WHAT IS VRATA (VOW) ? The word Vrata (Vows) is derived from the verb word “Vru” meaning to select. Therefore, the Vrata means the type of the selection for renunciation. ‘Vrata’ is approximately translated by the English word ‘Vow’. When one makes a resolution to restrain willfully from something with full understanding and faith then that resolution becomes a Vow. The scriptures have divided these vows into two main groups: Maha Vrats (Major Vows or Absolute Vows) Anu Vrats (Minor Vows or Relative Vows) Maha Vrats In these vows, non-violence, truthfulness, nonstealing, celibacy, and non-possessiveness are observed mentally, verbally, and physically in total. Each of these three aspects are further observed in three ways: not committing yourself, not asking anyone else to do so, and not encouraging anyone else to do so. Those who wish to observe these vows renounce their worldly lives and become known as sadhus (monks) and sadhvis (nuns) or Anagari. Anu Vrats It is difficult for house holders to fully practice the above vows, and so, the vows that house holders take have some limitations and are called minor vows. These vows are not as stringent as Maha vrats and people who that take these vows are called shravaks, shravikas, or Agari. Vrata depends on: Selection of the type of conduct to be practiced, Knowledge of what is the right conduct and what is the wrong conduct How much energy one can use and is capable of using for the right conduct. The hallmark of right conduct is right conviction in thought and action, freedom from infatuation or delusion and passions like anger, hatred etc. Therefore, Vrata is to retire from the wrong conduct like violence, non-truth, stealing, sensual pleasure and possessiveness and to get engaged in the true religious activities through the unity of body, mind and speech. We do not take Vrata to please any divine power or any one else. We take Vrata to purify ourselves to continue and enhance the process of liberating ourselves, and to achieve the liberation (Moksha). The five great vows (Maha-vratas) can be adopted by monks who are very keen about the uplift of
their souls and ready to sacrifice all worldly enjoyments and family ties. For those who want to remain in family life and for whom complete avoidance of five principle sins are difficult, Jain ethics specifies the following twelve vows to be carried out by the householder. Of this twelve vows, the first five are main vows of limited nature (Anuvratas). They are somewhat easier in comparison with great vows (Mahavratas). The great vows are for the monks. The next three vows are known as merit vows (Guna-vratas), so called because they enhance and purify the effect of the five main vows and raise their value manifold. It also governs the external conduct of an individual. The last four are called disciplinary vows (Shikhsa-vratas). They are intended to encourage the person in the performance of their religious duties. They reflect the purity of one’s heart. They govern one’s internal life and are expressed in a life that is marked by charity. They are preparatory to the discipline of an ascetic’s life. Three merit vows (Gunavrats) and four disciplinary vows Shikhsa-vratas) together are known as Seven vows of virtuous conduct (Shilas). A person may adopt these vows, according to his individual capacity and circumstances with the intent to adopt ultimately as a great vows. The layperson should be very careful while observing and following these limited vows. These vows being limited or restricted vows may still leave great scope for the commitment of sins and possession of property. The twelve vows are described as follows: Five Main Vows of Limited Nature (Anuvratas): • Non-violence Anuvrat – Ahimsa Anuvrat (Sthula Pranatipat Viraman) • Truthfulness Anuvrat – Satya Anuvrat (Sthula Mrisavada Viraman) • Non-stealing Anuvrat – Achaurya Anuvrat (Sthula Adattadana Viraman) • Chastity Anuvrat – Bhramacharya Anuvrat (Sthula Maithuna Viraman) • Non-attachment Anuvrat - Aparigraha Anuvrat (Sthula Parigraha Viraman) Three Merit Vows (Guna-vrats): • Dik Vrata – Limited area of activity vow • Bhoga-Upbhoga Vrata – Limited use of consumable & non-consumable items vow • Anartha-danda Vrata – Avoidance of purposeless sins vow
Four Disciplinary Vows (Siksha-vratas): • Samayik Vrata - Meditation vow of limited duration • Desavakasika Vrata - Activity vow of limiting space • Pausadha Vrata – Ascetic’s life Vow of limited duration • Atithi Samvibhaga Vrata – Limited charity vow In this vow, a person must not intentionally hurt any living being (plants, animals, humans etc.) or their feeling either by thought, word or deed, himself, or through others, or by approving such an act committed by somebody else. Intention in this case applies selfish motive, sheer pleasure an even avoidable He may use force, if necessary, in the defense of his society, family, life, property, religious His agricultural, industrial, occupational living activities also involve injury to life, but it should be as minimum as possible, through carefulness and due precaution. Four stages of violence are described: Premeditated Violence - to attack someone knowingly Defensive Violence - to commit intentional violence in defense of one’s own Vocational Violence – to incur violence in the execution of one’s means Common Violence - to commit violence in the performance of daily Premeditated violence is prohibited for all. ANU VRATS A householder is to incur violence defensively and vocationally provided maintains complete detachment. Common violence is accepted for, but even here, one should be careful in preparing food, house, etc. This explains the Jain’s practices of drinking water, vegetarianism, not eating meals at night, abstinence from alcohol. is the foundation of Jain ethics. Lord Mahavir says: “One should not injure, subjugate, enslave, torture or kill any living being including animals, insects, plants, and vegetables.”This is the essence of religion. It embraces the welfare of all It is the basis of all stages of knowledge and the source of all rules of conduct. The scriptures analyze the spiritual and practical aspects of nonviolence and discuss the subject negatively and positively. Satya Anuvrat - Truthfulness Anuvrat
The second of the five limited vows is Truth. It is more than abstaining from falsehood. It is seeing the world in its real form and adapting to that reality. The vow of truth puts a person in touch with his inner strength and inner capacities. In this vow, a person avoids lies, such as giving false evidence, denying the property of others entrusted to him, avoid cheating others etc. The vow is to be followed in thought, action, and speech, and by doing it himself or by getting it done through others. He should not speak the truth, if it harms others or hurts their feelings. He should, under these circumstances, keep silence. Asteya Anuvrat: Truthfulness Anuvrat In this vow, a person must not steal, rob, or misappropriate others goods and property. He also must not cheat and use illegal meansin acquiring worldly things, nor through others or by approving such an act committed by others. Chastity Bhramacharya Anuvrat: The basic intent of this vow is to conquer passion and to prevent the waste of energy. Positively stated, the vow is meant to impart the sense of serenity to the soul. In this vow, the house holder must not have a sensual relationship with anybody but one’s own lawfully wedded spouse. Even with one’s own spouse, excessive indulgence of all kinds of sensual pleasure need be avoided. Aparigraha Anuvrat: Non-possession / Nonattachment Non-possession is the fifth limited vow. As long as a person does not know the richness of joy and peace that comes from within, he tries to fill his empty and insecure existence with the clutter of material acquisitions. Lord Mahavir said, security born of material things is a delusion. To remove this delusion, one takes the vow of non-possession and realizes the perfection of the soul. One must impose a limit on one’s needs, acquisitions, and possessions such as land, real estate, goods, other valuables, animals, money, and etc.The surplus should be used for the common good. One must also limit the everyday usage of number of food items, or articles and their quantity. This Jain principle of limited possession for householders helps in equitable distribution of wealth, comforts, etc., in the society. Thus Jainism helps in establishing socialism, economic stability, and welfare in the world. Non-possession, like non-violence, affirms the oneness of all life and is beneficial to an individual in his spiritual growth and to the society for the redistribution of wealth. ….CONT IN NEXT ISSUE

Once you are satisfied, allow the paint to dry for at least 30 minutes before wrapping the candle. These candles look lovely wrapped in clear plastic cellophane wrap, tied up with festive ribbon. THE SALMAN KHAN INTERVIEW
studio chair, parks himself on it, and turns to
You can tell a lot about a megastar by the way he throws his punch. A Hindi film hero might routinely fell over seven with one blow, but each has their own approach. Aamir Khan, all bloodshot eyes and biceps rippling with the fury of thousands of killed wives to avenge, brings both physical intensity and a sense of inescapable irony to the picture. Shah Rukh Khan, his every sinew straining with gargantuan effort, bellows like a wounded animal as he metamorphoses from charming lover to crazied aggressor. Salman Khan doesn’t bother breaking a sweat or even trying for realism as he buffets his opponents, effort be damned, smirk and quip steadily in place. The ubiquitous one-liner just underlines how one-sided the battle always is. Because Salman Khan is larger than life. And he believes it. As do we, clearly. Earlier this year in Dabanng, Salman’s shirt tears itself off his enraged body, as if anger – and the need to show off his bare chest – are reason enough for him to suddenly turn into the Incredible Hulk. Coming at the film’s climax, the moment is dated and ludicrous beyond belief. Eternal romantic Shah Rukh would have been laughed out of theatres for trying to do the same. Aamir would have had to write a longish blogpost explaining how the scene was all a metaphor, or, somehow, Meta. Salman earned whistles, his film becoming one of the most successful in the history of Indian cinema. In Mumbai’s Mehboob Studio, two days before that epic release, Khan sniffles his way past a ravenous pack of news-channel cameras. In no mood for niceties, he struts, chest out, upto a
them. In a brutal show of strength and savvy, he preempts the questions they want to ask him, throwing out monosyllabic answers to each. “Aur kucch?” The reporters, used to standard-issue questionnaires, are flummoxed and bereft of fresh queries, and Khan is pleased as punch. He relaxes, blows his nose into a big kerchief, and swaggers out. All in less than five minutes. He sneezes just as I walk up, clearly not in the mood but nevertheless resigned to a conversation. At this minute, eyes visibly watery, nose nearly crimson, Salman looks anything but invincible. He warily grunts through the first few questions until I ask, young man to forever-swaggering man, where on earth he meets women. “You can’t be serious,” he laughs, tired eyes instantly twinkling. Oh, but I am; he’s dated Somy Ali, Aishwarya Rai and Katrina Kaif. Is there a clandestine bar where the world’s most women

turn up? “Ha, I wish. There isn’t a bar, dude. Otherwise we’d all go every night. I’ve… worked with them, I’ve known them. I have been fortunate with the kind of women I’ve… met. They’ve all been very nice. I’m sure you’re talking about the way they look and everything, but I mean the kind of people they are, their personalities. I’ve known them for the longest time. And as far as people, they’ve all been really beautiful.” He takes in a moment to smile. “And really loving, and really caring. Yeah, I’ve been lucky.” Luck aside, Khan at 45 is the only single man among the industry’s megastars. “You’re single till the time you aren’t married, dude,” he interrupts instantly. I agree, wholeheartedly, but my question is how a man that powerful can
