WHAT DOES THE JAINISM EMBLEM DEPICT What is a Symbol? The purpose of a symbol is to provide an identity or image to an entity. It is basically an abstract view of the core values that uniquely identify an entity. The entities can be various things. For instance, a flag is the symbol that uniquely identifies a country and may have some special core values associated with that country. In the context of companies, a logo can be considered a symbol or emblem. In the context of religion, it becomes a bit difficult to find a unique universal symbol or emblem, partly because there are a lot more concepts and values that may not be easy to abstract in one image and also because there is not a single governing body (like the United Nations) which dictates a religion. In reality, a religion can have multiple symbols which are considered important and provide a symbolic view of various core values and concepts. It is possible for a religious symbol to have multiple meanings or may be shared among multiple religions.
society. This emblem represents the dedication and trust for the religion and the values and many important concepts to show the path to enlightenment by following the basic principles of AHIMSA (non-violence).
Fundamental Concepts The Jain emblem is composed of many fundamental concepts and symbols. If consists of a Jain emblem, crescent of the moon, three dots, the Swastika, ther om, the palm of a hand with the wheel (Chakra) inset, and an outline figure encompassing all symbols and several other symbols. Each individual symbol is also separately used in Jainism.
Jain Emblem The outline of the image represents the universe as described in Jain scriptures. It consists of three LOKS (realms). The upper portion indicates URDHAVA LOK (heaven), the middle portion indicates MADHYALOK (material world) and the lower portion indicates ADHOLOK (hell).
In 1975, during the auspicious 2500th Nirvana anniversary of Lord Mahavir Swami Ji (last Jain monk to attain moksha or enlightenment), the Jain community at large collectively chose one image as an emblem for the Jain religion. Since then, this emblem is used in almost all of the Jain magazines, wedding invitation cards, Jain festival (like kshamavani, diwali, etc.) cards, and every magazine with links to events related to Jain
The semi-circular topmost portion symbolizes SIDDHASHILA, which is a zone beyond the three realms. All of the Siddhas (liberated bodiless souls) reside on this forever, liberated from the cycle of life and death. The three dots on the top symbolizes TRIRATNA (three jewels) – Samyak Darshan (right belief), SAMYAK GYAN (right knowledge), & SAMYAK CHARITRA (right conduct). Every creature in this world can become free from the cycle of life and death. This gives the message that it is necessary to have TRIRATNA in order to attain MOKSHA.
In short, the Jain emblem represents many important concepts to show the path to enlightenment by following the basic principles of AHIMSA (non-violence), TRIRATNA (right belief, right knowledge, and right conduct) and helping others.
Aum
In the top portion, four arms of SWASTIKA symbolizes the four GATI (destiny): NARAK (demon), TRIYANCH (animal), MANUSHYA (human) and DEV (angel). It represents the perpetual nature of the universe in the MADHYALOK (material world), where a creature is destined to one of those states based on their Karmas (deeds). It also represents the four columns of the Jain Sangh (community): Sadhus, Sadhvis, Shravaks and Shravikas – monks, nuns, female and male laymen. It also represents the four characteristics of the soul: infinite knowledge (Anant Jnan), infinite perception (Anant Darshan), infinite happiness (Anant Sukh), and infinite energy (Anant Virya).
In Jainism, Aum is regarded to be a condensed form of reference to the five parameshthis, by their initials A+A+A+U+M (o3m). The Dravyasamgrah quotes a Prakrit line: ओम एका र प चपरमे ि ठनामा द पम ् त कथ म त चेत "अ रहं ता असर रा आय रया तह उव"झाया मु%णयां "oma ekākṣara pañca-parameṣṭhi-nāmā-dipam tatkabhamiti ceta "arihatā asarīrā āyariyā taha uvajjhāyā muṇiyā"
The symbol of hand in the lower portion shows fearlessness and symbolize the feeling of AHIMSA (non-violence ) towards all the creatures in this world. The circle in the middle of the hand symbolizes SAMASARA (reincarnation cycle) and the 24 spokes represents the preaching from the 24 Tirthankars (enlightened souls), which can be used to liberate a soul from the cycle or reincarnation. The meaning of the mantra at the bottom (PARSPAROGRAHO JIVANAM) is “Live and Let Live”. All creatures should help one another.
"Aum" is one syllable made from the initials of the five parameshthis. It has been said: "Arihanta, Ashiri, Acharya, Upadhyaya, Muni". In Short, 'a' + 'a' + 'ā' + 'u' + 'm' = aum a = Arihanta a = Asrira (Siddha) ā = Acharya u = Upadhyaya m = Muni (Sadhu) Thus, ओं नमः (om namah) is a short form of the Navkar Mantra.
PLAYING FIELDS
conducts BA (disciplinary) and BA (application course) along with other DU colleges.
With sports becoming a popular career choice, Let’s find out the options available
Devinder K Kansal, principal, IGIPESS and HoD, physical education and sports sciences, DU, says, “Today there are numerous avenues for those wanting to pursue physical education as a discipline in various fields from teaching, sports management, sports nutrition, physiotherapy, fitness experts, etc.” The institute is planning certificate courses for other students of the university from the academic session in 2013.
Sports, which was traditionally considered a hobby especially in India, is now being taken seriously as a career option. With the country’s medal performance in wrestling, badminton, boxing, etc at the 2012 London Olympics and with F1 coming to India, its just not cricket, which is a rage among the youth. Besides games, there are many other areas that are gaining in popularity within the ambit of sports such as medicine, management, physiotherapy, clinics, etc Schools and colleges are also encouraging sports among students. At the school level, too, sports and fitness are being taken seriously; the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a vocational course in sports on fitness and gym operation from the academic session 2012-13.
Kanika Yadav, a national level volleyball player and a final-year student of BSc in PEHES, says that studying sports has given her an edge over other sportspersons. “During the course we get specialised knowledge on current game rules, injury application, technical skills, etc,” she adds. Nilesh Kulkarni, director, International Institute of Sports Management, Mumbai, adds that there are no ‘university affiliated’ institutes offering education in courses like sports management because there is not enough awareness about the various opportunities that such a course can offer.
Delhi has produced a number of sportspersons including Unmukt Chand, U-19 cricket world cup star, who dominated the headlines recently when he was barred from sitting for the exam due to low attendance. Subsequently, he took the matter to court and it worked out in his favour. While there are several sports academies, not all universities offer physical education as a discipline, except for Delhi University. The Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education & Sports Sciences (IGIPESS), under the department of physical education, Delhi University, offers courses in physical education and sports sciences at undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD levels. The institute conducts a BSc programme in physical education, health education and sports sciences (PEHES). While at the PG level, it offers a Bachelor of physical education (BPED) programme. The institute also
Though historically cricket dominated the industry, today the country can boast of an annual sporting calendar comprising other games as well. Therefore, this has increased the employability quotient of sports. Many aspirants prefer to go abroad to pursue a degree in sports, as there are more study options available. “Since sports as a field of study is underdeveloped in India, I decided to go overseas to study the subject. I studied Master’s in sport management at the Loughborough University. I am a national-level table tennis player and I always aspired to pursue a career in the field of sport development,” says Aman Dhall, who on completing his studies launched a highperformance sports academy in India. Responding to the need to take a multidisciplinary approach to sports, Chennaibased Ramachandra
University has introduced a BSc degree in sports and exercise sciences. The course, offered by the College of Allied Health Sciences of the university in association with the University of Cape Town, would begin formal instruction from 2013.
“There exists a misconception about the definition of sports medicine in India,” says Sivaraman Arumugam, head, department of arthroscopy and sports medicine, “One of the more recent responsibilities that sports medicine has had to undertake is to improve on-field performance.” With the globalisation of sport and the entry of several league-based tournaments like the IPL, most teams are involving coaches and sports medicine practitioners. “We as a nation are lacking in an organised and scientific approach to performance assessment. That is where academic expertise in sports and exercise sciences come in handy,” he adds. R Mahesh, first year student of Master of physical education (MPEd) at Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University (TNPESU), says, “The university ensures that students are given the latest in terms of instruction, facilities and academia. In the first year, we choose from a list of track and field games, while in the second year we select a game we want to specialise in.” Looking at the statistics, G Ravindran, dean of academics, University of Madras, says that the percentage of the university’s sports quota stands at a meagre 2%. But when you consider the fact that 2% is actually 4,000 students, the number does not seem small.
Haryana is another sports hub. The state boasts of several athletes who compete both nationally and internationally. Some of the universities — Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak; Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, etc, offer programmes in physical education at Bachelor’s, Master and PhD level. - With Inputs from Vatsala Shrangi, Delhi; Jude Sannith S, Chennai and Gauri Rane, Mumbai > EXPERT VOICE Radhica Sreeman, regional director (teams), Sports Authority of India (SAI), says, “A lot more students are aspiring for a career in sports these days because it is both fashionable and feasible now. The infrastructure, equipment and foreign exposure available at present are being upgraded as the government has been investing a lot of money since the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in 2010.”
SHOE HANGER
Cut off the bottom section of the hanger like so:
Say you don't like the "mountain" storage method. Say you need to get your mound o' 'flops off the floor and into a tidy system, but are limited on space. What then? Well, how about this?
You may need to score the metal with the pliers and then snap it with your hands. Now take your pliers and roll up the two edges, like this:
This was a no-cost solution last year: a left over curtain rod mounted on two shelf brackets, and lots of modified hangers. For the rod you could also use a wooden dowel, piece of PVC pipe, or any other strong bit of metal. To mount it we bent up the tips of two metal shelf brackets and secured the rod with small screws, but you could also use conventional closet rod hangers, which you can find in any hardware store.
This gets the sharp edges safely out of the way, and also looks kind of cute. Now, using both your hands and your pliers, bend your hanger into this approximate shape:
Now, the fun part is the actual hangers. Here's how to make them:
Kind of like a stick figure flexing his muscles. :)
First, grab a handful of the flimsiest metal hangers you can find in your closet. (You want to be able to bend them with your hands, if possible.) You'll also need a pair of needle-nosed pliers.
Now, to be honest, you could just stop here. I did, for over a year. The hangers are perfectly functional, if a bit chippy and drab.
I recently went back and decided to pretty them up, though. First I put a fresh coat of spray paint on them:
flipping it over like this to trim off the excess ribbon. When you're done, your hanger should look like this:
And then I found some gorgeous teal, orange, and red ribbon - though it took me a little while to figure out a way to use it. In the end, I came up with this cute little hanger jacket:
Again, you could stop there, but I thought a red button was the perfect cherry on top for mine:
And here they are, hanging in a row: Here's how you make it:
Actually I have even more than this, but I didn't want to hang them all up because then you'd know I have that many flip-flops and it'd be, like, totally embarrassing. Make sure your ribbon is snug, so it doesn't fall off the hanger. To secure it you can use fabric or super glue - or, if the glue stains the ribbon like mine did, glue dots also work really well. Step 6 shows the backside of the hanger. I suggest
Here's how the 'flops hang:
your judging pleasure - a glimpse inside my closet:
I never could get all the sides quite even. :/ And now en masse:
Hey! It's, like, neat and stuff!
Plus, here's a handy bonus: you can also hang your ballerina flats on these!
I had to use a wide-angle lens to get this; it's pretty cramped in there. As you can see, when I'm not wearing flip-flops I'm wearing little boy's sneakers or boots. (I loooove boots.) I think the last time I wore a pair of heels was our Christmas cruise, but at least they look pretty on the shelves. ;)
And finally, since I spent the better part of an evening cleaning it out, allow me to present - for

Strawberry Frozen Yogurt Recipe Best to eat it on the same day as you make it, as it will get icy if it stays in the freezer for more than 8 hours. If you want it to last longer and not get icy, add a tablespoon of vodka or kirsch to the mixture right before churning. INGREDIENTS • 3 cups sliced fresh strawberries • 3 Tbsp lemon juice • 2/3 cup to 1 cup sugar (depending on how sweet you want the result, and how sweet your strawberries are to begin with) • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup whole milk • 1 1/2 cups full fat yogurt (if use low or non fat, then add 2 Tbsp cream)
Ingredients • • • • • • •
Yogurt Saffron (kesar) Milk Almonds Pistachios Sugar Green cardamom powder
2 kilograms 7 - 8 strands 2 tablespoons 1/4 cup 1/4 cup to taste 1 1/4 teaspoons
Method Hang yogurt in a muslin cloth, in a refrigerator until all the liquid from the yogurt has drained off. (Approximately three hours.)
METHOD
Dissolve saffron in warm milk and set aside.
1 Place the strawberries, lemon juice, salt, and sugar in a medium saucepan. Heat on medium heat, stirring, until the sugar has completely dissolved. Use a potato masher to mash up the strawberries as the mixture is heating. As soon as all of the sugar has completely dissolved, remove from heat and let sit for 10 minutes.
Blanch almonds, cool and cut into slivers.
2 Stir in the milk and yogurt, until completely incorporated. Place the mixture in the refrigerator, and chill for at least an hour, preferably several hours, until completely cold, before proceeding. 3 Process the mixture in your ice cream maker 20 to 25 minutes. Eat immediately or keep in freezer until served.
Cut pistachios into slivers and powder sugar. Tie a clean muslin cloth tightly over the mouth of a large clean vessel. The muslin cloth thus acts as a sieve and should not sag in the middle. Use a clean thick string to tie the cloth over the vessel. Transfer the thick yogurt along with the sugar over the muslin cloth, in small quantities. For every cup of thick yogurt, add three fourth cup of sugar. Rub the above mixture firmly over the cloth, till the whole mixture is sieved. Add the dissolved saffron, almonds, pistachios and green cardamom powder to the sieved mixture. Mix well and transfer to a glass bowl and refrigerate till cold.
ANDROID IS TAKING OFF IN INDIA. Thanks to a wide range of Android phones available from Rs. 5000 to Rs. 30000, the appetite for Android apps is wide spread. Market place is littered with apps for cricket, Bollywood, news, utility and mosquito repellents. There are close to 1200 Android apps for ‘India’ and only a handful of them are really useful. These top 10 apps & 5 Games are what have surfaced to the top either through downloads or through user ratings. AppBrain, an alternative market place rates these apps based on popularity.
Top 10 Android apps in India
BookMyShow (BMS) is a movie ticket booking app, a mobile counterpart to the already popular website. The app has provision to book tickets for not just movies but events like sports, arts and theatre. Unfortunately these are work under progress and not available right now. BMS’s movie section works absolutely fine and is what you expect from a ticket booking site. BMS app works on all Android phones and has seen anywhere between 10000 – 50000 app downloads. The app is free and has a memory footprint of 718 kb. Indian Rail Info app provides exactly what it says. It gives an interface to check PNR status, check trains, check seat availability, train finders and fare enquiry. You can’t book tickets with this app. The app has seen 50,000 – 100000 app downloads and has a average user rating of 4.5 as rated by 1281 people. Popularity of this app befuddles me.
An utility app for sure, but most of its popularity is derived from the popularity of Indian railways itself. Alas there are quite a few rail apps, I wonder who this particular app shot to the limelight. Indian Rail PNR status This is the second app on the list related to Railways and this app provides nothing but the PNR status. The USP of this app in their description is “This app stores the PNR and shows up when you are typing next time.” Given an which provides more information than just the PNR status, I fail to understand the success of this app. There are 5000-10000 downloads already for this app. PNR status can be achieved by sending a simple sms with pnr number to 97733-00000. Zomato is a food guide app for your city. Select your city, your favorite cuisine and you will be provided with options. There is a Discover feature too which provides you with a random restaurant. Just shake the phone and pick the restaurant. The app also provides information about the restaurant and a phone number to call from within the app itself. Pretty cool app for food connoisseurs and the hungry birds. The app works for Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Jaipur Ahmedabad and Chandigarh. I tried it for Bangalore and it works just fine. The app isn’t a location based app. TazzaGo is probably the only local app you might ever need. It is a location based app which finds out your location from your GPS broadcast and provides you with a bouquet of services including news, deals, and other services. The news stream is from various news sources providing you with the local news. Deals are from Snapdeal, MyDala, Koovs and few others. The most nifty utility of the app is its Places utility which gives you a search option to look for places you want to explore – restaurants, pubs, theaters etc…
No surprise here. Moneycontrol has become the premier destination for all things stocks. Its Android app is nothing short of that. The app provides various indices in India and across the world along with bullion market updates. There is a facility to search for a scrip and look at its market price and other details. Mumbai Taxi and Rickshaw card A Mumbai only app shows the correct fare/tariff for Mumbai taxi cabs and auto rickshaws. There is a provision to note the offending drivers name and license plate number and also a help line number to call for complaints. BollywoodJi : News & Photos BollywoodJi is a free app which brings you the latest bollywood news, gossips, movie reviews and much more. There is no dearth of bollywood apps in the market. This app has surfaced to the app amongst other Bollywood apps which is a significant achievement. Hungama has attempted to release two Bollywood Android apps which are buggy. 160by2 : Free SMS Online free SMS service has a mobile presence. 160by2 is a free SMS service which lets you send free SMS’s with a catch. You get to use 80 characters only and the rest is used by 160by2 to display ads. Its Android app works much the same way. Given the fact that the app works on GPRS, the cost advantage of sending an SMS over Internet might erode.
Indian Railway Schedule Yet another with a Indian railways theme. Not much to say here and the app does pretty much the same things as other apps.
10 SURE-SHOT WAYS TO SAVE MONEY & IMPROVE YOUR FINANCES One of the quickest ways to improve your finances is to reduce your spending and find more ways to save money. Unfortunately, there are still many people around who find it difficult to save, most of the times putting the blame on their 'insufficient' income. This is, however, not true as various studies have already proved that how much you save has little to do with how much you make. If you are also among those who usually find it hard to save, there are some innovative and sureshot ways which can help you save more and also improve your financial health in line with your goals.
to the 'no buy' time might include paying for medicines, food and emergencies that come up like a car breaking down. "Save the money you would have normally spent during the day or week you are on the 'no buy' break and invest that amount by the end of the month," says Navlakhi.
1. Stick to the budget: One of the surest ways to cut your spending and save more is sticking to the monthly budget and resorting to forced savings. This system always works, regardless of the kind of job you have or your income.
3. Avoid buying on impulse: Do you often purchase something and then get it home to find you aren't excited about it any longer? It happens with most of us. Therefore, if you are in the habit of spending on impulse, make an effort to have a moment of reflection before buying anything. "If you see something you would like to buy, try waiting a day or two before actually committing yourself to buying. If you really want it, you will come back. This will not only help you save more money, but also give you the chance to find other things that may be better," says Atul Surana, certified financial planner and MD of Mangalorebased CatalystFinancial Planning.
Giving an example, Lovaii Navlakhi, MD & chief financial planner, International Money Matters Pvt Ltd, says that he knows of a client who segregates her monthly expenses in envelopes, for example, for groceries, eating out, fuel costs for two wheelers, etc. If the family decides to go out at the end of the month, the venue is dependent on what amount is left in the 'eating out' envelope. Similarly, the children may resort to travelling by bus if the 'fuel costs' have run out. This way they are able to budget their expenses and save as per their goals.
4. Avoid spending by habit: Quite often a lot of our spending is a daily habit. However, this spending could easily be unnecessary. For example, if you buy a takeaway coffee everyday for your office staff / visitors, why not invest in a coffee machine? "Just because you spend Rs 200 a day on lunch, doesn't mean this habit has to continue forever. Try taking your own lunch. Reevaluate all your habitual spending patterns and decide whether it is necessary," says Surana. This will help you cut your unnecessary spending and save more.
2. Take a 'no buy' day or week: Another important way to help with saving money and keeping a quality budget is 'spending freezes'. This means for the entire time of the 'no buy' break, you aren't allowed to buy anything new, or to go shopping. Exceptions
5. Pay yourself first: This may sound strange, but 'paying yourself first' - a phrase originally coined by George S. Clason in his book 'Richest Man in Babylon' -- is also one of the best ways to save more. Although many of us might have heard of it, only a few of us actually do it. For those who are still not aware of this phrase, paying yourself first means the first bill you pay each month
Here we take a look at some of them:
should be to yourself, simply because you have worked for it and deserve it the most. Thus, before you pay your bills, before you buy groceries, before you do anything else, set aside a portion of your paycheck or income to save - say, 5 or 10% or whatever you decide. Then deposit the amount into a savingsaccount before paying your monthly bills. A great way to do this is to set up a savings, investment or retirement account that will directly route it from your salary account every month.
6. Pay your bills on time: You can also end up with a substantial chunk of extra cash every month just by paying your bills, particularly credit card bills, on time. To take an example, if you have six credits cards and you are delaying their payments, then you may have to fork out close to Rs 5,000 every month in late fees alone. However, if you save Rs 5,000 every month andinvest it in an absolutely safe instrument, which gives 8% return compounded annually, you will amass over Rs 1 crore in just 35 years. Now assume how much you would be able to save just by taking care of such 'little' things! 7. Cut out junk food from your diet: Junk food is expensive and eliminating it can save a lot of money. Start with small things like potato chips, soft drinks or sugary cereals and then move onto pastries & pizzas/burgers etc. "None of these things are very healthy for you and you'll be saving a lot of money each month. Keep a track of the amount you spend on junk food. Consciously keep aside that amount and invest it at the end of the month," says Navlakhi. This way you can ensure that you become healthy and also have savings to show for it.
8. Quit smoking: If you are a smoker and are looking to quit, then you should keep aside the money for every cigarette that you do not smoke. If 1 cigarette costs Rs 5, then keep aside Rs 10 as a reward for not smoking. If you usually smoke 1 pack a day, then you would effectively set aside Rs 6,000 in a month if you successfully manage to quit smoking completely. You will feel really good about yourself when you see the amount that you have saved by not smoking. 9. Watch movies at home: It is very expensive these days to watch movies outside. If you are a regular movie goer, then you would be spending quite a bit each month watching the movies outside. These days even blockbusters are shown on TV just some time after their release or you could buy a DVD. But keep aside the money that you save by watching it at home and invest that amount at the end of the month. 10. Avoid having unused memberships: You might be a member of that elite club, but do you also have enough time and resources to go there and enjoy your life as some spendthrifts do? Or are you getting your money's worth out of that costly gym membership? If not, then why to join such clubs or become a gym member at all? Thus, there are lots of such things which look very simple and people generally don't care about them as they think resorting to such small things may result into vary small savings and are thus avoidable. That is, however, not true. We can, in fact, end up with a substantial chunk of extra cash every month and over years just by following these simple tips!
REVIEW OF LIFE OF A PI
STAR CAST Aamir Khan.... Surjan Singh Sekhawat Kareena Kapoor.... Rosy Rani Mukerji.... Shreya Bondre Raj Kumar Yadav.... Devrath Kulkarni Nawazuddin Siddiqui Shernaz Patel Vivek Madan Subrat Dutta Suhasi Goradia Dhami
WHAT'S THE MOVIE ABOUT : Seeing reflections of Mumbai under the red light, Talaash is a tale of love lost, fatal attraction and above all the quest to solve a perfect crime. Suspense at its core, Talaash explores Mumbai's underbelly like never before. Aamir Khan plays an investigation officer, Inspector Shekhawat who receives a phone call early in the morning informing him about death and an accident and how everything starts to unfold from there. The case turns into a life altering chase for Inspector Shekhawat when he is forced to reel under the repercussions of a broken married life with wife Roshni played by Rani Mukherji and come face to face with his suppressed grief. Being on his investigative quest and fighting it out with personal struggle, Inspector Shekhawat meets a sex worker Rosie played by Kareena Kapoor who further adds shades of mystery to the puzzle. What looks like a simple car accident investigation turns into a haunting mystery as further investigations show many anomalies were stringed to the death of the victim.
The story is told by a grown up Pi Patel (Irrfan Khan) in flashback to a writer (Rafe Spall). The young Pi, son of an Indian zoo owner, is a confused kid. He is fascinated by different religions but doesn't quite know which one to follow. He is moving to Canada [ Images ] with his father (Adil Hussain), mother (Tabu [ Images ]) and his brother (Ayan Khan) along with all the animals from their zoo when a terrible storm in the Pacific changes everything. Pi survives the storm along with a few animals -- an orangutan, a hyena, a zebra and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Eventually, only Pi and Richard are left on the small lifeboat. Pi has to survive by saving himself from the hostile tiger. The relationship between Pi and the Richard is complicated. There is fear, love, compassion and tolerance. He has to keep feeding the tiger, be it fish or just clean water to avoid being eaten himself. This struggle for a peaceful co-existence makes up for the most of the film. A lot of it is the work of animation and is done very well. Suraj Sharma in the role of young Pi delivers a fantastic performance, you feel for the boy stranded in the middle of the sea. Tabu, who plays Pi's mother has a short role but she plays it very well. Irrfan, as always, is remarkable. His expressions make the narrative more believable but his accent is weird and confusing. In Life Of Pi, it's the relationship between a tiger and a boy and how they learn to get along that is heartwarming. The different ways the stranded duo resort to to survive shows that Lee has an eye for detail. Rest of the job has been ably handled by the digital effects department. The whale, the dolphins, the flying fish and the glowing jelly fish are magical and add to the experience. However, at 128 minutes, the film is a tad lengthy. Tighter editing would have ensured that it doesn't drag in parts. In the end though, Life of Pi is a one of its kind visual experience.
Bestselling author Chetan Bhagat in a freewheeling chat about all the things that matter -- and some that don't.
time ago that I, the person, will not be there on Twitter. Twitter is merely a platform for opinions and some of them are strong and some of them are loose (sic). But Twitter is not the place where you'll get to know me better.
Chetan Bhagat often evokes extreme reactions. Author of five bestselling books, he is known to have an opinion on practically every matter that does or should concern us. In doing so, he often come across as being somewhat arrogant and sometimes flippant.
People may think that I am being impulsive or rash, but I know exactly what I am doing. I have the ability to turn passionate and the ability to turn dispassionate when I want. Perhaps this comes from the spiritual practice and yoga I do. When I am doing something I can be very emotional about it but (at the same time) I can be very detached. So, when I am giving my opinion, I am merely giving my opinion. Nothing is personal on Twitter.
Those who know him say he is a fairly easygoing person. He isn't half as aggressive as he comes across on television debates and on Twitter. This, however, doesn't stop him from saying things that make him sound presumptuous. At one point in this interview he says, 'Because of me God's name has been taken hundreds of millions of times'. On the flipside though, I cannot ignore a certain element of earnestness in him. It is this earnestness, I suppose, that helps him reach out to millions of readers across the country. In this two-part interview, Chetan Bhagat does what he does best -- talking on a wide range of topics, from his confrontational image to his stand on the Salman Rushdie controversy and the authors that he turns to. In a recent interview, Amish Tripathi mentioned that you're a chilled out and peaceful guy. But the Chetan Bhagat we see on television and on Twitter is a very different person. It is almost schizophrenic... (Laughs) Wow! That is a big word but I think people often ascribe a personality based on a few data points, and I am saying this in general, not just about me. So, based on someone's tweets you tend to ascribe a personality to him/her. I made a decision a long
Those opinions are genuine they are not fake. But you cannot get to know me better on Twitter. It is not a real space. It is a virtual world and I find too many people putting their very intimate feelings out there. I've seen people saying on social networks: 'I am feeling hurt' or 'I am feeling lonely'. Television debates are frankly something I avoid. For every 20 invites I get, I go to one. I find that format very confrontational and it can give out a vibe that the person is an argumentative guy. But that's just because that's the nature of the programme. When you put eight people in a room and against each other, it's difficult to come across as Mr Congeniality... So, I think you are seeing just one facet of me through my tweets or opinions on politicians or issues and on television. Even work-wise it is just a part of me. And personality-wise it has little to do with me.
As a person, I believe in not taking things too seriously; I believe in laughing a lot; I believe in keeping things fun; I believe that nothing can't be worked out over a good joke. But that's not the place to do it. In fact almost any opinion I have given, I am flexible to change on that but, yes, I can make my point and I will continue to do so when I feel (like it). You seem to enjoy the confrontation... I enjoy it because I seem to be the only guy there who isn't taking it seriously. The other debaters are so charged up emotionally and so fixed in their views that they aren't able to enjoy it. It's just a TV debate. It's different people discussing their points of view. You don't need to come out a winner. There is no prize at the end of it. And that's why I am able to enjoy it. I do not believe in the 'for' and 'against' the motion debates that we've learnt in school. I think there is no such thing as for and against the motion. As a storyteller you learn that everyone has a point of view and you cannot say one person's point of view is right. The winner has to be the issue. So, do you put on an act? No, but I know I am not supposed to take it too seriously. We are just people's dinner entertainment. It's not a place where policies are being made. You don't make policies in TV debates. You mentioned earlier that contrary to public opinion you know exactly what you're tweeting. Would you say your tweets are calculated? I wouldn't say that, but they are done with a bit of self-awareness. In the past, years ago, I may have been more casual about the medium and not have understood it. And a lot of early adopters of Twitter have had those issues... I may be a writer, but not every thought of mine is pure gold. I have some good thoughts, I have some medium thoughts and I have some stupid thoughts. And if you share things with people, every now and then you will say things that don't
make a lot of sense. Frankly, that's okay. That's the new celebrity, one who isn't Mr Perfect. And, in fact, people who are trying to keep that image, especially on social networks, will suffer more. I haven't put up a facade of ego. But, yes, the tweets are more planned than people might think. Do you filter your tweets? No, but I know what I am doing. However, I do take care to word it properly. I do let go also sometimes on nonserious issues. Luckily I have this image of being a guy who can be serious as well as non-serious. Sometimes it backfires, at other times it doesn't. I've learnt to not let it affect me so much... Okay, we'll come back to Twitter later... About your books...you've probably been asked this but why do all your books have numbers in their titles? I think it's just a tribute to my past when I was a banker and engineer. When I was in a bank all I dealt with was numbers. I miss my banking sometimes... Really? Yes. Sometimes I do. Especially at times when there are exciting things happening (in the finance markets) like now, when the Facebook IPO is being launched. I miss my banking colleagues with whom I could discuss valuations and whether to subscribe or not. Of course I can Google all of that, but there's nothing like being in the bank and analysing how the financial markets react when the IPO is launched etc. There are some exciting moments in finance and I do miss them. Name three moments when you wished you were in a bank. Well, there's the Facebook IPO right now. I downloaded the prospectus just for the fun of it. And I realised that I was reading a financial document after almost four years. I would also love to know more about the Eurozone crisis and also the subprime crisis. I left around the time it was happening so I couldn't really absorb it fully. Another thing about my books is that the protagonist is named after Lord Krishna.
Aries (Mar. 20--Apr. 19) : Your warrior self is front and center during this period. The best use of this energy is on behalf of the Greater Good or for another person who needs a champion. Use that energy with thoughtful intentionality. Your reflexes may be off kilter. Ground your adrenalin rush with heavy exercise. Taurus (Apr. 20--May 19): Venus, your ruling planet, has entered the 7th house of relationships. She brings improvements in clientele, social life, and partnerships. It is possible that you will be considering the possibility of taking your primary relationship to the next level of commitment. It is a very good time to heal relationship wounds. Gemini (May 20 -- June 20) : This Mercury retrograde experience is occurring in the territory of health, coworkers, tenants, employees, and pets. You may have found it very hard to progress with your diet and exercise program. As Mercury shifts into forward gear at the end of the week, activities in these areas of life will improve. Cancer (June 21--Jul y 21) : Early in Nov. we experienced a new moon eclipse in your 5th house of children/play/love affairs. Next week there is a full moon eclipse in your 12th (hidden) house. You are somehow caught between the need to play, be open, and a deeper need to keep your secrets to yourself. It may feel tumultuous, but the intensity will decrease during December. Leo (July 22 --Aug. 21): You may be surprised to discover something about yourself or your money/debts that you have been avoiding. We are all in denial sometimes. Don’t waste time on a guilt trip. Now that you know, it is time to face the facts and collect the threads of a solution. Virgo (Aug 22--Sep. 22) : This Mercury retrograde has been focused specifically on communications, neighbors, siblings, and others who are in your daily environment. Your car might have needed attention. As the retrograde energy shifts directions you will be less likely to have problems with communications and can move forward with greater ease.
Libra (Sep. 23--Oct. 22) Events of this week trigger your sense of compassion and draw you into the desire to assist in the healing of another. As you live into this experience, you will discover that having compassion also heals you. Your spirit is lifted. Don’t ignore the call. Scorpio (Oct. 23--Nov. 21) : Plan to work and play alone during this period. You likely will be feeling restless and generally tense. Your patience could be short and you might say things you'll wish you hadn't. You have a desire to break free from restraints. If that inner warrior overtakes your thoughts, use it to help someone who needs your courage. Sagittarius (Nov. 22 --Dec. 20) : The sun returns "home" to your sign this week. You likely will find it to be energizing. Now is the time to focus on new plans for this next year of your life. Take a fresh look at where you want to direct your energy. It is likely that you are making travel plans. Capricorn ( Dec 21 -- Jan 19) : Drive and use tools carefully this week. You may be subject to accident. You might be feeling that now is the time to take a plunge related to family, home, or other property. Take one step back. Let the intensity cool off for a week and see if that is what you really need to do. Aquarius (Jan. 20--Feb. 17) : Ignore the water cooler talk. People just want to gossip this week. In general they are agitated and want you to join the bandwagon. This wastes a lot of energy. Keep your eyes on your direction in life and don’t allow distractions. It is possible that a new business acquaintance will become a long term friend. Pisces (Feb. 18--Mar. 19) : Developments in your career or life direction may cause you to feel ineffective this week. Don’t allow this one experience to alter your self definition. You are an intuitive person who can almost always assist others to feel better. But you cannot accomplish this goal if the Other does not want to feel better.
