CONG R ATU L AT I O N S
From Mayor Charlie Clark I can’t think of another time where we lived with this same kind of complicated combination: On one hand we have such a strong and growing sense of opportunity and possibility in our city and we are taking a larger and more important place in the world, while at the same time, we are living in a time of complexity and uncertainty. It is driven by the impacts of inflation, of addictions, mental health, homelessness, heightened political polarization and increasing global conflict and instability. Nights like this are very important to come together. So we can celebrate these stories of the people behind the businesses and organizations, who have been persevering and innovating and building success here. The success that is making us the fastest growing economy in the country. And as time has gone on it has been so great to see the increased diversity of people being recognized and celebrated. Our city is more diverse than it has ever been and will only become more diverse. This will only help us continue to innovate and grow and become even more of a destination city. So, back to the innovators of tonight. Thank you. And just as importantly, thank you to the people around you who have supported you in your achievements.
Mayor Charlie Clark, City of Saskatoon Every two weeks I do a bit with Sheri and Woody on Rock 102 – Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. I always wonder if anyone is sitting there bleary-eyed listening to Godsmack, Motley Crue or AC/DC at that time of the day – but we carry on. Woody brings a different lead in to our segment every morning and let’s just say it makes me really want to be able to peer into that man’s brain and figure out what is actually going on in there. Thank you to Phil and Dallas Boyer for the jig to kick us off, filling up this space with the beautiful sounds of the Métis fiddle that have rung through this land for generations.
One of the themes I have heard consistently in the acceptance speeches of award winners in the past, is the importance of nurturing and supporting your teams – the people who are your companies and organizations – as well as your spouses and families that are the foundation that make it possible to do what we do. Sarah is here tonight, and she plays such a big role for me in helping keep me sane and able to get up and take on whatever this job throws at me. So to all of you who are here, whether the CEO, founder, the front line staff, the family member, the friend. Congratulations and thank you for what you do – and what you are doing to create opportunity, to build success here in Saskatoon.
On October 30th I was so heartened to see so many people from so many walks of life come together once again for the Rock your Roots Walk.
I believe the more that we can see our community as a family, our neighbours as people who we want to build up and support the same way we support each other on our teams – anything is possible in our city.
And for the Saskatoon Tribal Council hosted Pow Wow, as we work to deepen relationships and our work on Truth and Reconciliation in our community.
This is core to the Treaty teaching of Wâhkôhtowin– seeing each other as relatives.
Thanks to the Chamber for your leadership on this as well. Having business voices walk the talk makes a real difference. And thanks to you Jason and the Chamber team for all your work bringing this event together. I’m not going to lie, it has been a pretty wild time to be the Mayor of Saskatoon.

HALL OF FAME AWARD
Saskatoon Business College
McKercher LLP presents the Hall of Fame Award to Saskatoon Business College
Saskatoon's commercial landscape is kept alive by its community of diverse businesses driven by their talented employees. The Saskatoon Business College (SBC) stands as a testament to over a century of both business and educational excellence. Over the years, thousands of SBC alums have been propelled into the workforce, sparking meaningful careers and becoming driving forces behind numerous businesses in Saskatoon and beyond. The SBC is a clear showcase of a successful and instrumental business supporting the growth of Saskatoon's overall business community. In recognition of its contributions to our city and province, Saskatoon Business College was the latest inductee into the SABEX Business Hall of Fame this year. Tracing the Journey SBC's humble beginnings date back to when E.A. Marshall, a prominent local businessman, started the school in 1907. Opening its doors with a learning focus on secretarial arts and accounting, SBC established itself as a pinnacle of post-secondary business education in the community. As the leadership of the College transferred to the Chapman Family in 1951, the seeds of their enduring ethos—love for the city, passion for business, and dedication to helping others flourish—were sown.

Nurturing Tomorrow's Business Workforce and Leaders
“Unfortunately, my dad died five years after taking control of the college, so my mother, along with some very talented women, carried on and made it what it is today,” explains Barry Chapman, SBC Owner (1966-2003). Since 1960, SBC has offered training from its 25,000-square-foot location on Third Avenue. "Saskatoon Business College (SBC) was led by my grandparents, Helen and Fred Chapman, and then by my parents, Barry and Joan Chapman, until my brother, Rich, and I took the lead. Both my grandparents and my parents had a passion for providing high-quality education and for putting students first. We have continued their legacy and adhered to their vision to this day,” Says Blair Chapman, SBC Campus Director. Evolving With the Times Recognizing the varied needs of today’s learners, SBC offers flexible learning options to accommodate our rapidly changing world. Whether students prefer traditional on-campus classes, modern hybrid learning, or fully online courses, SBC is geared towards meeting its pupils' diverse preferences and schedules. Today, the college offers a dynamic range of business education, diploma courses, corporate training, and online learning. SBC is committed to fortifying three fundamental verticals: academic achievements, robust literacy, and Microsoft Office Suite technical skills across all programs.
Training at SBC extends beyond basic programs, including advanced Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud applications, and Quickbooks, to name some of the most popular software. Additionally, they offer Microsoft technical courses catering to the dynamic needs of modern business environments. Since 2017, they’ve broadened their scope to include Microsoft Cloud licensing, allowing users access to Microsoft 365, Azure, Dynamics 365, and beyond—an upgrade aligning with current technological trends.
contributing to Saskatoon professionally and culturally. While they are proud of their history, their eyes are fixed on the endless possibilities that lie ahead. “Our mission is to provide the highest quality education and training that is current, challenging, and relevant to the global marketplace. We are constantly evolving to ensure we are providing our students with training so they can succeed in the ever-evolving business world,” says Rich Chapman, SBC Admissions Director.
Beyond the technical business training, SBC also teaches students job search skills and helps graduates secure employment whenever possible. “We didn’t guarantee jobs, but the students understood that our track record was such that if they worked hard and graduated, in all likelihood, the College would find them a job,” recalls Barry.
Final Thoughts “I’m very proud of our history in this city and our roots. With our family’s work through the decades and our focus on quality education, we’ve helped change lives,” says Blair.
And over the years, SBC has also emerged as a strong community partner. For example, for 35 years in a row, the College supported “Shinerama,” an event organized in colleges and universities nationwide with students’ participation in fundraising efforts to fight Cystic Fibrosis.
Saskatoon Business College's story is intertwined with the fabric of Saskatoon. Their future promises to be as impactful as their past as they continue to shape tomorrow's workforce and business leaders. SBC’s induction into the SABEX Business Hall of Fame reaffirms the commendable legacy the college and the Chapman family have built.

Looking Ahead With times changing quickly, SBC is looking towards the future with plans to stay relevant. They pledge to advance with the digital age, increase their online learning footprint, and continue
“This SABEX Hall of Fame award hits home. It’s nice to know that you’re being recognized in the community and that what you do makes a difference in people’s lives. This award validates our drive for continuous improvement and growth, our dedication to our students and corporate partners,” concludes Rich.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT AWARD
Saskatchewan Blue Cross
Health and wellness at the core of Saskatchewan Blue Cross’ philosophy Saskatchewan Blue Cross has been a trusted, not-for-profit health benefits provider for over 75 years. Established in 1946 by seven doctors who envisaged equal access to vital healthcare services, it has evolved into a comprehensive life and wellness benefits organization, providing service to about 200,000 customers. The socially-inclined organization is founded on the principles of community and trust and strives to create purposeful impact and serve community needs. This philosophy guides their Community Investment program and its three main areas of focus: Health Literacy, Community Health and Wellbeing, and Diversity and Inclusion. Over the years, the company has partnered with over 200 local charitable organizations with complementary goals to advance community health and wellness actively.
Health Literacy refers to how well people understand and can navigate the healthcare system. Saskatchewan Blue Cross believes that thriving communities are built on a foundation of good health and that empowering individuals to make informed decisions is vital to enhancing their well-being. "Our destination has always been clear - a healthier, more prosperous Saskatchewan, where everyone enjoys equal access to essential health services," shares Kelly Wilson, President and CEO of Saskatchewan Blue Cross. "Today, we're investing heavily in Health Literacy. By arming our communities with knowledge, we're empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. This transformative journey is particularly impactful in addressing the unique needs of newcomers, Indigenous communities, the actively aging, and our youth,” adds Kelly. In 2022, Saskatchewan Blue Cross initiated its journey through partnerships with various community groups, addressing specific population needs. The organization bolsters overall community health and well-being by constructing culturally sensitive, group-specific health literacy initiatives. In the future, Saskatchewan Blue Cross aspires to cultivate a healthier and more prosperous Saskatchewan. Its focus is a society where individuals are equipped with the requisite knowledge to make informed health decisions, sealed in their journey to living a healthy and fulfilling life.

Saskatchewan Blue Cross is embarking on a transformative journey, embracing change and growth to serve their communities better. Throughout the company’s history, they have prioritized investing in community wellness, and they now have defined a renewed focus to amplify the effectiveness of their efforts: Health Literacy.
In addition to the focus on Health Literacy, Saskatchewan Blue Cross has a giving and volunteering decision-making process that actively involves employees. The organization leans towards greater empathy in its Corporate Social Responsibility decisionmaking, encouraging employee involvement. They use tools, such as employee surveys, to get input from employees on their community programs. Saskatchewan Blue Cross’ commitment to community investment and its shift towards health literacy hasn’t gone unnoticed and made the organization the perfect recipient of this year’s Community Investment SABEX Award. Founded by Mark and Shereen Magnus in 2020, SKN Med Spa set ambitious growth goals, aiming to expand its client base and increase revenue. Despite facing the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the usual challenges of a start-up, this med spa has demonstrated impressive growth. “At SKN Med Spa, we believe in the power of resilience and innovation, leading to growth and success,” shares Mark Magnus, who co-owns the business alongside Shereen. “Our story proves that adaptability in the face of adversity can yield results. Despite a challenging start during the pandemic, our commitment to excellence and client satisfaction has guided us through the storm.” Despite the trying environment faced initially, SKN Med Spa set ambitious goals, which they achieved by evolving their marketing strategies. For instance, their initial strategy focused predominantly on sales revenue and appointments. With time, the business adapted its approach to incorporate seasonal fluctuations and integrated advanced marketing strategies that combined social media, email, text marketing, SEO, Google advertising, and radio marketing. Such strategic adaptations have propelled a remarkable 72% growth in gross revenue in the 2023 calendar year, with further growth opportunities on the horizon.

SPIRIT OF SASKATOON AWARD
The Prairie Grazer
Showcasing the Spirit of Saskatoon One Graze at a Time
In the summer of 2020, co-founder Meghan found herself in Tofino, BC, winding down with family. There, she discovered a charming charcuterie shop that seamlessly weaved convenience with culinary delight through its grab-and-go charcuterie boxes. An idea sparked, resonating with her knowledge of the needs back home in Saskatoon. Upon her return, Meghan aligned with Cristie Zyla - a friend and avid supporter of all things local - and the concept took root. Together, they plunged into the heart of the Saskatoon community, networking with local businesses and learning the intricacies of the food industry. The result of their efforts was the birth of The Prairie Grazer. The Prairie Grazer creates curated artisan boxes - from brunch to dessert to seasonal delights, and full grazing tables curated for up to hundreds of people at a time. Utilizing local suppliers to create their artisan boxes, the products encapsulate Saskatoon's vibrant culture and culinary scene.
"The Prairie Grazer is really about showing off the cool and unique character of our Saskatoon food and business community," says Meghan Hawkins, co-founder. "We've got something for everyone. Our locals who love their city, visitors looking for a taste of our city or a lasting memory, everyone. Through our product offerings—artisan boxes and grazing tables—we aim to capture and convey our city's charm." The Prairie Grazer's customer service was recognized with the 2023 NSBA Pursuit of Excellence Business Builder Award earlier this year and is now the recipient of the Spirit of Saskatoon SABEX Award. These accolades further emphasize the co-owners and their staff’s steadfast dedication to customer satisfaction and excellence and showcasing the best of Saskatoon. The business promotes a unique Saskatoon experience, strengthening community connections while supporting the local economy. Their carefully tailored offerings not only spotlight the unique stories of Saskatoon but also offer a unique gifting experience. Meghan states, “At the Prairie Grazer, we are reinventing what it means to gather and share a meal. Food is something that brings us all together, and if we can all come together to graze and celebrate the amazing local businesses within our community, everyone wins. We are excited to see where this journey takes us, one local graze at a time!"

"Reclaim Maternity Baby Kids is built upon a deeply personal journey that began during my high-risk pregnancy with my twins, Nico and Holden," Janel Edward shares, the passion in her words evident. But through it all, I realized the strength of the community I was part of right here in Saskatoon. At Reclaim, we've woven this resilience and community spirit into our business model. We've charted a path marked not just by sales numbers but by nurturing a culture that echoes my personal experiences. They aim to foster genuine relationships and robust community partnerships, creating a caring refuge for those in need. Individuals are considered guests and neighbours, sharing meals, stories, and smiles together. "The heart of our mission is not simply to fight hunger, but to support people in overcoming the underlying issues that accompany food insecurity," explains Sandra Kary, Executive
Director of Saskatoon Friendship Inn. "By focusing beyond the meal itself, we can help empower people to tackle other important life challenges, fostering resilience and hope for a brighter future." This undertaking is made possible by a devoted team of 30 members, complemented by tireless support from individuals and corporate volunteers, collectively contributing over 1,200 hours of service monthly. INDUSTRY LEADER OF THE YEAR AWARD
Brendan King
The Visionary Behind Vendasta
A Born Entrepreneur Born to a family of entrepreneurs Brendon’s mother was a hairdresser, and his father owned a clothing factory - the passion for hard work was in his blood. As a child, he requested an Easy-Bake Oven to make money selling baked goods to his friends, kicking off his lifelong path to business ownership. Before starting Vendasta, Brendan started many business ventures, including a computer chain, which was nationally franchised and Point2 Agent, a real estate software company, that he grew to over 185,000 agents and brokers in 85 countries. Vendasta's Mission to Bolster Local Economies In 2008, Vendasta was conceived as a whitelabel platform for digital agencies and media companies. It has since flourished into a scaling SaaS platform that empowers over 60,000 partners to deliver innovative digital solutions to six million businesses worldwide. Brendan King's dedication to fostering local economics and improving his community has fueled Vendasta’s growth and helped place Saskatoon on the global tech map.
immersed in entrepreneurship. Every step—from selling pants from my dad's factory in University to navigating the challenges of recessions with Vendasta— has shaped my vision and reinforced my resolve. Failure is never a dead end, just a detour toward a more insightful path to success. And yes, the journey often entails learning lessons the expensive way, but as long as you're learning, you're moving forward,” says King. Financial Leadership and Strategic Acquisitions Under King’s leadership, Vendasta has navigated several robust funding rounds, raising $40 million in 2019 and clinching a momentous $119.5 million round in 2021— marking the largest technology venture capital round in the history of Canadian prairie investment. These investments are a testament to the confidence and belief that investors place in Vendasta’s potential. Beyond fundraising, Brendan King has strategically propelled Vendasta through several acquisitions—including CalendarHero, MatchCraft, Yesware, and Broadly. These acquisitions significantly expand Vendasta's product suite and access to avant-garde technologies, reinforcing the company's commitment to remain at the forefront of the digital arena.
Some might say that 2008 - a global recession - was not the easiest time to start a business. But according to King, starting in a recession made him focus because when things are tough, you have to have a reason to exist and learn to be resilient.
Recognition and Impact Beyond Numbers Vendasta's impact extends beyond numbers and financial success. The enterprise and King himself have been the proud recipients of many industry accolades. The honours include the Top SaaS CEO award and Waterstone Human Capital's Canada's Most Admired CEO award, earning Brendan King recognition as a celebrated leader in the tech community. His vision and dedication have cemented Vendasta's position as a provider of toptier digital solutions for small businesses, further enriching Saskatoon’s growth and reputation in a globalized digital age.

Brendan King’s Vision for the Future Not just resting on the laurels of financial growth and acquisitions, Vendasta is venturing into the dynamic terrain of artificial intelligence, moving forward with integrating AI into its platform. This milestone represents a significant stride in its quest to democratize technology to help local businesses thrive in an increasingly digital marketplace. King thinks Saskatoon is a great place to capitalize on this future without fear of failure. He says, “Here in Saskatoon, we have the resourcefulness, the tenacity, and the courage to brave any storm and transform it into a beacon of innovation. FAMILY BUSINESS OF THE YEAR AWARD
Butler Byers
A Testament to Family Entrepreneurship In the world of business, few narratives resonate quite like that of a successful family enterprise. Butler Byers Insurance, a Saskatoon-rooted organization, embodies this tale, balancing family values with commercial excellence. This family enterprise's history, accomplishments, and community commitment earned it the SABEX Family Business of the Year award. Deep-rooted Values and Community Commitment Family-run businesses contribute significantly to Canada's economy, generating over 60% of the nation's GDP and fostering approximately 70% of fresh job creation. However, their impact extends beyond impressive numbers. Butler Byers Insurance has been a pillar of the Saskatoon community for over a century, embedding its deep-rooted values within the city's economic and social fabric. A Legacy Passed Down Through Generations Since its inception in 1907, Butler Byers has become one of Western Canada’s largest independent insurance brokers. The transition of leadership from the third-generation CEO, Drew Byers, to the fourth-generation, Scott Byers, in 2022 has further solidified its position as a multi-generational frontline business operation in the insurance industry, with two offices in Saskatoon, downtown and on 8th Street.
A Legacy Shaping the Landscape From its early start in real estate and insurance, Butler Byers is now solely focused on insurance, proactive risk advice, and related products. Through the generations, the company remains a trusted partner, advisor and friend to countless individuals, families and businesses throughout the Prairies. Today, their services span vehicle, property, personal, business insurance, and group and pension. Further demonstrating their commitment to the business community and expertise, since 2015, they have been offering a monthly podcast titled “Risky Business” dedicated to commercial insurance. Against the backdrop of the city's beautiful prairie landscape, Butler Byers Insurance stands tall, embodying the spirit of family entrepreneurship and reinforcing Saskatoon's position as a thriving hub for business. Their legacy continues to shape the region's commercial landscape, adding to the rich tapestry of business endeavours that define the Saskatoon community.
Commitment to Empowering Other Businesses In addition to their commitment to business growth, the Byers family hasn't lost sight of their dedication to community, reflected in their active role within the Family Business Association of Saskatoon. As founding members, they are deeply engaged in a Personal Advisory Circle, investing their time and expertise to motivate and inspire other family businesses.

SABEX offers a unique opportunity to discover the diversity and dynamism of Saskatoon's business community. The 2023 nominees and award recipients included Saskatoon Business College which was inducted to the Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame. With a history dating back to 1907, imagine the challenges and changes this family-owned business has had to face. Such conditions require incredible resilience to thrive. Such grit is inspiring to nominees at the other end of the longevity spectrum such as those in the most crowded group of finalists – the New Business Award. We look forward to watching them as they too continue to contribute to our community in the coming years. The notable winner of this category – Reclaim Maternity Baby Kids – is an exemplar of seeing a need, recognizing, then capitalizing on an opportunity. New for this year was the introduction of the Family Business of the Year award, acknowledging the Chamber’s new partnership with the Family Business Association of Saskatoon and unique challenges and contributions of those businesses founded and continuously operated by family members. Butler Byers Insurance, inaugural recipient of this award represents four generations of commitment to the insurance needs of local citizens and businesses. Another new award this year highlights an aspect crucial to the success of each of the finalists and award recipients – leadership. Brendan King, co-founder of Vendasta is recognized locally, nationally, and internationally as an exemplary leader and visionary. Brendan’s vision and commitment to maintaining Vendasta’s head office in Saskatoon reminds us of what is possible when we aim high. 2023 SABEX Awards beyond today, paying attention to what new opportunities may be emerging, what customers value, planning to take advantage of new technologies, capabilities, and geographies, all while honouring their vision and values. The Small Business Growth award is especially daunting, limited to employee headcount of 1 – 50, and having achieved 15%+ growth in profits, locations, or workforce in the past year. Yet, several inspiring finalists achieved those hurdles, with SKN Med Spa prevailing. Referencing “safety” as a key business metric, all finalists in the Safety Culture category must deal with unusual risks daily, protecting everyone within their workplace and job site to ensure that everyone goes home at night. The commitment required to meet that objective is constant, deliberate, and collaborative. Prairie Crane’s excellence propelled them to receiving that important award this year. Discover Saskatoon received the MISTAHI MAMÍCÍHÍTOWIN award acknowledging the impact of their work to foster good relationships with Indigenous people in our city and region, and among partners toward the important building toward economic reconciliation. In a similar vein, the Community Impact award recognizes the tireless work of community-based organizations and charities which – through programs and services – enhance the quality of life for all Saskatoon citizens. Saskatoon Friendship Inn’s many volunteers and partners were worthy recipients of the honour this year. Encouragement of employee volunteerism, partnerships with local charities and agencies, also makes a real difference in lives. This year’s Community Investment award recipient – Saskatchewan Blue Cross – knits its commitments throughout its business and workforce. It is fitting that Prairie Grazer, a small business focusing on unique, food-based, positive customer experiences and local inputs received this year’s Spirit of Saskatoon
Saskatoon Chamber Board Chair Tanis Taylor
