At the Sawmill

Our dead spruce logs are "bucked" orcut to length and carried by articulatedloaders to the sawmill infeed deck. They are advance to the carriage whereour sawyer quickly assesses what canbe produced from logs that may rangein diameter from 6" to 36''. He must"see" rectangles to be yielded from acircle, in sizes that fit our many productrequirements. The rectangles he cutswith an old-fashioned circle saw millproceed via roller conveyors through orpast edgers and slab recovery saws tobecome "cants" or timbers destined tobe house logs, decking, siding, rafters, other finished products.

Those "cants" which will be house logsare moisture tested, every piece! Ifthey meet our dryness standard, theyare marked as "dry" and packaged

to proceed to the planer mill. If theyalmost, but not quite meet the standard, they are stacked on our drying yard ina desert environment, and they waitfor weeks or months to be retested. Ifthey are wet, they immediately returnthrough the mill to be sawed into thinnerlumber products, so they can neverbecome a log in the wall of a home.

Planing

The dry cants are moved to the planingmill, where they are end trimmed, thengo through a massive 16,000-poundplaner which "sizes': cuts tonguesand grooves, and shapes or "profiles"the exterior faces of "D" or SmokeyMountain logs. At this point {and at otherprevious points) grading occurs. Ourgraders are certified through TPI {TimberProducts Inspection), a 3rd party gradingagency. After passing strict criteria,

SADDLE NOTCH

Butt and Pass

This is the standard corner design used in our published pricing. Butt & Pass corner construction can be used with all of our house logs except the Swedish Cope. The butt and pass stacking is alternated with each course. Our polyurethane caulk is applied in these butt joints as well as between each course.

Dovetail

This type of corner is offered in all of our Smokey Mountain sizes and all of our "D-Shaped" house logs except the 6 x 6. Building with this type of corner requires a detailed cutting order so that butt joints are minimized and staggered in the log wall. A special designed jig is used to make these cuts assuring a consistent, tight fitting corner. Our polyurethane caulk is applied in the butt joints as well as between each course.

Saddle Notch

Saddle Notch corners are standard on Swedish Cope house log designs. This type of corner is necessary with a full round house log to assure a perfectly fitting corner. Again, special tooling is required to make these accurate cuts. We have the capacity to also Saddle Notch our O-Shaped and Smokey Mountain designs.

Choosing the right house log

With so many choices, which log do you choose to build your dream home with?

For those customers wanting a true round log look, they choose the Swedish Cope design, offering the full-round appearance in and out.

Most folks seem to have a very definite opinion of which log they prefer. The "D-Shaped" house log being our "tried and true" offers you a rounded exterior surface, while maintaining a flat inner surface. A flat inner surface

hewing or draw-knifing are also offered for either surface.

The Smokey Mountain house log has a very definite tie to colonial times and Appalachian construction. This

This house log comes in a variety of sizes. It also can be used to create the dramatic sculpted corner. A more hand-crafted appearance can be achieved by draw-knifing the surfaces of the Swedish Cope log.
