VIMALNATH BHAGAVAN -13 King Kritvarma and queen Shyanan Devi of Kampilpur were both spiritualists and devotees of the Jina. The queen one day saw fourteen auspicious things in her dream and the augurs announced that she will give birth to a Tirthankar. It was the pious soul that in its earlier birth was king Padmasen of Mahapuri town in Datakikhand and had descended into the queens womb from the Mahardhik dimension of gods. During her pregnancy the queen radiated a soothing glow. Her temperature also became congenial, kind, and generous. When the child was born the whole atmosphere was also filled with a soothing glow. Inspired by this spread of purity, the king named his new born son as Vimal (pure/untarnished). In due course, prince Vimal Kumar became young, was married, and then ascended the throne. After a long and successful reign he became a Shraman along with one thousand other kings and princes on the fourth day of the bright half of the month of Magh. After two years of spiritual practices he attained omniscience and established the religious ford. Merak Prativasudev, Svayambhu Vasudev, and Bhadra Baldev were his contemporaries. Bhagavan Vimalnath got Nirvana at Sammetshikhar on the seventh day of the dark half of the month of Ashadh. ANANTNATH BHAGAVAN - 14 Queen Suyasha Devi, wife of king Simhasen of Ayodhya, gave birth to an illustrious son on the thirteenth day of the dark half of the month of Vaishakh. During her pregnancy the queen dreamt of a very long strand of beads whose ends were not visible. The power and the glory of the king also increased manifold during this period. Accordingly the new born was named Anant (endless) Kumar.
After leading a normal life, first as a price and then as the king he became an ascetic along with one thousand other persons. He became an omniscient on the fourteenth day of the dark half of the month of Vaishakh under an Ashok tree. In his first discourse he elaborated the subject of the fundamentals-matter and life. He had fifty chief disciples including the senior most named Yash. Purushottam Vasudev and Suprabh Baldev reigned during his period of influence. Bhagavan Anantnath got Nirvana at Sammetshikhar on the fifth day of the bright half of the month of Chaitra. DHARMNATH BHAGAVAN - 15 The being that was to become Bhagavan Dharmnath was king Dridhrath of Bhaddilpur in Mahavideh area, in its earlier incarnation. Although he had enormous wealth and a large kingdom, he led a detached and pious life like a lotus in a pond. Even great saints praised him as the embodiment of religion. During the later part of his life king Dridhrath became an ascetic and as a result of his unblemished character and sincere spiritual practices he earned the Tirthankar-nam-and-gotra-karma. Completing his age he reincarnated as a god in the Vaijayant dimension. This being then descended into the womb of queen Suvrata, wife of king Bhanuraja of Ratnapur. During the pregnancy the queen devoted all her time in religious activities. Even the king and all other members of the family were inclined to devote maximum time to various religious activities like charity, righteousness, penances, studies etc. On the third day of the bright half of the month of Magh a son was born to the queen. Due to the religious influence during the pregnancy period, the king gave him the name Dharmnath. In due course he became young, was married and then ascended the throne. He ruled successfully for a long period. One day he terminated all worldly attachments and became and ascetic. After two years of spiritual practices he became omniscient. His first religious discourse was attended by the fifth Vasudev Purush Simha and Sudarshan Baldev.
In his first discourse he mainly dealt with the subject of form and ill effects of passions. A large audience was benefited by this eloquent discourse. At last he went to Sammetshikhar and got Nirvana. SHANTINATH BHAGAVAN - 16 The account of the earlier incarnations of Bhagavan Shantinath indicates that his being had taken the path of discipline that lead toward purity of soul many births before. As a result of this uplifting during his incarnations as Shrisen and Vajrayudh it was born as Meghrath, the son of king Dhanrath of Pundarikini town in Purva Mahavideh area. At the proper time, king Dhanrath gave the kingdom to Meghrat and became an ascetic. Protection to a Refugee Meghrath was a benevolent and religious ruler. He was compassionate and protected all living things. Being a Kshatriya and a warrior he had the chivalry to sacrifice all he had in order to protect those in trouble. One day while observing the partial renunciation vow (Paushadh) he was about to start a discourse on the religion propagated by the Tirthankars. All of a sudden a pigeon, trembling with fear, fell in his lap and uttered in choking human voice, "Save me, O king! Give me refuge, take me under your protection!" The compassionate king comforted the bird and took it under his protection. The pigeon was followed by a falcon who too uttered in human language, "O king! This pigeon is my food, leave it alone." The king tried to explain, "It has taken refuge with me, as such I am duty bound to protect it. I will give you any type of food you want; why kill a living thing just to fill your stomach?" The falcon insisted, "If you will not leave it I may die of hunger. I am a carnivore; who will provide me food. If I die, you will be responsible and bear the sin." When the falcon did not yield, Meghrath said at last, "O falcon! As long as I exist, I will not allow
you to die. I will cut out flesh from my body equivalent to the weight of this little pigeon and give it to you. You may satisfy your urge to eat. But under no circumstance I shall allow you to kill the bird that has taken refuge with me." The falcon agreed to this proposal and the king put the pigeon in one pan of balance and in the other started putting pieces of flesh cut out from his own body. Surprisingly, the weight of the pigeon continued to increase as the king went on putting his flesh in the pan. Witnessing this pathetic scene, the queens and the members of the assembly were moved to tears. They requested the king not to sacrifice his precious life for a mere pigeon. The falcon, was also requested relent but he too declined. The king continued to cut flesh from his body and put it in the pan of the balance. At last, when the pieces of flesh were not enough, the king got up from his seat and sat down in the pan. Everyone present was dumb struck at this lofty compassion and chivalry displayed by the king. Suddenly there was a flesh of divine light and a divine personage appeared. The pigeon and the falcon disappeared. The god addressed the king, "Maharaj! The king of gods was praising your compassion and courage, in his assembly. I could not contain myself and came around to test you myself. All this was my creation. You come out with flying colors. You are worthy of the praise bestowed on you by the King of gods. Please forgive me." The god filled Meghrath’s wounds instantaneously and left for his abode. Whenever there is a talk about chivalry and compassion king Meghrath’s name is taken with respect.

THUMB TACK LANTERNS I've had this project in my head for months, since Lauren from The Thinking Closet guest posted these awesome punched tin ornaments. I love this project, because you probably already have everything you need on hand, and you can easily make them on the sofa while watching something on TV. What you need: 1. Cardstock (I used textured card stock like this(Spectrum Cardstock), but you could also use standard like this (Cardstock Starter Kit) 2. A Pencil and Eraser 3. A Thumb Tack 4. Scissors or a Paper Cutter 5. Double Sided Tape * Optional: Templates or Stencils for the Design What you do: 1. Lightly sketch a simple design on the front center of a piece of cardstock. I really like the way that the textured paper looks. Remember that you are drawing on the side of the paper that will be showing. 2. Put your paper onto a piece of Styrofoam or foam board and start punching holes with a thumb tack along your design. Be careful to not poke two holes too close together to prevent tearing. This actually takes a lot less time than it looks like. 3. Continue making holes until you have dotted all along your design. 4. Go back and erase the pencil marks with a good eraser. Be careful and gentle and do not press the paper down against a hard surface, or the holes will close back a little bit. 5. Cut the paper into strips. I made tall versions at first, and then some shorter versions. The tall ones were 6.5" x 11" and the short ones were 4" x 11". 6. Wrap your cardstock around a cylinder (I used a large candle) and secure it with double sided tape. I found that the double sided tape was definitely strong and secure enough for this project.
These could pose a fire hazard if you just place them directly around a burning candle. I would highly recommend small flameless candles, or votive candles placed inside glass votive holders.
I love how these lanterns look light up with candles. They are also cute during the day when the candles aren't lit. These were so much fun to make, I want to make more with other designs and patterns on them. A monogrammed letter would be especially cute for a wedding.

For those who are considering adopting a vegan diet, one of the most common concerns is whether a diet that includes only plant foods can be nutritionally adequate. Considering the position that animal-based foods have in the standard Western diet, this is hardly surprising. However, there is increasing evidence that suggests that not only is a whole-food vegan diet nutritionally adequate, but that eliminating animal-based foods can actually reduce one’s risk of disease and encourage overall physical health and well-being. “In 2009, the American Dietetic Association, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, released a paper explaining their position on vegetarian diets, including vegan diets. ‘It is the position of the ADA that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of life, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence, and for athletes.’” For those who are concerned about obtaining adequate amounts of specific nutrients, it’s useful to know which foods contain what. TAX-SAVINGS INSTRUMENTS Had you been deferring your tax planning so far? The current financial year is about to end and there is no room for procrastination now. If you do not plan your taxes now, you will end up paying a hefty sum.
NSCs and FDs: Another safe debt option is National Savings Certificates (NSCs). In the latest issue of NSCs, you have two instruments with maturity of 5 years and 10 years with interest rates of 8.4 per cent and 8.7 per cent, respectively.
As a late planner, you will not get the maximum benefits from tax-savings instruments due to the notional loss in investment, but you can minimise the damage.
Investments up to Rs 1 lakh in NSCs are eligible for tax deductions under 80C but the interest, compounded semi-annually, is taxable. Interest rates are benchmarked to government securities of equivalent maturity periods, with 10-year NSCs offering an additional 50 basis points return.
"If you have not planned taxes in advance, make sure to consider age, risk-return profile, liabilities and dependents before you invest," says Kapil Narang, COO, Ameriprise India, a financial advisory firm.
You can also consider investing in 5-year fixed deposits. The interest accrued is taxable.
Your tax-saving investments should depend on your financial needs and goals. These should be distributed among assets classes to reap the dual advantage of lowering tax burden as well as building your portfolio. See which tax-saving instruments provide you this edge.

JOLLY LLB REVIEW Come to think of it, very few movies can claim to make you laugh at the right places, yet mirror the realities that plague the nation concurrently. JOLLY LLB walks the thin line wonderfully. The on-screen characters seem straight out of everyday life and if I am not mistaken, this is, perhaps, the first Hindi movie that finds humor within the confines of a courtroom, besides presenting a captivating courtroom drama so effectively. JOLLY LLB works for yet another reason: It's a fascinating account of an underdog who locks horns with a much-senior, much-powerful and muchinfluential lawyer and emerges triumphant, after facing a lot of hardships. Jolly [Arshad Warsi], a Meerut-based lawyer, arrives in Delhi in search of a case that would make him affluent and celebrated instantaneously. As luck would have it, Jolly gets involved in a case which pitches him against a mighty opponent -- the hugely successful and unbeatable lawyer [Boman Irani]. For decades, a majority of Hindi movies have projected courtrooms so differently. From what a real courtroom looks like to how the lawyers argue cases, besides speaking in chaste Urdu or Hindi, most Hindi movies seem to be completely detached from realism. In actuality, the situation may be grim and serious, but JOLLY LLB places a judge, two warring lawyers and sundry characters in a realistic setting, yet discovers humor in the most unexpected [dark] situations. A satire on the judicial system, the film boasts of powerful courtroom sequences [reminds you of NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, at times], but, most importantly, it has several poignant moments that you carry home after the screening has concluded. The arguments in the packed courtroom and also between the lawyers -Boman and Arshad -- is the soul of the enterprise. Also, a number of sequences featuring the judge [Saurabh Shukla], especially the one when he loses his cool, are nothing short of brilliant.
Above and beyond the serious tone of the movie, the humor in Subhash Kapoor's movies stems from commonplace stuff, which is evident in JOLLY LLB as well. If I may say so, it's very close to what Rajkumar Hirani projects in his movies. At the same time, the dramatic/serious moments and the way the argument proceeds in the courtroom have been handled most realistically. I'd like to make a special mention of the dialogue, also penned by the director, which enhance the impact of several sequences. Anshuman Mahaley's cinematography is most appropriate. Sanjoy Chowdhary's background score is exhilarating. Blemishes? This should've been a songless fare. The songs act as a hindrance, for sure. Even otherwise, the soundtrack is plain ordinary. Also, the pace slackens, albeit slightly, towards the middle of the film. JOLLY LLB rests on three shoulders primarily -Arshad, Boman and Saurabh Shukla. Accomplished actors, all... and together they set the screen ablaze with their terrific acts. Arshad is magnificent. Known for his impeccable comic timing, this movie is sure to make people realize that he's equally fab while handling dramatic/serious moments. Boman is top notch in a role that seems tailor-made for him. The arrogance, haughtiness, overconfidence and manipulative streak in his character comes alive thanks to his bravura act. Saurabh is extraordinary and in certain sequences, the scene-stealer. This is one performance that will win him immense admirers, besides accolades of course. It's wonderful to see Amrita Rao after a hiatus. Though the film belongs to the above-named actors, she makes her presence felt every time she appears on screen. The supporting cast delivers sparkling performances as well. Manoj Pahwa is first-rate. Harsh Chhaya is admirable. Mohan Kapur is proficient. Mohan Agashe is wonderful. Veteran Ramesh Deo is super. Sanjay Mishra is perfect in a cameo. Sandeep Bose [as the corrupt cop], Ishtiaq Arif Khan, Mukund Bhatt and Rajiv Siddharth are satisfactory. On the whole, JOLLY LLB is a power-packed courtroom drama. But, most importantly, it celebrates the spirit of the common man seeking justice and impartiality most effectively. Just don't miss this jolly good film!
THE NEW MESSENGER OF CHIRSTANITY – POPE FRANCIS
VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis is the first ever from the Americas, an austere Jesuit intellectual who modernized Argentina's conservative Catholic church. Known until Wednesday as Jorge Bergoglio, the 76year-old is known as a humble man who denied himself the luxuries that previous Buenos Aires cardinals enjoyed. He came close to becoming pope last time, reportedly gaining the second-highest vote total in several rounds of voting before he bowed out of the running in the conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI. Groups of supporters waved Argentine flags in St. Peter's Square as Francis, wearing simple white robes, made his first public appearance as pope. "Ladies and Gentlemen, good evening," he said before making a reference to his roots in Latin America, which accounts for about 40 percent of the world's Roman Catholics Bergoglio often rode the bus to work, cooked his own meals and regularly visited the slums that ring Argentina's capital. He considers social outreach, rather than doctrinal battles, to be the essential business of the church. He accused fellow church leaders of hypocrisy and forgetting that Jesus Christ bathed lepers and ate with prostitutes. "Jesus teaches us another way: Go out. Go out and share your testimony, go out and interact with your brothers, go out and share, go out and ask. Become the Word in body as well as spirit," Bergoglio told Argentina's priests last year.
Bergoglio's legacy as cardinal includes his efforts to repair the reputation of a church that lost many followers by failing to openly challenge Argentina's murderous 1976-83 dictatorship. He also worked to recover the church's traditional political influence in society, but his outspoken criticism of President Cristina Kirchner couldn't stop her from imposing socially liberal measures that are anathema to the church, from gay marriage and adoption to free contraceptives for all. "In our ecclesiastical region there are priests who don't baptize the children of single mothers because they weren't conceived in the sanctity of marriage," Bergoglio told his priests. "These are today's hypocrites. Those who clericalize the Church. Those who separate the people of God from salvation. And this poor girl who, rather than returning the child to sender, had the courage to carry it into the world, must wander from parish to parish so that it's baptized!" Bergoglio compared this concept of Catholicism, "this Church of 'come inside so we make decisions and announcements between ourselves and those who don't come in, don't belong," to the Pharisees of Christ's time — people who congratulate themselves while condemning all others. This sort of pastoral work, aimed at capturing more souls and building the flock, was an essential skill for any religious leader in the modern era, said Bergoglio's authorized biographer, Sergio Rubin. But Bergoglio himself felt most comfortable taking a very low profile, and his personal style was the antithesis of Vatican splendor. "It's a very curious thing: When bishops meet, he always wants to sit in the back rows. This sense of humility is very well seen in Rome," Rubin said before the 2013 conclave to choose Benedict's successor. Bergoglio's influence seemed to stop at the presidential palace door after Nestor Kirchner and then his wife, Cristina Fernandez, took over the Argentina's government. His outspoken criticism couldn't prevent Argentina from becoming the Latin American country to legalize gay marriage, or stop
Fernandez from promoting free contraception and artificial insemination. His church had no say when the Argentine Supreme Court expanded access to legal abortions in rape cases, and when Bergoglio argued that gay adoptions discriminate against children, Fernandez compared his tone to "medieval times and the Inquisition." This kind of demonization is unfair, says Rubin, who obtained an extremely rare interview of Bergoglio for his biography, the "The Jesuit." "Is Bergoglio a progressive — a liberation theologist even? No. He's no third-world priest. Does he criticize the International Monetary Fund, and neoliberalism? Yes. Does he spend a great deal of time in the slums? Yes," Rubin said. Bergoglio has stood out for his austerity. Even after he became Argentina's top church official in 2001, he never lived in the ornate church mansion where Pope John Paul II stayed when visiting the country, preferring a simple bed in a downtown building, heated by a small stove on frigid weekends. For years, he took public transportation around the city, and cooked his own meals. That attitude was burnished as human rights activists tried to force him to answer uncomfortable questions about what church officials knew and did about the dictatorship's abuses after the 1976 coup. Many Argentines remain angry over the church's acknowledged failure to openly confront a regime that was kidnapping and killing thousands of people as it sought to eliminate "subversive elements" in society. It's one reason why more than two-thirds of Argentines describe themselves as Catholic, but fewer than 10 percent regularly attend mass. Under Bergoglio's leadership, Argentina's bishops issued a collective apology in October 2012 for the church's failures to protect its flock. But the statement blamed the era's violence in roughly equal measure on both the junta and its enemies.
"Bergoglio has been very critical of human rights violations during the dictatorship, but he has always also criticized the leftist guerrillas; he doesn't forget that side," Rubin said. The bishops also said "we exhort those who have information about the location of stolen babies, or who know where bodies were secretly buried, that they realize they are morally obligated to inform the pertinent authorities." That statement came far too late for some activists, who accused Bergoglio of being more concerned about the church's image than about aiding the many human rights investigations of the Kirchners' era. Bergoglio twice invoked his right under Argentine law to refuse to appear in open court, and when he eventually did testify in 2010, his answers were evasive, human rights attorney Myriam Bregman said. Initially trained as a chemist, Bergoglio taught literature, psychology, philosophy and theology before taking over as Buenos Aires archbishop in 1998. He became cardinal in 2001, when the economy was collapsing, and won respect for blaming unrestrained capitalism for impoverishing millions of Argentines. Later, there was little love lost between Bergoglio and Fernandez. Their relations became so frigid that the president stopped attending his annual "Te Deum" address, when church leaders traditionally tell political leaders what's wrong with society. During the dictatorship era, other church leaders only feebly mentioned a need to respect human rights. When Bergoglio spoke to the powerful, he was much more forceful. In his 2012 address, he said Argentina was being harmed by demagoguery, totalitarianism, corruption and efforts to secure unlimited power. The message resonated in a country whose president was ruling by decree, where political scandals rarely were punished and where top ministers openly lobbied for Fernandez to rule indefinitely.
