FIVE MEANS OF KNOWLEDGE ACCORDING TO JAINISM
boundaries of your ordinary awareness and faculties and is not generally available to every one. This is direct knowledge.
According to Jainism there are five ways in which the jivas obtain knowledge of the things and the world in which they live. Of them the first three are imperfect means of knowledge and prone to error, while the last two are perfect means of knowledge and convey the truth without error. These five means or instruments of knowledge are explained below:
Mahaparyaya :This knowledge is gained through the reading of others’ minds and thoughts. It is the knowledge of others that you gain through some extraordinary process like telepathy or mind reading.
Mati : Mati is mind Mati is the knowledge of the mind, gained usually through your senses, your memory, your membrance, your cognition, and your deductive reasoning. It  is something which you know with the help of your mind and its various faculties. From a soul’s perspective, this is indirect knowledge because it derived through the external agent of mind and its faculties.
Kevala : It is the highest knowledge that you gain when you transcend your ordinary self and become a Jina or Kevalin. It is knowledge itself that does not require any outward means for its awareness. It is always there, unattached, unlimited, and without any constraint, in the consciousness of the enlightened Jina. It cannot be described to others satisfaction, but can be experienced when the soul becomes liberated from earthly bondage.
Sruthi : When you learn something from other sources, other people or beings, through your observation of signs, symbols or words, we call it sruthignana or the knowledge of sruthi or hearing. This type of knowledge is gained through association, attention, understanding and naya or varied interpretations of the meaning of things. This is also indirect knowledge because of the external agents involved in btaining knowledge.
As we can see, the first two are indirect means of knowledge since we have to depend upon some external source such as the senses or the mind to know things, while the other three are direct, where you do not have to depend upon some external source to know about things.
Avadhi : You gain this type of knowledge not through any physical means such as the senses or the mind, but through your psychic bilities, or through your intuitive awareness, by overcoming the limitations of time and space.  It is beyond the
The essential nature of jiva is consciousness or chaitanya, which has both perception (darsana) and intelligence (jnana). The former is more general (samanya) and superficial and the latter more specific and detailed (visesa) in providing the souls with knowledge. According to Jain beliefs, a jiva does not have to depend upon senses only for perception. Even in a liberated state a jiva has the ability of perception, which it does intuitively without sense organs. Knowledge is both perfect and imperfect. Liberated souls possess perfect knowledge, which is free from doubt (samsaya), delusion (vimoha) and wrong perception (vibhrama). Knowledge is also both standard (pramana) and relative (naya). The former is based on a fact and the latter upon a perspective or stand point.
TATTVAS (FUNDAMENTALS) OF JAINISM Jain philosophy can be described in various ways, but the most acceptable tradition is to describe it in terms of Tattvas or fundamentals. They are: 1. Jiva (soul): All living beings are called Jivas. Jivas have consciousness known as the soul, which is also called the atma (soul - chetan). The soul and body are two different entities. The soul can not be reproduced. It is described as a sort of energy which is indestructible, invisible, and shapeless. Jainism divides jivas into five categories ranging from one-sensed beings to fivesensed beings. The body is merely a home for the soul. At the time of death, the soul leaves the body to occupy a new one. Tirthankaras have said that the soul has an infinite capacity to know and perceive. 2. Ajiva (non-living matter): Anything that is not a soul is called ajiva. Ajiva does not have consciousness. Jainism divides ajiva in five broad categories: dharmastikay (medium of motion), adharmastikay (medium of rest), akashastikay (space), pudgalastikay (matter), and kala (time). 3. Punya (results of good deeds): By undertaking these wholesome activities, we acquire punya or good karmas. Such activities are: providing food or other items to the needy people, doing charity work, propagating religion, etc. When punya matures, it brings forth worldly comfort and happiness. Digambar consider "Punya" as part of Asrava. 4. Pap (results of bad deeds): By undertaking bad activities, we acquire pap or bad karmas. Such activities are: being cruel or violent, showing disrespect to parents or teachers, being angry or greedy and showing arrogance or indulging in deceit. When pap matures, it brings forth worldly suffering, misery, and unhappiness. Digambar consider "Pap" as part of Asrava. 5. Asrava (influx of karmas): The influx of karman particles to the soul is known as asrav. It is caused by wrong belief, vowlessness (observing no vows), passions, negligence, and psychophysical activities. Such an influx of karmas is facilitated by mental, verbal, or physical activities. 6. Bandh (bondage of karmas): This refers to the actual binding of karman particles to the soul. Bandh occurs, when we react to any situation with a sense of attachment or aversion. 7. Samvar (stoppage of karmas): This is the process by which the influx of karman particles is stopped. This is achieved by observing samiti (carefulness), gupti (control), tenfold yati-dharma
(monkshood), contemplating the twelve bhavanas (mental reflections), and parishaha (suffering). 8. Nirjara (eradication of karmas): The process by which we shed off karmas is called nirjara. Karmas can be shed off either by passive or active efforts. When we passively wait for karmas to mature and give their results in due time, it is called Akam Nirjara. On the other hand, if we put active efforts for karmas to mature earlier than due time, it is called Sakam Nirjara. Sakam Nirjara can be achieved by performing penance, repentance, asking for forgiveness for the discomfort or injury we might have caused to someone, meditation, etc. 9. Moksha (liberation): When we get rid of all the karmas, we attain liberation or moksha. Now, let us use a simple analogy to illustrate these Tattvas. There lived a family in a farm house. They were enjoying the fresh cool breeze coming through the open doors and windows. The weather suddenly changed, and a terrible dust storm set in. Realizing it was a bad storm, they got up to close the doors and windows. By the time they could close all the doors and windows, much dust had entered the house. After closing all of the doors and windows, they started cleaning away the dust that had come into the house. We can interpret this simple illustration in terms of Nav-Tattvas as follows: 1) Jivas are represented by the people. 2) Ajiva is represented by the house. 3) Punya is represented by worldly enjoyment resulting from the nice cool breeze. 4) Pap is represented by worldly discomfort resulting from the sand storm, which brought dust into the house. 5) Asrava is represented by the influx of dust through the doors and windows of the house which is similar to the influx of karman particles to the soul. 6) Bandh is represented by the accumulation of dust in the house, which is similar to bondage of karman particles to the soul. 7) Samvar is represented by the closing of the doors and windows to stop the dust from coming into the house, which is similar to the stoppage of influx of karman particles to the soul. 8) Nirjara is represented by the cleaning up of accumulated dust from the house, which is similar to shedding off accumulated karmic particles from the soul. 9) Moksha is represented by the clean house, which is similar to the shedding of all karmic particles from the soul.
WORK FROM HOME OPTION FOR WOMEN
The differentiating factor between the two is only where you are working from, home or office.
After the birth of my daughter I found myself in a dilemma of being a mother or a career woman. If you are a woman who takes pride in her financial independence, and her individuality, you would easily identify with my predicament. Torn between these two choices I looked around for a job which could help me do justice to both. That is when I came across this advertisement in the newspaper ‘Ever thought of working from the comfort of your own home, in your own time, at your own pace, when you want and where you want, then online data entry is just what you’re looking for.’ And this was the answer to my prayers. In today’s high-tech world, data has become a vital and integral part of our daily lives. With the computer boom era data entry has gained a lot of importance in collecting and presenting information. In traditional data entry, one is asked to either copy-paste certain details in multiple documents, or to input information in some simple forms. Basically, it is a tedious kind of work which is repetitive in nature. What is Data entry Data entry can be broadly defined as the act of transcribing some form of information into an online document, database, program, etc. It is mostly a time consuming and tedious task which is often outsourced to save time and money. In addition, home based data entry jobs may also include the preparation of correspondence, reports, spreadsheets, lists, records and also the management of this information. Working from home need not be construed as ‘easy money’ which many ads wrongly claim. It requires tremendous amount of dedication and professionalism as demanded by a full time job.

Requirements of a Data Entry Operator A data entry worker would need: a. Infrastructural requirements : •
Some specific types of equipment, network capabilities and software.
•
Setting up and maintaining a data security system and a data protection process to ensure that the information is kept private and secured.
b. Individual’s requirements : •
You should have the patience and capacity to accurately record and/or scrutinize data to give the right picture about the business.
•
Good typing speed to capture and record the data provided correctly and also in a time efficient manner
•
You need to be reliable and punctual in the delivery of the work.
•
Having good computer skills and a strong command on English are a few unwritten essentials in this job.
•
Having some data entry experience is certainly advantageous but is not a prerequisite. Many companies requiring specialized data entry work often impart training to such job seekers before recruiting them. In this scenario you need to have the aptitude to develop and enhance the required skills during such training sessions.
How To Find Data Entry Jobs a. Google search – Typing the key words ‘data entry’, ‘data recorder’,’ freelancer’ etc provides us with numerous data entry job opportunities all around the world. b. Craig’s list –This is the largest classified online website available on the internet to track down data entry jobs. It not only provides with the data entry employer’s details but also gives you a portal to post your home based data entry services .Craig’s list also permits you to filter such opportunities closer to your hometown thereby enabling more efficiency and prompt delivery of services. c. Local print sources- Newspapers, fliers and advertisements in supermarkets; malls
etc also give information about such opportunities in our neighborhood. d. Personal networking – You can use the social network platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook to professionally announce about your experience and/or expertise in data entry, thereby spreading the information that your connections and/or their connections would get the best data entry worker in you. Guidelines One of the biggest drawbacks in this job scenario is the presence of many fraudsters. Therefore it is imperative to do a thorough research on the company you select to work for before actually entering into a contract with them. There are companies asking you to invest in them before you actually earn from them. Such companies need to be reviewed carefully through public forums for unbiased and official information from people who have worked for such companies. Conclusion Of late, home based data entry work has grown manifold and has not been affected by the recession in the other industries. Now it is gradually becoming another competitive occupation with jobs being outsourced to highly skilled professionals in other countries also. Hence if you are serious about this home based job opportunity you need to specialize and hone your skills to keep abreast with this industry’s dynamic requirements and thereby maximize your employment chances.
WHO LIKES SLOW COMPUTERS? LET’S MAKE THEM FAST … VERY FAST However, although computers do slow down after the installation of software, the main reason they get slower is because every year newer software has bigger and bigger requirements. For example: The Windows 98 operating system required 24 megabytes of memory and just 200 megabytes of hard drive space, whereas Windows 7 requires 2 gigabytes of memory and 20 gigabytes of hard drive space. As we learned in How to Back Up Your Data, a gigabyte is about a thousand megabytes so in a 10-year span the requirements for computers have increased 100 times. Who wouldn’t slow down! For us, this means that without upgrading, our computer’s specifications don’t change at all. But every year, software needs more and more of your computer’s precious resources. So when you install software on a 5-year-old computer, it will slow it down a lot more then it would if you installed it on a new computer.
People run into this problem a lot when they wipe their computer clean and reinstall the operating system. Their computer will be just as fast as the day they bought it, but the moment they install new software that is a few years younger than the computer, well, that’s when it slows way down again. That said, I would like to debunk one myth that seems to persist in the technology world year after year: Registry cleaners do not work! The registry in Windows keeps information about your system and programs so programs that claim to “clean” the registry might end up deleting information that allows your programs to run correctly. My advice is to just avoid cleaning your registry altogether.
They can even be harmful to your computer. If you come across programs that promise to clean your registry, I advise against them. PC sometimes take over 10 minutes to start up. Now it just takes about a minute. Want to know how you can do it? Here’s how: 1. Upgrade Your RAM Yeah, the most obvious tip but people hardly upgrade it. RAM these days is very cheap, especially if you buy it through Amazon or eBay. When I checked online, the price of 1 GB RAM was around Rs. 1000- Rs1500. 2. Get Rid of Unneeded Software Most PCs come shipped with unneeded software. Uninstall all of them. I’m sure there are better alternatives to those software. For example, my PC came shipped from hp with lots of bloat ware such as HP Image Zone, Norton Antivirus 2004, Record Now! CD & DVD Burning software etc. I uninstalled all of them and replaced them with better software like Picasa and Nero. 3. Keep Only One Browser This is part of the getting rid of unneeded applications but I decided to separate it because so many people have 3, or even 4 browsers installed on their computer. I used to do this; I used to have Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. Now I only have Mozilla Firefox. Yes, I even removed Internet Explorer! Now you might be wondering how do I update Windows without Internet Explorer, right? Here’s how I do it, and you can too: To update Windows from within Firefox, just download the IE Tab add-on. Using that plugin, you can access IE only sites like Windows Update with ease. 4. Get an All-in-One Solution for Your IM Needs I’m guessing that most of you have at least 2 IM clients installed. Uninstall all of them. Instead, get Digsby. Digsby is an All-in-One solution for your social media and IM needs.
5. Limit the Programs that Start Automatically The programs that load automatically after your Windows starts can severely cripple the load time. To reduce the number of programs that start autoload, download Revo Uninstaller. Disable the autoloading of applications carefully though. The rule of thumb is that if you don’t know what the app does, don’t disable it. 6. Delay the Startup of Your Remaining Auto loading Programs Even after you’ve disabled the autoloading of most programs, there still is room to improve. The thing is that when your PC starts up, all your startup apps are fighting to run at the same time, which creates a bottleneck. To mitigate this effect, you can delay the launch of each of your startup program by a few seconds or minutes. Startup Delayer is an awesome app that does this. 7. Tweak Windows’s Display & Animation Settings Right-click on “My Computer” > Go to the “Advanced” tab and click on “Settings” under “Performance”. Now uncheck the checkbox next to “Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing”. Disabling them won’t make your PC behave quicker per se but it will fasten the minimizing and maximizing of windows. 8. Disable Desktop Shortcuts Shortcuts on your desktop are a waste. Not only do they increase your computer startup time, they also are an inefficient way to open stuff. There are more efficient ways to access applications, such through the Start Menu, the Quick Launch menu, or through software such as Launchy. To hide desktop shortcuts, right-click on your desktop, go to “Arrange Icons by” and uncheck “Show Desktop Icons” by clicking on it. 9. Check for Malware, Spyware, Viruses Regularly The most important tip I can give you is to 1) have a firewall, 2) have an anti-spyware app, 3) have an anti-virus app, and 4) Regularly scan for viruses, spyware etc. If there’s a virus or some spyware slowing down your computer then none of the above tips can help you. You’ll first have to disinfect your PC. I use Ad-Aware 2008 as my
anti-spyware app and Norton Internet Security 2009 as my firewall and anti-virus app. If you follow the nine tips that I wrote above, I can guarantee that your PC will run 2x or even 3x faster. PS: You can use Boot Timer to measure how much time your PC takes to startup fully.

THINK BEFORE YOU EAT A variety of protein, fats and carbohydrates should be included in the best vegetarian weight loss diet. Scientific studies tell you that the healthiest of diets will incorporate all food groups, and it is possible to get all the variety you need from a plant-based diet. A diet low in carbohydrates has been part of a trend that cuts down on certain food types in order to lose weight, but here you will see the importance of each food group, that should not be left out of a vegetarian diet for weight loss. All together, they will contribute to your losing weight successfully and without going hungry.
The Importance of Protein In A Diet
Protein fuels our muscles and helps us build more lean muscle mass. It is digested slower than carbohydrates, so it helps us feel satisfied longer. Protein is a food of choice for sustained energy; runners eat protein to keep their energy levels high during marathon runs. One criticism of vegetarian diets is that they don’t provide enough protein. This is actually a baseless fear, since you can get plenty of protein without eating meat. The best vegetarian weight loss diet will always incorporate protein from nuts and nut butters; soy and meat substitutes; and lowfat dairy products. These proteins are even more complete than the ones you get from meat, and they’re much lower in saturated fat. In addition to protein, the best vegetarian weight loss diet should include plenty of calcium. It has proven fat-burning qualities that will have you slimmer in no time.
The Importance of Fats Like protein, dietary fat keeps our hunger under control. It’s also one of the most misunderstood food groups. Low-fat diets are often unsatisfying, but trans and saturated fats are dangerous to our hearts.
Why would the best vegetarian weight loss diet be high in fat? All fats should be eaten in moderation, but unsaturated fats should be part of a hearthealthy diet. These fats come from plant sources like olives and olive oil, avocados, and nuts, making them a perfect choice for vegetarians. Unsaturated fats have been shown to prevent heart disease, and they can even reduce plaque buildup caused by high cholesterol. These fats raise levels of good cholesterol, which sweeps through arteries and clears away plaque. Unsaturated fats also lower levels of the bad cholesterol that accumulates in arteries. Because of its ability to satisfy hunger and reduce cravings, fat is an important tool for dieters. If you go too long without it, you risk having strong cravings and feeling hungry most of the time – a recipe for weight loss disaster! and definitely time to start the best vegetarian weight loss diet you can find.
Carbs & Vitamins Vegetarian diets provide plenty of carbohydrates. Carbs are good for quick energy, so they’re a good food choice before and after workouts. But be careful which carbs you eat. The best vegetarian weight loss diet should not include products containing a lot of refined sugar, starch, or white flour. Refined foods can actually make you gain weight and can leave you hungrier than before! The best carbohydrate sources are fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. If you can’t give up bread and pasta, switch to whole wheat and whole grain varieties. These products contain more fiber than their refined counterparts, and they don’t cause blood sugar spikes and crashes.
DENGUE PREVENTION CHECKLIST
Cover bamboo pole holders after use. Rainwater can potentially accumulate in these bamboo pole holders if they are uncovered and create a habitat. No tray or receptacles should be placed beneath and or/ on top of any air-conditioning unit so as not to create a condition favourable for mosquito breeding. Every other day Change water in flower vases. Clean and scrub the inner sides of vases. Wash roots of flowers and plants thoroughly as mosquito eggs can stick to them easily.
To prevent the spread of dengue fever, you must first prevent the breeding of its vector, the Aedes mosquito. The Aedes mosquito is easily identifiable by its distinctive black and white stripes on their body. It prefers to breed in clean, stagnant water easily found in our homes. You can get rid of the Aedes mosquito by frequently checking and removing stagnant water in your premises. The guidelines below will give you an overview of how you can prevent the Aedes mosquito from breeding. For residents in HDB and condominiums For residents in landed homes Dengue Prevention slides At all times Turn pails and watering cans over and store them under shelter. Loosen soil from potted plants to prevent the accumulation of stagnant water on the surface of the hardened soil. Do not block the flow of water in scupper drains along common corridors in HDB estates. Avoid placing potted plants and other paraphernalia over the scupper drains. Cover rarely used gully traps. Replace the gully trap with non-perforated ones and install antimosquito valves.
Once a week Clear fallen leaves and stagnant water in your scupper drains and garden. These leaves could collect water or cause blockages to the drains, thus resulting in the buildup of stagnant water. . Clear any stagnant water in your air cooler unit. Once a month Add prescribed amounts of sand granular insecticide into vases, gully traps and roof gutters, even if they are dry. You can see the list of retailers who carry sand granular insecticides in their stores at this webpage: http://www.nea.gov.sg/aedes/insecticides Clear away fallen leaves in roof gutters and apron drains. HOW CREDIT CARDS WORK IT'S said that Forewarned is often Forearmed. This aphorism has given birth to a generation of knowledge seekers. Everyone wants to know every detail about everything before they do anything. No wonder websites like Howstuffworks.com have been born and are doing rather well.
While it may not serve any purpose to know how snow leopards mate or how galangal is grown in Thailand, there are a few things that we would do well to learn about. Credit cards is definitely one of them. Let's learn some fast facts: The Basics When you apply for a credit card, the bank you apply to carefully screens your application. You cant blame them given that there is always a crook around the corner. A credit limit is worked out for you, based on your financial capability and other parameters like income levels, educational qualifications, age etc. The bank that issues you the card is called the 'issuing bank'. The Business From the bank's point of view, credit cards are good business for two reasons. Banks make money through fees from merchant establishment. The higher than normal interest rate paid by cardholders for the balance in their card. So what are these merchant establishments? These form the heart of the business. Merchant establishments can be hotels, shops, travel agencies or any place where money transactions are made. The banks that enroll merchant establishments are called 'acquiring banks'.
The relationship between the bank and the merchant establishments is run via international networks such as Visa and Master card. Your credit card is valid in any merchant establishment that accepts your network (ie Master Card or Visa), irrespective of the issuing bank. Most Indian card issuing banks are part of either Master Card network or Visa network, or both. There are others credit card networks like American Express and Diners Club too. The merchant establishment finds the credit card a safer and efficient payment mode, and brings more business. The merchant establishment pays a fee to the bank that enrolled it for the service. The Transaction When you use a card at an establishment to purchase a product or service, your card is swiped on a swipe-machine. The swipe machine is connected to a central computer belonging to the network, which in turn is connected to all issuing banks. The system verifies with your issuing bank whether you have sufficient credit to cover the purchase in a few seconds, and approves or rejects the transaction. As soon as approval comes through, you are asked to sign the charge slip. The merchant then verifies your signature with the one at the back of the card. The charge slip is then forwarded to the acquiring bank, which in turn settles the transaction with the merchant. The issuing bank also proceeds to bill you for payment as per the cardholder agreement. The acquiring bank will settle the transaction with your issuing bank through the network. Sounds pretty straightforward? Then you're wondering why credit cards are such accursed instruments? That happens when you delay payments and get caught in an interest cycle. When you use a credit card you have the option to pay only a part of the total amount spent and carry forward the balance. But in such a case you will have to pay interest on all your purchases without any free credit period. You can save yourself only if you are prompt in paying the balance by the due date. Credit card users get a free period of credit before they reimburse the credit card issuing bank. This may vary from 15-40 days depending on the issuing
banks. So that concludes our session on How Credit Cards Work. If you're now looking for information on How Snow Leopards Mate then you're on the wrong site my friend! THERE are a lot of hidden costs on that credit card you own and if you aren't watchful enough, your monthly statement may shock you. Here is a checklist on when and how your lender can slash you with charges. You have an overdue payment If you don't settle the minimum amount due by the due date, you would end up paying a late payment fee. This fee varies from bank to bank. What if you don't pay your minimum amount due for two consecutive months? You become a defaulter. The course of action after that depends on the outstanding amount on your card and past track record. The bank will assign you a risk score, depending on which, the collection strategy changes. Also, any further transactions on your card will be blocked. You revolve your balance Banks give you this option to pay a minimum amount by the due date and carry forward the rest to the next billing period. In this case, you will pay an interest on the amount that you carry forward. There's another catch: when you carry a balance from month to month, you do not get any 'interest free' period on new purchases you make. Your payment cheque bounces If you pay your bill by cheque and it bounces, you would have to bear a fee for dishonoured cheques. Also, if this payment is made very close to or after the due date, you might be in for more trouble.
The bank may not only increase your risk profile but also beyond the due date, you will have to bear all sorts of charges. This means, a fee for a bounced cheque plus a late payment fee and also a monthly interest on the outstanding amount! You cross your credit limit Credit limit is the maximum amount that you can spend on your credit card, as dictated by your income profile. You can spend more than your credit limit. But wait! Be ready to pay charges if you exceed this limit, which can be as high as 5% on the exceeded amount. You transfer your balance from other cards Banks often lure us with 'zero interest' balance transfer schemes. This means you transfer your outstanding balance from one bank to another without paying interest on the balance. But, the dream run doesn't continue for long. Most banks allow a timeframe of three months, where you don't pay interest or pay a low interest on the transferred amount. But if you carry forward your balance beyond this time, be ready to shell out the bucks for interest charges. You withdraw cash using your credit card Apart from paying the regular interest of around 2.95%, you will also have to pay a one-time fee of about 2-2.5 per cent of the amount withdrawn. Moreover, the cash advance fee is higher if you withdraw from an ATM that doesn’t belong to the bank whose credit card you hold. Also, for cash withdrawals, there is no credit free period. The interest meter starts ticking away immediately. You forget to pay annual charges In case you decide not to use your credit card and don't pay the annual charges; you are in for some trouble. Remember, you need to get in touch with the bank and intimate them that you don't want the card any further. Otherwise, you will unnecessarily have to pay the annual fee and a penalty, in case you cross the due date.

Bindumadhav Thackeray b.Jaidev Thackeray c.Uddhav Thackeray 7- Profession – Cartoonist, Politician It would be difficult to describe Bal Keshav Thackeray in a set phrase. Shiv Sainiks called him Hindu Hriday Samrat (emperor who rules the hearts of Hindus), while critics used to call him a rabble rouser thriving on chauvinism and communalism. Bal Thackeray used to love using the picture of an attacking tiger adorning his walls, posters, buntings and even his party organ. On one point, even his critics agree that this man alone had the power to bring an entire metropolis to a standstill, or a multi-billion dollar film industry to its heels. Born January 23, 1926, to Keshav Sitaram Thackeray, also known as 'Prabodhankar' Thackeray, Bal Thackeray began his career as a cartoonist with the English daily The Free Press Journal in Mumbai, but left it in 1960 to form his own politicaly weekly 'Marmik'. This Diwali it’s double dhaka: Ajay Devgn’s Son of Sardar (SOS) versus Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Now, we are not comparing the two here, that is for you to do, we will simply let you know if it is worth selecting SOS as your Diwali movie choice. Directed by Ashwni Dhir (Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge), produced by Ajay Devgn and with music by Himesh Reshammiya, on the surface SOS is the film of the ‘masses’, whilst Jab Tak Hai Jaan looks to be the film of the ‘classes’. This one is a comedy potboiler, whilst the other is a romantic saga. This one is set in Punjab, whilst the other waltz’s through London. So with the comparison’s over, here is what we thought. The story in a nutshell is Sardar Devgn travels home to Punjab from the UK, to lay claim to his ancestral land. On the train journey there it is love-at-first-sight, with Sukh (Sonakshi Sinha), following which he ends up as a guest in her mad-house only to discover there is an old deadly family feud with his own, which requires his death too. The only safe option is to live-in with the enemy and the only safe haven staying within the four walls of their house, as whilst he is their ‘guest’ they will not touch him, but step outside and his life is on the line. SOS is a remake of a South Indian movie called ‘Maryada Ramanna’. Like the original, the remake also packs in action, drama, humour, songs and dances, which all equal one big masala affair, akin to Devgn’s other films of the same genre. This film falls very much into the ‘leave your brains at home’ genre.
On the acting front starting with Ajay Devgn, we have seen play the Sardar before, but this is no Legend of Bhagat Singh. Here Devgn is playful, strong and romantic all in extreme doses and delivers the right tone for the film as a whole. On Sanjay Dutt, so okay, this is no Kancha from Agneepath, nor is it Munna Bhai, but despite that Sanju Baba does exactly what is expected from him – he gets angry and he has a laugh, both convincingly. Sonali is spot on as the village belle and although is still a delight to see, she is close to becoming stereotyped and repetitive. You can easily let her off on this occasion, as she is both funny and sweet, but she does need to watch her film selections. Juhi Chawla is still an absolute delight to watch and is a warm addition to the cast. So the minus, well…with running time of around 2 hours and 20 minutes, short by some standards, SOS could have done with a bit a trimming in some places. On the music side, there are a couple of hummable tracks, mainly the beautiful ‘Bicharan’ and the fun ‘Pow Pow’, but otherwise not exactly a musical blockbuster. Directorially Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge by Ashwni Dhir was a far more superior and sophisticated product, which had some great comedy, SOS is not necessarily a step back, but definitely a step in another direction, as far as film making is concerned. In the UK we call it marmite (a food substance), you will love it, or you will hate it! Perhaps a more apt desi description is sweet or salted lassi. You either prefer sweet lassi, or you prefer salted lassi, or maybe even both. Hell, why not have a cocktail of sweet and salty! In any case that is the verdict with SOS. If you loved Wanted and Dabaang, or even Devgn’s own Golmaal series and his recent Bol Bachchan then SOS is definitely for you.
Aries (Mar. 20--Apr. 19) : Between now and the end of the year, your attention will be drawn to career and life direction. Activity in the outer world picks up speed. Authorities and others may be challenging. Be prepared to defend your initiatives. Use this time to improve your "product" or your presentation.
Libra (Sep. 23--Oct. 22) You may be learning about when is a good thing “too much” to handle. Travel is favored, along with connections per the internet or long distance contacts. Sometimes even the best of things can grow like a balloon until they take up all the space in your life. Dieters be warned to avoid tempting situations.
Taurus (Apr. 20--May 19): Warning to those on diet and exercise programs: this week it is just too easy to break training. If you mean what you've promised to yourself, don't go anywhere in which you would be in harm's way. It is a time in which you feel more outgoing and extroverted. Social life is a pleasure.
Scorpio (Oct. 23--Nov. 21) : Mars, your ruling planet, shifts your attention on the 16th to fresh territory. During the next six weeks, your activities and feelings will be intensified in the life sector related to vehicles, short distance travels, errands, communications, education, your neighborhood, and siblings. Use caution while driving because your accelerator foot may be itchy
Gemini (May 20 -- June 20) : This is a week in which much of your time and attention will be absorbed by children or lovers. You choose which is the more likely. It is possible that you will feel compelled to return to relationship(s) or project(s) left undone from the past. Changes of direction may be prominent.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 --Dec. 20) : You may discover that you are reluctant to follow through with decisions you have recently made. It is OK. It is important you think these plans over carefully. Perhaps they need to be reorganized. Meanwhile relationship and social life are in an upswing. It’s time to play.
Cancer (June 21--Jul y 21) : You have been considering how to fairly share your resources with your progeny. This week brings an epiphany that blows away all your previous ideas. You will want to generate a discussion among the group, if possible. However, do not set anything in concrete for another month. There may be more changes to come.
Capricorn ( Dec 21 -- Jan 19) : Mars, the warrior, is entering your sign this week. You want to take initiatives, fix problems, and generally take leadership. However, just for this week, these desires are countered by other planets (circumstances or people) who throw gravel in your path. Don’t give up on your goals. This is only temporary.
Leo (July 22 --Aug. 21): Give special attention to new messages or to new people who enter your life during this time. A “teacher” crosses your path in the form of a person, a book, or a message that will steer you in the next favorable direction. This is worth some research. Virgo (Aug 22--Sep. 22) : You have been considering alterations you want to make in the environment around you. Suddenly you feel the need to back out of a decision recently made. There is nothing wrong with this. It is important and worth giving a full reevaluation before you materialize changes.
Aquarius (Jan. 20--Feb. 17) : You have two clear signals, “wait” and “go”. The “wait” signal is related to vehicles, siblings, neighbors, and roommates. No matter how you push forward, you cannot make anything happen. The “go” signal suggests you need to take charge of a program or plan that will help many people move forward. Pisces (Feb. 18--Mar. 19) : Please note the lead paragraph, because Chiron is turning direct in your sign. For the next 7 months you will be given the consciousness to find better ways to care for yourself, both physically and emotionally. If you have been doing unconscious harm to yourself, the truth will come to light and give you the opportunity to be set free.
