Preben Vogt from Granly Diesel finds that DanFish attracts a broader spectrum of visitors than before.

37 companies holding 63 meetings A number of Chinese companies have made their way to Aalborg with a view to reaching partnership agreements with a number of Danish companies. In some cases, the Chinese presence may even lead to the sale of Danish companies. "They all express an interest in buying Danish technology and know-how, and even in buying companies," says Hanne Bregendahl Pihl on stand C238, where the Enterprise Europe Network is doing its best to sell quality time to companies in the shape of 20-minute sessions, at which two parties can discuss opportunities to cooperate. On Thursday, there will be 63 meetings between 37 different companies. Each meeting is a 20-minute session, comprising a presentation of each of the participants and chat about how each is interested in the other. Matchmaking takes only 20 minutes. Companies have registered in advance but it is still possible to book meetings on Thursday. "If you are flexible as to the timing, you can still book today," says Hanne Bregendahl Pihl.

9, 10 & 11 OCTOBER 2013

DanFish is now broader More are ready to trade today than in the early years, says loyal exhibitor

O

ne of the most stalwart exhibitors at DanFish International is Granly Diesel on stand A 130. This Esbjerg-based company has had a stand in the same place at DanFish for almost as long as the trade show has existed. Vice President Preben Vogt from Granly Diesel believes that, even though the trade show, which was held for the first time in 1974, has not changed much, he can see that it has developed over the years. "It's no secret that there were more

fishermen here in the past. Another difference is that many of the fishermen who do attend the trade show today take it as a opportunity to get a special offer. At Granly Diesel, we know that they are more ready to trade today than they were in the past. Back then, more often than not, they came along for a chat." Fewer deals were settled at the show in the past than is the case today. "There are some who wait for the trade show to make planned purchases. They shop around to see where they can get the best deal. It's fair enough and it does make the trade show more fun," says Preben Vogt, who is also aware of other new trends today compared to the past. "Back in the day, more or less everyone we met at the trade show was a fisher-

man. Today we meet customers from all the different branches in the maritime sector. The trade show has also become more international. We meet far more Norwegians and Swedes than before. The trade show has become broader," says Preben Vogt, who has also seen changes in the way Granly Diesel takes part at DanFish. "Things have changed for us too. In the old days we were an unknown quantity. Today we have a well-known brand and an excellent reputation in our industry. This means that lots of our regular customers come to visit us, bringing new customers along with them," says Preben Vogt.

Companies are quick off the mark "We booked hotel rooms and our stands for this year's DanFish trade show during the 2011 show. We are quick off the mark when we prepare for the trade show," says Gitte Kronbøge from West Diesel Engineering A/S. She has to manage an important logistics task, when the DanFish trade show looms in the diary. "In early spring we have presentations and brochures made. Working with the manufacturers, we determine which products and which new items we will have with us at the trade show," says Gitte Kronbøge, who subsequently invites customers and gets advertising and sales material designed. Gitte Kronbøge is also responsible for producing a drawing to show how the two West Diesel Engineering A/S stands at the show will look. "The price per square metre is high so we have to optimise every centimetre,

presenting the products in the best possible way," says Gitte Kronbøge, who also has to find space for a bar area, where she and her colleagues can chat more informally with customers. However, there is much more preparation still to come. Gitte also has to order the motors and other products for the trade show. She then arranges for them to be shipped to Aalborg and that are put in the right place on the stand. Technically advanced motors don't just come in a box. They come as a package which includes specialists. "We have to keep tabs on the manufacturers' representatives, who are also present on our stand. They come from several countries, including Italy, France and the Netherlands," says Gitte Kronbøge, who also coordinates West Diesel Engineering A/S' manning on the stand, where there are at least four staff on hand to meet

customers at all times. Everything has to be packed Friday evening but there's no guarantee that all the motors have to be returned to Esbjerg. "We sell some and they have to be

shipped to the customer. Actually, one Mitsubishi motor on the stand was sold even before the start of the trade show," states Gitte Kronbøge.

The men behind DanFish and DanAqua

At its opening on Wednesday, NEWS was able to get an up-to-themoment snapshot of the presidium and steering committee for DanFish and DanAqua as well as alderman Thomas Kastrup-Larsen and MEP Ole Christensen, who opened the exhibitions. Unfortunately, Dan Fish and DanAqua’s patron Prince Joachim is unable to attend this year’s exhibitions. Popular VIP Programme attracts affluent visitors

A You are at a totally sold-out trade show!

T

here are broad smiles everywhere at Aalborg Congress & Culture Centre. We're pleased to announce that we are welcoming 300 exhibitors from 20 different countries to a totally sold-out trade show. We have sold 285 stands to DanFish and 25 to DanAqua. For the last 14 days all the primary stand areas have been sold out, so our sales team, Lasse Holsteen Jessen and Else Herfort, have left no stone unturned in their attempts to

find extra space for all interested exhibitors. For example, they succeeded at the last minute in finding space for Assens Skibsværft (shipyard), when – only last week – a group of ten exhibitors from the Emilia Romagna region of Italy had to defer their participation to a future trade show. Other companies, which expressed a desire to exhibit, have accepted alternative stand sites, such as the Europahallen foyer, where, in this year's new layout, we have the Visitors' Restaurant, VIP lounge, wellness area and transit to the café on

head of this year's DanFish and DanAqua trade shows, a potential 400 stakeholders expressed an interest in taking part in the VIP Programme, which Aalborg Congress and Culture Centre has offered international purchasers from e.g. major shipping companies since 1996. Even though the VIP Programme budget is just under DKK 1 million, the funding did not stretch to offering so many people three free nights at a hotel, a VIP dinner,

reception and free admission to both trade shows. One hundred VIPs were identified by a partnership comprising the Danish Export Association and ambassadors, whose companies are acquainted with key personnel, who have been invited to spend three days in Aalborg. In 2013 there are VIPs from more than 20 different countries, including China, Russia, Finland, Bangladesh, Canada, Greenland, the Netherlands, Japan, Lithuania, the Philippines, USA, Hungary, Germany, Morocco and Poland.

the first floor. We are also very pleased to say welcome back to a large number of DanFish exhibitors. DanFish has ACCC's highest percentage of reorders. Just under 70 percent of exhibitors make a return visit to DanFish. ACCC is looking forward to three full and active trade show days with about 12,000 visitors from more than 40 different countries.

It´s a hard days work to be ready for the exhibition in Aalborg.

Blue Monday in Aalborg This Monday morning, a procession of 15 juggernauts was lined up from Vesterbro, around the corner and all the way up to the exhibition halls. Orange forklift trucks buzzed like bees around a hive. Blue Water Shipping has been the trade show's official freight forwarding company since 2001. The international shippers have been preparing transportation and receiving freight for the DanFish and DanAqua shows since the spring. On Monday things got off to a flying start with a

massive invasion of blue lorries. Two freight forwarding agents, Lars Kristiansen and Mads S. Kristensen, arrived at the Organiser's Office on Sunday to set up the systems in readiness for "Blue Monday", when most of the freight arrives in Aalborg. Many exhibitors have elected to use Blue Water Shipping. Others take care of transportation themselves. In addition to bringing freight into Aalborg and delivering it to the appropriate stands, Blue Water is also responsible for disposing of packaging waste. There are

Danish and international media have discovered there are good stories to be found within sales and services for the fishing industry. At the opening ceremony on Wednesday, there were no fewer than eleven different media represented with, among others, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), Nordjyske Stiftstidende, TV2Nord, TV2 MidtVest, Industri-nyt, Fiskerbladet, Fiskeritidende,

Skibsrevyen, Maritimt Magasin and several freelance journalists from Sweden and Denmark. Denmark wins major fish farming contract in Vietnam The Vietnamese are hoping to convert their fish farming to ecofriendly methods in line with the Danish model The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development put a contract out to tender in August: "Developing and operating a de-

monstration grow-out farm for sustainable and advanced Pangasius aqua-culture in Vietnam". As the DanAqua trade show opened on Wednesday, the VIDATEC partnership an-nounced that Denmark had won the tender, which will initially be worth DKK 4.5 million.

Exporting Danish know-how

The objective of the project is to demonstrate that it is possible, using just a few technological aids, to in-

crease production and minimise environmental impact at the same time. Danish fish farming has progressed from conventional river, pond or ditch fish farms to the socalled "model fish farms", i.e. systems which either mechanically or biologically purify drainage water, which is then recirculated. The Danish ex-perience of this progression will now be put to the test – to see if it can be applied to conditions in Vi-etnam. Vietnam has fish ponds covering an area of more than 1

hectare, water temperatures above 30°C and species of fish which not only breathe via gills but which can also take in oxygen from the water sur-face.

Equipment worth millions

The Danish technologies which will be applied in Vietnam include water quality monitoring instruments, aeration and automated feeding systems, sedimentation equipment and pumps. The total delivery from Denmark will amount to just less

than DKK 3 million. The contract also includes a further DKK 1 million to cover the cost of training local fish farmers, and travel and accommodation for the Danish experts. Finally, a sum of just under DKK 450,000 is reserved for designing and building the ideal fish farm, the cost of which will be equally divided between the Danish and Vietnamese participants.

Vietnamese fish farmers believe it when they see it! "Danish participants are optimistic about this particular pilot project," explains Jesper Heldbo from branch organisation AquaCircle. - The Vietnamese fish farming sector is highly competitive and fish farmers' margin between sales price and production costs is often minimal. Danish companies believe that it is possible to considerably reduce feed consumption if you improve living conditions for the fish by optimising water quality. As fish feed accounts for up to 80 percent of production costs, there are in fact very big savings to be made," says Jesper Heldbo.

Experience from the Vietnamese market indicates, however, that normal sales tactics do not necessarily lead to orders there. The fish farmers have to see things for themselves before they are convinced that it is possible to achieve results. Seeing is believing! The mentality of the Vietnamese fish farmers and their Danish counterparts is otherwise very similar. Both nationalities are keen to try things for themselves and will often opt for step-by-step developments. This is precisely why there are very high hopes for this pilot project. - In 18 months' time, when it is proven that Danish technology can produce better profits, reduce en-

vironmental impact, and improve productivity, fish welfare and better quality end-products," Jesper Heldbo from AquaCircle predicts, "it will be the right moment for Danish companies to push for deeper market penetration in the Vietnamese market." In the wake of many years of intensive development support from many different countries, the situation has changed for the Vietnamese. They have moved from aid to trade. If Denmark acts wisely, our initial inroads into the Vietnamese market may not only safeguard Danish jobs but will, in the long term, also create new jobs in Danish manufacturing.

N

EVERY TIME Miljørigtige dieselmotorer ™

Det Vietnamesiske Landbrugsministerium, udbød i august licitationen: "Developing and operating a

demon-stration grow-out farm for sustainable and advanced Pangasius aquaculture in Vietnam".
