Merry and bright: RSH Christmas lights switch-on
The RSH Estates Team’s Christmas lights switch-on took place at the start of December.
Thank you to everyone involved. The weather didn’t dampen the spirits and Captain Tom’s Garden was
lit up with an array of beautiful decorations and colours.
Finley-Jay, who has recently featured in the news for his kindness in putting together special bags of treats for the paramedics, was invited to switch on the lights. Thank you Finley-Jay!
Spreading festive joy
Our Executive Team has been visiting colleagues throughout December, across all our sites, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and handing out festive treats. Thank you to you all for all your hard work.
Yule never guess who won SaTH’s first Bake Off?!
This week we held the first SaTH Star Baker competition. There were some amazing entries across both sites and competition was fierce.
The judging team at PRH consisted of Jo Williams, Chief Executive, Dr John Jones, Medical Director and, perhaps the most qualified, Francesca Brackley from the PRH Catering Team.
At RSH, Jo Williams was joined by Helen Troalen, Director of Finance and Joe Warwick, Commercial Catering Manager.
Our winners
Good things come to those who bake!
The PRH winner, with two amazing, life-like, delicious cakes was Sharron Perrins.
The RSH winner was Aribah Naveed.
Thank you to all who entered and brought in some amazing baked goods.
Christmas Carols
Local choir group, The Phoenix Singers, treated colleagues and patients to some Christmas carols on Thursday.
Starting off in Captain Tom’s Courtyard at PRH, they raised the roof before hot-footing it over to RSH to sing for the crowds in the Mytton Restaurant.
A huge thank you to the choir for bringing some festive joy to the hospitals.
Roast turkey with all the trimmings? Yes please!
Last week colleagues were treated to a Christmas roast in the Mytton Restaurant along with Christmas carols played on the steel drum.
Thank you to the Catering Team and Rick the drummer for hosting such a wonderful festive celebration.
Put a sock in it!
We had so many wonderful entries for the Christmas Sock Day competition. It was hard to choose a winner, but SaTH Charity managed to whittle it down to one.
The winners are… The Stroke Rehab Therapy Team! (pictured top left)
Thank you to everyone who entered the Christmas decorations competition.
The entries were fantastic – so a huge thank you to everyone who has made both hospital sites so
festive for patients and colleagues. The entries have been whittled down to three finalists, and you can vote for your winner here
The winner will be announced in the New Year.
We asked you who you would like to nominate for bringing the most joy to colleagues or patients this Christmas. We had over 60 nominations!

Jingle ball the way
Children having day surgery at the elective hub had a visit from a group of footballers from Cross Bar Group on Friday 13 December, to give presents to each child. They spent time speaking to the children and everyone enjoyed the visit.
Christmas Smile Project
The Sterile Services Team at Queensway is supporting the Christmas Smile Project this year.
The charity provides gifts to local children, families and vulnerable adults who are living in difficult circumstances and may not receive any other gifts.
There is an Amazon wish list where you can order gifts directly to be delivered to Christmas Smile HQ.
You can find more information on the project, what it does and who it supports on their website: https://www.christmassmile. org.uk/
Santa hike up the Wrekin
Twenty-six people and three dogs hiked the Wrekin to raise funds for the SaTH Dementia Appeal.
All hikers wore Christmas themed hats and jumpers for the hike on Sunday December 15 and £324 was raised in total. They were rewarded at the top with a cup of hot chocolate and mince pie, which were donated by a local company.
Karen Breese, Dementia Care Clinical Specialist, said: “This was a great morning, thank you. What a wonderful way to raise money for our Dementia appeal.
“The money will go to purchase activities and comfort soft dogs/cats’ and dolls. These will be of enormous benefit for people living with dementia who are inpatients with us and maybe finding the experience so difficult and confusing.”
Chaplains in Christmas sing song
The Chaplaincy Team was out and about on Ward 7, 9 and 11 at PRH and Ward 23 and 26 at RSH singing Christmas songs to patients.
It was lovely to see patients and staff singing along to Christmas favourites such as Silent Night, Away in a Manger and clapping along to Feliz Navidad.
Feedback from patients was positive and included “this should happen every week”, “it’s really cheered me up”, “it made me smile and I don’t think I’ve smiled since coming to hospital”.
Kevin from the Chaplaincy Team is pictured with some of Ward 7 team and their songsheets.
PRH Theatres Christmas Party
The PRH Theatres Christmas party was Bollywood themed and Sandy, one of the longest-serving nurses, and a group of our nurses educated in India, got together to throw a spectacular event for the team’s surgeons, admin colleagues, nurses and anaesthetists. Food was made by housekeeper, Joe, and there were lots of games and dancing.

Donation to the Neonatal Unit
Julie Blackford, a talented local knitter, has donated 22 books and matching knitted characters to the Neonatal Unit at PRH.
Tesco Extra in Wellington also donated gift bags for the children and their families.
Santa flew in to PRH
Santa flew in to visit the Children’s Ward at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford aboard an RAF Shawbury helicopter.
He swapped his sleigh for a H135 Juno helicopter and waved to children at local schools as he flew through the skies of Telford. He touched down to be greeted by excited patients and staff.
For the second year in a row, SaTH Charity and RAF Shawbury helped Santa deliver gifts to patients on the Children’s Ward and also visited parents on the Neonatal Unit.
Santa was accompanied on his visit by keen staff volunteers and RAF students.

Thank you for your support, your generosity has been amazing!
of losing physical strength through being ill, injured or not being active and in a hospital environment this can be after long periods of inactivity or bed rest. Why does this matter in the context of donating clothing? Long periods of time in bed wearing a hospital gown is not good for recovery. Providing patients with comfortable, warm clothes during their admission could motivate them to get up out of bed and mobilise plus it’s a great way of keeping time and not getting confused about day and night.

Thank you
I felt compelled to write an email after my mum’s recent A&E visit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. I’d just like to say thank you so much. My mum and dad both went after concerns that my mum’s VP Shunt was damaged. They spent a considerable amount of time with an emergency doctor there who my dad said was absolutely brilliant and it’s probably the best experience with a doctor they’ve ever had.
They never once felt like a burden and they were taken seriously. The reassurance they got, as well as the precious time - that I know all doctors are limited on - was really appreciated and they’ve come away really happy, and thankful. So once again, thank you. We, as a family, cannot fault the service my mum received and we’re just ever so grateful.
