Another SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival is set to begin and SaskTel is thrilled to be part of the show as we are every year. We support arts and culture across the province, but we’re especially proud to sponsor this major event spotlighting both local Saskatchewan talent and major acts from across Canada and around the world. The eleven days ahead will take us from June to July with hours and hours of incredible music. The staff have put together a tremendous lineup once again and when it is over we will go home with memories and songs to carry us through the rest of the summer. Whether you are a performer, one of the hard-working volunteers or simply a fan, I hope you will all savour the sounds and spirit of the festival and take a moment to join me in thanking the organizers and everyone who has given time to make the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival one of Canada’s premiere musical festivals.

Universal Motown recording artist Erykah Badu, best known for her eccentric style and cerebral music, is a four-time GRAMMY award winning American soul singer and songwriter. Regarded as the "First Lady of Neo-Soul" or the "Queen of Neo-Soul", Badu’s sound - a concoction of soul, hip-hop and jazz - cannot be contained to a single genre. Self-described as a “mother first”, Badu is a touring artist, DJ, teacher, community activist, holistic healer, doula, vegan, and conscious spirit. Baduizm, Badu's highly acclaimed debut album, was released in early 1997 went triple platinum and along with "On & On," won Grammy Awards at the 1998 ceremony. Spring 2010, Badu released her fifth studio album, and second installment of a two-part New Amerykah series. New Amerykah, Part 1: Fourth World War, a concept album that was digitally produced and political in tone, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Rolling Stone named it one of the year’s best albums. New Amerykah, Part II: Return of the Ahnk, which features lush live instrumentation and taps into Badu’s emotional side by thematically focusing on romance and relationships, made its debut at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart. HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE: Returning to the Festival, the eight strong cohort of horn playing brothers (plus one unrelated drummer) make up the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Taking their stylistic cues from jazz, funk, hip-hop, and various strains of world music, they started out playing on the streets of Chicago and New York selling their self-released albums and growing a loyal following. All sons of Phil Cohran, co-founder of AACM and mentor to Earth, Wind and Fire, the brothers grew up on the south side of Chicago under the rigorous training methods of their parents.

Since their debut in 2000, The New Pornographers have released five studio albums including, Together (2010), of which, NPR Music praised, “Unimpeachable pop gems…these are the songs of summer”. The melding of voices is endlessly inventive, weaving in and out of the nervous-sounding rhythm that is the band’s calling card. Their latest work, Brill Bruisers, is the first new release in four years from the acclaimed supergroup. Of the new album, lead-singer and main songwriter AC Newman comments, “This is a celebration record. After periods of difficulty, I am at a place where nothing in my life is dragging me down and the music reflects that.” VIET CONG: Calgary based, Viet Cong, plays steely, pummelling and industrial music that suddenly opens up into pockets of shimmering and unexpected beauty. Their debut, self-titled album, Viet Cong, recorded in a barn-turned-studio, is reminiscent of a Joy Division-esque sound and moves at breakneck speed. Before you know it you’ll be howling along with this 4-piece powerhouse. SLOW DOWN MOLASSES: Saskatoon’s Slow Down Molasses is a five-piece indie rock collective described as “the Broken Social Scene of the prairies” by Toronto’s Exclaim! Magazine. They take cues from the wide-open spaces of their home, crafting expansive, texture-heavy pop songs that are prone to breaking into storm squalls of drone, delay and feedback.

The music that Wyclef Jean has written, performed, and produced, both solo and as founder and guiding member of the Fugees, has been a consistently powerful, pop cultural force for over two decades. In 1996, the Fugees released their monumental album The Score. The album, created in Wyclef’s studio in his uncle’s basement in New Jersey, hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned a trio of smash singles (including their indelible reinvention of Roberta Flack’s 1973 ballad “Killing Me Softly”), and is now certified six times platinum. But Wyclef, a child prodigy with a wealth of musical influences from jazz to classic rock to reggae, resisted the pressure to duplicate the sound and style of that masterwork. Instead he launched himself as a producer and solo artists. Ever since, Wyclef has been rewarded for his creativity and adventurousness with three Grammy Awards, a spot on the cover of Rolling Stone’s special “Top 50 Hip Hop Players,” and the opportunity to make music with such legends as Michael Jackson, Queen, Mick Jagger, and Paul Simon. He has released six albums that have sold nearly nine million copies worldwide, including his 1997 debut The Carnival. While it’s been six years since his last studio album, Wyclef has not abandoned his dedication to sonic excursions. His new album, the upcoming Clefication, features contributions from Afrojack, Emeli Sandé, and multi-platinum DJ/recording artist Avicii. WYCLE F J E A N

FIVE ALARM FUNK: On stage this group is an unstoppable collective of energy. Nine musicians perform intricate and airtight arrangements with delirious dance moves and full-on head banging. Choreographed arm movements coincide with melodic climaxes, while the three percussionists create an absurd spectacle. The group has been touring relentlessly for 10 years and recently released their fifth studio album, Abandon Earth.

With over 2 million views on YouTube, independent sales over 30,000 albums, a 2013 European Blues Award, and winning Best Solo Performer at the Memphis Blues Challenge, it appears that the entire world is now discovering Matt Andersen. A powerhouse performer with a giant soul-filled voice and commanding stage presence, Matt has built a formidable following the old fashioned way – touring worldwide and letting the converted audiences and Andersen devotees spread his reputation through word of mouth. Now with Weightless, his debut album for True North Records, Matt’s music has been captured on record as never before. After hearing the instant classic material on Weightless, it’s hard to imagine any fan of Matt Andersen—old or new—leaving unsatisfied.

ST EV E H IL L HARPOONIST AND THE AXE MURDERER: In reality, Shawn 'The Harpoonist' Hall and Matthew 'The Axe Murderer' Rogers evoke much more than just grisly nautical imagery. Armed with an arsenal of harmonicas, a mess of foot percussion, and a road-worn Telecaster, the duo kick out raw and primal blues in the tradition of a "decade-deep blues style", while infusing the genre with a jolt of renewed energy. STEVE HILL: When it comes to one-man bands, guitarist and singer extraordinaire, Steve Hill, has no limits. Throughout his lengthy and intense live shows, Hill performs standing up, while singing and playing guitar, with his feet playing bass drum, snare drum, hi-hats, with a drum stick fused to the head of his trusty guitar, and any other percussion within reach. With roots, blues, rock, and a little bit of country, Hill performs his original songs, blues classics and raucous renditions of Jimi Hendrix. In January 2015, Hill was awarded four coveted Maple Blues Awards, including "Electric Act of the Year", and "Guitarist of the Year".

When Colin first hit the scene a quarter century ago, he became an instant rock guitar hero, mentored by the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan. Since then, this iconic Canadian has topped the charts as a pop vocalist, recorded an acclaimed blues album and led the swing revival with his Little Big Band, which he both fronted and produced. He has performed for the Queen, sold multi-platinum many times over and continues to sell out shows coast to coast. Along the way, he’s written memorable hit songs and given us distinctive covers of timeless classics. Colin said of his newest album, Hearts on Fire, “Making this record with my good friend Colin Linden and a fantastic veteran rhythm section was an amazing experience. The majority of the recording was done in Nashville during a stretch of warm spring weather so every time I hear the songs I feel like I’m right back in The South. I hope my fans enjoy listening to this record as much as we all enjoyed making it.” LEE FIELDS AND THE EXPRESSIONS: With a catalogue that ranges from James Brown-style funk to lo-fi blues to contemporary Southern soul to collaborations with French house DJ/ producer Martin Solveig, Lee Fields has done it all. Today, with The Expressions,, Lee Fields continues to evolve, enmeshed into the group’s sweeping, string-laden, cinematic soul sound. Their latest full-length, Faithful Man, released in March 2012 on Truth & Soul, was called “one smoking mother of an old-sound soul record” by Pitchfork. IKEBE SHAKEDOWN: Ikebe Shakedown’s powerful instrumental soul takes “big unison horns, slinky bass lines, tight little guitar licks—and blends them with tasty grooves culled from '70s-style horn-driven funk (WNYC Soundcheck).”

JAZZ HISTORY

HANDY TO HANCOCK

Text by KATE MATTHEWS

AN ALL-STAR EP OF JAZZ HISTORY

Trombonist Clay Smith is rumoured to have said, “If the truth were known about the origin of the word 'Jazz,' it would never be mentioned in polite company.” There are as many versions of the etymology of ‘Jazz’ as there are beat signatures on Brubeck’s Time Out. What each tale has in common is this: Jazz represents energy, spontaneity and freedom of expression. It is with this spirit that Jazz has inspired generations of musicians and music lovers. BIRTH OF A GENRE: W.C. Handy publishes Memphis Blues (1912) Finding roots in the Southern United States, Jazz owes its beginnings to Blues icons such as Charley Patton, Bessie Smith and W.C. Handy. Known as the ‘Father of the Blues,’ Handy is credited with defining the constellation of notes that characterize the modern blues form. Drawn from sources like gospel, call-and-response work songs and traditional African music, the blues were formally established around 1912 when Handy selfpublished his genre-defining work, Memphis Blues. INSPIRATION He noticed that as workers sang in the fields, they would slur between specific notes. Handy sought to convey this effect instrumentally so he introduced flattened third and seventh notes— known today as blue notes. It was the use of these blue notes that would define a genre that continues to influence musicians the world over. THROWBACK TRACK Louis Armstrong’s revered 1954 recording of Handy’s Memphis Blues. FESTIVAL MIXTAPE Anything by Matt Andersen, B.C. Read or Steep Canyon Rangers. FUN FACT In 1958, Nat King Cole portrayed Handy in Paramount’s St. Louis Blues, a film based on Handy’s life. QUOTED “Life is something like this trumpet. If you don't put anything in it, you don't get anything out.”

ELLA FITZGERALD & DUKE ELLINGTON

ELL A FITZGERALD W I TH MARILYN M O N R O E

#degreesofseparation Handy set up shop in New York City’s historic music publishing district, Tin Pan Alley ¬ Ella Fitzgerald recorded many songs written by composers in that area, including Handy’s St. Louis Blues. LADIES FIRST: Ella Fitzgerald wins a GRAMMY (1957) In a career spanning six decades, Fitzgerald collaborated with some of the greatest Jazz musicians of her time including Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and many more. Her recordings with Ellington from her legendary Songbook series earned her the first of 13 GRAMMY awards and made Fitzgerald the first African American woman to win the award. With her dazzling vocal virtuosity and seemingly effortless technique, the ‘First Lady of Song’ paved the way for generations of female singers, influencing everyone from Aretha Franklin to Lady Gaga. THROWBACK TRACK Her cover of Ellington’s It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing. FESTIVAL MIXTAPE Listen to DeeDee Bridgewater’s 1997 tribute album Dear Ella, and anything by Erykah Badu, Molly Johnson or Cécile McLorin Salvant. FUN FACT When an influential Hollywood nightclub would not book Fitzgerald because of alleged segregation issues, Marilyn Monroe, a friend and fan, lobbied the owner to book Fitzgerald. Monroe promised that if he did, she would reserve a front row table every night. The owner complied, Monroe kept her word, and the booking was instrumental in Fitzgerald’s career. QUOTED “It isn't where you came from, it's where you're going that counts.” #degreesofseparation In 1947, Fitzgerald made her Carnegie Hall debut alongside Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker ¬ Parker’s 1947 recordings featured Miles Davis, who was in Parker’s band at the time. continued on page 47

The Bad Plus — bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King — have a well-earned reputation for pushing the limits on what is expected of a piano-bass-drums trio. The past 15 years have seen the genre-smashing band create a distinctive and original repertoire of inventive and exciting original music, along with iconoclastic covers of artists as divergent as Nirvana, Neil Young, and Radiohead. Earlier this year, the acclaimed trio took on one of the most influential works of the 20th Century, Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring (Sony Music Masterworks). Saxophonist Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the ‘90s and has established himself as one of the most consistent and successful bandleaders. He has worked and recorded with many great jazz artists, in various ensemble configurations, for two decades. He looks forward to pushing musical boundaries when he joins forces with his friends and colleagues The Bad Plus in this very special series of concerts.

When Cécile McLorin Salvant arrived at the Kennedy Centre in Washinton, DC to compete in the finals of the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, she was not only the youngest finalist, but also a mystery woman with the most unusual background of any of the participants. When she walked away with first place in the jazz world’s most prestigious contest, the buzz began almost immediately. If anything, it has intensified in the months leading up to the launch of her debut album, WomanChild. “…she has it all. If anyone can extend the lineage of the Big Three - Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald - it is this 23-year-old virtuoso.” - The New York Times NISSEN/SINCLAIR QUARTET: Toronto based professional bassist and TD Jazz Intensive faculty, Soren Nissen, and Toronto based and acclaimed pianist, Ian Sinclair, are excited to return to their home province as co-leaders of the Nissen/Sinclair Quartet. Inspired by the New Orleans brass band tradition, the Heavyweights' original stance keeps one foot firmly rooted in the rich legacy of jazz, while one foot steps forward into the future. Like the music's originators, the Heavyweights are unafraid to incorporate influences from all areas of the musical spectrum, from pop, R&B, and funk hits of the day to original compositions and infectious rhythms of Latin America. Touring across Canada and sharing the stage with such influential groups as The Roots, Trombone Shorty, Galactic and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble has revealed this group as a hard-hitting powerhouse of sound.

AWA R D S

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD: AL MUIRHEAD The Saskatchewan Jazz Festival is proud to present Al Muirhead with the 2015 Special Recognition Award on Friday, June 26th at 9PM at The Bassment.

Born in Regina in 1935, Muirhead first started "fooling around with horns" when he was five or six. By age 12, he was playing in the Regina Symphony Orchestra and stretching his musical muscles by gigging with dance bands, learning everything from military marches to the pop hits of the day.

eventually becoming director of the band himself for a number of years. Growing up as a jazz musician in Saskatchewan, Al recalls regular quintet gigs at the Boat House and performing at a club he and a number of musician friends helped get started called the ‘Attic’ in Regina, as well as regular engagements at Saskatoon’s ‘400 Club’. Al looks fondly back at those times and to many of the musicians he played with such as: Bob Moyer, Allan Vanstone, Len Barbour, Tiny Griner (piano); Walter Hudema, Gordie Brandt (guitar); Boyce McLean, Ron Leduc, Barney Kutz, Gay Rimmer (bass); Jim and Bill Whiteman, Don McSherry, Luke Vancha (drums); Doug Painter, Jim Mitchell, Vern Bell, Bob McInnis (trumpets); Keith Moyer, Hugh Ketcheson, Bobby Klassen, Gord Hammond (sax); and Lorraine Marsh and Pat Steele (vocals).

"They were playing a new style of jazz called bebop, and I became enthralled with it," Muirhead says. “That's where my focus and love has been ever since."

Over the years, Muirhead's career has seen him work with legends such as Guido Basso, Tommy Banks, Diana Krall, P.J. Perry and Dizzy Gillespie. He was the musical director for CBC TV's "On Stage" and played with Banks during the 1988 Winter Olympics. In 2013, he was honoured with the Western Canadian Music Alliance's Heritage Award for mentorship and industrybuilding. You’d think that would be a nice way to wind down a career, but not for Al Muirhead.

In the early 1950’s Al was asked to join Regina’s iconic ‘Hobby Band’ by trumpeter Tony Mildenberger. Over the years, Al stretched out his burgening jazz chops in this ensemble under Regina jazz mainstays including Ross Reibling and Bob Moyer,

After recording on countless projects throughout the years, 2014 marked the release of his first-ever solo album as a leader — the aptly named "It's About Time”. At 79 years old, Al is just getting started!

In his teens, Muirhead began to take notice of Harry James, then Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, Charlie Parker and their contemporaries.

JIM HILL FESTIVAL BUILDER AWARD: DELLA BEAL The Saskatchewan Jazz Festival is proud to present Della Beal with the 2015 Jim Hill Festival Builder Award at 8PM on Saturday, June 27th at the TD Mainstage, Bessborough Gardens.

Della was brought onto the Volunteer Committee Volunteer, and in 1994 she assumed the role of Volunteer Coordinator, which she has expertly done with an smile and good humour for the last 21 years. Now entering her 24th year as a volunteer with the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival the event has become a year round commitment and a major part of her life. Even before I retiring from her ‘regular job’ in 2012 Della would always book holidays to make sure she could be available for the festival. It is for these selfless reasons Della received the Volunteer of the Year Award for the City of Saskatoon in the Arts Category in 2003.

Giving back has been engrained in Della Beal since volunteering with her children throughout their school years and once they graduated, Della wanted to continue volunteering and thought the Jazz festival would be a great event to become part of, so in 1992, she took the plunge and began volunteering. Always eager to jump in when needed, during Della’s first 3 years with the Festival she worked in souvenirs and other positions too numerous to mention. During her first three years,

“I have met so many wonderful people from all walks of life and have made some lifelong friends,” said Della. “Special thanks to my “Broad Squad" ladies for all their help and support, all the coordinators who do a phenomenal job and to the volunteers without whom the festival would not exist and thank you to my kids and grandkids, and festival staff who have all involved me much more than I would have dreamed of as a volunteer.”

The Saskatchewan Jazz Festival is truly honoured to present the Jim Hill Festival Builder Award to Della Beal for her leadership, dedication and generosity.

JAZZ HISTORY

FROM HANDY TO HANCOCK—AN ALL-STAR EP OF JAZZ HISTORY continued from page 19

JAZZ GOES COOL: Miles Davis releases the best selling Jazz album of all time (1959) Many words come to mind when one thinks of Miles Davis. Revolutionary. Fearless. Genius. But perhaps the most apt description for the boldly experimental trumpet player is cool. Ever the creative force, Davis shaped many forms of Jazz over the years, but what he is best known for is establishing Cool Jazz with his landmark album, Birth of the Cool. QUOTED “I'm always thinking about creating. My future starts when I wake up every morning—every day I find something creative to do with my life.” It was with this philosophy that Davis would repeatedly influence the course of Jazz music, moving the genre forward with each album. THROWBACK TRACK Anything from his magnum opus—the understated masterpiece Kind of Blue. FESTIVAL MIXTAPE Mark DeJong Trio, John Pizzarelli or the Bad Plus featuring Joshua Redman. FUN FACT Kind of Blue was recorded in less than seven hours. #degreesofseparation Davis saw the virtuosic John McLaughlin performing at Club Baron in Harlem in 1968, and the rest is history.

JOHN M CL AU GH LI N

MUSICAL MELTING POT: John McLaughlin forms Mahavishnu Orchestra (1970) Listed as one of the greatest guitar players of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, Mclaughlin earned his reputation as a pioneering Jazz Fusion guitarist through his many collaborations with iconic artists in Classical, Flamenco, Funk, Jazz, Pop, R&B, Rock and World music. His career took off the day after he arrived in New York City in 1968 when he found himself recording with Miles Davis on the genre-defining masterwork, In a Silent Way. He would go on to play on many of Davis’ albums, becoming part of the band until he left in 1970 to form his super group, Mahivishnu Orchestra. His formidable ability to weave genres was never better showcased than in this ground-breaking project—a highly original sonic melting pot of Electric Jazz, Rock, Funk and traditional East Indian music. Although his roots have always remained in Jazz, one speculates that his years spent collaborating have inspired his own eclectic, genre-blending musical output—making him the ultimate Fusion artist. THROWBACK TRACK Meeting of the Spirits by Mahivishnu Orchestra. FESTIVAL MIXTAPE Take a world-tour of genres and try Hilario Duran, Kneebody, The Steadies or Michael Franti. FUN FACT In 1964, McLaughlin gave guitar lessons to Led Zepplin’s Jimmy Page. QUOTED “At the risk of sounding hopelessly romantic, love is the key element. I really love to play with different musicians who come from different cultural backgrounds.” #degreesofseparation For a number of years McLaughlin and Herbie Hancock played together in Davis’ eponymous quintet.

HERBIE HANCOCK

Many other artists and songs have had a profound effect on Jazz music, what would you add to the list? Tweet us @saskjazz

SCAT GOES SCRATCH: Herbie Hancock releases Future Shock (1983) At the age of 11, the prodigious Herbie Hancock performed a Mozart piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Twelve years later, he released his aptly titled debut album Taking Off, and began a five-year stint in Miles Davis’ renowned quintet. Over the next two decades, Hancock was at the forefront of Jazz-Funk Fusion in the 1970s; in the 1980s he began including elements of Urban, R&B and Electronic music. In 1983 he released his influential GRAMMY award-winning album Future Shock, with the lead single Rockit becoming an international hit. The track was the first song in history to feature a turntablist. Grandmixer D.ST. “played the turntable” and modeled the sounds he created after Ella Fitzgerald’s scatting. With this trailblazing album and his long list of critically acclaimed works, Hancock continues to influence scores of musicians across a variety of genres from Jazz to Pop to Hip-Hop. THROWBACK TRACK Get a dose of break dancing robots from the Rockit music video. FESTIVAL MIXTAPE Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Funk Hunters featuring Chali 2na, The Roots, Wyclef Jean. FUN FACT Rockit was featured in the final runway scene of the blockbuster movie Zoolander. QUOTED “It's not exclusive, but inclusive, which is the whole spirit of jazz.”
