THERE’S MUCH TO LOVE about working at Savannah magazine — most notably curating the stories important to this city and its residents. Considering The Style Issue you’re holding now, however, I’d like to reveal another work perk: we are a denimfriendly office. As such, I wear jeans every day, and I’ve started to wonder if I’m in a bit of a sartorial rut. Did Oscar Wilde, Joan Didion, Tom Wolfe and a host of other literaryfashion icons pave the way for me to schlep around in faded denim? So imagine my surprise when Emily Bargeron — ahem, a fashion designer — shared on page 119 that her own wardrobe workhorse is a decades-old jean jacket. While putting together this issue, more discoveries followed, like the remarkable, artistic through-lines between contemporary Savannah and medieval Spain, transmuted into wearable silks by the designers at Tulicarpa. Or the crucial balance between style and function in the kitchen, as evidenced by Libbie Summers’ charming linen aprons. Or the burgeoning local athletic brands making a splash right here, right now. Of course, style isn’t just what we wear. It’s in the way we carry ourselves, whether we’re in a ballgown or maybe a pair of blue jeans. And as the following pages prove, style and stories weave together beautifully.

LUCKING OUT Citizens can count on the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade with the same level of assurance they can count on the Georgia heat and humidity: Every year, the parade begins on March 17 at 10:15 a.m. at the corner of Gwinnett and Abercorn streets and concludes by 2 p.m. at Madison Square. This year, however, it’s missing one of its key players, WTOC News Creative Director Craig Harney, who passed away in December. Harney helped spearhead the live-stream of the St. Patrick‘s Day mass and parade some 25 years ago. Now, it’s available all over the world via the WTOC website, Facebook and Amazon Fire. The Savannah St. Patrick‘s Day Parade Committee, headed by General Chairman Lawrence “Bubba“ Edgerly, created an award in Harney’s honor, to be given to a special family, band or participant every year to ensure his vital impact lives on. For those wishing to pay homage to Irish history, visit the Savannah Blarney Stone on River Street or at City Market during St. Paddy’s festivities (the rest of the year, the stone “lives” at Cohen’s Retreat, 5715 Skidaway Road). Purchased from Blarney Castle in Ireland, the 600-pound stone is rumored to bestow the gift of eloquence to anyone who kisses it. Locals and visitors can test its powers for just $5 and walk away feeling lucky — proceeds benefit charities both local and national. —REBEKAH SCARBOROUGH

Digging Deep Deep Center gives Savannah’s youth a platform for their voices and stories Written by AMBER M. SMITH / Photography by LAURA MULDER
SINCE OPENING IN 2008, Deep Center has helped more than 4,000 young Savannahians find their creative voices. Using writing, arts and culture as a springboard, Deep Center, affectionately dubbed “Deep,” builds learning and agency for Savannah’s marginalized youth through the art of creative storytelling. “Deep disrupts dehumanizing narratives with firsthand stories about thriving through individual growth and collective action,” says director of development and communications Coco Papy. “We celebrate who [our students] are, challenge them to express themselves powerfully, and support their critical awareness of how their stories intersect with their neighborhood, their city and the world beyond.” Many of Deep’s youth come from working-class and overlooked communities, Papy says. Deep strives to lift them up, giving the youth and those in their village — family, caretakers, friends and neighbors — the best tools for success. As such, Deep’s programs range from literary initiatives, such as the Young Author Project for middle school students and Block by Block for high school students, to Adult Learning, which is expanding this year to include justice work with the school district. Deep’s most diverse programming comes from its drop-in workshops, where students might learn cupcake decorating in one session and music videography in the next. In each program, students work with mentors (known as “teaching artists” in Deep’s parlance) to hone their crafts. “I was intrigued and inspired by Deep’s mantra, ‘Our Stories Matter,’ ” says Ariel Felton, a teaching artist and publications manager who started as a volunteer. “It sounds so simple, but in truth, I don’t think a lot of youth feel like their stories and voices do matter. I’m proud to be a part of turning that around.” At events like Deep Speaks, the Young Author Project’s end-of-semester book launch and live reading, students share their writing with the Savannah community. Each summer, Block by Block students have their own showcase. According to Papy, attendance for a single Deep event can reach up to 600 people. Last year, Deep Center published its first policy brief, outlining youth-powered policy recommendations for a more equitable Savannah. Deep’s action research team spent a full year developing the brief, which is being presented to city

governments, police departments, school boards and legislators. “Deep’s youth disrupt the stereotypes, challenge bias and structural inequities, and create the possibility of change,” Papy says. The center’s work hasn’t gone unnoticed: Deep received a National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award in 2015, the nation’s highest honor for this type of organization. In November, the center also received a $150,000 grant from Forward Promise, a division of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Such lofty accolades are certainly welcome, but Deep is first and foremost a youth-centered organization. During a recent Block by Block workshop, teaching artist Marquice Williams left his writing students to consider a novel idea: “Your greatest work of art is yourself, and who you are becoming,” he said. As Deep youth evolve as creative storytellers, they also learn to see themselves as leaders in their communities — with all the tools they need to remove any barriers to success.

Take her series of dresses, including an emerald cheongsam, a mod houndstooth shift dress, a dainty calico number, and plentiful high-necked frocks in shades of mustard, blush and teal. That said, it’s not necessarily today’s fashion that interests her. “My paintings and needlepoint works recontextualize outmoded styles and give them new meanings,” Burson shares in her artist statement. feel fresh and modern. “I incorporate all these things, like vintage clothing and classic style, to make something that is artful, odd and mysterious,” she says. Such anachronistic work is also right at home in Savannah, where you might see a horse-drawn carriage trot past, or historic structures housing modern art (the SCAD Museum of Art, 601 Turner Blvd., is a prime example). “Savannah has new life in old spaces,” Burson says, noting the city's vibrant arts scene and peculiar characters. “There’s a freedom to express yourself here.”

Ready for Primetime Council of Dads puts modern-day Savannah in the spotlight Written by JESSICA LEIGH LEBOS
SAVANNAHIANS ARE PLENTY accustomed to glimpsing familiar landmarks on screens big and small, and our fair city finds more close-ups with the new television series Council of Dads, premiering March 10 on NBC at 10 p.m. Unlike productions where our oaks and architecture serve as mere general Southern background dressing, however, Council of Dads is actually set in modern day Savannah, where everyday life here helps drive the drama. It also happens to be based on the true-life memoir of Savannah native and New York Times best-selling author Bruce Feiler. In 2008, when he discovered a malignant tumor in his leg,

Feiler gathered his best dad friends around him for guidance. As he faced months of harrowing treatment (thankfully, he’s been cancer-free for almost a decade), he managed to turn the experience and his insights about male friendships into one of his most popular books. “During the worst time of my life, I had the best idea of my life,” shares Feiler, whose new book, Life is in the Transitions: Mastering Change in a Nonlinear Age, is due out in May. The TV adaptation of Council of Dads revolves around Scott Perry, a middle-aged dad diagnosed with cancer who creates a circle of positive male role models for his children to call on should

he not survive. Starring Tom Everett Scott (13 Reasons Why), Sarah Wayne Callies (of The Walking Dead fame) and a host of other faces recognizable to Netflix bingers, the series follows the characters from one local stomping ground to the next, including the soccer fields of Daffin Park and the beaches of Tybee Island. Almost every scene has been shot on location, with a few exceptions filmed at the soundstages of the Savannah Film Factory on Fahm Street, where set designers reproduced specific haunts like the kitchen of The Original Crab Shack on Tybee down to the last detail. In a media landscape of make-believe stories, the producers wanted to ground Council of Dads in a real place that informs the plot with its own culture and conflicts. “I think Savannah could be considered another character in the show,” says Clive Standen (Taken), who plays the main character’s best friend. “It’s so distinctive. If we were to take this and put it in a studio in Los Angeles, it simply wouldn’t be the same.” (Standen, originally from Ireland, reports that he and his fellow castmates “absolutely adore” the city and spent their downtime during the production poking around downtown shops and walking around Forsyth Park, which he calls “magical.”) While the Council of Dads book focuses more on his current home of New York City, Feiler, who is also listed as a producer for the series, is overjoyed that the showrunners chose to set the TV version in Savannah. Visiting with his family on set, he muses that the enchanting locales and characters’ compassion could be just what viewers need now. “We’re coming off of this antihero trend in TV, and I think that people are craving a reminder that we can connect,” he says. “And Savannah is central to the whole thing.”

A glimpse inside Bradley Lock and Key Shop during the 1950s
STEPPING INTO BRADLEY Lock and Key Shop, in a faded, brick storefront on State Street, is like stepping back in time. Dusty skeleton keys, timeworn iron locks, an 18th-century cannon and a large church bell from 1901 fill the main room. Framed photographs of the Bradley family mingling with generations of notable Savannahians line the walls. The shop is a piece of Savannah history that has served customers with the same tailored, reliable service for nearly a century. After more than 90 years at 24 E. State St., not much has changed at Bradley Lock and Key Shop, but there’s a fresh face behind the counter. Andrew
Bradley, 24, now helms the shop, bringing new life to the family business, which first opened (in a different location) in 1883. Bradley is the grandson of the shop’s revered patriarch, William Houdini Bradley, known as “Dini,” who was the face and personality of the lock business for decades. He earned his nickname from iconic escape artist, magician and locksmith Harry Houdini, a friend of Dini’s father, Aaron Bradley. Generations of Savannahians have stopped in at Bradley Lock and Key Shop, getting keys made for their home, or outfitting their businesses with new locks. If they didn’t have money to pay for their keys, Dini would just smile and tell them to come by the shop another day when they could settle up. “He was always willing to help anyone out,” Bradley recalls. Andrew Bradley and his siblings began working summers in the shop at a very young age, and have seen clients who hung around Bradley Lock and Key Shop as children when their parents needed keys return as adults, ushering in a new generation of customers. The shop also was known as Savannah’s premier gunsmith for about 50 years; Dini’s brother, Eddie Bradley, worked on a variety of new and antique firearms before retiring in the early 2000s. That cannon on the counter? A holdover from the shop’s artillery past. Dini Bradley passed away in December. Support from friends and colleagues poured in after his death, Bradley shares, noting he traces the longtime success of the business back to his grandfather’s knack for establishing personal, meaningful relationships with customers. “Seeing the way the community just loved on our family after my grandad passed away was amazing,” Bradley says. “Half of Savannah must have been at his funeral.” A dusty bronze plaque affixed to the counter captures the spirit of the eccentric lock shop: “There is no other place anywhere near this place that is just like this place. So, this must be the place.” With a new Bradley in charge of the storied Savannah key maker, the young shop owner says he hopes Bradley Lock and Key Shop remains the place for generations — of his family and of Savanniahans — to come. The Art of Dressing Tulicarpa spins history into wearable silks Written by NICOLE BLACKWOOD
Photography courtesy of TULICARPA
TULICARPA’S LUMINOUS SILK dresses and shawls are more than beautifully patterned clothes. They’re portals into another place and time. The history of art is woven literally into these ornate designs, inspired by 15th- and 16th-century paintings on view at the Prado Museum, Spain’s cultural jewel in Madrid. The rose gold trellis pattern, for example, is drawn from the floral motifs that adorn the background of Juan Sánchez’s 1460 painting, “The Crucifixion,” while the teal and gold St. Stephen silk is inspired by the robe of the martyred saint in an altarpiece by Juan de Juanes made between 1555 and 1562. Named for Santa Tulicarpa, a mythic Spanish saint who turned tile into silk, Tulicarpa is the brainchild of designer Lily Lewin, who just over

a year ago began weaving together the artistic talents of three local women — painters Mariana Langley and Simoni Trapsioni, and clothier Cate Lyon — calling on their artistry and craftsmanship to help transform historic artworks into wearable silks. Each pattern is born from a physical encounter with a painting or building discovered during Lewin’s travels to Spain and elsewhere in Europe, where she spends half the year with her husband, Lucas, a retired doctor from Madrid. While Tulicarpa’s shawls and dresses originate from a historical source, each pattern begins with a newly commissioned painting either by botanical watercolorist and chief collaborator Langley or by neo-surrealist painter Trapsioni. These handcrafted images — of lover’s eyes or celestial skies — are then digitally scanned and manipulated into a repeat pattern before being printed on silk in China. The fabrics return to Savannah (a place that serendipitously served as a silk colony in the 18th century), where they are cut and stitched into bespoke custom dresses or Spanish-inspired shawls by couturier extraordinaire Lyon. Digital technology makes such global collaboration possible, but at its core, Tulicarpa embodies handcrafted attention to detail and craftsmanship, cutting through the common cliches and homogenization of so much contemporary fashion and instead drawing on a long tradition of custom-made clothes. “It’s a deliberate choice of aesthetics,” Lewin says, “rooted in history and symbolism.” England founded Savannah in part as a strategic buffer against the Spanish in Florida, but Lewin sees many similarities between the Hostess City and Spain. Through her time in both places, she’s come to find haunting parallels between ghosts in Southern gothic culture and the fantasmes of Iberia. There’s also a shared emphasis on hospitality and the ritual of getting dressed up, Lewin says — in particular, the importance of appearance as an expression of pride and respect. Tulicarpa speaks to all these histories: the brand is a renaissance of elegant dressing within an artistic storyline that tells of self, of place and of spirit. Lewin says there are no plans for a brick-andmortar store in Savannah (or Madrid, for that matter), but shoppers can purchase the fabrics, shawls and dresses online at Tulicarpa.com, or visit occasional pop-up shops around town at The Paris Market and Brocante, Perry Lane Hotel or Satchel.

SOME 150 YEARS AGO, many Savannahians would have had day clothes, dinner clothes and evening attire, too. Now, we’ve got athleisure. Athleisure, the term for fashionable athletic clothes that take you from workout class to errands to lounging at home, is arguably America’s favorite portmanteau (sorry, brunch). And while shoppers can find its defining pieces — leggings that sculpt and tops that breathe in the softest technical fabrics — at big-box stores and clothing chains, Ōtium Studio offers a curated collection of high-end activewear for women inside its sleek downtown shop. Many of the brands available at Ōtium are made in America, and some even have a built-in charitable component, like n:philanthropy, which donates 10 percent of its net proceeds to pediatric cancer research and animal welfare. It’s clothing that puts you — mind and body — in a comfortable, stylish place.

ENTER THROUGH THE original glass door of Blanche Nettles Powers’ downtown Taylor Street residence, and you might notice the radiant natural light, or the gentle curves of the home’s Victorian-era bannister, or maybe the hypnotizing grayscale floor tiles in one of two perfectly appointed kitchens. Nettles Powers acknowledges such beauty, but quickly points out the sinks. Call it an occupational hazard. As a contemporary visual artist, Nettles Powers’ work centers heavily on experimentation and improvisation. Brushes, oil paints, India ink, raw canvas and even Spanish moss (it creates the airy texture found in some of her most recent pieces) are all likely to make cameos while Nettles Powers works. In a nutshell, things can get messy, and she’s palpably excited to have four sinks in the downstairs area of her new studio/residence. “In my last studio, I had one little bathroom sink I used for everything,” she recalls. Now, she can choose from an original cast-iron sink in the studio’s front room, a large soaking sink in the kitchen, an additional kitchen sink, or, for old time’s sake, the bathroom sink. A multitude of sinks are one happy adjustment, and the studio’s location — just around the corner from Nettles

Powers’ full-time residence on Charlton Street — is another. “The idea of being able to walk to the studio every day was so appealing to me,” says Nettles Powers, whose previous studio wasn’t nearly as close to home. One night, while taking her dog, Two Socks, for a walk, she and her husband, Andy, noticed the property and “made a mental note,” ultimately taking the plunge when a for-sale sign went up in 2018. The home, built circa 1888, featured a floor plan well suited to creating the ground-floor studio along with a charming upper-level residence, which now includes a kitchen, living room, two bedrooms and bathroom. It also faces north, which Nettles Powers says offers the best working light. “Northern light is great, because it’s just a nice, even, soft light,” Nettles Powers says. “It’s not at all harsh.” Soon after purchasing the property, Nettles Powers

got to work with a complete renovation, partnering with Carroll Construction and designer Andrew Carleton, who was particularly helpful with clever tweaks to the floor plan, like creating an open-concept kitchen upstairs. New sheetrock walls went up (the original plaster simply couldn’t be salvaged), as did heating and cooling systems, wiring and plumbing. Design decisions came after, but Nettles Powers’ artistic eye made the process simple. “I wanted to use classic, natural materials in a new way,” she says. That meant a deep, rich walnut for the upstairs kitchen cabinets and soapstone countertops downstairs — “I read they use soapstone in science labs a lot because chemicals won’t penetrate it. I figured that would be a good material for an art studio.” Throughout, the space stays true to its Victorian roots (note the tortoiseshell tile on the original fireplace downstairs) with pops of mid-century flair. There’s an Eames chair tucked into the corner of the living room, and the pared-back bedrooms have a minimalist, Zen quality. And, of course, there’s plenty of artwork. “I have many artist friends and colleagues, so there’s usually some sort of connection with the artist or the work itself,” Nettles Powers says as she points out a series of six saturated, delightfully drippy pieces from local artist Betsy Cain that serve as a focal point in one of the home’s bedrooms. Her own pieces are on display both in the upperlevel residence and in the studio below, although the walls are currently a little bare — Nettles Powers, who’s represented by the Kim Foster Gallery in Manhattan, recently had an almost sold-out show. A walkable studio complete with artist-friendly upgrades like exhaust fans, track lighting and extended-width chair railing to accommodate her canvases has been a great gift professionally, Nettles Powers says, with the added benefit of allowing for her three college-age sons, extended family, friends and even visiting artists to have a place to stay. “My son, Sam, is at school in Boston, and right away he said, ‘Can I stay at the apartment with some of my friends for spring break?’ I’m excited to be able to offer that to him,” Nettles Powers says. Eventually, she hopes to have occasional

renters and a designated calendar for family and friends. Further afield, one of her sons might even move in. “Or who knows?” she says. “Maybe us. I really tried to design it thinking about how I would want it to be if I lived here.” Nettles Powers grew up in Savannah, and while she’s “taken stints” living elsewhere, she’s content to remain — and host others — in the Hostess City. There’s a built-in family connection, after all: her children were raised here, and her second-oldest son now attends SCAD, where Nettles Powers received her painting MFA. “My father was an orthopedic surgeon, but he compared it to carpentry in a way, and I remember seeing him come home with plaster under his fingernails,” she says. “Maybe that came from him, this desire I’ve always had to build and create things with my hands.” The Taylor Street residence might be her best work to date.

11 a.m.: Shout-out to my amazing team — I work with them on planning our buying trips, store events, marketing plans, brand research and social media posts. 12 p.m.: For lunch, I usually order the Mexican chicken salad to-go from Kayak Kafé. If I have time, I’ll meet friends for lunch next door at The Five Spot’s Broughton Street location. 2 p.m.: Back at the store, I help our customers find the perfect outfit. I’ll also brainstorm ideas for Southern Authority, a lifestyle YouTube channel I co-host with Paris Laundry owner Kelsey Bucci and Chapel Hair Salon owner Tyler Lively.

6:30 p.m: Home! I take our dogs, Blue and Enzo, for a walk. Then, we start Astor’s bedtime routine: bath, pajamas, a bottle and stories. I absolutely cherish this part of my day. 7:30 p.m.: My husband and I take turns cooking. My go-to meal is zucchini noodles with turkey sausage, paired with an Italian red from Savannah Wine Cellar. We usually have dinner at home, but we try to work in date night every few weeks at Squirrel’s Pizza or Husk. 9:30 p.m.: My favorite way to end the day is with a bubble bath. Afterward, I use The Everywhere Oil from Paris Laundry and skincare items from the Dr. Barbara Sturm line.
10:30 p.m.: I’ll scroll through Instagram and Twitter in bed for a bit, but I’m asleep by 11.

That’s a Wrap Aprons go high fashion with Libbie Summers’ new collection Written by SARAH TAYLOR ASQUITH
A WEEK IN THE LIFE of Libbie Summers goes something like this: Shoot video content for IGTV and YouTube, serve as creative consultant for multiple brands, travel for speaking engagements, and dream up delicious, approachable recipes plus whimsical designs and crafts. There’s also what Photography by DAVID DEMPSEY
might be her biggest project yet, The Libbie Summers Yum Yum Smile Shop, a living goods line she launched in late 2018. The online shop started with cheerful, artisanal sprinkles and has now expanded into apparel — most notably, the Culinary Salon collection of aprons. But to simply call

these garments aprons doesn’t do justice. “They’re meant to go from kitchen to street,” Summers says. “They’re very French-meets-Japanese, which is how I dress and what I love.” The aprons are made from Japanese linen and come in four styles, including the Cuisine wrap dress, which Summers had on during our interview, paired with easy layers of navy and black and her signature Oxford shoes. There’s also the Atelier, a double-layer pinafore apron dress (The Grey’s Mashama Bailey recently picked one up in both black and chambray); the Chamber, which looks like a long flowy skirt in the front but ties in back like a chambermaid’s apron (artist Katherine Sandoz paints in hers); and the Shopkeep, the closest in the group to a traditional bib apron, yet with a rounded, feminine neckline (the staff at Lori Judge’s Yaupon Teahouse wear it in dark gray). Four additional pieces will follow later this spring, including the Kitchen Pant, with pintucks for a flat front and wide-cut legs that taper just so. Summers envisioned each design down to the length of the ties — “they have to be able to wrap around the front and back of you,” she notes — and the depth of the pockets — “they need to actually hold things.” Next, she worked with Rebecca TannerRussell, of Savannah’s Port City Sewing Factory, who produced the pieces and offered invaluable tips along the way. Tanner-Russell is only one of the many people whom Summers regularly collaborates with in the local community — a creative group she describes as “more inspiring than anything else.” While the Culinary Salon collection is new, its impetus goes back 10 years, when Summers designed an apron dress to wear on TV sets while styling food. “I just wanted something that I could work in and still go outside in,” she recalls. “I wanted it to be beautiful because I was making beautiful food.” Summers wore that apron dress over and over again before making a prototype of the Cuisine style last year. Soon, she realized she had a business on her hands. Summers is in the process of securing wholesale accounts, and the collection is currently sold on her website, YumYumSmileShop.com, where each apron style is paired with a recipe and a food inspiration. “I look at food a little differently than other people,” she says. “It’s not just for sustenance — I see a deeper storytelling side to it. Food is how I approach everything.” LEFT: The Chamber apron, which artist Katherine Sandoz

wears while painting. “There’s nothing ‘too fancy’ to ready yourself for making your best work,” Sandoz says.

Smoked ribs from Backyard BBQ at Cohen's Retreat
Fired Up Backyard BBQ offers low-and-slow, to-go Written by REBEKAH SCARBOROUGH
A REPURPOSED STORAGE shed houses Cohen’s Retreat’s latest, delicious venture: a takeout-only barbecue joint called Backyard BBQ. If you get lost (easy to do at the sprawling, multi-use Retreat) look for the vintage red pick-up truck out front — or simply follow your nose. The Backyard BBQ menu is eclectic, offering classic options like pulled pork, ribs and other smoked meats alongside wildcard creations like Charleston-style hot wings and Frito pie. Behind it all is pitmaster Sean Goggin, who draws inspiration from all over the (Southern) map. “I have to pay homage, because we’re in the middle of three regions,” Goggin says,
92
SAVANNAHMAGAZINE.COM
noting style influences from the Carolinas and his native state of Texas. “But it really is Savannah-style,” he says. Backyard BBQ’s secret sauce is the fact it’s to-go only, allowing busy folks to grab something quick — something that took hours to make — and enjoy it at home. “We want people to have a nice dinner, but we want to be approachable,” Goggins says. On Instagram, @CohensRestaurant lists hours and specials for Backyard BBQ, which is usually open for takeout from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays. And if carnivores can’t decide what to order, the pitmaster himself has a recommendation: “Come for the brisket.”

Spring Harvest A new grant helps Forsyth Farmers’ Market share the bounty Written by STEVEN ALFORD
FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES do more than just boost overall health and combat a range of chronic diseases. In Savannah, they’re the catalyst for a healthier community, through a network of farmers, educators and clinicians. For the past decade, the Forsyth Farmers’ Market has been an integral part of the effort to keep Savannahians healthy by promoting local produce. The market recently received a big boost to its Photography courtesy of FORSYTH FARMERS‘ MARKET
mission thanks to a $455,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Forsyth Farmers’ Market was one of only eight programs across the country to receive such funding — and this spring, it's using the grant to launch a holistic initiative called 912 Food Farmacy. 912 Food Farmacy aims to strengthen healthy eating habits among low-income, high-risk populations participating in the

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. 912 Food Farmacy will improve community health by increasing nutrition education and access to fresh produce, while also offering financial incentives for farmers and locals alike: Forsyth Farmers’ Market Executive Director Jeb Bush estimates the program will place more than $265,000 worth of healthy food incentives into the hands of participants and will benefit nearly three dozen local farmers through increased sales.
“Being able to bring fresh produce into communities is vitally important to the health of the region.”—Jeb Bush EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
“Twenty-six percent of people in Chatham County are food insecure, meaning they are low-income, don’t have reliable transportation and live more than a half-mile from a grocery store,” Bush says. “Being able to bring fresh produce into communities is vitally important to the health of the region.” The market is partnering with four area health facilities — J.C. Lewis Primary Health Care Center, St. Joseph’s/Candler St. Mary’s Health Center, Memorial Health

Children’s Clinic and Chatham County Health Department — that work firsthand with underserved families and low-income patients, many of whom suffer from obesity and obesityrelated chronic diseases, such as diabetes. Each facility will offer nutrition classes for 50–70 participants, who will then receive vouchers, or “produce prescriptions,” for fresh, local produce redeemable at the Forsyth Farmers’ Market, held most Saturdays in Forsyth Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The vouchers are also redeemable through the program’s food truck, called Farm Truck 912, which stops regularly at 13 locations throughout the county. Bush says the Savannah program received the coveted USDA grant because of its forward-thinking, nutrition-minded leaders. Programs like Healthy Savannah — founded by former mayor Otis Johnson in 2007 and passing notable measures like countywide smoke-free ordinances — have put the city on a path to elevate the health of all residents and bring nutrition to the forefront of civic conversation. “Everything has kind of built upon itself and led to this,” Bush says. 912 Food Farmacy is planting the seeds for a healthier Savannah in 2020. Ultimately, it will yield a harvest that benefits us all.

Putting Down Roots E R I C A D AV I S L O W C O U N T R Y C A T E R I N G Interview by SYLVIE BAGGETT
SAVANNAH NATIVES ERICA and Dwight Davis have a built-in taste for the Lowcountry. Since 2002, the pair have explored both local cuisine and the Lowcountry itself — from Charleston to St. Simons Island — with their catering business, Erica Davis Lowcountry Catering. Recently, the two have grown roots in Thunderbolt, renovating Photography by KATIE McGEE
an old gas station and transforming it into Erica Davis Lowcountry headquarters at 3209 E. Victory Drive. And here’s the most delicious detail: there’s no need to wait for a special event. Guests can enjoy Lowcountry delights like seafood boils, pulled pork and fried shrimp at the on-site restaurant, open Wednesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ON EXPANDING THE BUSINESS: Erica
Davis Lowcountry catering started as a side project, but quickly became popular, and we decided we wanted more. Our priorities were getting bigger, and we were having to rent out larger facilities to use. When Dwight came on in 2015, he expanded the menu and made it more extensive, so we needed a bigger kitchen — that’s when we ran into the property that we operate out of now. Our catering business thrived from there and gave us the opportunity to utilize the space as a restaurant three days a week.
ON THE LOCAVORE MENU: The focus is on foods that we ate growing up here in Savannah and South Georgia with an emphasis on family recipes. The spice mixtures that we’re using are true to the cuisine here. We pretty much always have pulled pork, beef brisket and smoked chicken. Our Lowcountry boils feature local shrimp, fresh corn shucked that day and sausage that’s hand-cranked. We’ve got lots of fresh fish, shrimp and crabs. If we want to try something new, we order it a couple of weeks before we put it on the menu to give us time to experiment.

ON HIGH-QUALITY FOOD: People are so used to farm-raised fish and shrimp, and we just don’t do that. We built our business on food quality and freshness, so it’s a noticeable difference in the taste. The great thing about living in the area is the combination of seafood and fresh vegetables. If we were in Atlanta, the seafood would all be imported. The accessibility aspect really makes a difference in our cuisine. Every ingredient that we use is a fresh ingredient, from the green beans to coleslaw. If the quality of the product isn’t what we want, we’ll wait until it’s better seasonally. ON SAVANNAH’S ENDLESS INFLUENCE:
There’s a lot of family history between the two of us here in Savannah, and our food at Erica Davis Lowcountry represents the culture. The flavors that we’ve grown up with come out in our cooking. If you go back and look at the recipes and celebrations Savannahians had in the last 100 years, they always had really big barbecues with lots of fresh vegetables, oyster roasts and Lowcountry boils where they just threw whatever they had in a pot. We’re extending tradition and putting our own spin on it.

SAVANNAH’S RELATIONSHIP with tennis is no passing fling. In addition to dozens of leagues, programs, senior teams and the Savannah Challenger — a United States Tennis Association tournament happening April 27–May 3 — there’s an opportunity for every level of tennis enthusiast, from spectator to semi-pro. Its widespread appeal has also resulted in apparel brands embracing the sport here at home. Tail Activewear, based in both Savannah and Miami, has been in the women’s active apparel business since 1975. “Our goal in the very beginning — and even today — was to offer women a fashionable alternative to what was on the market,” says Lauren Maddox, the brand’s marketing manager. Tail has helped expand the utility and preconceptions of athleticwear, offering customers garments that are functional both on and off the court. double-duty while running errands, and Tail’s Core Active collection provides wearers with basic layering pieces as appropriate for a match as they are for lunch downtown. “We have some customers who have been wearing Tail Activewear for all 45 years that we’ve been in business,” Maddox says. “It’s ageless.” Tail’s longevity has also helped set the stage for new, local tennis apparel brands, like 40 Lime, founded by Kathryn Hayes as a way to reflect all facets of the sport. “About a year after I started playing, I was helping our team look for a new skirt and found it was difficult to find the right prints, price points, sizing and stock,” Hayes says. “The number of brands out there was limited.” Rather than accept the typical monochrome clothing she was so used to seeing, Hayes took the matter into her own hands. came naturally, given Hayes’ background in fine art. After completing a modern art commission, she realized her work resembled fabric. “That’s what made me think, what if I printed my own art?” Hayes turned to the Lowcountry for inspiration, hand-painting each 40 Lime pattern in punchy pinks, bright greens and deep, ocean blues. All of the brand’s apparel, including its signature printed tennis skirts, plus tanks, tees, zip-up jackets and accessories, is offered in children’s sizes 4 through 10 and women’s sizes XXS to 2XL, ensuring everyone feels comfortable on the court. Lādē Tennis, yet another Savannah-based brand, is built on the idea of inner power. The brand’s tagline, “Sport Confidence,” is a way of
life for owner and founder Bridget Lipman. As one of more than 500 women in the Savannah Tennis League, Lipman has seen firsthand the difference feeling good about yourself can make during a match. “So many different types of women come and play every week,” she says. “It’s a magical community.” With graphic prints, sleek silhouettes and an emphasis on functionality (stay-in-place bloomers are a hallmark of the brand), Lādē Tennis ensures that players everywhere feel both strong and supported. For Savannahians, tennis is just another part of life, much like oyster roasts and hurricane parties. “You’re there to play, but afterward, you socialize,” Lipman says. And thanks to these three brands, you can look great while doing both.

LIFE JACKET For fashion designer and vintage maven Emily Bargeron, choosing a favorite piece of clothing is surprisingly easy Photography by  KATIE McGEE

WHEN MY FIRST collection debuted during Charleston Fashion Week in 2009, I was fresh out of college with no job or cash flow. I designed a 15-piece, one-of-a-kind collection from vintage fabrics that took me three months to construct. Cash offers streamed in after the show, and with just $20 to my name, I summarily declined each one. My attachment to each garment ran deep, and my love for each hand-sewn button and tiny trim outweighed any financial gain. Three months later, sitting in my apartment cluttered with the sample-size collection, and living off of peanut-butterand-jelly sandwiches, I realized that if I wanted to be successful in the fashion industry, I couldn’t have an emotional connection to the garments I created. My landlord, after all, wasn’t going to accept an exceptionally sewn tunic in exchange for room and board. That day I vowed to share great clothing with others and to collect memories rather than things. Post-epiphany, my closet has been a revolving door of beautifully stitched vintage that I purchase from estate sales and thrift stores or score from family and friends. Stacks of vintage bed sheets and 1970s psychedelic-print curtains sit high on the shelves, awaiting their destiny of being sewn into a dress or skirt. I create each piece with the same love as before, but with the express intention of sharing it with others. As for dressing myself? I simply reach for my classic, patch-covered Levi’s denim jacket, which has carried me through milestones, moves and just about any occasion. Personalized jeans became a form of self-expression during the 1960s, when young Americans enthusiastically decorated otherwise-ordinary denim. My jacket is no different: every square inch tells a story, inviting questions and conversation. The tattered denim is covered in bleach spots from tie-dye projects gone wrong and countless, yet meaningful, embroidered patches. A Sedona, Arizona, patch neatly covers a
rip in the denim, reminding me of the time I tried (and failed) to jump a fence and sneak into a VIP party. A Zion National Park patch reminds me of a week-long trek across the desert. The hem is covered in pins from a late-night design session or clamps from a Mamie Ruth photoshoot. It’s the kind of garment that makes finding spare cash in the pocket feel like a gift from an old friend. It’s also designed to last a lifetime. Although my love for vintage began as an admiration for bright colors and prints, it quickly shifted into a desire to try to change the fast-fashion epidemic. During a vintage buying trip in California, I met with an incredibly knowledgeable collector who took me to a vast and dreary warehouse, where bales of discarded clothes were vacuum-sealed and stacked to the ceiling. What’s more, it was a microcosm of a larger problem: the Environmental Protection Agency estimates Americans throw away nearly 17 million tons of clothes each year. This eye-opening experience made me want to try to change the way people shop — and ultimately led to me opening East and Up, where my team and I educate shoppers on the history of clothing, explain the value of buying vintage and breathe new life back into old garments. We rescue used pieces, taking the time to mend holes, dry clean stains, steam the clothes and hang them pridefully among other resurrected beauties. Every so often, we keep an item for ourselves, infusing its rich history with our own unique style. As a designer and store owner, I’m kneedeep in clothes, vintage and otherwise, but I still stick to my rule of collecting memories rather than things. My scrapbook is made of Levi's denim, and the memories are woven deep into the threads.

LINDY MOODY Founding attorney, L. Moody Law Firm, P.C.
Moody sees food as an important way to spread the love — and educate others. “When people think about Southern food, they think of fried chicken and sweet tea,” she says. “It’s so much more than that, though: it’s a culmination of histories, heritages, stories and families.” Fittingly, her blog, Epicuropedia, features creative twists on the classics, like honey carrot cake with oranges. Moody says she almost went to culinary school, but chose law. Now, she gets to have her cake and eat it, too. “Sharing food with others is a way for me to feel connected without having to put on a suit and step into a courtroom.”

AMY LEE COPELAND Managing partner, Rouse + Copeland
A few years ago, Amy Lee Copeland realized she could paint — really well. At a sip-and-paint event, Copeland began improvising rather than following the instructor. “One of my friends looked over and asked if I had ever taken any art lessons, and I said no,” Copeland recalls. “She said, ‘I think it’s time.’” Now, she’s “a bit obsessive about it,” painting everything from sushi rolls to her standard poodle, Emmett, and scheduling 30 minutes of creative time daily. Painting is also a fortuitous complement to Copeland’s criminal defense work. “It helps you see things differently,” she says, “and find beauty in unexpected places.”
JJ COLLINS Commercial real estate title paralegal, HunterMaclean
With a Master of Music from Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute, Collins lends her voice to a variety of productions, including opera, musical theater, jazz and a recent solo cabaret. As for picking her favorite? “It’s usually whatever project I happen to be working on,” she says with a laugh. Collins also finds time in her busy schedule to teach others how to sing — but she wouldn’t have it any other way. “Singing definitely helps me maintain balance. The discipline of studying music enables me to focus on the tasks at hand for hours at a time,” she says. “Those hours in the practice room pay off in more ways than one.”

Avid podcast listeners Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey took things to the next level when last January they started their own. “The Great Trials Podcast” interviews successful, sometimes high-profile trial lawyers who outline their most illustrious cases. While most of its listenership is in the law field, many people have an interest in hearing what happens behind the scenes of a harrowing case, Lowry says. That proof is in the numbers: By the end of 2019, the podcast had racked up nearly 33,000 downloads in countries all over the world. “It’s pretty cool to see we’re on every continent except for Antarctica,” Godfrey says.

Connell and Ellis came to start their acoustic guitar act — aptly named Connellis — from different ends of the spectrum. Connell had stopped performing years prior, but felt he needed a creative outlet; Ellis, meanwhile, wanted to scale back on music to focus more seriously on law, but still felt compelled to play. The result was perfect harmony. The duo takes select gigs, often charity events, which allows them to balance their professional responsibilities with a lifelong love of music — particularly more off-the-beaten path songs. “You’re going to hear stuff you’re maybe not familiar with but will come to appreciate after seeing us a few times,” Ellis says.

Methodology for Best Lawyers® This list is excerpted from the 2020 edition of The Best Lawyers in America©, the pre-eminent referral guide to the legal profession in the United States. Published since 1983, Best Lawyers lists attorneys in 146 specialties, representing all 50 states, who have been chosen through an exhaustive survey in which thousands of the nation’s top lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers. The 2020 edition of Best Lawyers is based on 8.3 million evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers. The method used to compile Best Lawyers remains unchanged since the first edition was compiled almost 40 years ago. Lawyers are chosen for inclusion based solely on the vote of their peers. Listings cannot be bought, and no purchase is required to be included. In this regard, Best Lawyers remains the gold standard of reliability and integrity in lawyer ratings. The nomination pool for the 2020 edition consisted of all lawyers whose names appeared in the previous edition of Best Lawyers, lawyers who were nominated since the previous survey and new nominees solicited from listed attorneys. In general, lawyers were asked to vote only on nominees in their own specialty in their own jurisdiction. Lawyers in closely related specialties were asked to vote across specialties, as were lawyers in smaller jurisdictions. Where specialties are national or international in nature, lawyers were asked to vote nationally as well as locally. Voting lawyers were also given an opportunity to offer more detailed comments on nominees. Each year, half of the voting pool receives fax or email ballots; the other half is polled by phone. Voting lawyers were provided this general guideline for determining if a nominee should be listed among “the best”: “If you had a close friend or relative who needed a real estate lawyer (for example), and you could not handle the case yourself, to whom would you refer them?” All votes and comments were solicited with a guarantee of confidentiality — a critical factor in the viability and validity of Best Lawyers’ surveys. To ensure the rigor of the selection process, lawyers were urged to use only their highest standards when voting and to evaluate each nominee based only on his or her individual merits. The additional comments were used to make more accurate comparisons between voting patterns and weight votes accordingly. Best Lawyers uses various methodological tools to identify and correct for anomalies in both the nomination and voting process. Ultimately, of course, a lawyer’s inclusion is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow attorneys. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, the breadth of the survey, the candor of the respondents and the sophistication of the polling methodology largely correct for any biases. For all these reasons, Best Lawyers lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate and useful guide to the best lawyers in the United States available anywhere.

One case does not ... define our practice. Our approach and attitude define us. Arthur Ashe once quipped, “From what we get, we can make a living. What we give; however, makes a life.” We labor to make a world of difference for our clients. The culture of our firm revolves around ... “With God, all things are possible.” (Mark 10:27) This Bible verse is at the heart of everything we do. Our motto is ... Christianity is our profession; practicing law is our hobby. We love helping others. The world needs to see and feel that there are professionals who can make a difference – professionals who truly care about the well-being of their fellow citizens.
What our clients are saying ... means the most to us. A paycheck is nice, but the endearing words written by our clients express how much they appreciate what we have accomplished for them. “You can’t buy it, you can’t learn it, you can’t fake it,” one client wrote. “Thanks for the compassion you have shown us in our time of need. We truly know you never put yourself or the money first. We always knew it was us that you cared about most.” Another client noted, “I thank my God every time I remember you.” Still another wrote, “In your own unique way, you raise kindness to an art.” This is why we come to the office with a smile every day, knowing we are going to perform our best to do more for others than for ourselves.

I specialize in ... criminal defense and focus primarily on DUI cases, drug-related cases and traffic violations. I’m so proud of my firm because ... I have built this firm from the ground up, establishing it as one of the elite criminal defense firms in the Savannah area. Before opening my practice, I held positions on the other side of the courtroom, serving five years as an assistant district attorney for Chatham County. I believe my experience as a prosecutor allows me to better serve my clients. On a typical day, I ... can be found in various courtrooms advocating for my clients. I am most passionate about DUI cases and have extensive knowledge
of the latest DUI laws. I can also be found sitting on the bench as a judge in Bloomingdale. In 2018, I was appointed as Bloomingdale’s Judge Pro Tem. I am one of two judges currently serving as pro tem for the city and the first Indian-American judge in the city. Records suggest I’m also the first Indian-American judge in Chatham County. I decided I wanted to be a lawyer when ... I was watching “The Practice” in college. The lawyers were like superheroes fighting against injustice, and I wanted to do the same. I maintain a work/life balance by ... spending as much time as I can with my family, my wife, Darshana, and our 6-yearold daughter, Madeline.

We love practicing in Savannah because ... Savannah is home. It’s important to us that we are giving back to the community that has given us so much. We’re lucky to have employees who care for our clients like family and work diligently every day to fight for justice.
We stay involved in the community by … sponsoring and participating in community events, programs and organizations. As proud Savannahians, we see ourselves as humble servants of this beautiful region we get to call home. We are thrilled about ... our new look! We’re so excited to show off our new building and branding in 2020. We believe these changes accurately reflect our firm’s culture and will help us to better serve our clients and community.
We have a passion for … serving the underserved through social action and philanthropy.

We specialize in ... trial practice that focuses on the representation of individuals and their families injured or killed in 18-wheeler wrecks, automobile accidents and as a result of other negligence. Our most important case … is every case we take. Nothing is more important to our clients or to us than what they are going through and the circumstances that have led them to our firm. If we agree to accept a case; each receives equal attention.
Our clients are ... anyone who has been seriously injured or has had a loved one killed as a result of something someone else did or did not do. Victims of wrecks – car, motorcycle, tractor-trailer, other commercial vehicles – slip-and-fall victims, individuals whose civil rights have been violated, victims of medical negligence are all counted amongst the countless other means by which individuals are hurt and whose rights it is our privilege, and life’s work to assert, uphold and protect.
We are most proud of … our track record of success. We celebrate our 61st anniversary this year and are proud that, during this period, we have secured nearly half a billion dollars in jury verdicts and negotiated settlements for our clients — nearly $100 million of which has been in the past nine years alone. Many of our cases settle, but we distinguish ourselves from the pack by our willingness and ability to successfully try cases in front of juries and obtain great results for our clients. Being able to walk the walk instead of just talking the talk pays dividends for our clients.
Our philosophy is ... Personal. Professional. Proven. We provide our clients personal, professional attention that yields proven results. Not every law firm can honestly — and with decades of proof — make this statement. You will not find us on TV or on billboards making blanket promises about what we will do for a client we have never met. That is not our style. We are proud that our clients find us based on our reputation and not some slick advertisement. Our clients have real problems, with real-world implications which require real lawyers to help them. If we devoted our time to taping TV ads, we would not have time to serve our clients. We choose our clients.
We are pleased to announce … that Robert Lee “Cap” Russell IV has joined Jones, Osteen, Jones as a trial attorney. Cap graduated from the University of Georgia’s School of Law in May 2019, earning his Juris Doctor law degree, and was admitted to the practice of law on November 1, 2019. Having grown up in McIntosh County, Cap is excited to return to his coastal Georgia roots and to follow in the footsteps of his father, Atlantic Judicial Circuit Chief Superior Court Judge Robert “Bob” Russell. Cap’s trial practice focuses on personal injury, wrongful death, probate and criminal matters. When not advocating for his clients, Cap enjoys fishing and hunting with his lab, Goose.

I love practicing in Savannah because ... Savannah is “home. I practice criminal and family law with a goal to add value to my community. I love practicing in Savannah because being home and making a difference makes me feel like I am working and walking in my purpose. My biggest cases are ... the ones that I learned the most about myself as a lawyer. One is a civil jury trial that I won against a large, well-known civil firm where I personally learned the basis of David v. Goliath. The other case is where I felt a duty to clear the name of a local public figure after the media unfairly crucified him on a bogus charge. The jury found him not guilty.
Most people are surprised when they learn ... I have a huge sense of humor underneath all of the fighting that I do in the courtroom. I love giggling and believe that laughing is truly medicinal. I love a good joke. My family is ... my everything! I owe all that I am to God and to family. My mom, Marie Gibbons, is my hero, hands down. She mothered me in a heroic way and provided a great blueprint for strength and integrity. My three brothers, Harrison, Timothy and Torrence, are my biggest cheerleaders. My only sister, Carlotta Rice, passed away in 2013, but I take her spirit of bravery and tenacity with me in each case that I fight. My godmother, Shirley Jones, is my right hand. My dog, BJ, well, he is just spoiled rotten.

We are most proud of our abilities to educate our clients, which empowers them to manage their affairs more efficiently and effectively.
Our estate planning clients are ... business owners, professionals, multigenerational families, blended families and even those who consider their pets as family. We also represent charitable foundations and fiduciaries in the administration of estates and trusts. We stay involved in the community by … rolling up our sleeves to offer our time, talents and treasure to many community organizations through service on various boards and volunteer positions. My most challenging cases are ... those involving citizens with mental health issues. Without help, they will likely continue to commit crimes, hurting themselves and their community. Most people are surprised when they learn I ... spend time with my mother every day. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011, and I’m her primary caregiver. I feed her lunch and dinner most days and spend time with her listening to music and talking with her. She is unable to speak back, but I want her to feel loved and know that she is an important part of my life.
My charity of choice is ... Park Place Outreach, where I am the current board president. Our programs include a youth emergency shelter, a street outreach program, family preservation for teens and a transitional living program for homeless, runaway and at-risk young men ages 16 to 21. If I wasn’t a lawyer … I would be a psychologist. I was a psychology major at the University of Georgia, and becoming a psychologist was my original plan. I love people and am intrigued by human behavior. As a junior at the University of Georgia, I volunteered to read for a law student who was blind. I fell in love with the law.

Blue Light Special Are blue-light-blocking glasses a sight for sore eyes? Written by ANDREA GOTO
“DON’T SIT SO close to the TV or you’ll go blind,” warned my mother, and probably yours, too. Fortunately, the TV didn’t compromise my vision, but we had all of one screen in our house. Today, each person in the United States has an average of eight screens in the form of digital devices that connect to the internet — a number that’s expected to climb to about 13 per person by 2022, according to forecasting by tech giant Cisco. Will all these screens, with their artificial light, eventually burn through our retinas? The growing popularity of blue-light-blocking lenses is certainly fed by that fear. In 2019, the global market for this specialized eyewear was an $18 million industry, and it’s expected to increase to $27 million by 2024, no doubt

evidence to show that they are protective.” Blue light is on the higher energy spectrum of visible light. Its primary source is the sun, which is a good thing for creating natural sleep and wake rhythms, but overexposure to blue light’s short yet powerful wavelength can damage our vision. However, Pearce points out that the luminescence levels — the measure of the intensity of light — emitted from digital devices are so much lower than what’s generated by the sun, and the level of artificial blue-light exposure just isn’t enough to cause problems. Some studies in mice have indicated that blue light is harmful, but Pearce explains that these weren’t conducted using realistic scenarios. “The exposure levels to the mice were high in an unnatural manner,” says Pearce. “The reality is, there’s no way to clinically study this because we can’t control blue light exposure in a series of humans long enough to know if there’s an effect or not.” “My opinion as a retina specialist is that the blue light emitted from our phones is not causing damage to the health of our retina,” Pearce emphasizes. “But blue-light-blocking lenses aren’t going to hurt

you, either. It’s sort of like taking a multivitamin. It might help.” The real damage caused by the blue light frenzy might be that it distracts us from other issues proven to cause damage. “In my practice, cardiovascular risk factors are bigger contributors to macular degeneration,” Pearce says, “and diabetes is one of the leading causes of vision loss in the U.S.” While people who sit in front of computers all day might complain of dry eyes, blurred vision or headaches, the discomfort likely has more to do with the digital device than the light it emits. “Most eye strain associated with the use of computers, tablets and phones is actually secondary to the effort that it takes for your eyes to focus up close,” says Dr. Richard Schulze, Jr. of Schulze Eye & Surgery Center, who is “not at all convinced” that blue-light-blocking eyewear reduces eye strain. “We just aren’t meant to stare at a screen a foot or two from our eyes,” adds Pearce. He notes that some studies show how using digital devices cuts a patient’s normal blink rate in half, which can make eyes dry out quicker and feel irritated. While Dr. Edward Sammons of SouthCoast Health agrees that there isn’t enough evidence to show that blue light emitted from screens is harmful, he remains cautious. “We’ve been on digital
devices for a while, but we just don’t know the full long-term effects,” he says. “It’s certainly not going to hurt us to have bluelight-blocking lenses.” Where the doctors all agree, is that blue-light-blocking eyewear can improve sleep. “Some blue light is good because it increases our cognitive awareness and makes us wake up,” Sammons says. “The reason it can affect our sleep is that it confuses our brain into thinking that it’s daylight.” For iPhone users, Schulze recommends using a setting called “Night Shift,” which changes the color spectrum on the screen prior to bedtime to reduce blue light and promote better sleep. Or, go ahead and invest in those blue-light-blocking lenses. The unfashionable yet functional Uvex blue blockers (think bright yellow wraparound shades) run less than $30, but thankfully more stylish options are available from online shops like Pixel Eyewear if you’re willing to spend a little extra. In fact, today’s blue-light-blocking glasses can be impossible to distinguish thanks to a colorless film applied to the lens. Anecdotally, many wearers of blue blockers praise how the lenses make their peepers feel. Maybe it’s just a placebo effect, but being overprotective never really hurt anyone. It worked for Mom, anyway.

Japanese brand Matsuda is one of many indie eyewear options available at ForSight.
Eye-catching ForSight fuses health and style Written by SARA WATSON
IF EYES ARE the windows to the soul, then consider eyeglasses the custom drapery. A bevy of fascinating frames are available at ForSight, 350 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. The shop’s eyewear brands may hail from all over the world — Italy, Japan, Spain, Paris, Brooklyn — but its selection of glasses and sunglasses shares a superior attention to detail: think hand-polished frames, customizable hardware and finishes, engraved temples and a wide spectrum of bespoke frame colors. “Everything in the shop is from an independent frame company, and most of it is handmade,” says shop owner and optometrist Dr. Erika Morrow. That means she doesn’t carry anything available at retail chains, or anything owned or operated under a larger conglomerate like Luxottica, the umbrella company for brands like Ray-Ban and Oliver Peoples. Instead, ForSight’s frames offer a truly designer touch. “I want people to walk out

and say, ‘I’ve never worn a pair of glasses like this,” Morrow says. But great style doesn’t supersede good health. ForSight offers on-site exams using some pretty remarkable technology. A digital OptiKam device — it has the look of those motion-capture sensors actors sometimes wear — attaches to a pair of frames and collects custom measurements down to half a millimeter, and an Optomap machine allows Morrow to view the majority of the retina without having to dilate a patient’s eyes (translation: no blurry vision). Armed with crystal-clear vision and customized frames, patients can admire the shop’s local touches, like a preserved moss wall from The Seated Succulent and charming French doors leading to the lab, which originally came from the historic Mercer Cottage. “Stories are really important to me,” Morrow shares. “I want everything in my store to have a story that I can share.”

SALT of the CITY
Behind the Curtain Written by ALEXANDRA MARVAR
YOU MAY NOT KNOW Bobby Zarem, the Savannah-born, Ardsley Park-based, long-time New York City publicist who launched the careers of dozens of celebrities from Broadway to Hollywood throughout the second half of the 20th century. But you certainly know his work. Zarem was born here in 1936. At 38, he started his own publicity agency, shaking up the PR world with his long, personalized pitches. He represented Cher, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Diana Ross, Michael Caine, Michael Douglas, Sophia Loren — the list goes on — and photos of these icons line every surface in his living room, along with snapshots of a mustachioed Tom Hanks and a selfie with a grinning Bette Midler (taken by the Divine Miss M herself), among many others. Zarem’s publicity for films like Dances with Wolves, Scarface, Rambo and Saturday Night Fever cemented them in American cinema history. His work for his client, the City of New York, helped lead to the iconic “I Love New York” campaign. His placement of a leading New York Post item thrust John Berendt’s local

interest book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, into the national spotlight, sealing it as emblematic of — and inescapable for — Savannah. Without him, even Jimmy Carter may never have won the presidency… but that’s another story. Zarem went off to prep school just before he turned 14, then to Andover College and on to Yale, but he was never away for long, and today he lives in the very house in which he grew up. I ask him what his favorite Savannah spots were, expecting his first answer will be his beloved long-time haunt, Desposito’s — the fish shack on Isle of Armstrong that has been teetering on the brink of closure, and that we have our fingers crossed is indeed just closed for renovations. Instead, he says without even pausing to think, “the Sapphire Room.” “You mean the Sapphire Grill?” I ask, thinking of the spot that closed a few years ago on West Congress Street, an old favorite of my husband’s, who is a longtime friend of Zarem. “No! The Sapphire Room.” Before the Hilton DeSoto Hotel (now Sotherly’s The DeSoto) at Liberty and Drayton, there was an older iteration: The original DeSoto Hotel was built in 1890 on the site of the Oglethorpe Barracks, a masterpiece of esteemed Boston architect William Gibbons Preston, whose other Savannah projects include the Savannah Cotton Exchange and the old Chatham County Courthouse. The grand building was torn down in 1968 by the Hilton corporation, but before its demise, the Sapphire Room, Zarem says, was the only real night club in Savannah. It was elegant. It had an orchestra. It hosted the likes of Kathryn Hepburn, Babe Ruth and a number of American presidents. And Zarem recalls a night in 1956 when Elvis Presley was turned away at the door because he didn’t have a tie. A great publicist keeps his name and likeness out of his work, so Zarem’s decades of influence have unfolded, by nature, behind the scenes. But he was always somewhere in the background, making the scene. For a “Salt of the City” column, it doesn't get much saltier, and I’m not just talking about his occasional zingers: Zarem has added more flavor to 20th-century American pop culture than we can measure.
