Glow like the sun
Don’t let your summer holiday ruin your beauty regime – follow our top tips for staying gorgeous through your break – and long after Take it from the top It’s vital to protect your locks from the harsh effects of UV rays, salty seas, and drying winds while you’re on holiday. This is especially true if your hair is coloured as nothing fades colour quicker than the sun. Try Ojon’s Color Sustain Protecting Cream (1 £22, 0870 034 2454) or Paul Mitchell Color Protect Locking Spray (7 £11.95, paul-mitchell.co.uk) both of which give great leave-in protection. Forever Living’s Aloe First spray (4 £15.82, forevershopnow.com) is a sunscreen for hair as well as a soothing aftersun – an excellent dual product for those who are travelling light. Those with long hair need to take extra care. Melissa Hill from Stone Bridge Hair Accessories advises, ‘To keep long hair looking healthy, wear it up or tied back when you’re on the beach. Avoid ponytail elastics as they can cut into your hair and cause split ends.’ Try one of Stone Bridge’s cute Starboard Bow Barettes (£29, stone-bridge.co.uk) for a fashionable, nautical look. Beat limpness caused by heat with Paul Mitchell Lemon Sage Thickening Spray (£7.50 for a handy handbag size). ‘Lightly spritz it on to dry hair for instant volume and clarifying boost,’ says Nayla Merchant, creative director at Paul Mitchell.

Face the sun It is of course vital to protect your face, neck and décolleté from the sun, and make no bones about it – SPF15 simply isn’t enough, especially not under holiday sun. Temple Spa Self Defence (£33, templespa.com) is a lightweight SPF 30 with a silky texture that leaves no heavy or white residue. It can be used under moisturiser or make-up or by itself. As well as an SPF of 25 Kerstin Florian’s SpaSun Serum (2 £41, kerstinflorian.co.uk) contains anti-oxidants for double protection, and anti-inflammatories to keep hot and sensitive skin soothed and cooled. SkinCeuticals Sheer Mineral UV Defense (£28, skinceuticals.co.uk) provides a whopping SPF of 50 with a transparent, 100 per cent mineral filter and is completely chemical and paraben free. Refresh and moisturise skin and hair on the go with Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi Moisture Mist (8 £5.75). Kirsty Mears, senior creative stylist, says, ‘Keep a bottle in the fridge for a refreshing way of hydrating your hair and skin. Or use it on the plane to refresh make-up, tame frizz and add moisture to dry, thirsty locks.’

Gorgeous all over Whether you’re a tan junkie or totally sun averse, everybody wants smooth, glowing skin in summer. Li’Tya Mother of Pearl Body Polish (£42.50, litya-spa.com) uses crushed Mother of Pearl to smooth and renew the skin surface, Tasmanian kelp to nourish and marine collagen to strengthen. Lush’s Buffy Body Butter (£9.45, lush.co.uk) is a combination soap and scrub in one bar – great for those travelling light. Cheat a summer glow with Sasy’n’Savy’s paraben free Silk Shimmer Body Lotion (10 £28, sasynsavy. co.uk), which contains aloe vera and plant derived extracts to smooth and soften dry body skin and leaves a gorgeous sexy shimmer. If you’re a fan of gradual tanning body lotions, but not so keen on the smell, you’ll love Nougat’s new Moisturising Body Crèmes with Gradual Tan (3 £15, nougatlondon.co.uk), available in three different fragrances.

Essential extras Brighten up your day at the beach with some cheerful colour cosmetics. Paint finger and toenails with pops of colour – MeMeMe’s Summer Brights Nail Varnish Set (£14.99, find-me-a-gift.co.uk) contains four 12ml bottles of the latest green, orange, yellow and pink. Or top off one of Jessica’s flirty new brights (9 £9.75 each, 0845 217 1360) with their black topcoat that ‘cracks’on the nail, mimicking the latest animal-print trend. Talking of which, grab yourself a pair of Beach Comfys (£29, lovethoseshoes.com) in snow leopard or zebra print for pedicures on the go – these fab flipflops feature individual toe separators and are great for on the beach or in the villa. Looking good on the beach requires makeup that stays put. If you can’t bear to be seen without mascara and liner, consider a longer lasting solution. Semi-permament makeup artist Tracie Giles (traciegiles.co.uk) says, ‘Thanks to new techniques and treatments, semi permanent make up, if undertaken by a skilled practitioner, will look flawless and is a fully waterproof alternative to standard mascaras, eyeliners and lipsticks.’ Or try some eyelash extensions. ‘Extensions are individually applied to the base of the natural eyelashes and stay in place for up to four weeks,’ says eyelash extension expert Jinny Coffey (jinnylash.com). ‘They’ll stay put even when swimming.’ If all that sounds a bit too drastic, try Jemma Kidd’s Lasting Tint Semi-permanent, lash colour (11 £15, spacenk.co.uk) which stains lashes and lasts up to 24 hours. Protect your extremities while you’re on the beach too – Lypsyl (5 £1.49, Boots) comes in trusty Original or five different fruit flavours –and keep fresh and fragranced with Lush’s Karma Spritzer (6 £20), with essences of patchouli, orange oil and elemi.
