from the head Dear St. Andrew’s Episcopal School Families, The pages that follow feature members of our SAS community expressing their gratitude for your generous support in 2020-2021 in ways that continue to sustain and promote the mission of SAS. The reality is that we simply cannot thank you enough, but we hope these efforts here give you at least a window into the depth of our gratitude. Nothing at St. Andrew’s is possible without you! As Interim Head of School, I feel uniquely poised to share and celebrate alongside you this year the outward and visible signs of the blessings infused throughout the school community as a result of your gifts to SAS of not only financial support, but also your willingness to volunteer your time, share the good experiences your children have had with others in the broader community, and your participation in the life of this wonderful school community despite a global pandemic. I am both impressed and grateful to the faculty and staff, parents, students, and Board of Trustees for safely navigating St. Andrew’s during COVID. Cooperation, sacrifice, and trust were required of all to successfully and repeatedly adapt while continually evaluating best pathways forward. The resilience of all is clearly evident, and the renewed appreciation we have for the blessing of being together is heartening and propels us with gratitude into the future. I have observed first hand the commendable character and desire to learn in our students, the passion and expertise the faculty and staff exude as they deliver our mission with excellence in keeping with our Core Values and Episcopal Identity, and the commitment of the Board of Trustees to steward and guide the school into the best possible version of its future for not only today, but also for generations to come. The St. Andrew’s Core Values of community, spiritual formation, high expectations, caring, celebration and humor are foundational and

requisite for the rest of our work to support the development of scholars, artists, athletes, and servants of the highest caliber. These values are not merely aspirational but are tangible in the daily experience of all who learn, teach, and work here. As newcomers, my husband Tom and I have felt warmly welcomed into this family. While words like “warm”, and “welcoming” were used to describe St. Andrew’s to us prior to our arrival, we can now confidently assure you that they are more than words; they are St. Andrews, and you are the reason for that. Thank you for partnering with us in educating your children. Please know how deeply grateful we are for all you do to make a St. Andrew’s Episcopal School education possible. Sincerely,
Melissa Grubb Interim Head of School St. Andrew’s Episcopal School

Dear St. Andrew’s Community, As I reflect on the unprecedented 2020-21 school year, I am profoundly grateful for all that we were able to accomplish together, despite the many challenges and uncertainties that we faced. The resiliency of our St. Andrew’s family, and the acts both big and small of compassion, grace and fortitude, have made us stronger and will have an impact on all of us for years to come. The St. Andrew’s Board of Trustees was committed to supporting the faculty and staff as they worked tirelessly to create a joyous, safe and inclusive environment where students could continue to learn, flourish and grow during this time and we are incredibly grateful for all that they were able to accomplish. As supporters of St. Andrew’s School, you share equally in these accomplishments, because we could not have achieved so much without the generosity of our community. We had over 1,000 donors to St. Andrew’s during the 2020-21 school year, each of whom made a measurable difference. Our Episcopal Identity shines brighter than ever as we look toward our future and the enthusiasm - and optimism - for what lies ahead is palpable. Thank you for your partnership in our mission of helping fulfill each student’s potential. Gratefully, Jason Near Chair, St. Andrew’s Board of Trustees Parent to Jake ’25 and Chase ‘27

life in a treehouse
M A R I A
Wow! 2020-21 was a year like no other, and the administration, faculty, and staff came together in the most creative ways to offer a school year that was as close to “normal” as possible during a pandemic. The administration, faculty, and staff spent endless hours in the summer planning what the school year would look like. They knew that the only way we could allow the students back on campus was to create smaller learning pods, utilizing all of the vertical teachers, and all of the spaces on campus. A full-time PE teacher at St. Andrew’s for 28 years, I was asked to take on a new responsibility: pod facilitator. All new pod facilitators were moved into classrooms with seven to nine students during the day. This was a big undertaking for all of us, but we were up for the challenge! The first month of school we prepared for this move to on-campus learning, and after a month of Zoom learning, we were ready to make the transition to being on campus part-time. It was a greatly anticipated day in late September: students, a little nervous but excited as they stepped out of their cars to see classmates and teachers in person after such a long hiatus. Even though they did not get to mix with other pods, the students quickly embraced (figuratively!) their podmates and shared stories about their experiences since March when they had last seen each other. I was assigned to a 4th grade pod of eight students. My pod’s classroom was clear across campus from the other 4th grade pods, as we were utilizing every space possible to accommodate a total of 34 on-campus pods in the LS. Despite being far away, there was something special about having our own place to call home. We named our classroom “The Treehouse” and began settling into a routine on the second floor of Nazro Hall.
B R U M M E R
Since we were with our pod for the duration of the school day, homeroom teachers spent their evening hours creating their lessons, and pod facilitators spent many early mornings reviewing the lessons before school started. The six of us in the 4th grade also met every Wednesday, and often texted each other throughout the school day to make sure we were all on the same page. I also relied on the students to help me create a daily routine, and to help each other when technical or curricular questions came up, and the students did not disappoint! They jumped at any chance to help another student with schoolwork or iPad issues. They shared with me what previous homeroom teachers did in their classroom to create a learning environment. They were always eager to help, and as a result we rarely had to stop what we were doing. We began building our little pod community. We decorated a pool noodle as our pod mascot, named “Six Foot Sam”. We used him to add some fun when measuring our six-foot distance during lunch and snack. We listened to songs like “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers, and “Positivity” by Stevie Wonder. We had a clock that replaced all the numbers with “now” to represent that we were always living in the moment, not worried about what change might be coming next. And we talked about resilience and referred to the quote by Charles Darwin, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, not the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change”. As all this was going on, the administration continued to look for ways to get the students back together. In November, my pod transitioned to the 4th grade wing, and in a mere week, my pod had gone from half-day to full-day school, moved from our “treehouse” to the music room, and then finally into Mrs. Hunt’s classroom. We had new protocols to learn in each different part of campus, and I was amazed that students embraced each change, excited to be closer to their fellow classmates.
St. Andrew’s Episcopal School | 7
But the administration was not done yet. They immediately released me to teach PE. Other shifts were also being made across the specials; Spanish, Art, Music, and Drama, which had been done asynchronously over Zoom since August, were all being brought back into the classroom. Changes were happening quickly, but everyone was on board, and students were benefiting greatly from these changes. As for me, since January, I have been teaching 3rd-5th PE in the mornings and have moved into
a 1st grade pod in the afternoon. The homeroom teachers, this time in 1st grade, welcomed me and offered help whenever I asked. It was a year of transitions, but what made this school year so successful was the collaboration of everyone on staff - administrators, nurses, faculty, maintenance, added teachers for classroom support and at-home learning students… and of course the students, who came this year not knowing what to expect, but resilient and eager to be a part of our St. Andrew's beloved community.

warm smile, open arms K R I S T I N
St. Andrew’s is more than a school. It is a family and a second home. I came to St. Andrew’s from the International School of Prague, and I was nothing short of terrified. I had watched a million movies from Grease to Mean Girls where all I saw was how mean American high schoolers could be. But the second I stepped foot on St. Andrew’s campus, I was pleasantly surprised and relieved when I was welcomed into every aspect of the school with warm smiles and open arms. When I first visited St. Andrew’s, I watched their performance of Les Miserables. Aside from witnessing a musical that was far beyond anything I had ever seen a high school capable of creating, I also got to hear one of the students, Ethan Rogers ‘17, talk about his experience as both the football captain and one of the leads in the musical. I was amazed at how one student could do so much and still keep up with school. However, within the first week of being a student at St. Andrew’s I realized that Ethan was not the exception, but the expectation. St. Andrew’s supports and encourages its students to partake in a wide variety of activities, leading to new valuable experiences and personal growth. My freshman year, my comfort zone was being in choir and the musical, but I was encouraged to join a sport, so hesitantly I joined the swim team. I had never been a competitive swimmer before… and it was not pretty, but I was supported by my teammates and coaches no matter how many belly flops I did, so I kept going. By my senior year I had become captain of the swim team and also got to keep getting joy from performing in the musical. St. Andrew’s has an incomparable tight knit community. From late night rehearsals drinking tea to save our throats to sitting in a hotel's laundry room with the entire swim team eating Olive Garden the night before SPC, I got to experience two amazing families through the swim team and musical. These close bonds are

clear among the students, but also includes the faculty. St. Andrew’s teachers will always have their doors open to help with anything, life advice, a topic you just can’t wrap your head around, or simply a joke on a bad day. The faculty will push you to be your best self both inside and out of the classroom, but will also make sure you always have a friend in them. The best part is that St. Andrew’s will be with you for the rest of your life. This has become very clear to me recently. My advisory has set dates for us to have lunch and catch up after graduation. Teachers are still there to help, no matter what you need. I committed to swim in college and I was relieved to know that another St. Andrew’s alumni swims there so I know I already have one friend going in. St. Andrew’s will welcome you in with a warm smile and open arms, and never let you go. Kristin Fowler ‘21

committed to safety D R .
Almost as soon as COVID-19 started gaining publicity in America, St. Andrew's began preparing for the unknown. While at first, the duration of the "new normal" was hard to gauge, it was clear that St. Andrew's needed a group of thoughtful experts to help guide the decisions being made around returning to campus, and what it would look like once students and teachers were actually here. We're so grateful to Dr. Liz Jacobs, who served on the COVID Parent Task Force, and asked a few questions about her experience during the 202021 school year. We helped recommend policies for when there should be home learning, when it was safe to come back to the school, and under what conditions, such as in pods, using masks, and use of surface cleaning, and when and how it would be safe for kids to participate in sports. We discussed the use of testing to keep our community safe and what was the protocol if a student, teacher, or staff member tested positive. full of hope "What a year. I can't believe you moved here with your family during the pandemic. How are you managing that?" "I'm so sorry this has been your introduction to St. Andrew's. We are usually such a fun and connected community." "Just wait until we get back to normal. You'll see what St. Andrew's is really like." These sympathetic and somewhat apologetic comments were a kind of refrain during my first year at St. Andrew's. My wife Audrey and I heard them often and in many contexts since joining the school in June of 2020 when I assumed the Head of Upper School role, and we became parents of a rising 1st and 4th- grader at the SAS Lower School. I heard it over Zoom during 1:1 parent meetings, at lunch with veteran teachers at the Upper School, from the lacrosse dads after practice, or when making small talk with the trustees before a meeting. We heard them between bites of crudité at the Kindergarten parent social, at 3rd-grade birthday parties, and WAYA soccer games. Parents and students sent scores of supportive emails wishing us luck as we managed the challenge of keeping school when all the rules seemed to be in flux. I welcomed the sympathy and well wishes and understand these comments as gestures of welcome and support. But out of politeness or because there isn't enough time to get into it, I rarely said what I wished to say, which is that I feel lucky and grateful to have experienced the challenge of this past year at and with St. Andrew's. The truth is, the pandemic year turned out to be an excellent time to join St. Andrew's. Challenging? For sure. Filled with opportunity? Yes. It has been a crash course in figuring out the strengths of and potentials for St. Andrew's. Often during this year, I've recalled my middle school ice hockey coach who was fond of repeating the oft-quoted line from novelist James
B E N
C O U R C H E S N E
Lane Allen, "Adversity doesn't build character; it reveals it." The pandemic year revealed the strength of our four-pillar model: the resilience of our performers who delivered two outstanding musicals, the toughness of our athletes who played through shifting rules and uncertain schedules, the adaptability of our students who experimented with multiple ways of learning, and the generosity of our community who continues to lead and serve with their time, talent, and treasure. You never really understand a community until times of turbulence. In that respect, the pandemic year was an ideal time to be new, to observe, and to learn what makes St. Andrew's special. This past year was by no means a "lost" year for our school, and when we are dealing with educating our youth, nurturing their growth, and launching them as capable young adults into our society, we can't afford for any year to be. The benefactors of St. Andrew's clearly understand that, as exemplified in these pages. I want to take this opportunity to say what I wish I had the time to say whenever I hear the sympathetic refrain about having joined St. Andrew's during the pandemic, which is: Thank you for inviting me into this worthy project and for your ongoing partnership on behalf of our students. The future is bright at St. Andrew's because our community is strong and because of supporters like you. Be sturdy and full of hope, Ben Courchesne Head of Upper School Parent to Ronan '30 and Elle '33

make haste to be kind O L I V E R
C H A P I N - E I S E R L O H
Mother Whitney concluded every chapel service with a quote: “Life is short. We don't have much time to gladden the hearts of those who walk this way with us. So, be swift to love and make haste to be kind.” — Henri-Frédéric Amiel This quote stuck with me long after I graduated and continues to guide me. I think that it also captures well the transient nature of the amazing experiences that we are so lucky to have at St. Andrew’s Ever since I first stepped though the front door of the 31st St. campus back in 2006, St. Andrew's played an important part in the lives of myself and my family. My sister and I were lucky enough to be lifers. When I think back on the twelve years I spent at St. Andrew’s, I have so many fond memories; numerous St. Andrew’s Days, the eighth-grade trip to New York, my junior experience trip to Italy, and Ms. Russell’s class all stand out. However, there was one constant that remained ever-present, and that is chapel. Every day for twelve years, I sat for 30 minutes a day in the chapel with my classmates. Often, it served as nice escape from the August heat of central Texas or a chance to relax in the middle of a packed day. But it was also so much more than that. I remember being engaged in my early years by Father Gerhardt directing live action performances of bible stories, or Father Deleery’s many stories of his time as a priest. Later on, I enjoyed hearing Ms. Brandon’s homilies as she imparted lessons on us. Of course, chapel was sometimes more than just a service. In high school, I remember being entertained by the senior homilies or musical offerings, engaged by the deep wisdoms and life lessons shared to us by Sean Murphy, and always greatly enjoyed Mother Whitney’s thoughtful and often humorous chapel talks.

Over my time at St. Andrew’s, chapel was a muchappreciated constant. In an everchanging world, those thirty minutes were a given time of peace and reflection that I grew to appreciate more and more as time passed. I learned many lessons, had many laughs, and enjoyed the rare opportunity to sit down with my entire grade in one place. To come together as a community once a day without fail. I miss that part of my daily routine. In my work now as student body president at Trinity University, I pull on many lessons and experiences I had in chapel to guide me. But the one that stand out is the importance of community and shared experience. As we return from what has been a rough school year during the COVID-19 pandemic, I have made it my work to revitalize our community though event planning and the creation of shared experience, much like what I experienced every day in chapel. St. Andrew’s Episcopal School | 37
a special place What would this year have been like without St. Andrew’s? We all know the importance that school plays in any family’s lives during an ordinary school year, but this year was far from ordinary. Each day of the 2020-21 school year made it increasingly clear how lucky we were and are to have St. Andrew’s be a part of our everyday life. While much of the world felt uncertain, our family took comfort in the incredible environment that St. Andrew’s fostered, allowing our children to learn, socialize, and develop. As parents, I’m sure we all felt the frustration of having social interactions be more limited for our kids, and St. Andrew’s played a vital role in creating a more “normal” experience. Even among the many great schools in Austin, St. Andrew’s stands out as a special place for the education it provides and so much more. The school’s focus on community and social and emotional learning fosters an incredible atmosphere and environment for our kids to be a part of. This is exemplified and modeled by everyone at SAS, showing that they truly “walk the talk” and demonstrate for our children all that is possible when a strong community like ours comes together. How much harder would this year have been without that consistent educational and social support for our kids? The efforts and sacrifices that so many made to provide our children with an experience that so closely resembled the preCOVID days were incredible. We thank everyone involved from the administration, the teachers, nurses, maintenance team, and staff whose efforts allowed our kids to have as normal of an experience as possible. We are forever grateful and want to let you know how lucky we feel to have you. We are all asked to give to so many worthwhile causes throughout the year. Especially now in

this time of extra need, our contributions are truly needed. We are proud to make St. Andrew’s a priority in our volunteer efforts and charitable giving because it has been the backbone of our children’s academic, social and emotional development. Thank you to all the parents and donors whose involvement in St. Andrew’s make it such a special place for our children. The Johls Brad, Cary '98, Avery '27, Payton '28, & Parker '31

Holy Spirit, Lord of love, come to our school today. Work with us and play with us and hear us when we pray. Show us how to follow Christ, in all we think and say and do. For he was once a child like us, and all our cares and joys he knew. Amen.
