When she musters up the courage to voice it, trembling as she puts words to this precious inner stirring, someone in the group cuts her off when she pauses in the middle, her thought still building steam. This person quickly tells her she shouldn’t feel the way she does or else counters with a story of her own, which only tangentially relates to what the introvert was saying. From Model to Vanessaism Inc What do you get when you mix social media, social causes and a beauty pageant? In August, Singapore will experience the inaugural Miss Singapore Global 2013, the first ever beauty pageant where a girl wins, not just based on her looks, but also her outreach on social networks and her social cause.

“As this pageant is an inspiration from my book, I am looking for a winner who is an empowered woman, a future woman leader and a beauty queen who walks the talk by using her title and influence to champion for the cause that is close to her heart,” said Ms Tan. In true fashion, Ms Tan empowered herself by turning her passion into a business, Vanessaism Inc.

Miss Singapore Global 2013 is the brainchild of a former Miss Universe Singapore contestant, Ms Vanessa Tan. “Miss Singapore Global 2013 is born from the inspiration of my book, Be the Right You ™: 15 foundational truths of an Empowered Woman,” shared Ms Tan.

“I am very much into personal development and that’s when I discovered, or rather, rediscovered my calling to discover the potential in women, especially women from disadvantaged backgrounds, polish them up and showcase them on local and international platforms,” explained Ms Tan.

“The pageant is created to meet the gaps in the beauty pageant industry where the public yearns for a beauty queen with the beauty, brains and most importantly, the heart to serve. Therefore, the mission is to transform an ordinary girl with big dreams to a beauty queen whose main responsibility is to give back to society.”

“Hence, I started my own training and speaking business in 2010 that marries business and my calling. My business partner and I started off during purely corporate training to pageant training and now to producing empowered women and future women leaders through the pageant platform.” To the ladies looking to start their own business today, Ms Tan has the following advice.

One of the criteria in the election of contestants for Miss Singapore Global 2013 was based on their existing or past involvement in volunteering, charity work or the desire to use this pageant as a platform to launch her cause. The winner of the pageant will also lead the rest of the finalist to execute an actual charity event. The grand final of the pageant itself will be a charity gala where proceeds will go to the Mother & Child project. Miss Vanessa Tan also added the contestants will be judge on the transformation process from the beginning to the end of the event.

“Be The Right You. Stay true to your mission and never stop learning,” said Ms Tan. “Upgrade yourself not only in the professional development field but also in the personal development area. Because your business is a reflection of who you are as a person.”

“The transformation process prepares each finalist to be an empowered woman and a future leader. The skills learnt in this pageant can also be applied to the finalists’ professional and personal lives,” explained Ms Tan. “They include personal branding via social media channels, media management and the skills to run a charity event.” Finally, the winner will be predominantly selected by the public as 60% of the scores will come from the contestants’ social media popularity and voting via the iPhone app. As such, the winner will officially be the people’s choice. Ms Tan hopes the winner will embody the values of an empowered woman.

Miss Singapore Global 2013 Charity Gala was held on 31 August 2013 at Grand Copthorne Hotel. www.SAUCEink.com

What impact do you think social media will have on your votes? Social media has helped boost my publicity, created a greater awareness of my cause, and allowed people to judge my authenticity. The public has 60% say in who is to win Miss Singapore Global. For them to decide who is to win they first have to know more about what I am all about and what cause am I passionate for. So, social media enables people to interact with me on a personal level. I have had people asking me more about composting, following my progress in the pageant, and spreading my page around to their friends to like my Facebook page.

Which form of social cause would you not choose to be in and why? I have participated in a range of social causes involving elderly, disadvantaged children, financially disadvantaged families, and environmental issues. Honestly, I have yet to find a social cause that ever made me feel like I will never want to be part of... maybe when I do, I will update you on it? Which parts of a day do you like and why? Twilight! It’s the part of the day when it gets cooler, people are getting off from a long day at work, and a time to relax and chill with friends or family for dinner. Plus, the sky looks really lovely during this period.

How powerful do you think social media is in today’s society? In my opinion, in current contacts, social media penetrates through the World Wide Web, which is being spread all over the world. I feel that it is very powerful as it forms a impression of people that are featured.

Which form of social cause would you choose to be involved in and why? I would like to help people living extreme poverty. I believe that everyone should be given a choice in life. If they are not even given a chance to live, how could they be able to get a chance to choose what they want to do in life.

If you were an animal, which animal would you be? I would want to be dolphin because they always bring a smile around. Even when they are sad, they would always bring a smile around because it doesn’t matter how much misery you have, but how much happiness you can give. It is a symbol of selflessness and it is one of the values that i wish to be able to learn & impart.

Cheryl teo 1.67m ,23 years old Fresh Graduate https://twitter.com/cheryltrx https://www.facebook.com/Cheryltrx

How do you plan to use social media to help you achieve more votes? Being a technoob, I don’t even have a smartphone (yet!). But I’m highly dependent on Facebook as my main source of social media! (Instagram would just be a Latergram for me...). I will just keep it real, post things that would reveal more about my own personality, and hopefully engage more people! I’m banking on my uniqueness. Who says this crazy, unconventionally non-girly girl can succeed in a pageant? If you look at me 5 years ago, you would think I’m the last person that would ever participate in such an event. I guess if people can see something different, something unusual in me that they actually like, they will take bit more effort to click the button on the top right hand corner. After all, what else did they have to lose, except say, scrolling bit more on the newsfeed page? And of course my friends and family has been very supportive and sometimes I feel they’re more excited than me about this experience!! :)

Could you share more with our readers on the social causes you are currently involved in? I would like to raise awareness on something which is prevalent, but often goes unnoticed, emotional bullying, which can leave deep seated impacts on affected children and youth, leading right into their adulthood, and in some cases, the rest of their lives. The emotional trauma and scars can have severe repercussions such as low self-esteem, inferiority complex, which would be detrimental in allowing the individual to live life to their fullest potential. Hence I hope to raise awareness on some of the combat techniques against emotional bullying and turn this potentially traumatic experience into “character building”! Like for me, I wasn’t really born into this world with a tomboy label stamped on my head, rather the experiences I had made me this way. And I acknowledge it as part of my personal identity, and embrace it - “I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it.” ― Maya Angelou

Which colour best describes your personality? Black and gold, because it never gets old! :P www.SAUCEink.com

Jennifer Huang 1.68m , 25 years old Recruitment Associate https://www.facebook.com/JenniferRuthHuang

What impact do you think social media will have on your votes? Social media has a very huge impact on my votes due to the interconnected nature of social media networks. Anyone with the access to social media has a say to decide if I could earn their votes through the contents and authenticity of my purpose in this contest.

Which form of social cause would you not choose to be in and why? I will avoid religious-related causes because it encompasses one’s beliefs and values. Especially in some countries, religion is closely related to power. Discussion on such issues can be sensitive which will lead to controversy.

If you could be a man for a day, what would you do? If I could be a man for a day, I would date a girl like myself for fun just to see and understand the flaws and strengths that I will never be able to see from a man’s point of view.

23

Angie Chua 1.65m , 24years old parade performer https://twitter.com/dancingconfetti https://www.facebook.com/angiechuaenqi http://instagram.com/dancingconfetti

How do you plan to use social media to help you achieve more votes? Besides sharing photos through Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, I am looking at Youtube to share video. With videos, people can see the real me with my dance steps. Videos will also engage the audience visually and through the interactive buttons on the channel.

Could you share with our readers on your social cause? I want to help and inspire children with mild intellectual disabilities. They are often neglected by the public as they do not behave normally. I hope to provide them with an avenue for selfexpression, not just through their studies, but in terms of performing arts. I have been teaching for several years and I really enjoy teaching young children. Not just because I see the joy and love with them but it also gives me a strong sense of satisfaction upon completing a bigger challenge.

If you were a fairy tale what princess would you be? Princess Ariel! Firstly, I like her name and her big red hair! Since young, I love to swim and simply just being in the water. Princess Ariel is also known to be energetic and fun-loving, always on the lookout for an adventure, just like myself! The fact that she’s half human half fish makes her more unique compared to the rest of the Disney princesses.

Michelle Qiu 1.65m , 20 years old Oil Trader https://www.facebook.com/Michelle.Qiu.KY http://prettygeek-y.tumblr.com/

Which form of social media do you think is the most powerful in today’s society? It is undoubtedly Facebook. With an unbeatable network and the ability to share any form of media, be it audio, video, pictures, links or text, Facebook surpasses it all. Facebook definitely is still the go-to platform when we want to promote something or make a voice heard. Somewhere out there, someone definitely shares your interest and passion. Different social issues have become viral in different forms, such as links, or even status updates and notes. Facebook’s wide outreach and network ensures that your message is heard.

Which form of social cause would you not choose to be in and why? I would not choose to be in any social cause that is too extremist in nature and may cause harm to society, intentionally or otherwise. I believe that some parts of society should and can be changed, but if it is executed in too extremist a manner it can only tear the fabric of society and create hate. For example, in relation to my own cause of animal welfare, although some scientists have definitely caused unnecessary cruelty and hurt to animals that they are testing on, the extremist groups who respond by bombing their homes do not make it any better but are promoting fear and violence. This is definitely not an action that I can support.

Which Marvel superhero would you choose to date and why? I would choose Nightcrawler. There is always something attractive about a mysterious man who can disappear and teleport. And although he looks demonic, he has a gentle and kind heart. I also love his childish side, especially when he plays practical jokes. I think that our senses of humour are very similar and we would definitely get along well together. Even with the blue skin, I definitely think he’s hot!

Jolyn Wong 1.65m , 22 years old Administrative Executive https://www.facebook.com/jolynwzn http://twitter.com/90DoubleU http://instagram.com/theonewhodreamodd

Which form of social media would you use to help you achieve more votes? Though there are tons of social media platforms out there, I will focus on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Could you share more with our readers on the social causes you are currently involved in? Prior to joining this pageant, I wasn’t involved in any social causes. Growing up in a household where society deems it as dysfunctional, I found it difficult expressing myself, much less trying to reach out and help the less fortunate. I’ve started being more outgoing and optimistic over the years and I realized that there’s so much more that I could do and to reach out to the children who went through the similar dysfunctionality. When my friends introduced this pageant to me, I thought “Let’s use this opportunity to reach out to the kids who are going through what I’ve been through and help them live a happy childhood”

If you had a chance to get three wishes from a genie, what would they be? Health is wealth so I believe that all the aliments and diseases in the world did not exist. Without a healthy body you won’t be able to do the this you love and be with the people you love. Second, I wished that everyone to have a chance to get to do the things they are passionate and love. It might or might not be a life time sort of thing, but it’s a matter of self-fulfillment, by being able to accomplish and do the things you’ve always dreamed of. Lastly, I wish for my grandma to be in the pink of health and happiness everyday till the end of her time. Being the pillar of support for all my life, I just hope that she’d be able to at least live happily and carefree for the rest of her life.

The Interview Q: Of all the pageants you’ve participated (so far), which is the most memorable and why?

Q: Any particular charity drive (or such) that left an impressionable impact (can be good or bad)?

A: The most memorable is my very first pageant – Miss Singapore Chinatown. I won the title in 2008 and went on to represent Singapore at Miss Chinese International 2009 in Hong Kong TVB. It was a psychedelic, unprecedented experience.

A: The most impressionable charity drive was the recent car wash fundraising for S.A.Deaf. It was a meaningful, congenial collaboration between Miss Singapore Beauty Pageant and S.A.Deaf. The charity drive was a great way to create awareness for deafness and to get the contestants involved in community service.

Q: As a prominent beauty queen, I’m sure you’ve endorsed numerous brands, could you name a few? A: I was brand ambassador for an aesthetic clinic, hair salon, makeover studio, and bridal boutique. The preeminent ambassadorship is for The Singapore Association for the Deaf (S.A.Deaf) and appointed spokesperson for the silent community. Q: Understand that you’ve been doing pageantry not just locally but internationally, in your opinion, are there a different between the two? How do you think our local pageantry could improve itself? A: Yes, there are differences. International pageant is a competition for contestants around the world. Most of them are winners of their respective pageants in their countries and official delegates. During the weeks leading to the finals, we acquired understanding for the cultural diversity and appreciation for linguistic variation. Local pageant is a nationwide competition open to all Female Singaporeans or Permanent Residents who are qualified. I think generous sponsorships and stupendous media coverage are the fundamental factors to improve local pageants. Q: During “off-work” days, who is Valentane Huang? A: I’m an expressive, fun loving person who doesn’t take me too seriously. I never think too highly of myself or weaken by malicious criticism. We would care a lot less about what people think about us if we realized how seldom they think of us (Lol). My style is casual chic. When I’m off duty, I like to dress down in casual wear with a touch of fashion element. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Q: You’ve worked with many make-up professionals, any preference among the many and why? Would be great if you have a photo (high-res) to share with us. A: The Makeover Inc. is my number one choice for makeup and hair styling services. Their dedicated team of professionals will bring out the best in you. Q: On a regular day, do you put on make-up? If so, what kind of look do you go for and how long does it take to put the look together? A: Yes, I put on light makeup on a regular day. I go for the natural look and it takes me about 30mins. Q: Any beauty regime to share with us? A: My beauty regime is simple. Exfoliate, Moisturize and protect your skin with SPF30 sunscreen. Drink at least 2 litres of water per day and enrich your diet with fruits and vegetables. Get at least 6-8hrs of night time sleep, and exercise regularly. If you are too tired for work out after a long day of work, try brisk walking for 30-60mins. Q: Last but not least, anything you’d like to share/advice/tips future pageantry contestants? A: You are only young once. Be adventurous and enjoy the experience of becoming a beauty queen. If you didn’t succeed at first, try again. Never allow the decisions of a few judges bring you down. After all, there can only be one winner. Have faith in yourself.

Q: I see that you partake in a lot of charity-oriented activities. Could you name some and why you took part in it? A: Why not? It is a blessing to give than to receive. I practice the law of tithing. The more we give, the more we have. Besides monthly donation to my choice of charity, I’m also involved at S.A.Deaf, Down Syndrome Association and ERM supported charity.

33 A vibrant and dynamic personality, Maria Mak manages to create fresh designs and use zesty colours that pop in her clothes which reflect who she is aptly. Her designs are personal, simple yet electric with bold, striking colours like acid yellow, bright orange and turqouise which dominates her latest collection. Twisted Sisters was born out of Maria’s love for fashion. One of the top ten finalists for Young International Fashion Designer in her university days in Canada, it was an important stepping stone in Maria’s dream to create her own designs to cater for comfort yet versatile clothing for every type of women. Currently, Twisted Sisters carries both ready to wear ladies fashion and lingerie. Maria’s dream is to expand the collection to include Menswear, Baby’s clothes and even Maternity wear, further turning Twisted Sisters into a lifestyle brand worldwide. Her engagement with Inverted Edge was a necessary move to break into not only the Singapore market but also the entire Asian market. Maria feels that Inverted Edge is the right online fashion retailer to help her in her quest of expanding brand awareness in Asia because of the similar style and philosophy to Twisted Sisters. She saw a positive surge in the number of Singapore and Malaysian press and bloggers contacting her, thus multiplying their network and paving the way to create more awareness for Twisted Sisters. The name Twisted Sisters has a most interesting twist to it like all of Maria’s designs! She believes that there is a twist to everything in life and two sides to a human being.

Q1: Where do you draw inspiration from?

I travel a lot and I’m always inspired by everything. I like to learn new stuff as well and actually, my dog! Through animals, you see their innocence and it brings you back to your childhood. You need to be reminded sometimes that you have to enjoy life.

Q2: How did you come up with such a unique name Twisted Sisters? Every piece of clothing has a twist to it and an unexpected detail. And also, I think, even for myself, there is a twist. Like an evil side. I can be very elegant one day and grouchy the next. Since the collection reflects me so I have to create something that I like.

Q3: Where did you draw inspiration for the yellow ribbed top and pencil skirt?

I’m a fan of cotton ribbed material and I have a lot of these guys! The collection represents me so most of the stuff is what I like so when I pick the material I go, “Oooh I like that and this!” Haha… Neon and slinky ribbed is my thing. The good thing is it’s form fitting. That’s what I want, I want my customers to wear something for the morning and maybe they accessorize it a bit and go out for drinks later in the night.

Q4: Where did you draw inspiration for the Britney dress?

It has a wide back which I often wear myself. The material of silk cotton is very light weight and one of the reasons I made this piece, is when I’m travelling to hot climates, I usually bring cotton clothes. Nowadays, when I travel, I usually bring this along with me and it’s so light weight! It is also A-lined so if you eat a lot, this dress will cover that up! www.SAUCEink.com

FASHION SNIPPETS

Fashion for the little people Rich Flanagan is the manager of www.8ball.co.uk, where visitors can purchase not only baby t-shirts, but also a large variety of kids t-shirts. If grownups can wear the most outrageous, funny and unique t-shirts shouldn’t kids have the same rights as their parents? The answer is yes and there are plenty of websites on the Internet that offer dozens of t-shirts for kids. Ranging from AC/DC, The Simpsons to the famous The Rolling Stones, the offer is rich and we can all agree that there is a t-shirt for every child out there. The question is which websites are the best? If indeed you are interested in this subject you should start by looking at those websites that have their t-shirts divided into intuitive categories so that the visitors can find what they are looking for fast and easy. Another important aspect that should be taken into consideration by potential t-shirt buyers is that high quality websites offer plenty of images of their products so that the visitors can figure out which t-shirts are the best for their kids. A catalogue with the latest models should be available for users in order to make a better picture about the baby t-shirts that are for sale. Unfortunately, babies can’t tell their parents which t-shirts they prefer so parents have to figure out on their own. But luckily

there are hundreds of models from which parents can take their pick. Of course, such websites should offer t-shirts not only for babies, but also for kids and with a little bit of patience, every kid wills the ideal t-shirt for him. Funny slogan t-shirts are a boom these days in terms of sales and more models are available each day along with other models like music-based, cartoon-based and the list could go on. Other popular categories are: slogan & funny, TV & film, 80s fashion and others. In most cases, the availability of these t-shirts is for babies and kids ranging from 6 months to 12 years. A well-thought website should have a ?New ?section in which there should be listed the latest baby clothing products along with information regarding sizing, prices and availability. Another interesting issue regarding these websites is the rating option. If you are wondering how this works it is quite simple, users of the website will rate a certain baby t-shirt and future users will find the most popular t-shirts in terms of rating. Of course it is a personal rating that most likely won’t be appreciated by all the future users but it can be a great tool to find the most popular t-shirts on the website. Kids these days want to stand out and what better way to do so if not with a

funny kid t-shirt? There are dozens of models for kids and babies out there; you just have to pick one. Kids can pick up their own t-shirts and for babies, parents take their pick and luckily, the babies will enjoy their brand new, let’s say funny slogan t-shirt. All things considered, if you can’t find the perfect t-shirts for your kid on the local shop, the best way to search for one is on the Internet as there are plenty of websites that can offer exactly what you are looking for, a unique and funny baby/kid t-shirt.

Fashion tips for women Are women fashion style statement just about wearing women fashion clothing? Every one of us is different and so it’s important that we have a fashion statement that best suits our personality. Fashion is nothing but highlighting the best and hiding all the flaws. Points all you women wanted to know about clothing • Always wear a free flowing fabric in one tone to achieve a long and slim look. • Wear clothes on the basis of your body structure. • Velvet and leather is apt for winters and silk, organza and cotton for summers. • For a morning party opt for lighter shades like emerald green, ocean blue, pink or you could also try out for some trendy pastel colours. • For late evening occasions opt for vibrant colours that can add sparkling effect to your dressing sense.

• If you are short it would be advisable you avoid wearing short dresses. Rather go for long skirts with a nice fish cut. • If you are thin avoid wearing sleeveless clothes. It would be advisable to wear dark colour clothes as they hide your pale body structure. • If you have a medium structure you need to wear beige and fawn colour clothes.

Skin tone • If you have a fair complexion, then gold with a blend of copper would just look beautiful.

• If you are medium wheatish colored, then mixed shades of white, beige and bronzy golden would suit your style. • Dark skin women should wrap themselves with golden copper shades.

Helpful tips • Wear clothes of your own size. Never opt for oversized clothes. • Be careful while selecting accessories for a wear. Just don’t pick up something for the heck of it. Remember your accessories speak more about you than your clothes. • Make sure whatever jeweler you wear blends well with your style.

43

The designers also offer these five slimming style tips: 1. Higher necklines support and minimize a full bust. 2. Vertical stripes, princess seams and single-breasted jackets provide a slimming illusion. 3. Bootcut pants and flared skirts minimize heavy hips, thighs and rear. 4. Tunic tops stylishly conceal hips and rear. 5. Clothes containing super control fabrics with Lycra and power-mesh panels can smooth away imperfections.

Fashions that flatter Good news for many women is word that looking both stylish and more slim can be easier than you think. That's important, as one recent study discovered. In fact, the survey by a major apparel company found, almost 90 percent of American women reported their looks determine how they feel about themselves.

Sixty-three percent cited their stomachs as their major problem area, followed by thighs (45 percent), hips (34 percent) and rear ends (33 percent).

OTHER FINDINGS:

Diet and exercise are the best solutions for looking and feeling better but women have also turned to shape wear, such as old-fashioned girdles and other undergarments for instant effect.

Most women, regardless of age, shape or size, perceive that they have body flaws.

These "problems" significantly increase for women who wear larger than a size 10. Sixty-five percent described their attempts to control their weight as unsuccessful.

One of the most effective yet least expensive is called shape fx? Unlike other shape wear brands, it features a unique collection of ready-towear apparel with built-in shape wear panels that trim the waist, slim the hips and shape the rear. These unexpected bonuses come in great-fitting pants, skirts and dresses, and are invaluable assets in an extensive swimwear collection. The collection does include conventional shape wear intimate pieces as well.

A Season Of Classic Looks And Delicate Details What will women be wearing this fall? The style-savvy experts at Chadwick’s, the nation’s first and largest value fashion catalog, say that clean and conservative looks are back in vogue. Skin-baring outfits are out and layering is in. Volume and textured fabric are fashion’s buzzwords, and rich colors like black, red, purple and gray ruled the runways. Chadwick’s offers the following tips on how to be fashionable this fall:

Sleek Silhouettes

Touchable Textures

Au Courant Accents

The “new suit” features fitted jackets paired with slim pants and skirts, for a polished, tailored look. Consider a mandarin collar or washed wool plaid blazer with a favorite pair of pants for sophisticated style. Or menswear-styled suit jackets, softened with feminine details and gentle draping, create a look that works in a boardroom or a bistro.

Luxurious velvet made a comeback this season. Chadwick’s designs feature crushed and jewelry-close velvet blazers that create a modern look.

For tasteful fall layering, it’s all in the details. Pieces trimmed in lace or ruffles create a romantic touch under shirts and jackets.

Give your pants some pizzazz by wearing cropped or wide-legged styles. Several top designers explored this trend with contrasting looks-pairing loose with tight and long with short. Anyone can wear this look by balancing the silhouette with heels or an appropriate top.

From chunky cable to fine gauge, there’s a knit for all occasions. For a cozy option on chilly fall nights, choose a sweater-knit. For a feminine spin, try a twin set lined with ruffles or a beaded cardigan.

Wound along the hem of a skirt or down a pant leg, embroidery adds a splash of style. Paisley and floral designs are classic twists on this modern trend. One signature snapshot is a jacket cinched at the waist with a belt. Pair it with a boot of any height for an up-to-the-minute look.

A clothes encounter in the business world Do you ever wonder where all the dress rules have gone? Depending on when and where you are on any given business day, the words “distant past” might come to mind. It’s difficult to decide if people don’t know what to wear to work or if they have lost sight of the relevance of appearance to professional success. The Queen of England is reported to have told Prince Charles, “Dress gives one the outward sign from which people can judge the inward state of mind. One they can see, the other they cannot.” Clearly, she was saying what many people are reluctant to accept; that people judge us by the way we dress. In all situations, business and social, our outward appearance sends a message. Try going to a busy restaurant at lunchtime. Look around you at what people are wearing and see if you don’t make judgments about who they are, their line of business, their

46www.magazineonline.com

personalities and their competencies. Think about how you feel when you are dressed in your usual business attire as opposed to casual dress. Your choice of business apparel speaks to your professional behavior and credibility. It is important to understand how to dress for business if you wish to promote yourself and your organization in a positive manner, How you dress depends on four factors: the industry in which you work, the job you have within that industry, the geographic area in which you live; and most importantly, what your client expects to see.

Your choice of business apparel speaks to your professional behavior and credibility

47 Professional Dress for Men In men’s clothing, fashion does not change significantly from season to season but business attire is about being professional and not about being fashionable. It’s about presenting yourself in a way that makes your clients feel comfortable and confident with you. Dressing for success is still the rule. The professional businessman should keep in mind these few points when deciding what to wear to work. Choose a conservative suit in navy, black or gray either pinstripe or solid. The quality of the material speaks as loudly as the color and can make the difference between sleaze and suave. A solid white or blue dress shirt with long sleeves offers the most polished look. The more pattern and color you add, the more the focus is on your clothing, rather than your professionalism. Ties should be made of silk or a silk-like fabric. Avoid the cartoon characters and go for simple and subtle if you want to enhance your credibility. Socks should be calf-length or above. Make sure they match not only what you are wearing, but also each other. A quick glance in good light before heading out the door can save embarrassment later in the day. Check for holes as well if you’ll be going through airport security and removing your shoes. Shoes should without question be conservative, clean and well polished. Lace-up shoes are the choice over slip-ons or flip flops. Don’t think for a minute that people don’t notice shoes. Many people will look at your feet before your face. Belts need to match or closely coordinate with your shoes. Once again, quality counts. Keep jewelry to a minimum. In a time when men sport gold necklaces, bracelets and earrings, the business professional should limit himself to a conservative watch, a wedding band and maybe his college ring. Personal hygiene is part of the success equation. Freshly scrubbed wins out over heavily fragranced any day of the week. Save the after-shave for after hours, but never the shave itself. The finishing touch for the business man is his choice of accessories: briefcase, portfolio and pen. When it comes to sealing the deal, a top of the line suit, a silk tie and a good pair of leather shoes can lose their affect when you pull out the ball point pen you picked up in the hotel meeting room the day before.

Professional Dress for Women When women entered the workplace in the 1970’s and 1980’s in greater numbers than ever before and began to move into positions which had traditionally been held by men, many of them believed that they needed to imitate male business attire.

The result was women showing up at the office in skirted suits or coordinated skirts and jackets with tailored blouses finished off with an accessory item that looked very much like a man’s tie. Happily those days are gone. While the business woman may now wear trousers to work, she does it out of a desire to appear professional and at the same time enjoy the flexibility and comfort that pants offer over skirts. Her goal is no longer to mirror her male colleagues. The same overall rules apply to women’s work attire as apply to men’s. Business clothing is not a reflection of the latest fashion trend. A woman should be noticed for who she is and her professional skills rather than for what she wears. Her business wear should be appropriate for her industry and her position or title within the industry. Start with a skirted suit or pants suit for the most conservative look. A skirted suit is the most professional. With a few exceptions, dresses do not offer the same credibility unless they are accompanied by matching jackets. Skirts should be knee-length or slightly above or below. Avoid extremes. A skirt more than two inches above the knee raises eyebrows and questions. Pants should break at the top of the foot or shoe. While Capri pants and their fashion cousins that come in assorted lengths from mid-calf to ankle are the latest trend, they are out of place in the conservative business environment. Blouses and sweaters provide color and variety to woman’s clothing, but they should be appealing rather than revealing. Inappropriate necklines and waistlines can give the wrong impression. Women need to wear hose in the business world. Neutral or flesh-tone stockings are the best choices. Never wear dark hose with light-colored clothing or shoes. Keep an extra pair of stockings in your desk drawer unless the hosiery store is next door or just down the street from the office. Faces, not feet, should be the focal point in business so chose conservative shoes. A low heel is more professional than flats or high heels. In spite of current fashion and the sandal rage, open-toed or backless shoes are not office attire. Not only are sandals a safety hazard, they suggest a certain official agenda. When it comes to accessories and jewelry, less is once again more. Keep it simple: one ring per hand, one earring per ear. Accessories should reflect your personality, not diminish your credibility. Business attire is different from weekend and evening wear. Investing in a good business wardrobe is an investment in your professional future. For those who think it’s not what you wear but who you are that creates success, give that some more thought. Business skills and experience count, but so does personal appearance and that all-important first impression.

tips on how to find the best wholesale jewellery

Whether you’re a fashion retailer, an e-tailer, an eBay seller, or you simply want to earn some extra income selling costume jewelry, the key to success is finding great wholesale jewelry from a costume jewelry supplier. Finding high quality wholesale fashion jewelry can be an elusive quest, though, so here are five tips to get you started.

1 When it comes to wholesale jewelry, import is king. Almost all fashion jewelry is imported, so you need to find a costume jewelry supplier that obtains jewelry from around the globe. The more sources of jewelry the supplier has, the more likely it is that you’ll be able to find the variety of pieces you need at bargain prices. In addition, you’ll be assured of a steady stream of new pieces and your ability to obtain the wholesale jewelry you need won’t be hampered by world events that negatively impact those wholesalers with only one supply chain.

2 Look for breadth and depth. Accessories consist of more than earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, so your wholesale jewelry supplier should carry a wide variety of pieces. Anklets and toe rings are must-haves, but so are body jewelry, cell phone jewelry, hair accessories, key chain charms, and bejeweled belts.

3 5 Look for minimums, shipping, and customer satisfaction. When you’re shopping for wholesale jewelry, find a costume jewelry supplier that has a reasonable minimum purchase. You may not be able to or want to - commit to investing a significant sum of money in fashion jewelry. An online wholesale jewelry store, for example, may only have a fifty-dollar minimum order, which is a perfect place to start. In addition, it’s important that the supplier you select has the merchandise in stock, rather than forcing you to wait until they receive their jewelry import. Look for a company that ships on the same business day or by the next business day at the latest. Finally, one of the best ways to judge a wholesale jewelry supplier is by their commitment to customer satisfaction. The supplier should be able to provide you with testimonials, and attest to the importance of customer satisfaction to their business.

Don’t forget the classics. Although it’s important to have a variety of trendy pieces, a good wholesale costume jewelry supplier will also carry the classics, like sterling silver, cubic zirconia, Swarovski crystal, and semi-precious stone jewelry. Unless you specialize in being fashion forward, more traditional pieces are staples that will sell year-round.

4 Find a jewelry trend spotter. Unless you’re steeped in the world of fashion, you won’t be exposed to the nuances of seasonal jewelry trends. A good wholesale jewelry store will do your homework for you, and offer pieces that reflect the latest trends in jewelry design. You don’t want to be stuck with chunky necklaces when fine filigree is in fashion, but you want to make sure you have enough hoop earrings when they hit the fashion runways.

Finding the Right Prom dress No doubt Prom is the highlight of any senior’s year. Prom marks the end of a long journey. It’s a time to reflect on the past, and move on towards the future. With how important Prom is you want to make sure that you have the right Prom Dress! Below are some tips that will ensure that your Prom dress is a hit.

Colour

Prom dresses all by themselves can be quite boring at times. It’s amazing though how a simple dress can look with something as simple as a flower or a wrap. Keep finding a dress as first priority and accessories second. You will run into a nightmare if you try to find a dress to match accessories.

Size

Buy a dress that fits! Prom is not a time to be cheap and save a little money by purchasing a dress that is a size too big or small. Find a dress that fits your body shape, and that will bring out the best in you.

Accessorize Everyone has a different complexion. Some Complexions work well with some colors and some don’t. Things like tanning or dying your hair can help change this but it’s still you. Find a color that works with your complexion not against it.

Coordinate

Chances are you have a date that will be taking you to Prom. Communicate with him to figure out what he is going to be wearing as far as style and color to make sure that you will coordinate with him. This is often overlooked but can you see the importance for example if: You buy a light colored dress that has a retro feel to it, and your date is going for a flash look with shiny suit and tie. The two just won’t match and you will end up looking like an odd pair.

Take your time when looking for a dress. Prom is important! I would recommend taking the above into consideration; remember though that confidence can make any dress look good, so if the dress you really want doesn’t really work for you, Get it! Feel good about yourself and have a safe prom.

BEAUTY SNIPPETS

Today’s woman is the benefactor of all these years of trial and error with a virtually unlimited choice of products for any look they want to achieve.

W

ith all the billions of dollars spent every year worldwide on cosmetics, sometimes we may find ourselves asking, how did it get to this point? When did it become the norm for me to have to wake up every morning and before I even go out the door I get to paint my face from top to bottom? Surely a woman way back in history didn’t just wake up one day and apply eyelashes, lipstick, eyeliner, foundation, and rouge all at the same time. No, it was, like many things, a culmination of things from the past. Remember the Egyptians? That was over four thousand years ago. Cleanliness and appearance were terribly important to the Egyptians. They believed the appearance was in direct link with the health of the soul.

A History of C

They strived to always look and smell good. And with a society who values their appearance, you’ve inevitably going to have people who are going to make themselves stand out. But the Egyptians, being the innovative people they were, used cosmetics for reasons that were even smarter than just trying to look good. Mesdemet was the earliest kind of eye shadow- a substance made of copper and lead ore. The dark shades they believed would ward off evil eyes to their own. It was also a great disinfectant and insect repellent. Kohl was a dark powder that was also applied around the eyes in an oval shape. It was a combination of lead, ash, ochre, copper, and burnt almonds. To further enhance their appearance, they would apply a mixture of water and red clay

to the cheekbone area. They would also paint their nails colours of orange and yellow with a substance called henna. As time moved on and cultures were exposed to each other more and more, the Greeks began to pick up on the many practices of the Egyptian’s use of cosmetics. They would give themselves a pale colour with a foundation that contained lead in it. This proved fatal on more than one occasion. As the Romans began to pick up the cosmetics practice, the pursuit of beauty became much less about functionability and took a turn into much more exotic routes. The Romans would paint their nails with a combination of sheep’s blood and cooked body fat. An ancient Roman man once said, a woman without paint is like food without salt.

315 show off their wealth. As hostesses of the party, it was important for them to be the best looking woman at the function, so it was extremely important for them to look the youngest they possibly could. Women at that time who lived these extravagant lifestyles did not eat well, would not exercise, and breathed in the heavily polluted air that the cities of the time produced. They would rely on products like anti-aging cream and face cream to help hide their blemishes. They would also go to the beauty salon. It was a little different back then than it is today. Women would sneak into the back of the salons and hide their faces as they entered. One of the most famous of these discreet beauty houses was the House of Cyclax, who would sell creams and rouges to ladies. Mrs. Henning, who was the owner, sold and created many products for her desperate customers who didn’t want anyone to know that they were getting old.

Cosmetics For centuries after the Egyptian empire faded, the fashion norm around the world was a pale complexion. A tanned, sun-dried face was associated with being a commoner who worked out in the field all day alongside her husband. The upper class ladies of course did not participate in physical labour like that so they stayed inside and had white faces. A white, pale complexion was also a symbol of wealth. If you had enough money, then you didn’t have to work. So a pale complexion was extremely important to some people. To get this look, women (and men too) would use a combination of hydroxide, lead oxide, and carbonate in a powder form to paint their faces and bodies. Unfortunately, this lead to a sometimes fatal side effect, lead poisoning. To remedy this, chemists in the nineteenth century finally discovered a mixture of zinc oxide that didn’t block the skin from being able to breathe and kept people out of that irritating lead poisoning sickness. It worked so well that it is still used today by cosmetics manufacturers. In the Edwardian era of London, around the turn of the century of 1900, society women with a disposable income would throw lavish parties and do a lot of entertaining to

The cosmetics craze continued throughout the centuries into the 1900’s and began to see the earliest of the cosmetics industry being formed. Mrs. Henning House of Cyclax in London sold many products that you can still buy today from world famous companies like Avon. Another beauty salon owner found herself expanding her products to meet the demands of her upper class clientele from a facial cream that protects women’s skin from the sun to lipstick and face powder. Today, you can find a whole line of cosmetics from Helena Rubenstein. As the years went on, the popularity of beauty salons continued to increase. In 1909, a salon called Selfridges began to sell cosmetics out in the open ver the counter. Women’s attitudes began to change and confidence grew. When the Russian ballet came to London, the influence of high art was apparent on many designers. A man named Paul Poiret was one of the first to come out with a much more vibrant and colourful look. It was also the first time that permanent cosmetics were seen. Women could tattoo their lipstick and eye shadow permanently on their faces. During the 1930’s the fashion of lipstick went to a darker shade with a variety of shades. Around the time of WW II, ingredients for cosmetics were at a severe shortage and women underwent a kind of make-down. This ended right when the war did and demand for cosmetics increased more than ever. Competitors began manufacturing a number of products to meet the demands of the female consumer. Today’s woman is the benefactor of all these years of trial and error with a virtually unlimited choice of products for any look they want to achieve. There are literally thousands of companies who have products in this now billion dollar yearly industry. Cosmetic products sell year round and even in times of recession. So ladies, thank your ancestors and their concern for their own appearance for your own that you have today. There were probably days when they woke up and didn’t really feel like going through the hassle of putting on their face either.

HOW TO PIECE

About a decade ago, people knew only one way of getting their teeth whitened- that was through dental in-office whitening. It was a wearisome procedure but slowly when people started showing a compulsive concern of having a whiter set of teeth, the impulsion goaded a number of different bleaching formulas and teeth whitening kits started flooding the everyday market. Nowadays, dental in-office teeth whitening aren’t the only option. Numerous home teeth whitening kits are now dominating the market with unprecedented rate, as they are more beneficial products of teeth whitening treatments. Home teeth whitening system uses different teeth whitening kits like whitening strips, teeth whitening trays with whitening gels, and brushon whitening. Some of the basic home teeth whitening tip or methods of teeth whitening, used by people around the world are as follows: 1

Application of a paste of lemon juice and salt in the yellowish tint of the teeth is a wonderful way of eradicating that dull colour of the teeth.

4

Dried and powdered Bay leaves combined with dried orange peel also acts as an excellent whitener.

5

All these home teeth whitening methods when done regularly can give an excellent result. Nowadays, people lack patience and time and so they frequent the chemist’s shop to purchase teeth whitening kits. These kits include whitening strips, whitening sprays, brush-on gels and whitening toothpastes. But before using such teeth whitening kits, one should follow certain guidelines to get a perfect teeth whitening. He should use oxygenating toothpaste to brush the teeth because it contains substances that strengthen gums and prevent sensitivity from occurring in the teeth. Before purchasing teeth whitening kits containing bleaching gel, one should confirm that the formula has 21 percent concentration and is carbamide peroxide based. After using Home teeth whitening kits, one should rinse their mouth with an oxygenating oral wash to get that perfecta teeth whitening.

2 Rubbing the inner white part of an orange peel in the discoloured teeth gives a lovely white shine. 3

Regular use of paste of bi-carbonate of soda with water removes the surface stain from the teeth.

2. A foundation that makes you glow. Don’t like foundation? It’s probably just because you haven’t found ‘the one’. A good foundation is invisible and weightless and makes every day a good face day. Don’t get discouraged just be- cause the last few formulas you tried weren’t right for you hit up the makeup counter for help finding the right formula and shade, rather than flying solo at the drugstore.

3. A signature scent. It’s fun to have a ‘fragrance wardrobe’, and there’s something to be said for having lots of fragrances to choose from for different seasons, moods, and oc- casions. But you also want one signature scent that you can wear anytime, anywhere, and instantly be recognized

HOW DO YOU DUMP A TOXIC

RELATIONSHIP

We all know that having close friends is good for you, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Your friends motivate you to work out, comfort you when you’re blue, and help you celebrate all the good things in your life. But what about when they don’t? Sometimes, a friend can seem to do more harm than good to your health and hap- piness. Some take it a step farther by pushing you to do things you’re not comfortable with, or even things that are dangerous or illegal. So how do you dump a toxic friend, especially if you’ve shared so many good times together? If your friend is pulling you down with a negative habit, like encouraging you to overeat, speak up! Tell her that while you love hanging out together, you’d rather not meet for dinner at the all-you-can-eat buffet, and suggest a differ- ent venue (preferably unrelated to food). The same holds true if she does something that makes you uncomfortable, like gossiping about a mutual friend; tell her, firmly but kindly, that you’re not cool with her behavior and you won’t participate.

If she gets the hint, great! But if the direct ap- proach doesn’t work, you’ll have to decide how much the friendship is worth to you. A friend who knowingly drags you down might not be worth your while. You’ll have to decide just how much you’re willing to continue to put into the relation- ship. If you otherwise enjoy her company, try limiting your time together. It’s okay to decline invitations to dinner in favor of group outings to the movies. And if she’s calling you for three-hour gossip ses- sions, it’s okay to cut her short by saying sweetly, “I’d love to chat longer, but I’ve got to go; I need to (finish fixing dinner, pick up my dry-cleaning, insert other excuse here).” The exception to the rule is a friend who encour- ages you to do something dangerous or illegal, like drugs and brushes off your concerns. In that case, it’s fine to skip attempts to salvage the relationship, and simply cut off contact. It hurts to lose a friend, but when she’s hurting your health and happiness, sometimes, you just have to say goodbye.

HE SAYS SHE SAYS

Attract Your Right Relationship with Your Natural Attractive Force As long as you resist being your natural, balanced self, you will not attract harmonious, long lasting, or healthy relationships. Once you become true to yourself, you automatically attract the right person to you. You can access and balance own unique vibration of energy to reveal your innate power and beauty within to attract the type of relationships you desire. You Broadcast Who You Are and What You Want What you think about, you attract. When you are cautious and hold back your true self, you attract similar situations to you. If you think you are not sufficient, not wise enough, or not powerful enough to create the reality you truly desire, you will attract a representation of your own doubt in yourself.

Attract Balanced Relationships If you look for someone else to complete you, you attract an incomplete relationship. What you create is a partnership made up of two half people, that will not satisfy either person. When you feel complete and sufficient, you set up a vibration that attracts those with the similar qualities. When you reflect the type of vibrations you choose to attract in someone else, you will be seen and recognized by Mr./Ms. Wonderful. Re-ignite Your Attractive Power

body automatically seeks its original perfect balance. With practice your system will stay in balance effortlessly. This way you can experience your ultimate sexual and creative power.. Become Clear and Certain About What You Want Connecting with your innate power and sexual force spawns a new level of self certainty. Your confidence will soar and you may find yourself achieving goals you long forgot. As you get neutral to foreign energies that compete for space in your body, you become clear, grounded and focused. Follow Your Own Path

Balance your own male or female energy to re-ignite your attractive power. When you flood your body with your own female or male energy, your

Life is a journey, and you have everything you need to create the most desirable, enjoyable and fulfilling

327

journey for yourself. Take steps each day to reach your life goals, and you will not only be amazed at how well you will achieve them, but at how enjoyable and stress-free the journey will be. Increase Your Natural Sex Appeal with Visualization Everyone has both male and female energies. Sometimes someone from your past has turned off your male or female energy. It affects how and what you attract in your life. In the following exercise, you will increase the amount of female or male energy running in your body to increase your sex appeal and attraction.

1 Close your eyes, but stay focused. 2 Visualize yourself sitting in a control

room in the center of your head where you have command of your entire being.

3 In your mindeye, visualize a scale or gauge from 0-100% that represents your current male or female energy running in your body. Notice the

current reading of your meter. Don’t judge it. Just note what you see.

4 Imagine increasing this energy by

slowly raising your gauge to 100%.

5 Simultaneously, allow the energy

from the sexual center, approximately 2 below your navel, begin to move throughout the entire body. Breath in from the navel and imagine the energy flowing upwards through the torso, down the arms, and up into the head. Allow this sexual energy flow out the top of your head like a fountain. Let the energy flow down to your feet and bring the energy up through the bottoms of your feet, into the legs creating a cycle of your own flowing feminine or masculine energy.

8 Allow your system to adjust to a level where you feel most comfortable. Your Attractive Force Within IS Powerful Your renewed personal power will revolutionize your relationships. When you run your own sexual energy you increase self-confidence, boost your attractiveness and create balance. People around you will notice a positive change in you. They may not put their finger on it but you will know why they respond favorably. Practice this energy technique for 20-30 days and the results will astonish you.

6 Choose a color for this energy flowing through the body as you push the needle on the gauge to 100%.

7 Allow yourself to experience your

powerful male or female energy flushing out foreign energies from your body. Let this energy flow for about 5 minutes. Notice how your body feels.

HE SAYS SHE SAYS

H

ave you ever had a secret love and wished that person would notice you and be attracted to you? Have you longed to develop a loving relationship with someone special, but found that your best efforts don’t seem to be good enough? Have you desired a stronger and deeper relationship with your lover or special friend, but come to accept that they just don’t want it as badly as you do. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was something you could do to open your lover’s eyes so they were as eager as you to enter into the deeper love relationship you desire? Many people have found exactly this kind of magic in Wiccan love spells. Love spells are used to enhance and nourish almost any relationship or love need whether you wish to be reunited with your love, encourage your lover to make a deeper commitment, have a more passionate sex life, or even find your true love. What are Wiccan Love Spells? Love spells have become a very popular form of magic (magick). Wiccan white magick spells rely on the positive energy located in all people and all things. Wiccan love spells are effective because they are designed to intensify and amplify the positive energy that is already present in a situation. They do not attempt to manufacture energy that is not already there.

There is a very broad range of love spells, each of which focuses on a slightly different objective. For instance there are love spells for reuniting with a previous love, and others for finding your true love. There are love spells to increase the passion in your love live, and others to encourage your lover to become more committed to your relationship. There are even sex and fertility spells to help in those areas. In other words, different love spells can be used to amplify or positively influence any aspect of your love relationship. Is Casting a Spell an Attempt to Manipulate Others? Love spells, as well as other Wiccan white magick spells, work with the positive energy that is in all things and all people. That means the practice of spell casting respects the free will of the people towards which the spells are directed. While it is true that there are black magick forms of Wicca, white magick Wiccan love spells can be just as effective when cast correctly and in the right spirit. A responsible Wiccan spell caster will use spells that are worded to not be manipulative or violate free will. For example, a reunited lovers?spell can be worded to enhance, and bring to the surface feelings that already exist for you until your lover thinks of you so much

they can’t wait to have you back. In this way the spell is not creating new feelings, nor is it making your lover bind to you outside of his or her free will. This is not only respectful of the free will of your lover, but it is also a fullfilment of your deepest desire. You want your lover to desire you from his or her own free will, not because they have been manipulated to do so, or because they have been put in a kind of trance over which they have no control. Who Can Cast a Wiccan Love Spell? An experienced Wiccan spell caster is the best person to cast a love spell for you. For instance, at http://practikalmagik. com Orion has been casting spells for more than 25 years, and knows all

329

ut

the factors that go into casting an effective spell. The most important of these is the wording of the spell itself, but the date and time of the spell casting is also important. As Orion says, “experience has taught me that casting on the best date in the lunar month yields far greater results than if cast immediately regardless of the lunar cycle.” On the other hand, if you prefer to cast the spell yourself, that is possible too. But obviously if you are inexperienced you will need some guidance. Orion’s “Love Spell Kit” will give you “the finest, most potent and powerful wicca love spell, herbs, crystals and candles. You will receive easy step-by-step instructions and the exact same tools used in our own personal love spell casting.” Love spells can be an effective tool for enriching your love life. 10 tips to have a fresh breath

D

espite public opinion, bad breath rarely comes from the stomach.

Most people can smell other people’s breath, but have trouble smelling their own. So, if you think you have bad breath, you might or you might not. Bad taste is usually not a good indication. The best and simplest way to find out is to ask an adult in your family or a close friend. In the mouth, the most common source of bad breath is the very back of the tongue. Food debris, dead cells and postnasal drip can accumulate there, and the breakdown of the proteins by the resident bacteria causes foul odor. The second most important cause is bacteria breaking down protein between your teeth. By the way, the gases and other molecules that the bacteria produce are toxic and can harm your gums as well. Two good reasons to floss every day (if you don’t believe me, smell the floss)? Bad breath usually increases when the mouth is dry. Chewing sugarless gum for 4-5 minutes at a time can be helpful. The generalization that mouthwashes work for only a few minutes is wrong. Try gargling right before bedtime for best results. Some researchers recommend alcohol-free mouth rinses.

Eating a hearty and healthy breakfast cleans the mouth and back of the tongue, gets the saliva flowing, and is probably good for you. Some people (maybe 5-7% of the population) have experienced small crumbly ‘stones in their mouths that have a foul smell. These are called Tonsilloliths? They are partially calcified, full of bacteria and develop in crypts in the tonsils. They smell pretty bad, but do not always cause bad breath (again, you have to ask someone). In the large majority of cases, bad breath can be dramatically improved or eliminated. Children as young or two or three can have bad breath from postnasal drip, dental plaque and transient throat infections. However, if they develop sudden offensive odor that appears to come from all over their body, ask the physician to check whether they stuffed something up one of their nostrils.

In most cases (about 90%), bad breath comes from the mouth itself

5 Low Cost Ways to Soothe the Sting of Sunburn E

ach of us most likely has at least one memory of nasty sunburn. Whether experienced personally, or by a close family member or friend, the symptoms are likely to include anything from red hot skin either tender or painful to touch, to nausea, dehydration, blistering and flaking or peeling of the skin. As anyone who has experienced bad sunburn will verify, the amount of time spent causing the sunburn, is largely disproportionate to the length of time that can be spent suffering the consequences of its effects. In this respect and depending on the severity of burning, -- pain and discomfort can persist for several days after the event, as the body works to heal and recover from the unprotected UV exposure. Unless the symptoms are severe, (in which instance you may need to consider medical treatment), here are 5 simple home remedies that will cost you next to nothing, and which will assist in soothing the sting and pain of sunburn:

1. Cool baths: - Soaking in a cool * bath is one of the best ways to draw heat from the skin and soothe the pain and discomfort of sunburn. (Avoid cold as this can cause the body to go into shock.) Here are some additional things to add to your baths for further relief:

(a) Add 10 drops of so of essential oil (chamomile or lavender) to the bath. Soak for 15 minutes or until relief is felt. (b) Adding baking soda (or oatmeal) to a lukewarm bath can also relieve sunburn pain. For this treatment to work best, try to make sure that all affected areas are submerged. Bath water can be poured over your body using your hands or a soft washcloth. Burned facial areas can be gently dabbed using the cloth, or alternately you can splash water directly onto your face. After soaking, lightly pat the skin dry with a soft towel (preferably cotton). If you’ve take an oatmeal bath, let the light coating of oatmeal that clings to your skin remain. (c) Adding vinegar to the bath water will help in taking the sting out of sunburn.

2. Rubbing alcohol: - Because it evaporates so quickly, dabbing on rubbing alcohol will quickly cool and ease the pain of sunburned skin. 3. Vinegar: - Vinegar is an effective

and cooling treatment for sunburn. Soak towels with it, and apply to the burned areas. Alternately you can fill a spray bottle and spray it directly on the skin as needed.

4. Egg Whites: - If your burn is painfully hot, separating the white from the yolk of an egg, and then spreading the white over the affected area will help to cool the burning instantly. This can be repeated as often as needed. 5. Potatoes: - Potatoes can also be used to relieve the pain of sunburn. Take 2 potatoes and wash them well. Cut them into tiny chunks and place in a blender to liquefy. (If the result appears too dry, add some water). Pat the affected areas with potato juice. Wait until dry, and then rinse off in a cool shower or bath. Remember that as well as causing varying degrees of discomfort and pain, repeated sun exposure and sunburn also accelerates the aging process and can increase the risk of cataracts and skin cancer. Prevention therefore should also always be considered more preferable than treatment!

DISCLAIMER: These are home remedy tips only, and should not replace your regular health care provider. If in doubt at any time in relation to your sunburn, please seek the appropriate health care assistance.

Blogshop GALORE After suffering a few years of relative malaise, the world of online commerce for small-scale boutiques, or what we call ‘blogshops’, has finally taken off. Today, it is hardly surprising to find a large number of staunch in-store shoppers spending more time scouring offers from home instead. If you’re guilty of the above, you’ll probably already know that in the case of hunting for goods online, many names inevitably come to mind. With such a massive plethora of options, you can’t help but to be left spoilt for choice. So which blogshop reigns as crème of the crop? We know it’s a tough one, but while that remains a question left to be answered, we thought you might like to check out our featured five for this month!

Behind the name of every blogshop is a story; behind the name of The Quiet Riot is a story quite unlike any other. You see, we’re all familiar with the subtly feminine, sweet and sophisticated names of blogshops. So when we hear of the name The Quiet Riot, we can’t help but to scratch our heads and wonder: what’s in this name? Launched in December 2010, The Quiet Riot, defines itself as the belief in style being an extension of your personality with a combination of the things we love with heightened passion. Founder Grace Tan, 24, describes the The Quiet Riot in her blog as “a peaceful demonstration fed by a love for fashion, music and photography”. One look at its timeless vintage-themed layout and you’ll instantly know that their one-of-a-kind stylized fashion sense is more than just a business to them – it’s really what they’re all about. In line with the rather uniquely named and artistically designed blogshop is a range of eccentrically edgy fashion apparels and accessories. Don’t be surprised to find items like their Wax Lyrical Cube Ring, Talon Claw Hinged Bangle, Killer Spike Loafers and Exodus Alligator Boots. Take a tour round The Quiet Riot and you’ll most definitely unveil a whole lot more.

10 CLOTHING ITEMS NO WOMEN SHOULD BE WITHOUT Fashions come and go and personal preferences will obviously rule in your closet. But there are some classic items that no woman should be without. Here are ten pieces of clothingv that every woman needs in her wardrobe rotation: 1. Mid-length camel trench coat.

6. A black pencil skirt.

2. Fitted black blazer.

7. A perfectly cut t-shirt in a dozen colors

3. A great pair of jeans.

8. A black string bikini.

4. A white button-down.

9. A really nice day dress.

Burberry’s camel trenches are probably the most famous, for a reason: they’re timeless, never go out of style, and go with every- thing in your wardrobe.

it’s not just for work: wear it on the weekend or use it to top off a polished evening dress (celebs like Alexa Chung and Jennifer Aniston have worked this style on the red carpet).

Figure out the style that works for your body, be it fitted, skinny, whatever. Then buy that style in a classic dark wash and wear to death.

What can’t this shirt do? Well, it can’t iron itself.

5. A well-made pair of nude pumps.

You need look no further than everyone’s favorite royal Kate Middleton to understand the power of a pair of round-toe, mid heel nude pumps. She wears them with almost every outfit in her closet, and we wouldn’t be surprised if she owns multiple pairs of the same shoe.

It’s classic and versatile; make it work appropriate or make it sexy with different tops and shoes.

When you find that perfectly soft, perfectly cut t-shirt, stock up in addition to basic black and white, buy all the colors you love, in short and long sleeves.

It’s flattering on everyone and never goes out of style. And after all, shouldn’t the beach be about relaxing, not worrying about your wardrobe?

Not a sun dress, not clubwear, not a glittery black evening number. Something that can be made dressy or casual, in a flattering fit and color (or neutral) that you love. You’ll wear it again and again, to parties, wed- dings, job interviews, and dinner with the in-laws.

10. A lacy black bra. Enough said!

TRAVELING 123

Advice On Being Ready To Travel To A Vacation Destination Pretty much everyone enjoys going to another place far from home to relax, but it won’t go smoothly if you’re not cautious. This article is here to help you know what to do before taking off. Make sure to follow it so you will remember your trip for how well it went. Write down exactly when everything is supposed to happen before heading off. Make a copy of any flight times and any checkout times. Leave one with someone you know near where you live

so they can check on your home while you are gone. Follow your plans as closely as possible and allow yourself at least an hour before every flight you take or hotel you need to make it to. Being too early is a lot better than being too late when you’re traveling, especially by airplane. Leaving personal information with a good friend or family member is recommended. If something were to happen they could attempt to get you some help. Also, if you get your debit card stolen or something they will have the information to get all of your finances frozen for you. If you have a spare credit card or anything of that nature, leave it with them as well. Your finances should be well organized before you leave to go anywhere. Utilities will still need to be paid for some things, and you don’t want to get to your vacation spot just to find out your bank over drafted to pay your rent or something. Get bills paid that you usually pay, like credit cards and the like. If you will be gone for a while, tell your landlord about it so they can keep an eye out for your things.

Check in before arriving at the airport just to make sure everything is still going as planned. Weather can pop up or things like broken equipment can make things go a little more slowly. You can also find out if they still have you in the system with a reservation. This will put your mind at ease and allow you to either hurry or take a little more time to get things in order. Always travel with as little as you can. Luggage can get lost and it can also be stolen. Try to limit how much jewelry you bring and watch all of your electronics very carefully. Luggage needs to stay with you whenever you’re not in the air or on the road. Keep a close eye on it because it’s really hard to find out where it went if it goes missing since people are traveling quickly and in all directions at most travel hubs. A vacation trip shouldn’t be such a nightmare so just plan carefully and use the things that this article told you to do. We only get to get away a few times in our life. Why should it be miserable? Have fun on every trip you make and don’t allow anything to stand in your way!

Are you traveling with small children?

Going on a vacation with your small children is a lot of fun but it requires you to plan your trip carefully. Read this article for some useful tip on how to plan a successful vacation with your small children.

Keep in mind that some destinations and some accommodations will not be practical if you have small children. Wait until your children are older if you want to go on a long road trip, unless you have a camping car. Going on a camping trip is a good idea if your children are not babies anymore. If you want to go abroad, pick a destination where you will be able to find food and clean water for your small children and avoid countries with extreme temperatures since small children are more sensitive to heat or cold temperatures. Going on a vacation is an occasion for you to relax and live on a different schedule but these changes might actually cause stress for your young children. You should put your children to bed at the same time they usually go to sleep and make sure they get

their meals at fixed hours. Your young children probably have things they always do before they go to bed, such as having you read them a story. You should do your best to respect these small rituals so your child feels at home.

Find some activities your children will enjoy. Keep in mind that museums and historical landmarks might not be very exciting for your children, but you can make these things more interesting by talking to your children about what you are about to go visit and telling them some fun stories. You should also plan to go to a zoo, an aquarium or an amusement park during your vacation. Keep in mind that spending the entire day visiting things can be exhausting for your children. You should plan your trip back and forth in details so your children are comfortable. If you are driving, plan on stopping frequently so your children can get out of the car and play. Bring some snacks and some activities to keep them busy. If you need to drive for long hours, consider driving at night so your

children sleep through most of the trip. If you are flying to your destination, take the time to talk to your children about the airport and explain that you expect them to behave and follow you. Going on a vacation with your children should be an occasion to spend some quality time with them. Find some fun activities you can do together and talk to your children about the exciting things you did during your vacation. Take plenty of pictures and look at them with your children once you get home. Your family vacation should become a tradition your children look forward to. Keep in mind that the memories you create during these trips will be treasured by your children. Use these tips to plan your next vacation in details. You might have to wait until your children are older to go abroad or on an exciting road trip, but that does not mean you cannot enjoy your the trips you will take with your young children.
