Compassion is one of the four core values of the Trust, as is our belief that the sharing of stories and experiences is one of the most valuable tools in forming a shared vision and understanding. This incredibly moving patient account (edited for confidentiality) so strongly demonstrates what we are doing and its impact on patient care that it deserves to be heard across the Trust. Please take the time to read this and share it with your colleagues. 'I would love to have a heart felt thank you passed on the 'Resus' team. On Sunday 23/8/15 I had a mountain bike accident that resulted in me breaking my back. I was looked after by the staff in the ED and so many others. What should have been the most frightening day of my life was so delicately handled, for both me and my family. I was in head blocks and immobile for 18 hours. While strapped down, I listened to the tireless and massive effort you all make. All evening you seemed not to give up on a terminal cancer patient. I listened to you try, try, try again and when all was lost, try again to keep her alive. I listened to the abuse and the threats from another patient at about 2am. With all that to deal with, each time I was met with big smiles, told not to worry and actually the nurses thanking ME for being patient. When it all got too much and I had a little cry, a member of staff ran over and wiped my eyes so my son didn't see I was scared too. I am in awe at your patience, tolerance, kindness. Your ability to push through frustration and wear a smile. Thank you for your care, and for teaching me that in hindsight, I've never had a bad day at work.'

Support for staff Did you know the Trust offers an extensive service of support to all employees in the form of an Employee Assistance Programme called CIC.

Health Roster MAPS is upgrading to ‘Health Roster’ What will it mean for you? The Trust is investing in improved staff planning tools which will improve the efficiency of our workforce and lead to safer delivery of care. As part of this there been a major investment in the upgrade of Health Roster, the implementation of patient-led acuity and dependency software and upgrades to our temporary staff bank. This will provide all existing users with a faster, easier to use system that staff can access from a home computer or Smartphone to view their roster and manage annual leave and shift requests and allow bank staff access to self-service booking facilities and automated timesheets. Safe Care is a new module in Health Roster that will help many wards to capture their patient acuity and dependency on a daily basis and help to plan staffing levels and skill mix to meet patient-led demand. The new system and a programme of education is being rolled-out during December and will include new and refresher training on all aspects of staff planning and utilisation. This is a major driver to support the Trust’s reduction in temporary staffing spend. To find out more or to book your place on a demonstration session on 7 January please contact Healthroster.upgrade@sash.nhs.uk
