Lord Kakkar opens the new Surgery Centre The Rt Hon Professor Lord Kakkar PC, a leading surgeon in the field of thromboembolic disease and cancerassociated thrombosis, opened the Surgery Centre at East Surrey Hospital.
I was delighted to be asked to open the new Centre and pleased to have the opportunity to see the new area and specialist facilities and to meet the team.
The Surgery Centre brings together expert surgical and specialist care for local people needing a wide range of day surgery and combines waiting and recovery areas and dedicated rooms for specialist pain and cystoscopy procedures. Space for the Centre was created as a result of some reconfiguration of existing rooms and provides a tailor-made space for day surgery patients during their short time at the hospital. Lord Kakkar said: “I was delighted to be asked to open the Centre and pleased to have the opportunity to see the area and specialist facilities and meet the team.
The Rt Hon Professor Lord Kakkar PC “I am delighted that Lord Kakkar kindly agreed to come and open the Surgery Centre.”
“It is good to see that patients living locally can get the treatment they need in a modern comfortable space designed for their needs that is close to home.”
It is anticipated that over 10,000 patients a year will be cared for by the Surgery Centre team, both as day cases and appointments.
Michael Wilson CBE, chief executive said: “The new facilities at the Centre means that our teams of doctors, nurses and therapists can provide specialist care for patients.

David and Kirsten take young patients to Disneyland David Barton, lead emergency practitioner and Kirsten McHale, clinical nurse specialist for paediatric epilepsy and neurodisability, children and young people, generously gave up their time last month to join the annual Magical Taxi Tour organised by the Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers for children with life threatening illnesses to provide support to the children and their families.
every year with the dedication and kindness of every single person that makes this trip possible, I feel truly fortunate to be part of such an amazing event, which allows children with lifelong conditions to quite literally live their dream. Planning for next year is already well under way.”
David said: “It is just amazing to be a part of this trip to Disneyland Paris, seeing the children (and the parents) have a weekend off from normal life, which is often spent in hospital, to just enjoy the magic of Disney. The charity have already committed to supporting five more families from SASH next year and I cannot wait.”
My thanks to David and Kirsten for giving their time and clinical skills to such a great cause and for showing that their compassion and care extends beyond their everyday work.
David and Kirsten joined five young SASH patients and their families to travel in Hackney cabs from SASH, in convoy with other cabs, to Disneyland Paris for three days of fun. Kirsten and David formed part of the clinical team on hand to care for the children throughout the journey and during their stay. Kirsten said: “I was delighted to part of the fantastic event again this year. I was lucky enough to be able to take another nurse to support us, so my thanks goes to Vicky Abbott for her support too. I am so overwhelmed

True dementia friends on their wards and made a difference to the people they care for.”
Insight finds out more about the work of our therapy rehabilitation assistants team in supporting patients with dementia…
Since May 2016 over 2,000 members of SASH staff, volunteers and board members from across the organisation have successfully completed the Alzheimer’s Society dementia Friends awareness sessions.
Our team of therapy support assistants; Luciana Condrat, Lucie Ward, MaryClare Salmon and Warren Filmer, work alongside the physiotherapists and occupational therapists on our orthopaedic, medical and care of the elderly wards.
At the sessions staff have had an opportunity to learn more about what it is like to live with dementia and how they can use this knowledge in the way they care for patients with dementia.
As a team, they have completed the dementia leads programme at SASH and embedded their learning into their practice. As dementia leads for their areas they continue to work to improve the hospital experience for patients with dementia.
The Dementia Friends sessions form part of the SASH dementia strategy which aims to make the organisation dementia friendly.
Together, they have created a range of reminiscence activities, including destination boards to use with patients living with dementia as part of their rehabilitation and preparation to leave hospital. The board content is changed monthly to reflect different themes that might be of interest to older people, for example; the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, celebrating the end of World War II and seasons of the year.
To find out more about becoming a Dementia Friend please contact, Chris O’Connor, nurse consultant for dementia and older people on chris.connor@sash.nhs.uk
The team also lead on other initiatives on their wards such as encouraging patients to dress in their own clothes and social dining. Early results from the social dining initiative, which sees patients join others to eat at the same table where there are also reminiscence items such older style magazine and food adverts have shown an increase in the amount of food eaten by the patients. Eva Dembinska, lead physiotherapist, said: “I am proud of everything that the team have achieved and I am especially impressed in how, without any prompting, they have taken on the role of dementia champions on their wards. By taking the lead for improving the experience of our patients with dementia patients they have inspired positive changes

Burstow Babies celebrate first birthday
they have given birth - some parents attend five or six times and we also offer support over the phone. On average we see nearly 60 women a month.
To celebrate their first birthday the Burstow Babies team invited parents past and present who have benefited from the support to a special party and get together over tea and cake.
“It is great to see how popular Burstow Babies has become - providing support and encouraging parents to build a friendship network of other new parents around them when infant feeding.”
The Burstow Babies group is held in the dining room on Burstow Ward where they provide infant feeding advice and support for parents.
New mum Maggie Doherty, from Crawley, who attended the birthday celebrations with her four week old baby Johnny Mulji, also thanked the team:
In their first year, the Burstow Babies team have helped 568 parents and their babies. Sam Rush, Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) project and infant feeding lead midwife, who, along with two infant feeding support workers runs Burstow Babies, said: “The Burstow Babies specialist feeding service is part of our baby friendly initiative and we are delighted how much we have been able to do so far.
“The success of Johnny’s weight gain is down to the support of the team with feeding. I wanted to breastfeed exclusively. I came into the hospital after a home birth and Burstow Babies was recommended to me Johnny weighed 10lbs 2oz at birth and now weighs 11lb 8oz.
“Any parent who experiences feeding difficulties when they go home with their baby simply needs to call and arrange an appointment to meet with the team.
“The team gave me practical and simple advice and this empowered me. It is also a great way to meet other mums.” Pictured above: The Burstow Babies team and birthday party guests

Children learn how to save a life
Thanking the Friends of East Surrey Hospital
Children of SASH staff came to East Surrey Hospital to take part in resuscitation training on European Restart a Heart Day (16 October). The Restart a Heart Campaign is an annual initiative which aims to train as many children and young people as possible in the UK to learn how to save a life and make every child a lifesaver by teaching vital life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills.
At the annual general meeting Richard Burford, chairman, Friends of East Surrey Hospital, recognised volunteers for their years of service.
Bernadette Lee, senior resuscitation officer said: “We invited staff to bring their children to work to learn CPR - there was a great turn out, 60 children and parents.
Richard said: “It was a great evening and we were pleased to be able to acknowledge some of our many volunteers for their years of service. We owe everything to our volunteers we would not be able to support or raise funds without them.
“The resuscitation team were there to assist and supervise while participants practiced CPR on training mannequins; they also practised the recovery position and what to do if somebody is choking.
Pictured above: Mavis Cliff, volunteer recognised for 25 years of service with Richard.
Saffron Webster, 17, from Hassocks who attended the event, said: “I really enjoyed the training, it is a really useful life skill and it has given me more confidence.”
