I don’t know about you, but growing up for me meant many things, of which one involved creating this magazine, a domain of which I can be read, not just with words but images projecting what I feel, makes this world such an amazing place to live in. In this foreign land Philippines, of which I call my second home, I understand a little more of the essence of those words, in a different perspective altogether. The formula to a perfectly constructed visual isn’t in softness of the textile, or the bone structure of the gorgeous model wearing it, but the accumulation of it all, perfectly blending with on another. I might not wear dresses day in day out, but in my head where it matters most, and in the pages of this beautifully constructed magazine, the new team put together, wears that one dress that matters most. With that, I bring to you the new SAUCEink Magazine.

Q: Can you share the background of your blog with us? My blog, entitled JESSTHEGRRL, is a pun of Just The Girl. I see myself as a regular girl who you can see around your neighborhood. However, I’m also the edgy girl when it comes to personality and fashion, so I replaced “Just” with “Jess” and gave myself “GRRL”, the growling sound made by a tiger which represents fierceness. Q: Why did you decide to start a blog? I have always loved street fashion, music, and the arts. Ever since I was a teenager, I’ve always been known to have a unique personality. However, I never thought of starting a blog because I lacked the courage and confidence to do so at that time. I built a career in graphic design right after graduating from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. After three years in the industry, I decided that I should seriously rethink my passions, so I quit my job and started this blog where I can share my personal fashion outfits, music, and arts.

IT’S OK TO BE WEIRD. AT LEAST YOU ARE TRUE TO YOURSELF.

Q: What is your blog about? Expect my blog to include: • Mostly posts about personal fashion styling which features 90’s street style, pastel goth, boho, minimalist, and urban looks. • Posts about indie music and interviews with indie artists. • Posts about art galleries, events, and some of my personal artwork in the near future.

FASHION SNIPPETS: HOW DO I DEFINE FASHION

By JANELLE YAU

When I was six years old, fashion would easily equate to butterfly clips. When I was sixteen years old, fashion would equate to a closet full of black tees and a lot of studs. Now that I’m twenty years old, I realized that fashion is so much more than just clips, studs, and even brands. As Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street. Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” The most common misconception about fashion is that it is just about the clothes people wear, how to look good, and so on. But after working for the number one teen magazine in the Philippines, contributing for a famous local blogger’s style book, and occasionally styling models and actresses, I realized that fashion is so much more than just putting on a pretty dress. In fact, there is a huge world behind fashion; a world where anything is possible and breaking the rules is actually highly encouraged. In a world where everyone is either dictated by the rules of the government, or the rules of the society, fashion is an amazing breather for people to stop thinking for a moment about the different laws laid down by the norm, or the media, follow their heart, and sass the world with their personal flair. With that, Coco is right. Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only because fashion is a culture, it is a lifestyle. Apart from that, fashion is a utopian world where anything is possible, breaking the rules is widely applauded, and a black and grey tee shirt tucked under a purple ball skirt, matched with a pair of the highest pink stilettos you can find is a Carrie Bradshaw masterpiece.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK

For Work The Boho look is a mix of casual and ethnic elements that usually overlaps with the romantic and eclectic look. Go for pieces with wild prints in classic cuts for a bold, but office appropriate look.

For Play

Boho style is all about being fun, relax, and still look good. Throw out your maxi dresses and pair them with the flattest sandals you can find, or the highest heels you have, and channel your inner Rachel Zoe.

Gi r l s T e l l T he msel v es Af t er A B r eak u p . Let’s face it; at one point in our crazy beautiful lives, we have tried to deny the feelings that keep creeping into our hearts and minds. Nowadays people find it easier and opt to lie to themselves than to face the reality because then there might be a chance that our hearts will follow what our minds are saying. No matter how good you say you are in handling break ups there is always going to be one lie that you will tell yourself to convince yourself that you are finally over him. Here are five common lies that women tell themselves after a breakup.

While lying to yourself, and painting a portrait of a perfect life may make you happier than facing the reality, you owe it to yourself .to be completely and brutally honest with yourself. Although it is easier to escape, the only way you can really move on is by accepting the truth.

“ HE’S A MISTAKE! HE

WASN’T EVEN MY TYPE!

“ MAYBE WE CAN STILL BE FRIENDS.

“ I’m FINE! I’m OVER IT! SWEAR!

Girl, it’s okay to binge watch The Notebook with a huge bucket of chocolate ice cream after a breakup. Seriously, no one’s judging.

ANYTHING SERIOUS.

Remember: if people can remain friends after a breakup either they are still in love with each other, and they don’t know it yet, or they were never into each other anyway.

“ I WASN’T LOOKING FOR

Proclaiming that your last love was a mistake is one fat lie, and you know it. If strangers can have a huge effect in your life as Mitch Albom says so, surely people you were in a relationship with will have a huge impact in your life. Relationships, whether good or bad are never a mistake because it helps you discover a side of yourself you never would have seen if it weren’t for the person you were with.

IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Claiming that you weren’t looking for anything serious as soon as things go sour is another common lie that people tell themselves after a bad breakup to preserve one’s ego and feelings.

“ I DIDN’T REALLY LIKE HIM “

Denying that your temporary madness for X never existed is easier said than done. This is the most common lie people who are trying to move on and save face after a breakup, or a “breakup” tell themselves and their friends.

MAIN FE ATURE

SPIN CITY The world is no easy feat, BUT

with the perfect mix of sass, curiosity, and fearlessness has managed to make being a blogger, DJ, and entrepreneur rolled up in one that seems as easy as counting 1-2-3.

SASS

At a young age of twelve, Peggy Heng, or better known as DJ Dowager, entered the blogging bandwagon.Although she discontinued her blog after it drew her spotlight that she didn’t want at that time, she later on re-opened her blog. By not conforming to the traditional ways of blogging, and her to-diefor style, ThyDowager, instantly became a success. Since then, Dowager has established herself as one of the most successful and famous blogs in Singapore.

CUR IOSITY Unlike other icons, Dowager refuses to rely on what she already knows, and stick to what she’s good at. Instead, she craves for something new and dares not just to enter, but conquer territories she has never set foot on. Prior to becoming a successful blogger, Dowager entered the modelling industry, and pageant industry. She entered various pageant shows and bagged several envy-worthy awards. She was also a public relations executive, a cabin crew, an entrepreneur, and so much more!

I like to take on many different challenges and even careers.

FEAR LESS Don’t be fooled by this woman’s angelic face because behind it is a woman with a thirst for adventure. A lover of extreme sports, motor racing, rock climbing, and scuba diving are just some of the activities she enjoys doing on her past time. But what makes Dowager a fearless woman is when she decided to carpe diem, and enter the male-centric spinning industry.

M AY 2 0 1 5

During her starting years as a DJ, Dowager had to face constant criticisms because the industry wasn’t quite sure if a model/blogger has what it takes to become a DJ. But instead of dwelling, or ignoring the criticisms, Dowager took them all in, and used the critiques to prove her critics wrong, and become the best version of herself.

efore you started your “blogger career” what were you doing?

PEGGY: I was still a student in Temasek Poly before I began blogging professionally. How many years has it been since you started blogging professionally? PEGGY: Woah… that would be about 8 years by now! You guys are making me sound old; I started off really young. When, how and why did you start blogging? PEGGY: I took an interest in blogging when I was 12 and jumped right onto the bandwagon because everyone was trying it out. It was more like a diary where I shared my life with my friends and schoolmates. But I got sick of all the attention and decided to shut it off at a later part (it wasn’t paying me yet!) What do you think helped propelled your “blogging career”? When do you think was the peak of your career? PEGGY: I think it’s my ever-changing progression in life that intrigues my readers. I like to take on many different challenges and even careers. Most people knew me when I started off as a model, but I later went on to become a public relations executive, had my own boutique; flown as a cabin crew, then back to the grounds as a Forex broker. And today, I’m an entrepreneur and DJ. I guess people are just constantly wondering, what’s next?

Can I say that I have not met my peak yet? I hope to be better!

How do you handle negative comments, criticisms and negative feedbacks? PEGGY: No one was born to take criticisms like a breeze. I know, most influencers advise people to ignore the criticisms because they don’t matter. But I say take it all in, breathe and digest them all. Filter the constructive ones and bear them in mind. The one that listens always ends up gaining the most.

M AY 2 0 1 5

Where do you think you stand in the “blogosphere”? PEGGY: Being one of the pioneers in the blogosphere, I would hopefully grow to become a mentor to provide my best guidance towards upcoming bloggers and even marketers.

If someone plans to follow your footsteps, what advice would you give them?

What fashion/beauty advice would you give to Singaporeans who are keen to look better?

PEGGY: Dream big, but you have to set realistic goals to achieve it. Keep working on it and never give up.

PEGGY: “The best style in the world is the one that looks good on you.” So be adventurous. Look around, explore and be willing to try out different styles. Keep an open mind, that way, you will find a style that best suits yourself.

Queen of Substance was the pageant that left me with the strongest impression and possibly helped shape who I am today. I was humbled to be the youngest title winner, amongst many other successful female entrepreneurs. Their credentials were so remarkable; I felt the need to strive in my businesses as well. Being a beauty queen and youth role model, do you get pressured to achieve more?

PEGGY: I think I pressure myself more than they actually do! I’m someone that gets bored of life easily and there’s always this constant need to keep challenging myself. Where do you get inspiration for your fashion choices?

PEGGY: Everyone. I’m always on a look out on the streets, magazines, TV, Internet etc. My ultimate fashion icon will always be Victoria Beckham though; she makes her entire family looks good too! If you had to pick between music and fashion; which would you pick? Why? PEGGY: That’s like asking me to pick between my father and my mother. I can’t, they are both essential to my life!

90

So, tell us about a day in the life of a model DJ! PEGGY: It might come as a surprise to many, but I’m actually an entrepreneur by day. Behind the limelights, I run a few Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) – a photography, videography and design company, beauty business, open concept KTV pub, and etc. DJ-ing is really just a passion to me, I would take time off my work to go through latest music trends and create refreshing mashups as I truly indulge in the hype watching the crowd pump to my beats!

Why did you start DJ-ing? PEGGY: Actually, I’ve never planned to be a DJ. It all began when a DJ friend of mine asked if I’m interested to learn and possibly debut together with him. I thought, why not? I’ve always loved musical instruments and dreamt that I could play them all! However, due to circumstances, I was not able to learn them when I was younger. Now, given this opportunity, how could I say no?

“Carpe Diem”,

Q: What is your impression of Singaporean guys? What are their plus points and what can they improve on?

“Carpe Diem” as I’ve always believed. Along the journey of becoming a DJ, I met the boss and long lost friend of my current DJ-ing agency. We caught up, one thing led to another, and he offered to groom me. You could say it’s the “Power of the universe” that I became the DJ I am today!

How is it like balancing DJ-ing with blogging? PEGGY: Dj-ing has given me a lot of exposure which also helped in raising recognition in the media and entertainment industry.

PEGGY: I’m only attracted to Singaporean men- the cultured and well-rounded ones that is. I think that not only are they driven in life, but family orientated as well. On the other hand, their success can get the better of them, therefore, it’s extremely important to remain humble.

For you what makes a man a real gentleman? PEGGY: A real gentleman in my opinion, is one who never stop “the chase” even when you’re already together. He will still continue to open car doors for you, take you on dates, plan dinners and give you unexpected surprises. Not because he has to, but because he wants to.

I would say that they (blogging and DJ-ing) are associated especially when I have to dress up and travel for gigs. It makes things easier for me as I’m able to generate content for my lifestyle, fashion, beauty and travel blog through experiences. W W W. F A C E B O O K . Hi my name is Jessica Milner and I’m a DJ from the Philippines. I like fried chicken, good music, and I pretend to be Japanese. Wzup.

to enjoy. I haven’t really gotten bad feedback from clubs and events before (I mean I hope not haha) so I guess I’m a pretty good crowd reader as well.

How do you balance your career (in the nightlife) and personal life? Do you have a day life/job?

What is your guilty pleasure?

I DJ fulltime and I just recently became a part owner of this club called URBN.

Food. Aside from music, I am really passionate about food. If I’m not at the clubs I’m always trying out new restaurants or cooking recipes I found on the Internet.

It’s actually not that hard to balance everything especially when you love what you do and the people around you support you 100%. I just make sure I make time for everything I have/like to do despite my busy schedule so everyone’s happy.

Splurge or save?

Who inspires you the most and why?

How do you define fashion? Fashion is a form of self-expression. For me, it’s showing someone who you are and what you’re about through your clothing choices. It’s like telling someone a little bit about you.

It would definitely be my DJ friends and mom. I love being surrounded by people who are so passionate and talented at what they do. My mom on the other hand has just been supportive from the start and I will love her everyday for letting me go for an unconventional career path.

What do you think is your greatest asset? I guess it’s my versatility as a DJ. I really don’t like sticking to one genre because I feel like there are so many types of music

Both. I find it so chic when people know how to mix and match something from a high-end store and something they plucked out from a street bazaar.

Who’s your fashion icon? If you don’t have one, if you had a fashion icon, who would it be? I guess it would be Japanese artist Yuka Chocomoo. I love her taste and I love that her clothes are predominantly black and white but she still manages to look effortlessly chic.

You also have to invest a lot of time into discovering new music because you don’t want to play what everyone else is playing. You have to make yourself stand out.

When we met, we found out that we had a similar taste in music and style. We tried spinning together for fun, then we realized our strengths combined gave us a better take on mixing. That’s when we decided to start our duo. First we promoted ourselves as Reg x Steph but just recently, we came up with the perfect name – “Everyday People”. It’s actually the only name suggestion that both of us really liked because: 1. It defines who we are – simple, fun and relatable 2. It fits our music style and genre since we can mix different types of sounds. It’s like accepting different tastes of different people!

98

3. It reminds us that no matter where we end up, we are still normal, everyday people. STEPH: I started my career as a DJ two years ago as a solo act through the help of Looper Beat Academy (Now it’s named Bounce Electronic Music and DJ School). Everything started really slow at first, but spinning for different clubs and events helped me understand my style better and helped me improve on my mixing skills. REG: I started DJ-ing two years ago, under Mark Nicosia of LBA as well. Midway, I did a short stint as the lead vocalist of the DJ Group Those Damn Nerds (Mark Nicosia and Mia Ayesa), performing for festivals around the Philippines. I S S U U. C O M / S A U C E I N K

Steph: Hi I’m Stephanie Moreno, one half of the Everyday People with Regina Reinoso. Music is my obsession and seeing happy people dance to my mixes is my fuel to dive further into my career as a DJ. Reg: Hello! I’m Regina Reinoso, the other half of Everyday People. I’ve been in a loyal, passionate relationship with music since I was in the first grade.

How do you balance your career (in the nightlife) and personal life? Do you have a day life/job? Steph: By keeping myself happy and healthy. I take as much rest as I can so I would be able to be on my A-game all the time. During the day, I run an events company and currently a marketing consultant of a music and lifestyle entertaiment retail store. With my passion for the things that I do, it’s not difficult to keep them altogether. Reg: I take multivitamins. Joking aside, the lessons I learn from my daily experiences motivates me to balance both my DJ life and my day job well. I work in a bank from 8-7, then go straight to a gig that sometimes ends at 3am. When I’m tired, I think about how much I’ve grown as a person by being exposed to such different environments 24/7, and that motivates me to pull through every time.

M AY 2 0 1 5

Who inspires you the most and why? Steph & Reg: Our families. Seeing how hard they work in order to give us a good life is what inspires us to become the best in everything that we do, and knowing that we can give the same comfortable life that they gave us and to our future families motivates us to do well.

What do you think is your greatest asset? Steph & Reg: The support we get from our family and friends. They teach us how to be strong and how to be patient when it comes to career, business, and life in general.

What is your guilty pleasure? Steph: FOOD! I love eating. I eat to celebrate and I also eat to relieve stress. Reg: Candy (specifically sour candy like gummy worms or Warheads), and shopping. I love collecting jackets and sneakers.
