JAY-HO!
THE ONLY FEMALE TIRTHANKAR OF JAINISM Mallinath ("Lord Jasmine") was the nineteenth Tīrthaṅka ra "Ford-Maker" of the present avasarpi ṇī age in Jainism. According to Jain beliefs, Mallinath became a siddha - a liberated soul which has destroyed all of its karma. Śvētāmba ra Jain beliefs hold that Mallinath was female, making her the only woman to become a Tirthankara in the present age. According to the original tradition of jains i.e.Digambara beliefs, Mallinath was male and one can attain moksha or be born as tirthankar only as male. Jain scriptures indicate Mallinath was born at Mithila into the Ikshvaku dynasty to King Kumbha Raja and Queen Prabhavati Rani. PREVIOUS LIVES In the Aparvideh area there was a city named Vitshoka. It was ruled by a powerful king Mahabal. He was very intimate with six other kings who were his childhood friends. Influenced by discourses of ascetics, king Mahabal decided to follow the spiritual path. he sought opinion of his six childhood friends with the remark, "I want to became an ascetic, do you also?" All the six friends replied, "We have been together during both good and bad times. When we have been together during both good and bad times. When we have enjoyed the mundane life in company, it would be shameful if we part company on the spiritual path. We shall become ascetics together and we shall do all spiritual practices together." The seven kings took Diksha from Varadharma Muni and started the spiritual practices earnestly. Mahabala was bitten by the bug of ego. He thought, "I have always been ahead of my friends. Now, if I do the same practices I will remain at the same level. As such I should do a little more and be ahead as before." With this feeling, Mahabala started secretly doing more practices than the others. All the seven friends would
formally take vow of some specific penance together but when on conclusion, other friends broke their fast, Mahabala would continue his fast on some pretext. The desire to be above the ordinary inspired this competition. As a result of this deception Mahabala fell from the lofty spiritual level he had attained due to his intense practices and acquired the Karma that would result in being born as a woman (striveda). However, as he still maintained the purity and intensity in his practices he later also earned the Tirthankara-nam-and-gotra-karma. All the seven ascetics breathed their last after sixty days fast and mediation. They reincarnated as gods in the Anuttara dimension. SVETAMBARA ACCOUNTS BIRTH OF MALLI KUMARI The being that was Mahabal, leaving the abode of gods, descended into the womb of Queen Prabhavati, wife of King Kumbha of Mithila. During the third month of pregnancy the queen had a desire to sleep on a bed made up of fragrant flowers of five colors and to smell a bouquet of flowers (Malladam) all the time. It is said that if a pious soul resides in the womb all the desires are fulfilled. On the eleventh day of the bright half of the month of Margshirsh the Queen gave birth to a pious and beautiful girl. It was unprecedented that a Tirthankar be born as a girl; everyone was surprised. But even the almighty is helpless when the Karmas precipitate into action. The mother’s craving for flower bouquet inspired the king to name the girl as Malli Kumari. She was very fond of having a bouquet of flowers. Florists from far and near used to bring attractive and beautiful bouquets to present her and get desired gifts in return. Strange yarns about her infatuation for flowers and bouquets spread all around. DIVINE EARRINGS Once a famous and rich merchant, Arhannak, of Champa town, went on a sea voyage with some other people. After earning heaps of wealth when he was returning, a god appeared. In order to test Arhannak’s devotion for his religion, the god created a variety of afflictions. Even in the face of death Arhannak did not yield. His devotion for the path shown by Jina was absolutely unwavering. The god was pleased with this unrelenting determination of Arhannak. He gave the merchant a pair of divine earrings as gift.
On the way back the ship stopped at Mithila. All the merchants went to King Kumbh’s assembly with gifts. Arhannak gifted the divine earnings for Malli Kumari. The king and his ministers became astonished at the divine beauty of these earrings. Once a joint in these earrings broke. King Kumbh called expert goldsmiths to weld this joint but none of the artisans had skill enough to do its work. In annoyance the king exiled many of these artisans. Wherever these artisans went they talked of the divine beauty of Malli Kumari. IGNORANT ARTIST Once Mallidinna, the younger brother of Malli Kumari, constructed an entertainment room in the palace premises. One of the working artists was highly talented. This artist had a glimpse of a toe of Malli Kumari who was standing behind a lattice. This enabled the highly gifted artist to paint a fresco of the princess on a wall of the room. he was under the impression that the prince would be pleased to look at he exact replica of his sister and richly reward him. When the room was complete, the prince came with his wives to look at and approve the beautiful paintings, some of which were erotic as well. While he was enjoying these works of art, he came across the painting of Malli Kumari. He could not believe what he saw. Ashamed of himself he said, "My elder sister is here and I am shamelessly enjoying these sensual paintings along with my wives." His governess explained, "Prince, You are mistaken. this is not your sister but her life size portrait." The prince carefully examined the painting and was astonished at the realistic work of art and the skill of the artist. However the feeling of anger overtook the sense of appreciation. He was annoyed at the mindless effrontery of the artist who had painted such a live portrait of his respected elder sister in the entertainment chamber. The angry prince called the painter and asked him when and how he saw the princess. The artist humbly submitted, "Sire! I just saw one toe of the princess from behind a lattice. But I am endowed with this miraculous skill that when I start painting even a part of a thing I automatically complete the thing perfectly." This explanation did not pacify the prince. He exiled the artist after amputating his right thumb. The vexed artist made another painting of the princess and sold it at a very high price to king Adinshatru of Hastinapur.
Adinshatru was attracted towards Malli Kumari, as many others who had heard about her divine beauty. DISCUSSION WITH CHOKSHA One day a female mendicant named Choksha came to Mithila. In order to influence the royal family she came to Malli Kumari. Choksha was a scholar of Vedas and other scriptures and her interpretation was that keeping the body clean, indulging in charity and the anointment of Tirth (sacred place)were the only religious activities that lead to liberation. She started preaching her ideas to Malli Kumari, who heard all this with patience. When Choksha had nothing more to say, Malli Kumari said in her magnetic voice, "With due respect to your attire, I am surprised at your ignorance, Choksha. Know that every charity is not done with religious or pious intent. Even cleaning the body and anointment of a Tirth are not sacred if they are not done with equanimous and pious feelings or if they cause any destruction of any living organism. A blood stained cloth will never be cleaned by washing it with blood. The basis of religion is a discerning attitude. To an irrational person, even penance causes discomfort and irritation." This irrefutable logic of Malli Kumari silenced Choksha, but she became angry and decided to take revenge. Choksha decided that, in order to shatter the pride of this princess it would be best if she could be manipulated into marrying some king who already had many wives. Cooking up her plan, she approached the king of Kampilyapur in Panchal state. She gave a titillating description of the divine beauty of Malli Kumari and provokingly said to the king, "Your life and palace both are lack luster as long as you do not marry and bring this divine beauty to your palace." King Jitshatru was highly impressed. He decided to seek the hand of Malli Kumari in marriage. CHANGE OF HEART OF THE SIX KINGS The six friends of Malli Kumari’s earlier birth were born in six different royal families and inherited the kingdoms. They were: King Pratibuddha of Saketpur King Chandrachhay of Champa
King Rupi of Shravasti King Shankh of Varanasi King Adinshatru of Hastinapur King Jitshatru of Panchal (Kampilyapur) The fame of the beauty of Malli Kumari inspired all these six kings to send proposing kings and returned the emissaries. These kings felt insulted and marched on Mithila with their armies and lay a seize. When king Kumbh got the challenge he became worried. Malli Kumari asked about the cause of her father's anxiety. Kumbh replied, "Daughter! All these kings want to marry you. My refusal has irked them and they have surrounded Mithila. I am anxious about what I should do now!" Malli Kumari was already aware of all these activities due to her Avadhi gnan (the capacity to know all about the physical world). She made a plan to enlighten these friends of her last birth. In the palace garden she got a chamber made and in its center installed a life size statue that was her exact replica. Its inside was hollow and there was an opening hidden under the neck. Six adjacent chambers were also erected around this central circular chamber. These six chambers had windows opening in the main chamber. These windows were so designed that a n onlooker could only see the statue and nothing else. Making all these arrangements, Malli Kumari started putting one handful of the food she ate every day inside the hollow statue. When the stink of decomposed food, coming out of the statue on opening the lid became intolerable, Malli Kumari went to her father. She said to her father, "Stop worrying, father, and inform the kings individually that I want to meet them to discuss about marriage." The king did likewise. Believing that only he had been invited, everyone of the kings accepted the invitation. At the predetermined time they all came one by one and were led to the six chambers allotted for them separately. From the windows in their chambers each one of them gazed at the divinely beautiful statue considering it to be Mali Kumari. Everyone was dreaming of the marriage and the happy moments thereafter. All of a sudden Malli Kumari removed the concealed cover from the hole in the neck of he statue. The obnoxious smell of decomposed food filled the chambers. The hellish smell hit the peeping kings and they were jolted out of their state of day dreaming. Their faces distorted with revulsion.
Panic stricken, the kings shouted, "What is all this? Why have I been locked in this chamber? It is impossible breath here. Please open the doors." It was then that Malli Kumari appeared and said, "O slaves of passions! You are totally infatuated with female beauty. A moment ago you were admiring this earthly beauty and were nurturing a desire to possess and enjoy it. Now a hatred for the same is evident on your distorted faces. What sort of love for beauty is this?" The kings shouted, "Why are you trying to make fools of us? It is impossible to tolerate this stink!" Malli Kumari asked the attendants to open the gates of the chambers. All the six kings rushed out and were surprised to see each other. Finding the right opportunity Malli Kumari said to them, "The stink caused by just a few handfuls of food is intolerable. Mind you, this body is nothing but a statue made of bones and flesh and maintained by the same food. Why such infatuation for such decomposed thing? You are all friends of my last birth. Rise above this infatuation and commence once again the terminated pursuit of purification of the self." All the six kings acquired Jati-smaran Jnan, They sought pardon from king Kumbh as well as Malli Kumari. Resolving to follow the path of renunciation they left for their respective kingdoms. Malli Kumari also announced her decision to become an ascetic. After the great charity she became an ascetic along with three hundred males and equal number of females. Immediately after her Diksha, she acquired Vipulmati Manahparyav Jnan (the ultimate Pra normal capacity and started deep meditation. The same afternoon she attained omniscience. In her first discourse she discussed on the subject of philosophy of equanimity. The six kings took Diksha during this first discourse. After enhancing the spread of religion for a long period she attained Nirvana on the fourth day of the bright half of the month of Chaitra at Sammetshikhar.
GIVE ME AN EDUCATED MOTHER, I WILL GIVE YOU A GREAT NATION
Today’s girl child will be the mother of tomorrow. As a mother she can give her child a sound nursing and capable upbringing. A woman has the maximum impact on the social, economical decisions making in the family generally. At micro level, educated woman help in making the whole family including the older family members, understand the values and importance of education, and at macro level, educated women add to the social and economical development of the nation.
The various awakening programmes launched by the government for encouraging the girls education, the introduction of TV’s in rural areas, the 33% reservation given to females in Panchayats, have played positive role in this direction. Now the important of educating the girls is being felt. Several other policies, like 30% reservation to women candidates in services, enhanced subsidy to girls entrepreneurs, various self employment schemes launched for the benefits of women like Women Entrepreneur Development Programme, Self Help Groups of women have resulted in mobilizing and directing the parents to get their daughters educated. The educated women can help in eradicating many social evils prevalent in the society, like Dowry, killing the female foetus, discrimination in the matter of education of the girls , illiteracy and so on. Many programmes of the government like population control, polio eradication, programmes relating to the development of the rural area in which the cooperation and coordination of the rural masses are necessary, can well be taken care by the women representatives of the Panchayats. If these representatives are educated the implementation of the programs will be a grand success. Education gives effectiveness and confidence to the women.
Girls education is like sowing the seed which gives rise to green, cheerful and full grown family plant. In ancient time girl’s education had a significant place in the society. Gargi and Maitreyi played very encouraging role in spreading the education to a great extent. Women’s social conditions started deteriorating with the passage of time. Instead of giving them education, they are being subjected to sufferings under Purdah System, Child marriage. In some states female infanticide is prevalent even today. A new culture of elimination of female fetus has gradually become rampant discrimination between the education of girl and boy is common in rural areas. Parents feel that the education of girls is a wastage as they will go to their husbands after marriage and more dowry have to be paid for a more educated girl. The poverty and illiteracy among the people is also big reason for not sending the girls to schools and colleges. But things are being changed, though slowly, but gradually.
Undoubtedly true that girl’s education stimulates educational consciousness and civic sense among the family members. She can teach the family members more comfortably than anyone else. Illiteracy is the cause of many ills. The present day corruption in the bureaucracy particularly in the implementation of the schemes for the development of the rural segment to a large extent is because of the ignorance and illiteracy among the rural representatives. A woman influences the activities and decisions of family than anyone else. The educated girl can shoulder any kind of responsibility. Many women have earned a name in the society in our country. For the success of a
person whether man or woman, education plays an important role. Education for the girls is more important as she not only builds the home but all routine responsibilities are taken care of by her. An educated woman not only helps in nourishing the family in a better way but can also help in earning. Rightly said that God made the mother because he could not be present everywhere. “One could judge the degree of civilization of a country by the social and political position of its women” Charles Fourier Education for a girl child means making the next generation well educated, full of virtues, free from the useless superstitions, confident and capable to do something good for the family, for the society and for the country as a whole. The present day girl is the mother of tomorrow.
Did you know that: • In parts of the Horn of Africa girls are abducted for marriage, causing them to be reluctant to walk the far distances to get to school? • Throughout the Sahel region of Africa and parts of the Middle East, a dowry system, often promoting that girls leave their studies, is still in place? • The AIDS crisis in Southern Africa and Asia drives many young women, little more than children themselves, to become heads of families, become involved in child trafficking and drop out of school? • In parts of Latin America, girls and women from indigenous areas have little opportunity to learn to read and write? •
She is the most crucial and reverend entity. She must be given all the necessary education. Ignoring her, keeping her illiterate means we are creating an illiterate and ignorant generation. So it is perfectly true that educating a girl child means educating a family. Development cannot be accelerated unless girls are given right education in right direction. Swami Vivekananda has rightly said, “Educate your women first and leave them to themselves, then they will tell you what reforms are needed.” An Uneducated Girl is a Girl in Darkness Two-thirds of the world's 880 million illiterate adults are women. Girls are more than 70 percent of the 125 million children who don't have a school to attend. Significantly more girls than boys enrolled in the first grade fail to complete the first cycle of primary school. Social traditions and deep-rooted religious and cultural beliefs are most often the barriers to expanding girls' educational opportunities in undeveloped countries around the world.
Despite these conditions, there is much desire for change: Parents in even the poorest circumstances everywhere hope that their children will receive an education. Even though the barriers to education for girls in these countries are many, they are not insurmountable. This is why Save the Children works to reduce the obstacles to education for girls. Understanding the barriers to girls' education in particular is key to launching our innovative approaches. Educating girls and women results in: • Healthier, better educated children and grandchildren; • Fewer maternal deaths and reductions in the under 5 mortality rate; • Delayed marriage and better parenting skills; • Improved literacy and numeracy skills leading to greater economic opportunities; • More skills and knowledge enhancing women's self esteem and the well being of families.
SELF DEFENSE FOR WOMEN When most women think of “self-defense”, thoughts turn to the martial arts and most women don’t want to spend years of training to master a fighting system. In truth, self-defense takes on many forms. The first form is that of simply being “Danger Aware”. When you are aware of your surroundings, and don’t inadvertently put yourself in a position where you are at greater risk of attack, you are practicing a practical form of selfdefense. Maintaining Distance It is important that women understand the “distance rule” when dealing with strangers. A general rule of thumb is to maintain a safe distance rule of 8-10 feet between you and a stranger, especially when you are isolated or alone. This allows you to read their body language and maintain time to react should they suddenly approach. Wear Comfortable Clothing When going out of your home, wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Avoid tight-fitting clothing that restricts your movements. Wear a fanny pack or carry your purse under your arm, rather than dangling it by your hand. Fighting Back If you must fight back, try not to panic. Use whatever you have at your disposal (keys, purse, shoes, sticks, rocks, trash can lids, etc.) to seek to gain an advantage so you can escape. Your goal is to escape, and you must fight to win. Key Striking Points There are several vulnerable areas on the human body that can be exploited should you be attacked. Among these are: • Eyes: Gouging you fingers in an attacker’s eyes can cause temporarily blindness and disorientation. Remember, if an attacker cannot see you, he cannot attack you. • Ears: Cupping the hands and slapping the ears can cause a concussion. Twisting, pulling, or ripping
the ears can cause tremendous pain and disorient an attacker. If he is disoriented, it is easier to escape. • Throat: Punching or striking the throat, or grabbing and squeezing the trachea can cause an attacker to choke. If an attacker cannot breathe or is choking, he cannot effectively attack you. • Groin: Kicking into the groin, or grabbing and crushing the testicles of a male attacker can cause excruciating pain. Again, if the attacker is disoriented and in pain, it is easier to escape. Self-Defense Training While no system is perfect nor can guarantee you’ll never be the victim of an attack, there are a number of excellent books and videos on self-defense. These can provide you with some excellent insight and resources to protect yourself. The more knowledge you can gain on the subject of Danger Awareness and Self-Defense, the better. Training in the martial arts is also an option, and provides valuable health benefits as well. But many martial arts schools do not focus on “real” self-defense and as such present techniques that simply won’t work or are too complex to learn in a short amount of time. If you plan to train in the martial arts, make sure the Instructor is Women-Safe certified. Remember, these are no substitute for the training you can receive from a qualified self-defense instructor. Our Women-Safe instructors are trained to provide holistic, practical training in self-defense. Contact our office to enroll in a self-defense program, or to schedule a training workshop for your group or organization. You will find our program both educational and informative. The confidence your women will gain from participating in a Women-Safe event is something they will appreciate. 8 Simple Self-Defense Techniques 1. Fingernails are a weapon. If you are getting attacked, good women self defense tactics that you can learn involve using your nails to slash at the person who is attacking you. If you are getting assaulted, just use your finger nails to slash at their face. Not only does this hurt them, but law enforcement can also use the DNA as evidence.
5. The environment that you’re in. When it comes to women self defense techniques, think about the objects that are around you that you can use. An example of this is if you are being attacked and see a rock, grab it and punch at the attacker. This is not always a good idea, however. Sometimes you’re better off to simply flee. 6. Strike with the elbow.
2. Strike with your palm. Striking with your palm is one of the best women self defense techniques. The best way to do this is to use the palm of your dominant hand to aim at your attacker’s nose, which could break. Thrust your palm upward as you hit the portion of the nose near the nostril as hard as you can. This will cause bleeding and a broken nose, and their eyes will start to water. Once the eyes water, you can run away. 3. Kicking. The legs are strong. That’s why another great tactic amongst the women self defense techniques is to use them to kick various places on your attacker’s body such as the shin, knee, and groin. The idea is to kick with as much force as you can so they are too injured to fight back. 4. Choking defense.
Using the elbow for some women self defense techniques are good because it is so strong. You can only use an elbow strike if you are close to the attacker and your elbow isn’t pinned down. Your best bet is to aim for spots on their neck, face, or you can use the elbow to break their ribs. 7. Run after you disable them. It is important to keep in mind that the goal of any of the women self defense techniques is that you need to be able to run away. The idea is to do enough to disable the attacker so you can run. So, if you kick them in the groin and they fall to the ground in pain, use that opportunity to find safety instead of use more techniques. 8. Defend against weapons. Some of the potential situations you may get in will be with an attacker who has a gun, knife, or other weapon. That is why you need to learn some women self defense techniques that will help keep you safe. It is a good idea to take a course in this case.
If someone is choking you and they are doing so from the front of your body, you can use one of the women self defense techniques to get out if it. If the assailant is choking you, chances are your arms are free. Using your strongest hand you can press your pointer finger and middle finger in the soft part of their neck underneath the Adam’s apple. This succeeds in choking them. They’ll be surprised and may let go of you. Use this opportunity to kick them so you can flee.

While men are more interested in investments and entrepreneurship, women prefer to save and learn about finances Women are less afflicted than men by overconfidence, or the delusion that they know more than they really do. Women are also more likely to seek financial guidance than men. Men are usually too proud to seek help when faced with financial difficulties. Women’s ability to ask for help is related to listening skills. Usually men are more likely to follow their instincts without listening to others, while women place greater value on experts’ advice. Also, women are better communicators than men. Women tend to express their concerns to professional counselors and accept help, but men avoid talking about their problems with strangers
Most traders who lose money in markets attribute their losses to lack of Money Management & Discipline. And these include some of the most knowledgeable & experienced traders. While knowledge can be gained, the latter comes naturally to women. There is nothing about investing in stocks or investing in general that any woman of reasonable intelligence can’t grasp just as readily as a man of reasonable intelligence. In fact several studies & research have proved that women are better at managing finances. For most Indian households managing the monthly budgets has clearly being a woman’s domain. Successful traders know what they are buying & Women are generally careful customers. They know what they are buying and are always looking for a better deal. Women may shop more often than men and purchase several items, but it doesn’t mean they spend more. Women look for coupons and deals, reducing purchasing costs considerably. Men usually buy fewer but more expensive items than women. Women are more risk averse. Women, by contrast, put safety first. They are more inclined than men to wear seat belts, avoid cigarette smoking, floss and brush their teeth and get their blood pressure checked. They even have been
Women are big savers. Contrary to the common belief that women spend more, women are known to save more and periodically. Women are putting around double the proportion of their earnings away in savings compared with men, research has revealed.Female savers typically have 40% of their gross annual average income as compared to 22% for men. She is one of the most renowned police officers, who have put in their whole hearted effort in serving the society. Well, in this article, we will present you with the biography of Kiran Bedi, who is the pride of our Indian police force. In the recent times, she has been appointed as the Director General of India's Bureau of Police Research and Development. Earlier, she served as the Police Advisor in the United Nations peacekeeping department. For her noteworthy performance, she was awarded with the UN medal. In the year 2005, she received the honorary degree of Doctor of Law. She completed her graduation in the English language from the Government College for Women in Amritsar. She received her Masters degree in Political Science from Punjab University, Chandigarh. She continued her studies, even when she joined the Indian Police force. In the year 1988, she obtained a degree in Law (LLB) from Delhi University. In the year 1993, the Department of Social Sciences, the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi awarded her with a Ph.D. degree. Her topic of research was Drug Abuse and
She has also been the Lieutenant Governor of Chandigarh and Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau. An interesting thing about Kiran Bedi is that, sometimes, she is referred to as Crane Bedi. The reason behind calling her by this name is that, she dragged the car of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi due to violation of parking rules. Kiran Bedi made the Indian Police Service change its decision in matters related to traffic management, control over narcotics and VIP security. During her tenure as the Inspector General of Tihar Jail, she brought about several reforms in the way the prisons are managed. She brought forth a number of measures like yoga, meditation, redressal of complaints made by the prisoners etc. Kiran Bedi laid the foundation for the establishment of two voluntary organizations, namely, Navajyoti (1988) & India Vision Foundation (1994). These organizations were primarily set up with the aim of improving the living conditions of the drug addicts and the underprivileged people. The effort of Kiran Bedi has paid and brought her worldwide recognition. Her works have always earned appreciation. For drug abuse prevention, her organization was presented with the Serge Soitiroff Memorial Award by the United Nations.
Awards For her outstanding work, Kiran Bedi has received a number of accolades like: President's Gallantry Award (1979) Women of the Year Award (1980) Asia Region Award for Drug Prevention and Control (1991) Magsaysay Award for Government Service (1994) Mahila Shiromani Award (1995) Father Machismo Humanitarian Award (1995) Lion of the Year (1995) Joseph Beuys Award (1997) Pride of India (1999) Mother Teresa Memorial National Award for Social Justice (2005) When the country is grappling with thousands of sexual assault cases against women reported daily, trust Kiran Bedi to come up with one of the most holistic plans to combat these crimes. The former IPS officer and India Against Corruption member presented her 6Ps plan – Crime Prevention Plan within police, people (society), prosecution, politician, prison and press (news media and film industry) – onCNN-IBN. Bedi was confident that if this plan of hers is implemented, police administration can be improved and crime rate can be reduced to a considerable extent. She said, “6Ps means crime prevention plan within police, within people because community has a very major role to play. So the people, the police, the prosecution; then comes the role of the politician, the prisons and the media, which is the press and press also includes the films, and then comes the jail. So it is the 6Ps and a J.” Kiran Bedi also stressed on the need to devise a community plan because the plan would fail without the support of the community. “You can’t have sons of mothers, who have no control over their boys. So you need social, primary education at the family level, “she added. Though there is widespread skepticism over the role of the police, Bedi said, that can only be solved if there is community policing irrespective of beat policing. Community policing – a system
in which police officers of an area kept in touch with all the members and activities of that area, was a system that Kiran Bedi had put into place when she was a top cop in Delhi. She stressed the fact that the police must build relationships with families in the neighbourhood for effective policing. She said, “You see, when a beat officer goes, he is walking his beat, he is building relationships. He is also preventing crimes because he is collecting intelligence. He is also visiting past criminals and doing rehabilitation.” Interview with Kiran Bedi on Delhi Gang Rape Issue : The gang rape of a 23-year-old woman in across the country has also put the spotlight on policing in India’s “rape capital”. Kiran Bedi, a former police officer who won the Ramon Magsaysay award in 1994 for her work in the city, says the Dec. 16 gang rape could have been prevented. Bedi told Reuters in an email interview that a crime prevention plan and effective police training could help turn things around in New Delhi. Q: What happened on Dec. 16 — could it have been prevented? A: Totally preventable. If daily homework of crime prevention was done by the cops. Whether it was tough traffic checking, or responding to crimes reported, visible community policing, etc. And all over Delhi. Not at few places, by few officers.
Q: Were you surprised that police were targeted? A: No. They were rightly targeted for not doing their daily duties well on crime prevention or crime detection or community police relations building. Q: Police are being increasingly charged with insensitivity towards crimes against women. Why is that? A: It (is) because they feel not accountable to them. They have become more VIP-security oriented. Not common man sensitive. Corruption has rusted them.
Q: Is there absolutely no psychological training of our policemen for them to better handle people? A: None at all. Training is not a priority in policing. For some seniors, training is for the benefit of their successors only. Q: Does the insensitivity flow from top to bottom? A: Absolutely. We in the service follow a transactional model, not transformational model. It is illusive, distant and hierarchical. As against the need to be accessible, inclusive and collaborative. Q: What should a citizen, especially women, do when faced with an uncooperative policeman? A: Work through a network. Numbers pressure the police. Q: You have said you can help change things in Delhi police in 90 days. How do you plan to do it? A: Yes, it’s possible. If we put in place a crime prevention plan where all units work simultaneously. On crime prevention in collaboration (with) the community. The commissioner police system is effective, provided we use all its preventive sections of law. And the rules framed. And we make the police station function effectively… My offer to train police leadership and put the system on track remains. Once I do, they can continue to work on it. But then I will also put in place an external audit system to evaluate continuity. And review. Q: What do you think of the political, police and civilian response to the Delhi gang rape? A: Political response is only time serving. They lack sincerity. And authenticity. Police is also impersonal. It is not one of hurt. Civilian response has been volcanic where this case became the last straw on the camel’s back. It was like a simmering volcano which erupted… It was decades of cold, indifferent corrupt policing which would avoid recording crimes or avoid arrests, poorly investigate and laggard trials. With rapists out on bail without any conditions of preventive behaviour. Focus in the past few years in policing has been anti- terror, VIP, and law and order. Not crime prevention and community policing. Hence, the decline and the drought. Q: What is wrong with the current law and police procedures for crimes against women? What needs to be corrected? A: Urgent need for formulation of a crime prevention plan with sub-plans of all six Ps. … People — Collaborative policing with people while they self-police too Police — With their
own systems of crime prevention such as beat systems, verification and surveillance and intelligence systems, free registration of crimes + regular on-the-job training for quality investigations and more Prosecution — fast track trials with proper management of court work Politician — they give you the laws Press/media/Bollywood/pictures Prisons — To check contamination. And ensure reform … All six Ps are like an organic whole to ensure everyone’s security. Not only of women. These are all part of a healthy or sick body. Currently, they are sick due to which the body of policing is sick. We need to make (it) holistically healthy. Q: Do you support death penalty? In your policing career, has severity of punishment acted as a deterrent? A: Two things work. Respect for law and fear of law. We need both. We need certainty of punishment. And a tough one. Hence, such cases like the one we have all suffered require death penalty. Q: One of your tweets suggests that girls should choose their friends wisely in order to avoid getting sexually exploited. Is that not joining those who blame women for being raped? A: I am for girls being sensible and being alert on what company they keep. And for responsible behaviour of boys. Girls have to take extra care as they are biologically vulnerable. It’s not in one’s interest to be reckless. We have all been careful to survive. And this is wisdom. Prevention is a good habit. Q: You have also voiced support for an introspection of our popular culture especially in films, ads and songs. A: As a teenager, I once walked out of a dance which I thought was demeaning to me as a woman. The more self-respecting we as women will be, the less tolerant we shall be over obscene use of the gender. Q: When you were active in the police force, how did you specifically deal with the issue of sexual harassment of women? A: With utmost sensitivity and response. Q: What would be your advice to women — and men — in the current scenario? A: It’s a collective responsibility to make our society civil. And we must together perform our responsibilities in grooming our families. These form the nucleus of all communities. Perform our duties as parents, teachers, employers, opinion makers, public servants remaining conscientious.
MATRU KI BIJLEE DIMAAG GHUMA !!
SE
I have seen Sholay, I have seen Mr. Natwarlal, I have seen China Gate , I have seen Lagaan, I have seen Swades, then I had to seeJOKER and now I fell prey of “Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola“, no seriously Mr Bharadwaj what are you exactly trying to prove ? I am sure we are not paying money to see 2 and 1/2 hours of recap of all the “Gaon Bachao Andolan” !
MKBKM is a story about Mandola viallage in Haryana where the farmers are under the debt of Bank loan due to 3 years of drought, the wealthy tycoon Mandola (Pankaj Kapoor) wants to overtake the lands of the farmers to build housing colony and a SEZ with help of Minister (Shabana Azmi). Mandola has a drinking problem, whenever he drinks GULABO Beer, his favourite, he becomes a nice man which he usually is not for which he has hired Matru (Imran Khan) his man Friday to avoid him to drink more than 4 pegs. Matru is a messiah of the farmers since he is the only learned in the entire village and wants the farmers to sail through their misery. Bijlee is the beloved rich spoilt brat daughter Mandola who is to be married with Badal (Arya Babbar) son of Minister (Shabana Azmi). The story revolves around the simple plot of how Politicians use their undue Power with the help of Rich Business tycoons and supress the poor and add to their miseries Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is a a sad attempt to from Vishal Bharadwaj to prove that Art Cinema & Commercial Cinema co-exists. Althoug i had gone to see MKBKM i was made to believe that i
am seeing some B Grade Haryanvi Movie and more than half the dialogues of drunkard Pankaj Kapur were BOUNCERS ! A few light moments here and there in the movie which manage to make you smile for a moment, that’s the one good point about the film, the second good thing about the movie is Pankaj Kapur, what an actor Superb, i could sit through the movie only because of Pankaj Kapur
Visually MKBKM is not very appealing with limited locations and sets used, Music is Fair, nothing great not very bad either, Lootnewale, Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola need a special mention. One would feel that Imran Khan was too desperate to do a village setup film with an arty director ala Ranbor Kapoor in Rajneeti with Prakash Jha. Anushka sharma needs to get out of the mould of Happy Go Lucky next door girl and play something something out of the box, Shabana Azmi is a natural artist its been long since we saw a noticable role of her since 2007 – Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. And last but by no means Least Pankaj Kapur the best of the lot, what an actor he is Perfect to the T, I Dont think anyone else would have done justice to the role as Pankaj Kapur has done. On the Whole MKBKM is a definate skippable movie, actually dont see it, save yourselves some time, money and headache !
Capricorn – HC 11,12,13 makes it easy to remember not everyone is working on the same list with the same intensity as you. Burn your candle at both ends, not someone else's. Get your goals on paper.
