SU L L IVA N T H E AT R E After a devastating fire in 2006, Pilgrim Baptist Church was nothing but a shell. Sullivan Theatre is an adaptive reuse project of this landmark to turn it into a vibrant restaurant and performance center. The design is based on the intense contrast between its historical use & detail work against my own vision for hospitality in contemporary ti mes.

T HE P O LA ROID CON CEPT Polarity: the state of having two opposite or contradictory tendencies, opinions, or aspects. The goal of this restaurant is to give a snapshot into the building’s past while presenting itself in contemporary circumstances. The design will exploit these differences through high contrast materials and lighting, but will also make reference back to former patterns and detail work.

08

THE VI SI ON The south side of Chicago has a stigma against it. Without new investors, the communities within it will continue to fall further into decay. The purpose of the Sullivan Theatre is to start an economic resurgance in the Bronzeville neighborhood. Its presence will bring life back to a deterioriating Chicago Landmark that was once a bright beacon in the community for faith and music, and be a starting place to draw new investors into the area.

Within each space you will find patterns created by Louis Sullivan used in the previous structure. The entryway features a grazed lit texture wall behind the reception desk, while the lounge has a special bar face and dividing screen. The flooring creates a contemporary contrast through a poured resin and metal wave pattern against dark hardwood.

Th e F ie l d Mus e um As an intern at The Field Museum, my role was to conceptualize and make visualizations for both future projects as well as those already in the process of being fabricated or renovated. In total, I was able to work on nine projects in various stages, one of which I got the pleasure of seeing come to fruition during my last week. The following are a few examples of these projects. Right: rendered concept for Stanley Field Hall Revonvation.

BI RTHDAY ROOM Besides displaying artifacts of natural history, The Field also often holds special events, including children’s birthday parties. Because there is no dedicated space for it, the museum has to inconvenience other guests by blocking off an area to hold it. My role in this project was to conceptualize and design a space within the design director’s given empty floor plan where they are planning to build. The result was a neutral, but fully customizable space featuring an undulating cove light around the perimeter of the room, two programmable LED screens, a kitchenette, and seating for around 100 guests.

LOOKIN G AT OUR SELV ES : RETHIN KI NG T H E S CUL PT UR ES OF M A LV INA H OF F MA N In the 1930s, The Field Museum displayed a series of sculptures under the title “The Races of Mankind. In January 2016, they re-displayed these same pieces under the new context of racism in The United States. My role in this project included altering the floor plan as needed, editing and building parts of its Sketchup model, and producing the final render ings to be approved by the board of trustees at The Field.

Americans ex hibit. The concept ‘Echoes’ reflects how Native American history and tradition has affected the current Native American culture, but does not restrict its progress into the future. The space features both historical objects from The Field’s collections as well as contemporary pieces by today’s artists. This project was created in conjunction with Angelica Guzman.

3 D S ECT I O N Section of entire exhibit gives context of how areas come together. Flexible opendisplay systems provide visitors with close interaction with objects. Corner spaces give intimate details of the Native Americans’ often painful history. Center screens show traditional dances while providing a space for events. Draped fabric panels create a cloud-like atmosphere on the ceiling and disperse towards center event space.

AIRB N B H O S T This project began after a consultation with a couple looking to create an AirBnb on the second level of their home. With the parameters of being able to use existing furniture and decoration along with a minimal budget, I created an eclectic and minimally styled interior to draw in potential guests. I then photographed and edited photos of the space for their listing; and, created a magazine booklet outlining the accomodations and attractions nearby.

P u b l ic F UR N I T UR E An exploration of furniture for public use. This project transforms the last bit of nongreen space on Michigan Avenue in Chicago from an unused concrete slab with benches to a retreat fo r local business people and college students. An organic, but geometric shape defines an area to sit peacefully near the center reflecting pool.

P e rso n a l Wo r ks Long before I ever entered design school, my heart had been consumed with a passion for the fine arts. If I hadn’t been an artist, I would never have become a designer. Now that I am trained in both, I have a creative depth like never before.
