin teacher in 2008.

Lauren was also an alumna of Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee where she studied Greek and Roman Studies/ Classics and where she met her husband, Joey. She was an active member of the

In her 13-year career as a teacher, Lauren touched the lives of many. She taught Latin and history at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. She was also a freshman advisor and dedicated her spare time to assisting with extracurricular activities including softball, the school musicals, and choir programs. Incredibly capable, Lauren saw every challenge as an opportunity and encouraged others to overcome their own challenges. Her deep passion for learning, ability to connect with her students, and respect for every person she came into contact with made her a remarkable educator and colleague. She will be remembered as a committed, compassionate teacher and mentor who cared deeply about the growth and wellbeing of her students.

From a young age, Lauren became involved and served in the National Junior Classical League (NJCL), a youth organization that encourages the study of the ancient world. Lauren won many accolades and continued her involvement post-high school by chaperoning events and encouraging others in their studies. Most recently, she was a member of the NJCL Certamen staff and held the State Chair position for Texas for the past five years. In the summer of 2021, she was recognized

At the request of Lauren’s parents, Larry and Peggy, who provided a generous seed donation, Head of School Melissa Grubb announced the establishment of the Lauren Dill Memorial Scholarship Fund on St. Andrew’s Day. The fund will support students in perpetuity and ensure that her legacy lives on at St. Andrew’s.

Lauren was a bright, dedicated individual who cared deeply for those around her. She was passionate about social justice and was a caring mentor and older sister. Lauren, always genuine and authentic, was a special person who created space without judgment for other people to be comfortable showing their true selves. Lauren cared so deeply for the students of our school, and her impact on St. Andrew’s and its community cannot be overstated. She is so loved, admired, and missed.

SENIOR CHALLENGE

Last spring, the Class of 2022 transitioned from students to SAS Alumni. We want to ensure they are able to connect with our wonderful St. Andrew’s alumni community.

There are three components of the Senior Challenge for the Class of ‘22 to complete:

Update their email addresses with the Alumni Relations Office . This allows the school to stay in touch about alumni events, faculty updates, and more.

Make a reunion pledge. Make a pledge to the St. Andrew’s Fund their senior year to fulfill in five years when they come back for their first reunion in 2027.

Register for True Blue. Our alumni network at truebluealumni.org is a great place to connect with fellow alumni. Members can share photos, post or accept mentorship opportunities, join regional groups, and more. This year’s senior class did an awesome job, with 80 members participating in at least one of the components, and pledging $1,730.44 . We look forward to seeing these alumni back on campus or at alumni events throughout the years to come!

CLASS OF ‘22 GRAD

It’s April of 2021, I’m covered in water, and I’m in the middle of the soccer field. As water balloons flew across the sky, and disco music blared into my ears, I looked around. Everyone was soaked, covered in glitter, and smiling with unadulterated childlike joy. We had been back on campus for months, but this day felt different. As we slid and danced with each other, it began to feel like we were officially back. Not only that but we were closer to one another than ever before. People whom I had never interacted with, or only seen on a screen, approached me to talk, or to dump a bucket of water on my head. While it may have looked, and smelled like a third grader’s birthday party, it felt like growth and maturity. We had made clear our eagerness to step up to the role of leadership that comes with being a senior. And boy, did we do it.

Step-Up Day was just the first of many occasions where our class proved that we were determined to bring this community back. Just like that little freshman boy, our grade took a challenge, and turned it into a stepping stone. And we did it again, and again, and again.

Each time we faced loss, or uncertainty, we stayed resilient and came out stronger. Whether we intended to be or not, each one of us became a leader.

We helped lead amazing theatrical performances. We hit the dance floor with Kenny Bourchesne. Our senior choir members didn’t let masks muffle their voices and sung their way to countless awards. Our senior athletes led their teams through uncertain seasons, some even winning the SPC Championship.

In just a few months, we will go on to join new communities. As we engage in them, let’s remember what happened during our time here. Don’t be that careless student, don’t be that passionate person who hides behind a facade of themself.

You will find that many communities were not as well equipped as we were to handle the challenges we all faced. Many grew apart, not together. So it is our responsibility to continue our leadership. If we find that there are issues, things that need change, let’s speak out. Because, as we are repeatedly and painfully reminded, change will not happen unless action is taken.

We will all be faced, yet again, with the same two paths that I was once faced with. We must be vulnerable. If you were unable to hear clearly through the scattered screaming, the hymn “I Sing a Song of the Saints of God,” number 293, tells us to be patient, brave and true. None of which are traits that describe freshman Leo. But those values are key to personal fulfillment. So going

forward, we must be patient with ourselves, and those around us. We must be brave, follow our interests, and speak out when nobody else will. In doing those things, we will become the truest version of ourselves as we navigate this increasingly chaotic world.

Seniors, thank you for showing me what it feels like to be in a place where my peers encourage each other to be themselves. If you encounter someone in your journeys ahead, who is new, scared, and confused like I was four years ago; Show them what it is to be true. And God helping, they can be one too.

Thank you.

Leo Vernor

WHY I GIVE

My list of passions is long—my family, my friends, traveling, college football (Go Vols!), music (Rihanna all day).... the list goes on. A contender for the top of the list is St. Andrew’s. My passion for the school began when I moved to Austin in 2012 to work in the College Counseling Office and continues to this day. In that first year, I quickly learned that our community is filled with people working toward the common goal of helping our students reach their highest potential. Each day, I get to witness the unique experiences, specialized opportunities, and the strong support systems we have in place for our students.

In my role as a college counselor, I am afforded the opportunity to witness the growth beginning in the 9th grade as students embark on their journey of discovery and exploration of college options. By the time they are having one-on-one meetings with us, students most

often say that no matter where they go to college, they would like some aspects of their college life to feel like St. Andrew’s. Whether it is the ability to connect with teachers, small class sizes, access to student support, or a welcoming environment, it is all because they have attributed these things to their success as a high school student.

As a member of the St. Andrew’s faculty, I have experienced firsthand the impact of philanthropic support on our community. These gifts have allowed me to grow as an educator and as a person. I have been able to bring projects to life and have been encouraged by our creative, curious, and innovative community. That is also why I believe in supporting the school through my own contributions. My hope is our continued support will help foster teaching and learning for the students of today and in the future.

St. Andrew’s is more than just a place of employment for me. It’s a community I believe in, a place that is adaptive, nurturing and responsive to the needs of all. It has been a pleasure to work with passionate educators and young adults who motivate each other every day. On behalf of all of my colleagues, thank you for your profound generosity and for helping St. Andrew’s provide the best experience for every student.
