JACK SEM PLE & THE HO RN D O GS

Colin James has worn many hats during his long and storied career. When Colin first hit the scene a quarter century ago, he became an instant rock guitar hero, mentored by the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan. Since then, this iconic Canadian has topped the charts as a pop vocalist, recorded an acclaimed blues album and led the swing revival with his Little Big Band, which he both fronted and produced. He has performed for the Queen, sold multi-platinum many times over and continues to sell out shows coast to coast. Along the way, he's written memorable hit songs and given us distinctive covers of timeless classics with his newest album teasing that the best is still yet to come. JACK SEM PLE & THE HO RN D O GS: Jack Semple has been a mainstay of the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival for many years. This year his band is paying tribute to the soul and funk music of the 60's and 70's with a horn section affectionately called "The Horn Dogs". Playing the music of Aretha Franklin, the Commodores and many other classic groups, you'll be dancing to the music before you know it!

Combining funky, groove-laden soul with handcrafted acoustic folk-rock, Ben Harper enjoyed cult status during the course of the '90s before gaining wider attention toward the decade's end. As a young artist, he drew his influences from classic singer/songwriters, blues revivalists, guitar slingers, and jam bands like Blues Traveler and Phish, which meant he was embraced by critics and college kids alike. Despite finding commercial success with the radio single "Steal My Kisses" in 2000, Harper continued to explore different musical textures during the 21st century, enjoying a solid fan base at home and a considerable amount of fame in Europe.

Ohio-born John Legend is a critically acclaimed, multi-award winning, singer-songwriter. He’s sold an impressive seven million albums worldwide and garnered nine Grammy Awards, three Soul Train Awards, and a BET Award for Best New Artist. A graduate of University of Pennsylvania, he studied English and African-American literature. During the same period, Legend was introduced to Lauryn Hill, who hired him to play piano on her track "Everything is Everything," and shortly thereafter he began to play shows around the Philadelphia area, eventually expanding his audience base to New York, Boston, Atlanta and Washington D.C. After college, Legend was introduced to then up and coming artist Kanye West, who quickly signed Legend to his G.O.O.D. Music label and hired him to sing vocal hooks on much of his music.

Mississippi born Charlie Musselwhite is one of the most revered blues musicians in the world. The harmonica master has won countless awards during his legendary career including induction into the Blues Hall of Fame and collaborated with innumerable musical giants of the past 50 years including Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Tom Waits, and Eddie Vedder, just to name to name a few. HYPNOTIC BRASS E N SE MBLE : Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a family of 8 blood brothers, sons of jazz trumpeter/composer Phil Cohran (Sun Ra, co-founder of AACM, mentor to EARTH WIND & FIRE), who were raised on the south-side of Chicago under the rigorous training methods their musically talented parents. By 1999, a few of the older members returned from music scholarships at college to find their younger brothers playing on the streets of Chicago to rave success. They subsequently formed the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and after finding a drummer, began to collectively write original tunes in order to create a record with their very own sound "The Flipside".

Legend’s debut album, "Get Lifted", was released in 2004 through Columbia Records and spawned the artist's first hit single, “Ordinary People". The follow up was 2006’s platinumselling "Once Again", which brought Legend another Grammy for Best Male R&B Performance, for his single “Heaven". Legend’s next release was 2008’s Evolver, led by the hit single "Green Light" featuring Andre 3000. His latest work "Love in the Future" is a tremendous success with the hit track "All of Me" rising up the music charts in Canada and the U.S.

St.Vincent has been moving at a breakneck speed for the past two years, barely stopping to catch her breath amidst a whirlwind of recording and touring. In 2011 she released her third album, 'Strange Mercy,' called "one of the year's best" by the New York Times and "something to behold" by Pitchfork. The record cemented her status as one of her generation's most fearsome and inventive guitarists, earned her the covers of SPIN, Paper, and Under the Radar, performances everywhere from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Fallon to Letterman and Conan, and a year-long sold-out tour of her biggest venues to date around the world. St.Vincent's newest album is her most lyrically sophisticated and musically diverse collection to date, meshing distorted, aggressive electric guitars and bold vocal and synthesizer arrangements on top of a relentless rhythm section. REUBEN AND THE DARK: Reuben and the Dark is the newest project from Calgary's Reuben Bullock. Fresh off the release of his second solo album, Bullock has formed a band of some of Alberta's finest musicians. This quartet has been quickly building a reputation as a killer live band, their soaring four-part vocal harmonies achieving epic heights, always leaving crowds hungry for more.

Born in New Jersey it was obvious from a young age that Ms. Hill possessed extraordinary talents, abilities and propensity for creativity. She would eventually establish her own categories that incorporate hip-hop and R&B and even Classical. She would establish a reputation in the music world as the lone female member of The Fugees, whose record sales would make them the second biggest selling R&B act worldwide since Michael Jackson. She launched her solo career with the release of the commercially successful and critically acclaimed album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which earned a record breaking five Grammy Awards.

It’s really, really hard to keep writing good songs, record after record, year after year - but not for Tegan and Sara. Their newest album, Heartthrob, is an exuberant, polished collection of tracks that will come as a shock, almost a deliberate provocation. Heartthrob gives us Tegan and Sara in their superhero tights and capes, ready to conquer the pop universe, and the new outfits suit them just as well as their old-school jeans and T-shirts. Don’t be surprised if you hear these songs in an arena, or blasting on a car radio, or leaking from a teenager’s earbuds on a bus. That’s what they’re made for. And don’t worry if you experience a brief sense of disorientation the first couple of times you hear them, a momentary inability to put a name to those familiar voices. By the time you realize who you’re listening to, you’ll already be singing along. ROYAL CANOE: A six-piece ensemble from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Royal Canoe gives you everything, but on their own maniacally hybrid terms. It's one thing to reference a particular style, or even a range of styles. It's another thing entirely to grab huge handfuls of sounds from pretty much anywhere, throw them all together and come up with something both cohesive and totally distinctive. This is what Royal Canoe does best.

GALACTIC is part of a diverse community of musicians, and in their own studio, with Mercurio and Ellman producing, they have the luxury of experimenting. So on their albums, they do something that’s unusual in rock, but not so controversial an idea in, say, hip-hop: they create something that’s a little like a revue, a virtual show featuring different vocalists (mostly from New Orleans) and instrumental soloists each taking their turn on stage in the GALACTIC sound universe. Mostly the band creates new material in collaboration with its many guests, though they occasionally rework a classic. Despite the appearance of various platinum names on GALACTIC albums, they especially like to work with artists who are still underground. If you listen to CARNIVALE ELECTRICOS together with the two previous studio albums (YA-KA-MAY and FROM THE CORNER TO THE BLOCK), you’ll hear the most complete cross-section of what’s happening in contemporary New Orleans anywhere – all of it tight and radio-ready. MACEO PARKER: Maceo Parker has been a music-maker and world-class performer for almost fifty years and distinguishes himself through exceptional musicality and craftsmanship. He’s made an indelible mark on soul, funk and jazz through partnerships and collaborations with other world-class artists. Most notably, Parker put his unique spin on James Brown’s sound, which Brown recognized openly in his lyrics. Parker has also collaborated with artists like George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, as well as, pop acts like Prince, Living Colour, Bryan Ferry, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Dave Matthews Band. He’s entertained a wide audience with his unique saxophone sound, being one of the most sampled artists in modern hip-hop and pop tracks. Establishing himself as an invaluable player and performer since the 60s, Maceo Parker’s musical works radiate positive and groovy vibes and continue to entertain audiences worldwide.

It's a match made not above nor below, but rather in some altogether hipper, funkier place. On their new release OUT LOUDER, John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Chris Wood, plus guitar guru John Scofield, make music not of this world, yet rooted in the earth tones of jazz, funk, and blues. Music from the heart, for the mind, and made to shake the earth, not to mention the body. For the first time ever, Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood will embark on a tour, showcasing their collaborative, instinctive sound. Look for them to perform music from OUT LOUDER and A Go Go, with several yet-to-be-released tunes poised to be thrown into the mix. This music comes from a deep, hip, funky place, and Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood are ready to take it out there and everywhere. Cassandra Wilson is a jazz musician, vocalist, songwriter, and producer from Jackson, Mississippi. Described by critic Gary Giddins as “a singer blessed with an unmistakable timbre and attack who has expanded the playing field” by incorporating blues, country and folk music into her work. She began working as a vocalist by the mid ’70s, singing a wide variety of material. And after moving to New York City in the early 80’s, Cassandra met saxophonist Steve Coleman and became one of the founding members of the M-Base Collective. She signed with Blue Note Records in 1992 and released a landmark album titled “Blue Light ‘Til Dawn” which would pave the way for a new generation of jazz singers.

The critical consensus is that Charles Lloyd has never sounded better. As he enters his 75th year, the depth of his expression reflects a lifetime of experience. Lloyd has a legendary history in the music world, and could certainly be in a position to slow down and rest on his laurels. But looking back has never been of great interest to this tender warrior; this seeker of beauty and truth. “Go forward,” is his motto, as he keeps shifting to a higher, well calibrated gear.

S H O W 7: 30PM

ROYAL WO O D : A large part of Royal’s success has been built the old fashioned way - through word of mouth and constant touring. The past few years have seen him venture out on the road with artists like David Gray and headline tours including the Root of it All Tour, which was a renaissance to his early days of performing solo on stage with just his piano and guitar. With the release of We Were Born To Glory he continues to win each fan through the intimate connection only a truly great songwriter can make with his audience.

An amalgam of LA’s finest punk bands and seasoned bluegrass musicians, Old Man Markley is creating music that defies boundaries. Founded in 2007 in the sunny San Fernando Valley, OMM cut its teeth playing countless jams of bluegrass standards and covers of distinctly un-bluegrass songs done bluegrass style. OMM has had the honour of sharing bills with such legendary acts as NOFX, Flogging Molly, Against Me!, Bad Religion, Wanda Jackson, the Devil Makes Three, Youth Brigade, and The Reverend Horton Heat. Look for OMM to be having fun at every show and for the crowd to be having even more!

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a family of eight blood brothers, sons of jazz trumpeter and composer Phil Cohran (co-founder of AACM, mentor to Earth Wind & Fire). They were raised on the south-side of Chicago under the rigorous training methods of their musically talented parents. By 1999, a few of the older members returned from music scholarships at college to find their younger brothers playing jazz music, with a hiphop influence, on the streets of Chicago to rave success. They subsequently formed the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and began to collectively write original tunes in order to create a record with their very own sound "The Flipside". PHO ENIX LAU RÉN & THE STRENGTH: Phoenix Laurén, a world class R&B star on the rise with a sultry and powerful voice, backed by Saskatoon's own musical heavyweights: Tim Vaughn, Andrew Dickson, Josh Palmer, and Kyle Krysa who make up The Strength.

Reuben and the Dark is the newest project from Calgary's Reuben Bullock. Fresh off the release of his second solo album, Bullock has formed a band of some of Alberta's finest musicians. This quartet has been quickly building a reputation as a killer live band, their soaring four-part vocal harmonies achieving epic heights, always leaving crowds hungry for more. And at the core of all this sits Bullock's songs, which manage to achieve a balance between seemingly disparate elements: the introspective with the anthemic, and the feat of sounding simultaneously ancient and uniquely contemporary.

The members of Young Rival like to joke that they’re perpetually unfashionable but the band is fine with the periphery, of course. It’s not into chasing fashion or blog buzz. It’s got plenty of friends in the business, too, having done a couple of tours now with pals the Sadies and Born Ruffians, among many others. But it’s still a tough position to be in as a Canadian indie band if you never sound neither particularly “indie” nor “Canadian” in whatever the going senses of “indie” and “Canadian” might be. However, live is where it’s at for Young Rival. It rebounded from the loss of its second guitarist, Young Rival has become one of the most fearsome three-pieces on the North American touring trail.

Jack Semple has been a mainstay of the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. This year he's paying tribute to the soul and funk music of the 60's and 70's with a horn section affectionately called "The Horn Dogs". Playing the music of Aretha Franklin, the Commodors and many other classic soul musicians as well as some funky originals his show is a wall of funk with a groove to make you move. Come daaaaaaance to the music!

Leif Vollebekk spent two years searching for perfect takes. This search took him from his home in Montreal to a studio in Manhattan, from a farmhouse in Woodstock, NY to a mansion outside Paris, and the result is a dusty, polished, new, old record called North Americana. After his 2010 debut, Vollebekk knew the kind of album he wanted to make next: a record like the ones he loves by Gillian Welch or Ryan Adams, that feel old and familiar even when they’re new. But also a record that speaks to the listener through its lyrics, with songs “that can hold up in a storm,” that are packed full of perfect little mistakes.

“As I’m getting older, chip up on my shoulder…” is the opening line from Mac DeMarco’s second full-length LP ‘Salad Days,’ the follow up to 2012’s lauded ‘Mac DeMarco 2.’ Amongst that familiar croon and lilting guitar, that initial line from the title track sets the tone for an LP of a maturing singer/songwriter/producer. Someone strangely self-aware of the positives and negatives of their current situation at the ripe old age of 23. CALVIN LOVE: Since the press widely dubbed him an “artist to watch” in 2012 with his debut New Radar LP, thanks largely to his casual knack for pop hooks and wild child experimentalism, Calvin Love returns with the “Cool” single with some new tricks in his bag. Expanding his operation with a full band, there’s a new freedom that’s becoming on him with charismatic certitude to his delivery. He’s a dreary rebel of David Lynch or Jim Jarmusch’s making, wrapping you around his finger like a space-lounge James Brown.

A six-piece ensemble from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Royal Canoe gives you everything, but on their own maniacally hybrid terms. It's one thing to reference a particular style, or even a range of styles. It's another thing entirely to grab huge handfuls of sounds from pretty much anywhere, throw them all together and come up with something both cohesive and totally distinctive. This is what Royal Canoe does best. YO U NG B ENJAM INS: Young Benjamins hail from the sunny streets of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The band is comprised of Neusha Mofazzali, Veronique Poulin and Brynn Krysa. Young Benjamins combine contemporary folk and rock with a subtle dose of pop, creating a sound that is infectious and refreshing. The group has had the opportunity to perform at festivals such as Hillside Festival, Sled Island, Regina Folk Festival, Ness Creek, SaskTel Jazz Fest, POP Montreal and Folk Alliance.

Montreal’s own Nomadic Massive has firmly established itself as a group of premier performers and skilled musicians in a genre that has evolved from its early days of two turntables and a microphone. These musical nomads represent an openminded hip-hop which finds its inspiration in the traditions of the past; combining live instrumentation, samples, and a wide array of vocal styles. The group has also left its mark internationally; initiating socio-cultural exchanges with likeminded artists from Sao Paolo, Brazil and in Havana, Cuba. In both countries, these initiatives involved educational and musical workshops, concerts and studio collaborations. AARO N ADAIR & SK SO U L: Aaron Adair & the SK Soul Band bring elements of old-school R&B, soul, and funk while performing tracks from the warm and groovy Aanalog album. This 7-piece band features vintage instruments, infectious melodies, deep bass and drum combinations, and a feel-good horn section.

Truth Be Sold, Leeroy Stagger’s eighth studio album, takes listeners on a journey to the edge of Stagger’s heavy-roots, rock ‘n’ roll mind. The 11-song album is a mix of brand new and previously unreleased songs hand-picked by Berlin and Stagger. The beautifully scathing “Cities On Fire” was written eight years ago and was updated in the studio to document the Occupy Wall Street movement that was gaining momentum while the record was being made. In a departure from Staggers rootsy past, Stagger lets his punk rock past re-emerge with a tip of the hat to The Stooges and Queens of The Stones Age.

We hope that the free service will encourage the use of bicycles and other forms of sustainable transportation — we’ll take your skateboards, rollerblades and strollers as well — while helping to reduce traffic congestion during the Jazz Festival. HOW IT WO RKS: Bike valets work just like a coat check. You just ride up to the valet, where an attendant will give you a numbered tag and park your bike in our secure area. When you’re ready to leave, you just show us your tag and we’ll get your bike for you. It’s that simple. The valet opens each day just before the music starts in PotashCorp Club Jazz and bikes must be picked up the same day before 11pm.

It’s not simply his abundant virtuosity that has made Christian McBride the most in-demand bassist of his generation. McBride consistently combines his deft musicianship with an innate ability to communicate his enthusiasm to an audience. Any time that McBride steps into the studio or onto a stage he plays what could be called “people music,” but it’s a particularly apt title for the second release by his hard-swinging acoustic quintet - Inside Straight.

ROYAL WOOD

Norma Winstone was born in London and first attracted attention in the late sixties when she shared the bill at Ronnie Scott’s club with Roland Kirk. Although she began her career singing jazz standards, she became involved in the avant garde movement, exploring the use of the voice in an experimental way and evolving her own wordless approach to improvisation. Her current group is a trio featuring Italian pianist Glauco Venier and German saxophonist/bass clarinetist Klaus Gesing.

Few musicians share the ability of saxophonist/composer Rudresh Mahanthappa to embody the expansive possibilities of his music with his culture. What has materialized is a sound that hybridizes progressive jazz and South Indian classical music in a fluid and forward-looking form that reflects Mahanthappa’s own experience growing up a second-generation Indian-American.

A large part of Royal’s success has been built the old fashioned way - through word of mouth and constant touring. The past few years have seen him venture out on the road with artists like David Gray and headline tours including the Root of it All Tour, which was a renaissance to his early days of performing solo on stage with just his piano and guitar. Thus, Royal Wood has laid the foundation of his career by writing honest music to much critical acclaim. With the release of We Were Born To Glory he continues to win each fan through the intimate connection only a truly great songwriter can make with his audience.

Her latest CD 'A Tribute To Miriam Makeba' which won Lorraine the 2013 Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year, is a tribute to the legendary songstress, who remains the most important female vocalist to emerge out of South Africa.

The Saskatchewan Jazz Festival is proud to present Kelly Jefferson with this year’s Special Recognition Award on Saturday, June 28 at 7:30PM at the Broadway Theatre.

The Saskatchewan Jazz Festival is proud to present Spencer Early with this year’s Jim Hill Festival Builder Award on Friday, June 20 at 8:30PM at the TD Mainstage, Bessborough Gardens.

Kelly Jefferson was born and raised in Regina. Music has always been a very important part of his life. At age 10, Kelly started playing the saxophone, and joined the Regina Lions Band organization, where he was introduced to the joys and discipline involved with making music. He was a proud member of the Lions Band until graduating from Campbell Collegiate in 1988.

For Spencer Early, the festival has been his cultural reward at the end of a busy spring season at Early's Farm and Garden Centre. It's a well-deserved break from long work days to even longer nights attending the festival - where it's not unusual to find Spencer enjoying the many eclectic artists and genres the festival has to offer.

With a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance from McGill University in Montreal and a Masters degree in Jazz/ Commercial Music from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, Kelly took to the world stage performing with The National Arts Centre Orchestra, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Maria Schneider, Bill Holman, Ray Anderson, Kenny Werner, Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Al Jarreau, Michel LeGrand, Nicholas Payton, Brian Blade, as well as Ray Brown, Sonny Fortune, Randy Brecker, Renee Rosnes, Johnny Mathis, Russell Malone, Joey DeFrancesco, and Dee Dee Bridgewater, among others. Kelly has toured extensively in Canada, the United States, Japan, Thailand, Europe, South Korea and China, including a nine-month tour in 2000 as the tenor saxophonist with legendary trumpeter Maynard Ferguson and has performed on numerous Juno winning and nominated recordings. The Kelly Jefferson Quartet’s release Next Exit, was nominated for a 2011 Juno for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year and is also a five-time nominee for Saxophonist of the Year by the National Jazz Awards. Presently on faculty at The University of Toronto and York University where he teaches saxophone, small ensembles, jazz theory, ear training and improvisation, with previous teaching positions at Humber College in Toronto and McGill University in Montreal, Mr. Jefferson has also adjudicated at music festivals across Canada and has given numerous clinics and workshops throughout Canada, the United States and China.

“My mentor for this has been longtime friend Bob Eaton, current Festival Chair. Bob knew my musical interests and enticed me from the Free Stages to accompany him to the Bessborough Gardens, The Bassment, and Broadway area late night shows, what fun!”

J I M H I L L F E S T I VA L B U I L D E R S AWA R D :

SPENCER E A R LY

In 1989, Spencer Early joined the Festival Board of Directors, holding the Festival Chair position for three of his 12 years on the board. During that time and beyond, he has seen the festival transition from a small and strong festival to an internationally recognized event enjoyed by some 85,000 people annually. With a strong belief that board members should be active participants during the festival, Spencer has been an ardent volunteer. His generous nature and good humour provided him the opportunity to meet other dedicated volunteers and enjoy more music than would normally be possible. Today his entire family takes part in the festival, volunteering in a number of capacities. The festival truly belongs to the community and has become bigger than the founders could have imagined. Thanks to them and especially Jim Hill for their vision. I humbly accept this award for my small part.”

Kelly Jefferson is honoured to be the recipient of the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival 2014 Special Recognition Award.
